the NES you think of well a lot of bad games thanks to me as the nerd but I want to take some time out and talk about some of the really good NES games and usually the first thing that comes to mind is Mario Zelda Metroid Contra Castlevania Mega Man but I want to talk about some that are very overshadowed um five that I picked out not a top five but just five that I think are really worth playing so let's start with Shadow The Ninja by natsume instantly when you see this your first thought will be that it's just a Ninja Gaiden clone but can Ryu or Rue flip up and down like this no he can't the closest Rue ever got to flipping was the Ninja Gaiden flip phone game now there's some quality gaming you also have a hook shot type of weapon as well another thing that Rue doesn't have okay it's not actually a hook shot it's called a husari gamma which is a combination of a sickle and a chain pretty badass I like weapons like this it reminds me of the disc armor from rygar yeah rygar is cool but the standout feature here is that this game has two-player simultaneous Co-op that's right you could play at the same time with a friend which in the days of NES was a big deal especially if the game was any good life force is another great one which was always a fun time back in college there's a variety of different boss fights and each one will require you to learn the pattern there's a big tank which is like something out of contra remember that one where you gotta tap your thumb so fast it feels like it's gonna fall off eventually you learn that using the bomb is the way to go here which is one of two special items you can get another boss is a man that transforms into a hawk that might be the hardest part of the game until you learn the best spots to stand during the fight there's an area near the end of the game that Scrolls upwards which gives the player a big sense of panic and anxiety which is reminiscent of areas from Ninja Gaiden Free Shadow of the Ninja is not a perfect game but one thing that bothers me is that when you get a projectile you can't switch back to your sword you have to use up all your projectiles first but aside from a few relatively small gripes you've got a pretty stellar title that not many people are talking about it also has a nice ending cut scene to look at if you beat the game imagine that a good ending instead of one that says congratulations or thank you for your coming so next up is Roller games now you look at the cover and you think this looks ridiculous I mean how could you take this seriously but it's a good game roller games was actually a television program from 89 if you never saw it the show kind of had the vibe of American Gladiators which was also made into an NES game and it had the best scream ever there's also an arcade version of roller games which was more like the TV show Konami made the right move here and instead of porting the Lesser good arcade game they went ahead and took the opportunity to actually make something people would want to play just as a side note here there was another game on the NES called rollerblade racer I'm not talking about that game that game sucks it was just a ripoff of Paperboy with Graphics that looked like they were done by a designer who had a pencil in their ass the one I'm talking about was made by Konami and it might be hard to believe today back then Konami was synonymous with quality they made some of the best on the NES library but roller games has nothing to do with the TV show really other than using some likenesses of people on the show this is a side-scrolling action platform game that's fun as hell you're not in an arena you're going through stages like a city a highway a forest and lots of indoor areas with spikes you're mostly just punching or jump kicking enemies you can also do a special attack which is a belly flop yeah nothing can stop the belly flop this isn't an easy game by any means in the area with all the spikes you have to jump on moving conveyor belts and it can really tax your timing skill there's also a section with moving rafts that's pretty hard to navigate though be warned this game isn't for the faint of heart even by the second stage it gets pretty difficult there's Hills which you'll slide down and it can be very tricky to make the jumps to the next platforms without sliding off final boss is some random guy that seems a bit out of place with the rest of the game in my opinion listen this probably isn't a 10 out of 10 game but it's still an extremely good one that most people aren't talking about if you had this in your collection you'd have fun with it but if you really want to max out the fun potential play Roller games with the rolling rocker now you're a badass next up is vice project Doom now the NES seal of quality this is a game that certainly deserves it because this is about as quality as you can get on the NES the game begins with a top-down driving stage that's essentially a vertical shooter it doesn't go on too long just get to the end destroy a boss car and move on there's other great games like Adventures of Batman and Robin on Genesis that are mostly side scrollers and toss in one shmup level that goes on way too long but this game has the right balance soon after you get in on the real meat of the game besides scrolling action you get three weapons to choose from a sword a gun or grenade and each of them come in handy in different situations so they're all weapons that you're going to want to use depending on the different circumstances there's even first person Viewpoint levels it happens every so often and that's pretty rare on the NES sure there's The Untouchables and The Punisher but both of those are more like over-the-shoulder viewpoints here it's only the gun on the screen I can't think of many that do that that aren't zapper games and can you believe they did this in The Untouchables NES game wow the backgrounds and visuals in Vice project Doom are exceptionally well done they're right up there with games like Batman and shatter hand the designers truly understood level design and appealing color schemes even down to something like a simple rat it isn't just a furry brown rat it's bathed in colors of purple and blue that make it seem like it's being lit by the surrounding environment many of the boss fights require a bit of trial and error to figure out the best pattern with this blue ice creature it was best to stay below him when he's in the middle to avoid his shots then when he jumps to the side platforms you sneak in a few hits not too many as you'll also need to deal with those little creatures he sends out when you first come to these fights you won't immediately know how to handle them but as you learn the patterns it makes you want to play through the game a second time so that you can get a cleaner run that's the mark of a good game when you're not even finished with it and you know you'll want to play it again the final stage is rough the enemies come at you and swarm so it's easy to get overwhelmed but with enough practice and perseverance you can learn how to handle each foe for example there's these red guys that jump out from the bottom of the screen there seems to be no defense but eventually you learn to quickly back off to dodge their projectiles and then you move in to either attack or pass them the final boss has two forms the first is a man you need to figure out some small tricks to get by in like waiting until he fires while standing and then you quickly drop to your knees and get in some shots see this is how you drop to your knees in an NES game but then there's also when you drop to your knees and ring King now that's something next on form two the boss turns into a gigantic skeleton creature you can either get under his legs and attack or you can lob the grenades at him when he lands from a big jump I find this the easier of the two methods I think the reason this game may be overlooked is because of the first stage it just seems like a spy hunter wannabe or something like that and I can see people turning it off without even completing the first stage but let me tell you stick in there this is one of the best games on the system so next up is rocking cats this was made by Atlas who was the same company who made fry the 13th which was of course one of the LJ unpublished games and wow you would think that there's no way this could be good but it actually is the closest thing I guess I can compare rocking cats to is Bionic Commando because of the arm that shoots out and grabs onto things but Bionic Commando has more of a serious tone to it but this game is more cartooning and just kind of like goofball fun look at these pandas spinning on plates while standing on beach balls or this boss fight with a pound puppy in a clown suit what were they smoking he progressed through stages and your main method of attack and movement is your cartoony spring fist you can use it to attack enemies but more importantly you can grab onto objects to swing around and fly off admittedly it takes a little time to get used to but once you do you have a game where you can move around a level like no other on the NES that makes it very unique that's not the only thing you get either you can buy stuff and get rocket shoes these are pretty great because they let you float over stuff like Princess Peach in Mario 2. but were they still calling our Princess Toadstool back then I don't know it was always weird kind of like princess frog the last boss of the game is pretty hilarious it's basically King Kong in a 1940s gangster costume wanna know the secret to winning here punch him in the nuts yeah just riding the nuts look at him cry no bananas for you this game is somewhat rare these days you'd think they would have dropped this game on Nintendo switch online by now but hey that's okay it has Eliminator boat duel and the immortal so that's cool oh I wanted to mention this box art too the cat is holding a handgun but your weapon in the game is the fist so was this going to be a different type of game originally or do you think the Box artists just never played the game before next up is DuckTales too now everybody remembers the first DuckTales game especially when the remastered version came out but what about the sequel well not as many people talk about this one because it's on the more rare and expensive side that's why a lot of people didn't get the opportunity to play it but I have to say it's every bit as good if not better than the first outside of music because you can't forget that Moon music this time instead of only a pogo jump Scrooge gets some new abilities you can now pull objects with the cane and if you get the gyro gear loose upgrades Scrooge's attacks can become more powerful so that he can go different routes this game has more depth to it because it's more expansive you're trying to find six pieces of a map you can beat the game quickly or you can try and be a completionist and get the full map and the longer game is welcome because the original game felt a little short to me there's also some more involved puzzles to figure out this time like memorizing the Suns on the ground which gives you the order of where to drop the barrels in the water later on the game keeps true to what DuckTales is all about Scrooge going on adventures to far off lands collecting money to increase his fortune it's just that this time the game is longer a bit more difficult and is overall just a grander adventure than the first there's new boss fights and all the levels are well designed and fun to play through and of course you see classic DuckTales characters like Flint heart glomgold and everything you'd expect but at the very end of the game is a pretty nice and funny surprise Scrooge McDuck fights a liquid T-1000 obviously Terminator 2 was popular at the time but I just like the idea of Uncle Scrooge making a t-1000s ass go eat your heart out Arnold so anyway there's lots of really good NES games that you might not have heard of so if you can think of any NES games that you think are overshadowed or underrated well let me know in the comments and thanks for watching
