look you need to be seeking shelter like right now warden Williamstown you do have a little bit of time to kind of gather some things up maybe make the last-minute phone calls before you get your family into a safe location but this storm does look like it is going to be moving into western portions of Douglas County we do have pictures right now I'm gonna step out of the way Brett Anthony is in the storm track five mobile Weather Center and he is back on actual pavement right now and he's riding within the rain he's inside of that thunderstorm actually that's producing the tornado and as we were saying before that the most dangerous thing about this particular cell is that it appears as though that tornado is one that's called rain-wrapped meaning that it's not sitting in a rain free area like many tornadoes typically do but it's actually within sight within that rain and precipitation area which makes them very difficult obviously to see so we'll continue to watch his video from time to time Aaron what is the latest that you hear from NWS Chad I know that you were saying earlier that Andy Bailey from the Pleasant Hill office said that this actually is confirmed now that there was a tornado and possibly still is in that Osage County a storm and the hard part is I think that the moment you get a visual or you can see that tornado on the ground then your urgency raises higher but we can't see anything this is what we call a rain wrapped potential tornado that's on the ground over areas again near Osage City as this storm is lifting north in the east the reason that we are keeping a close eye on this storm it will be moving its way potentially in the areas of Douglas County so heads up anywhere near the Lawrence area especially for those campgrounds that we have over areas near the kayuu campus as well we are closely monitoring this storm now we knew that this would be an afternoon and an evening where we had a very favorable environment for not only seeing explosive thunderstorms like you can see behind me here but the potential that any storms that we did see develop that characteristic of winds turning in the atmosphere that we could have the potential that these tornadoes may be more violent and longer lasting than we've seen so far this season here in the immediate metropolitan area and we certainly had those sirens going off here in Kansas City on Friday evening so I think everybody is on high alert and something else to note we've had so many days after days after days where we've had the threat for severe weather and it all kind of blurs and becomes one picture but again we are continuing to monitor this we want you to stay on high alert and if you begin to hear the sirens worth noting go to our Facebook page as you're taking shelter potentially this evening we'll be live-streaming our coverage to help get that important information to you now Brett Anthony he's in the thick of this thunderstorm complex that is tornado warned right now over areas in your Osage City I can see bread all of those cars just stopped on the interstate it tells exactly where you're at what highway or interstate do you on right now Brent we just left linden Kansas so this is highway 75 headed back to the north toward Scranton in Carbondale and yes several cars pulled over you can also see cars coming from this the circulation has just passed over 75 and is just on the east side of highway 75 right now but folks down here on this side are making the wise decision to stop and let this pass I've seen a few emergency vehicles there's a county sheriff's office pulled over to the side of the road we've seen some emergency vehicles racing in a certain direction I'm not sure if they're going to to block traffic stop traffic check out something but it looks like this is starting to tighten up again now that it's got to the east side of highway 75 so let me can't pan the camera over and you can see Aaron as you pointed out I mean this thing was we if there was a circulation and we were in it if there was a tornado we couldn't tell it didn't seem like it I was only seeing wind's coming from one direction within that circulation so I think we were just taking the brunt of some heavy downdraft winds out of the thunderstorm that were I'm gonna estimate 16 65 miles an hour maybe no damage that I've seen so far in parts of those two H County as we've been driving on this roadway but we are going to i'ma pan you back hipper to the north again that circulation is gonna be right here very close to highway 75 and as you guys have pointed out likely very tough to see because of the rain but there are lots of spotters out here looking and trying to get some eyes on this because you know you can have radar but visual confirmation is what really really locks things down for us and you know for sure what's happening so this is a certainly a tough storm to follow like we are just because of the intensity of the rain so maybe we okay we're gonna go north just a little bit farther I'm thinking of we're gonna look for a road trying to move back to the east just a little bit to get in behind this again we don't want to go back into the circulation as it looks fairly strong at this time but we are trying to get as close as possible and yet stay as safe as possible just to give you an idea of what's happening in this storm but a lot of hard winds lots of strong wind gusts but we have not seen any damage or any type of them I have not seen a tornado that we saw those very thick low clouds as you guys saw on the on the camera as we drove up to that storm before the rain just hit us so there's likely a pretty good shelf cloud on the leading edge of this that announces its arrival and you'll likely see that moving in we're alive in the mobile weather center of KCTV 5 meteorologist Fred Anthony all right Brett thank you very much okay so you were looking right now live at chopper five and they have the chopper pilot has an excellent vantage point of what is happening right now as the storms are closing in on the Kansas City area Gary what are you seeing as far as cloud development goes here I mean from my perspective it just looks ominous it looks awful you can see that rains coming down but from your perspective what are you seeing here the structure is not exactly well-defined looks like there may be kind of a weak little shelf cloud on the leading edge of this looking back you can see that there is some heavy precipitation within this as well now choppers pulling out a little bit giving us a much better look perhaps at some of the structure of the storm right now it looks like chopper 5 is in pretty good location to see what could potentially be a tornado within this storm but again having to work more towards the southeast corner of that cell which would give us much better vantage point of that again Andy Bailey at the National Weather Service office in Pleasant Hill has put out a statement confirming that there was a tornado that was inside of this but again if it's rain wrapped it's really difficult to see number one your television set at home and our monitors here in the studio need to be very very well they need to be of high quality so you can see any type of a little Vorta see within that rick shielded area it's better to actually see on the radar let's go ahead and take this well actually I'll go ahead and stay within this little box area here this is even better so you can see for yourself if perhaps out in that video screen you could maybe see that tornado but right now Osage City is here Linden is right about here so just north of Linden which is just about where Brett Anthony is right now that's where the tightest rotation is right there where the colors come together well to the northeast now of Osage cities so Osage City here pretty much in the clear if you live within town there but the northeast portion now of Osage County right in there that's where the tightest rotation is it's kind of come back together again to become very tight so at least for brief periods of time would surprise me at all if there actually is tornadic activity within that precipitation area it's also in the middle of where some of the heavier rains are falling it's really kind of unusual many times what you'll see is the tornadoes right on the outer edge of those little rain shaft areas but this one is almost where that heavy rain is beginning to fall there's a little couplet area here see the shape how it bends in this allows for air to flow in and sometimes that will get some rotation going so these are great areas to kind of view to see but it looks like the the the strongest gate the gate shear which means you have strong winds going this way strong winds come in the other way and that's what you're seeing and if you see winds going in opposite directions you know that it's actually circulating winds within thunderstorms which is basically how Doppler radar works but again all of this this is a little bit southwest of Elk Kansas if you can hear my voice in Elk that's where it is and it's moving directly to your town and I'm sure that the tornado sirens are going off and if you live in the town of Elk you want to make sure that you're below ground and in your safety shelter right now in fact the winds are beginning to pick up according to this the winds the surface winds should be picking up at this hour and but the actual rotation is still just a little bit to the southwest of Elk and you can see two polygons here that's tornado warning number one they actually tighten this up now this is how advanced technology has evolved this much tighter tornado warning covers only the extreme northeast corner now of Osage County so between Fairfax and Elk to very small little towns but you know where these two towns are if you live in Northeast Osage County right there is what we're looking at right in there just northeast of Fairfax southwest of Elk & elk you are directly in line for what is a very very dangerous cell now this may not be tornado in constantly I think that at least from what I've judged from looking at storm relative velocities here I believe that the rotation broadens out typically that means that these things can dissipate when it tightens back up again that's typically when you see those vortices and those potential tornados begin to reform again so Aaron's got a perfect track on this showing you some of the arrival times they're at the Santa Fe Trail Schools and also the twin mound school as well so a lot of schools in this location looks like the Clinton Lake Marina is going to be impacted a little bit farther down the line and now it looks like the tornado warning does include Douglas County so Douglas County now is under a tornado warning right now it is not going to be impacting the city of Lawrence but if you live in the West especially the west central or southwest portion of Douglas County you are right in the line of fire of this so let's go ahead and lose this box material here Aaron and let's put a brand new scope on this and see if we can find that tight rotation again this is Douglas County here Baldwin City is is technically within this tornado warned area so right and all that is really looking like some pretty pretty positive rotation there on storm relative velocity so Aaron's got a great scope on that right in here and that track is going to take it right into the southwest portion of Douglas County and West Central Douglas County and now it appears as though that tight rotation has shifted into that little couplet area of the storm this little bounded week echo region right in there and that's again of prime concern so it's in Globe at about 559 it'll be in Vinland Valley at about 626 again these are small little towns that are either in Osage County or the western portions of Douglas but nonetheless it should stay just to the north of central as' and tropi lists your tornado warnings are prior your tornado sirens are probably going off right now you're literally within just a few miles of the actual tornado and even though I believe it'll likely track to the north of centralist you do need to be in your shelter in the same centralized area to be on the safe side same for Baldwin City now I don't want to give you given all clear to Baldwin City because you're definitely close enough you're only within about Oh 12 to 15 miles away from where that tornado would be it does appear as though it is going to be tracking to the north of Baldwin City in fact it's more on a track to reach areas around Lawrence than it will be baldwin city but at the same time if you hear the sirens going off and you live in baldwin city you should be seeking shelter there as well but the farther north you live out of baldwin city and on the south side of lawrence looks like we can start to narrow this path down a little bit where this up tornado would be going obviously clinton lake is going to be impacted by this as well if you do know somebody who may be out on the lake right now i'm sure they're getting off after hearing the thunder and lightning but if you know anybody who's out with any sort of recreational activities in that vicinity and aaron if we could back this view back up again this is the couplet area but i wanted to catch this moore's a little bit more square in the screen so we can see it and perfect again this is this indented area here appears to be where the inflow of the wind is coming in so right in here just to the east of Elk southeast of Elk that's where I would anticipate that perhaps tornado to be so let's put a scope right over northeast right basically where my finger is going and we'll check out the rotation and this yeah there it is pretty easy to see so lqr completely under the gun right now some very very strong winds right now and also the potential for tornadic activity so this entire area just near Elk and just to the south is exactly where this tornado is located right now we'll be crossing over the county line likely within about the next eight minutes and then it will be all a Douglas County storm and the way this is tracking it would basically split the difference between Baldwin City and Lawrence Kansas of course there's some a lot of people that are live in that area a lot of folks that lit at work in Lawrence but live to the South Moore out in the countryside and a lot of people are now going to be impacted by this so if you could let's go ahead and put box up on this one to see how many people in in Douglas County will be impacted by this tornado warning and then you can kind of take it from there Aaron latest information coming in here as we are continuing to monitor this potential tornado on the ground now the HAR problem is we don't have a visual of this storm because it is rain wrap so although we may very well have a tornado on the ground and we've certainly seen signatures of that on the radar and we've also had over the last half hour the National Weather Service confirming that at times this tornado has been on the ground as well but we've got rain wrapping this storm system so we don't have any visibility of that potential tornado on the ground but I know if you live over areas of Douglas County right now you are hearing those sirens going off and we want you to seek shelter now areas directly in the path pomona Lake as this storm is moving northeast at 35 miles an hour all of the ingredients that we have in our atmosphere right now across our area give us the potential of seeing long-lasting potentially violent tornadoes moving across our area right now the sirens are going off and errands right now the sirens are going off for areas of Lawrence's we're continuing to monitor this and Gary the hard part is we've had so many days now back to back a severe weather and I think folks may just kind of be a little bit more lacks like we've had so many days and it hasn't directly impacted me but these storms are moving over now highly populated areas and the National Weather Service even mentioning we're gonna watch this storm because if it holds together it could clip the northwest side of the 435 loop in Kansas City as we're moving through the next hour right well this this storm really has held together nicely I mean many times they'll fall apart after about 20-30 minutes but this one has held together and again the atmosphere is set up door we can have long tracked tornadoes that which means they could be on the ground for long periods of time that typically means that they're going to be bigger tornadoes as well this one is impacting right now areas that are getting very close to the western edges of Douglas County if it does continue on its direct line path keep in mind they can veer off the path a little bit on a way but it appears as though it's going to be working its way to the south side of Lawrence or just to the north of Baldwin City tornado sirens going off in both of those towns right now and if you live in either of those towns and you hear the sirens obviously you need to be hitting your shelter and we are watching the latest updates here in the weather center with the radar but what you can see on the right-hand side of your screen I know there's that warning box that goes atop the Trotta the top right hand side of your screen we are watching this storm from the air in News chopper 5 and we are also watching this storm on the ground from our mobile weather center Brett Anthony he has been on this storm for the last hour as we're continuing to monitor those latest updates as this storm is moving its way off to the north and the east at about 35 miles an hour again tornado warning in effect for areas of Douglas and Franklin County the reason that we're on the air right now we have over 5,000 folks within our viewing area that are hearing the sirens going off and need to seek shelter right now now Brett Anthony you've been on this storm for the last hour tell us what's your location now what have you seen for the last 10 minutes since we have been updating folks on the radar all right so we are eastbound on highway 56 toward Overbrook and that circulation the last day saw was just a couple miles south of Overbrook it looks like it's closing in on Overbrook as we now again are in some intense rain and wind visibility is next to nothing here in this heavy rain so we're trying to get the southeast side of this storm to get a better look on it if it passes east of Overbrook we ought to be able to slide in behind it but we'll still likely have to drive through some heavy rainfall to do that we haven't been able to see I haven't seen any damage so if it's been on the ground we haven't been in over a spot where the circulation has been as you saw earlier we were right in say the lower clouds that went by just to our just to our east from where we were in Linden and now that has moved up to here toward over Brooke moving into Douglas County as you guys been talking about so again we're approaching the town of Overbrook highway 56 you could just see the visibility here and one of the problems with this storm if it is indeed rain-wrapped there's just no way to really be able to see unless you're bit in the circulation itself it is just that type of heavy rainfall a suit and a rain wrapped a tornado if it's on the ground I can't confirm that because again we can't see it just south just south of the highway even from here on 56 highway so again our goal is to get here to Overbrook and try to slip in behind it get a better view from them from the south where that circulation seems to be to be strongest right now so I'll send it back to you guys in a studio a lot of cars coming and going in this storm again not a wise thing the tornado watch has ever issued best Playa thing to do is to just cancel the plans to stay home you do not want to be out driving I get caught in something like this we're just getting it over Brooke right now on KCTV 5 meteorologist Brett Anthony all right well Brett Anthony is positioning himself into a perfect location to follow and to track this storm through the area again Brett is near Overbrook Kansas right now but working his way to areas in between Lawrence and Baldwin City it appears as though that's where this storm is going to be tracking I think it's going to favour areas south and just southeast of Lawrence if it continues in that direction we'll be coming very close to the southern portion of Clinton Lake - as it passes by and starts to hit areas around Lawrence that's where the tightest circulation is again keep in mind that you're not gonna likely you look out your window and see a beautiful shaped tornado heading your way this is likely going to be obscured by rain so it's one of those things where the rain comes you can't see much outside then all of a sudden Wham that tornado may be embedded within that's what makes this storm so incredibly dangerous right now is that you just can't see it it's completely camouflaged as it's moving into areas and that has been the history of this so far so not what you'd call an a typical tornado by any means but erin has okay the Lauren citycam now is porn it pointed towards the storm you want to take that full there it is this is a look from the Oread hotel now we're looking off to the southwest so you're seeing the approaching storm here from the city cam again we'll have this fired up in this direction and that is absolutely a perfect angle to be looking out as this storm passes through because it likely will be just to the south of campus I believe unless this storm changes course it will be to the south of campus as that tornado works its way through that doesn't mean that I'm telling any summer students to go run around campus and that and have fun when the sirens are going off obviously you need to be seeking shelter and by the way if you are seeking shelter grab your phone and take it with you and follow us on Facebook we will be streaming live all of this live coverage all the way through the evening hours so you can watch us on the fly and in your shelter on your phone as you do that Erin let's go ahead and lose all of the box and end this track and then we'll take the scope again and put a brand new scope on that particular storm as it works its way through again near Elk Kansas at this hour there it is I mean this is absolutely beautiful tight rotation let's zoom in on this area too I really want to get a tight track on this and then once it works into Douglas County that's going to get down into our street level mapping and once it gets closer to Lawrence and to Baldwin City we'll take you down and start naming streets where this is going to be impacting areas but this is it you can see that the inbound and the outbound air colliding right here just east of Elk Kansas so it appears as though that heaviest rotation now has already passed over the city of Elk wait till the sirens go off but I believe in Elk you're in pretty good shape at this hour that will soon then be moving into areas of western portions of Douglas County right now it's right here let's go ahead and broaden this picture back out again now that I know exactly where this is located and here's also what's been going on with this it hasn't just been one area of rotation basically it fires up it dissipates then there may be a new area that a new updraft takes over but again you can see the vast difference in color here one going towards the radar the other one away from it and that means that there's very tight circulation right in between so it's right here so let's put a track right here and then send that off to the Northeast oh look at the gate to gate shear here this just to give folks some right you can show them and basically what these numbers mean is that the wind is going at 33 meters per second so it's going at a little at about 35 yards every second so that's a fast fast moving wind and that's what the gate to gate shear is meaning that the shear wind speed is separated by that much and that is a lot let's go ahead and take a little track and put it right about there good storm now is east of Ridgeway east of Fairfax and it's Northwest and things right now so the best news that I have is that there are no small towns at least immediately in line with this ehind it that is going to be realized to the Northeast we'll see what kind of towns are in line to be impacted by this storm as it works through mostly schools if we can let's go ahead and take this full so I can read the times on this because it's going to be absolutely critical that we get the times and we get the bright people into shelter if you live near Willow Springs school right you've got about nine minutes before this arrives globe at 607 Sibley ville at 6:35 again some areas may have a little bit more Lee time would be in Eudora at 649 and Eudora high school at about 649 as well so Eudora is east of Lawrence meaning that it's going to reach the southern portions of Lawrence much much sooner than that you've only got about 20 minutes on the south side of Lawrence and if you live just to the south of Clinton Lake you don't have much time at all to be seeking your shelters so if you hear the sirens going off outside obviously hit your shelters looks like we have an update here let's go ahead and lose all of this box material and the track and we'll find out exactly on the ground where this tornado is located again this is the hole notched area here that is where most of that rotation is located that is moving to the east northeast now Aaron has just zoomed into this very very tightly now we'll put a scope on this and find out where that gate to gate shear is which has been east of elk and it still is but now it is firmly into Douglas County so the southwest portion of Douglas County is where this potential tornado is right in this area here so centralist this storm is passing by about four and a half to five miles northwest of centralist as it continues to vector off more towards the east northeast Baldwin City now if you come out of Baldwin City and you take out off out of the hills and start to wind down into more of those valley areas between Baldwin City and Lawrence that's a directly in line to where this track of storms is going Erin what do you have over there well we're continuing to keep a close eye again on this tornado warned storm the new information so as a 556 just now they've extended this for Douglas and Franklin County until 6:30 now this evening as we're continuing to monitor the very latest with this thunderstorm complex that is potentially producing a tornado now we do not want you out of your safe shelters but if you are hearing those sirens right now the one way that you can stay connected with us we know you may be moving away from your TV to your basement the lowest level of your home as those sirens are going off for areas of Douglas in Franklin County are we are live streaming our coverage on Facebook so I know you're probably going to take your phone with you and you go to those safe shelters and remember us at KCTV five on facebook as we will continue to live stream or coverage and again we want you to be in those safe shelters but if you do have any pictures storm damage anything and that you are seeing visually we would love to hear those reports from you again first and foremost we want you to be safe but as the storm passes as you are out of that area of the significant risk send us those videos and send us a direct message either to myself Erin at KCTV 5 on my Facebook page our main page at KCTV five and again I know this may be very scary for folks especially for areas of Douglas and Franklin County because we don't have any visuals we have plenty of crews all surrounding this storm on the ground we can see the potential of those winds turning and different directions and the atmosphere on live power doppler but we don't have any visuals of this tornado because it's potentially rained wrap so all around this thunderstorm complex where we have the potential of a tornado we have rained surrounding it so it just gives us more concern that without those visuals we really have to kind of wait until some of this rain wrap begins to clear or until we begin to get some of those damage reports once the storm moves through areas within our viewing area again tornado warning in effect for areas of Douglas and Franklin County the strongest rotation this is coming in from the National Weather Service and that's why I'm kind of peering down here because I can see minute by minute this new information coming in and they are saying the strongest rotation three miles to the northwest of globe and continuing to the areas of Lone Star's so if you live over areas of lone Starr and globe you should be in your safe shelter right now you should be in the lowest level of your home as these sirens are going off and we're continuing to monitor the latest with this storm now bright Anthony has been tracking this cell specifically for over an hour and earlier this evening Brett you had such significant winds and obviously you're still in the rain wrap part of the storm as well what is your location and what are your latest updates when mobile Weather Center all right so we are headed eastbound still and we have moved into Douglas County we should be on the eastern side of this circulation but again very difficult to tell we've haven't had a tremendous amount of wind as we've moved east of into the circulation at least on the northeast side of this circulation I'm looking for some winds picking up a little bit here it's been the rain and it's been a tremendous amount of rain I want to show you something earlier we were east of Linton or Linden and the winds picked up a frequently and remember we were stationary or almost stationary and watch this wind gust that was measured here on the mobile weather center I'm not sure 109 miles an hour it might if it was we were in probably a small tornado and just didn't realize it but it was the winds right now are coming out of the West they're only at 30 miles an hour but earlier that's the wind that we clocked a wind gust that we clocked on the mobile weather Center all right so we're coming to the eastern part of this circulation so what I want to try to do now is turn this around we're gonna try to go south we've got to get into the south side of the storm but this has been a challenging storm to chase because of the lack of visibility and because of its movement because of some of the roads that we have to navigate to try to get to a good position on this but I can tell you right now the heavy rain in that circulation continues if there's a tornado on the ground it'll be rain rap tears a junction we're gonna turn and go south and now we're gonna be able to get some eyeballs looking back to the Northeast on this so that'll be real good for us here in just a little bit so we can tell you and give you a better indication of what's what's heading up toward the Lawrence area at this time all right so I'm gonna send it back into the studio I'm live at the Mobile's Weather Center I'm KCTV 5 meteorologist Brad Anthony back to Ellen in the studio Allen all right Brett thank you you just mentioned the Lawrence area and Lawrence police have just tweeted out that the sirens have continued to go off here in the area in fact they put up a video here showing the sirens or you could hear the sirens going off and showing what was going on in Lawrence if you guys can take me full I'll be able to show you some better pictures that we've been able to see on social media as well some great videos also coming in here so this is near Dodge City and we were looking here certainly is rain-wrapped the video that you can see here of this storm of this potential tornado hitting down near Dodge City then we also have one other video here from Paradise Kansas just north of Hays also showing some right some movement there some clouds coming down a tornado hitting in a very rural area these pictures are just incredible we want to go back now to the other place that I was telling you about just near larae Kansas so this video this this photo right here can kind of show you what's going from the skies so as we are getting these photos in just incredible images incredible video and we want to remind you to be very safe if you do step outside priority is your safety number one and Gary you're gonna pick up some of our coverage now all right well let's talk about Douglas County because right here is where that tornado is located again it's in a very sparsely are fairly sparsely populated area at the moment but that is moving to the northeast and it's going to be hitting in areas just in between Baldwin City and Lawrence this is worgen Kansas as you heard before this is all just to the northwest of warden that's where the tightest circulation is located right here very easily to determine where this tornado is located right in there exactly at this point so that is just northwest of globe globe you're within about a mile to a mile and a half of where this tornado is located and that is moving off to the northeast now so that will be moving into area is very very close to the Lawrence vicinity as well so again what we can expect out of this is heavy rain to be falling very tight rotation within that thunderstorm cell itself but it appears as though some of that strongest rotation will be in areas that are easily within some of the heavier falling rain so let's go ahead and lose that storm relative velocity scope Aaron and then broaden this picture back out again to show you the tornado warning in its entirety the polygon itself you can see what the National Weather Service does here as well as a brand new polygon is being drawn here to kind of tighten this up so Franklin County no longer within the threat area of this particular storm and cell however portions of Douglas County now our brand new polygon as I was saying before staying just to the north of Baldwin City but on the north end of this polygon that's actually been extended and it appears as though all of the west portion of Lawrence so we have from Lone Star all the way up towards oh the western areas of Lawrence Albemarle Country Club would be involved on this as well chopper 5 is near Eudora right now then heading off to see this storm basically to intercept this storm this is chopper five showing you this broad area of rain this is the Eudora vicinity but the storms are closing in on Eudora as well you saw the track and if it does hold together and I don't see any reason why at least the rotating part of this storm wouldn't hold together long enough to reach Eudora you will be involved in this as well tornado sirens not going off here you still have some time but if I were you living in Eudora I would make your your calls right now to make sure that your family members are all together so you can hit the safe place once this storm and cell gets a little bit closer to that also in this bottom box that you're looking at right down here that's storm track five mobile weather centers so we're gonna give you continued live pictures there this is chopper five to give you live pictures they're basically near Eudora or right in this vicinity here that's where chopper five is located there's the notch of the storm right in this vicinity where my hand is going and then the most dangerous portion of that storm is right there just where the rain really begins to kick in so to help you right where that storm is the National Weather Service saying the same thing that we're seeing on the radar very tight rotation Lonestar areas over Lone Star Kansas that strong rotation now two miles south-southwest of your cities so you should be in your safe shelter right now the circulation is rain-wrapped very difficult to see but again Lone Star Kansas it's hard because these are more rural cities right now there is a lake though down at Lone Star and it's it's a heavily visited Lake especially people in Lawrence kind of want to get away don't want to go to Clinton Lake we'll head down to Lone Star Lake for maybe a little more peace and quiet but it's anything but peace and quiet as Erin was just telling you so Lone Star Area as you just heard in a direct path of this if anybody is familiar with the Lawrence area at Lone Star's to the south of Lawrence but it does appear as though Lawrence is going to be in line at least areas south of Lawrence to pick up a substantial wind out of this very very easy to see this is really starting to tighten up now so again between Baldwin City and Lawrence in the southwest portion of Douglas County is where this tornado is located right now I'm gonna step out of the picture can we take Brett's full Bret's got a really interesting picture here that I want to see Brett are you on the are you on the line can you hear me be I hear ya I really I really do like your picture where are you located right now and tell me what you're seeing from your vantage point inside the windshield okay so we are we're right on the the right out the eastern edge of that whole circulation and I turned south or Gregg turned south because we were trying to get back to the southeast of what what we thought was our circulation right now in fact here's our exact location we're at Woodson Road and Delaware Road in Douglas County so they'll be west of Baldwin City and if I pan this back around here we were trying to come back and we thought we were gonna get back into the lower ring back here but I that camera turn to the other direction and I think it might be back in that back to the northeast of us right now so my radar data might be a little bit old just based on some of the cells signals so we're gonna turn around and we need to go back the other way Greg and try to get back on that other part of that cell that looked a lot more ominous than what we're seeing out here so again we are southwest of all yeah well here's southwest of Baldwin City right here so essentially this is where the mobile Weather Center is that's where the tornado is so again Bret and I'm not sure if you can hear me but if you go almost due north but don't go very far maybe two or three miles then position yourself right there as this storm flies by you should be able to get a visual on that vortex and again we're going to be showing you continuous and then once we have a picture of that tornado we're going to just go live with that Bret Anthony is all over that storm right now chopper five do we have a location on the chopper at this hour I had him tracked on my phone but I don't have my phone with me he's a little bit southeast of Lawrence so right here okay so chopper if you could relay this message to our pilot Greg he'll need to go south before he starts curving back to the west of course Greg is an experienced chopper pilot will naturally be doing that anyway but again he is really close to the notch in area here of this storm but he does need to follow the outside edge of this not getting too close because he isn't a chopper and any outflow winds can buffing around that chopper pretty well but again an experienced pilot would know that let's go ahead and lose the track on this Aaron will get another fix of this we should be getting it into an area where we can just about get down to street level here and start mapping some of those streets we do have Baldwin city mapped out and also parts of Lawrence too so we can take your right down to those levels and we'll start to tell you some of the cross streets that will be impacted by this you can see right in here that some of the towns in the path here gonna be Broken Arrow Broken Arrow Park is that Park that's all the way south towards about 32nd Street just south of Lawrence storm relative velocity I'll expand that out a little bit more that's right there's where that is right here so that is going to track just to the south of Broken Arrow Park that'll be Sibley village right in here that's just a tiny little dot on the map but Sibley Ville Vinland if these familiar to you whether they're subdivisions or just a small little town or maybe an unincorporated oh look at that emergency managers now confirming reporting that there is a tornado on the ground over Lone Star Lake so that is right where you see your finger right now again emergency managers over areas of lone Starr lake now saying that there is a tornado on the ground they can see visuals of it as this will be moving its way into areas if you're at Broken Arrow Park Sibley Ville extending through areas past that through Eudora now tornado warnings in effect for your area as well and I'm continuing to monitor minute by minute we're getting more and more updates as this a new tornado warning has now just been issued so let me click on this one just to get the very latest that's coming in here I'm tornado warning continuing for areas of Douglas County they've extended it Gary now until 7:00 p.m. and it's right where you can see that tight circulation so again you can see the flashing here actually this is the other radar that you can see behind me but yes extending for the entire portion of Douglas County now all the way to the county line between Douglas and Johnson County Kansas we have now confirmed from emergency managers that there is a tornado on the ground just south of Lone Star Lake as we're continuing to monitor this I'm gonna get a new sweep and we're gonna use the scope which helps us to look inside the thunderstorm to see where we have the strongest potential rotation I'm gonna zoom that in here for you Gary and toss it back over to you okay that's great Erin thank you so much for doing that again we had that beautiful tight rotation you can see the polygons changing shape this is the tornado right there that is it again just on the south edge of Lone Star Lake and Lone Star's they was right directly in the path as we've been telling you all along so again that is the most dangerous part of that storm it's also going to be passing by maybe about two miles south of Broken Arrow Park it's been a long standing a look at the gate to gate shear here and debris now being reported on the east side of Lone Star Gary so yeah not only tornado on the ground but now seeing reports of debris which means this tornado is destructive as it's on the ground over areas of Douglas County Kansas well obviously go to be ripping up trees and anything else that may be in its way but the gate to gate shear now is up to 55 meters per second that is more than half a football field in one second if you could imagine that kind of wind speed and that's what's going on within that tight circulation they're getting a beautiful shot of that from the radar screen let's go ahead and lose this box right here so we can put a track on this storm as it moves through the Lawrence vicinity getting close to the south end of Lawrence super-tight rotation is just absolutely incredible here so again this one is very very easy to track Aaron is right on the button here as this storm is moving basically off to the east northeast and you have a what about a 32 mile an hour or 33 mile an hour track on that I think that's about the right speed actually if it holds together along it long enough it would be in Lenexa at a little bit after about seven o'clock so now we're starting to talk about some of the metro towns but Sibley Ville it's pretty much on your doorstep right now it only has to cover about three or four more miles before it's in Sibley Ville but you are directly directly in the path of this right now as it moves out of the Lone Star area and into Sibley ville you don't have much time there so hit the shelter right away Eudora at about 6:30 for but before it gets to the 634 we've got about ten minutes and it's on the south side of Lawrence just south of Broken Arrow Park is where it looks like it's going to go let's check the city cam this is from Lawrence so you're looking at that storm from the Oread hotel looking back to the south you can see the heavy rain shaft that's there as well obviously you're not likely going to be seeing the actual tornado itself the tornado itself can you put me in front of this picture is that a possibility I'm not sure if it is but but if you could I could show you where this tornado is going to be from this vantage point it's basically just going to be to the west of Frazier hall Frazier Hall is the one with the two iconic flag poles that sit atop the building but again you were looking from the vantage point from Lawrence almost south-southwesterly into this area here but you have to look through a lot of rain before he find it but let's zoom down a little bit closer to this see if we can find a couple of landmarks here and we'll basically walk you out of the way you can see Eudora's right up the line here Sibley ville you're right in line and areas about four to five miles south of Lawrence again it there's a lot of population here just south of Lawrence as we start to get up towards Broken Arrow Park just to the south this is probably no more than a mile south of Broken Arrow Park passing over areas just to the west of that and to the north you find that strip of Iowa Street that is is starting to become very well built up as this storm continues to move to the east it'll pass by just to the south of Broken Arrow Park Sibley Ville is directly in line for this storm and then the next up the line is going to be Hesper Kansas all right this is a look now at the rain shaft area look at the rains coming down this is outflow wind - oh my gosh strong winds here these are at least 60 mile an hour winds and you can see how the rain is coming straight down here but look what happens when it hits the ground it starts to put out a little foot this little foot that comes out here is the strong wind on the leading edge of this and this is what potentially could be doing tree damage and other structural damage as well so it's not just the tornado but the leading edge winds of this just incredible video to see here these winds can be very very destructive so this is what that whoosh of wind is going to be as a look at how far it is out ahead of that rain area so these winds are incredibly strong as they're moving through areas just to the south of Lawrence as well Erin what do you have on what do you hear Gary we are getting reports from crews on the ground that we potentially have a giant tornado meaning it is taking up a lot of real estate on the ground visually now right where you see the bright blue and the bright red that's where we have very strong circulation we've seen debris reports on the ground meaning this is destructive and something else to note that we've been talking about with the potential of these tornadoes these will likely not be ef-0 ef-1 tornadoes these could be very violent and long-lasting tornadoes as they are moving their way through areas of Douglas County and this is new Gary this is very important I know we're gonna go to Bret here but as of 6:16 tornado warning for areas for areas k extending through continuing through Douglas County the National Weather Service now saying this could potentially be a catastrophic event for areas of Douglas County and when the last time we use that wording over areas of Jefferson City with that tornado that we saw last week and again this is a very serious situation potentially catastrophic as we've seen the reports on the ground of a large and destructive tornado right now over areas of Pleasant Grove Kansas moving northeast at 30 miles an hour we want to get to our crews in the field as we're monitoring the storm here from the Weather Center and with our mobile Weather Center as well in the field with bread Anthony Brett where are you and exactly what's your position in relation to where this tornado is on the ground okay Erin so we're eastbound highway 56 it's still heading toward Baldwin City we're trying to get back to highway 59 to head toward Lawrence that seems to be right where that strong rotation is I just got a warning on my phone that said this was a tornado emergency so that's a dire situation for sure that has developed here and as you guys been talking about that intense rotation I'm trying to give you a long when we were far away but trying to give you a view of perhaps probably where the lowering is involved in this in this storm right now but again we're pretty far away it's at least there's some visual confirmation now it's been rain wrapped for a long time but it's we can get to highway 59 we're going to be able to zip up north and get closer and also get some some eyes on this looks like it's just crossed over highway 51 right now I think you're on it Brett so I think you're on it then it's cross highway yeah Highway Patrol says it's crossing highway 59 right now is a very large tornado right over your barn there right back there your camera is on this thing you just need to get to 59 and go north and you'll be seeing this thing and to see a lot of damage okay okay well we are we're gonna try to get there as fast as possible and get up on this yeah it's going to be something this is going to be a very dramatic event so if we can go ahead and put a little bit of Doppler radar up here too I just want to make sure that we clear as many people as we can out of the way of this storm yeah yeah it does yeah they just extended that tornado warning out obviously that's County Kansas Leavenworth County Kansas until 6:45 and that is the new tornado warning that just came in ahead of this storm we know this tornado was on the ground and destructive at this point okay I'm gonna pull up the latest warning that just came in there's so many warnings here Gary so I'm gonna pull this off again tornado warning for Johnson and Leavenworth Kansas until 6:45 as this storm is moving northeast at 35 miles an hour okay Aaron let's zoom in a little bit here let's go ahead and lose this storm relative velocity scope move in right into this area here in the south side of Lawrence a little bit tighter that's broken arrow Park right there now if we can put the scope on top of this we'll take a look at this and I think choppers going to be in a very close relation to this okay choppers ready to go this is the large tornado right here just a little bit so this is well let's go take chopper chopper is right over choppers right over this right now so you can see it that's it that that's the rain shaft area chopper five just to the south of Lawrence but just adjacent to the rain chef is where this large tornado is locate and maybe maybe embedded within the rain do you see that Erin yes and you and actually I mean just put posting this now for the National Weather Service to watch our coverage as well of the tornado yes I agree yeah that it I thought I saw it yeah do you see a cone inside of that rain if that's the case that would be a it would be air yeah it's right there it's it yeah it's it's within its embedded within the rain and that is large that is at least a hundred to two hundred yards wide if that indeed is the and I believe that is I believe so - given that we knew we would have very large and potentially destructive tornadoes and again we cannot emphasize this enough right now if you are hearing the sirens you need to be in the lowest level of your home away from those exterior walls and windows this has been labeled as a potentially catastrophic event as this storm is now moving into more populated areas okay but you could do well there's another there's another power flashes I believe Gary that we're seeing either that are lightning well thankfully at least from this vantage point it doesn't look to be a very heavily populated area but again it's just to the south of Lawrence right now passing by just to the south of Broken Arrow Park which is on the south side of Lawrence that's getting down to about 35th Street you may be a little bit farther south than that yeah that's all that's all air that's flowing into the storm these are inbound winds from the top to Oread Hotel that's what you're looking at from that city cam picture there it's a violent storm from all directions we have strong inflow we have incredibly strong outflowing winds coming out of that rain shaft area and of course where everything kind of meets we have a destructive and large tornado that does appear to be rain wrapped on the south side of Lawrence Kansas right now very very close to Lawrence is where the chopper is located at this hour and you can see right here at this hour it looks like it's completely dark outside even though we still have a little bit more than an hour of daylight left to go a little bit more than an hour and that's it's that dark this is just an incredible storm that's moving by just to the south side of Lawrence Highway Patrol said that they saw the tornado as it crossed 59 highway south of Lawrence as a large tornado crossing the highway and we have been watching the rotation on this storm as it's been picking up speed and it's been picking up in intensity as well Ellen what do you have return vehicles a number of reports are coming in so Lawrence Police just tweeted this out deputies following the storm are having trouble seeing the tornado because of the heavy rain reports of damage and overturned vehicles are coming in rapidly right now to dispatch I'm assuming that dispatch is just getting lit up right now with calls of damage and problems well this is just incredible because it's almost impossible to see this tornado but it's inside of that curtain of rain that you're looking at if you look there it is oh you can see it from time to time you can see that large wedge inside of the rain this is the is such a dangerous event you can't see this it's so completely camouflaged now it looks like there are some oh there was a flash there too I think you're right in their power yeah I think that those are power lines that are snapping and just given that this is potentially a catastrophic event I think there we go I think we need to get the storm track because as this tornado is continuing to move its way off towards the north and the East more and more cities will be impacted from the storm I'm going to move this box here so that you can see the very latest cities that are in the path of this dangerous tornado that is on the ground and when we see those flashes that you are seeing right now again what you see here on the big box on the left-hand side of your screen that is News chopper 5 as we are monitoring this rain-wrapped tornado but at times it looks like a lightning flash but I think what we are seeing power surges as some of them we may be losing power as these storms are continuing to move through areas of Douglas County and again very tight circulation with this rain wrap tornado we have had reports from emergency managers and from storm spotters on the ground that this is a potential large destructive tornado on the ground so it's hard to tell exactly where it may begin and where it may end Gary because it may be so large that it's hard to have that scope it's just a very scary situation for areas now extending so again the latest track through Eudora about 638 just Souto about 655 moving through Edwards wheels it holds together about 715 and the latest information coming in from emergency managers again now emergency managers over areas of Leavenworth saying circulation southwestern portions of their County we could potentially have rotation a mile wide a mile wide potentially with this storm that is moving through areas of Douglas and now this will be pushing its way into the western side of the immediate metropolitan area what you see there now that is a live look from our city camera network over areas of the kayuu campus here from the orient hotel yep that's lightning Eudora is not in a safe place right now No if you live in Eudora you need to be below ground if you know if if you don't have a if you don't have an area below ground you need to be finding an interior room at the very least this is a very powerful tornado if it's a mile wide now we're getting up into the f4 f5 category type storms this is one that is basically historic in nature then just missed the city of Lawrence to the south passing by just to the south of Broken Arrow Park that puts it just on the south edge of Haskell Indian University as well so that's all going to be pushing off to the east if it maintains this same direction it's going to be crossing over to basically k10 and k10 is going to be impacted by this as well if it all stays just south of the Kansas River at last check let's go ahead and lose the track on this okay and then kind of refix ourselves a little bit get a very it's right in here this is where it is that's kind of the bullseye right there and Erin let's go ahead and lose the scope I want to point something out this is something that really I haven't seen before you see that rain free area that's the tornado yeah look how wide that is it would not surprise me at all if that's actually a mile wide but the reflectivity because it's rain rap is now being lost because that is it right there right next to Nuria so this is what you're looking at there's a down to street level it's a ton it's at 1,400 Road and this is Nuria Road so it's right over that area right now it just passed through Harper Street Haskell Avenue as we continue to track this at street level it's pushing out of the city of Lawrence if you live in North Lawrence right now you probably have a thunderstorm to deal with but this is all south and southeast of Lawrence right now at this hour getting all the way down to street level here it looks like it's passing right over this community right over where Greenway circle is located Nuria Road next up in the line let's push this off to the east a little bit let's get some people out ahead of this at least some sort of warning just to the south of 1,500th Road and this looks like it's 1900 so again moving right into that intersection area as well let's go ahead and move it farther to the east and get a little a little head start Brett's near Lawrence Brett Brenna's Bret is near Lawrence right now Brett what have you seen so far have you seen the rain shaft producing this and have you seen any signs of what appears to be a very very large tornado embedded in that rain have you seen any glimpses of it Carrie I haven't seen any glimpses of the tornado outside of just what appears to be a large gray area with intense rain and somewhere inside there is you guys were calling it out that there was a tornado wrapped inside there we have been trying to get a better perspective of it however the roads around Douglas County and around Lawrence here turn a little bit so now we need to work our way back to the north there appears to be some other kind of a circulation island called a circulation book on the western flank of this storm - just kind of curious and seeing that on the right and looking at some of the clouds but we are gonna try to go we have to go back now here to the south and come back to the north but we did see and we saw a lot of folks looking to the north as it was crossing over highway 59 couldn't make out the tornado from all the rain that was just a pretty much rain bread I have to eject arrows yes Gary I have to jump in here because we have an urgent message National Weather Service is now saying that Northwest Johnson County and also southern Leavenworth County needs to seek a seek shelter and I haven't really seen this message before but it says seek shelter immediately urgency now Gary this just came in as you walk to the weather while tornado emergency coming in for Leavenworth Wyandotte and Johnson County Kansas tornado emergency as this large destructive tornado will move over heavily populated cities within our viewing area here over the next half hour yeah we've got Eudora that's right in the path right up along the River so basically the bridge that takes you out of Eudora and over the river this tornado is going to go right over that bridge there's a golf course on the north side there it's going to go right over that golf course if you know where that's located in Eudora you're gonna be in the path if you live this is a 32 Highway right here and and who is this who's in this location is this Betsy oh there's a live pick that we have here this is a k32 awaiting that storm to arrive there hey but but I really want to put Doppler radar up here because we need to point out in areas that people need to be seeking shelter and where this storm is going this has been such a difficult storm to track because all of this is embedded in very heavy rain but we can see right through that rain because of our Doppler radar capabilities this is the storm right here just about a mile to maybe a mile and a half west northwest of Eudora it's almost right along the river right now meaning that that has passed right over K 10 and I just can't imagine that I'm gonna see if we can get some streets I know we've got him yeah we do have we do have streets down in the Eudora vicinity I know that a little bit tighter a little bit tighter and we'll get to those streets and we may have to ship this this is the action tornado right up there is where that's located this is the city of Eudora that's the bridge that goes right over the Kansas River and then you have this little highway okay well we have Emily ripman right now who's here for a report but let's keep that oh my gosh there you are Emily where exactly are you right now we're on 32 highway we are just outside of Linwood Kansas I'm sure you can hear the tornado sirens are blaring here we are on the east side of this storm we are watching it closely also staying in close contact with you all there at the station to know when we may need to move if you need to move you need to move right now that is coming straight at you Lynne woods in the path get out of there just get out of there and get to a safe location okay all right Emily is right in the middle of the path and it was bearing down on her that was the tornado that you were looking at live she's in Linwood she's right up the road and that's where that tornado is going sorry Hey didn't mean to get a little bit excited there but I'm telling you that is a life-threatening situation that she was in at that moment and she needed to get out of there and I mean too sweet north or south and just go until you're into a safe location let's expand this picture out so we can get a look at some of the towns here Aaron sweet the streets yeah let's go ahead and do towns because what we need to do is evacuate towns right now this is so wide that it's beyond just city streets it's been reported as over a mile wide so all of you Dora needs to be ducking for shelter especially on the north side this is crossing the Kansas River DeSoto you're next in line just up the road as Linwood Kansas Linwood as you saw is right in line to to be in the path of this storm again this thing is really broad I mean we could almost draw this a little bit wider but 643 it's bearing down on Linwood so again Emily only had six minutes to get out of the way of what potentially could be an f4 or f5 tornado so yes she needs to be out of the way of that I saw other emergency vehicles out there as well hopefully they will be getting out of the way as well you don't want to be in front of a storm like this that potentially could be producing winds of well over a hundred and 50 miles per hour should be in Bonner Springs at about 700 for so you do have some time but you are in line don't expect this storm to dissipate when there's this big they last literally for what could be hours at a time Edwardsville you're in the path as well and it looks like Shaunie is in the path if you live in the west side of Shawnee especially you really need to be aware that this storm is a dangerous one and it will likely hold together long enough to reach where you are located also getting into areas of southern Leavenworth County as well it's crossing the Kansas River at this point and it's moving directly into Linwood and I don't know if I can scream this out loud enough but Linwood Kansas you are in direct path of this storm this is just devastating what this storm is doing who are we going to Erin next Erin what are you here and they are said now saying so this is from emergency managers who are keeping an eye on this storm that we may have multiple vortices meaning we may have multiple spots within that tight rotation where we have circulation and potentially tornadic activity happening on the ground right now again this is a rare situation for Kansas City and areas on the west side of our viewing area this is a tornado emergency the National Weather Service saying this could potentially be catastrophic do not wait do not we have some pictures here that we have to show you Ellen what is this that we're looking at this is just south of Lawrence over near highway 59 so we are now getting pictures and video this is our crew here from the mobile weather so this should be Brett here I believe but I am seeing the same pictures now on social media of roofs ripped off of homes Brett what where are you tell us where you are because I'm starting to see pictures just like this on social media what's going on okay so we're on 59 just south of Lawrence or just south of Kate's and we came up on this house right here roof torn off power lines are down let me pan over to the southern neighborhood somebody's just running out of their house right now there's some other damage down in that neighborhood that you might be able to see and it looks like there's somebody's put a tarp up already for the rain that continues there's cars pulled over everywhere we can hear the sirens going off but again that house where just shows you the power if we go in the box alright hey I'm gonna get on this chase cuz we need to keep chasing this storm but I just wanted to give you that there is confirmed damage and it's bad damaged or anybody that sees this you need to get exactly within Lawrence what are some of this the streets or maybe subdivisions that you are next to do you have any idea give us any kind of a locator of where that's at well we may have temporarily lost breath hey we're gonna put the Doppler radar back up again because this is what is a prime concern you see that this storm does have the capability of producing a lot of damage Aaron let's expand this picture out and get it a little bit wider I mean quite a bit wider actually because I really want to get the people who are upstream Linwood you need to either be already out of town or you need to be below ground and again these are the types of tornadoes as big as they are that even an interior room doesn't necessarily mean that you're going to be perfectly safe you really need to be below ground if you possibly can so if you do live in a town that's a little bit farther upstream and you don't have a below ground area you may need to somehow find a way to get out of the way otherwise inside of closets and bathrooms about the only hope you have on something like this this storm is moving off to the east northeast Aaron now has about a 38 35 mile per hour track puts it in Shawnee at about 6:45 so that's the western edges of Shawnee so it's moving into that area now DeSoto at about 649 Bonner Springs at 6:54 that would put it on the north end of Shawnee as well it's going to clip and basically ride right along the Kansas River so the closer you are to the Kansas River the closer you are to this tornadic storm so this looks like it wants to actually kind of move more into southern Leavenworth County extreme northwest corners now our portions of Johnson County so Douglas so DeSoto is actually going to be in a direct path of this but Linwood is being hit right now Lynn woods being hit hard by this very very powerful and potentially destruct tornado that last report from what Erin said you said that there were multiple vorticity x' on this and there at Leavenworth County and now Gary I mean this is how so hard to see is we know we have this tornado on the ground and seeing more and more damage reports behind this storm we can't emphasize enough do not wait you should be in your safe shelter if you are anywhere north and east ahead of this storm okay we also have chopper video right over my shoulder we're gonna continue to try to give you as many live pictures as possible but I was just talking to the folks that are controlling this and I want to keep radar up because as much as the pictures tell us this is telling us the whole story let's go ahead and remove the track and we'll start to point a couple of things out here and we'll tighten it up just a little bit to maybe zoom it in yeah right about there this is again what you're looking at is the covered color differential super tight gate to gate shear when you have a tornado that's this big in this large it just jumps right out of the radar scope for you and that's why we have this technology for you Aaron's also showing you some of the estimated wind speeds gate to gate shear keep in mind that 58 that is meters per second could you imagine that that's over 60 yards that the wind will travel in one second so that's kind of wind that's being produced by this as that storm now pushes just to the north of DeSoto just to the north of your town so in DeSoto and is just to the north of the Kansas River here that's moving off to 120 mile per hour winds 120 Mets this is what Doppler is estimating judging by some of the wind damage and judging by some of the visual reports of how wide this is would not surprise me at all if some of these wind speeds got up in excess of a hundred fifty miles per hour so again this is a very dangerous storm as it's moving and look what's right up the line yeah that's what I'm super populated areas this could be going into areas now of northern Johnson will be getting into Wyandotte County so if you're in Wyandotte County all of Wyandotte County needs to be seeking shelter and Andy Bailey at the National Weather Service is calling this what a tornado emerged tornado emergency and he is saying do not wait I know you can hear the sirens right now on the west side of the 435 loop we have seen confirmed damage with this storm and this tornado is being labeled as a catastrophic event as it is now moving through the immediate metropolitan area on the west side of town again if you hear the sirens going off we do not want you to hesitate we want you to go to the lowest level of your home to stay away from those exterior walls and windows and worth a mention as you're moving into your safe shelters you may be moving away from the TV we are live streaming on Facebook so I know you're going to take your phone with you it's a great way to continue to get this life-saving information as we have now seen damage from this storm structure damage we're getting reports from Lawrence and that there are cars just toppled over from the Lawrence Police Department in addition to multiple crews reporting on the ground now not only the tornado but structure damage from areas of Douglas County as this is moving its way north and east again if you live on the west side of the 435 loop do not wait for this circulation to get overhead with this tornado emergency if you hear the sirens you should be in your safe shelter right now over to you Gary Amy Anderson is in Tonganoxie just to the north of this cell where it has been raining heavily but out your south window that's where this very dangerous storm is located Amy what are you seeing from your vantage point and I just want to tell you that we are going to keep Doppler radar up so you can track the tornado which is right there on the ground take it away Amy guys we are in Tonganoxie at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church we actually were seeking shelter here the sirens are going off out here they just kind of stopped but they've gone off a couple times and then restarted again you can see out here looking out over this area behind the church there's a lot of thunder a lot of lightning we don't have a lot of wind in this area but it has been raining very hard and we just thought we heard a little bit of hail coming down this church has a basement as we were pulling in looking for a place where we might be able to seek shelter if we needed to while we were out storm chasing there were several other people that pulled up and they're in the basement of this church right now we just wanted to kind of pop up kind of see what was going on I do need to touch base with our meteorologist to find out exactly where the storm is in relation to us right now it's been a few minutes and I know this has been very fast-moving but here in Tonga noxee very very heavy rain lots of lightning right now the sirens are off hopefully they're gonna stay off and that's a good sign for the people here in Tonganoxie but that is what's happening in our area right now we'll send it back to you all right thank you so much Jamie again this does not appear to be losing any of its circulation right now this is Bonner Springs directly directly in path of this storm arriving at about 657 you've got ten minutes ten minutes and it's there so I'd be in below ground now and this is where that storm is located at this hour so it's just a little bit northwest of De Soto I had estimated about four to four and a half miles north-northwest of DeSoto it is on the north side of the river near DeSoto where the tightest circulation is located just south of i-70 but it's north of k10 as that storm continues to push off to the east it is right now in southern Leavenworth County so it is on the north side of the river had passed through areas just south of Lawrence it's now north of the Kansas River it's in Leavenworth County but only the extreme southern edges of Leavenworth County Northwest Johnson County the sirens are going off and they're telling everybody upstream from this storm that this is a tornado emergency and to seek shelter immediately no waiting no going outside to see if you can see it you need to be seeking shelter as quickly as you can below ground and also cover up once you're down there because this storm is going to be very very devastating as it moves across the area also of importance to might be noting that this storm that Aaron has zoomed in on right now is just south of i-70 so i-70 may seeing some effects of this as well you can see here some of the smaller little tiny communities that are in this portion of southern Leavenworth County that may be impacted by this Linwood Kansas absolutely on the north side of Linwood just complete devastation here with some wind speeds that are likely in excess of a hundred 50 miles per hour within of this okay bread Anthony is in the is giving us the picture here just outside of Lawrence have you I'm sure you've seen more than that just that one bit of damage Bret because about the time you picked this storm up on highway 59 is when this thing became a monster yeah on the southeast side of Lawrence Gary so we saw several power poles just toppled and it looks like the tornado just shaved or mowed the trees down along k10 on the southeast side of Lawrence out to where a cake ten starts to head east back toward Johnson County lots of you know those big street signs or directional signs just knocked over lots of that the only structures we saw we're back there near 1100 road and highway 59 and right now we're crossing over the Wakarusa River and we're back into that rain wrapped heavy portion of the rain as it's coming down we are trying to catch up to this storm and where if we see any more damage we'll pass it along but but it crossed over K 10 the damage path did from southeast side of Lawrence then over highway 59 then on the south side of K 10 for a couple of miles and then up onto the north side of K 10 now we're just passing adora here so I'll keep my eye out for any more damage but we're trying to get back to the to get to the south underneath this storm and then lift back up north toward it maybe we can catch a visual of it we know it's a rain wrapped intense storm at this time we're live on K 10 in the mobile weather center of KCTV 5 meteorologist pred Anthony okay we'll be safe out there Bret you're still not in the safest place in the world but again just be as safe as you can behind the wheel this is Emily ripman who's in Eudora right now Emily I'm glad to see that you've got out of the way of that massive tornado you had us scared to death here in the studio I'm glad that you're safe but tell me what kind of damage are you running into near Eudora Eudora again heavily hit by this tornado we were trying to make our way to an area that we were told there was some damage to homes but as we are trying to make our way down 166 Street here as you can see there is a lot of trees down in the roadway that is causing quite a traffic jam here at the moment we you can't see through our camera just right from this angle but the roadway is completely blocked by large trees here in this area I'm going to try and pan with our GoPro and give you a look even more trees are down over in this yard over here of this home and just back down the road from where we are right now we saw quite a few tweet trees that were all twisted I'm hoping you can see some of those trees off there in the distance where the tops of them appear to be sheared so quite a lot of tree damage right here in this area but we'll continue the garbade to the other location where we heard that there was some homes that had some damage as well all right well it looks like it's not going to be too much longer before Wyandotte County is going to get into the into the act here as well this is the tornado right here and it is still massive producing winds likely an excess that means higher than a 150 miles per hour and you're looking right over my shoulder at some of the damage that this tornado has produced in Eudora also we had pictures of tree Aarav of houses that were shredded just to the south of Lawrence as well as that tornado moved through but this is a just an absolutely menacing storm step out of the picture here so you can see some of the towns are going to be in line of this Bunner Springs this is moving right into Bonner Springs right now if you live in Bonner Springs you need to be below ground now no getting out of the know trying to leave or get out of the way you've got nine minutes nine minutes and this tornado is going to be in downtown Bonner Springs and it does look like it is going to be moving into the downtown Bonner Springs area chopper five is near Bonner Springs right now that's what you're looking at in your video window again looking at that powerful storm and Aaron this is I think the biggest tornado that I've seen in Kansas City since 2003 2004 and it maybe came yeah it might be bigger than those potentially anyway well and a new warning Gary so now we're hearing the sirens going off not just for Johnson County but for Leavenworth in Wyandotte County now a tornado warning has been issued this has now been extended for Leavenworth in Wyandotte County until 7:15 the wording is strong because the concern is very high of life threatening weather we've had reports on the ground we've seen multiple areas of damage behind this storm now of a catastrophic tornado moving its way into the Westside now of our viewing area west side of the 435 loop again tornado emergency in effect if you are anywhere ahead of this storm do not wait until we see that strongest circulation where you are if you hear the sirens going off right now you need to be in your safe shelter and as you are going to your safe shelter keep in mind you may not have the TV in your basement or in your bathrooms and the lowest level of your home I know you have your phone stay connected with us on our Facebook pages we're going to be live-streaming this as this tornado continues through areas extending now and out tornado warning in effect until 7:15 for Johnson Leavenworth Wyandotte County Kansas until 7:15 this potentially has the track to move its way right over the i-70 corridor from areas very closed through a DeSoto just to your north by about five miles if you're in Bonner Springs you need to be in your safe shelter right now and early heads up to you for areas extending through the Speedway right over the 435 extending through i-70 interchanges this storm is lifting its way off towards the north and the east and I'm gonna zoom this in even here a bit more I mean this is new I 70 and this is from the National Weather Service Gary do not travel i-70 near Wyandotte and Leavenworth County over that line the tornado is about to cross the i-70 corridor between areas of Wyandotte and Leavenworth County so I'm gonna zoom this in here I'm going to get rid of the storm track and we can go all the way down to street level I'm going to add back on that velocity so we can see where exactly it's right there folks right there now let me zoom in and show you some of the streets ahead of this storm over areas extending now if you were in Bonner Springs i-70 north along i-70 through that 435 interchanged you should be in your safe shelters right now we're gonna go all the way down to street level here and again the storm is just off to the west of Bonner Springs but I want to give you a heads up areas of Bonner spring so Leavenworth Street 137 Street 130 8th Street if you live on Nettleton Avenue a hundred and thirtieth Street over areas of again near we're extending here on near areas of DeSoto I'm gonna move this up because again the National Weather Service saying do not travel along i-70 from areas of Wyandotte and Leavenworth County so here's Kansas Avenue as it goes straight across I 70 and this is where that potentially destructive tornado will be moving in so areas right over let me see here we've got 140 second at Kansas Avenue all the way to 120 second you should be in your safe place right now again this storm has produced damage we have had multiple damage reports coming in from areas just south of Lawrence the Lawrence Police Department saying we have roofs that are damaged structures that are damaged and we have seen cars over returned where this storm has already passed a tornado emergency now when the National Weather Service these are rare when the National Weather Service issues a tornado emergency that's because we have confirmed reports that a tornado is on the ground and it's now moving into a highly populated area as we are continuing to monitor the latest again the latest reports now coming in from emergency managers in Leavenworth County saying homes are off of their foundation five miles southwest of Lynwood it's hard to hear Gary homes are off of their foundation over areas of Linwood County Kansas again if you are anywhere near bays are extending through Bonner west side of the 435 loop this extends to the Northland from areas of Parkville extending up near zona rosa westside through areas of Shawnee oh there it is right there there it is we're getting a look at that you should be and you're safe that's the legends area that's the legend let's pull that picture out just a little bit you can see it right over the top of the Kansas Speedway that is a monster of a tornado this is near the legends yes all all you see how this is all working its way up into the clouds this is the tornado but we're not even getting the full picture let's broaden this picture out a little bit and take a look at this can we can we widen it this whole thing is the tornado this is just amazing how large this is absolutely it is and it's moving right towards the camera by the way so this is again without without the grandstands or the speedway in the way you'd see the full effects of this storm but that's how close it's getting to the legends area it's only about four miles away and it's approaching very very quickly but again a very very dangerous and very destructive storm on this cell and now it has had a super long path on it started to get reports of perhaps tornadoes just north of Emporia and here it is in Kansas City and it is still on the ground and it is still ripping things up in fact it's about as big as it's been at some points that was s to that the width of this tornado was a mile wide that would put it in the f4 f5 category if that were the case and that could even be producing wind speeds of up to 200 miles per hour so this is an absolutely devastating storm weather service for Andy Bailey at the Pleasant Hill office have been telling people that this is a particularly dangerous storm obviously and that people need to just clear out and don't even mess with this thing just get down below below ground level as soon as you possibly can but this very very dangerous storm is right now just to the west of the legends area from the vantage point of the Nebraska Furniture Mart which is where this cameras located if you were to look from Nebraska Furniture Mart straight over the grandstand area of the Kansas Speedway the tornado is about two miles now maybe three just to the west southwest of that point Erin's got a perfect fix on this this is Doppler radar Bonner Springs right here the Kansas Speedway is located roughly right here you're looking directly at that tornado from the Nebraska Furniture Mart and it looks like it's going to be moving directly towards the Nebraska Furniture Mart as well so this tornado is moving straight at the camera right now going to be going right over the Kansas Speedway and I hate to imagine some of the images we're gonna see when the Kansas Speedway starts to get hit by this tornado I don't see anywhere this is stopping but Bonner Springs it's right in your town right now and I'm sure that oh my gosh as big as this is and it has already leveled houses all the way down to the foundation as you heard before from Ellen Ellen are you getting any more reports of some of the damage and what's been in the path already of this big giant tornado yeah so I've been following especially Lawrence Police and Lawrence Police has said that they were just inundated with calls and that they made sure first that all of their officers and all the deputies in Douglas County were accounted for first they have all been accounted for and now those deputies and police officers are going out in Lawrence to look at some of the damage that has happened in Douglas County but if you are watching here we are actually tweeting at Nebraska Furniture Mart we are tweeting the folks at the Kansas Speedway to tell them to be safe because I mean as you guys can imagine Nebraska Furniture Mart is having like this huge Memorial Day sale right now it is it's huge and it is full is you guys know that place is full of not only people and employees but also furniture and I mean can you imagine I'm so you've got to be in a safe place if you were anywhere near the legends area or Nebraska Furniture Mart area we have seen some of the damage from Brett Anthony in the Lawrence area where homes have the roofs have been ripped off and of course homes have been ripped off of their foundation in the Linwood area we want to go now to Brett Anthony who has seen some of this damage firsthand he's in with the mobile Weather Center Brett where are you what do you see in and again our concern right now is the legends area because it looks like it's going to be a direct hit hi Ellen good evening everyone we are on K 10 just west of Olathe I've got the mobile weather center 360 camera pointed to the north these trees are obscuring obscuring our view right now but a moment ago I thought I saw the tornado and as it continues to move up toward Bonner Springs we're gonna get on k7 and head north and try to if you just watch carefully you might see it pop up here the viewed from down here it's pretty clear and we're good looking up to the north again that cameras pointed north as we continue to move to the east so a lot of cars are pulling over right there it might be right you can see it right the base of it right there just look at that mass and the wide thing right there so that's and we're still several miles away from it but at least we now can get a good visual of just maybe how wide this thing is and how strong it is we want to go back to k7 North so we're gonna have to whip around here and get back in that other direction so let's well let let us reposition ourselves and then we will we'll get back on this real soon here for you okay we'll send it back to you in the studio Alan we do have some video I believe that you guys want to show is that right or we should just take this live picture now that mean this is just incredible yes Lou Gary keep it up yeah I'd like to leave the radar up if we possibly can if we're gonna show anything I'd like it to be in the small window Andy Bailey from the Pleasant Hill office said use the strongest language you know how to use to get people into shelter I've never heard that statement put out by a Weather Service office but they just did it use the strongest language you have to get people out of the way of this storm and I a hundred percent agree I've seen a lot of tornado signatures on Doppler radar I don't think I've ever seen one that's been this vivid this is absolutely the strongest tornado that I have ever seen and it is right now right over Bonner Springs again we'll send some crews in there to check on the people of Bonner Springs to make sure that they can read that they get through this storm but after Bonner Springs it looks like it's moving directly towards the legends area and you're looking at a live picture of this tornado right now the storm that's producing that it's located just bit well you have Nebraska Furniture Mart where the camera is you're looking at the grandstands of the Kansas Speedway and directly behind that is the tornado and you're looking at the tornado on live power Doppler radar on the left-hand side of your television screen Aaron just put up and it looks like right now it Bonner Springs is getting slammed by that potential what could be an f5 tornado this thing is huge estimated a mile wide at some point Edwardsville you can see the arrival there at about 708 so it's right at Edwardsville right now parkville at 7:25 gladstone at about 744 & Claycomo at 753 as that will move across the Metro this tornado erin has shown no signs of easing up I thought maybe at some point it would start to fracture a bit but so far it's really maintaining its momentum well and that was the concern that we had the moment that this tornado watch was issued about three o'clock this afternoon that we would not only see the potential for tornadoes but that they could be long lasting and very destructive violent tornadoes and again we have in a tornado emergency for areas of the Kansas City metropolitan area as we have had confirmed reports of this tornado on the ground and behind this storm system we've already had our crews here at KCTV 5 showing us rooms and home structures completely damaged we've had reports from storm spotters on the ground that we've had complete homes taken off of their foundation as this storm has now passed and we're continuing to get the latest information again if you live over areas of Edwardsville parkville North Moore Gladstone and I know these are the same cities that have had tornadoes in the past here in Kansas City now is the time do not hesitate again the national weather service saying this is a life threatening situation and the media should be using the strongest language possible we are not hyping this by any means the strongest language possible to make sure that people are in their safe spaces right now here in Kansas City on the west side of town Edwardsville anybody that lives near the legends area anybody that lives near the Kansas Speedway you need to be aware that this is a dangerous storm that will be passing right over the legends area it's going to be passing right over the Schlitterbahn waterpark area and it's going to be hitting basically full force into the central portions of Wyandotte County so right now if you can hear the tornado sirens you need to get below ground this potentially could be a mile-wide tornado this isn't something that just rips up your house a little bit this has been taking houses completely off the foundation so again this is the kind of dangerous storm that none of us want to see but it's happening right now and it's hitting the Metro very very hard and it looks like that will be moving into areas on the north side of Kansas City and into the parkville area as well and this shows no signs of easing up at all Elliot if you can hear me he told me that he has some video of the tornado forming and Lawrence so if we can take a quick little look at that I don't want it I don't want to leave the radar for very long that's it now this is this is just when it was beginning this was shot by Jacob Collins this is near Lawrence look how massive this tornado is already and this was in the beginning stages after that it was estimated at one point that this tornado was a mile wide that would put it in the f5 category you get up to a mile wide now you're talking about wind speeds of up to 200 miles per hour and of course all of that comes out later but I wanted to get back to the radar to show you this Aaron if you could remove that track and then re rebuild the track and shift everything map and everything to include more of the metro because this is really starting to include some of the most densely populated portions of Kansas City it's going right through Wyandotte County right now right along the county line between Johnson County and Wyandotte County Aaron's kind of eyes is splitting this tornado right in the middle so the leading edge of this is actually going to arrive just a couple of minutes before what you're gonna see but this is moving into the Edwardsville area right now what do you have here in Wyandotte County 123rd and state Avenue those are some exact locations of where this tornado is on the ground right now in Wyandotte County well you know what why not County emergency managers right now in Wyandotte County is saying that spotters are seeing multiple vortices spotted south and west of this Speedway again multiple vortices south and west of the Speedway and along areas of k32 damage now being reported on the backside of this storm system as well again multiple vortices again just south and west of the legends the west side of the 435 loop for areas right through the speedway oh you can you can see them there in your video window that's a live picture that you're looking at at the Kansas Speedway that's where the multiple vortices are right now just on the right hand side so you can watch those at that at that moment but I also want to point this out Aaron if we can go ahead and zoom in let's get all the way down to street level and start tracking along the streets between Edwardsville and about the Kansas Speedway let's just lose the track altogether on this at least for right now we'll get back to that I was married they just extended the tornado warning to include areas of clay Jackson Platte County Missouri tornado warning again this is a potentially life-threatening situation as this storm is now moving east at 30 miles an hour the sirens now going off for clay Jackson and Platte County on the Missouri side as we are watching this tornado on the ground also our producer telling me KCI they are moving folks to safe shelters they're now ahead of this storm as well for all folks at KCI on north side of the 435 loop okay so let me point this out what you're looking at in the Box right here is the tornado it's kind of embedded within the rains but it's in there it's moving right over the kansas speedway vicinity this is the storm that's producing that these red polygons are indicating the path of the storm this now is our velocity scope storm relative and it's right now right there is your tornado have multiple vortices so it's lost some of its classic signature of a single Vorta see but there are multiple vortices being indicated in this let's bend that back down just a little bit more East northeasterly perfect track on that as it moves off to these let's go ahead and zoom in let's go ahead and lose the track on this again Erin but you can see some of the town's Lake Quivira 7:16 Shawnee 7:26 especially in the north side of Shawnee and then it gets into Kansas City and Claycomo after 7:30 but let's lose the track so we could show you down to street level where this is hitting this is the turner district that's the piper district all being impacted at this hour Piper just to the south the farther south you live the more impacted you will be getting right down here you can see grincher Heights Stoney Point hitting you right now this is covering like all of Edwardsville at this hour - and my heart goes out to anybody that might live in that Edwardsville area if we slide this off to the east we'll start to get some of those streets in the grunter Heights area that may be impacted by this as this storm there we go now we're down to Street and Evon ooh basically it's right along Kansas Avenue and just to the south parallel Parkway is going to be impacted by this over in the ledges vicinity as well this is Riverview Avenue right now it's just now the leading edge of the winds at about 78th Street Bread Anthony is on 435 near Johnson Drive right now heading north Brett you're just a couple miles south of this and it's just about to cross 435 now what have you seen so far I'm sure you can see the ominous skies to the north of you yeah Gary it looks like it's almost corkscrewing down from the cloud toward the ground and it's a very large tornado again rain wrap but you can just see right in here basically this is going to be the tornado itself and we are right now just underneath Johnson Drive 435 north in fact we're half a mile away from holiday Drive and we're going back into that intense rain again and it comes down and again just obscures everything and that's what makes this storm so so hard to see I want to say scary frightening dangerous might be words to we are gonna try to get some more eyeballs we went underneath that rock ledge there so let me look out to the east again well you're right by the way on his part here yet you are right by the old devil in a dryer and you should be crossing a Kansas River very shortly as you get probably you're gonna be coming right up on this thing Brett and keep in mind that this now has been reported they'd be to having multiple tornadoes on the ground so again at one point we heard that it was a mile wide and then all of a sudden we heard that there were multiple tornadoes all kind of making one large one and that may be what it's doing right now it's right over the legends area so by the time you get to the legends area this is going to be on the east side of the 435 loop that's the Kansas River right there just now north of Lawrence as soon as bread is on the other side he will be into I believe that will be Wyandotte County that or it's going to be southern Leavenworth they all kind of come together right there on the north side of the river so it'll be Wyandotte County so Brett Seattle now hitting that heavy rain hey dub Brett Beebe be very cautious here you're still about four miles to the south but once you get up to that tornado it is going to be rain wrap so you're driving from the heavy rain and then all of a sudden you're going to be right on the outside edge of that tornado so don't go barreling into this thing please once you get up now we won't okay once you get very very close make sure that that you kind of ease up a little bit watch the wind and and then watch for damage too because this thing could be kicking debris all the way over the interstates and again just want to mention that anybody that lives anywhere between the legends area and downtown if you live anywhere between the legends and downtown Kansas City you need to be below ground right now Andy Bailey at the Pleasant Hill office and the National Weather Service said use the strongest language you can to get people into shelter and this is an absolutely serious situation right now Erin let's go ahead and lose that tracking box and the track okay I want to make sure that we get a good look of exactly where this tornado is located thankfully at least from my vantage point it appears as though the signature appears to be weakening a little bit and that's what The Weather Service said two minutes ago as well they said that it may be recycling though so you and I know what that means it may have lost a little bit of its tight circulation but by no means do we want you to let your guard down is this tornado warning continues for the immediate metropolitan area I got potentially dangerous life threatening weather over areas of 435 the loop there through Wyandotte County that's new information coming in from the National Weather Service right now Gary right well now it looks like it's right along i-70 and it's in between 435 and 635 right there where Aaron's taking us down right on down so Stoney Point Turner look especially if you live just on the northern portion of the turner district you're gonna be right exact look at that's right over and you're looking at a live picture there from the legends area it just ped passed through but evidently the Nebraska Furniture Mart parking lot appears to have been spared by this tornado as it fractured up into multiple tornadoes and likely danced right around most of that area but again some very very lucky folks with their car at the Nebraska Furniture Mart parking lot area does not appear at least from where this camera is pointed if we could start to shift that camera from side to side we can see if we can pick up some damage in that area but again the legends area right in line right now it looks like the tornado is east of the 435 interstate so went directly over the Schlitterbahn waterpark area you're looking out over Nebraska furniture this is pointed more to the north over towards the Cabela's from Nebraska Furniture Mart now as we kind of pan the skies you're looking more over the building tops typically we don't show you the building tops on this but because we can pan 360 I'll do it anyway because I don't care if you can see an air-conditioner unit or not we're looking for that's the biggest tornado hit Kansas City potentially since the Ruskin Heights tornadoes in the 50s and Gary I'm now getting reports from storm spotters that we do have damage on the ground near Bonner Springs along i-70 yet they're saying that some of the highway signs are crumpled like pieces of paper along i-70 near Bonner Springs and reports of trees that are just ripped out of the ground again this just follows that path of destruction that started over area south of Lawrence now through Bonner as we're watching this very dangerous situation tornado emergency continuing for the immediate metropolitan area hey have we heard from any hospitals if there if there are any injuries being reported yet no we will check on that I will check on that right now for you Gary Governor Laura Kelly is on Twitter right now and she's urging all Kansas Citians all anyone who lives in the metro area please take shelter immediately this is a serious tornado emergency that is coming from Governor Laura Kelly in Kansas well right now it is moving into the most extreme northeast corner here at least in the metro area of Kansas it is now crossing the river at least the leading edge of this tornado complex I guess is the best way to put this Erin now has the latest track on this all you're gonna see our Missouri towns so this is now moving out of Kansas it's crossing the river into Missouri right now and it's going to be into North Kansas City Kansas City north and it will be there within 10 minutes so if you live in Parkville Gladstone North Kansas City Kansas City North all areas downtown and then north across the river you are next and you need to be in your shelter right now in fact if I were living in Liberty I'd be scrambling at this point this storm is moving in your direction as well it does appear as though it's going to move to the north of Independence but if you live in Independence but live on the north end closer to the river you need to be seeking shelter immediately okay nathan is in Gladstone right now Nathan Vickers Nathan you are in a direct path of this storm right now in the Gladstone area especially if you happen to be on the south side of Gladstone tell me what you're seeing right now and then tell me that your going to be seeking shelter soon yeah we are going to be seeking shelter very soon we can hear the sirens going off here in Gladstone were right off Englewood and highway 169 and we can see the dark clouds in the sky it looks like there's some really intense rain over there and we're seeing a lot of whiting from where we are so we can hear the siren it's clearly moving right across from where we are we're just south of it so we're sort of watching this coming across the state line right now and we are continuing to I keep an eye on where you are right now and again the latest in Meishan coming in here at kctv5 against storm spotters just within the last two minutes our storm spotters on the ground so these are going to be emergency managers from Johnson County Kansas these are trained weather spotters saying that they are continuing to see rotation near 435 and State Avenue as we are continuing to monitor minute by minute this storm as it's moving its way right over the Kansas City metropolitan area on the right-hand side of your screen that is News chopper 5 again it's hard to delineate where we have just dark it looks like oh there's a cone shape there's definitely a cone shape there you see that on the upper right there was a it's very obscured with the rain but there was definitely a cone shape there in KCK right now which is exactly where this storm is located and again the National Weather Service is just now extending that tornado warning again clay Jackson Platte County now until 8:00 p.m. confirmed large and extremely dangerous tornado located right over Kansas City near Lake Quivira moving to the east at 35 miles an hour and again the National Weather Service saying to all of the media here in town use the strongest wording that you can to make sure that people are in their safe shelters do not wait if the sirens are going off and you can hear them right now if you're getting those weather alerts on your phone we want you to be in your basement the lowest level of your home exterior walls and windows stay away from all of them as we are continuing to watch this life-threatening a situation again tornado emergency in effect for areas of the downtown immediate 435 loop and again that's news chopper 5 right now on the right hand side of your screen as we're watching this storm not only here in the weather center at KCTV 5 but in the air as well all right Erin let's go ahead and reposition the radar again let's lose the track on this one and then reposition the radar just a little bit go ahead and take the storm velocity scope off let's expand this picture out a little bit more and it looks like we have some flood warnings that are on this as well let me turn those off just so we have some clarity we have a lot going on here well you know what what well your repositioning the radar let's go back to Ellen again who has some updated information on some of the damage reports that have been coming in Ellen yes so we're seeing a lot of video right now and a lot of photos now from the Lawrence area just south of Lawrence where it touched down a lot of homes there roofs have been ripped off trees have been toppled cars obviously damaged cars just tossed around we're also hearing right now that KCI Erin mentioned that folks at KCI were being put into the garage shelters and that's exactly what's happening right happening right now at KCI Brad Stevens is heading up towards KCI and he's reported back that not only is there heavy rain but also green skies and if you're familiar with tornadoes you know that the sky can sometimes turn an eerie color of green so Brad is reporting that up near the KCI the sky looks green obviously you got to be very careful okay now we're also getting reports of downtown Kansas City sirens going off here let's listen [Music] we've also heard them going off in fairway where we're located and once again Erin and Gary you guys are tracking the storm the tornado on the ground in the Wyandotte County area we are hearing reports of massive damage in Linwood closer to Lawrence and we're trying to get in touch with our crews out there who are looking at the damage there but right now Parkville Bonner Springs certainly that's what we're watching and I'm looking on social media right now for reports of damage but that's something we're gonna be following all night long and and honestly in the coming days ahead because we know the storm is just massive yeah it definitely is massive and right now that most dangerous portion of the storm is basically in a straight line between Kansas City and Parkville starting to lose some of its classic signature shape it doesn't mean that this is by any means weakening again it just could be in a recycling phase where the storm kind of breaks apart into multiple tornadoes and then it may come back together again it's one massive tornado but again this has been a very long tracked tornado that's been up and down from the skies all the way from just north of Emporia now all the way into Kansas City and it actually has been striking the metro area doing damage in many locations I think there is just around Lawrence and Northeast Douglas County appears to be hit the hardest although we do need to go assess some of the paths here which was very close to Linwood Kansas and over towards Bonner Springs as well chopper five is in the Northland right now been tucked in captain Greg right along with this tornado all along its path and has been giving us wonderful pictures of this tornado which has been basically camouflaged and obscured by the heavy rain that's been falling so it's been a very very difficult at least visually storm to track with your eyeballs but it's been a very easy one to track with the help of Doppler radar and our storm relative velocity scope that Aaron is on right now in fact speaking of that Aaron if we could reposition that will tighten in on that radar just a little bit and again as you look at the video screen to your you can see that storm let's go ahead and zoom the whole thing in a little bit get a little bit closer to Wyandotte County so we get the Weather Service there saying that there is not the clear rotation that they were seeing about 10 or 15 minutes ago but again what they are watching still very closely is gonna be on the eastern side of Wyandotte County so it's that same area that we've been monitoring here at KCTV 5 as well as zoom it in here for you now yeah and chopper 5 is all over this and I don't see a funnel or a tornado at the moment and again that would kind of match what we're looking at here on the Doppler radar screen but don't think that you're in the clear sometimes these things will basically dissolve away from time to time typically when you have a massive tornado and that's what we were dealing with throughout the afternoon hours when that goes through the phase of decaying it'll fracture up into multiple tornadoes like a series of weaker ones and then it may completely collapse but because of the strong updrafts and the strong rotation within the storm sometimes that will cycle right back again and everything will form back up again you talk about tornadoes kind of skipping well that's kind of the cycle that they're going through so it may be in the process of a skip at the moment but if you live in the line of this very very dangerous cell from parkville to Kansas City to Avondale to Gladstone Birmingham and especially around Liberty ok and this is Bob from Douglas County Emergency Management okay yes it is okay Bob tell me what what what do you have and what kind of information can you give us from what this tornado did in Douglas County today right Gary uh what you're talking about definitely was a tornado south of Lawrence we've had confirmed reports of damage to homes a few miles south of Lawrence in the Pleasant Grove area and the area known as burg acres and we've had several homes significantly damaged in that area first responders are in the area clearing that those houses and making sure everybody is out okay again though we've had no reports of injuries power lines down all over in that area south of Lawrence it to track toward the Northeast kind of uh along the track of the Wakarusa River toward Eudora and the touchdown the first report week out of it was at 6:15 this evening ok well it's been on the ground for a long long time hey we were hearing reports that houses were completely taken off their foundation can you confirm any of that I've heard a report of that I haven't seen it visually the first responders are still out trying to assess all that we're getting bits and pieces as you can imagine it's kind of frantic right now as these reports come in but I I did receive a report from someone who said they were in their basement and their house was gone oh my and they're fine they're fine oh my gosh has he had any injury reports that he knows none no injury reports that we have received ok well it's still early in the evening obviously but oh my gosh if Douglas County can survive something like that because we heard reports here that some people were saying now III don't know if this is true or not that this could have been perhaps as wide as a mile wide I can't come in on that Gary I haven't heard but I'm seeing some video that I'm not sure what the source of it is but you know it's kind of hit and miss what I'm seeing on video where the damage is you know a house seriously damaged here and then one not far away within the same video frame that's not so I'm not I'm not sure about that do you have any information for folks who now the storm has passed I'm imagining you do not want people out looking to see if they can find any damage in their neighborhoods that you just want people to stay where they're at so your emergency officials can get where they need to be to help those folks tonight well you took the words right out of my mouth our Sheriff's Department is reporting that they cannot do their job because so many people have headed south to try to look at the damage and they need those it's open they need to be able to get in there and do their assessment again it's potentially dangerous because of power lines down and they just need to be able to do their job so yes absolutely we would ask that people stay out of that area and let the emergency services personnel do their job all right well hey thank you so much Bob you've got a busy night ahead of you we're gonna go ahead and cut you loose but I do appreciate all the information you've given us from Douglas County that's Bob from the Douglas County emergency managers office all right let's get back to the radar and again we're gonna find the heaviest rotation of this Aaron as we go ahead and lose all of the Box let's lose the track let's widen this out just a little bit more again so we can kind of get a fix of where this tornado is located there's the latest polygon there's still a tornado warning on this storm and it is covering areas of Parkville it's covering northeast sections of Wyandotte County it's covering Northwest sections of Jackson County and also it looks like Clay County and maybe even a portion of Platt maybe in this one as well yeah clay Platte and Wyandotte counties here it is impacting about a hundred and eighty seven thousand people let's go ahead and lose that box and then we'll put a scope on this see if we can still find some rotation we lost our rotation out of this but let's go right into this vicinity right in here I see just very broad rotation out of this you can see a thunderstorm warning now has been issued to four areas of Platte and clay counties but again looking at the scope let's go and lose that scope and then broaden it back out again we may have to use a wider version of this and again Aaron can adjust the size of the scope and everything that's inside of that is what we call storm relative velocity which basically shows us the winds inside of that tornadic thunderstorm right now you can see that we have the inbound and outbound flowing winds right there most dangerous part of this storm right now is crossing the Missouri River between Wyandotte County and Kansas City so right there that's near the wheeler Airport as well so the wheeler Airport vicinity is kind of right in the midst of all that action it is moving into the Northland right now we'll be impacting areas especially in the southern portions of Gladstone that means Liberty is right up the road there as well and we've got Brad on the phone where is he in what's he seeing yeah so you were just talking about the Northland and Brad is right by KCI right now so parkville area just north of KCI Brad you'd reported that the skies were green what's it like right now well it was your five minutes ago that uh me and my colleague caroline sweeney we're driving one about a mile away from the airport on 29th riding northbound and we both got two fairly large pieces of debris just fall out of the sky it looks like there were pieces of roofing we couldn't tell exactly what they were but clearly we immediately got off i29 and took shelter at that point the rain right now is coming down so hard are the drive and visibility is almost non-existent we're pulling into a KPI right now where employees have been told to take shelter and it's hard for us even to stay on the road right now because the water that pulled up on the road so um clearly a situation you don't want to be in so we're going to continue to keep an eye on things out here at KCI and we'll be listening scary and you are there back in the studio to tell us where we don't need to go and where we need areas to avoid but again two pieces of debris fell out of the sky as we were driving down i29 we immediately put shelter but it got back on the road and we are storm chasing right now so Ellen yeah glad that you and Caroline are okay now you talked about the debris and the National Weather Service of Kansas City tweeted out recently that the debris is in fact falling from the sky from this tornado and that was reported along i-70 and north and northeast of Edwardsville and Gary you talked about Edwardsville and you said that your heart went out to those people in Edwardsville because it looks like that tornado was it was going to be a direct hit Brad were glad that you and Caroline are okay certainly a scary situation when debris is just falling out of the sky but that certainly would indicate that this is a massive massive storm where so are you guys getting to shelter right now well just as you were talking Ellen there was something that dropped out of the sky more like a branch you didn't it wasn't like debrief in the building or anything like that but no we're seeing just driving out here we're seeing that the road is we're seeing two three on the road yeah at KCI so but the rain right now the skies are beginning to light and the rain is really decreasing right now so yeah that is good news but I mean so Gary if Brad is seen on this debris coming and it is heading nearer at the airport that's the debris that's coming from the tornado that was west of the airport correct right yeah this is crazy this debris was lifted up into the storm and then it was transported almost nine or ten miles away and then dropped so again this has probably been lifted up tens of thousands of feet into the air then it's buffeted around by a thunderstorm at elevation and then it spits out the debris what could be ten miles down the road so again that's exactly what kind of what kind of storm we're dealing with here and we're getting more and more reports so Brad's near the airport we've gotten reports I've gotten them myself just here direct message from plat city near where Brad's out of the airport now the National Weather Service saying that they're continuing to see debris falling from the sky near Smithville Lake right now so the amount of mile square miles in terms of the debris still in the air from this powerful tornado this evening this is just astounding really hey we have bread Anthony and Riverside right now and Riverside was one area too that was potentially impacted by this tornado Bret where are you and what have you seen in your travels so far and now that you've approached areas that have had some damage hey Gary we've seen debris fall too from the sky it's been mainly leaves and I don't look like a piece of paper that's small small items but certainly debris falling out of the sky the circulation itself should be just north of us as we're on 6:35 the ARCA Sea casino would be back to our back to our southeast Park Hill High School is off they're on the left side of the screen we're looking over Park Hill High School right now and the circulation with the heavy rain coming back again is wrapping or right over top just to the north of us so we haven't seen any kind of damage on 635 north as we and i-70 East and 435 north as we made that trek up to this point but we certainly have seen things falling out of the sky and we've seen this heavy rain we're back into that senator that location again and just an indication remember this is gonna be back in Linden but there's just an indication of already back in Linden in Osage County parts of Lyon County look at the screen there we pick up the wind gust here on the mobile weather center of close to 109 miles an hour so certainly tornadic strength at that point all right so here we are well the live picture is roughly five North let me interrupt you for just one moment before you get back into your coverage I just want to let you know that the tornado warning now has been allowed to expire that rotation within the storm has been lost at least temporarily I'm not telling everybody that it's safe to go outside right now but at the same time there are no longer any tornado warnings in the area which is good and we are gonna stay on the air just given the amount of damage that we have seen from this storm and that we still have debris falling in the air from this tornado so again we're going to continue our coverage again the tornado warning and even the 22 emergency I think we can change that wording now has been allowed to expire but by no means do we want you outside looking and again we just heard from emergency managers in Douglas County and they are telling people do not go outside and look for damage because there see crews are looking for people who need help right now there's live power lines down and damage widespread across areas of Douglas extending potentially into Wyandotte County we're getting reports in your Platte City the airport Smithville of debris still falling and again we are going to continue our coverage as we have now seen damage and we still have debris falling from this tornado warning over the last half-hour Gary well this is where things get really dangerous too because we're getting very very close to sunset right now so it's dark outside you can't see what's going on it's almost like a flooded road so the last thing you want to do and I know that everybody wants to go out and look at a disaster but do not go out looking for storm damage please if you encountered storm damage at your house and if you're in a safe place we'd love to have you send us a picture of your storm damage but please do not go out looking for storm damage from what we heard that the emergency manager Bob in Douglas County told me that are told Erin and I yes okay and now getting reports of debris falling in Clinton County as well okay Casey PNL says 1600 people are without power is that 1600 is that right that number yeah that's what we heard 1600 people without power so quite a few folks are without power tonight because of this the tornado appeared to have weakened by the time it reached Kansas City that that is an amazing thing 435 loop Bonner Springs areas near Eudora certainly and you know still major metropolitan part of our city but yes within the 435 loop we begin to lose that signature the strong signature of tornadic weather but again we're continuing to monitor this storm because of the damage that we've seen and again I believe that's a tower camera now or is that the chopper there towards a you're right Gary I believe that's our camera okay so that's tower camera that you're looking at in your video window this is the storm it was the southern portion of this storm here now that's a severe thunderstorm warning so it seems like we are relaxing but this means that this storm is capable of producing 60 or even 70 mile-an-hour winds so straight-line winds more so than tornadic winds but this same storm is moving into Liberty so Liberty expects strong wind gusts within about the next 10 to 15 minutes and you can see some of the wind here that's a wind signature on the leading edge of this storm as it's pushing over towards Liberty right now so I would expect strong downburst winds perhaps up to about 70 miles per hour that is extremely significant while the winds have changed directions now in Parkville as this storm appeared once it reached close to the parkville area it seemed like it just started to break up in some of its intensity initially going from a just a super wide monster of a tornado it then fractured up into several tornadoes and typically what they'll do is dance around each other and then after that everything just kind of fizzled out that seems to have been what the life cycle was of this tornadic storm as it moved from areas southwest of Lawrence all the way into Kansas City what a huge path this has been hey we have an image of a funnel in western Shawnee let's go ahead and show that that's what you're looking at right there I'm not a hundred percent sure if that is an accurate depiction of that or if that is just an inflow cloud well that looks a little more ominous ominous certainly from that vantage point hey keep in mind though that most of these tornadoes were obscured from heavy heavy Rio that's that's likely the tornado right there again when I looked at that earlier it didn't look like it as much but this picture from Thomas Mitchell certainly showing that so yeah that was your tornado damage definitely in Bonner Springs and you're looking right here at the Providence amphitheater yeah I'm telling you that is that's well that was just one of many signs in fact we heard reports that the signs all along basically k32 were just crumpled up like pieces of paper so again lots of damage out and about in the area but don't think that you need to hop in your car and go check it out it is going to be way too dangerous for that an emergency manager crews now are literally at least across Douglas County and likely across southern Leavenworth and also perhaps portions of Johnson as well are starting to go house to house now to make sure everybody's okay and I think something else to pass along to our viewers now that this storm is continuing to work its way through the immediate Metro I'm seeing more and more folks that are saying my powers going off my powers going off and the way that you can stay connected with us we're continuing to livestream our coverage on our Facebook page at KCTV five so that's one way to stay connected in addition to our weather app that again as we will continue to livestream our coverage here at KCTV five one way to stay connected with our live coverage as we continue to monitor these storms moving through Kansas City again on our Facebook page as we continue to live stirring this information and again we do not want people out looking at damage or trying to find damage but if you have it in your backyards and you can safely send us those videos please do that again direct message me Aaron at KCTV 5 Direct Message our Facebook page at KCTV 5 and we will pass along that information again the tornado warnings have been allowed to expire Gary but we are still not letting our guard down because we're getting more and more reports of damage coming in folks losing power and I think the scary thing that you mentioned now that we're losing daylight some debris that's still floating in the air and still landing on the ground many minutes and hours are how about minutes and miles after the tornado warning has now been allowed to expire and mainly north of the river with that debris still falling in the air for some of us now yeah and that's your plaza city cam that you're looking at in the video window there it's looking off to the north so it's looking from basically the plaza into the downtown area and it still shows some pretty threatening skies but Aaron is advancing this storm track putting the updraft area and actually the area of the storm that may actually be producing some really gusty winds that puts it into Claycomo here in just about six minutes Liberty it looks like it's going to be about two minutes till the top of the hour and then Missouri City about 20 minutes past the hour this storm will continue on to Excelsior Springs in Orrick Missouri up what do we have here Erin let's go ahead and lose this I'm starting to see what perhaps could be a little bit of tightening rotation so let's go ahead and lose the track and then we're gonna get a refill on this looking at this area here again sometimes these things will cycle back again again just don't want anybody to to completely think that you're in in that you're completely safe but this puts it right up at that northeastern Bend on the 435 loop so this is gonna be north of 152 Highway right that's Barry yep this let me move the town of Barry and this is Liberty yeah and then Chandler so just to the east of Nashua right there were 4:35 makes that Bend on the northeast side of town that's where that's that's where I would expect some rotation in the skies let's go ahead and shift the whole map up to the north again okay so that's going to be moving in towards Kearney again there is not a tornado warning on this right now but I'm starting to see some what appears at least in my view of maybe some tightening rotation and again we're kind of a little bit on edge here and the reason we're on edge is because of what we've already dealt with and this is the same storm that's at a history of producing at least one monster tornado that stayed on the ground obviously for a long long time this area of rotation appears to be moving Liberty Kearney would be in the path and so would Excelsior Springs so Kearney in Excelsior Springs would be definitely within the path or at least the potential path of what I think is some tightening rotation on this storm and it certainly has me a little bit on edge here and what is this video that we're looking is that bred Anthony okay Bret is moving through downtown so that's what you're looking at over here I was looking at some of the video and again the clouds are looking pretty threatening it's still at this hour as we still have a little bit of daylight left out into the skies but don't expect much to be left again that looks to be some very very tight rotation here that's just northwest of Liberty can we get a little bit closer to that one area sure can I just want to take a closer look at that absolutely I just reached out to the National Weather Service as well to see if they are watching on this part of the storm as we are here at KCTV five it just looks like it's on the northeast edge of the 435 loop just want to make a hundred percent sure that we're that we're okay here that would be in line to reach over towards Kearney and again so we so Aaron is in direct contact right now with the National Weather Service just to see what they're gonna have to say about this we have a an NWS chat tool that we use so we can speak with a few folks in the Weather Service office directly and they can give us what their perspective is and from their angle what they're looking at right now I haven't heard any word that they're thinking about issuing anything on this it is already a severe thunderstorm warning that that is still in effect so a very dangerous storm nonetheless whether it's tornadic or not but again I just want to keep a very sharp eye on that rotation well and I think something worth noting when we talk about supercell tornadoes and we get that signature knotch we saw the very clear indication of a potential tornado earlier this evening over Douglas County extending through your door and Bonner Springs we can also certainly get tornadoes along the leading edge of these strong straight-line winds so that's why we're closely monitoring the north side so now just moving north in east of the 435 loop so this is going to potentially move right over the i-35 corridor as we are moving through the next five to ten minutes again this storm is not under a tornado warning right now but it is an area that we are closely monitoring as we are continuing to get minute-by-minute new information coming in so again this is going to be northa and they just issued the tornado warning gary yep there it is our new tornado warning in effect for Clay County this is going to be moving east at 35 miles an hour again Clay County the sirens now going off seek shelter if you live over areas of Clay County the sirens going off alright well here we are again and you're watching that with us as we were both together watching this begin to tighten back up again Aaron little also noticing that this was starting to tighten back up again and potentially becoming another tornadic storm and it now is I'm gonna move this out just so we can put a storm track on this and get you know quite a few city names here so hold on tight yeah Kearny Excelsior Springs the cities that we were mentioning before are in the path of this storm and then this is moving due east at about 35 miles an hour so we're gonna move this here right I would be really and go a little northeast right yes this is this is passing by to the north of Liberty so definitely to the north I'm telling you what Kearny is in a direct path here especially if you live anywhere south on the south edge of Kearny but it looks like it's going to be right at the top of the hour you've got 9 minutes in Kearny so you need to be hit in the basement immediately and old what ready we've heard a couple of stories and reports there was a couple in Douglas County that went into the basement and their entire house was gone so when they came back out they had no house to go to most be at about 10 after the hour Excelsior Springs ok we're gonna show you video now of a tornado this is Kate - oh my gosh look at the size of that this was caught on camera at k10 and 59th Street oh my word look how massive that's that's actually the same one that was near Linwood that's the one that Emily Rickman was right in the direct path of it had us all in the studio and in a complete panic because she was right in front of it it was bearing down on her so with yeah this is Kate 10 and 59 that we are looking at Jackie grown veld and I'm I'm sorry if I butchered your name Jackie but wonderful video Jackie and looks like you are on your car you're doing the right thing you were driving adjacent to the storm to get out of its path everything was done just right here and Gary we are getting reports with this storm that we are watching right now again tornado warning in effect for areas of Clay County reports of debris and damage from Smithville so where that storm moved through just over the last half hour reports a building material roofing material siding material insulation large areas I believe they're missing a word here but large trees a foot in diameter because of this storm that just moved over Smithville again now new tornado warning in effect for areas of Clay County Missouri this is just north of Liberty right over the i-35 so this is going to go right oh it's going right over the interstate right now right over the interstate I'm going to push forward our storm track yeah let's go ahead and tighten up the storm track if we could a little bit to is I really want to get the the people in Kearney into shelter right now if we could let's narrow it right yeah let's do it right about here this is where the rotation is we'll kind of get you down a little bit more to the mile of where this is happening this is a 35 here Brett has circulation right is that what we're looking at in the video all right hey Brett give us your vantage point what you can see sometimes looking out the windshield you can see things a little more clearly than we can in the studio you said you have rotation have you seen any forms or any funnels forming or anything no funnels yet Gary but we're right over i-35 northbound in that area of circulation that is showing up on on Doppler radar so we're not seeing I don't see anything close but I'm sure if there's some rotation and it's it's strong enough that's why the tornado warning has been issued that we're going to lose some of this in the trees right now we're keeping an eye on it almost right underneath it so yeah let's we had a really let's don't lose that video don't don't lose Bret's video let's stay on it do you see any mile markers Brett since this is going to move right over the interstate mile marker is where you're at yeah mile marker ten on i-35 okay so you're in Liberty now we've just met by there yeah okay all right we'll stay on it stay on it as soon as we lose these trees here we should get a much better picture of of that storm bread Anthony again and here I'll kind of locate on the map bread Anthony is on i-35 basically right down here he's travelling up the road the tornado is right here on just just about to hit I 35 right now it's just barely on the west side of the road it's actually right in between Liberty and Kearney at this hour but Carney's in the direct path of this and this storm will likely pass by and it looks like it well it may have lost a little bit of its rotation at least it's tightening I may broaden just a bit it's not quite as strong as it was indicating just a second to go but it's moving straight into the Carney vicinity you need to be down into your basement in Kearney Missouri right now this storm very dangerous and then there's the picture of it right over my shoulder here so watch that and then watch that color-code difference that you see on the Doppler radar so you can kind of track this yourself Erin if we can let's take that hold map and then kind of slide it to the South a little bit so we can put Kearney a little bit more squarely in the center Kearney is Carney's the one community right now that I'm really concerned with with this with this potential tornado warning and let's go ahead and lose the track on it all together we want to see what this whole structure looks like and then now we'll storm velocity storm relative velocity that little knots there by Kearney make it a little bit bigger or slide it to the north okay and I'm hearing from our producer that Betsy Webster is in place near Kearney and so we're just getting her in a safe place first for most but we're gonna get her reports just as safely as we can here over the next few minutes okay well this is it right in here that's your tornado warning that's gonna be moving into areas very very close to cart all of Kearney needs to be below below ground right now this tornado is gonna pass right over i-35 and right over my other shoulder that's the storm track five mobile Weather Center in it's on i-35 it's just to the south of Kearney and it is traveling to the north so again watch the Doppler radar screen on your right this storm is now oh this is now moving right into Kearney and it does appear as though that let's get street level we have noise pan it out yeah we have all these streets labeled and marked for you in Kearney go ahead and read off a few of those streets if you can Erin okay so we are looking right now so it's gonna be right where we're seeing this notching so to give you a little bit of your bearing here so four areas right along i-35 so this is going to be intersecting I'm very close to one hundred and forty fourth Street this also continues for areas of nation Road Watson Road continuing through areas of Regency Drive as we're continuing to monitor again the latest on the leading edge of this thunderstorm here on this complex that has now given us a little bit of circulation so again if we want to be very precise here street level and you correct me if I'm wrong Gary if you're looking at a different place than I am but again very close to i-35 so this is going to be near 144 Street and nation Road where we can potentially see em again that tornado a new tornado warning tornado on the ground but I'm going to move this even though we I'm going to get rid of our velocity here and I'm just going to move our map just to give you some additional streets here for areas of 19th Street for South Brook Parkway for areas of Regency Drive for a prospect south prospect for Clear Creek Road all under this tornado warning for areas within this neighborhood here I'm gonna go all the way down to street level here with some of these streets as we're continuing to get this new information so Watson West 19th Street you just saw that bullseye of red pop-up so I want to span this out now Gary and I'll put the velocity back on this yeah there's that couplet right there right there just to the south of Kearney it looks like it's moving directly towards Excelsior Springs so what you're looking at is right here where those two highlighted colors kind of go together so this is on the south side of Kearney right now just passed right over i-35 now it appears to be more on the east side of I 35 and with this path that would push it by on the north side of Excelsior Springs Excelsior Springs just about 11 to 12 miles up the road from where the tornado maybe not even that maybe only nine miles up the road from where that tornado is as a crow flies so Excelsior Springs you need to be on the lookout to that tornado sirens may be going off in Excelsior Springs not a hundred percent sure of that but if they are this is a very dangerous storm and you need to be seeking shelter and again the National Weather Service just over the last two minutes Gary saying that storm spotters are reporting a funnel cloud near Carney on that funnel cloud where was I was reported right over areas near highway 92 the funnel has since dissipated but the wall cloud is remaining so to help clarify what that means scientifically a wall cloud is basically the lowering of that thunderstorm and when we begin to see those winds turning in different directions that's when we have the potential of seeing the funnel and once the funnel reaches the ground that's when we have the confirmed areas of tornadic activity but again latest reports coming in this is radar indicated we have seen a funnel cloud we have seen a wall cloud with this thunderstorm and this storm has had a history of producing damage beginning over areas of Douglas County near Lawrence extending through areas now north and east of Kansas City we want to go to Betsy Webster she is where this storm is right now Betsy first and foremost are you safe and what is your location absolutely in fact specifically our location is we are in what if to be a stockroom at Kwik Trip you can see some of the employees with their Kwik Trip uniforms on this is what they have designated as their safe room we are in Kearney at I 35 and 92 highway we were just getting out of our vehicle we thought we were just a little bit of a ways away from the storm that we would be able to shoot it a woman came to the door she said do you guys want to come into our safe room I'm about to lock the doors well just about then is when we heard some thunder and a crack of lightning that felt like it was super close to us the sirens were going off and we decided to do what we thought was safest and rather than stay outside to try to get some really impressive images of lightning we decided to come in here to the safe room so I think what we're gonna try to do is put kctv5 simulcast on our app on here in the stock room so some of these folks can find out what's going on a lot of people have been asking questions hey what do you know so and Gary they are gonna extend the tornado warning here we go okay there's tornado warning yep clay and Ray well that definitely makes sense if we can take that storm relative velocity scope Aaron and shift that back to the north a little bit again highway 92 and i-35 it's the quick trip that's located there that's where Betsy is right now inside the stock room and you can see all the other employees were in there as well that's exactly it's exactly the precise location of where the funnel cloud was sited and visually spotted it does appear though is that is now all to the east of i-35 at this hour so it has crossed the interstate it is moving directly in line to areas around Excelsior Springs Excelsior Springs you may catch a wind gust prior to this happening it's moving basically to the east northeast at about 33 to 34 miles per hour Aaron's putting a pretty wide storm track on this and this is the safest way to do it so we can put a timeout for everybody who's in the potential path of this it's one reason why this polygon is this wide even though the tornado is only about that wide now as it begins to shift over towards the Mosby area it's almost there right now Excelsior Springs you've got ten minutes actually you've got nine minutes before it arrives in city looks like it's going to be especially dangerous on the north side of Excelsior Springs that would put it north of the Elms resort area but again it looks like it's going to be a more on the north side that doesn't mean if you live in the south side by that barbecue joint that's down there that you're in a safe location you need to be below ground and in your shelter as soon as you can be it'll be in Dockery then about 37 after and Rayville just 1 minute after that so a dangerous dangerous situation outside and is that bread Anthony's video that we have over in the video box right now I believe so because it's it's moving and it's it's it's got some motion on it and that is a lowering that he's looking at over there I don't see that that is an actual funnel do we have bread on the line I'd like to get his vantage point from that see if he has seen anything that looked like a funnel or anything that may be spinning from that lowering okay Brenda Gary we know I haven't yes don't not seen anything from that look go ahead all right just just going to ask you what you're seeing it appears as though this storm is now in between Carney and Excelsior Springs it looks like you're still on the interstate were you gonna take one of the exits there and try to follow up on this yeah we're trying to go east here at the next exit would that we can get on there's an outer road right there we'll try to head east toward Excelsior Springs as soon as we can yeah I have a feeling in it it looks like this storm wants to push by just to the north of Excelsior Springs but not by much I mean only only a mile or two north of Excelsior Springs if I was going to put an absolute you know just just put a hairline track on this thing but it does look like the strongest rotation is and boy is that ever a tight rotation now we're starting to get some signatures pretty close to what we had earlier today tornado warning has been extended Aaron little was telling us about that and this is now about three and a half to four miles east southeast of Kearney and it's moving directly towards the Excelsior Springs area and I tell you what Bret I don't know what you're seeing on your radar in your yours but storm crack five live power Doppler radar right now showing some absolute tightening of this rotation by Kearney that's Brett Anthony and we're gonna go ahead and continue with his pictures he is locked in on this storm and he has been ever since this storm was southwest of Lawrence and from your vantage point to Aaron what are you seeing with that rotation well I know you're watching that storm I don't know if we can take 3d - because I just pulled back the radar just to see what might be coming down the road next again tornado warning in effect for areas of Clay County but we have multiple other thunderstorms that are now tornadic out to the west over central portions of Kansas as well so even though the immediate metropolitan area the 435 loop again the storms have passed for the short term my heart just dropped Gary looking out to the west and let me move the radar here just to give folks a better at vantage point again tornado warning continuing for areas of Clay County but look at these storms lined up over central portions of Kansas and again we have a tornado watch in effect until 10 o'clock tonight we may be a very long long night as we continue to monitor these storms out to the West for this evening again let me zoom this in the latest coming in to the Weather Center here at KCTV 5 this is the same storm war brought Anthony also we're Betsy Webster they're both located right over this thunderstorm complex that we have seen some strengthening in terms of the potential rotation with this storm here yep Springs right there it is there it is oh my gosh that is some really really tight intubation signatures now being reported through the Weather Service of debris signatures from this storm moving its way just off to the east of Kearney well then without question that one is on the ground at that moment so it is officially a tornado east-southeast of Kearney now it appears to be about five or six miles it's basically split the difference between Carney and Excelsior Springs so Bret Anthony now will be turning to the east off karni heading towards Excelsior Springs he's gonna ride right up the backside of this and this looks like it potentially could be a pretty strong tornado too and once you start to get debris signatures down in the ground you know that it is potentially dead and very very dangerous storm yeah well we're getting some wind speeds now that are in excess of a hundred miles per hour associated with that so again this is a very dangerous storm that could be over a hundred and twenty this storm that we saw about an hour and a half ago over areas near Eudora and Bonner Springs we were seeing and that light blue shading in terms of our velocity and the brighter the white is in between these two colors of green and red the stronger potentially the shear is or the stronger signature of a tornado yeah well that's it right there easy to pinpoint almost due east out of Kearney by no more than about three miles or so that's your velocity scope and this is the tornado right here again it doesn't look like because this has all the roads on it it appears to be in a wide open area that is not really heavily populated again producing winds of over 120 miles per hour as this storm is moving to the east Crescent Lake looks like this will pass by just to your north which is a great but not by any more than just a mile or two storm spotters now I'm seeing that they are reporting that they are seeing the tornado on the ground with this storm so we have visuals on the ground from this system as well yeah I thought that would not surprise me at all if there are storm spotters down there seeing this thing that that rotation looks to be very very strong and again it's out it is on the ground let's expand this out I want to see where Excelsior Springs is here okay right here Excelsior Springs so this will pass by basically Excelsior estates and Excelsior Springs going to kind of split the difference right in there and it actually it may end up clipping southern portions of Excelsior States as that storm is moving to the east northeast and you only have about six minutes to go below ground Excel oh gosh Excelsior Springs Hospital looks to be in direct line of this the weather service has just reshaped the polygon again Stream Li dangerous tornado I'm located near Excelsior Springs the storm is moving east at 35 miles an hour again extremely dangerous tornado potentially on the ground yeah here's the hospital the hospital is about to get a hit right now I mean within two minutes it'll be in at the hospital so again everybody I'm sure is below ground there and then what you do with the patients there to whatever the procedures happen to be typically now patients are being moved out of their rooms and then down into tornado shelter areas it's an evacuation process that has changed ever since the Joplin tornado when that hospital was hit crystal lakes arrival at about 824 Union Church at about 8:30 9:00 and then st. Paul Chapel at about 906 pier to be all of the structures and the populated areas that are in line of this very very dangerous storm but again Excelsior Springs right about here already feeling the outflow winds from that storm just on the north side up by the hospital is where this tornado is going right now and again it will be at the hospital in about two minutes it's probably getting there right about now and I'm sure you're feeling the effects of this in that location this is Lawson so this passes by just to the south of Lawson but if you live anywhere between Lawson and the Excelsior Springs Hospital and you would know that if that's if that's basically your territory then this tornado is heading your way another very well defined signature on this with the inn inbound and outbound winds you're looking at tower camera pointing off to the northeast at part of that storm that's in that picture right there hey if we can get bread Anthony's picture up too he should be piggybacking this thing right about now oh it's frozen okay well you know you know I don't want to say what's happening here but if he is between Carney and Excelsior Springs it's possible that maybe some of the cell towers have been impacted that's how a signal is getting back here but a signal is frozen so you know there could be some damage along that roadway and with the debris signatures that's been coming up on the Doppler radar screen that Aaron was talking about before I certainly think that could be the case you want to switch to to 3d I've got a city street level mapping here behind you right where we have this potential tornado on the ground this is it this is old Quarry Road right over here and we're getting it right down to where that tornado is located right now and this would be in Excelsior Springs and basically going by to the north side of the Excelsior Springs areas so this is going to to pass by to the north of the Elms it's going to be going very very close to where the hospital is located there's Kearny Road 136 Terrace Wornall Road Jesse James Road just a few of these roads that are going to be in line Lin Road heading north out of town so I'd say right now old quarry is getting hit pretty good on the north end of Excelsior Springs and then this is getting all the way down in basically into those northern neighborhoods in Excelsior Springs and this is a very dangerous tornado again all right let me zoom this out again Gary and we'll do a flush storm track for folks as we're continuing to keep a close eye on this storm again at the National Weather Service saying that an Excelsior Springs right over the hospital just as we have said that they should be in their safe shelter look at that Gary hard to see on the radar yeah that is that's amazing so it does appear as though it's going to be that couplet right there so yeah if you go back to storm well we'll lose the scope and then we'll go back to the base reflectivity mode because this pretty one pretty easy one to see to that it's moving right in here and again this is also an indicator that this thing is absolutely locked inside the rain this is not a usual thing this is incredibly unusual to see tornadoes that are completely buried in the center of the rain shaft so again they're absolutely camouflaged but this is easily showing you where that tornado is located brand-new tornado warning has just been issued and re extended and redrawn National Weather Service out of Pleasant Hill is all over this storm doing a wonderful job of repositioning these tornado warnings and those polygons they really keep it as tight as they can to let everybody know so basically what's happening here is if you hear the tornado sirens going off then you're within reach of this tornado so if you can hear the sirens outside it's time to hit your shelter and I mean like immediately so Aaron hasn't right in the center of the tornado right now Excelsior Springs hospital it's essentially right there Excelsior Estates at 8:23 Union Church at 8:41 and Crenshaw school looks like it arrives about four minutes till the top of the hour so you're a little bit upstream from this storm but a very very dangerous storm nonetheless as it's cycled back again for a while we lost the tornado warning then all of a sudden this storm decided to recycle again and here we have another tornado on the ground area and that's what we were worried about that's why we said even though it looks like this storm north side of the 435 loop an hour ago is losing a little bit of its characteristics in terms of tornadic weather when you talk about recycling that means it's basically just gaining its energy again and now again the National Weather Service saying this is an extremely dangerous tornado moving its way right over areas of Excelsior estates and Excelsior Springs over the next few minutes yeah it's right over the hospital right now so I know Brett Anthony's on the way and we kind of lost signal with him between Carney and Excelsior Springs but if you could have him on his way if he could swing by the hospital I just want to make sure that that building is okay again this is going to be moving well to the east around Union Church and then once you get to the east and northeast of Excelsior Springs sometimes it gets to be a little bit more difficult the roads get a little bit windy out there it's wonderful territory if you're out on a motorcycle looking for a twisty road but if you're out covering storms and you're not a hundred percent used to the roads and the area it can be a little unnerving as you tried to follow a storm and then your road just suddenly takes you off in a different direction let's go and lose the track on this I'd like to put the that that's the stadium camera that you're looking at right now pointing off to the northeast just had some pretty threatening clouds still lingering in the metro area let's put that velocity-- scope back on that Excelsior Estates storm and it looks like it's going to be just to the south of Excelsior's estates yep right there it is that's your tornado right there south of Excelsior States but it's Excelsior States I mean it's so close it's literally just hundreds of yards to the south of the Excelsior Estates area if you lived on the southern edge of what you would call excelsior estates then you are in a direct line for this tornado to hit and again sirens going off it's picking up debris signatures looks like Excelsior estates may catch a direct hit with this I do believe don't you think that's weakened just a little bit Aaron over the last couple of scans yes it certainly has remember here all you will look at the velocity here so remember just about ten minutes ago we saw numbers in the 50s right it's down to 44 this still puts it at over a hundred miles an hour of gate to gate shear right there so that is still a tornado without question that is still a tornado but it does appear as though the tornado is weakened a little bit but it's moving directly into Excelsior estates and that is not a good sign whatsoever it's going to go into a populated area a lot of houses there and there could be some damage as a result of that so again protect yourself first obviously before you even worry about your property but Excelsior states is next in line to see this Excelsior Springs right here again it said that's a very populated there just a beautiful town it looks like this tornado is passing by just to the north of Excelsior Springs but not by anything more than about four miles or so and what is this picture that we have is that chopper 5 or is that our tower that's our tower camera looking off to the northeast okay yeah I can still see some shredded up Scud clouds that you can see from that Anna's point there as well looks like our cameras beginning to shift to the east just a little bit again you're not looking at a tornado or anything that's even resembling that that is just Scud clouds but again just just to let you know that there's still plenty of updraft left and all right the weather service is certainly echoing exactly what you're saying they said they're saying that they're not seeing one tight rotation but now they may have two areas potentially where they may have tornadoes on the ground again one near Excelsior estates and another one just west of Excelsior estate so let me reread that again possibly two tornadoes over areas near Excelsior estate so right where we're watching that's what The Weather Service both of those yeah you've got them on either side of town right now there's one on the east side of Excelsior estates and then there's one here to the southwest so again this is a very very dangerous situation both of which are basically right inside of this heavy raining precipitation area but this is what The Weather Service is talking about they're talking about this one right here that's just east-northeast of Excelsior States then you have another one that's just to the south southwest of Excelsior States that's two tornadoes they're no more than about a mile apart from each other typically what sometimes happens and if these tornadoes get any closer to each other they'll start to spin around each other and then if they do converge then that turns into a big massive tornado sometimes but yeah Aaron's pointing out both of the tornado locations for you let me change the color so it's easier for people to read hold on here but the two arrows that you're looking at are going to be pointing right at the two tornadoes that are right now near Excelsior estates and Excelsior Springs so these are all north of Excelsior Springs on either side bookending Excelsior Estates nor more than a mile out of town to the northeast and then also one just to the southwest too on the ground right now there's pretty amazing yeah there you go Aaron has them in yellow pointing out the two tornadoes surrounding Excelsior States just to the north of except that's got a fresh sweep so let me move these arrows so this one stays yes this one would go up too just a little bit if you agree Gary yeah I do agree with that actually expand that out a little bit more if we can just the whole picture yeah that's a more broadened area of rotation that's being picked up right now and then that's a much much tighter so again this area of rotation yeah I'm kind of losing a tornadic signature still have a very vivid tornadic signature though on the one that's just southwest of Excelsior States so this one moved through Excelsior Estates and then this one is kind of piggybacking it so this could be kind of a double whammy to tornadoes hitting one town at the same time at least potentially as the first tornado now appears that as though it's moving a little bit farther away off to the northeast let's go ahead and see what's in the line of that one - it's going to be to the north of Vivat Vivat so if you take the highway north out of Excelsior Springs and and VIP and vivid and you travel north on that that's exactly where that first tornado is located so homestead you've got a tornado about four miles north of town Excelsior Estates you've got another tornado right now that's about to hit your town as well I'm going to zoom this out just a little bit to do a fresh storm track and right now it's right along the county line let's do one let's do the South for Excelsior estates here as this is lifting off towards the east let me see here the latest coming in is moving east at 25 miles an hour so that's gonna put it in this direction for the south edge right so it's will be in vivid at about 8:30 one but it doesn't look like it may pass by just up just a little bit north of vivid and then Hallsville hour Tate's ville rather I'm sorry Tate's Gilad about two minutes past I haven't been to Tate's ville gorge ville then at about 9:10 and let me move this up Gary so I'm going to take that storm track so it's they're both moving at the same speed and then let me go to our storm track here yeah I'm losing it here a little bit there's still that's the only one I see I think that first ones gone okay that one nor the one northeast of Excelsior states if you hear the sirens going off don't do anything just stay where you are but I'm losing a little bit of rotation hopefully that might put your mind at ease so north of Vivid right now that tornado anyway and we are getting reports from storm spotters that we may have debris now falling from the sky in Excelsior estates okay well that would make sense then although if you're in Excelsior estates I don't know why you can see debris you shouldn't be outside and we have Kelly Taylor right now who's on our way to Excelsior Springs talking to us right now Kelly where are you and what have you seen so far we'll probably about 12 miles outside early the visibility is very low the rain is coming down very very hard right here and it's just such dark probably so here my phone is actually going off right now emergency alert or flash so we've seen people pull over to the side of the road as we're driving we kind of wait it out here's another car right here if you can see right here on the right side of us or just pulled over stop trying to wait it out so like I said we are headed into Excelsior Springs and won't take my damn lips doing this but you know what that big flash of light and you just thought it'll let you know what else hey Kelly be extremely careful just north of Excelsior Springs near Excelsior estates we've had tornadoes being reported there and also some debris signatures as well it just keep in mind on your travels especially now that you're traveling very close to dark just be on the lookout for power lines or any debris that might be in the roadway I know it's it III know that you want to get to a location to cover a story but you really need to be safe so please keep a very very sharp eye on the roads and if you do see debris make sure that it's not power lines across the road that you see them obviously don't cross them we'll make sure to be safe if you're cutting out a little bit yeah we've got you Kelly again Kelly Taylor is heading over towards Excelsior Springs to check out what could be damage just on the north end of Excelsior Springs and up towards Excelsior estates Erin what are you seeing right now on on the radar I'm just gonna put a fresh storm track again keep in mind we have seen two different areas of rotation over the last half hour I'm just gonna broad brush both of them in that leading edge as this is moving its way off to the east at about 30 miles an hour so again the latest cities in the path continuing for areas of Excelsior Springs 840 Rayville this storm will be moving and continuing through areas near Millville about 8:50 where Erin we have bred Anthony right now in Excelsior Estates he's right there Brett tell us what where you are right now what you see and we heard that there was debris falling from the skies have you seen any of that oh yeah it's falling on the mobile weather center as we were driving north on on highway 69 I'm pretty sure we were in a small tornado a few minutes ago when our signal wasn't up at the time but yeah winds was switched different directions and gusts it real strong and and then of course we were working to try to get the mobile weather center reset but anyway so there continues to be just like small leaves and twigs and things falling from the sky even now as we head up to the north if you look carefully you might be able to see some just falling so yeah there was something that passed right through this area I've seen a couple of power poles knocked over and a couple of trees uprooted right along highway 92 and now we're on 69 headed to the north a little bit and we're continuing to see things falling out of the sky Gary so again intense rain so if it's in there it's probably rain wrap once again okay well Bret I doubt if it's there any longer we lost our rotation signature on storm track 5 live power Doppler radar and Erin little has news from the National Weather Service what's the lady they have allowed the tornado warning to expire for areas of Clay and Rhea County so again they've had the same analysis that we have here at kctv5 that we've lost that signature for the potential of tornadic weather now that does not mean that it's safe to be outside over areas of Clay and Rhea County you can continue to see Brett's live picture there on the right hand side of your screen and he has reported it along with multiple storm spotters that we have debris falling in the air from this storm so even though the sirens may have gone off we do not want you to go outside we want you to stay in a safe place until this storm completely passes and I think that's some important information to pass along to all of our viewing area we've had emergency managers report from these storms all evening long that we really don't need people out looking for damage at this point we just need emergency managers to be able to do their job and help those who are dealing with damage in terms of structures and rooms and homes we've seen a lot of that here over the evening hours tonight now what I want to do here Gary I know you and I have been talking about this and kind of taking a look out to the West so again all of the tornado warnings have been allowed to expire for the moment the tornado watch continues I'm going to lose the scope here too and let me zoom this out again that warning and that's just hasn't updated quite yet with our system began as of 8:20 for the National Weather Service has allowed that tornado warning to expire I want to zoom this out just to show you these storms out to the West and we do have multiple storms and you can see over central portions of Kansas red boxes here as well with additional thunderstorm development and we do have tornado warned storms out to the west over central Kansas as well I can put on the latest update in terms of the watch box that we have for our area just to make sure that everyone is aware even though the storms may have stopped for the time being here over downtown Kansas City in terms of the tornadic threat for the short term we are still under this 22 watch and let me just highlight this watch for you now because we have I believe it's over two and a half yeah two and a half 2.6 million within our viewing area that we're going to continue to keep a very close eye on any thunderstorm and that develops across our area as we're moving through the rest of this evening as we are monitoring the threat for tornado Cuellar not just here for the short term but continuing across our area potentially until 10 o'clock tonight and we are monitoring here in the studio but we've also had multiple crews I would say we had five crews in the field on the ground in addition to that news chopper five in the air monitoring these storms as well and I think the thing that's concerning we're going to lose the daylight very quickly now at this point so any tornado warnings that we do have that are new that are issued here over the next couple of hours we will not have visibility of daylight to be able to see those storms once we get past what time is it now Gary it's about 8:25 so we'd have what another half hour to 45 minutes before we completely go dark in terms of our visibility across the area as we are moving through this evening again continuing to keep an eye on the newest information coming in and they are saying that there is debris that's continuing to a fly metal debris flying in the air over areas within some of these warned storms over the last half hour and that is why we do not want you out if you are not an emergency official we do not want you out looking for damage looking to see where some of these tornadoes may have hit this evening because we are continuing to see debris falling in the air we've heard from emergency managers especially when we talked to Bob Newton here just a short while ago over Douglas County he said we have live wires on the ground we have a lot of people that have the potential of having additional injuries because of all the damage that we have on the ground our producer just saying no injuries Dennis can you tell me again what you said where that is no injuries Clay County so Clay County Sheriff saying some good news here Gary no injuries being reported over areas of Clay County Missouri so that's some good news with this storm as we are gonna continue to monitor the very latest coming in to the Weather Center here for this evening let me well I gotta tell you Aaron while you readjust that it's just amazing because we haven't heard of any injuries out of Douglas County either although it's still early the process there they're still going home to home to see if they can find people but we have Ellen McNamara now who's already getting reports of damage in the area and Ellen from what I've seen at least from the the preview you gave me it's pretty impressive yeah this is really impressive video that we got in from Linwood Kansas so this is in Leavenworth County but basically right on the on the county line right Leavenworth and Douglas County is what we're talking about here so this is full just watch the video here just east of Lawrence and this is going to be on 32 I believe just watch here you can see that the fences are ruined the trees they're toppled they're snapped in half like they're bare right exactly they're bare and again this is just this massive power lines damaged from the tornado here so then this person this driver is going to go from that side of the highway that's under the roadway to the other side and then you'll just kind of wait they're gonna come up here you'll see see the trees there they are once again bear snapped in half and then they'll kind of pull off a little bit and then you'll see more damage I mean this is just just incredible video here that you're seeing and again just in from Lynnwood Kansas here oh my gosh they're just watch and then once again they're gonna kind of pull off follow them here follow them as they pull off to the right you can see it looks like a barn survived but then look look at the buildings here on the right oh those buildings not leveled so it's crazy that barn survived but then across the road it did not oh look at that but just look at all that damage and we know that chopper is heading there right now so that home survived you know okay and here is chopper chopper five right now so chocolate 5 is in route to Lynwood I have an app on my phone and I'm going to see exactly where that chopper is at this point but you can see the damage here too all right so there's chop or we're gonna find make sure we know exactly where that is near Bonner Springs near the amphitheater at Bonner Springs we'd heard that the amphitheater near Bonner Springs had taken a basically a direct hit so we're gonna have chopper 5 go out to Bonner Springs 2 to double check that now y'all had talked to about the liveWires and so if you come back to me just whenever you can if not that's fine Westar Energy tweeted out this photo here near Lawrence and you can see that the power lines the power lines are down right here again so this is kind of near the Linwood area and you'll see that the power lines are down trees are covering roadways and we've also gotten a report that 32 is closed in the Linwood area because of situations like this so you'll be able to see here that the power lines are just down here across the road there's trees Westar Energy is aware so that means that a lot of people thousands of people are without power we're looking on numbers right now just to let you know but we have heard of KC PNL adages and also Westar outages as well so those are something that things that were continuing to follow and Aaron had mentioned Clay County back to Clay County where obviously you guys are watching right now and heard no injuries so that's good all right we want to go to Amy Anderson now Amy we just saw some video from the Linwood area it is awful on the ground what are you seeing from your vantage point you just got there Ellen we just pulled up and I'm actually having some really bad problems with a cell service out here I just want to show you what's out here there are two homes right here that have been absolutely destroyed like I said we just pulled up you can see the roofs are gone there are cars that are crushed this is a really beautiful neighborhood with in each home has lots of acreage around it so the homes are really spread out and so a little further up the road the homes are completely untouched and yet you come down here and this area through here was hit really very hard the trees are down there are power lines down these homes are just destroyed they are having some problems out here because so many people are trying to get in here and see what it looks like and the traffic is backed up and they're trying to get emergency equipment through there trying to get the power company through and they're having problems there's a huge traffic backup getting into Linwood I would say if anyone is considering coming out this direction tonight just to look and see the damage and the damage is just absolutely horrific I would advise people if you don't have to don't come out this way because they really are trying to get crews through here to help these people they have very little daylight left as you can admit I can't even imagine what these people are going through right now I'm fighting the daylight but there's terrible destruction in this area like I said we just got here on scene we haven't talked to anyone yet we haven't really had much of a chance to look around but we wanted to get on the air right away and show you just how bad this damage is from the ground clearly a tornado came through here tonight guys back to you yeah it certainly did and Amy now we are looking at chopper 5 thank you so much we're gonna keep you there on the ground and you'll keep gathering some more information from for us thank you so much you're looking live right now at chopper 5 it is in the Lynwood area so you're getting a bird's-eye view of the damage you can see that homes have been leveled right there that one you can see kind of with the RV there another home leveled and as Amy was talking about you know these are beautiful homes a beautiful neighborhood with some acreage lovely property and these homes have just been destroyed we're getting some new information now and this is just heartbreaking here in Lawrence so we have learned that there are confirmed injuries at Lawrence Memorial Hospital we do not know how many people have been hurt at the hospital we know that the hospital is located on Main Street 325 Main Street in Lawrence just west of the park if you're familiar with the area but again we have learned that there are multiple injuries at Lawrence Memorial Hospital because of this tornado so trying to get some more information as to who might have been injured that's something that we're going to keep working on right now but right now if you're just joining us you are looking live at chopper 5 video the Lynwood Kansas area of the tornado damage and it is extensive at one point we believe that this tornado was about a mile wide it was a massive massive storm and you can see firsthand the damage that you are looking at just as we are looking at it right now and Amy obviously on the ground who's going to continue to to gather some more information Gary I mean we expected this because of the tornado that we saw that you guys saw and you tracked it throughout this area but and now knowing that people have been injured at the hospital that that's just the worst news that that that we could report at this particular time yeah really is it's heartbreaking but at the same time with a tornado as strong as it was you know it's to be expected when I heard the story about somebody who went into their basement in Douglas County and then the tornado hit and then their house was gone I mean if they were not in a basement they would have been swept away with that with the house just as it was and you can see some of these are big beautiful houses very well put together but when tornadoes come through they have a way of dismantling things in just a very cruel way and that's exactly what this tornado did that was near Linwood chopper five over the top of that that hopefully that was an outbuilding looks like most of the house at least one house was okay if that was an outbuilding oh my and that almost looks like a you know like a yard with a bunch of cars and trucks and and you know I mean I'm not sure if that was a business or not but you can certainly see I mean there was a looks like a big rig there the top of that was was ruined some of these things have just been kind of as we we say they're tossed around like toys but they literally are tossed around like toys in this tornado and the trees there once again snapped in half just shredded and shredded shred two pieces o mine some look at the tall trees that are laying down at the same time just absolutely knocked over and there are some ambulances in the area some of the emergency management crews are checking in with folks who are just kind of at a loss for words right now and as you would be looking at your home that damaged path there looked to be at least a quarter mile wide we did hear some unofficial reports that this could have been as wide as a mile wide it was every bit a quarter mile wide at least in that one particular location you get over 400 yards wide it's a massive tornado that does that and as long as this was on the ground as long as it was producing that tornadic signature on Doppler radar once I saw that and saw how long it lasted I it really kind of made my heart sink knowing that there were going to be a lot of people impacted by this and you know this this this is a huge impact on what's going to end up being a huge area this story is going to continue all night long in fact it'll likely continue for the rest of the week as stories continue to come out of this right now we're just starting to sift through the fresh rubble yet of the of the damage this tornado just hit a couple hours ago and already as ellen was saying there are reports of people in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital injured I think farther up the line we may find even more you see a house that's damaged like this it's hard to believe that when the roof is gone that may be somebody inside wasn't hurt at least in some way but Ellen these are just devastating pictures yeah they certainly are and and we're starting to get some more photos from the person that sent us that video in the ground video and from Lynnwood and it just shows kind of the magnitude of the situation it looks like so that house you can see the roof just ripped off there and once again the trees and it's interesting I mean you can see here where some of the trees you can see the path of that tornado and and and exactly where it went because you see trees that have not been touched and they're lush and they're beautiful and then just the path of it and it's just it's just massive so 32 in the Linwood area is shut down right now we're getting reports of that and actually took Amy a while to get to that location because she was stuck in traffic and a lot of power lines are down roads are closed because those power lines are are down so you just really need to be careful and I think that's an important thing to pass along we've heard from emergency managers that if you are not one of the folks that are dealing with damage in your neighborhoods we do they have advised do not go out looking for damage because emergency and management you can see emergency officials trying to help all of these people right now who desperately need the help after these tornadoes have moved through so if you're there just looking to see for damage you're gonna be in their way including their efforts to try to help folks for oh my gosh what is trying to figure is that a business yeah I don't know gee producers if you guys know let us know or it looks like we can get some street names if if Greg can give us street names from the chopper overhead let me check with chopper because I mean this just looks I don't know if it's a business or a and it looks like some sort of tarped off ya area you know I wonder if that's a large green house yeah so he's just chopped ours just south of golden road and so that's just south of 32 and 32 as we've reported is very difficult to drive on right now choppers just south of golden road kind of zooming in on all these properties that are around 32 okay if that if that helps you golden road just to the west of Main Street and just to the east of 206 Street is where chopper is so that's Lynwood and just to the east of 206 trees just okay so I can see where he's at now so that's right over areas yeah so this is going to be the west side of Lynwood so 206 Street and golden that is going to be the west side of Lynwood right over areas of K 32 and so the the business that we think it is it's a nursery we believe it was a nursery that was just destroyed look and wholesale floor is what we believe what you were just looking at wholesale florists okay was the business that was destroyed and that would make sense as we were saying it looks like you know like a nursery or something and all those all those covers were were ruined we're just ripped off so I again looking at some homes here and the damage there and the trees and the cars and and you know it's just when you look at this stuff it just you know just makes you gasp and mother nature is so powerful and and so so dangerous at times as we all know and this is proof right here well and I think it's just and you know another reason that we tell you to go to the most interior part of your home a lot of these structures that we've seen damaged Ellen they've been you know sides and northwest corner southwest corner of these homes some have been completely demolished but just heartbreaking and it's heartbreaking to see all of these flashing lights because these are all emergency managers and they're not checking on the property they're checking to make sure that people are alive and that they are ok right now over areas of Linwood Kansas and you can see so many emergency officials over areas it looks like that is a gas station there as they are blocking off roads it looks like to keep people from coming in and out that that don't belong and need to be in these areas now as we're just continuing to get this new footage in from right and that's the high school right there Linwood high and so chopper now is that is just north of 32 so it really gives you some perspective the damage not only south of 32 but also north of 32 as well looks like the high school is OK from from that perspective high school appears to be okay but Lynwood definitely right now appears to be a staging area yeah for those emergency vehicles and it was areas just west of this right so just a little bit west of Linwood that was hit so hard yeah and yeah so this is giving you some perspective here 32 that's that's the road that all those emergency vehicles are on right now and so choppers kind of going back and forth and the video that we showed you a few moments ago that was from the ground that was the person driving on 32 so that's kind of the and Gary I think we should take a quick look at the radar and because we are keeping an eye on another storm now over areas of Central ray County The Weather Service saying they're watching this as well it's not as definitive but they are considering issuing another tornado warning for areas of Rae County ok let that is gonna be on the east side let's zoom in on that put our own scope on it so we can get a look at this we were able to see the last time that it moved through Excelsior estates that tornado we were able to see that with hopefully plenty of lead time on it so we'll scope the area here in ray County and they are looking at some rotation that might be B could potentially be tightening back up again I'll step out of the frame here and let you kind of reposition that around that storm yeah I'm just trying to kind of match up some of the storm reports that are coming in and some of the latest updates from the National Weather Service's they're continuing to watch the leading edge of this storm and this his the storm is out of history of producing tornadoes that it wouldn't be the classic signature like we saw over areas of Linwood Kansas earlier this evening and let me just scope up and down the line here well I would look for areas north of Richmond I don't see anything that really although this area here a little bit northwest of Richmond right in there there could be something that wants to form but I don't see anything that I would say is really extremely tight at least at this point but again this is all east of Liberty that's the Richmond vicinity right in here it's all part of that same storm that moved through Excelsior Springs yeah that's looking much much better right here this is what they're looking at right there so it's this so it's northeast of ray bill so right where my finger is located that is beginning to tighten right back up again and it does look like we could potentially at the very least there's rotation it has everyone's kind of perked up right now and of course we're all kind of really on edge after the night that we've all been through and now to see this beginning to form again and especially now the Sun just went down so we're starting to lose our daylight so now we're basically relying on Doppler radar and some of the storm spotters that are in the area that are on this this does look like it tightened right back up again so again we're getting some pretty good gate to gate shear going on right here and that would indicate to me that definitely this thing could go tornado warned really almost at any point it's not as strong as what some of the earlier signatures were but this is still a pretty strong storm and it would be moving just to the south of Braemar and then over towards Leslie Missouri and if this thing does stay on track that would put it to the north of Carrollton which is good news for the folks in Carrollton Missouri but again you have a tornado that's that close to you and it looks like there may be a little bit of activity up here closer to Braemar actually and Gary just two areas that I'm really kind of looking at here then I'm near Braemar yeah that could the one that's at one on the north end of your scope there so I'm actually looking at two of those areas one that I was looking at was right here but then this one up here closer to Braemar that could be a little bit that's going on again keep in mind that as this continues to track north of the Missouri River it gets a little bit farther away from the Doppler radar site in Pleasant Hill Missouri now the Doppler radar and Pleasant Hill can easily see this storm without question but the farther north it gets the higher up in that storm that the radar is going to be showing you so sometimes you lose some of the surface features and you're looking a little bit higher in the sky so you need to be looking at that rotation that maybe a thousand or two thousand feet aloft and said it's something that's a little bit closer to the surface but again that's the area right in there that the Weather Service is keeping a sharp eye on but they haven't issued anything yet have they they have not now let's remind folks that on the right-hand side of your screen we are now on looking in Lynnwood Kansas so this is where the very beginning of this storm system started just after the six o'clock hour you can see people they're surveying the damage multiple emergency crews there but I'm new just as of a 47 Gary we were watching that tornado warn storm near Excelsior and now we're getting reports of damage if our crews up in the newsroom can hear so this is going to be near 130 eighth Street in Kearny and near North East 144th that they have major house damages well let me go ahead and stop you right here Aaron I'm sorry yeah and again we'll get back to that damage but this thing is really beginning to tighten just southwest of Braemar it really has a storm track on this Gary hold on Jay let's take a look at that so I'm telling you right now even though there may not be a tornado warning and Bramer I'd be at least moving to an interior room at this point it doesn't appear as though it's the strongest signature I've seen but there's definitely it definitely has my attention so if I were in Braemar I would go ahead and take shelter at this point Aaron's gonna put a track on that and again this this storm has had such a nasty history that I would I really would want a kind of error on the side of caution more than anything also had just north of Excelsior Springs near Excelsior estates indications of damage as well this does put it into Braemar basically right now so you need to be below ground it'll be moving right up the road to hitting several other towns I believe that's Avalon hail and then you can see some of the other towns that'll be along the path Erin what do you have and we're continuing to monitor the very latest coming in here to the Weather Center again this storm is not under a tornado warning but the National Weather Service along with Gary and I here at KCTV 5 closely monitoring this storm and these storms have been what we call cycling and actually you just saw that live update so let me push this here a little bit farther off towards the east these storms have had a history of what we call cycling so they will be very strong and tense we've had tornadoes on the ground we've had damage like you're seeing live pictures right now on the right-hand side of your screen Lynwood Kansas that's damage from the tornado earlier this evening and these storms have been cycling so they'll be very strong very intense very violent and then they will lose a little bit of their strength but then they've recycled back up in like areas of Excelsior where we're now getting reports of damage as well again we're continuing to monitor the latest and actually as these and the new scans just come in here about just every couple minutes we're just watching the leading edge of this storm near Braemar again no tornado warning right now for areas over ray County but we're closely monitoring this storm and we're monitoring plenty of storms not only on the north and east side of our viewing area but these storms extend for areas south and also off to the west of Kansas City as well actually let me zoom out I'm gonna okay which is good news that it does does appear as though that what appeared to be some pretty tight rotation appears to be lost near Braemar again just kind of keep your guard up because you're kind of right in the hot zone of what could potentially be something but right now no tornado warning and right now it looks like that tight tighter rotation has been lost out of that cell and Aaron we're going to go ahead and keep this going for another four or five minutes just to make sure that the people in ray County are completely safe out of this but our plans are right now is to sign off at nine o'clock if there are no tornado warnings currently ongoing so while we do that we'll kind of wrap it up a little bit if you could give us your assessment of how things look right now we'll then go with Ellen and she can do a wrap-up on what kind of damage we've seen so far and then we'll just kind of kick it back to programming absolutely now I think the one thing that's concerning I'm going to get rid of all of the storm tracks here for you and I'm going to zoom this out so we are continuing to watch the that cluster of the thunderstorms north and east within our viewing area but look out to the west Gary and I'm going to add on the watch box that is still in effect so anywhere right over areas through the heart of our viewing area including the Kansas City metropolitan area I'm going to put the latest update here again tornado watch remains in effect until ten o'clock tonight and we do have additional storm develop out over central portions of Kansas now we're gonna watch and see how they evolve as they move into our area and if they can hold together given that we've really kind of worked through the atmosphere certainly given the evening that we've had we are not going to let our guard down by any means but again we're continuing to monitor those storms north and east of Kansas City no severe thunderstorm warning right now but we do have multiple additional storms out to the west so stay connected with us here at KCTV 5 as we'll monitor all of these storms until they move out of our area over to you Gary all right well let's check in with Ellen and do a quick little wrap-up I hear on some of the damage that you've seen and maybe some of the things that really hit you pretty hard maybe what we're working on tonight at 10:00 yeah so we have crews all over the place right now we have crews in Lynwood we have crews looking at the damage there we also have crews as you guys have been talking about in Kearney in Excelsior Springs they're looking at the damage we are trying to get some more information on the injuries at Lawrence Memorial Hospital that was something that certainly stood out to us so we're trying to communicate with the deathless County Emergency Management to get some information on that I can tell you that the Kansas National Guard some of those members have been activated and they are going to help out with some of the cleanup right now and just to make sure that people are safe and if they need to go maybe rescue someone they can do that we haven't heard of any major problems of people needing to be rescued but again the Kansas National Guard is ready if they need to be and they're going to be in place so that's something that we're going to keep touching base with to make sure that that those folks are ok Gary again we're now that Sun the Sun is set chopper is getting some some really good video now of this damage but this story is something that we're going to continue to follow right and and at 10 o'clock we're gonna be back on bringing you all the coverage that that you that you could need but this is a story that's going to continue for four possible years for some of these families who have been affected well yeah it's a you know and it's it's kind of wonderful that you actually said that because you know about once every 20 years we get hit with a tornado of a tornado of this magnitude this could be the biggest tornado that's hit the Kansas City area since the Ruskin Heights tornado of the 1950s again a devastating situation and we're still starting to put the pieces together and we're trying to still compile that story of course we'll have a complete update on all of this coming up tonight at ten o'clock on kctv5 in the meantime we're going to send you back to CBS but come right back here tonight at 10 o'clock as we wrap up this whole story for you then right now let's send you back to CBS [Music] you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you you
