40 Miles Around The Tetons | Backpacking Grand Teton National Park

now this here is a story from what was once the old wild west but it ain't a story about cowboys wrangling cattle or the new sheriff in town it's a story about getting nowhere fast with nothing but a backpack and your own two feet a story about the mountains and the crisp western air but mostly it's just a story about us this beautiful lady here is my wife victoria she only stands about knee-high to a grasshopper as my dad would say and she's cuter than a button but don't let her little legs fool you she can scramble up just about anything and she'll rough and tumble with even the toughest cowboys and this is me cody a rather appropriate name for a story around these parts not much for riding horses or driving old pickup trucks but i do like to consider myself a bit of a camera aficionado and maybe even a modern day mountain man the two of us together we're not really professionals about anything but we've been known to get around a mountain a time or two which is what we're planning to do here hiking 40 miles from one side of the grand tetons to the other with a goal of finishing right back where we started now why in the hell would anybody want to go and do that well maybe it's just to see if we could so with backpacks packed and enough food to survive on an island with a blood stained volleyball we set out on this adventure starting with a seven mile hike through what is appropriately named death canyon how tall do you think that is more like 11 appropriately because within the first 10 minutes we ran into what could ultimately mean certain death a mama bear and two cubs we like just started this trail and we ran into a mama bear and two cubs and you got way too close fortunately yogi was feeling rather friendly that day and the rest of the canyon thereafter didn't feel so deadly [Music] we made it to our camping zone but i think we still have like a couple of miles to go [Music] [Applause] think this is gonna be it right here first sight in death canyon oh because i'm tired of hiking now i wish i could tell you that something real interesting happened after we set up camp but if you know anything about camping you know that's not how it works but i will tell you one thing time sure does fly by when you're doing a whole bunch of nothing [Music] so yesterday was an awesome day for us and a good introduction to the grand tetons today is probably our longest day of the backpacking trip but we got some good sleep last night and we're feeling good so it should be a good day [Music] and a good day is exactly what it was nothing but lush forests on one end and beautiful mountain vistas on the other now i don't know the exact definition of paradise but this has got to be pretty close to it [Music] [Music] and just from those little legs i was talking about earlier started to feel some sort of way we came up around the hill to our campsite for the night and boy was it a welcome one if there's anything i like more than hiking it's stopping hiking and having a lake to swim in that's just the cherry on top so we did what we always do dropped our bags and got ready to jump right in to those icy cold waters and while we do that i [Music] now [Music] well our alarm clock this morning was a nice strong sound of thunder and some rain on our tent and it looks like it's clearing up a little bit it's beautiful outside right now i views and hike some more pretty simple if you ask me [Music] it's been a great morning so far [Music] just getting the hike started and we climb up to this but of course mother nature always finds a way to throw a wrench in things if it ain't thunder and lightning it might as well be the entire valley covered in smoke because having a perfect day would just be too easy [Music] wow i mean the tetons are right there they're it's a little bit smoky today which is not ideal but we just came up to this like little vista point and it's like there's a glacier over there it's like little emerald pool with a glacier water falling into it and valley with like little pools of water it's so pretty [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] oh hallelujah okay wow that is freaking sick oh god what that's amazing [Music] okay [Music] i think we uh finally found what we were looking for coming on this trip i mean tent huge mountains and beautiful river down yonder so [Applause] i don't know uh i'm kind of glad that this was our last uh site because had this been our first site everything else wouldn't have lived up to the hype so happy to spend one more night sleeping right here [Music] this is our whole kitchen with our pantry of food we got a lot of food in here that we're just gonna grub on tonight the last night of camping is always the best night because you can eat all the food that you brought with you [Music] wow [Music] hmm hmm [Music] man last day in the tetons it has been one of the better trips we've probably ever done uh definitely one of the most scenic and it's gonna suck leaving this place you know being out in the mountains is one of my favorite things but i don't know i could really go for a good shower and some real food so it's been fun but i think we're about ready [Music] and so it seems hiking around the tetons wasn't such a great undertaking after all just one foot in front of the other until eventually you get to wherever it is you're trying to go now i'm sure there's a lesson to be learned in all this but it's not up to me to tell you what it is i guess you'll just have to find your own mountains and start walking for a little while sky high [Music] gonna try [Music] oh god it's like dirt just like how the cowboys are drinking this is cowboy coffee right here it ain't about the taste it's about the oomph i can't figure out what it it's is chewing on somebody's tobacco spit ew got more coffee it's like chewing on your brother's tobacco spit but [Applause]
