3M 6000 Series Masks - Stay Alive!

hey everybody was doing some sanding today with a little mini belt sander and give me an idea to do a video about some protective gear that you might wear while doing sanding and other things like this that has some surprising uses some of you may or may not be familiar with these masks they're the 3m 6000 series respirator masks they come in a couple different styles and I want to explain a little bit about the filters that go on these when you go into a place like say Home Depot or whatever you're going to see these two types of masks these look almost the same as the good ones and they sell them for paint vapors and stuff like that but the difference is the body is clear it's see-through these are disposable 3m masks even though they feel just as heavy as these they made it so the filters cannot be removed so you know only get these in a you know a pinch if if you need to use them for something you know because like I said you can't change the filters out and you know it's a one use only math you'll also see this mask for sale with the large pink filters on here and Home Depot only sells masks in size medium these 6000 series come in small medium and large so they fit just about everybody large fits an adult male medium usually fits most women and small I would assume will fit kids or somebody that has a really small face this would also fit like say medium will do like you know around a 10 year old something like that so now what's the deal with these big pink filters on here well these are called p100 filters they're the replacement for hepa filters so the new standard is called p 100 stay black 99.97% of solids like dust and aerosols that would get into your lungs now they're also listed for some other pretty interesting things if you see right on the filter it says it's for dust fumes mists radionuclides and asbestos so these things will actually stop radioactive dust and radioactive particles you know I'm sure like over in Fukushima right now they have trouble with the pollen and the trees becoming radioactive so this will actually trap those types of contaminants in here now the nice thing about going out to a supplier be well either Home Depot if you happen to be a size medium or another place online like PK safety is one place that sells quite a few these masks they have the full face for $100 and they sell these in different configurations for about 17 dollars for the half mask here anyway what you can do is with the 6000 series you can actually remove the filters and go ahead and change them out so you can put dust filters on here they also have some large red plastic filters that go on which are good for like all kinds of organic vapors and stuff like that they have many different combinations now the cool thing about these masks is they're really lightweight you can wear them all day long pretty much these filters here if you're just using it for sanding or whatever you can blow them off with compressed air and clean these things off you know they last a really long time and I've had masks like this since 1995 and I've only used two or three filter changes on them even doing like some heavy auto body work like sanding entire cars and everything because you know you can like I said you can clean these off pretty easily and that's a good thing other thing is they have an exhale valve on the front so all the hot air that would normally like you know if you see those regular white masks that people wear all the hot air your exhaled breath gets trapped inside them so these have an exhale valve which gets rid of all that and that's pretty pretty good 3m also sells a improved version of this mask for $30 called the 7500 series it's kind of like a bluish color and it's made out of really high quality silicone I guess and the exhale valve is on the bottom so it actually blows out down here it won't fog your glasses or even come near your face they use the same filters so they're just interchangeable between the two masks so 17 dollars for something like this or thirty dollars for just the mask if you want to get the upgrade now I'm going to show you something else that you can do with these masks so you can either go to Home Depot and buy these in only size medium which is pretty lousy or you go online and you can get your size large some welding shops and things like that will also sell these places like air gas or other specialty suppliers and auto body places too if they carry 3m masks they will probably have these in stock now what I did I went ahead and ordered a full box of twelve of these filters right here these are P 100 just like the large pink filters but they're fully enclosed inside hard plastic and you can see inside there's like a pleated filter in there I don't know if the casing can come off it looks like it might be able to so you might be able to blow these out I don't know you'll just have to see about that but the thing about these box filters it's nice is you can use these things in a wet area maybe wear some spray might be landing on this and the filter won't get wet like these these were also designed for use while welding so that hot embers and sparks and stuff don't come up and burn holes through the filter so these have a couple interesting uses now the hard covers like this mean you could use this outside and you know just wander around everywhere with it and not worry about you know hurting the filters or anything like that they're a little bit protected so they probably don't last as long as these but then again I don't know it's a pleated filter in here so it might have enough surface area okay now as we take a close look at the instructions it's got a little blurb down here about how to perform a negative pressure seal check on this there's videos on YouTube showing you how to do this kind of thing to make sure the mask seals so I'm not going to really go into that and anyway up here it says use for solid and liquid aerosols including oils that do not also admit vapors metal fumes produced from welding brazing cutting and other operations involving heating of metals and radioactive materials such as uranium and plutonium and asbestos so the long and short of this is these p100 filters on here either the pink or the enclosed box version will actually protect you against radioactive fallout you know any kind of radiation that attaches itself to dust on the ground or pollen or something like that and plus you can use them for sanding auto body mowing the lawn whatever you want to do so the prices of these are not really bad like I said $17 for this mask with box filters attached from a place like PK safety there's a bunch of other places to get these and the replacement filter sets are not that bad it's about 40 50 bucks for a box of 12 so that's enough to do six of these masks so surprising little tidbit to learn here about the 3m masks and you know go on get a set of these you know beat the rush because you know if there's ever some kind of weird emergency or whatnot you may need to use these because they're listed for liquid aerosols and they're p100 meaning they block 99.97% of aerosols in the air these should also protect against things like whatever flu bird flu SARS whatever you might want to say so they have another use so basically that's three different cool uses out of these masks and these are available everywhere unlike military gas masks where you know they're hard to wear and you know real heavy and stuff like that and you know whatever I mean these are useful for everyday types of emergency situations or just everyday sanding and stuff like that to protect your lungs from all that junk getting in there so I encourage everybody to go look up and find out where you can get these things so like I said they're the 3m 6000 series masks and there's full-face for $100 these 417 so hope you enjoyed this and
