it is a gorgeous day [Music] ha good morning welcome back to the channel welcome to the lowest are Hawaiian garage it is an absolutely gorgeous day in Hawaii as normal we get some clouds some clear skies but regardless we have a bit to get done today the truck is a bit overdue for an oil change totally my bad just haven't been paying attention we're gonna go pick up what we need for that we're also picking up some additional tools to add to the Lone Star Hawaiian collection relatively small but it is going to grow over time we need a deeper socket and a half inch extension in order to pull off the wheels and tires without absolutely demolishing the lug nuts so we're gonna pick all that up but most importantly we're gonna give you guys an update on the leveling kit from Rough Country we have a three and a half inch leveling kit which is basically that spacer on the top of the strut if you're new to the channel this is the most budget-friendly way to lift your truck three and a half inches without the upper control arms again the most budget way to do it is it really worth it or should you just bite the bullet and do it right the first time we'll find out today but without further ado [Music] [Applause] [Music] all my car guys will understand when you go to Walmart that's where you park [Music] and I need a new one of these so it actually ran over my last one with my truck when I was making my last video all right we're now back at home and it's time to change the oil now we're gonna be using an oil change box I've never seen this anywhere except Hawaii you fill this up and you throw it in regular trash that's what the recommendation is strange but I'm an absolute professional when it comes to making a huge mess when changing his oil so this might be entertaining success that is really hot I want to pause really quick to get your opinion on something what do you feel is the best oil for the Silverado obviously I use the cash roll the reason behind using that is that's what my dad uses he's used that from as long as I can remember yet a 91 Silverado 1500 just like this that had nearly 300,000 miles on it now he would be driving that stupid thing still today if it didn't get stolen off his work lot well that was unfortunate so he went out and got a 99 Silverado 1500 and that one's got over 200,000 miles on it again still running with no problems and what does he use Castrol so naturally when I gravitate towards a brand of oil I go with Kestrel now my question for you is what do you feels the best oil and why leave it in the comments below because those gearheads have a genetic deficiency in which we like spending money on a lot of nonsense which in fact it's throwing money into your vehicle it could be worse we could be spending money on drugs but because we spend money on cars we have no money for drugs and we're always broke so let me know in the comments what you guys think why alright alright the oh let's changed and we've got what we needed from the store so let's go ahead and continue on with the real reason we're making this video if you are new to the channel welcome and please subscribe this is a 2007 Silverado it has a three and a half inch Rough Country leveling kit the kit is the one without the upper control arms basically the cheapest kit you can buy to lift your truck up oh hi Dallas now also on the truck are these moto metal 962 wheels there are 18 inches by 10 inches wide the offset is negative 24 tires 33 inches by 12 and a half wide no rubbing problems because we had to do a mini NorCal on the inner fender here now if you're curious what that is just youtube it custom offsets have some great tutorials on that but let's talk about the leveling kit and the kit is the non upper control arm kit so that means these are the stock upper control arms that are all mounted the only thing had to do to modify to fit this was to cut the bump stop there from the bottom now the stock struts have a three and a half inch spacer that's mounted to the top which gives you your three and a half inches of lift everything else under here is still stock and it's still functioning relatively well my trucks don't drive straight down the road so we're gonna talk quick about the advantages of this kit and then we'll talk about some of the disadvantages and the negative impacts of installing a kit like this so first off I'd Alice again always Center frame first off is looks this kit is all about looks you get zero performance advantages when it comes to installing in fact you actually get some compromises when it comes to your suspension and how it handles but this kit is only about looks if you're looking for something to get your truck lifted up to go off-road and you're gonna drive it somewhat hard this is not the kit for you and you will destroy your front-end but I said we're talking about the positives first so the biggest positive out of all of this is the price under two hundred bucks you can lift your truck up and make it look like an off-road truck you can't beat that price really anywhere else if you're living on mainland in the lower 48 pack don't even ship it to you for free so under two hundred bucks you can have a truck that pretty much looks like this height wise now another positive of this it gives you the ability that bolts up bigger wheels bigger tires these are 33 inches tall twelve and a half inches wide we got wider wheels got a more aggressive offset we've got a better stance all giving to the ability we have a taller truck now I'm certain you could probably fit thirty three inch tires and this set up on a stock Silverado but you would have to do some serious cutting back here and some serious trimming in the front this allowed us to do just a mini NorCal not a huge modification on the indoor fender and it fits fine at full turn we have over an inch of clearance here at the back over an inch of clearance here at the front so we have no rubbing issues whatsoever so that's advantage number two the third advantage I'm going to talk about is the amount of clearance I have with this current set up so three and a half inches of lift in the front gives me an enormous amount of ground clearance on my front end and I pull this light down here to show you a little bit better exactly what I'm talking about obviously the 33 inch tires being a taller tire attributes a part of that but that is an enormous amount of clear hits on the front end of my truck now looking closer exactly how much clearance I have measuring from there to the ground I have 16 inches of ground clearance on the front that my truck that's not bad for a stock setup essentially being a spacer on the strut that's a lot of clearance now all this clearance does come at a cost as a mission before all the suspension components under here are still factory lower control arms - tie rod ends the upper control arms everything as it was coming from the factory now if you take a look first here at the bottom the lower control arm PHY back up and you take a look at the steep angle this comes down from the center mounted point that's a pretty extreme angle if you look at a Baja type truck or a long travel suspension you'll see angles like this coming down but this is not a long travel suspension it's just factory with a space you're mounted at the top basically what this extreme angle does it puts a lot of pressure and a lot of stress on this lower ball joint the inner is extremely stretched the outer portion is compressed and I'm in a flat surface in my garage so going down the road that's not very happy and will eventually lead to a premature failure of this ball joint so that's issue number one and I'll just work my way up from here second off is my tie rod end before I went and got this aligned I just sprayed the bottom here which is some flat black paint just to make it look clean now if you take a look at the threads there you can see how far out this tie rod end has been adjusted in order to align this truck after the line I talked to the guy who did it and he basically mentioned I can't go up one millimeter higher or else this tie rod it will fall off so this to me is extremely unsafe and you take a look at how many threads are exposed I can imagine there being too much more on the inside of here holding this thing together so that's issue number two not going towards the outside of this if you take a look at the angle that's sitting at that's not a very happy angle again on a flat surface upper control arms so these are they stock upper control arms again the kit did not come with the rough country upper control arms and take a look at that angle that upper ball joint doesn't look very happy and from what I can read and what research I've done this is the point of most failure when it comes to these type of kits with all this crap I'm showing you under here and the severe angles it's sitting hats I'm 5,000 miles in on this haven't had one problem at all to be honest going down the highway you really can't tell a difference with a suspension now at lower speeds around turns hitting speed bumps you do feel that the suspension is a little uneasy and I'll go over more details on that here in just a minute but again you get a lifted truck 200 bucks you can put some bigger wheels and tires and get a more aggressive stance it's it's really hard to complain and I really hadn't had any serious issues so far so speaking of ride quality let's go ahead and go for a drive we'll talk a little bit more about how it feels going down the highway as well as around turns and back roads okay so what we're doing now we are cruising at a higher rate of speed now let's say Hawaii highway speeds mainland it's like a fast residential area but we're cruising about 50 55 miles an hour now the kid we have on it all the suspension components I don't feel a difference between our stock setup and this current setup the truck drives arrows straight lift my hands off the wheel the truck will continue straight down the road no problem at all I got the air conditioning going nice relaxing day I don't feel a difference between this and stock it's a little bit stiffer when you hit those highway proportions that are a little bit more bumpy you do feel more planted but at the end of the day there's not a huge difference on the highway and to be honest I don't notice a difference [Music] alright let's stow this down a little bit we're pulling into a very poorly maintained parking lot which is a perfect setting to explain how uneasy the suspension feels at lower speeds so let's pull in here and oh hey look at this there's a bunch of speed bumps so this will be a perfect setting to showcase of what I'm talking about [Music] [Music] alright guys it is now the next morning things got a little busy last night and we lost daylight's oh I figured we finish this up this morning so I hope you can see and understand what I was talking about with this kit and with the suspension with those harsh angles of the upper control arm the lower control arm the way the ball joint is sitting when you hit a speed bump we hit a bump in the road it kicks the tire out a solid one to two inches as the wheel comes up now that puts a lot of strain on every single one of those joints because as that tire comes up all that pressure is being put at that point on the joint and then pushing that tire out that's where those terrible feelings from the driver's seat comes from is you does not feel comfortable but I cannot reiterate this enough we are five thousand miles in on this leveling kit I've had zero problems and I really can't complain too much what can you really expect from a sub $200 kit to lift your truck three and a half inches now at the end of all things is this kit worth it or should you just go out and buy the real thing the first time and my suggestion would be yes go and get a real kit go and get one that supplies you with the performance as well as looks now this kit if here are absolutely on a tight tight budget and all you want is the left your truck this will do but a long-term solution I believe it's gonna be causing a lot of problems down the road versus you know investing up front on a better kit so that's the plan here in the coming months is to actually look further into a higher performance kit which will give me about four to six inches of lift I hope you enjoyed this upload today I've had countless questions on this rough country kit and I was hoping to touch on a few of those questions today if I didn't answer your question please leave it in the comments below and I'll try to get to it as I can if you enjoyed this video go ahead and give it a big thumbs up if you haven't subscribed to the channel yet please subscribe it's actually Mother's Day today so I'm gonna head inside and join Mother's Day with my wife to all you mothers out
