vikings in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit by the grace and peace of our lord jesus christ the love of god and the communion of the holy spirit be with you all this morning we begin our lenten journey by celebrating ash wednesday as we begin our season of lent we are reminded and i'll talk a little bit more in my homily it's very much like spring training for baseball or conditioning for any other sport or even perhaps if you're a dancer it's like doing all your exercises and kind of getting you ready for yourself ready for another season of dance if we don't take the time to practice well we can't perform well in the same way we don't take the time to practice our faith well we can't live it well and so as we begin our celebration we begin in prayer let us pray grant oh lord that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of christian service so as we take a battle against spiritual evils we may be armed with weapons of ma of self restraint through our lord jesus christ your son who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the holy spirit god for ever and ever [Music] a reading from the prophet joel even now says the lord return to me with your whole heart with fasting and weeping and mourning rend your hearts not your garments and return to the lord your god for gracious and merciful is he slow to anger rich in kindness and relenting in punishment perhaps he will again relent and leave behind him a blessing offerings and libations for the lord your god blow the trumpet in zion proclaim a fast call an assembly gather the people notify the congregation assemble the elders gather the children and infants at the breast let the bridegroom quit his room and the bride her chamber between the porch and the altar let the priests the ministers of the lord weep and say spare o lord your people and make not your heritage or reproach with the nations ruling over them why should they say among the peoples where is their god then the lord was stirred to concern for his land and took pity on his people the word of the lord [Music] be merciful o lord for we have sinned [Music] be merciful o lord for we have sinned have mercy on me o god in your goodness in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my orphans thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me [Music] for i acknowledge my offense and my sin is before me always against only you have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight [Music] [Music] a clean heart create formula and a steadfast spirit renewed in me [Music] cast me not out from your presence and your holy spirit take not from me [Music] be merciful o lord for [Music] a reading from the second letter of saint paul to the corinthians [Music] brothers and sisters we are ambassadors for christ as if god were appealing through us we implore you on behalf of christ be reconciled to god for our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of god in him working together then we appeal to you not to receive the grace of god in vain for he says in an acceptable time i heard you and on the day of salvation i helped you behold now is a very acceptable time behold now is the day of salvation the word of the lord [Applause] [Music] praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] praise to you lord jesus christ be godless glory [Music] if today you hear his voice hearted not your hearts praise to you lord jesus christ king of endless glory [Music] the lord be with you a reading from the holy gospel according to matthew glory to you jesus said to his disciples take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them otherwise you will have no recompense from your heavenly father when you give alms do not blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they win the praise of others amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you give alms do not let your left hand know what your right is doing so that your almsgiving may be secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you pray do not be like the hypocrites who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them amen i say to you they have received their reward but when you pray go to your room [Music] close the door and pray to your father in secret and your father who sees in secret will repay you when you fast do not look gloomy like the hypocrites they neglect their appearance so that they may appear to others to be fasting and then i say to you they have received their reward but when you fast anoint your head and wash your face so that you may not appear to be fasting except to your father who is hidden and your father who sees what is hidden will repay you the gospel of the lord praise you lord jesus christ okay i need a couple volunteers this morning but here's the key if you want to volunteer you have to come up here and you're gonna have to talk to the rest of the school on this so number one i need a sports player if you're a sports player raise your hand yep yep you right there what's your name ally come on i just go stand up front there all right next thing i need i need somebody who is like a dancer a dancer type of person just go standing up up there come on up what's your name what is it delaney come on up all right now i need somebody um let's see somebody who plays a musical instrument music all right come on up what's your name what is it jackson come on up all right very good all right last but not least i need somebody who doesn't do any of that stuff [Music] all right very good come on up all right just go ahead step up on the steps [Applause] okay here we go we'll make you go first you don't even know what you're doing yet so you're good tell everybody your name in case they don't know who you are hi i'm allie ally what do you do um i play volleyball you play volleyball okay pass it on down what's your name delaney and what do you do um i dance okay very good pass it on down it's on i'm jackson and i play the guitar okay very good and last but not least i'm cruised i do nothing and you do nothing okay very good excellent very good let's give them all a round of applause for volunteering all right no no no no no no no no no not done yet let me have that would you say your name was cruz he thinks he's got the easy one he won't there you go all right so you said your name was and i've already forgotten ali very good and you are a volleyball player what do you have to do every year to get ready for the volleyball season um practice what does that look like um passing to yourself setting hitting talk right in the mic passing setting hitting to yourself but did you practice last year for the volleyball season yes okay why are you doing it again this year because it's because you have to go to this really big tournament it's called nationals okay so you want to go to nationals and if you don't practice and you don't have to get ready if you don't practice every year for the tournament or for the season what happens to you you don't go you don't go you're probably not a very good player right yeah okay all right pass it on to delaney delaney what do you do um i dance ballet you you dance ballet so do you do that all year long you do that just a couple of times a couple of months a year how does that look um well uh i do it all the time okay i do it every year okay so throughout the year you're practicing do you ever have any bad habits getting your dancing no no never sort of sort of okay that's good how do you get rid of those bad habits um [Music] i don't know i just um i'm sorry i don't know you don't how do you get well what do you do if you want to get rid of a bad habit what might your dance teacher tell you to do um did you keep practicing do you keep practicing and practicing the right way or the wrong way to do it yeah which way the right or the wrong right the right way okay very good pass it on down jackson right yeah so jackson you play the guitar yeah how would it be if i picked up a guitar right now and played it um you put your fingers on it and then you sing it okay all right very good so how long have you been playing the guitar um um eight okay very good so and how have you gotten better playing the guitar um practicing do you practice it yeah all right do you have a teacher that helps you learn how to strum and where to put your hand across across the um the string board and where which one are the threats to put your hands on all that stuff yeah okay very good all right on to the next one cruz you do nothing right nothing nothing who's his homeroom teacher does he do nothing oh okay all right very good all right so here's the hardest part so what you heard from your fellow schoolmates is that whether they're dancing whether playing volleyball or playing the guitar they have to practice they have to try to even every year if they do it they keep doing this practicing right did you hear that yes or no what speaking of microphone yeah okay very good excellent so you heard that now the tough question comes for you what's today called ash wednesday what is ash wednesday the beginning of you have to ask one of your fellow class schoolmates up there asking for help what the beginning of lent what's the end of lent easter very good all right how about we give all these guys a round of applause thank you guys good job good job go back to seats [Music] all right so what we heard this morning whether you are a dancer whether you are playing guitar whether you're a volleyball player or if you think you do [Music] nothing whether whatever you are in order to be the best dancer to be the best volleyball player to be the best guitar player all of that takes practice all of that takes practices and as we do those things we develop good habits as well as bad habits and our teachers in those or our coaches help us to practice so that we can get rid of the bad habits and be better at the good thing as crew said today is ash wednesday it's the beginning of lent and it really is our chance as christians for the next 40 days it's actually 46 days till easter from here you've got to count the sundays back into this whole thing but over the course of the next 46 days for us to practice being better christians better students better sons and daughters better brothers and sisters better moms and dads better priests better aunts and uncles to do all of those things and we do the practice that we use the skills we use is what we heard about in the gospel we pray we fast we almost give we should be praying every day the fasting the fasting really means giving up so perhaps we're giving up something for this lent but hopefully it's something that will help us in the long term so guess what i've decided i'm going to give up you ready for this i'm giving up eating between meals i don't think this is gonna go so well but i'm gonna try my best but then the hardest thing for me to give up because i went back and i started looking over the last couple of months i love breakfast at mcdonald's so i've decided i'm going to give that up it's going to help my waistline and it's going to help me be better and hopefully at the hopefully at the end of lent my plan is because i've had a chance to practice giving up these things i will realize the better habits that i develop so whether you're playing sports whether you're playing instrument whether you're dancing whether you're trying to be a better artist whether you're trying to be a better writer whatever you do you do it so you become better and you have to practice that so in my case giving up these things i'm not just going to go back out on easter sunday i hope and eat a whole bunch of mcdonald's breakfast in one day i'll probably get sick if i were to do that but hopefully this giving up will help me be better and develop better habits and then lastly that almsgiving that sounds like a weird word but another way of thinking about almsgiving is being of service to one another how do we be of service and we can be of service in many ways we do that as a school sometimes when we have dress down days or we write cards to people or we even pray for people praying although we pray and we fast and we almost give being of service can also be praying but all those things we do so we can be better christians that we can better love god above all things love our neighbors as ourselves and be best at living the golden rule treating others as we ourselves would like to be treated and so that's my challenge for all of us today our classmates our friends were up here to help us to show us that no matter what we do we need to be pr we practice so we can become better look at this lent as an opportunity to practice so however you pray whatever you're giving up and whatever you're doing to be of service how will that make you how will that make us a better christian on easter sunday how will our praying our fasting our almsgiving are practicing of doing the right thing how will that help us to be better and share with them with one another better the love that christ has given us makes you interested but brothers and sisters let us humbly ask god our father that he might be pleased to bless with the abundance of his grace these ashes that we will use and place on our heads as a sign of our repentance oh god you are moved by acts of humility and you respond with forgiveness to works of penance lend your merciful ear to our prayers today and your and in your great kindness pour out the grace of your blessing on these your servants who are soon to be marked with these ashes that as we follow our lenten observances of praying fasting and alms giving that we may be worthy to come with minds made pure to celebrate the great feast of easter through christ our please lord forward [Music] a clean heart o god create in me create in me a clean heart of god [Music] oh god in your goodness have mercy on me in your compassion wipe out my offense thoroughly wash me from my guilt and cleanse me from my sins [Music] created me a clean heart o god a clean heart o god [Music] acknowledge my offense and my sin is always before me against only you have i sinned and done what is evil in your sight [Music] created [Music] a clean heart create for me o a steadfast spirit renew in me cast me not out from your presence oh take not your holy spirit from me [Music] created me a clean heart oh god the clean heart oh god [Music] give us back the joy of our salvation and renewing us a willing spirit oh lord open my lips lord open my [Music] in lips a clean heart o god a clean heart oh god [Music] let us [Music] let us [Music] might forgive us our sins let us [Music] [Music] that our god rich in mercy might forgive us our sins let the priests [Music] and the [Music] spell do not close the mouths of those who sing your praise oh lord blood out my transgressions oh lord have mercy on your lord according to your great mercy according to the multitude of your tender mercies blot out my transgressions [Music] my transgressions let the priests come ministers of the lord [Music] stand between the porch and the altar [Music] spare your people do not close the mouths of those who sing your praise wash me yet more from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin blot out my transgressions [Music] of the lord stand between the porch and the altar [Music] and [Music] spare your people do not close the laws of those who sing your praise [Music] for i know my iniquity and my sin is always before me blood out my transgressions oh lord [Music] let the priests come in the lord [Music] and we [Music] spare your people do not close the laws of those who sing your praise [Music] blot out my transgressions [Music] join me in singing jesus remember me jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom [Music] jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom so as you heard we've been marked now with these ashes and the side of the cross as many of you know the ashes come from the palms from last year and as we burn them we are reminded that as fire transforms those palms from palms to ashes so our lenten practices our praying are fasting our almsgiving that helps us to repent and to believe in the gospel the repentance that we do is our practice that's our practice to be better to be better christians uh to be better to one another and to love god better too confident that god always remains with us we turn now towards him and we lift up our prayers and our petitions the response is lord hear our prayer for all who preach the gospel and minister to the people of god especially pope francis bishop edward our pastors parish priests and all religious we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for peace throughout the world and an end to hatred and division among people and nations we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for the leaders of nations and for all who lead and protect the people of the world we pray to the r lord hear our prayer for all who seek justice freedom and peace and for those who speak out for the less fortunate among us we pray to the lord hear our prayer for the teachers staff and students of saint anthony of padua elementary school that they may trust that god will take care of them during this difficult time we pray to the lord lord hear our prayer for sam lupica for whom this mass is offered and the intentions that we hold in the silence of our hearts we pray to the lord go to gracious god we give you thanks for all the gifts and blessings that you have already bestowed upon us grateful for these gifts and aware that you always hear our prayers we ask that you will hear the prayers we place before you today we ask that not only will you hear them but if it be your will and for our good we ask that you will grant what we have asked and that you do all of these things through christ our lord [Music] our source [Music] our strength and courage [Music] come make us [Music] one of god for all you suffered lamb of god you died and rose [Music] glory lamb of god to lead us home [Music] eternal word of [Music] god of god resound within us [Music] our consolation [Music] our source of hope of life [Music] come make us pray brothers and sisters that my sacrifice and yours may become acceptable to god the almighty father as we solemnly offer the annual sacrifice for the beginning of lent we ask you o lord that through works of penance and charity we may turn our ourselves away from harmful pleasures and cleanse from our sins may become worthy to celebrate the passion of your son who lives and reigns forever and ever the lord be with you lift up your hearts let us give thanks to the lord our god it is truly right and just our duty and our salvation always and everywhere to give you thanks lord holy father almighty and eternal god for you will that are giving up should give you thanks help to humble our sinful pride contribute to the feeding of the poor and so help us imitate you in your great love and kindness and so we glorify you now with countless angels angels as with one voice of praise we acclaim [Music] are full of your paused [Music] blessed is he who comes in the name of the [Music] lord is [Music] you are indeed holy o lord and from the world's beginning you are ceaselessly at work so that our human race may become holy just as you yourself are holy look we pray upon your people's offerings and pour out upon them the power of your spirit that they may become the body and blood of your beloved son jesus christ in whom we too are your sons and your daughters indeed though we were once lost and could not approach you you loved us with the greatest love for your son jesus who alone is just handed himself over to death and did not disdain to be nailed for our sake to the wood of this cross but before jesus arms are outstretched between heaven and earth to become for us the lasting sign of your covenant he desired to celebrate the passover's passover with his disciples as he ate with them he took bread and giving you thanks he said the blessing broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying take this all of you and eat of it for this is my body which will be given up for you in a similar way when supper was ended knowing that he was about to reconcile all things in himself through his blood to be shed on the cross jesus took the chalice filled with the fruit of the vine and once more giving you thanks he handed the chalice to his disciples saying take this all of you and drink from it for this is the chalice of my blood the blood of the new and eternal covenant which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins do this in memory of me the mystery of faith [Music] we proclaim your death [Music] therefore as we celebrate the memorial of your son jesus christ who is our passover and our lasting insurance peace we celebrate his death and resurrection from the dead and looking forward to his blessed coming we offer you who are our faithful loving and merciful god the sacrificial victim who reconciles to you the human race look kindly most compassionate father upon those you unite
