hey guys david pingree here with vital MX and a very very special race shop project so we're here in Park City Utah or just outside of it and we're at Spencer Luke sacks property it's called the flying iron horse ranch you've probably seen video a lot of the pros during this last run of Supercross testing and riding out of this facility he invited us up to test one of the bikes he's been building his work is always incredible he likes to take you know anything from really old bikes to this current 20 20 KTM 350 and I've just by looking at this thing you can see there's nothing stock on it there's nothing that hasn't been touched polished fixed coated or replaced with titanium or something cool I'll just tell you that I've never been to a track with better scenery there's literally a creek flowing through over here you were up up at elevation here in the mountains it's unreal he brought in I don't know how many truckloads of sand and screened dirt to build this thing specifically so the tracks incredible facilities incredible and the bike as you can imagine was incredible [Music] [Music] everyone spencer Luczak here we are at our home facility just outside Park City Utah this is the flying iron horse ranch presenting today this was supposed to be my daily driver turned into a little bit more than that this is Molly as you might know all my bikes are named from women in rock and roll songs so Metallica's whiskey najjar Oh was the theme for this some might say that I overdo it a little bit but this is just what I do and I don't really know any other way to build so to start off you know it's it's monotone it's grey it's black there's some brush silver in here not a lot of color but the detail on the bike is pretty extensive and starting from the base up I went to my friend Matt Jory over at proven moto and I said you know what I love the 350 I love how playful it is I don't race anymore but I want to have something fun you know for me there at the track the sand dunes maybe some trails let's build a motor that is reliable but it really just reinforces all the strengths of the bike and it gives it a little bit more that lowing grunt where it's lacking some of its finesse knowing Matt he always takes care of me he helps out we do the best we can and I wanted I wanted to showcase some of his work his handiwork over the years and so the powerplant for this 350 is a reliable yet very strong fast motor and we're we're up here just shy of 6,000 feet elevation we've got to make everything we can to make sure the bike doesn't feel like it's you know slow so inside the motor we do have works cam port work head's been milled high-compression pistons to day we are running pro six and it's got a twin air filter cage on it so we took out that back screen and then something I learned from you know one of the earlier shots with vital is switching out the air boot to the previous model it's got a longer stack on it which allows us to get more of that bottom end back and I talked to Jamie Ellis about it and he said they were able to get about a foot pound of torque something back just going to that other air boot not only did we make the internals as bulletproof as we can Jim Hasker helped us out with all of the micro finishing micro-polishing he does a really good job and he knows my builds are meticulous so he spends a lot of time going in between those gears to make sure that it's spinning as freely as it can and if you look closely you'll notice that some of the coloring on the motor is a little different we've a preponed it cleaned it polished it and then we went down and actually did kind of a ceramic coat but it's a little bit harder base it's like a kadai zhing we did this nice gunmetal gray to offset the fifty shades of gray throughout even the cylinder base you got the top up here with our custom laser engraving by mhr Nick I've been working with to do some other cool engravings and then down below during the primary case and the water pump with and the Hilo concepts billet water pump impeller give it a better flow it spins freer it's a lot stronger so that's the motor that's roughly the powerplant obviously FMF on here running there ty header up front my good buddy Luke Santos does a lot of work for me helping to hand polish and do a hand brush finished and then weary heat treat it before we get any prints on it and we're actually running a stainless rear end not just for the look but we hand brush finished it has a little bit more durability in the canister in case it tips over and it complements the theme of the bike so powerplant very strong thanks to everyone involved on that side moving on at the suspension I've never owned the national shock that MX tech makes and I've never owned a set of works cone valve WP Forks so I was able to call in some favors we got a set of used spring Forks and then I sent it back over to Japan where they Kashima coated them took the red seals off and we did a hard polished anodizing to fit the theme so I've never seen a set of works WP Forks with us on but with this MX tech national shock the colors are phenomenal but the performance is what we were really after this shock by itself with all its billet hardware it's not even running at I coil drop two and a half pounds over what you would have on a track shock so as long as the performance is there we're getting significant weight savings bringing it back down so so far so good it looks phenomenal the shell coil is actually done in a black chrome coating so it matches the dlc that comes through and you'll see really close there's a little hang loose in there so custom decals that they let me kind of fit up super-excited about that these are set of wheels that warp nine helped create it's running they're 70 50 grade aluminum warp 90 delete rim so a pretty stiff rim but the coolest part about this that you'll see in other photos and some of the video the spokes are actually all titanium it's a cold-rolled titanium mixed in with the billet and kind of Kashima coating we put on the hubs when you get up nice and close you'll notice that the hub is actually the standard KTM hub and I wanted to utilize it with those Thai spokes because it's been race proven they're awesome and they're super lightweight I think in the market they're one of the lightest hubs out there so I sent the hubs and a list of other parts over to Jerry at a lumen art and he does this coating that looks just like Kashima he calls faux SEMA to match in with our true Kashima bits and pieces on the suspension and we saved two pounds of weight on each wheel set so just in the wheels alone you're saving four pounds of unsprung mass which I learned is critical for accelerating and stopping getting into breaker bumps you notice a difference so four pounds total weight and then running warp nines hi axle front and rear and pivot bolt was another pound and a half of weight savings so between the wheels and some of that low-end mass we're in the five and a half pound you know shaving rate and we just upped it by four and a half foot pound of torque and almost eight brake horsepower at peak so that kind of gives the overall feel to bike but then going into the bits and pieces works connection has always been good to us they've always helped out with some of these little knickknacks with custom numbers Pingree and I share the 101 so it makes a lot easier to test we don't keep switching stuff out so works connection thank you so much there nihilo concepts has been helping me out with some of my builds they are a carbon skid plate down here and balance right up there's no mounting tabs you know it takes 30 seconds bolt it all up it's nice it's very very clean so they do a great job with that we also have their billet throttle housing and this thing is it's so light it's so buttery and paired with these arc mem LAN levers it just has a fitting feel that I've kind of grown to love so with the hydraulic clutch and the brakes factory Brembo brakes on here that we bought through grant Langston's motorsports dealership they were able to help us out those price wise and then with some of the other bits on here obviously Hinson clutch Rob you are the man thank you for all you do supplying us to make sure that we're getting everything we can out of the motor motor stuff that does a lot of my braking and their brake rotors are phenomenal the modulation in there Scott does a phenom job at testing those and obviously supplying the pro peg Thai foot pegs and a few other bits there it just complements the bike in a way that all your contact points feel comfortable with these extra clamps I haven't got to run their new mounting system up here but technical touch was able to support us on there so I'm excited to get some feedback and other than that di D supplied the chains this ER t3 chain is phenomenal it has no dragon it it's super light comes ready to go I can't thank him enough for helping being onboard helping us with that Talon Volans been awesome supplying us with some mature B's plastic I know gray is kind of the hot color right now but I wanted to try it on this different build and Ryan at throttle syndicate was able to match up this graphic into this old-school seat design where they tie in it's got my patches on here and you'll notice that the numbers on here are actually it's kind of it's a brush to metal inlay so even here and in the custom rental bar pad that's where you get close to the bike and you really see the detail pop to connect the whole theme so Ryan and your son you guys did a great job thank you for working with me thank you for your patience and getting everything together to just make it look factory but different with Iturbi I am running one of their carbon rotor guards on there it looks killer and then will over at light speed started making these factory Akrapovic chain guide so it's full carbon everything's been seeing see machine so I'm running one of those on their legacy carbon they've got this little down piece over here of carbon that helps all of the guides the wires that come down the side of the motor over the ignition also with the ergonomics of the bike and the performance of the chassis itself this is where I don't get a always test product but I know recently these new head state mounts and engine mounts from factory chassis parts has been kind of a hot topic so Chris sent me a pair and normally they come in more of a bronze orange color but again I couldn't leave well enough alone I wanted to tie in with the burnishing of the pipe and some of the Kashima so I had a lumen art also take those hand polish them weari laser edged them put some titanium bolts in to see kind of how it felt an FCP with their motor mounts we've got their Thai foot peg pins as well and one of the last things which obviously the bike comes standard in a black not a black swingarm well I couldn't leave the black powder-coat on one it was too thick and it wasn't quite the color way that I wanted so we stripped everything down chemically stripped it we went through in vapor honed both pieces and then after we dried that out this is actually done in a product called steel it and it holds up really well to abrasion it's corrosive resistant and you can weld over the top of it and the other nice thing for building custom bikes it's not like powder coat where it builds up these intolerances - putting bolts in we were able to slide stuff in without shaving and frame down so it took about four cans of aerosol to do the frame and the swing arm I think it turned out really good it's kind of a satin finish in the end up in the front we didn't really have it tuned in today but I do ride a ride Engineering steering damper setup it's a Honda Showa steering damper right engineering builds the pieces that go on an Adrian does help me out with those so I appreciate getting that in will be able to dial it in on the rougher tracks so now that we've gone pretty much through the whole bike I hope I didn't miss anything I think it turned out beautiful not only does it look just killer I think painting had a fun time on it and I know grant langston had a fun time on it so we'll kind of turn it back to them we'll see how it handled on the track and hopefully I get a go right at some time this week we'll see [Music] well thanks Spencer this thing's incredible so on the track initial impression and we just did a 350 at home with twisted development so I was really anxious to see how the proven moded proven moto has secured all the parts that are on this bike compared to what we did because ours was kind of similar we didn't go over the top with cams or anything like that he wanted it to be durable and reliable but squeeze the most performance out of it he could so they're kind of on an even platform from that perspective again we're at pretty high elevation here almost 6,000 feet yeah so it's a pretty high up that's gonna have own effect on the bike but what I noticed initially huge torque gains and on the 350 that's the big that's the big secret that's what you want out of this thing it still revs to the moon like these things do they they surpass the horsepower that a four stock 450 makes and carry way off beyond that so getting that extra top-end isn't what you're after it's the torque it's that low-end coming out of turns that's where the stock 350 is a little underwhelming this thing has it in spades so you come out of the turn and it's just just rolls on really good even here at elevation here in these sandy turns it's deep deep sand once once in a while if I really got buried in I'd have to give it a couple hits with the clutch but then it goes and it pulls super strong and again just to the moon so you could leave it in a gear long you could grab a gear early and it wouldn't still pull it so the motor was great I will tell you it took me a little bit of time to get the jumps down on this track as a guy who's not doesn't ride every day there's some big jumps out here there's a couple pretty good-sized the road gap over here they call it I've jumped too flat like Evel Knievel the first time and to the credit of the suspension they soaked it up great the suspension is a little bit firm and I told Spencer that he may want to when he gets two tracks that are more small chopped and bumpy he may end up coming out on the on the compression clickers and trying to look for a little more given that you know just so it's a little more subtle in the small stuber's supple but for me here today not a lot of bumps but big jumps G outs set of whoops which I haven't hit in years I wasn't set in the world on fire but I was getting through them so I was having a lot of fun and the thing handled great awesome clutch feedback full Hinson setup so no surprise there tires were great it's the Dunlop it's the setup that I like the 50 33 amazing footpegs again you know I always say I'm big on my contact points so grips pegs and seat and all that stuff was just perfect bikes really comfortable and then a lot of the chassis stuff it's really tough you know the factory chassis parts and the different things he's done to it it's hard for me to tell because I'm not riding it back to back with the stock components but I can just tell you that it tracks really well there's a set of sand rollers that you kind of manual through and obviously you're coming from left to right in a lot of these little tight sandy switchbacks and the bike lays out of one turn and into another really easily you're not ever fighting it the only issue I had and with turning it and terms of the chassis was at times on the flat turns it was a little muddy early but the front end would push a little and I said again that's just a condition of that stiff front end you know once you come out a couple clicks on that compression it'll it'll settle in a little in that turn and bite better arc levers which are really cool and these are the mem LAN bendable ones so if you go down which Langston took a turn and rip the end off the grip standard grant Langston but he took he tested the arc mem LAN lever and it bent right back into place so all around just super stoked on the way this bike work I wish I could ride it at sea level and he's talking about making a trip down to Southern Cal so maybe we get another chance on it but I can tell you that at this elevation for this thing to perform as well maybe a little better than the bike we built down there that's really impressive so kudos to Matt jewelry and the proven guys everyone that's involved in in making this engine work and you heard the list of things that was done to it it's it's not short but that's what makes his build so cool it's a piece of art I'd put it up on a wall he likes to come beat it up in the dirt but anyway amazing amazing project and if you ever see this at the pits somewhere come over and check it out he'll Bend your ear telling you all about it but it's gonna be interesting to you so check it out look through all the photos that we got of this thing I could say we went into a lot of detail because there is a lot of detail thank you guys for watching Spencer thanks so much for having us this ranch is incredible thank you guys for watching we'll see you next time you you
