it's the last motorcycle that's ever been in this garage for sure [Music] hmm [Music] all the way and a day early it's good how was it great it stayed put in everything you literally saved the project the shipping company dropped the ball three times on me so just to have this thing in the driveway better late than never lifesaver glad i could help weather was good yeah well albuquerque did just it snowed but it was good okay when i went through okay it was dirty naturally yeah i don't think it got any cleaner or dirtier than it was before oh that honda developed this motorcycle specifically to humble people oh really yeah i'm pretty sure that was the intention to humble anyone who thought they were tough i'll take your word for it all right i'm gonna i'm gonna grab the ramp there she is 1994 cr5 one is finally landed here in garage 93 we're gonna give our third whack a red bull's day in the dirt so we got a month ahead of us plenty of work to do so excited just to get this thing started and have an heirloom piece of a historic motocross fight so the notorious cr500 has officially landed in garage 93 this one came all the way from minnesota a good friend of mine brian okabo had this in his possession for many years and it's by far the most requested bike build that we've had in the series it's the meanest most humbling motocross motorcycle i think in existence i even know a guy that broke his leg kickstarting one so just to say that it takes a it takes a raw type of grit to be the owner rider ripper of a cr i don't know if i have it in me to ride this thing but i sure do to build it and we're gonna see what that looks like a day in the dirt but first just like anything else that's coming into garage 93 we need to get this thing washed torn down assess all the pieces and see where we need to start out so the goal with the wash is to get the thing as clean as possible before i start breaking stuff down and detail cleaning things in the parts washer but something like this chain which is shot there's definitely no sense of me spending time to clean it so i'm gonna pop the master link take this thing off and in the rubbish bin it goes [Music] [Music] hopefully if i put a splash of gas in this thing i can get it to fire off dang quite possibly the loudest motorcycle i've ever owned at this point gonna need to repack that muffler but peace of mind gonna tear this thing down knowing everything's at least good to go and what parts i need to confidently rebuild and put back together feeling pretty good about this that was loud daddy yes dear yeah for your food what kind of food do you have do you have any cookie salsa okay you do okay could i have one order of cookie salsa anyone drink more water a water i would love a water yeah okay perfect okay thank you [Music] so so about as big and as heavy as a two-stroke motor can get the heart of the cr500 is out it's a whole lot bigger than the last 125 the piston on this thing looks about the size of my fist which means nothing but big power the thing washed up super nice i mean it almost surprised me and how the plastic brightened up and brought me back maybe some inspiration to maybe go a little bit more on the restoration side and the custom side happy to have eyes on everything and excited that's a clean donor so i can't wait to get tearing this thing down it's all uphill from here so today's the calm before the storm on the cr500 project i have almost everything cleaned and disassembled with the exception of a few parts like the wheels that i'll be taking apart today and i've been waiting on a horde of parts to come in covet has created a massive upturn in the motorcycle industry which has been great for people getting out and riding but for those trying to rebuild a cr500 right now it's a little bit difficult so some of the things like tracking down a pipe and some of the plastics i ended up having to go through ebay just to find one i was worried about most of the parts coming in but i think we have them all at this point tomorrow marks one week until day in the dirt so i have some late nights to put in in true project two-stroke fashion that's how they've always been so i'm looking forward to burning some midnight [Music] oil one thing that gives a lot of people trouble is carburetor maintenance as a whole you know if you're on top of it and you drain your float bowl every time you ride you're never gonna really have to worry about this but this bike's been sitting for quite a few years so i just want to take it apart completely look over everything make sure all the ports passengers and jets are completely clean try to shine it up a little bit make it look like a brand new 94. it's actually a little bit less daunting than people think carb service isn't too difficult the most important part is just starting the job if i drain the float bowl after i ride it and keep on top of it i shouldn't really have to ever do this again [Applause] so this is literally the last new cr500 header i was able to find in the entire nation i checked all the big manufacturers distributors small shops big shops i ended up finding this one at lake elsinore it's kind of exactly what i want i love that factory raw finish you'll notice when you get one of these a lot of them have a little bit of tooling marks on them from the manufacturing process i just start hitting that with some 320 grit sandpaper wet sanding climb the ladder until i get a nice even finish across the board and then hit it with a scotch-brite wheel they do take a little bit more labor than the chrome pipes you can just get them looking that brushed polished look which is what i love so much about these two strokes [Music] so as we're closing in on the final week for the cr500 build i just have a couple errands i need to run i need to stop down to my buddies at la classics and saddlemen to get my radiators and seat taken care of come back to the shop and prep for the build weekend [Music] [Music] [Music] we super exciting day here because finally the cr500 is gonna go back together we spent the last few days working on the cerakote the cerakote is basically a two-part ceramic paint like material that is thinner than powder coat and more durable than paint you start by disassembling the part sandblasting the part degreasing the part baking the part to gas out all the oils then after you spray your cerakote you actually end up baking the part that whole process is what gives you this finish we're gonna see how far we can get into the evening and see if we can get this thing up on wheels and whatever we can't get finished today we'll take care of [Music] tomorrow [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] so i ran into a problem with the cr500 that i haven't really experienced before i wasn't able to get the plastic that i wanted i really wanted to keep the 94 period correct i love the scheme with the neon yellow purple and this flow pink if i want to keep the scheme i'm going to have to restore the plastic the first part of the process is just take a razor blade like this and you'll want to scratch away any of the high points from that point you can hand sand this is 320 get the pad wet from 320 you go to a 400 pad this is a 800 grit pad just like wet sanding so now the finish is still dull but we're finally getting a nice smooth surface we're going to keep climbing the ladder from eight hundred to a thousand thousand to fifteen hundred just put a little bit on the mitt that's some silicone spray spray down the parts that you just did your buffing and polishing on i'm going to let this sit overnight and wipe everything down in the morning [Music] [Music] everything takes longer than expected i spent a little bit longer than i would like to on the wheels but happy with the result and the same goes for the top end the clutch doing all the assembly work all the big things are done wheels are true the engine's built cerakote's done all the metal process finishes are done i couldn't be more stoked on how everything turned out big day tomorrow again but it's a late night so i think we're gonna call it today we'll actually get to see this thing go up on two and start have my buddy alex from patina motorworks coming over to give me a hand we're gonna have this thing all rocking and rolling here in the next few hours [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] so it's midnight i'll put a heat cycle in on it the morning but i just have to wrap with plastics and graphics this thing's ready to rip it's the loudest motorcycle that's ever been in this garage for sure [Music] one last evening in the shop working on the cr500 it's really just a couple little details a heat cycle and plastics and graphics so cruising from this point forward all the major work has been done and i just can't wait to rip this thing two days till day in the dirt [Music] she's probably [Music] look at this thing are you kidding me so cr500 all done it's definitely a relief i almost did every process on this one myself overall stoked came together awesome really really like working on dirt bikes it's much simplified from a lot of the street stuff and i can't wait to rip this thing [Music] [Music] cr 500 friday day of the dirt practice day it's ready i'm excited i've only got to ride it up and down the street so this is really the testing time let's see how she holds together [Music] so that's it for happy hour practice and i gotta say i was a little timid at first but i'm stoked this thing's awesome dude i expected it only to blow my arms off and honestly there's a little bit of meat on the bottom where you can modulate the throttle and it's actually kind of smooth and then there's really a tipping point when it goes from smooth to pinch with your legs and hold on as tight as you can and the glen helen corner where you turn right it's almost impossible not to wheelie up and over the whole thing just in the meat of second or third that's a good feeling i've hired in the helping hand of tyler berman to rip this thing tomorrow which is going to be equally as exciting just to watch that so this thing's going to be perfect for this weekend [Music] all right revolution vintage first race in the morning it's the earliest race of the day but that's what we get with this class excited to rip this thing hot hand off to tyler so rock and roll [Music] that was amazing the best part about that is i didn't even ride it at all i just went out there and i ended up hole shotting so we're two for two on all shots that means that thing's a rocket ship so i just brought the bike in for another round but we think the sprocket bolts might be a little loose because on these two strokes especially at 500 they vibrate so much no matter how much you tighten the bolts they can just vibrate loose my arms feel like they're gonna fall off so much power [Music] this has definitely been an interest in your events wise and i couldn't think of any place that i'd rather be than day in the dirt right now it's birthday weekend to get back out here and stay with the family and friends and just ride some moto it's not like i do this all the time so i cherish it when i get to and to be honest the cr500 was at least at the track maintenance i've ever had to do on one of these project two-stroke builds it made it through three moto's it got two hole shots class win i couldn't be happier with how the cr500 turned out i did the suspension myself on this and i haven't really done that in entirety before so it's a little bit of a shot in the dark honestly i came out here i set the sag it was good to go i was happy with it tyler was happy with it eli was happy with it the track is rough so it's hard to say what perfect would be but it definitely was good enough to put in those motors i knew it would run i knew it would have plenty of power i was just happy that i was able to handle it's definitely a keeper i'll be holding on to this one and bringing it back out here soon you
