so well the title of the video should have been warning enough but indeed today we are going to compare the 44 remington magnum against the 30-30 winchester i hope you'll stick around it's going to be fun and we might learn something [Music] hi george here and welcome to tales from target suite where i'll share my perspective on guns and shooting and we'll spend some time at the range and every now and then we'll reconvene out in my shop back in houston or here at the farm in louisiana where i'll build some fun projects and we'll share an adventure or two that'll make even a grown man smile and yes we are gonna do some comparison today between two great classic cartridges i guess the 44 remington magnum is old enough to be called a classic certainly not it's certainly not as old as the 30 30 winchester but nonetheless it's a great cartridge been around since 1955. and to do that we're going to use two great firearms the model 1892 you've seen this winchester 1892 in other videos i hope you have and the marlin 336 this is our 30 30 winchester and this one belongs to a friend of mine his name is renee and renee was gracious enough to loan me this rifle as well as a couple of others that you'll see in other videos but it's a great marlin jm model from 2007. um that's what we're going to do and we're going to compare these are the rounds we're going to look at the hornady ftx 150 grain we're going to look at the hornady 150 grain interlock round nose bullet we're going to look at the 200 grain the 200 grain xtp hornady bullet hand loads we're going to look at the 240 grain warranty xtp another hand load we're using starline brass in all of our hand loads and then we're going to look at a wide flat nose bullet from here it is a wide flat nose bullet from montana bullet works this is a 260 grain it's kind of a beast it's kind of a beast of a of a bullet it's pretty heavy for the uh heavier than normal for a 44 magnum hard cast very hard cast wide flat nose bullet and so and so that's what we're gonna compare and uh we've done our uh our chronograph work real quick i didn't make you guys suffer through all of that and now we're gonna we're gonna head down to the pond and we're gonna do some terminal uh ballistics work some energy transfer okay well here we are at the energy transfer station and if you've watched my channel you know what we do here we've got a little watermelon here that's gonna it's gonna get some expansion started on the bullets rather crisp watermelon i might say and then we've got some water jugs to hopefully capture bullets if they stay on track and we'll be able to determine penetration we're gonna start with the marlin 336 and 3030 winchester and before i say any more about the bullets let me just say this the 30 30 gets a lot of disrespect online as an inadequate uh deer hunting cartridge and i just want to disagree with that get it out front the 30 30 cartridge is not designed to be a long range cartridge it's a short range cartridge a hundred traditionally 150 yards or so would be a good range with traditional bullets but the 160 grain ftx factory ammo has much improved ballistics and i'll share that with you here in just a little bit and i would say that we would like to have 170 grain round nose bullet but we just could not get one for the video and so the 170 grain is a great uh a great bullet for short range work in the 30 30 winchester so now i've got that out because i know you guys would ask me about the 170 grain i just couldn't get them so let me get set up with the uh we're gonna do the the two hornady uh 30 30 rounds first the 160 grain ftx and then the 150 grain interlock and um let's get shooting okay here we go with the marlin 336 30-30 winchester we didn't capture that ftx bullet it deflected a lot like i said and i think it was a pretty dead center hit on the watermelon so let's shoot the the 150 grain interlock [Music] [Music] okay we got that bullet let me pour it out 150 grain interlock looks like it lost a lot of mass okay let's get the uh let's get the 44 magnum out and we're going to start with the 200 grain xdp and then we're going to go to the 240 grain xtp both hand loads and then we're going to finish with the 260 grain wide flat nose bullet from montana bullet works and that's going to give us a lot more penetration i'm pretty sure but not as much initial energy transfer but i'm looking forward to seeing what these two xtp hollow points do from hornady so let's get going [Music] hmm much okay the 240 or 200 grain xtp uh basically disintegrated let me get it pulled out here so lots of little charge copper very little bit left very little mass left in the bullet so uh i'm not real uh i'm not real thrilled about that one for for uh hunting but we'll talk about that now let's shoot the 240 grain xtp [Music] [Music] okay the 240 grain went through an extra watermelon i mean an extra water jug and let's take a look here okay well that's a pretty good that's a pretty good mushroom and it's a lot heavier than what was left of the 200 grain so the 240 grain was captured in the second water jug and the 200 grain was captured in the first water jug okay let's try that 220 grain hard cast now this one should really penetrate [Music] um okay that guy went through all six water jugs and was caught in the first two and a half gallon water jug really nice and look at that wide flat nose man that's going to be devastating even that very hard cast bullet expanded well here we are if you're if you're still with me i appreciate it um we uh gosh let me take these out so i don't shout at the camera um so you could tell from from the from the ballistics talk that the that the 150 grain ftx bullet is uh has really extended the range of the 30 30 winchester cartridge to at least 200 yards if you've got a rifle that will shoot that accurate and if it's within your skill level and one thing i i wanted to be sure and note is that we're shooting at about 20 yards 15 yards and so so we're going to get a lot more um a lot more deformation and uh rapid expansion at these velocities than especially with the pistol calibers the 240 and 200 grain 44 remington magnum uh loads you know they're they're still booking along at at almost muzzle velocity and so we lost a lot of mass in those bullets and someday maybe soon i should do a um i should do a video on on the loss of mass depending on how close you are to the target so uh you could remind me of that one because the the 200 grain xtp hornady xtp bullet in the 44 magnum basically disintegrated and i don't think that's a realistic um expectation for even a 50 yard or or uh or 7 500 yard shot with a 44 magnum but anyway that's not what we're here for we're here to talk about this guy and um so so we've we have kind of changed our methodologies a lot on the internet a lot of channels have out of respect for what's going on with the with the virus um but i think we've reached a point where we can to start taking some steps back and um and you know one of my channels one of my channels i subscribe to is wolf's prairie outdoors and and historically they um they shoot a pork butt in almost every video and i think he calls it his practical hunting ballistics test and uh and he um he had uh uh not done that out of uh one out of respect and out of the um out of um just the fact that he couldn't get them in the grocery store well i've been paying attention in our grocery stores down here in the south and uh and man we our meat counters have been full for a long time and so i think it's time because you guys have asked for instead of a watermelon what if you shot through a big chunk of meat especially one that's got a bone in it and so that's exactly what i've done and our mystery box contains you guessed it a premium premium pork butt and it's got a big old bone right there in the middle and so i'm going to set this up and we're going to try to shoot through that bone and and we'll see what kind of what kind of expansion and there and i wanted to do the 240 grain xtp bullet because i think that's the most likely candidate for practical for typical hunting scenarios if you're going to be hunting bear where are some the larger game where you really need more penetration then that that 260 grain montana bullet works uh wide flat nose very hard cast bullet would be the cat's meow if i could say that but but if you're going to be hunting whitetail deer then i think the 240 grain xtp is a good candidate and let's just see not only what it does to the pork butt but let's see if it will still penetrate past the first water jug um [Music] [Applause] oh so what's my takeaway from all of this well it's nothing here is scientific and obviously i was as i've said before i was shooting too close and the velocities were too high for the xtxtp bullets and so they should probably shed more um they probably shed more mass than they normally would at a reasonable hunting range of let's say even 50 yards and i was talking to my son this is an hour after i finished filming because uh doing all the work in fact the ants have already started to work here on the on the pork butt but but i was talking to my son and i need to do another video where uh where i do basically the same loads but shoot at a longer distance and uh and so you can expect to see that coming up here uh sometime in the future maybe just a drop-in video mid-week or something but but anyway i would personally like to see what a different performance was because the the 200 grain xtps uh it just almost disintegrated but what did we learn just back to the uh to the 44 magnum versus 30 30 winchester uh conversation um the 30 30 winchester especially with the recent uh recent advent of the ftx uh loads in the lever revolution line from from hornady have carried the 3030 into a realm that the 44 magnum can't compete because the the the ftx if i said didn't say ftx the ftx bullets have much better much better ballistic coefficient and um and it takes the um the 30 30 carbine out to a 250 yard um i think legitimately out to a 250 yard um rifle and so uh and so the 44 magnum it just loses the ballistic coefficient fission is not there even though the bullets are heavier and you get more mass and with the hard cast you get a lot more a lot deeper penetration it's just not going to compete but is it adequate and i think the answer is yes the the 44 magnum is more than adequate for deer again going back to what i said in the beginning of the video as long as you match the 44 magnum with the right hunting uh scenario and so if you're if you're if you stand a chance of taking shots at 200 yards um and i wouldn't pick the 44 magnum but if you're at 150 yards or even yet inside of 150 yards at 100 yards which is what almost all of the shots here on the farm would be would be 100 yards or less then then the 44 magnum if you've got one uh like i do i would not be afraid to hunt with hunt deer with the 44 magnum with the right uh ammo and i think that that hornady ftx i'm sorry that hornady xtp hollow point 240 grain bullet is uh is a great option and uh man uh the the size of that mushroom round that penetrated all the way through the watermelon completely through a second water jug and into the in into the first through the first water jug and into the second water jug that's pretty intense uh performance at close range and so i'm all about the 44 magnum for hunting deer again at short range with the right with the right ammo and so hey i just want to say thank you guys for watching if you've stayed tuned through all of this and are still with me you're definitely a loyal follower and so i appreciate that and uh and i need to do something with this pork butt i think i'm just gonna set it over there in the grass because when i came down here the buzzards were already up there in the pine trees waiting for dinner so uh i'm just gonna pitch it over there and let nature take care of that mess and i'll rake up the rest of it so uh thanks for watching and uh i'll see you guys in the next video so long
