all right honda crv people are always looking for suvs this is a 2003 that the owner bought 15 years ago honda sold millions of them check this one out what does it have on it 225 000 miles we check under the hood got the iv tech 2.4 four-cylinder engine still pretty quiet in all honesty it's quieter than my celica that's 240 000 miles let's face the facts honda knows how to make engines they're probably the number one engine manufacturers on a planet and everybody's looking for an suv this is pretty much their middle one it's bigger than the original 1996 but it's smaller than the 20-21 they keep making them bigger and of course their sales keep going up too the first year they sold cr-s in the united states they sold 66 000 of them last year they sold 384 000 of them they're popular they keep selling them now being an o3 this is a more basic bones car it does have a tachometer a gas gauge dvd player this is a pretty basic car it's got kind of a tartan insert and a door panel comfortable enough seats then we got to the back plenty of room in the back seat then we go to the trunk look at all the space here these things are made for hauling stuff and me personally i like to swing outdoors easy access you're not going to whack your head it's not going to fall down it opens sideways i think it's a great design now i do have to say when i open the hood i can smell oil but it's no big deal all it is is a leaking valve cover gasket 20 powered you can change it yourself in half an hour it's still the original gasket so you can't complain 200 something thousand miles all these years stuff you can easily fix yourself and being a honda everything still works on it the power steering still works the air conditioning still works the power windows still work it doesn't have a sunroof this is a bare bones one but that's actually advantage of an older crv less of the high-tech crap that new ones have high-tech stuff always breaks eventually costs a fortune to fix i don't mind having a rear hatch that you open by hand that doesn't automatically open because it doesn't automatically break when it gets older either and certainly it's an older ass uv but this iv tech honda engine has plenty enough horsepower this thing gets 26 miles a gallon on the highway and sure a brand new honda is rated at 34 miles a gallon on the highway but that's rating and from my experience actually driving them it's more like 32 so the difference isn't that much so i'll take it for a spin sure some goofy things like the automatic power window it goes up and down it doesn't go the whole way automatically anymore you gotta hold your finger on the whole way to make it close but whoopty do it's a minor flaw who cares about that all i care about is this it's not shot up when we put it in reverse look at that it hardly shakes at all now it's reasonably high up in the air so you feel nice and safe still rise pretty good even though it's got the original struts still on it when we step on the gas it's spinning those tires even with an automatic transmission still corners quite well that's the advantage of a smaller suv they handle quite a bit better especially with the honda suspension system and being a wider vehicle you hit those brakes stops pretty fast what's this baby shift you can't even really feel it justin with all these miles that simply little 2.4 honda engine smooth reliable gets good gas mileage and with that transmission still shifting smooth with all that mileage on it people a lot of times whine about honda automatic transmissions but in these crvs especially the older ones i've yet to see any real problems in them now you take a 2021 honda crv doesn't have this reliable 2.4 liter engine it has a 1.5 liter engine it's turbocharged as gasoline direct injection all that extra pressure they're going to wear out faster i don't expect to see a lot of them have 230 000 miles on i'm still going smooth some of the honda 1.5 liter turbocharged engines have had oil dilution problems these old 2.4s they had no problems with oil dilution and here's a strange thing this old engine 03 puts out 160 horsepower where the turbocharged one it's at 180 it's not that different now size-wise it is you got 1.5 liter and a new one versus 2.4 so it's a much smaller engine that puts out a little bit more horsepower but they're gonna wear out faster they don't have plain old steel wheels like this but steel wheels have an advantage you hit something with the steel wheel that gets bent you can get a hammer and smash it back out and drive down the road you hit an alloy wheel it will break and you'll have to buy a very expensive alloy wheel there is an advantage to steel wheels now the funny thing about this crv is the lady brought it over here because their mechanic was saying oh you should probably buy another car i don't know where his head is at but this thing is still in excellent shape no reason to buy another car when this one runs so good i've seen them with 500 000. this isn't even halfway there yet sure the headlights are faded plastic but you can either polish them up like i did with my wife's lexus for a few hundred bucks buy brand new assemblies they look beautiful now considering the price of a new 2021 they started like 26 500 so putting a few hundred bucks cosmetics into this thing sounds like a wise investment to me i'm doing an all module scan now the whole system granted it'll take a while because it's an old car it's an l3 they're a lot slower but it's doing a lot of checking it's been about five minutes and it's still only 26 done but it does a thorough job but it's getting there it's at 94 percent 96 it's almost done no trouble codes no trouble codes three out of four no trouble codes four out of four no trouble codes yes it may be an old vehicle but it shows how well honda made them back in the day 2003 this is still an insanely reliable small suv this is the 2020 toyota trd off road ramp 4. now people have often criticized real for saying oh it's a soccer mom's car you know it's for women in suburbia driving around not this one d r d all-wheel drive sort of off road [ __ ] it's got this nice kind of gun metal gray i like the color got a nice size the obligatory roof racks on it and as you can see it's got the old auto opening back lots of room inside oh look this is my beach umbrella and chair we took it to the beach as you can see by the trd off road it's got rubber mats everywhere even down here when you put the seats forward this is one rav4 that's ready to get dirty but it also has the convenience auto opening in chuck it's got lots of room this rav4 is almost the same size as the original toyota highlander they seem to be making everything bigger and not just here in texas as you can see when we open it up nice utilitarian inside black and red the back seats got lots of room and yeah it's got air conditioning in the back it's got power tank house in the back for your computers and phones and no cheapy backseat comfy got head rest on it nice arm rest if you want if you don't want to sit somebody in the middle and of course it's a toyota so you push the button and it starts right up it's got all the modern conveniences all your sinking stuff and this is set up for sinking great and like any modern suv it's a compromised setup i'm getting 29.1 miles per gallon driving this thing around which is a combination of a decent engine it's a four cylinder 203 horsepower made it to an eight-speed automatic transmission when you're going 60 miles an hour in this thing this thing's only ticking to like 16 1700 rpms so it gets good gas mileage on a highway but it still has decent acceleration because it's got eight speeds as we look under the hood it's got a nice four cylinder engine but it doesn't have a turbo on it so guess what it's going to last a lot longer this baby's got a nice 2.5 liter four it's not a race car but it's set up for the best compromise decent acceleration and good gas mileage for an suv realize they're not cars they're higher up in the air this is the off-road version it's even higher up in the air still gets decent gas mileage and being a toyota i'm sure it's going to be ultra reliable it's brand new this eight-speed automatic transmission toyota is a company that keeps perfecting things the earlier a speeds a lot of people moaned and ground about them but let me tell you in 2020 got rid of the problems that any of the older ones had that they've done software updates and stuff on toyota looks at something and then they perfect it over time and like anything else things often aren't perfect the first go around these a-speeds have been around a while now and they're perfecting now don't do like a lot of american companies do they make some it doesn't work so they scrap it and they try something else take something that works good and make it better you want a vehicle that's reliable decent gas mods decent power 2.5 liters is fine don't turbo charge it and guess what the engine is going to last a lot longer which is the main reason people buy toyotas because they last a long time now this thing obviously has been upgraded it has one thing that i have to say it's a marvel of engineering being the trd off-road it's got off-road specially designed tires it comes with these 18-inch all-terrain trail tires you can see it's an aggressive trend made so it can handle various terrains sand mud whatever but what i found almost impossible to believe is toyota worked in conjunction with them to design this tire i drove it down to galveston took the highway and guess what it's no different noise-wise than driving in any of my cars that have normal tires and even if you don't own or never driven off-road vehicle you've seen them pass you on the road you can hear their tires humming away right baby's quiet how on earth they figure to make a good grippy tire that doesn't make noise is beyond me but these guys know what they're doing and that shocked me i expect to get on the road and while it's off-road so it's going to be noisy it was not noisy it was nice and quiet how they made these tires that aggressive and being quiet some engineers didn't know what the heck they're doing and the same thing goes with the suspension you can see it's lifted up but it rode quite well you take it off-road it can handle a certain amount this isn't a jeep that's going to be climbing up giant rocks and stuff going sideways it's not made for that but you could do a reasonable amount of off-roading and still when you're riding on the road it goes smooth and if you watch me i'm often denigrating engineers for making stupid designs well in case of these toyota engineers hey i'm giving a praise and i don't give praise lately let me tell you my wife's always telling me i'm so cynical about everything well when i see something that actually works kudos to the people who design something that actually does work both ways you can make it harsh driving it around but it still rides smooth on normal roads and with this practically military color on it it doesn't have the connotations of oh it's just a rare ford that women want to drive around in it's got a little oomph to it and as we look inside you can see you can set it for economy for normal for sport shifting and you can set up the all-wheel drive system push for normal or you can turn it and put it on modern sand rocking dirt snow and going downhill now true off-road is my wine because the maximum that it can give the rear wheels is 50 percent of power but like i say this isn't a rock climbing jeep that's going to go up gigantic degrees and climb over giant boulders it doesn't have the clearance for that it's mild off-roading and you're certainly not going to have any problems driving through the snow you live in boston alaska wherever it's certainly going to go through the snows and got the snow set up and i like it that it's got the going down the hill a lot of these things the freewheel going downhill you push the downhill one and it's going to handle better this all-wheel drive system was also thought out by some pretty smart engineers oh you had all this technology when it breaks they're gonna cost you a fortune and then you're gonna get rid of the vehicle because it doesn't work right it's still a toyota from my experience with them they make systems that hold up over time and don't fall apart if this had been a chrysler vehicle i would immediately think yeah how long is that gonna last for that system goes computing the transmission doesn't work anymore that's not something that toyotas are known for they're known for being reliable now one way i tested this out besides driving the beach wife came with me she hates off-road vehicles she said they ride like crap way too high up in here they make a lot of noise she was impressed she really liked this vehicle and that didn't surprise me after i drove it around because hey i drove it around in the city first and it was riding pretty good and on the highway it was pretty quiet so you could satisfy a lot of people here you have a little fun with on the side when your wife just wants something to drive around and that's smooth enough there's a lot of room you got both worlds in one vehicle now i've been fixing cars for 52 years i know for a fact understanding the average american people are probably going to start coming out with putting superchargers on these things to give them more speed they want to more power to them but as this trd off-road stands today in factory form it's pretty much close to the perfect compromise as you can get it's high enough that you can go over certain things but not so high that you feel cumbersome it handles bad it rides bad it's a tendency a rolling over if you go too fast this thing was well thought out now toyota's been making these rad4s for 26 years they've evolved and interestingly enough since it's a toyota product they keep perfecting them as time goes on so you take a look at the 94s much smaller than this much more underpowered they still could run a really long time but they have the idea of improving as time goes on and adding the things people want bluetooth connection that simple that anybody can do took me 30 seconds took up my samsung android so i could play spotify music on it and i didn't even do anything else but then when i'm going down the road it starts popping up hey you got an email you got an email of course me i'm always getting emails i had to turn that off of my phone you got email from and the list just goes on and on and on but if you're into that kind of stuff this thing's all set up for that 30 seconds you got it hooked up and then of course like all of them they remember as soon as you get in the car you got the phone in your pocket it automatically knows what you're doing a very good setup some of these car manufacturers i don't know what it has to do with the software they don't want to pay for rights or something but they are hellacious to hook up phones to this thing boop boop it's on it's got kind of a good mix of it a little aggressive it's got the dual exhaust the off-road sticker on it and the modern technology of these great new antennas do you notice they don't have anything sticking out that's going to grab on trees and stuff i love these new ones kind of funny i changed my old matrix into this too because i got tired of the trees knocking the antenna off and these work just as good you know anything poking out it can tow up to 3 500 pounds this thing has all kinds of things designed into it that you can make use of if you want and if you don't don't put an itch on it this thing isn't a real off-road rock crawler it doesn't have the low range capability of say a jeep i never buy a jeep anyways but i mean those things are made more for insane climbing over rocks this doesn't have that but it's not made for that this is a perfect combination of a rav4 and an off-road vehicle they can use in many situations hey this off-roader even has a nice sunroof on it so if you're looking for something a little bit different in a mild off-road capable vehicle trd maybe something you'd want to think about if you're looking for a vehicle that can last a long time yet still be able to have some fun in got to look at the toyota sequoia now this one came with a little damage but four years ago the owner only paid three thousand dollars for this thing with a hundred thousand miles and that's not even broken in for one of these engines now if you're gonna do a little history toyota started making the sequoias because they wanted something to compete with the likes of the ford excursion as far as i'm concerned this is a much better vehicle the pricing is pretty much the same from a base model to a loaded model sometimes the toyota will be four or five hundred dollars cheaper sometimes the ford is a few thousand dollars more loaded but they're pretty much in the same price range not like the v8 engine like this one has the ultra reliable toyota v8 engine the only downside to this engine it has a rubber timing belt and it's an interference engine so it's a good idea every hundred thousand miles to change the water pump and the timing belt and the tensioner so that it won't have any damage to it back in the day 2001 the set of v8 and realize one thing about these three royal people movers they're all gas hogs don't think you're going to get phenomenal gas much back in the day this and the ford got pretty equivalent gas mods which is you're only going to get in the teens in town that's just how these things are the big excursions the big sequoias most of these of course they're pushing three tons they're almost six thousand pounds and that ratings only empty you fill it up or tow something mild you go right down my experience with those are they're perfectly fine for the first hundred thousand miles generally but then they cost the fortune to repair those engines on the fords for a few miles a gallon i'll take this toyota v8 engine i've seen them with 500 000 miles on them and they're still running strong now as you can see there's plenty of room inside these plenty of room here now there's also plenty of room for all your crap the other seats are hiding back here and they got plenty of towing capacity and if that's not enough for you they got a luggage rack you can throw a lot of stuff on now i'll tell you'll never get lucky like this guy did and pick one of these up for three thousand dollars it was totaled by the insurance company but all they replaced was the headlamp and stuff you can see they didn't fix the bumper who cares it still goes down the road you can fix it if you want but the vehicle itself is still solid as can be because let's face it you're not buying a sequoia to do rock crawling like it was some kind of a jeep these are people movers they're very comfortable inside they got a lot of space you can jump in something like this drive to california you're not going to get a sore neck or sore back now this is a 2001 so it's old well let's listen to the motor let's start it up starts right up just listen to that engine does it shake no the only thing you can hear is a little bit of cam noise which is normal on any overhead cam engine that's 20 years old it doesn't burn a drop of oil let me tell you something with this kind of mileage 20 years old this has got like 156 000 miles on it you find one of those excursions by then they're burning the oil quite a bit a v8 engine doesn't need a turbo they're going to last longer and in the real world they're going to get better gas mileage because the thing about a turbo is theoretically they get better gas mileage because they ram more air into the engine but unfortunately there's opposite forces when you do that what do you do when you have a turbo you drive faster because it's got a turbo so the faster your engine spins the higher the rpms the worse your gas mileage from my experience of my own customers over 53 years is the people with turbocharged cars get the worst gas mileage of anybody because they're driving them so hard and you get worse gas mileage same thing goes for towing you start towing a bunch of weight your gas module's going down you take a v6 engine you're towing a lot it's not going to be getting 25 miles a gallon then and now comes the moment of truth my german scan tool we'll see what shape this thing is in from what no one can hide from the computer so here we go to diagnostics with an enhanced vehicle scan that only has one trouble code bo125a and actually he's had it for quite some time here's the code insufficient coolant temperature for closed loop now the thermistor has already been changed with the toyota part so there's nothing wrong with that but what we're gonna do is we're going to log data here now as you can see we rev it up the oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2 is going up and down oxygen sensor 1 bank 1 is completely dead it's doing nothing now the owner had it replaced bank one sensor one oxygen sensor but it was an aftermarket sensor which i never advise people to do the fix for this thing is probably just putting a toyota denso nippon denso oxygen sensor on the driver's side that's bank one left side of the engine now here's a lesson to be learned don't buy a well-made three-row passenger mover and put cheaper parts on it don't go to a discount auto parts store and buy some after-market oxygen sensor on these you want to stick with the denso or the nippon denser the ones that they came with you don't have to buy them at the dealer you can buy them anywhere toyota doesn't make them they buy them from denso i believe toyota owned some portion of that company but then again toyota owns parts of lots of things the subaru they own lots of things but you don't want to use another brand especially like bosch and you might say scotty use the bosch scan tool they make great scan tools but they don't make oxygen sensors for all cars that work correctly some fords come with bosch work perfectly fine this didn't you don't want to put a bosch sensor on it but on the other hand if you ever come across one of these and you can buy it for three thousand dollars with a hundred and one thousand miles on it and it runs as good as this one does get your money out before somebody else beats you to it so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that bell
