do you feel like your car's lost range have you found yourself on Facebook asking has five different owners groups how your car lost this range well before you send anymore questions like that check out this video wait I'm keep here we're going to show you the easy things you can check to see where your range lends and if there's anything you can do about it now during the colder and hotter seasons you're going to lose range to your heat in your air conditioning but there's other things that we can check and fix ourselves like tires brake drag and even alignment first thing you need to do is know how to measure your efficiency if you're anything like me you're watching this screen right here for probably half of your drive right now we have 218 watt hours per mile which means the same as running two 100 watt light bulbs for an hour there's a few things we're gonna need we need to be going between 30 and 50 miles an hour it needs to be convenient of that you can do this check often and you also need to have a loop that you can start and stop in the same place so the model 3 is rated at 240 watt hours per mile during our test of these lower speeds we should expect somewhere around 210 watt hours from Milan if you're not even getting close to that then I suggest speeding attention to the next steps so since we've got our baseline numbers we can start checking things you should already have a readout of your tire pressures on the dash but it never hurts to double-check the reason the tire pressures are so important is because there's a massive difference between 30 and 50 psi Tesla started off recommending 45 but later lowered it to 42 we had em if you'd like to run a much higher pressure my personal car is at 49 psi I've noticed a really big difference even between 42 and 49 psi now the one thing to consider is the ride quality you wish you'll find gets much harsher at a higher pressure feels like you're driving round basketballs if you don't mind and you like driving as far as you can hump those things up man this is right on here with the highest cool pressure you can run it that's safe tire temperature on a cool day and that's important it's good to check the tire temperature on the trend assuming that it's not so hot Oh though the tires absorbing heat from the ground the any heat here has actually wasted energy and now the reason for this would be your alignment being out if you see your alignment is very toed in the tire tread is actually twisting as the tire rolls forward and that wastes a lot of energy the alignment settings that we should be aiming for or sorry the maximum setting should be 5 millimeters of tow in or out or three sixteenths and that's total don't have an alignment rack use toe plates toe plates are a staple at the racetrack we use these in between sessions to quickly check the toe especially if we're having an instant on the track you'll need a helper but it's very fast way of checking all we do is compare the difference between the front and the rear it's higher more than five millimeters or 3/16 of an inch that's getting to the borderline of what's acceptable and beyond there will start seeing extra range loss remember when your car was new would glide forever that kind of goes away over time if you're in a role mode you may notice when you come to us come to a light on a hill the car will kind of stop and then just start backing up right away if it feels like it's kind of sticking that's brake drink and we should do this test and check the motors brake drag we need to check if your brakes or slowing the car down now to do this test you need to drive around without touching the brakes not even once need to rule to a stop reject don't touch the brakes and we're gonna touch the rotors maybe use the back of your hand and check slowly now if you burned yourself you're an idiot because you press the brakes and you deserve this and maybe you learned your lesson now okay so the idea is that they're cool if you find that they're warm and you never even touch them that means the pads are dragging on the rotors there's a few ways though we can fix this and check it some of the problems we'll find are overheated calipers from the track which reduces the effectiveness of the seals how they pull the pads back another thing is dirty sliders and dirty pads if you're not doing your regular brakes servicing your pads can stick and they won't pull back from the rotor when you're driving you don't have to do all changes all you have to do is rotate the tires and service the brakes it's very simple give you guys an idea the rear brakes on our shop car we're drinking we know it's not different rotors were warm accurate road tests so in the shop took apart the rear brakes swapped out the prototype pads for stock brand new stock pads and in a proper service no different than they would service them at Tesla or anywhere else that you like to take your car once we put it back together and did the road test again we found a 15% improvement in efficiency now keep in mind this is a lower speeds because high speed aerodynamics becomes more of a factor and it's not a really good test so those three factors can add up to a big loss of range he only takes five foot pounds of drag on each rotor to equal of three horsepower loss at highway speed now when this Tesla is using only 18 horsepower highway speeds we're talking about 17% reduction all right so we've got battery power readout on our motor sexy 125 - with this I can show you in real time how much power we're using you with the air conditioning or the heat now one thing to remember when you're using your air conditioning your heat is the fan speed is tied to both the compressor rpm of the air conditioning and also the currents of the heat all right here we go your conditioning level 1 1 kilowatt air conditioning fan speed 5 2 kilowatts air conditioning fan speed 10th for kilowatts alright let's go heat heat level 1 2 kilowatts heat level 5 5 kilowatts you level 10 you see 9 or 10 kilowatts there it's about double the air conditioning so my strategy in the winter to make sure my range is as good as it can be is I'll just keep the windows up and I'll use the seat heaters to stay warm so right now we're at zero kilowatts and we're gonna add in just a little seeker each level and we'll see what happens it's not your showing - I don't have to do this backwards come on one kilowatt give me three bacon three bacon for everyone one kilowatt this is obviously the way to stay warm in winter time if you're trying to go as far as you can all right there you go check this thing isn't that right in the comments let me know if we helped you I would love to hear that if you haven't
