[Music] i'm still not used to there being no plexiglass here and i keep being afraid i'm going to drop things off the side we're going to begin this morning with psalm 150 which is our prayer one of our many prayers of gratitude and as we gather here for the second day of rosh hashanah the second day second full day of our new year we start to sift through those moments that we've had this year and find find the things that there are to praise because we know that we've been through a lot and there's been a lot to fetch about in the last year plus but finding that space and time for joyful gratitude is not only ritually what we're taught to do but it's also therapeutic to sift through all the schmutz in our lives and find what we have to be grateful for because there really is a lot cantor what page are we on page 135 all right [Music] hallelujah [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] um [Music] no [Music] let's turn to page 141 [Music] [Music] [Music] let's turn to page 142 and stand for the bahu [Music] m [Music] source of blessings our eternal god your power fills the cosmos shaping light creating darkness making peace and fashioning all things infinite light is preserved in life's treasure house lights from the darkness said god and it was so in love you bring light to the earth and its creatures your goodness renews the creation each day infinite varied and rich are your works divine artists all of them wrought with wisdom the whole earth is teeming with life awe struck by the universe work of your hands let all life bless you praise you and celebrate the beauty of your life [Music] me let's turn to page 149 and read in the middle of the page that same spring morning the sky sprouted wings and in its wandering westward the breathing sky spoke the traveler's prayer oh god bring us safely across the ocean across the deep waters and in autumn return us to this little country which has heard all our songs [Music] is hello [Music] lay [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] let's all continue together on page 161 sort of a fun reading adapted in 19 from uh mark nasimova who was born in 1960 as you can see on the bottom of the page the israelites walked into the reed sea one foot at a time together what were they thinking about as the water rose up their legs chilling their hearts advancing toward their open mouths we continue to walk here now one foot at a time on our better days forward alone i cannot reach the far shore without drowning somehow i don't go under the person to my right holds me up something i cannot see holds him up blessed is the source of help so often unexpected i step forward the sea is vast 164 [Music] is [Laughter] [Music] is [Music] continue now on 166 with the amidah please stand wow [Music] and my mouth is [Music] i [Music] [Music] hey [Music] hey [Music] m [Music] oh [Music] [Music] um [Music] oh [Music] um [Music] i [Music] [Music] please be seated an introductory thought to an atana tokef written by rabbi aaron pankin of blessed memory former president of the hebrew union college taken from us way too soon our actions help us to live in such a way that when we suffer life's darkest depredations we will always have ways of coping with them our actions may not change the ultimate outcome one iota but they alter our attitude bolster our ability to withstand changes help us handle unavoidableness misfortunes better and see life's value amid chaos and dismay when a ton of tokens begins on 174. last rosh hashanah when we were standing here we were talking about stories of creation and i brought up the phrase anna how long the psalmist uses that phrase in expressing our anguish our loneliness and our sense of abandonment by god rabbi andrea weiss shows us that in psalm 13 the speaker repeats these words ad anna four times in rapid succession how long adonai will you forget me always how long will you hide your face from me how long will i have cares on my mind sorrows in my heart all day how long will my enemy loom over me this phrase that i shared one long year ago still captures the unknown nature of this pandemic how long will covid last how long will we need masks how long will our vaccines protect us how long until we can return to normal in this psalm the poet tells us that god will be with us in the silence just like when queen esther was preparing to tell the king what she needed there was a pause a time to reflect a time to pray my teacher dr rahel adler explains the book of psalms is the record of a truthful relationship between embodied fragile humans who inhabit an unpredictable world and a god who is intermittently present and sometimes terrifyingly absent to its inhabitants these times are difficult our texts call out for god and often god does not respond we are fragile our lives are fragile and yet as rabbi khan said on era of rosh hashanah we are still here in the liturgy for the high holidays we find the words repeated many times god puts us on trial god becomes the judge rabbi jonathan sacks a blessed memory teaches the shofar announces that the court is in session and we are on trial giving an account of our lives but our god is the god of compassion the god of gesed the god of rahamim as we reflect back on this past year we engage in a deep exploration of ourselves and this year more than any other year we need to remember these two words chesed translated as compassion and rahamim as loving kindness and both of these words mean so much more we find khaseed often paired with gimme luth hassadim acts of loving kindness something that goes above and beyond the call of duty this year in the habercorn religious school our students here and at camp daisy and harry stein our campers all studied hessed as part of our educational curriculum we looked together for acts that went above and beyond actions that we took with our family members things that we did when a friend was in need things that we said when it was time to speak up and we did acts of hesed this past year with our eyes with our hands with our hearts and with our feet we called our loved ones we wrote cards to healthcare providers we cheered each other up and we reminded ourselves that we are only human we looked at how these intentional acts of hesed like examples from our hebrew bible could make this world a better place a brighter place we studied the book of ruth learning how even after the death of her husband and her brother-in-law and her father-in-law ruth refused to leave her mother-in-law naomi wherever you go i will go wherever you lodge i will lodge while ruth knew that it would be better and easier for her to return to her own family she knew that naomi had no one else to support her and she stayed more importantly we talked about the intention the motivation and the reasoning behind the actions of a true act of hesed goes beyond just being a good deed dr alan moranis is an anthropologist and a reviver of the moosar movement the part of judaism that's focused on building good moral character and he teaches that an act of hesed is defined as good done for another that goes beyond the dictates of justice for the purpose and to the effect of benefiting that other person the love and intention behind ruth's action to follow naomi and to help take care of her is what truly made her decision an act of hesed in religious school even over zoom we talked about how hesed can inspire hope seeing rabbis like maureen eisendrath and abraham joshua heschel marching side by side with dr martin luther king showed that human beings have the power to change the world we saw videos of historical figures animations from the bible and we look back on our own campstein big trip campers volunteering throughout their time in israel we heard from our modern him and from our teachers about their own experiences volunteering from our students what they like to do with their families we heard about packing boxes of food for the hungry painting run down playgrounds cleaning up beaches visiting children recovering from heart surgery we heard of how they followed up when they got home from israel how these moments helped shape the people they became and the volunteering that they continued to do we learned from them and were inspired by them and their acts of hesed and this year as challenging as it's been has been a year of hesed we've seen people go beyond the call of duty and caring for other people doctors and nurses grocery store employees factory workers restaurant employees and teachers have all helped us to navigate through this world as loved ones were separated from each other and not allowed to visit hospitals medical staff have taken on roles of hesed to helping patients more than normal through difficult moments and being with some patients as they were alone in their final moments of life we've seen examples from around the world of how communities can come together in israel's corona hotels jews and arabs bonded over their shared experience the first day in the corona hotel looked as one might expect people ate their meals and generally spent time with people from their own group but one day a young muslim woman aisha abu shaba noticed this and decided to break the trend she sat with amram and jina maman visibly observant israeli jews in an orth in an interview she later said they were laughing all the time so i chose them over the next few days the group at this corona hotel at the dawn they started building and bonding and crossing unexpected barriers aisha the muslim bedouin woman helped an orthodox jew while he was having an asthma attack she wondered afterward about whether she was even allowed to touch him causing her to ask her new jewish friends this couple about jewish customs and laws and what she can learn from them in ways that she never had thought before this israeli couple provided this young bedouin woman with some life advice and counseling issues thinking about whether or not to become a nurse both admitted that in they had previously had limited interactions with the person of the other group and until that moment and it had opened their eyes respectively to jewish and bedouin culture noam schuster eliazzi an israeli comedian at the same hotel performed a stand-up comedy show in both arabic and hebrew surprising both audiences and poking fun at both societies along the way a few days into her time at the corona hotel she said where's all the problems where's all the prejudice everyone's getting along here in this hotel what's happening here life in this corona hotel provided an escape in which people were treating each other with compassion as they was if they were from their own very group and going above and beyond in maintaining health and sanity during their time together and back at home our students found examples right here in arizona the project called high neighbor is an arizona initiative through the city of phoenix seniors at home sign up to have someone to talk to by phone or through the window melissa elliott one of the leaders involved says it really grew from us learning and experiencing through the pandemic that many seniors are feeling isolated and alone they're not as connected as they were either because family members can't come and visit or they themselves can't get out as much as they were before the pandemic began sometimes they initiate it and other times it might be initiated by someone else a social worker a family member but overall people are receptive to the calls they enjoy having someone call them and they can really build a new relationship with them according to aarp extended isolation due to covid19 could be killing elderly patients in long-term care facilities robin grant patient advocates reports we're hearing from a number of family members that many residents are just losing the will to live geriatric psychiatrist dr maureen nash and dr vimal aga said 17 percent of people 65 and older feel isolated while 26 risk early death due to loneliness also nearly half of all women 65 and older live alone dr nash tells us those statistics highlight what we and geriatrics know loneliness kills loneliness magnifies everything for seniors who may be struggling with a variety of challenges especially during the pandemic odd anna how much longer our psalms of disorientation like psalm 13 thankfully do not end in despair rabbi barry bloch tells us they typically conclude instead with an affirmation of trust and a vow to praise god when help has come while our psalm began crying out for god it ends with a reorientation bringing us to a new place in your hesed do i trust my heart exults in your rescue ashira ladonai let me sing to adonai who healed me this reorientation is not an automatic movement that can be presumed or taken for granted or even predicted nor is it a return to the old form to a return to normalcy as though nothing had happened it is rather all things new when it happens it's always a surprise always a gift of graciousness always an experience that evokes gratitude in the midst of crisis and suffering envisioning that future can be difficult if not impossible but thankfully our tradition guides us as we continue to suffer the effects of 19 and we continue to ask anna how much longer we can look to our tradition of khesed for strength as we recall the courage of our biblical heroes like ruth and esther we look to ourselves to our friends our family members and we all stand arm in arm with those scientists and healers who are working tirelessly with hesed and with rakhim to speedily bring an end to this pandemic next week on yom kippur we call god el-rahum the hanun god filled with compassion and grace let this be our goal for yom kippur to become the best people that we can be to show chesed and even when we have nothing to gain even as we navigate these difficult times through our deeds our words and our actions can yahir its own be this our will and let's uh give a little extra love to jay jason era of rabbi who got us through camp stein this summer who sent a lot of text messages to me and robin and rabbi mason barkin as early or late as two a.m in the morning who handled every single cobit scare every single mental health issue and there were quite a few from our campers and for some reason as we decided like with little babies remember this the crises only happened between 11 pm and 6 a.m the rest of the time was great but since i'm a late uh late you know i'm sort of a late bird early bird what is it i was always up at 1 34 a.m when the text came in but nonetheless uh jason really along with jennifer walker of course got us through with almost 300 campers and 70 staff members and they had a blast big jewish fun uh and jason you worked uh 24 hours a day as it turns out literally so yes on your josh that was really beautiful we are going to be reading from bray sheet and you may be wondering well where is it in my book for some reason they put it in the back of the book so if you'd like to turn to page 330 in your maksarim whether you're here or at home of course if you're at home you want to grab a bible it's the easiest one to find jennifer's one and we are so lucky that we have two past presidents carol reynolds gayle bear who uh have been for quite a few years chanting for us on second day roche which secretly is our favorite service of the year and um cantor's been working with them throughout the summer and so um we're going to ask them to also chant the blessings for their aliyot as well and be honored and uh who's first gayle and michael why don't you come up for the aliyah if you don't mind that way you can be a tag team and i always like to point out although you're welcome to tell the story would you like to tell the story about the odd would you like me to okay michael every year i like to just give a shout out to this very special yacht michael why don't you just share a little bit about it um this yacht has a lot of meaning because that was great my grandfather saved this from their synagogue in greedle germany a small village outside of frankfurt and on kristallnacht just before he went and took the torah and the yacht and it was not found in their house it was hidden away but the mobs demanded the torah but this had fallen off and was the only thing left and um there you go and we use it each of my kids i was barmestered with it and each of my kids used it as well and apropos rabbit mason barkin's drosh yesterday about all of the items that were destroyed even from the ashes of that destruction there were things that were saved and this is so sacred to you and your family but it is to us because you're part of our family so there you have it we're going to first bless the torah and then again we are on page 330 or genesis chapter one [Music] [Music] [Music] on [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] abdel [Music] [Music] [Music] mr the holy one who brought blessings to abraham call uh carol reynolds both for our aliyah and for reading torah god willing next year we'll have full lists of people coming up for aliyahs and opening the ark and do all that stuff we're trying to contain it and limit it um this year [Music] [Music] [Music] i [Music] [Music] [Music] she [Music] [Music] a blessing for carol and her family including all of the newest grandchildren it seems like there's a new grandchild every few months and so that's a good thing is there another one coming yeah there was one that just came about three months ago right that but i'm just saying you're like a thank you can you imagine having grandchildren during coven and then not being able to see them oh my god i mean the jewish grandfathers are probably like oh it was a schlopp anyway but the grandmothers can you imagine to be a jewish grandma and not to see your grandbaby but carol elise and dan have been able to pull off at least one visit if not more and uh we're so happy for them we're going to take a moment now to ask for um well not ask for anything just sing a little bit lift the torah dress the torah and then cantor will be uh leading us and sharing with us the half tour for today please stand as the tour is lifted to be redressed [Music] foreign [Music] [Laughter] 255 cantor will be uh chanting for second day rosh the um hufftora can be found on page 255. we're looking get to it it's actually it's the calling of the people back it's the hope for the future so it'll be on 257. i pointed that the hop tour was on 255 but i'm going to be reading them from 257 verse 17. or verse 16 where it says keep your voice from weeping it is this consolation that everyone will be returned and that the people of israel will be eternal so let's join in the blessings over the [Music] my [Music] [Music] oh [Music] from [Applause] [Music] uh just a couple of it uh well actually more than a couple of announcements but it's important that you look at our website and uh maybe even talk to josh goodman after services we just sent you so many emails in the last couple of weeks many of which were really about protocols and and signups for making sure we had the proper amount of reservations and all of that stuff there's so many programs because when high holy days begin around labor day weekend we're done by the end of september with simple torah so we really start everything in october and um september's filled with holy days but also programs but we do a lot of services too if you haven't noticed so i think it counted one year it's something like 18 services in 22 days and there's stuff going on so when we hit the end of september beginning of october boy oh boy we really will have a lot going on so please please check the website check the uh the newsletter that josh just sent out two days three days ago and uh the weekly uh news blast as well but i do want to thank josh stephanie thank you so much for coming with us both down to uh and josh and stephanie for coming with us both to the church and back here um and and i know that you agreed that the the system at the church is a little bit more complicated than ours perhaps um i don't know if you guys know but there's an entire like television studio quality production room that you didn't even see it's got a double pane mirror in the back of the room and if you open the door and look in there i don't know there's like a million dollars worth of like television studio more than that quality stuff so you learned that adapted our service to that thank you so much for everything and jackie we've been together a long time and every year gets better every year gets better and thank you and cantor for the music uh you got a great teammate of course but um thank you for picking just you always pick the most perfect music for these days and there's more to come so this shabbat friday night's normal shabbat shiva 6 15 i think i believe jason and i are on yes me and jay very exciting um saturday morning is not a regular service and that we're not going to be using our prayer books or reading from torah but we give people opportunities to spend 10 plus minutes or so in front of the open ark we open the ark here and in the roth family chapel you go online you make a reservation some of us like just the opportunity to feel like we get to talk to god directly during the asera immediate during the 10 days of repentance it was a very successful last year we had lots of people um come and and pray but the good news is cantor and rabbi mason barkin and i at least two or if not all of us will be here and then and some people ask us to come in and recite a misha barack for them or to bless their family or to just pray with them and it's it's really powerful so please feel free to go on the website there are plenty of spots available for this shabbat shiva saturday morning we'll be doing it from about 10 till noon and then sunday morning don't forget at 9 00 a.m is our vote our annual memorial service at cbi cemetery i realize some of our members may be going to one at the mount sinai cemetery or at green acres cemetery and that's you got to go where your families are but for those of you who are like me who have loved ones buried in in my case san francisco uh we just sort of use our cemetery which has been around for 90 years as home base for all of us to be able to go and visit our loved ones uh which is a very very old tradition on this shabbat in i'm sorry on the sunday in between rosh hashanah and yom kippur one of our real wonderful parts of our centennial torah project is what we're calling the centennial scholars series and so these are scholars who will be coming in writers speakers throughout the year and it's part of what we do as jews we not only write a torah but we also have to live by its words and sometimes it's helpful to live by its words by learning with a scholar our first centennial scholar robert mason barkin had mentioned this the other night will be sarah hurwitz who wrote a book called here all along finding meaning spirituality and deeper connection to life in judaism after finally choosing to look there sarah horwitz's book will first be discussed with the cbi book club uh at on do you have a date pick for the book club october it'll be some time before november sometime before my guess is sometime mid-october we'll have the book club read the book now sarah hurwitz was michelle obama's head speech writer and then after she finished in the white house she be she really became reconnected to her judaism and so she wrote this wonderful book so she will be here on november uh 17th at 7 p.m so you get to discuss the book first with rabbi mason barkin and book club and then we get to gather here hopefully we'll be able to even have more people to learn and hear from sarah she will be our first centennial scholar of the year we want to remind everybody having i know a lot of you attended the first volunteer fair which was last sunday or sorry sunday sunday ago our second one will be on september 26th so right out of the high holy days 25 opportunities for committees and programs short-term committees long-term committees events programs projects but we really need all hands on deck for the centennial year because we've got the scholars we've got the torah project we'll have a gala at some point cantor is going to be doing a magnificent collaborative as he always does a musical program celebrating our congregation's jewish music but particularly we're going to announce it next week with more specifics all of these we need we're really all hands on deck we need lots and lots and lots of volunteers and i know a lot of you during covid were at home cleaning closets so while you're cleaning the closet you could probably sit on a committee make some phone calls send out an email or two we'll keep you plenty busy robin roeder is here to talk if you have any questions and again please join us on sunday the 26th 10 a.m to 2 p.m gail gail martin the fabulous gayle is in the back she has all the information for that as well finally i wanted to remind everyone who here has children and grandchildren that camp daisy and harry stein summer 2022 registration is wide open and we are really really looking forward to another summer of big jewish fun in the pines more i mean the announcements were long i'm sitting down and letting rabbi mason barking take over because you know i could go on well in that case i'm excited about sarah hurwitz too i'm excited that at book club we get to brainstorm all the questions we want to ask her in person because usually we say i wish i could ask the author that and this time we actually can let's turn to page 292 which is where we'll find the mourner's kaddish we already said allenu when we uh did the great eleno before the first blast of shofar calls so if there's someone you are remembering this morning i know holidays can be a particularly poignant time when we use the recipes of our loved ones or notice that empty seat around our table that we're so used to having at these festive joyful times those memories are even more present there's someone you're thinking of this morning whose memory is with you someone who has died in recent days or someone who died in years past whose spirit is strong with you i invite you to share their name either out loud in a moment or on youtube or facebook if you're joining us virtually we also remember those who died defending the state of israel and all those who died in the shoah who have no one left to say kaddish for them let's stand as we recite these words together [Music] in a prayer for peace [Music] is [Music] a [Music] is [Music] um is [Music] may you be inscribed and sealed for good in the book of life amen we i believe there's some challah out there so let's uh send you off with a little mozi [Music] shout out [Music] you
