thanks for tuning in you're watching dirt bike Channel I'm your host Kyle brother sent today worth talking about 250 versus 300 stick around [Music] speaking of awesome 252 strokes how would you like to win this 2018 KTM 250 xew TPI fuel-injected beauty this is my bike and of giving this bike away shortly after May 15th if you're watching this before May 15th the 2018 you still have time to go over the dirt dirt bike channel comm and enter to win this bike I've got all the details over there but don't delay because you've only got a limited amount of time so go check that out right now I get this email probably weekly now and the email goes like this hey Kyle I see that you used to ride 300s and now you're old and now I see you kind of focusing on the 250s is that because the you don't like the 300s anymore and and what what should I get so it's a it's a complex subject but I want to kind of boil it down for you guys first off let me just say that I love the 302 strokes I've had a number of them I probably had five or six different 300s from different manufacturers KTM versus beta versus sure Coe and the 300 two-stroke is an amazing dirt bike it's an amazing motor but then I also wanted to branch out and try the 250s I've had some buddies in the past that rode the 250s and I wanted to do a little bit of kind of comparison between the two so the first time that I did a back-to-back comparison was in 2017 I had a 2017 KTM 300 XC and I also bought a 2017 KTM 250 XC and rode them back-to-back a number of times and I learned some things and that was that the differences between a 250 and a 300 are extremely subtle the 250 has all the same power that a 300 has generally speaking it's just that that power comes on the 300 the power comes at a lower rpm range lower in the mid range and the 300 has more low-end torque so that's good for the technical riding if you're just going to be doing technical writing so here's my here's my recommendation boil it down if the if most of your riding is technical slow tight single track and I would suggest to you the 300cc is a probably a better fit for you on the other hand if most of your writing is going to be more wide open terrain with just some of the really really technical stuff I think you're probably going to be better off and have more fun with the 250 now why is that one of the things that I've learned over the past year and a half is that the 250s seem to Rev a little bit quicker a little bit freer the motor they feel a little bit lighter it's just really really subtle but the way that that motor revs is just a it's just a hair quicker and hair freer on the 250 as opposed to the 300 and so if you're the type of rider that likes quick revving bikes and likes to be more on the pipe and ride a little bit more aggressive I would say to you the 250 is going to be a better fit for you they just they just seem to be more fun when you push them I think the 250 rewards you a little bit more for staying in a gear a little bit longer on on two fifties and the 302 strokes at least these modern ones they love to be shifted early and shifted often the 300 loves to be shifted early even more so you keep the 300 down lower in the RPM range so and I'm not saying that you can't go fast neither one they both scream and they both do the things very well but the 300 when you're going through some of that technical technical stuff you don't need to give as much you don't need to cover the clutch as much on a 300 because it's got more low-end torque and it will just kind of pull through things and tractor through things when you're doing a hill climb or a little trickery tricky section or something whereas on the 250s that I've been riding you need to use a you need to cover the clutch a little bit more in order to keep the bike from stalling in those really low rpm situations because it doesn't have quite as much low-end torque does that mean that you that a 250 can't do technical stuff absolutely not that the 250 can do anything the 300 can do it's just is the rider me or you adept enough and skilful enough to be able to compensate for a little bit lower a little bit lower overall torque down on the low end can we compensate that by by covering the clutch a little bit and just giving little little stabs of clutch or little inputs there and if you can if you can do that then you can ride the 250 and you can do the all the exact same things that a 250 you know the 300 can do you can do it on the 250 when I went on the Graham Jarvis ride in December there was a whole host of bikes I think it was the only guy on a 250 two-stroke everyone else is on 300 that's the other fun thing about a 250 is if you're riding a 250 you're gonna be a little bit different than everyone else because everyone thinks that the 300 is better because it's it's it's 300 it's a bigger motor so obviously they think it's got more power and it's going to be better not necessarily the case there they're both extremely good and just nuance to differences between the two the other thing I'll say about a 250 is they're easier to find a lot of times because the 300 is so popular the 3 the 250 is kind of like one of the best-kept secrets out there it's many times easier to find a left over 250 like if you like right now this I'm shooting this video in late April of 2018 you would have a lot easier time finding a left over 2018 because our new model the new models of 2019 s are gonna be coming out like within just a few weeks or a couple months here you'd have a much easier time finding a left over 250 XC a 2018 250 versus a 2018 300 and so you can get a better deal on that a lot of times you can find a better deal on the 250 so my advice to you is again if most of your riding is gonna be white more wide open terrain go with the 250 if the if the terrain that you're gonna encounter is more closed off and gonna be a little bit slower speeds and more technical go with the 300 and that's just generally if you want a bike that's gonna reward you a little bit more for being on the pipe and paying more attention get the 250 if you want a bike that allows you to be a little bit more lazy and lackadaisical with your shifting and with your clutching get the 300 and then don't look back honestly you can't wrong with either one I will be reviewing and owning more 300s in the future I will be owning and reviewing more two fifties in the future I love them they are awesome again this is just speaking about two-stroke dirt bikes and so that kind of gives you my some of my thoughts and if you ask me to pick between which is my favorite it's literally like asking me to pick which is my favourite kid I don't have a favorite kid and I don't have a favorite between the 250 and the 300 but right now the 300 or the 250 is just kind of speaking to my soul a little bit and so that's what I'm riding these I want my primary bike I want us to be the bike that is gonna give me the most fun and since I'm able to because of this opportunity I'm able to count a ride a bunch of different bikes I got the 250 XE is my primary bike so hopefully that helps you guys understand a little bit where I'm coming from and gives you a better insight into what you should be doing as far as 250 versus 300 thanks guys we'll catch you in the next video
