25 Different Overland Vehicle Builds & Camping Setups

this morning i am waking up with a cup of coffee on the north rim of the grand canyon it is so spectacular and behind me are 25 everyday folks overland vehicles camping setups trailers and today in this video what i'm going to do is take you around and show you all their amazing setups stay tuned [Music] welcome to trail recon i'm brad and what a way to wake up this morning a couple cups of coffee the colorado river the north rim of the grand canyon and a whole bunch of amazing folks here behind me we are here for our second annual e3 overland event and these members have come out with me yesterday we camped right here on the rim of the grand canyon and then here in a little bit we're gonna head back in the trail a little while and go meet up with some more e3 overland members and just have an amazing weekend now to get out here is about a 70 mile trek and so it was a good long day on the trail yesterday but we camped here had an amazing time and of course the scenery is spectacular what i wanted to do today in this video is walk around camp and show you all the average day people's setups i think that's really important to take a look at what folks are using and what's working for them it's not a bunch of manufacturers these are just people that are using their gear every day whether it's just basic ground tents trailers or they've just got their rig all tricked out i think you guys will really enjoy this now we're gonna do this as a one take so it's just gonna be grabbing the camera walking around and checking it all out so let's get started all right everybody well here is the view that we woke up with this morning the colorado river right along through the grand canyon people have been setting up their chairs having breakfast and coffee just at the overlook i mean you could not ask for a more epic camp spot so what i'm gonna do now is just uh let's just walk around and check out everybody's rigs and camp setups they're all unique and different and folks are just you know they're having breakfast they're packing up so we'll see them along the way so here's a privacy tent with a very nicely built jeep gladiator it's got a rack on the back it's got a little solar back there because we're gonna be out here for several days so you want to keep some power going on the gladiator and then [Applause] nice little camp set up here stove a ground tent just average day folks having their camp setups now got a turtle back trailer over here and this is their first maiden voyage is what they told me in the turtleback trailer very nice setup lots of storage roof tint on top [Applause] i like i like the rear of this trailer especially the little spice rack that's very cool of course they're making some french pressed coffee got their stove cooking on their scottle style grill and they've also got solar we're going to be out here for you know five days total out here in arizona so everybody's got to keep things charged up for this trip they got a very nice orange jeep rubicon wrangler got some bigger tires got a nice roof rack on there kc lights on the front a couple little friends hanging out on the fender that's a great jeep and you're gonna see that as we're doing this walk around there's a lot of folks that have trailers out here and you know trailers have become a really good solution for taking all the weight off your vehicle and now you got your sleeping quarters you got a bathroom you got your kitchen all that stuff is now on the trailer it just makes it very convenient especially for what we're going to be doing which is a little exploring this weekend so they can drop their trailer take their jeep and head off and explore so it's very very good option and again we've got another trailer over there good morning buddy they've also got the turtleback trailer and they are running a very nice very nice ford raptor and the trail coming out here i mentioned it was 70 miles long but it was not hard or difficult but but it was pretty rocky there were a couple ruts check out all the lights on front of this ford raptor boy you could light up light up the trail i guess nobody's business with all those lights and of course the ford raptor is extremely capable vehicle in the back here he's got two spare tires he's got the wii boost so you can have a little data connection while you're out and about get some more that's a pretty cool little setup right there some more lights on the back just so we're gonna peek in the back here just check out his storage nice little storage setup back there extra fuel which we will probably need some extra fuel this trip putting in a lot of miles out here and then there is there's their camp set up so they've got and look i mean come on you got the chairs got a little propane fire pit and you've got that view right there it really doesn't get much better than this when it comes to nice camping sites he's got these little goal zero lanterns which are very cool gives you a little extra night light when you're walking around they're not terribly bright but they're powered by solar we'll walk around here and peek at his kitchen they just wrapped up pretty hearty breakfast nice little table tailgate table right there and again they've got a ton of solar good morning everybody good morning loving life out here all right let's check out let's check out this nissan this nissan is bone stock with just slightly larger tires and he made it out here no problem he said he hits his bump stops a couple times but you know you don't need you don't need a heavily built vehicle to go out and have a great adventure something like this which is a great daily driver it's a nice little truck you can come out and have an awesome adventure and find yourself in a location just like this so he's got it's got a winch installed in the front so a little custom winch bumper there got a light bar and a roof rack rooftop tent it's got a privacy tent which is nice because we don't have a whole lot of trees out here so it's nice having having the privacy tit nice rack on the back propane tank he's got his trash roo hanging off the side some casey highlights some amber lights for when it was dusty it was pretty dusty a couple times yesterday oh hey it's got a nice decal back there rocha every car and then look just just a very simple camp set up you got a stove a little chair and a little tail perfect okay let's make our way let's make our way over here this is where a couple of the folks that we're ground tanning are because the ground was a little better over there but check out let me just check out these views over here got the all the different colorations and the rocks got the green on the ground we there was quite a bit of rain out here recently so things were pretty green i would imagine a few days there might even be a little desert bloom out here now this is a this is a great family out here i got an opportunity to just sit down hang out with them and they are just loving life uh again keeping things keeping things as simple as possible now these folks are hikers by trade and so they're taking their experience of being hikers and applying it to the way that they're over landing in their jeep which is keeping weight down so a ground tent you know simple awning chairs a privacy tent not putting a massive amount of weight on their vehicle and yet they still have all their needs met for their family which is perfect this is a great little build out back here he's got a nice fridge it's got a little drawer system back there that looks like a do it yourself table did it himself he says he built that himself look at paper towel holder solution everybody's always asking me about paper towel holder solutions there you go there there's one right there for you harbor freight he says a great jeep extra fuel extra water nice roof rack on the top inside of his jeep he's got his navigation in there some comms looks like a 67 design setup some mild star patty going to tires nice little jk all right and over here we have got the gladiator and these folks joined us last year uh for our event they brought their little two-door jeep and now this year they kind of upgraded a little bit to this big old gladiator got a smittybilt rooftop tent up there they've got all their family friends down here there's a cat around here somewhere because there's the cat box so they did travel with the cat box but the cat's cool because he just loves being outside they got a arb fridge in the back got some fuel back there he's got this nice uh soft topper that helps to keep dust down you know when you have a big when you have a big rack on the back of your truck if it's open like that dust can be a challenge and so at least that keeps it down a little bit [Applause] nice little i like this kitchen table so this thing folds up pretty small but it gives you a lot of room to work and cook bacon yeah and hit some coffee so it was a good morning but it's a nice gladiator okay so let's talk about aquila the name so i had to i had to ask what why is the jeep named akilia and apparently there were two uh female gladiators in history and that was the name of one of them so there you go and then we got their privacy tent over there and we'll swing around over here and so we've got a very nice cheap jk rubicon with a roof rack this gentleman and his wife love to wheel this thing but check out the taj mahal over here this is the taj mahal of titch you are not wanting for room with this tent this thing has got space for days and you know if you're going to base camp for a while what a great setup very nice tent you know it reminds me of when i was a kid when we go camping with the family and have a big old canvas tent this one's definitely a little more lightweight and a little more practical but you got you got all kinds of room in there they're just wrapping up and here's the back of their back of their jk got a nice storage system nice fridge a little shelf in there oh yeah oh yeah that's a great setup homemade mate he said over here we have a two-door so here's one that you don't see over landing very often and that is a two-door jeep we got a two-door jl the challenge comes with a two-door is you don't have a lot of space and you don't have a lot of towing capacity and so figuring out how to make it all work with a two-door well he's found out a great solution he went with a very lightweight compact trailer it's a very nice trailer he's got a very nice large roof tent up there so you can fit a couple people up there he's got lots of extra fuel which you know if a two-door has a smaller fuel tank you need that extra fuel so this is a smittybilt trailer and the great thing about the smittybilt trailers is they come pretty basic so you can outfit it kind of the way you want so he's done some some mods to it here mounting some propane the box very nice setup got some jack stands in there makes it easy to level it out does have a little bit of gear back here of course [Applause] there's some nice stickers shout out marco and then of course my favorite you know i have this on all my jeeps that's the tailgater table that'll make your life super simple so a great two-door setup okay we still got more seat guys let's walk over here this is where the brave camped out on closer to the rim even my wife was like are you sure i want to make sure we have the parking brake on we'll start we'll start over here with this nice gladiator gladiator's got the winch up front got some kc lights and then they have set up a privacy tent over here as well i guess i should mention there is a ari topper on there which that makes it nice you're not gonna get a whole lot of dust and stuff in there and then they've got the opus trailer what i like about the opus trailer is they're super low profile so this this blows up this is actually inflatable and then it all collapses and it's very flat and you get a really large space for camping and you get some nice some nice amenities there's a fridge down there you got all kinds of power they've got hot water they've got a heater they've got a sink they've got a stove it's a great option again we're seeing a lot of trailers out here because there is just some practicality about it now you have to tow the trailer but there you go all right so we've got our setup over here so regina and i are in the truck and the camper of this trip of course i made lots and lots and lots of coffee this morning no it's a hot mess my wife's a home we're gonna look then we're gonna look away she made they were delicious i can tell you that the aroma at camp was awesome but we my son and his girlfriend are with us and they are in staying in the patriot campers trailer and then we've got the jk or the jl over here i gotta remember what jeep i'm driving these days but you might notice it looks a little different than the last time you saw it so the jl diesel is getting ready to go to sema and we put a three and a half inch teraflex lift on there and we changed out the wheels and tires for just a little more bling so it looks a little different but it's been good it's been a great drive out here we drove about seven hours to get here and then about again it was over 70 miles on the trail and it drove great over here we've got another jk overland setup and i am a huge fan of these chairs one they are very comfortable but two they just kind of have that earthy look to them which i really like and he says what he likes about those chairs most is they fold up super easy and super fast so on the back here he has got he's got the aev fuel caddy so that makes carrying fuel very nice because it's integrated into your tire carrier you can see he's got a shovel back there high lift jack he's got a light and he's got a trash roof so that's taking full advantage of that spare tire and then he does have one of those tailgater tables but i like i like this utility syst the utility canvas system this is from let's see overland outfitters shout out to them i might have to check that out that's pretty slick that keeps things very nice and organized in the back of his jk he's got a full goose gear system he's got a little stove here he's got a fridge he's got the vector got the vector rack with some storage up there it looks like he's got a pure sine wave inverter so he's got plenty of power he's got a a nice propane tank and he's got some uh rotopax on the side which i really like the rotopax that he's done here with a little valve super nice and then we've got nice big rooftop tent with an awning it's a great looking jeep little some teraflex wheels and some ko2's some 35s it's a great setup right there those tires are awesome for trips like this out in the desert long drives there's a snorkel up there arv a aev snorkel nice looking bumper a couple lights up there a winch that's a great rig okay we're making our way over guys so here is here is a silver jail looks like it's running on 37 ridge grapplers on some bead locks plenty of lights and a winch up front we did hit a little bit of mud yesterday so we got we got a little muddy out here thankfully we got here when we did because just two days prior it was really nasty on the trail and then back here he's got i love the i love these straps for the tire carriers because you can mount water or fuel up there great ghosted is the name of the jeep and then they are they're just doing the ground tent thing keeping it simple keeping it lightweight it's the way to go all right another jk setup camo hiker i had to ask that's camo hiker i know what y'all thinking stop it thanks for asking so he has got a nice uh little table up at the top for storage and then a front runner system down here plenty of goodies got a tailgate table and then down here is his kitchen set up nice stove with a table intense little scottle chair did i mention we have a nice view i mean come on sorry i can't stop showing you the view i'm they're filming me filming so over here is uh he's got an awning again with a nice little covered kitchen area a place to hang out front runner rooftop tent looks like a front runner rack up there as well i like the decals that he's done on the side of his jeep here you can see though sorry about the shadows we are doing this as a one take so there's no editing on this gal a little topo on the hood very cool i love i love the gobi color uh jks all right there's a full size ram 2500 and these folks these folks have an interesting story so they were out here with the trailer and on the way uh to the ranch where we're gonna be going back to the leaf springs on their trailer broke and so we had to leave their trailer behind but you know what positive attitude the right kind of spirit and uh and by the help of some great folks they were able to still join us here and they slept in this really nice size gazelle tent and if you've never seen these gazelle tents they open and close very quickly but they had a nice cot in there to sleep on and we made it all work and so they were still able to come out here and join us and we're going to see about getting their leaf springs fixed but you know what you got to have a positive attitude when when you have challenges it's super important so here is a the fort f250 also a full size i'm not sure what lift kit this is but he's got some fox bds shocks in there i'm assuming that's a bds suspension got a big old beefy bumper on the front looks like some 295 70 r14 tires nice rack on the top this is a very well-built f-250 you can see he's also got the wii boost up there got a little data signal open rack in the back some storage he's got the eye camper camper rooftop tent and then lots of gear back here power tank some fuel a little shower road shower so he's got a set up over here for some water i saw him washing dishes and stuff this morning with that and then he's got this very nice flat surface on his tailgate to uh to cook on and use this however he needs to another full size and these folks told me that they transitioned from their jeep to this ram rebel which is really nice i mean first of all i love the red but it's got that bumper with integrated winch light bar some rigid lights on there and then he's got some 35 inch tires you know the ram rebel is a great truck they're fun to drive and they're not they're not going to break the bank too much and they're towing a trailer so this one is from mission overland oh let's just check out let's check out the bedrock sorry we're doing one take right so we're not editing uh this is pretty cool i like how it opens on both sides it gives you access to the entire entire bed if you need to but then you still have a nice mounting surface on the basement that's closed so this trailer here he's got some extracts and it's kind of a it's kind of a pop-up so he's got a little pop-up up here gives you more headroom inside and then this back part here opens up and so that's your access door in there and then around here is your kitchen so you've got an outside kitchen which i really like you know we have the camper and we actually prefer cooking outside you know it's nice to be in and out of the weather but uh but it's nice to be able to just cook outside oh he opened the door for us let's take a look here so inside batwing inside there is a nice sleeping platform looks like he's got a little cassette toilet plenty of storage and tons of headroom in there yep and then you can see that door just be careful going in and out that's that sits a little low for a tall guy like me but it's a great trailer all right another jeep jl roof nest tent i had one of those tents for a while there's a great tent they set up and break down extremely fast again with uh with the strap and the rotopax taking advantage of that spare tire it's extremely important to use all your space in a jeep you can see this one's packed up pretty well but they've got some tape tables out here a tailgate table there's a fridge in there and just some simple craftsman storage boxes you don't need to go crazy you don't need to spend a million dollars to store your gear co2 co2 is nice and of course they're festive very festive [Laughter] we got plenty of plenty of pets here at the tr at the event it's great light bar in the front he's got the roto packs mounted at the top and then again with the privacy tent nice nice jail okay we got another nissan you nissan fans guys are gonna love this video so this is a uh very clean white truck got a nice big bumper on the front with a winch some lights roof rack and awning [Applause] he's got a nice uh are topper on the back but look at the solar he's got mounted on the top lots of solar power and then he's towing towing a trailer again trailers are a great option because you can just attach and keep on going so he's got some firewood back here he's got his fuel cans great thing about these is they're easy to level out with these little corner jacks propane some mud and then the back of the trailer the inside of the trailer is where you sleep but in the back here you've got this nice storage area and you got just everything you need very cool setup all right this trailer is a a very unique one this is the first time i've actually seen one of these up close i really like the modularity of this thing so this fridge slides out gives you easy access to that fridge and then you then you have access to this whole table there's a shelving system this is a pretty new trailer looks like they have their red vision arc redarc system in there some plenty of storage back here and again outside sink and cooking top propane on the outside and then plenty of plenty of sleeping space in there more storage out here and then he is towing this guy with his silver jeep he's got he's got a roof rack up there rhino rack roof rack got some max tracks a shovel fuel cans everything you need for a long adventure got the kc highlights pro 6 light bar this is a uh looks like a fish bone bumper on the front it's got his comms got a bat wing on him some toyo tires i'll tell you we were in you could tell this this is like lava this rock is really tough and a toyo tire they're pretty tough they'll handle they'll handle going on stuff like this great setup all right couple more to go guys so we've got this uh beautiful green jl the mojito i wish they still made this color it's an awesome awesome color just stands out so well got a massive fridge i don't know what size this dometic fridge is but that's that's a big boy right there uh it looks like he's got a american adventure labs rack up there these kind of pay match very cool tailgate table pull back a little bit here and not fall off the green king so he's got the trail rack system so he can carry a little fuel on the side he's got an awning he's got the go fsr rooftop 10 up there kc highlights pro 6 and he's got some a-pillar lights mounted there i don't know what those fenders are but those are pretty slick i like those nice winches stock winch and bumper it's a great thing about the rubicon oh check out check out these so this is something i've been looking at so he's got these hood vents here and this one is this the intake yeah so he's got these you can get these as a vent or an event in an intake and i am actually considering doing something like that for the diesel to kind of help with cooling but they don't have it for the diesel yet but uh we may be doing something like that that's a great solution if you're having any heating issues and i know you get a little extra power with that uh with that intake all right we're getting to the end guys we're getting to the end here's a nice orange jeep rubicon not a crazy build because it doesn't have to be because he's towing a trailer a roof rack another one of those trail rack storage so it's a that's a good solution if you want to store fuel you can't keep it on the roof rack or you don't have you don't want to store it inside and then he's got this hiker trailer i'm god i'm close to the grand canyon i'm trying not to fall off here so the hiker trailer is uh it's nice it's very simple it allows you to you know you kind of modify it the way you want nice little setup let me tell you these guys had the best view they really really had the best view are you tired of looking at this view yet i'm not okay on the side here another propane tank got some water and then there's another gazelle tent these are popular tint again they set up and break down very quickly they don't take up a whole lot of space gives you a lot of room inside you can almost stand up in there and change very practical and here is something you don't see very often and that is a hummer h3t a truck hummer truck so there's not a lot of aftermarket support for these but he's done really well on outfitting this so he's got a rack on there he's got a little swing out tire carrier i believe that's the rigged with the table he's got a stove got some propane up there oh sorry guys propane up there he's got a little uh power management system up here he's charging right now with solar it's a great little truck all right it's the last one guys it's a nice toyota tacoma not crazy outfitted but a nice truck and when you throw a trailer on it it makes it an amazing overland vehicle so it looks like he's got the decked out system back here so he could store some stuff you can mount his bike and then he's got looks like what's called an xtr trailer just pop around the back here and see what his setup looks like so oh yeah lots of room to store all your gear a great setup so there you go y'all now the plan is to pack up and we're gonna head in a little bit uh down the trail about 12 miles in on the trail where we're gonna be camping for the next couple days doing some horseback riding some atv riding some skeet shooting and some exploring of this amazing desert area this is such a blast you know we've had such a great time out here if you are not an e3 overland
