2023 Toyota Crown Review // The Toyota They Ever Made

you're watching throttle house I'm Thomas and I'm James and this is a Toyota crown what's the Toyota Crown I have no idea [Music] this is a Toyota crown and if you're like us you're probably wondering what the heck is a Toyota Crown yeah because not a lot of people in North America know what a Toyota Crown is or even what the word Crown means in the car world and we've dug into it we've done a lot of research and it turns out Toyota don't really know what the word Crown means either picture this it's 1955 in Japan and you're in the back of your dad's new car it's a shiny new Crown Japan's newest up-market passenger vehicle it's cute it's luxurious you're comfy fast forward you're a teenager now your parents have raised you well so you've got a job helping a local businessman transport his Wares to do that you're using a utility pickup truck that car is called a crown foreign a few years go by your employer has paid you well it's 1973. Marvin Gaye releases let's get it on it's time to impress so enough with the crowds you've got your own money now and it's time to spend it on a two-door sports coupe that car a crown [Music] but you drive too fast you get pulled over the police car a crown on your way home you see a government official go by he's being driven in it's a crown but thanks to the coupe and mostly Marvin Gaye before you know it you're having kids and the coupe there were no more does it it's time to leave that Crown life behind and get a station wagon the answer a crown [Music] [Music] so business is good life is good you keep switching up your car from Crown to Crown to Crown to Crown and occasionally your business takes you to Hong Kong you get driven around in a taxi that Taxi it's a crown but a deal falls through the stress is too much inevitably you die your family transports you to the funeral in a hearse which you've guessed it is also a crown so the name Crown apparently meant everything but Hey listen Toyota made other models that don't subscribe to the notion that everything is a crown yeah like the Corolla great little car oh no except that means little Crown in Latin uh oh the Camry right we all love that nope that means Crown in Japanese um oh at least they have the Corona right that's a beer with the logo of a crown on it yeah no Corona means Crown in most of the languages right so that means we have the little crown the crown the crown and the crown Crown Crown Crown Crown Crown crown Crown Crown Crown Crown Crown crowd oh crap all right so what is this this is a crown an actual crown an actual crown believe it or not yes um we haven't actually had a crown in North America for about 50 years and well yeah you know they actually did try to bring the crown here and it didn't go so well they actually uh planned a big kind of endurance run from Los Angeles all the way to New York City with the original Crown in the 50s which had a how big was the engine 1.5 a 1.5 liter four-cylinder and they didn't even make it to Las Vegas because it couldn't keep up with highway traffic yeah didn't have a good start but here we are yeah 17 years later and now this is actually quite quick we're in the Platinum trim so this is the hybrid Max engine all right right so the trims below there's a 2.5 liter right this 2.4 liter wow but turbocharged the other ones are naturally aspirated and they're all all-wheel drive and they all have a Hybrid engine except this one is constantly sending at least 30 percent of the power to the rear wheels which you can see on that little diagram it's giving me a constant diagram of what's Happening even more impressive than 340 horsepower 400 pound-feet of torque it's gonna put down and it's actually quite quick you know it's quick it is an even more impressive than all of that I would say is how much this feels like the nicest lexuses that exist yeah the cabin is nicely isolated like this it is this is it feels like a grown-up Prius that went to University and got a PhD a pretty huge degree of refinement isolation well it's interesting as well because this system trim is strange we it gets its own transmission a six-speed wet clutch instead of the icvts at the ones below get right it gets its own engine option okay and it gets its own suspension this is adaptive suspension and I've been living with this in Toronto and the very few cars do well in Toronto and this ride is softly sprung and you can feel the weight but it kind of has like the same thing as the Hyundai ionic 5 has that sort of weighted soft ride it works really really well you could feel the mass it feels expensive expensive yeah there you go there are driving modes actually um I just click here and we can go from Eco to comfort to normal to sport s to sport S Plus sport S Plus ready yeah selected yeah yeah it's not why is there why is there a sport S Plus yeah it's like buying braces for your goldfish it's just not necessary this is a thousand pounds heavier than a Camry on the same platform and you can feel the weight it pounds heavier yeah yes you can in the corners it's not an agile thing but to be listen I I would I was about to say the sentence it's not trying to be but then there's a sport S Plus mode yeah it's a sport s and then sport S Plus maybe it's all about straight line speed how about a zero to 60. we got the thing yeah okay okay here we go ready here we go oh it's a tire squeal hey 5.6 5.6 5.6 seconds you know what that's not slow actually that's pretty good that's that cheap pretty quick it doesn't feel slow either it's also very smooth the calibration of everything when it comes to the throttle the the hybrid action the engine is all really nicely done yeah it's not sporty but it's satisfying it is there's a satisfaction to it and hybrid yeah fuel economy yeah it's okay I think it's pretty good okay so this does like 30 miles to the gallon or seven liters something 100 kilometers I haven't I haven't been able to beat that in this this is a prototype disclaimer okay but like I've been getting like 10.8 liters per 100 kilometers to average which if you get the lower trims yeah get it improves quite a bit Yeah but if you get the lower trims you don't get the two-tone paint no you don't do you want that okay okay oh it's chilly yeah it's weird yeah I can't believe how many crowns and types of crowns they have been I know and how many Toyotas mean the word crowd everything is what about what about bz4x is that mean crown no that's just a dumb name all right so the two-tone yeah I'd rather see in a solid color I think yeah people are mixed people admit some people like it I don't know it's not doing it any favors honestly right now it looks like the new 7 Series but with a better front end yeah true the weirdest thing and we've been robbed a bit because a new Crown is very much a crown there's an SUV a station wagon a fancy sedan yeah and then this we get this one thing we get just this and and we even found that it's not actually that useful like it's you know it's high up but the trunk opening isn't very big no it's not fantastic the ground clearance isn't actually that much more than a Camry right although I did accidentally go into a huge pothole yesterday yeah and it just went like it did it so it clears the ground enough yeah ah what why don't we get the badges I don't know my favorite thing about my century that's the first time I mentioned it I'm very proud 20 minutes I'm very proud of you is that it has its own badge because it's from a special Factory yes the crown even in Japan has a majestic Crown badge on the front yeah and you know what's worse right it's not even on the inside either a bit cold out there it's a bit cold out there yeah Canada doing it's kind of the thing it's doing Canada well this is Toyota doing its Lexus thing yeah this is actually very lexisey isn't it yeah yeah it's it's cushy and buttons feel like this little thing feels like yeah there's an expensiveness to it yeah well this is the kind of done this like gold bronze thing here yeah and it's even on the volume dial yeah I see that yeah it's got a panoramic sunroof which is panoramic's a strong word they're like you they're they're fast and loose with the word panoramic yeah it doesn't open and there's a huge bar here yeah and then there's this little roof just for the driver yeah it's also starts very far back I don't know gauge cluster that we're just nitpicking because the car is great by the way if you notice um that is feels kind of old Toyota e it doesn't feel like next gen doesn't feel special doesn't feel sharp I don't like that tone of blue I'm being picky we need to get some lunch into Thomas yeah but yeah look Toyota badge where's my crown badge where is the crown literal Crown it's so cool that well it's funny because this is supposed to be this is supposed to have a crown to let us know that this is the upmarket luxury Toyota which is what historically it has been all the way through well it's been everything it's been everything we know but like it is the luxury Toyota which is funny because there is a Toyota crown Jester well there was there was which is the luxury crown so there was a luxury version of a Toyota panoramic frown means nothing means nothing this is Crown Aladdin yeah um we got this little eyesight oh that's grandma what's Grandma that's grandma is it Grandma yeah I've not been getting on with that no so a lot of cars have that it's for adaptive cruise it's a help the car knows what you're doing by watching your eyes with that yes except this car is about to get stitches because it's a snitch all right I've been driving that the moment I look away anywhere it says drive it unattentive I know please look back and then not joking actually said this I slouched for a moment and it said sit up sit up I bet you we want to replicate I bet we won't be able to replicate that for b-roll but like that is so funny car thanks to Grandma and her cookies the adaptive cruise on this and Lane keep assist is very good is it yeah good we also have other Tech going on we've got heated and ventilated seats in the front we've got heated seats in the back we've got wireless charging wireless car plane one thing we don't have is a head-up display which the Avalon which no longer is with us had and we have an 11 speaker JBL sound system that is crowded crap yeah it's not good in fact every JBL Toyota I don't know why they've married JBL so hard and sorry JBL if you're watching um and uh it's just it feels like there's no base no there is no it doesn't feel like there's no base there is no base it's not good in the corona cross that we're just in it's not good in the gr Corolla it's weird so many speakers and none of them are good yes however big part of luxury is comfort and the seats are great seats are great seats are good in the back they're very squishy they're soft yeah but in Toyota Lexus fashion they're not that rich in Headroom like if you remember the ls also that's right yeah yeah so in the back Harrison who is six foot six doesn't fit just straight up doesn't fit I fit very comfortably as a low 510 but uh but yeah and then quality of materials as well this is technically a prototype vehicle so apparently maybe some of them will be different so we won't fully comment on them but they're quite nice as it is I don't have an issue with them yeah every time I try and describe this car whether I've been living with it or driving it I end up you using words like Pleasant and lovely and nice yep it is all of those things it is you know honestly after driving it um I I can't get over the the mess that is the the history of the Toyota Crown I think it's I think it's fascinating and fantastic but as a return to North America yes this is quite a nice vehicle it is and they may say it has a sporty design and that it's launch ready and they may have given it Sport Plus and paddle shifters that don't work very well at all the transmission's real slow transmission's slow the the four-cylinder sound when you're really on it it's not good it's not great but just don't drive it like that it's not for that they're just doing that to try and attract other buyers I think but like just enjoy it for what it is that is a supremely comfortable and very nice Toyota yeah foreign [Music] ended up using the word nice as well and nice is good at the end of a long work day sometimes a warm cup of tea and a biscuit is just the remedy you need the crown captures that Essence it's not perfect for 60 Grand we expected a slightly better trunk situation one that's a little bit more intuitive and assisted and doesn't make me need to do that couple that with the strange raised sedan styling and it's not likely to steal North American Toyota fans away from their fancy Highlanders also for all its Legacy Vibes the sound system is a far cry from the mark levinsons that they get however the plush seats the powertrain the satisfying driving Dynamics and the storied history that is the Toyota Crown altogether make this an incredibly Charming vehicle one that we wish Lee into its Heritage a little more with a crown badge or two but I suppose a little online order from Japan could potentially solve that so whether you see the crown as just a slightly more affordable Lexus or you see it as the ability to own the longest running passenger car nameplate affixed to any Toyota vehicle ever you'll probably find a home in the new Crown thanks
