2023 is the worst year for mass shootings in America for at least a decade more incidents more injuries and more deaths a mass shooting is one where four or more people are killed or injured 10 years ago there were 90 mass shootings in the first five months of the year so far this year 263. so why is this happening well for gun Advocates there's a simple explanation mental illness and hatred pulls the trigger but it's a lot more complicated than that the majority of active shooter incidents involve people without a mental health diagnosis one study found that 9 in 10 people who carried out mass casualty attacks had personal issues in the lead-up to that event things like job loss divorce or health complications but these issues affect people the world over so what makes America different well it's the guns almost half of all civilian-owned firearms in the world are found here in America that's nearly 400 million guns and for reference there's only about 330 million people who live in America
