so this is it the genesis gv60 yep what do you think of the front end well [Music] [Laughter] you're watching throttle house i'm thomas and i'm james and this is the genesis gv60 it is and i think they made a mistake marketing this in that sao paulo yellow thing right because standing here in person in white it's actually not a bad looking car i don't agree anyway what is cool though is that this is very was based on the same platform as the eb6 and the ionic five yeah right so if you come over here and look at it from the side it is very much the same kind of like sportback yeah they've that's the it's because this is a sporty car this is the genesis you know luxury sport thing what is it athletic elegance elevated yes never forget elevator cosmetic elegance elevator but this is the the performance package right so it's the more expensive one it's got these 21 121 inch aggressive wheels the non-performance advanced how does the wheels look like they almost look like like a bug's web has like grown in unique ways and they're really unique wheels i'll give them that they're directional so people have i get upset about that but i don't care i think it looks good it's got some cool design stuff there's a clam shell hood so for a clean front look although it doesn't it doesn't have the genesis even though it has the dual headlamps yes it doesn't have the normal genesis crest that we've kind of grown to know and love it's it's southern it's gone down south okay yeah um so this how much range 378 kilometers right yeah and how much range aspect right now does it have left 150 right okay so normally what we would do is we would take the car out on the back roads and we'd rip it around and we get some really cool shots of it driving by a lot but we're pretty confident that if we do that we're not going to have enough range for you to get home correct yes so instead we're going to go to a charger now the cool thing is is that this is the same platform as the ev6 and the ion 5 which means it has a 16 minute 18 18 minute 10 to 80 charge time yes assuming you're using a 350 kilowatt fast charger yes so we should go to one of those yeah we're going to spice it up we're going to cut through the valleys here through the glaciers the rivers there's none of those we don't have to crash we'll pay the the malamutes on the horses to get through and then we might hit the 401. yeah a bit of highway okay so i'm going to use this uh this electrify canada app well-rounded um right and we're going to search i can actually filter by the 350 kilowatt chargers right so right here 350 kilowatt so we'll find the nearest one which is uh zooming out zooming out there it is yeah how many are there in southern ontario four four four okay so we're good we'll just go we'll go to the we'll go to this this one it's the nearest one yeah um at the toronto premium outlets shout out for them sounds like a nice place sounds terrible all right do you want to drive yeah go on then okay check this out oh pretty nice key right yeah you wear that key like a suit um actually it's funny i don't even need this to get in the car there's a camera on the b-pillar that reads my face like an iphone and it lets me in that is that is pretty clever yeah innovative innovative what if there's a nicholas cage though he's ready to take your face off and then where is his face okay we'll do like we'll do like a nicolas cage shoulder check okay he is everywhere he is i see him when i close my eyes and then he's flowing here and then and then we'll go in and then even better i don't even need this to start the car there's a fingerprint button there is a fingerprint yeah so i can get in with my face and start the car with my finger which means this welcome to the future i don't even need it yeah that's gone forever now it doesn't matter you can get in oh true yeah because you've set up the you've set up the face stuff i'll go find the key yeah okay this is actually a really exciting car because not only is it the triplet of the ev6 and the iron x5 two cars which we actually loved it's a genesis we've loved all of genesis models and also this is their first ev and they want to become completely eevee however being in the performance package this costs 79 000 canadian which puts it right in line with things like the audi q4 e-tron sportback and this has range that competes with the audi that i just mentioned but it's not model y level so there's a lot of pressure all right let's go okay sport mode sport mode push the boost button you get 10 seconds and you get more horsepower 429 becomes 483 500 well 446. just launch it whoa four-wheel burnout yeah okay oh that is not a slow car not at all so that's four seconds to 60 and that's with the increase in torque and horsepower that comes with pressing the boost mode so it's a 10 second boost mode yep so it's like this car is a grower not a shower you know it's it's making hulk angry for those few seconds just for those few seconds however even for that price which we hope is more than a kia ev6 gt the kia has more power and hit 60 in half a second less so this isn't the fastest of the bunch the kia outperforms this as far as straight line speed it's interesting why i think that's because the genesis is supposed to be more elegant than athletic whereas the key is straight up yes i mean comfort is the absolute priority we're going to be on a uh highway in a second yes but right now i have driven this and the throttle response is good the power is linear and it makes there's three different noises you can choose from yeah so they're in here so you can choose to go to that menu either through a normal setup but if you're expelling it happy and excited you can go to the 3d setup whoa what does that mean see inside okay vehicle settings vehicle settings active sound design advanced settings all right so we've got this is futuristic g engine g engine oh okay and then the e motor i believe is a synthesized version of these electric motors so we'll click that and go high pitch it's high pitched it's like that's my preference i think you know you like that one it's a little bit subtle it feels the most natural yes so not to add pressure to this journey but i'm 132 kilometers now yeah after that going down real quick i can switch it so if i switch it to eco yeah it gives me a few more 139 and we've got the air con going which if it's anything like the ironic five means we also have less range yeah but this is not an option there must be aircon speaking of that i'm going to put my cooled seats on with what would you call that a very nice physical physical button physical button so i stand before you today thomas yes i think that this fixes any interior gripes the ionic 5 and the eb6 from an interior perspective minus passenger space harrison our sound engineer is six foot six yes doesn't squeeze into the ev6 which this is most similar to and in this he's also crammed there's a lot of leg room there's not enough headroom interesting and i quote every time he sits in this car no matter what's seeing it he's in he'll die yeah he's out he's he's predicted every crash that he does every shoot death unlikely to be true because they're obsessed about safety on these cars and yeah they've got all the things i'm not sure that they obsess about reliability though do they well you got good warranties you got good warranties and stuff i just i would like to point out that that button over there is making some unfortunate noises your drive mode button well yeah um this guy here has malfunctioned once the spinny wheel to select the gears which i will say is really cool it started you can't put it down for that okay and then this speaker here so yeah it's not a speaker um it is it is a great place you want that part too it's a great place to hide paraphernalia okay what would you put in there like basil oregano yeah any of those yeah and no one will know but the thing is i don't mind that because the reason they've done that is because on this side it's the wing mirror moving thing so that's a design choice to fake a speaker right it's not the worst thing it's you know there's more crimes committed in the auto industry than that and i don't know that no no more of that but this car has the 17 speaker banging ollison system yeah which is good and that would be an 18th and i think that i don't i don't i don't like even numbers so that's right all right so i'm just going to hit boost again yeah according to the makes a big difference it's quick and but you feel the weight there's like this kind of huge like it pitches up yeah it pitches yeah right and then and then does it roll as well it rolls and it doesn't correct itself it's kind of like no because this weighs what 600 pounds more than the gv70 which isn't as much as i thought it would be i thought it'd be a thousand pounds no but 600 pounds is a lot of pounds oh yeah okay and this house so this has drift mode i can't believe that's so stupid it does not need a drift mode for god's sake yeah which we're not going to try on the on the public roads no but what we might do that would be illegal um oh oops hmm drifting understeer drifting understeer i'm trying to but that that squealing words sound different it is theater it's excitement theater how can i mean the problem with these so it's crashing i don't know yeah i mean look first there's a sports car right we've got speed sports clicky things lotus just have that feel broken 100 uh crazy spoiler on the back fixed fixed it's fixed yeah that's that's frogs warn me so when you think of it like that you i don't know if they should have done that they could have they could have gone more elegant than athletic but what if they elevated all of those and just made it athletic also elegance elevated yeah credit to genesis they did what they could with an almost 5 000 pound vehicle four seconds to 60 might not compete with the tesla model y performance but it's still quicker in a straight line than most cars on the road but athletic sure the same way elephants are really good at pole vaulting but the ride is nice and for non-sporty driving the body is controlled yeah it's not a sports car was it drift mode necessary no but where the elegance part comes in is how well it crushes commuting miles all right merging under the highway 103.103 kilometers left 33 are you in sport mode though i'm an eco now okay we'll put it in sport mode that allows you to do quite easy calculation 96 kilometers range because 100 kilometers 33 percent that's 300 kilometers about three o'clock so we've been driving so as it is it doesn't really hit its slated it's on a 33 degree sunny day 33 degrees any day and we are literally going downhill right okay so this is this is a car that they are very proud of the insulation that they've done here yes i'm going to switch us into eco eco we're on the highway now okay we're eco warriors honestly tire noise is the only thing i'm hearing yeah it's it's pretty insulated they've well first of all not only is there all the normal insulation physical insulation they've got yes but they also uses the bang olufsen sound system apart from the paraphernalia active noise cancer so your active noise cancellation yes oh there's a little bit of wind noise there hearing that so yeah a little bit of wind noise yeah maybe hitting the wing mirror but really really quite settled pretty yeah i can't really complain honestly like having not driven a model y in a while i would say this is more insulated speaking of settled though the ride does waft in eco mode quite a lot the the ionic five wafts but the ev6 doesn't waft this is yeah this is a more gentle cushy version than the ev6 right the ev6 is a little bit sharper all right so sitting here now we've been in these seats for a while seat comfort listen i have any problem with the seat comfort the seat well i guess this is part of seat comfort now that i say it they're a bit hard yeah but ergonomically but i think that they're good you potentially need to be worn in a bit yeah i'll give them that it has the has the panoramic sunroof which the ev6 doesn't get the ionic five gets and head room good head and good hebrew ideally i wanted this to be the perfect combination for the extra money of an ev6 and an ionic fighter with better feeding materials but it isn't it almost it almost is so i think this into the cabin is fixed it's perfect it's done everything i wanted from both yes instead of the big white bezel on the ioniq five we've got this curved curved screen with a small bezel also this is a pretty this is a nice infotainment it's it's like it's upgraded from the hyundai stuff yes right yeah really get on with this one even this is smarter it doesn't look because it doesn't look as economy as the other two no we've got the real buttons here as you mentioned and the climate control is for the most part quite easy to work out yeah they don't really have any much more to say about that glove compartment really funky it's a drawer how cool is that you can fit a whole laptop in there yeah i like that steering wheel don't like the look of it um but it does have the app adaptive doesn't bother me and you can have some more fun with the interior options this is black but you can get blue with yellow striping yes which i don't know i've grown up learning the blue and yellow ryanair ikea yeah i associate blue and yellow with cheapness so but it actually works i've seen the pictures of it it looks great right so i think from an interior perspective this is a bit of a win i just wish that the rear seats i wish it was the hatchback look with the ionic fibers okay can i say something though as we are getting and the boot similar by the way to the ev6 is it yes it looks yeah it's yeah right similar enough enough okay how do i get back to my my range information ev seems like that okay it literally is called eb okay can i say something we're heading right now to one of the very few 350 kilowatt chargers which isn't required you could go to a level two no you could but if you want to charge quickly and get on with your day you need the 350 kilowatt this is this is an important point because right now especially in ontario and in many other places the charging infrastructure is not keeping up with the rate that manufacturers are pumping out new evs right it isn't so certainly not keeping up with demand for those evs no and the prices of evs are not getting any lower especially because just very recently lithium and cobalt have gone up in price quite a lot okay all right it's thomas the economist this is my economy lesson for today the the problem that i have right now is that evs are still and this is i'm using this term loosely enthusiast cars people that unless you have a very specific use case where you can charge at home and the whole thing buying an ev right now you are making a sacrifice in the same way that i sacrificed when i bought my m2 because i'm an enthusiast right you and i just got quotes to get charges installed at our houses how much were they thousands how many thousands i think mine was about three thousand you're no yours was six mine was three that's all right and we have very normal houses and i just got a new panel installed in my house last year so normal houses that's how much it costs to install the panel and there's not that much access to actual fast charging for non-tesla cars right now if you buy an ev at least in ontario it's an enthusiast choice and that's totally okay i don't i think it's putting faith in the system to come you know you're early i don't think it's enthusiastic it's putting faith in the system to be built around you fair enough the m2 is never going to get easier no but it's gonna be dope forever [Laughter] okay well i consider the gv60 to be quite dope too but to be fair as spec it's almost twenty thousand dollars more than the gt line ev6 we drove that is a serious price premium for a not so different experience and the genesis has 60 kilometers less epa range than the kia 31 of which we spent just traveling to a fast charger and for us and especially thomas apparently it's equally important that the on-the-go fast charging experience doesn't mess with the elegance of it all okay toronto's premium outlet they look real premium to me yes i'm going to pull up my electrify canada app and it's going to lead me right to the charger i also i like the switch gear by the way for going back into reverse and drive yeah well it's like the old dials and you've got spaces for your fingers whereas the ionic is a click here and the the analog is clicked there and then the ev6 is this it's the same thing it just doesn't rotate no but it hasn't got the bits for your fingers okay oh i think i might be seeing some ev chargers right now there is a whole eight chargers here okay pulling in to 350. no one man should have all that power but we are going to okay all right all right 350 juicker all right that's pretty easy that's cool all right we plug in first push the button no i'll do it yeah well ow all right so i could just tap my card here right like there's a visa no you need you probably need in the well maybe oh yeah you can you could be really nice stop there you can oh i'm trying now it's disconnecting the vehicle okay did you turn the car off does it have to happen okay pay by credit credit okay oh no that's perfect okay you can ask you can ask for better than that this is going really well so far yes well okay it has to the office it's not idiot proof is it processing try another car another car all right all right approved oh it was crazy that was pretty good usually to make an account oh usually usually initiating charging is that actually how easy it is because that would be brilliant such a naysayer such as i never said i never said i was a naysayer i just want to see it actually is the 18 wait so we've got 30 percent 30 16. so if it does 18 minutes 10 to 80 minutes we should be 12 minutes 12 minutes roughly right 12 minutes roughly okay remove the card do i have to yeah remove the cut okay i'm just i'm petrified of these things because they always malfunction i don't want to do anything to piss it off okay it's saying 14 minutes 14 minutes to 80 oh that's so cool that's so cool i think we just sold electricity we solved evs so thomas now we need one of these literally everywhere all right speeding up it was doing 50 now 150. now 200. okay so it's settling at about 220. 220 kilowatts kilowatts okay okay and 13 minutes to 80 percent i can get session updates by text so i could go get ice cream here are the losers of today who thomas for being a naysayer and the gb60 for being too expensive so not 12 minutes and seven dollars later the gv60 hit its targeted charge another benefit to being a hyundai kia ev triplet except being the genesis the gv60 does it all with a little bit more panache even though the ionic 5 does take the win in front and rear seat comfort and actually for the extra things the genesis does have it charges you quite a bit for the privilege and really it takes jumping up to the next full echelon to the likes of the bmw ix or the lucid air to see the first significant jump in range and quality but if you aren't interested in spending six figures on a high-tech beaver then it's likely that the cheaper ionic 5 and ev6 which are already wonderful will do everything you need
