sad that jack's helmet is not as small as the one in the previous gr86 video

A very glowing review from the Gooseman. It seems like the only bad thing that they had to say about it was the poor-sounding engine and the awful fake engine noise. It's great to see that this car can finally outrun a Miata and an S2k. This review does not help my impatience.

Tracking my stock ND2 highlighted the same issues that geeseman brings up, the weight transfer is so excessive that you have to be very slow with your inputs to avoid upsetting the car on the limit. Hopefully a set of Ohlins can keep the excellent ride comfort while banishing the body roll.

Still no regrets with my choice, but man seeing all that space in the GR86 with the seats down makes me real jelly.

I really can't wait for this to come out. I'm in no position to purchase a new car at the moment, but the sheer fact that this is available now as an option is just amazing.

It's so easy to buy into the "the manuals are dead" and the "they don't make em how they used too" rhetoric, but lots of awesome cars have come out recently. What an amazing time to be an enthusiast

I can't wait to purchase one. I'm leaning towards the BRZ but I'd have to see both in person. I imagine they're going to be sold out for a while.

Wow, 209 WHP compared to 162 of the previous gen on the same dyno? That's impressive. More than advertised, actually.

Honestly that white pearl paint looks great, hopefully it’s similar to the Lexus white which is like the best iteration of pearl white I’ve ever seen. im Assuming the paint is specific to Toyota vs Subaru, right? Meaning they don’t share

One of the best videos Goose has made to date, not counting his mini-documentaries - those are another level. Told me everything I needed to know to decide what's right for me, barring actually doing a test drive

The fact that they’re comparing a brand new car to the almost 20 year old s2000 shows how good the s2000 was.

[Music] [Music] [Music] me the brand new gr86 this is a full comprehensive video so if you don't want to know details you better turn this off we're going to cover the engineering changes to this car we're going to show you what it makes on a dyno plot compared to the old car and we're going to do some basic comparisons to other vehicles like the nd2 miata and the s2000 of old but let's start with the interior space shall we there is a lot of conversation about how this car isn't particularly about the numbers it's about the feelings and that sounds like something a loser would say that sounds like something barney taught me when i was five years old but the truth is that's exactly what makes this car interesting and exciting the fact that you can have a connected experience and there are minimal bs gimmicks in here the driving position the steering wheel the dashboard layout it is all purposeful for one thing driving that's correct you feel that lotusness in this car in large part because there's not too many vehicles like this left on the planet that is about that purity and connection to driving at an affordable cost so what have they done all matte textures here when you go to the premium trim level there's alcantara on the doors and the seats and basically everything is just tarted up enough for modern sensibilities you get automatic climate control so you don't have to fiddle with any knobs everything is physical in here including oh that parking brake that still has cables you don't have an electronic parking brake module you have a manual transmission which feel is largely similar but improved mechanically and basically to me the way this car looks is a little bit like the lexus interior in terms of dashboard layout but with the toyota and subaru combination of old school charm now i'm not going to cover things like the audio test and all that in here but let's get right into the meat and potatoes the mechanical changes to the 86 and brz [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what are we under mark to something that looks almost identical to the previous one that i spent about six billion hours underneath yeah this is the underbody of the toyota variant of the subaru brz subaru this is the gr86 this is the 2022 model despite this looking largely the same underneath there are some very substantial changes to body structure engine exterior modifications for improved aerodynamics and suspension tuning i'm also going to walk through some of the differences between the brz and the gr86 as well in the future we will be getting a brz so stay tuned to that let's start with the exterior what did they change frontal rear bumpers are all new the materials on the body structure of this car both have been changed so you have an aluminum hood aluminum fenders which you did not have aluminum fenders in the previous vehicle and you have an aluminum roof you also have arrow treatments so you have functional arrow over the front and rear wheel wells which is supposed to not so much increase downforce but reduce turbulence at higher speeds so it should be a more aerodynamic vehicle overall it also should help with brake cooling as well from my understanding when we had our conversation with the subaru engineers and not toyota engineers the body structure this is what is it called mark it's like subaru's global yeah so subaru is a they're an architecture for all their new cars is subaru global architecture that's not this however from a manufacturing process or manufacturing standpoint they take some of the technologies from that architecture and put it in this body because this is more of a one-off it's not shared with not completely shared with any other subaru product so they've taken the welding process they've taken the high strength steel process the structural adhesive process and changed the rings in the back so all those manufacturing improvements have been applied to this architecture of this platform as well and it leads to something very substantial a 50 increase in torsional rigidity and 60 increase in uh i believe bending bending yeah so it's it's it's very very substantial i'm not going to say you're going to notice it right away when you're behind the wheel but they did do some pretty large changes also not to mention they've also changed the steering rack in this car yeah so the it's still an in-column eps unit so the motor is in the steering column so steering wheel and then the linkage there the motor's still there they've just moved it farther down they've changed the control logic of that and then they've put the control unit right next to the motor they haven't separated it out yeah it's just like basically a lot of these things are just minor changes manufacturing improvements efficiencies in manufacturing and what does it translate to well mostly a car that is better all the way around and so you set the bar a little bit higher in terms of performance so now you have a better platform to build on yes when it comes to the suspension this is where the cars start to get a little bit different between the subaru and the gr86 which isn't that much different than the previous car because they were different from the start as well but what do they do so in the front the damper tuning and shock tuning is much different in the gr86 it's softer in the front stiffer in the rear they've also only they only have a steel knuckle in the gr86 where in the brz you get a aluminum knuckle which is pretty interesting yeah we asked about that because the cars go down the same line so they do have when they put put the suspension up there's a toyota version of the front assembly and the bulkhead and a subaru version but when you look at the knuckles at first when i talk to him like that's kind of a big deal but it's not because the knuckle is so small it's like a unit about this big so really it's something if you're a toyota person you just go and buy the brz part and swap out the knuckles if you care about that on sprung mass and you know you're again these are little superman that's hype very very negligible yeah and it's something that you'll probably see over the life cycle of the 86 so they can say they've changed things like in two years oh look what we did and you know it's all these little things they have to do and plan out something we have the car for six years every year we have to have something we can say that makes it fresh the other thing that they've done is in the back half is different toyota kept the original sway bar mounting points where a subaru has mounted their sway bar to either the subframe or the actual body of the car and that's something they do in their global architecture that they do in all their cars now and toyota wanted the old way subaru wanted their way and for whatever reason their engineers had a debate on what was better maybe maybe toyota was looking at it from it's easier to build a sway bar or get aftermarket modifications put on this than it was the subaru way i don't i don't really know they didn't explain it and obviously if it's subframe mounted the subframe will move a little bit in the rear so theoretically there's more stability in mounting it to the body not to mention of course the sway bars are different as well on these cars so you have a larger front sway bar on the brz and a larger rear sway bar on the 86 and again that's meant to change the handling characteristics famously during the development of this car because this is a car largely built by subaru hakio toyota got a hold of it and went i want this to be different yeah late in the development yeah but they never really clarified what that was you know was it the fact that it pushed too much typical subaru safeness where it has this understeer characteristic that takes over and then goes to oversteer i don't really know and toyota and subaru did not clarify any of that this is supposed to oversteer a bit more but honestly without driving them back to back directly in the same circumstances you can't really yeah and again all this you know we're talking about this like it's a race car and that's not what this is these are just subtle changes and tweaks what's the thing you do to change the overall feel of a car last you mess with bars right that's like the fine-tuning thing that you change as sway bars to like do i want a little bit more uh over here understeer you change the bar thickness and that's that those are really easy things to do and clearly that's why toyota made those changes versus subaru past that from my understanding the strut itself and the caliper and brakes are basically identical i don't know if you can swap over your old parts but i wouldn't be surprised if you could well hopefully you can i mean like a lot of this when you look at the underneath you can't really tell the difference i mean honestly i i would i would have to men that's how close they look is you would have to take the part off and measure it that's how much they look the same and you know they've carried over some of the stuff here like all of the aero panels like you still have this skid plate here you have all the aero treatments and they finally kept all of this because when the 86 first launched none of this was on here it was just all bare metal underneath so the side panels all this the body shell the body structure the under paneling the roof design and the new aero treatments make this a very balanced feeling car and when you look at the weight chart again that was something else they wanted to do with that near 50 50 split front rear and then close to 50 50 cross which you can obviously in the lowest center of gravity humanly possible and that's part of this whether you love or hate the subaru engine it allows them to mount that as low as possible and it does it gives you that that great neutral balance feeling that's very hard to do in a front wheel or i'm sorry front engine car yeah a 2.4 from basically subaru's yeah their new updated 2.4 but it has been changed because it's naturally aspirated it does have toyota's d4s system which is direct import injection which is a carryover and that's nice for a tuning tuning purposes if you're modifying it so they've had to make changes to the head design the intake manifold design those things related to the fuel system and they claim that they did some things internally which they would not tell us what to reduce friction to give it a more freer revving feeling plus the ecu tuning is different from the subaru engine family on their other cars yes it's also different between the gr86 and the subaru they claim that the engine tuning is different for both cars not to mention of course all the changes we talked about when it comes to suspension and steering tuning so jack we just got back from king motorsports scott the owner uh allowed us to put this on his dyno which is highly consistent they used it often to tune a multitude of cars we put this 2.4 liter which has been updated it's got 0.4 more liters and they did that by increasing the bore that's why the born stroke is no longer the same and by doing that it did not change the size of the engine at all it's identical in terms of height width and all that the big question is what's the power let me just tell you exactly the best run they had was 209 horsepower to the wheels to the wheels with 173.69 pounds feet of torque i mean those numbers moved around a little bit but the worst result that we had was 206 206 horsepower now to put that in perspective a stock frs or 86 made 162 horsepower and 130 pounds feet of torque so you know when we look at this and when we hit it on the track i think you could pretty much predict the outcome of how what this is going to be like to drive that is about equal to the ap it's better than the ap1 s2000 by a pretty decent amount in torque and it's almost near identical to an ap2 so you have similar weights you have similar balance and now a ton of horsepower and way better arrow here this carousel has a revised gearbox and it still goes through a taurus and limited slip differential you always get a taurus in you have two different gearbox options you have an automatic six speed which having driven it at monticello at the launch event i can tell you unless you can only drive an automatic if you plan on driving it quickly do not get that gearbox it does not want a rev match downshift that quickly it's very slow to react but the manual is still excellent walk me through some of the changes mark so the azin automatic had updated clutch packs and torque converter and tuning so it is better to change mechanically than the old one however the manual transmission has also been changed it now has triple cone sync rows in first and third gear they have changed the uh shift forks and reinforced them and used ball bearings to improve shift feel they changed the fluid so really what they're trying to do is improve shift feel all the way around and you notice it's and it's less bulky it's less notchy feeling when it's cold it's just more smoothed out the engagement is more positive and trd at least on the 86 side trd is gonna have a short shift kit that's available from a dealership pretty much right away when this thing goes on the market so you have that it's better shifting than it did before and it should theoretically hold more power than yes gearbox which is super important but with that mark i think it's time for us to take this to autobahn country club and see what this drives like compared to the old one absolutely [Music] [Music] mark we're back in agr 86 we're gonna do a little bit of a street drive and we're not at monticello country club because we're at autobahn country club instead i only go to country clubs how many clubs can i fit in the back of this well mark this is the same as the last car which means because it's under thirty thousand dollars oh my goodness i can't be seen at a country club i'm surprised they let us in so with that mark i'm gonna do a little bit of a launch [Music] as we showed earlier this is much much faster than the last car and you notice it from a street perspective not only in the track which realistically is not where most people are going to be taking their 86 all the time this is a street car right most buyers of this use this is their only vehicle and around town down low in higher gears is where you notice the extra torque and it is well it is extraordinarily noticeable is that is that a fair assessment of this car this car improves upon every single deficiency that the original car had in terms of drive train and input points the shifter feels better it's easier and less bulky to operate the engine makes power and torque throughout the rev band without feeling like it's choking on itself down low like the old motor did and it pulls all the way to the red line where it doesn't remember the last engine it just felt like you didn't want to rev it out because it just felt so like unbalanced it's not anemic you jokingly called it a dog yeah and you know it's sad that you have to say that about a naturally aspirated engine that revs the 7 500 rpm but it really did feel like a repurposed economy car engine i think yeah it did well i mean i they didn't say that that's what it was they had they had built it purposely for to be a sports car experience but it certainly did not feel like it especially when you get out of cars from like 25 years ago and the four cylinders were better than than what's in here but there are benefits to it and we've talked it to death the 2.4 adds the displacement trick it adds a a liquid oil cooler warmer all of the body construction improvements have made this a much quieter car made a lot more compliant it rides better it feels better it feels better when you're just putting it around it feels less of an edgier car less when the car came out originally it had a ton of like it was over over damped this car doesn't have that bouncy house effect to it it's really compliant and if you close your eyes and you got in this you would think you were in a completely normal sedate like two-door car but when you get on it and you start to push it a little bit not at track speeds it still has the rewarding attributes of the last car it just builds on all of it yeah it still wants to rotate at reasonable speeds it still feels alive which if again if you're coming out of someone like we jokingly call them mpc cars like you're i need to throw a toilet on the most like a rav4 or crv yeah you're running the mill civics and all that that's not what this is you know that's not what this feels like this is a true like entry-level drivers car and probably the best one on the planet aside from the md2 miata and unlike the nv2 much like we talked about in our you know like every conversation we always have this is a card that bridges the gap in usability right it's not as usable something like a golf or a velociran or a civic type r but when compared to an nd2 oh yeah or like even an s2000 man this thing is far far more practical it's a car that you can spend thirty thousand dollars on and use year around with the right tires and there's very minimal compromise now in terms of daily drivability aside from its rear wheel drive which is exactly what you want if you're buying this 30 grand is giving you a hell of a lot of fun here without bankrupting you and you know all the things that were after market wise on the last car or most of those are going to carry over here so this starts at a much higher it's a better car it's a much higher starting point so i can't wait to see what this is like on track and then what happens when people start modifying the hell out of it all right mark let's head on to south and let's start pounding on this thing for real jack we're on the track full speed new gr86 so you and i are very familiar with the old car obviously we've driven this already tell me what this feels like out here to you initial first impressions um i think as we talked about in the shop that weight balance that 50 50 bounce and almost 50 50 cross is super it's super evident in the way that this thing handles and performs out here i mean there's this neutral sense of everything and all the driving characteristics and yes out of the box it's a little bit more understeer prone than we originally felt at the monticello event on initial turn in and slower speed segments it wants to understeer first and then it goes into oversteer at higher speed but i think some of this is going to be easy to dial out with alignment and better tires and all that but as a starting point this thing is flying compared to the old 86 i mean it's i i'm i haven't seen the lap times yet but i'm almost positive this thing is faster than the nd2 miata to me i think one of the things that's a big standout particularly when you're driving closer to the limit and i'm gonna be honest autobahn feels like it's a much higher grip surface than monticello is there isn't this constant feeling that the car all wants to do is rotate but even like rotate isn't a big slide or a big drift event this car to me there's that subtle hint always in the way it feels in your ass basically that this car is willing to rotate it's willing to rotate under braking it's willing to rotate when you lift it's it feels really really rewarding to me yeah this car to me like the old one i felt like there was a lot more time to like just sit back and like let things come to you this car things happen quicker because there's just you carry so much more speed and you're not spending so much time at least on these tires fighting the rear end it's not walking all over the place you know it's just this car is gonna have a high ceiling in terms of performance for people who want to track day and have real fun in it and it's really good road manners comfortable road manners you would never think that this was as soft as it was just coming out here i'll be honest i i thought that this was gonna be like total total softness like the miata is and it's don't get me wrong it's soft but it it moves around distract you is it this roly-poly car exactly i guess the next question i have mark while we're driving this thing flat out is how does the engine feel specifically to the prior generation vehicle in your mind out here well we saw the dyno plots it makes more power everywhere and you notice it out here especially you don't have to downshift like i could stay in third here whereas before i would have to downshift into second all the time um the only complaint i have is i wish it rev more and i know it revs smoother than the old one to the red line but it just feels like it it runs out of revs real fast yeah and that's just the theater of older 90s naturally aspirated cars but you know that's the time we live in the work to be fair to this yeah i mean honestly under or around thousand dollars not i'm not talking about lap times or necessarily overall speed around a racetrack but from an enjoyment perspective this is a really really hard car to beat [Music] final thoughts on the gr86 our plan was to reshoot our old comparison between this car the old 86 the nd2 miata and the 2000 and as we did this we realized it's just kind of a rehash so i'm trying to combine that all here for you the major takeaway is the big thing with the new brzn86 is the engine you saw the dyno charts you saw the performance and really what it is is you're adding the naturally aspirated horsepower and torque that the last generation car needed through through forced induction either super charging or turbo charging now you basically have that same amount of power without having to go down that route so you know that what you're starting with here with just simply two modifications really or three modifications the crash bolts to give you more front camber real tires and brake pads and fluid you are going to be flying in this car i'm not kidding it has it's going to have such a high overhead once you get into some of the more real modifications like suspension and better brakes even better brakes than just pads this is a perfect replacement for somebody that wants to have fun on the street and really wants to track davis car it's finally going to be that competitive product that it probably should have been in the first generation now how does how does it really feel and i'm just going to lay it out straight for you the nd2 miata is the best street car out of all these out of all the vehicles i just talked about it has this sense of whimsicalness it is fun to operate on the street it's just soft enough it just makes you feel like you want to pound it around and have fun all the time with it this car loses a lot of that because you don't have the open top experience the engine doesn't sound great and the fake engine noise just is horrendous in this form so you lose some of it even though it is faster than the nd2 miata the next best street car really is this it is the powers accessible down low you can see the torque curve and the power output is good from pretty much the low rpm to the high rpm you can reach the limits on the street and still have a little bit of fun you can kind of go sideways you get good fuel economy upper 20s and you have a usable car i'm not fighting with cup holders i'm not fighting where i'm going to put stuff in this thing which i do in the nd2 i curse it every time i go in it the s2000 is equally as worthless so this becomes that real usable car that you can not even think about it feels normal when you're inside the s2000 is by far the worst kind of street car and you know the the least usable in that factor from street performance now in terms of driving excitement on the track the s2000 is the best driver's car hands down it's the way the chassis is it wants to rotate it wants to to rotate under braking this car still doesn't do that well in stock form the nd2 miata it i don't i don't know what it is with mazda but they they set this car up so good for the street and then you get on the track and all you're doing is this you get so distracted by the body roll you're so distracted on how that car just wants to just rotate randomly there's so much weight transfer instead of working with the car you're working against you have to overthink the nd2 and the aerodynamics are not that good i wish they would have an enthusiast version instead of having that club have something that's club with a stiffer setup uh so the nd2 really is the worst track car out of the box from all three of these best street car worst track car this is kind of finds the perfect middle ground and the s2000 maintains it's still the best track car but the worst street car and i'm kind of gonna leave it at that for you i think there is some things about this car that bother me as they've launched it it doesn't come with real brakes you go back to the the crummy like stock brakes they don't have a brembo option you know all these things that they're gonna start to add over every year oh we have this package in that package so if you're an early adopter you're pretty much gonna get stuck with this loop again great car i can't wait to really get behind the wheel of this as jack buys one and see how it is doing some simple modifications to it over the course of its life cycle thanks for watching i'll see you next time [Music]
