the bentley bentayga is the benchmark when it comes to luxury suvs it was the first and bentley say it was also the best but now it's facing a whole load of competition from the likes of the rolls-royce cullinan lamborghini urus and aston martin dbx so the boys and girls at crew have had to step their game up with this the brand new bentayga yep this 2020 bentayga has a huge weight of expectation on its shoulders bentley says that it has to offer the performance of a supercar the ride comfort of a limo off-road ability to arrive at a range rover the semi-autonomous driving capability of something from the future as well as the craftsmanship you'd expect from a bentley i want to examine some of these credentials starting with the whole quality craftsmanship and design thing bentley say this has a more confident face i say it's got a less ugly face so slight difference of opinion there but i guess when you have a less ugly face of course you're going to be more confident so maybe we're both right in terms of specific changes the grill is now wider than before and slightly more upright they've also put the b badge directly on this new clamshell bonnet so it's less fussy than before and it has these gorgeous led cut crystal headlights which bring it into line with the continental gt and the bentley flying spur this is the car that not a lot of people liked when it first came out but with these small changes i think especially in this color gorgeous around the sides not much has changed but you get more streamlined b vents and bigger wheels 22s are standard now instead of 21s giving it a better wheel-to-body ratio and speaking of bees they've dumped the b-shaped brake lights around the back in favor of ovals again with 3d cut crystal elements interesting if not totally natural looking indicator animations and these elliptical exhausts practicality is decent too though not the best the boo is bizarrely only 484 liters which is the same as you get in a range rover evoke the rolls-royce cullinan offers 600 liters and aston martin dbx gives you 632. now because the boot is quite small that means the interior can be quite big and they've improved the amount of legroom you get in the new bentega by a hundred millimeters which is what four inches and they've done that by slightly tweaking the backboard that separates the boot from the cabin they've also improved the amount of lean angle you get with the seat so before you had 32 degrees of lean but now look at this that's 40 degrees of lean you can get a proper lounge on in here the mantega comes with three different seating options a seven seater a five seater that's this one and a four seater if you go for the four seater the posh one then you have the option of purchasing the mulliner console bottle cooler which is bentley speak for fridge and that normally lives back here and that comes with two cumbria cut crystal champagne flutes as well as space for a 750 milliliter bottle of waitro's finest carver i'm slamming it in the five-seater today so i've only got space for a couple of cup holders but that's pretty decent and all bentaygas come with this lovely 5-inch detachable tablet which allows you to control various features in the car unfortunately it doesn't let you deploy the flying bee like it did in the flying spur you don't have a flying bee in this i think that's down to safety but you can control other things like the seat ventilation your climate control and also the blinds for this enormous panoramic glass sunroof up front bentley's brought things up to date with a few useful tweaks they've pulled the center console further into the cabin and freed up space creating a dedicated spot for your mobile phone with an inductive charging unit and a signal booster it has a truly gorgeous new vent and clock design on top of the dashboard inspired by the one in the bentley baccala along with newly designed seats the leather in here by the way is beluga i think i think that's the color and not an actual whale i don't think even bentley are outraged enough to cover their car in whale skin but if they did still looks amazing and the stitching is especially delicious speaking of stitching they've fixed the stitching on the steering believe it or not the old one had stitching on the outer edges but they've moved that so all the stitching is now on the inner edges so now it protects your fingers from damage i'm guessing in the old bentayga people were complaining of bleeding everywhere from all the thread eviscerating their fingers now knobs you know i'm big into my knobs and these are some of the finest in the game trust me i wish you could feel these but you can hear them listen almost like a little delicate tapping and then you move down to these ones that control the climate control slightly more high pitched honestly the mechanical nature of the haptic sensation just contrasts beautifully against the backdrop of the postmodern liquid crystal display showing you the ambient temperature sick the screens are new sadly the bentayga lacks the rotating three-sided display you get in the flying spur but this 10.9 inch display is high-res has nice clean graphics and a simple interface so it's the little things that elevate the bentayga the tech the materials the fit and finish but what about the way it drives how do you think it drives so bentley bentayga they might have made a couple of subtle tweaks with this car but they definitely haven't thrown the baby out with the bath water the mantega has always been brilliant and this new one just as good one thing that gets me is just how refined it is it's definitely a step above the likes of the bmw x5 or mercedes gle which is just as well really because this thing cost like 147 000 pounds it's riding on 22-inch wheels as standard with massive rubber and yet there's very little road noise you could hear a pin drop in here they've also got double glazing so there's no wind noise it could all be kicking off out there but in here silence this thing weighs around 2 400 kilograms but i reckon a good half a ton of that is sound denning material because it is properly luxurious all the touch points feel properly nice as well everything from the indicators to the wipers to the light switches the knobs we already know about the steering wheel's got a lovely weight to it it all feels expensive as you'd expect from a bentley bentayga the bentega has got a bunch of different driving modes which you can click through using this dial on the center console comfort is obviously the nicest to drive in every day it raises the suspension height and allows the dampers to work in their most forgiving setting sport is obviously the most aggressive driving mode it lowers the suspension it causes the steering wheel to stiffen up it gives you more responsiveness with the throttle and the whole thing just feels more angry more alive there's also a custom mode which allows you to fine-tune everything to your personal taste but honestly the best mode of all is before bentley it is a proper goldilocks setting that gives you a nice halfway house between comfort and performance interestingly bentley's also thrown in a bunch of different off-road modes which is kind of confusing to me because who's going to take their 150 000 suv off-road they also haven't made it the most user-friendly to understand what the different modes are supposed to do for example on the dial this looks like i've got some sort of snow and pineapple mode then you've got driving over landmines mode christmas mode and comedy spaghetti western mode i think again there's no indication what any of these modes does and i don't think anyone who buys this car is ever going to get much use out of these anyway so big deal and all of this comes together to make for a really comfortable ride so comfortable that bentley claims that bentayga has the right comfort of a limousine that's some big talk i'll be the judge of that this is a martini glass and inside it is of course the finest martini the person holding it is a very important dignitary he's so important that he can't actually sit in the back he's really really like a vip he's actually our cameraman so if the footage is rubbish in this film then you can blame him what i'm gonna do is just go for a drive and just show you how amazing that bentayga is i'm gonna whack it into comfort mode just to make it a little bit easier for you my friend and what you'll notice is just how smooth it is look at this the throttle pedal is really easy to modulate i can accelerate smoothly look at this pulling from 40 up to 50 miles an hour no drama whatsoever and then i can lift off get on the brakes these aren't carbon ceramics but watch look in any other car that will be everywhere by now but he's holding firm ease into a corner and what you're noticing right there is the 48 volt active anti-roll stabilization basically a pair of motors on each of the anti-roll bars twisting and applying outward force literally pushing the car down on the outer side as it goes around the corner the theory is that it should keep the car completely flat and as you can see it is working an absolute treat look at that look at that air suspension look at that that is glorious right here comes the left hander this is a 60 mile an hour zone that means i have to throw it in at 60 right ah it's on my leg but there's loads in there still right another left hander coming up this one looks a bit faster oh well held well held look at that and the acceleration oh look tell me that's not proper consumer testing that's epic well done bentley so it's clearly refined and did i mention the interior is really easy to wipe dry no i didn't yes it is but is it fast we should find out cheeky naught to 60 test yeah why not sport mode brake accelerate release there we go oh she pulls the result is pretty explosive for a car this size the bentayga will do naught to 62 in 4.4 seconds that's on the quick side the aston martin does it in the same time and although it can't quite match the lambo euros's 3.8 second time it's plenty quick for something this size the reason it's so quick is because it uses a four liter twin turbocharged v8 engine making 550 horsepower and 770 newton meters at all yep it's the same engine they use in the porsche kn turbo and no it doesn't make any more power or torque than the previous generation bentayga but who cares this thing is an absolute train acceleration is always aggressive the bentayga is constantly eager to pull away making overtaking maneuvers simple and effortless and if you happen to have an autobahn or a death wish it'll max out at a frankly scary 180 miles an hour that exhaust is lovely as well not particularly loud but you get this delicious slow rumble when you're just pouring around town and then when you open it up it screams it really does it's a really pleasant tone as for the gearbox what they haven't done is gone for a dual clutch transmission in this and that might be bad news if you're a driving purist because of course as we all know twin clutch gearboxes give you far more responsiveness when it comes to selecting the exact gear that you want at the exact moment that you want it what they've gone for is an eight-speed automatic and the reason for that is because autos allow you to tow heavier loads and of course bentley bentega owners are likely to do a bit of towing but you know what it's not all bad news because this gearbox is actually reasonably responsible okay like all gearboxes of this type it does slightly hesitate when shifting from third to second or second to first but everywhere else it's a decent box truth be told it's not as agile as i would have liked the bentayga you can really feel its weight when you pile into a corner this is not a car that likes to be hustled at ten tenths you can actually feel quite a lot of understeer and if you're not careful if you're going too hot you can find yourself exiting a little too quickly and ending up some place you might not want to be where the car is better is if you scale it back ever so slightly drive it at eight tenths allow it to settle into the bend and then use the prodigious power to squeeze out of that corner and when you drive it in a way this car is happy to be driven it's got a lovely flow to it you can string together a sequence of bends and and really get involved with the driving experience and actually the steering has got a nice amount of feedback to it and as a result yeah it's a bit of a driver's car on the whole it's easy to see why the bentayga has been the benchmark for luxury suvs yes it had the advantage of being first but despite the fact that there are now some newcomers who do some things better for example the aston martin dbx certainly handles better the rolls-royce cullinan is a lot more luxurious and the lamborghini urus accelerates like nothing on four wheels of its size the bentayga can't quite match any of those cars individual strengths but where it excels is in its ability to deliver a really well-rounded package it's still fast it's still fun it's still luxurious that bentayga is still the daddy there
