you kidding me [Applause] yes please yes please this is going to be on an interstate we are in the hov lane so it's motorcyclists and you know you follow the rules anyways we're gonna move forward just a little bit here and he's going at a pretty decent speed you know as he's going to highway speeds and that's what you want to do obviously you want to go with the flow of traffic but i'm going to scroll back just a little bit more and this is a very good space cushion i want you guys to understand this is a very good space cushion so this is what i want you guys to be having when you're out on the road uh whether you're on interstate or even in town i like to have a big space cushion just in case something happens okay so i just want to point that out make sure you have a good space cushion that way you have enough stopping distance that way you have enough room for swerves and a few other things now right here why are people applying the brakes okay so this is one of those uncommon things in a common situation uh people apply the brakes on the interstate for multiple reasons maybe they're slowing down to merge lanes maybe they're slowing down because there's something happening up ahead and if it's typically just one person applying the brakes it's they're making that decision if there's a bunch of people across the whole path right here applying the brakes more than likely there's a huge incident and you should be slowing down too brake lights are a good clue that this person up ahead in the truck is making a decision we don't know what that decision is yet because we don't see it and we're not close enough so right here he's still making a decision still making a decision now there's the secondary break right here and this is where you should start being concerned and it looks like the rider is a little concerned you actually see his right hand so he goes from having his hand on the throttle to reaching for that front brake and slowing down so he's doing what he's supposed to be doing this is what i like about it is that he sees the space cushion starting to close close close close because he's getting closer and closer and closer to the vehicle in front so he's going into orange stage and he's actually applying some braking pressure to kind of you know ease it off a little bit still maintain that space cushion absolutely good job there so he's going to be moving forward a little bit okay they released the brakes now they're back on the brakes and you see that front end dive just a little bit the truck is like this and then it's going to dive down a little bit so that means that truck is really applying the brakes and that should give you a huge concern so at this point you need to start finding your escape pass okay you barely have anything on the left you might be able to make it not the best choice you could lane filter right on that white line now that's also not the best choice especially if you are going to be applying the brakes or then having to swerve again so right here you definitely need to be practicing your progressive brake pressure i talked about that in one of my previous videos where you can actually go out and practice and practice your progressive brake pressure and that's going to translate into mercy braking you're just going to do it quicker and quicker and quicker with emergency braking so moving forward just a little bit more and that is why right there that this truck was slamming the brakes maybe they were white stage maybe they weren't paying attention and the vehicle in front of them slammed the brakes and last second they did but this is why we need to have a good space cushion so right here we need to start applying those brakes faster and faster and faster and faster we're not smashing it or grabbing or squeeze squeeze squeeze squeeze we squeeze a little bit more and more and more and more until we really get a lot of weight on that front tire and you're able to stop like i said i talk about that link will be in the description for that video yeah this is 7th street 7th avenue so okay so this is uh phoenix right here i think i know exactly where this is at so right here we should be slowing down we should be stopping it's very hard to stop especially at interstate speeds so at some point you have to make a decision am i going to stop in time and if it's a no you need to find an escape path you need to find a spot where you can navigate that motorcycle into needle you know you're threading that needle basically and where's that needle that we have we have a little bit to the right a little bit to the left around this truck hopefully that truck is going to maintain that position but we're in a bad spot we have to do as much as possible so he's going to go and go and go and hit the back of the vehicle now this is better than hitting the back of the vehicle going 70 or 80 miles an hour now it's not the best thing ever because you don't want to hurt your baby you don't want to hurt you and you're really going to damage that bike and maybe damage your left hand possible injuries to the left side of your body extremities maybe hit your head not good overall but it's better than smashing into the back of this vehicle at 70-80 miles an hour that's what i want to take away from this sometimes you just cannot avoid an incident and that's why we utilize the smart rider principles and you need to be able to get gear acquire personal protective equipment for yourself and you know what on top of that for your bike get some sliders get some engine guards get some stuff to protect the bike in case of a low side or anything that won't you know obviously do this okay so this right here sliders aren't going to help it's going to smash everything anyways that looks like it might be armored jeans you can kind of see a lump hopefully that's not a broken bone because of deformity but it's probably armor those look like actual moto boots to be quite honest but the thing is i don't know either way where full gear looks like he is so hopefully injuries are minimized people did come by and they did offer help and call 901 and it sounded like he needed it he was a little upset afterwards but that's the adrenaline moving so at the end of the day be situationally aware of practice those breakings practice the swerves practice searching for escape routes wear full gear in case you can't do nothing or just the situation kind of screwed you over and then hopefully if you're riding with a buddy they're medically trained they can hopefully help you out and then if you have all this knowledge you're prepared you'll be like okay i feel good how about you go ahead and help somebody else out that might not know what they're doing okay that's part of the smart writer principles with that said let's move on to the next one and see what happens so once again we're focused on the situational awareness and if you're situationally aware you should know that we do have that motorcycle giveaway so how you sign up is by joining patreon.com the firemen you have tier one two three and four each one of them you're going to get my ebook for free the beginner's guide to motorcycle riding but then you're also going to get entries into the giveaway now the rules and everything the terms and conditions all that stuff is on my website ddformcrew.com all those links are going to be in the description in the first comment also and the thing is on that website you get free training and you get all the rules you get to figure out how you can enter for free on top of being a patron and then doing it that way so there's a bunch of cool things that are involved in that we're giving it away we're going to announce the winners in october so you have plenty of time to sign up so do so now so you can accumulate more and more and more entries so with that said let's go ahead and move into this now there was some context he says his injuries involved a sore lightly sprained thumb so we talk about skier's thumb all the time some scraping on his left knee and he says that's it so he got extremely lucky especially with the lack of gear it could have been a lot worse so be very careful out there now the damage to the bike was a little more extensive he says all the plastics were pretty much destroyed some of the radiator fluid leaked out and he said that's pretty much it you know no frame damage no tank damage no tail damage no fork damage he said he even was able to ride it around in the parking lot before giving it to 904 performance i'm guessing that's where he got it fixed he said ultimately the black f-150 was found at fault and was sighted no injuries in the vehicle he was lucky and so is his bike to be somewhat damaged but not bad and permanent he wants to make sure everybody understands you know be as visible as possible make sure that the car drivers are keeping an eye out for everybody but you know what that's what he's saying and we're going to move into what i think and then what we can learn from this so moving forward right here he's going a little bit fast around this area now i understand all these people in line are wanting to turn left into that who knows maybe somebody's impatient and wants to come into your lane because it's open so screw this i'm just gonna go home i'm tired of waiting i'm having a bad day the kids are yelling at me you know screw you kids let's go i'm done you know stop kicking the back of my chair who knows what's happening that could be what's going on but this is why i want you to be very careful around going past vehicles that are stacked up like this who knows if they're going to merge into your lane without checking because they're pissed or whatever it is and this is why it's a pattern to me to make sure to be in orange stage when you're around this area so that means you don't speed that means you are ready to act it means you're ready to do something outside of brown stage so we're gonna move forward a little bit and this is what i'm talking about right here so you got a lot of vehicles a lot of vehicles a lot of vehicles now i see an intersection coming up and i'm typically an orange stage every time i go to an intersection but i should be in orange stage anyways so that means i'm not going to speed through this intersection especially since it's going to be a blind area now left turners are the ones that kill a lot of motorcyclists in intersections so that's my biggest fear when i'm going to intersection and right here i can't see anything around all these vehicles that to me is a big problem i need to be able to see and if i can't see i'm going to slow it down like i'm going through a haunted house i'm not running around corners in a haunted house because i don't want nobody to scare me i'm going to put my kid in front so they get scared and i can laugh but i'm not going to be running around i'm going to take it nice easy and creep around okay that's how i treat this right here i'm going to treat this like i'm creeping around a haunted house corner what is around there i'm going to slow it down ready to act you know get an elbow into that you know a scary clown with a fake chainsaw so that's what i'm going to be doing here and boom there it is no time to react we're going too fast not enough stopping distance where are we going to swerve can't swerve left we're going to swerve right where the gap is closing it's just all these big problems and the one thing that we can definitely do before we even get to this point is just slow it down going to orange stage intersections are dangerous places for motorcyclists why are we hauling ass through it now this is going to be either a mistake or maybe it wasn't a big deal for him at the end of the day all i'm trying to say is that this is a possible factor you know too fast for the environment it could be 50 55 speed limit in this area but too fast for the environment something new something uncommon you know a bunch of people lined up usually not this many people lined up you know all these different reasons so be very careful and if something does happen if you're ever in this position and you accidentally did it hopefully you have full gear luckily he was fine but i've seen some people with full gear still have massive injuries and some people no gear have no injuries it's just it's weird how it works but you still are gonna have a better chance with full gear so he's going to move forward right here and he's not going to be able to stop the time you see that right hand so about right here he's going to perceive an incident he's going to react to it right there there's the reaction and the moment he squeezes this is where we have breaking distance out of the total stopping distance so breaking distance is not enough for this speed it really isn't so you're either gonna have to break then swerve or swerve then break or just swerve or just break and hopefully you make it so he's gonna just break and it's not going to be enough you're still sliding and there it is just barely tippity-tapped that rear side now imagine if we're going five miles less you know five miles an hour less than this maybe this would have been a close call so if we could just remove that one factor i like the fact that he didn't dump the bike when he when he braked so if maybe his braking was good it's just that the total stopping distance wasn't enough so imagine if we slowed it down just five miles an hour just five miles an hour could have made it through that and then hopefully you know afterwards you know if you made it through it with the five miles an hour or less you'd think to yourself okay next time what happened you know what did i do what did i do wrong would i do right okay five miles an hour less good that was great i need to practice my braking i need to practice my vision i need to practice this because that was too close for me but you know hopefully he's going to be doing fine now and that's what we're doing we're learning from this incident so slow it down just a little bit especially if you can't see because you know if you can't see them they can't see you and they especially can't see you trust me i mean we're invisible to them and i'll be talking about that in a future video about why people can't see us it's the recency illusion it's the inattentional blindness the motion induced by all these different things you know the frequency illusion i i could talk more about it but i won't do that today i just want to make sure you guys see this and understand we need to be extremely safe we need to be paying attention we need to be situationally aware we need to practice our fundamental skills physical and mental we need to get gear be a smart rider everybody happens super quick but here's the thing there are some clues out there to let you know maybe i should not take it this fast that we have more time to react for an escape route swerving breaking whatever it is we need to do especially in the orange stage we don't want to go into brown stage we want to stay in yellow and orange stage certain areas of the time but definitely not want to be in white stage either so right here what we have is we have chevrons now chevrons are going to be a good indicator that's going to be a sharp turn so be very careful with that because curves and intersections are extremely deadly for motorcyclists and guess what this is two of them into one so this is the final boss so right here you got the sharp turn so be very careful with that go ahead and slow it down get ready and then you also can't see very well because this vehicle so remember if you have bad vision you can't see these clues you're kind of screwed so slow it down or let this person go way ahead give yourself a space cushion get in a position to where you can see but that's not we're going to be talking about today we're going to be talking about the clues that we see out here all right so he's gonna hit that vehicle but real quick if we were slowing down okay if we were going slow enough or or at least the speed limit okay i think a lot of these guys might be going above the speed limit i can't tell but you can kind of see a track suit so maybe they invested in some proper safety gear so they could go fast that might be the mentality unsure not gonna say that but anyways what we have right here is we do have a right turn and then we have a straight arrow and all these different markings on the road so these are all clues for an intersection now i understand well you didn't see it until the last second and that's the problem we're going a little bit too fast so if we're going a little bit slower or the speed limit like i mentioned we'll be able to see these ahead of time and we'll be able to react with proper speed proper distance proper everything another thing is you can kind of tell right here the side of the vehicle it's a little blurry here but our vision should be pretty good we need to be checking on our vision double checking you know with the doctor making sure we can ride within our limits but if you can see the side of the vehicle that is a definite pattern for an intersection the problem in this accident here is that it is a curve so very bad line of sight you can't see around the blind turn with traffic and then also an intersection so it's it's just like the worst situation overall but the problem is we can't be going this fast okay so the solution for all of this is to slow it down especially on curves that we can't see use the clues like the chevrons and all the arrows and you see the sides of vehicles it's like this is a intersection and a curve oh crap this is not good so how about we slow it down go into orange stage get ready to break so cover those front brakes get ready to swerve so you're ready to do something high alert once you exit this area go back to yellow stage enjoy your ride and zone in once again it's almost like a non-issue where there's no real problem here but here's the thing a lot of motorcyclists get upset start having road rage a lot of car drivers get upset having road rage we just need to relax and we need to actually see these things happen ahead of time so that they won't be close calls and they definitely won't be road rage incidents so we're gonna move forward a little bit he has his speedo blurred out but i'm not i don't care too much about that and the reason why is because the car right here is actually going to be picking up speed and going about the same speed as the motorcyclist and the motorcyclist is in a good lane position and this is what's going to happen here so he's going forward going forward going forward using a quad lock not a form it's all right you know code dan 25 anyways you see how the vehicle is just kind of maintaining everything right there okay so we're technically in their blind spot we're off to the side it doesn't matter if you're super far to the side or if you're right here the problem is we're in that dead zone basically so once you start seeing that there is an on-ramp coming in and in your peripheral see that there's a vehicle right here and it's just kind of maintaining a path of travel and speed with you just take a quick look and be like okay well i'm kind of at this weird angle let me go ahead and just roll up throttle a little bit and scoot back while that vehicle can keep going and then just get an idea of what's going to happen because right here this car is making a choice right now it's not made a solidified choice it's still making a choice do i want to get in this lane do i want to get in this lane do i want to get in this lane and guess what we don't know what their choice is yet so i like to get myself away from people that haven't made a choice now they will make a choice when they actually get in the lane and then they're staying that lane and then they start using indicators to move over so right away though right here they haven't made one yet so we're gonna be watching we're watching corner of the eye corner of the eye okay perfect i think this guy might be in this position you know okay maybe he made a choice in this lane we're in a blind spot still and that's where the problem really lies is that maybe he still is making a choice but we're in the blind spot so we can't be seen that's that's as simple as that so that's why i say roll up the throttle until they make a choice because who knows he could still be going into our lane and i think that is what happens now this is a scary spot because now you're boxed in you can't swerve left or maybe right now you might be able to but you couldn't earlier so this is why i say roll off the throttle rolling up throttle one two three four five miles per hour slower is gonna open up a space cushion it's gonna make it to where nobody's gonna be around you maybe upset the person behind you but they're gonna switch lanes not a big deal so that's why i like to roll out the throttle accelerate and get back to speed roll throttle when something happens get back to speed switch lanes do whatever you have to do to get away from all these land mines but he handled it pretty well he go ahead and roll up throttle apply a little bit of brake pressure and then he's gonna go ahead and put his hand up and shake his head a little bit not a big deal he didn't race up punch mirrors do all these dumb things because he was a smart rider part of the smart rider principles is teaching and mentoring other riders but here's the thing guys how about we advocate for riders too how about we help out other riders by not doing hooligan crazy stuff that is going to put a bad image on us maybe this person right here never interacted with a motorcyclist and this is the first interaction and what happens if we punch their mirror now the next motorcyclist they see they don't give a crap about and possibly hit us and just like screw you type of thing we don't want that okay so be good riders be smart riders do something like this nice and easy watch out for oncoming traffic pay attention you know merging everything wait for them to make a decision roll throttle accelerate we're on badass bikes we're having a good time we can go fast if we want not a big deal and be done with it [Music] bring it so this car kind of came out of nowhere and it's pretty scary but you know how do we prevent that now there's some things that you should be doing in this area okay so you should have a certain level of paranoia and it sounds pretty counterintuitive to motorcycling you know i don't want to be paranoid while riding well there's sometimes you kind of have to be and this is one of those areas let's move on to this and we see right here we see some little green okay so there's there's an intersection uh just based off of that you should be in orange stage but based off of the fact that i have a car here there's an intersection there we have a bunch of cars here i'm gonna be in orange stage anyways good line of sight this is the position that i would be in so you see how you can see the car in front the car in front of that car the car in front of that car the car in front of that car very good positioning this is where i would be so moving forward right here we're gonna go ahead and lane filter now one of the problems with lane filtering is you do reduce your escape paths left or right so you really only have acceleration or deceleration and you really only have braking basically so you can't swerve so that's one of the big problems but you do reduce a potential problem getting rear ended so there's pros and cons to it and so make sure you choose what pros and cons you want to use for that situation involved so moving forward a little bit more you see the pattern right there you see the side of the vehicle that's what i'm talking about what's the difference between all these vehicles on your screen right now in that vehicle you can see the sides of the windows you can see the door handles you can see the door itself you can see the natural or not natural you can see the design shaped of the compartment for all the people in there okay so that right there is is what you need to be looking for that is that scary pattern because that right there means somebody can do this in front of you and that's not what you want to do you typically see this you know the front of the vehicle they're going straight you see the behinds of the vehicle like this vehicle and that's typical you even see vehicles the back of them when they're parked like this so that's typical but that right there is what you need to burn into your brain this is the familiarity checklist this is the the thing where you're actually okay i see this now i'm gonna start finding it out there on the road this is what i want you guys to be doing so when you see that be very careful be like i'm going to wait for this person to make a choice what are you going to do are you stopped are you going to move are you stopped you're going to move and they're still moving but back there since i'm asking those questions are you going to stop or you're going to move stop reading a move i'm reaching for that front break i'm getting ready to break i'm rolling up the throttle just a little bit until i get past this intersection and then i'll go ahead and increase the throttle again but before i get to it i want to set myself up for success and going and hauling ass without any type of braking without any type of rolling off the throttle without any type of preparatory stage you're going to be in a lot of trouble and you're not going to have enough reaction time enough anything to be able to stop in time guys that's one of the biggest things here is that we just cannot stop we just cannot swerve we just cannot do all these things in a split second like we do if we're playing football we have to pivot and catch a ball we can't just do that on a motorcycle we have to prepare we have to have a plan we have to have the playbook you know before going into this stuff so make sure you look for those patterns make sure you look for all those situations going to orange stage be prepared to reach for those breaks roll up the throttle if you have to coming up to an intersection and then go ahead and increase your throttle on the way out of the intersection but that's the thing guys we need to focus on what's important and then we need to prepare okay it's just not going to happen you know we're not going to just naturally be safe out on the road that's not how things work [Music] yeah this is a huge fear for states that don't allow lane filtering uh there's only a few states in the united states that does allow it and then everywhere else in the world you're allowed to which is kind of weird why can't we do it anyways i'm not going to get into that right off the bat though i want to just take a look at this image and be as safe as possible not a hundred percent safe but safe as possible and that really goes into the smart rider system you know it's finding these hazards you know seeking out hazardous situations maintaining your fundamental skills acquiring personal protective equipment rescuing other riders with medical training and then teaching and mentoring other riders and right away it didn't acquire any gear okay so maybe we have a helmet but no gloves no jacket none of that stuff be very very careful out there because if something does happen that you have zero control over and you cut up your body and you damage your body because you didn't have gear that's where you're gonna start having problems so the seeking out and recognizing dangerous situations is right here guys intersections we talk about intersections all the time maintaining your fundamental physical and mental skills to be quite honest is also very important so right here in order to seek out hazards we need to have good line of sight i can't see around these vehicles so let's say we didn't even get hit in this in this video like nobody behind us hit us let's say this person in front of us backed up do we have time do we really have time for any of this stuff can we move out of the way with our hands off we're not paying attention we don't know what the person in front of us is doing no so what i would do in this situation just for that right there i don't want somebody backing up in to me and i also don't want somebody hitting me from behind but for the backing up problem and for the behind problem i'm going to position myself i'm going to position myself a little bit better i'm actually going to move off to the right or the left or on the right is actually going to be a little bit easier to do because then i have an actual escape path if on the left i'm lane filtering on this i'm almost sharing the lane if i go in front so if somebody behind me is not paying attention hopefully they're going to hit this forward explorer i believe and not me maybe clip me a little bit but i'd rather have that than get my whole back uh shattered so we're gonna watch just a little bit more there's the impact and that's the scary part okay that is the real scary part and that can really damage and hurts you in some of my videos we talk about mechanism injury and that's really bad but right here just take a look easily could have had a broken back easily could have had broken legs arms everything but then you also have the road rash you also have impact injuries to the forearms to the wrist because when you fall you put your hands out and that's why when you have gloves especially motorcycle gloves okay this is why i tell you guys get them you're gonna have impact protection you have knuckle protection you're gonna have elbow protection shoulder protection with the jackets back protection with the jackets if you get the right stuff and then you also have motorcycle pants with protection to the hips and knees if you get the ones with the hip inserts and then boots and then obviously the helmet you want to protect as much as possible if you can't control everything now one thing i tell you guys all the time is we have control of a lot of stuff in this situation there was no real control on what that car driver was gonna do they were gonna hit somebody they're gonna either hit you or hit the car in front of you i honestly would rather them hit the car in front of me that's why i want to position myself off to the side i don't want to get hit i don't want anybody to get hit but if somebody is going to get hit i want to be the big ford explorer in the front versus the 500 pound bike and then the 160 pound dan in the fireman that's what i would rather not get hit i would rather the car get hit so guys treat it that way okay that they can take it they have airbags they have seat belts they're going to be as safe as possible we're going to get injured uh on the minorist of minority accidents okay so position yourself better just move off to the side so you have good line of sight so that you have an escape path and if somebody does act like a dumb dumb they're going to hit the car in front of you hopefully not even touch you but if they do it's going to be minor compared to something like this are you [ __ ] for real now when i say panic and i say you know not using your your brakes properly here's the thing when you're in this situation when you are right here your body goes to the lowest level of your training i'm not saying you guys aren't getting training i'm saying that it's going to go to the lowest level that's because you haven't practiced it enough if you think you've practiced it 20 times today or 20 times this week you need to practice it 40 to 60 times it's a lot like getting you know wood for the fire when you're camping okay i got a big bundle of sticks we're all good for the night no go get two to three times more than that and then trust me now you're gonna have enough for the night so when it comes to motorcycle riding if you feel like i got 20 minutes of breaking or 20 sessions and 20 drills of breaking let's do 40 let's do 60. get better what what's the worst thing that's going to happen not much you know it's going to be better than what's going to happen in here and once again i'm not saying that's what's happening where he didn't get enough training i'm just saying there's a panic and your body's gonna go to the natural level okay so now we're about to right here now this whole time i would be in yellow stage okay i'm kind of zoned in i don't see any natural hazards i don't see sides of the vehicles i don't see any patterns but what i see here is the road is starting to kind of go over this hill and that's kind of like a blind vertical turn it's a crest of a hill it's blind to me i can barely see now i can see i can see some cars so now i'm going to go into orange stage because you do have intersections back and forth and what are the intersections driveways i don't know if any of these people are going to go in a driveway i'm going to consider it an intersection so if i see a car especially if they're coming my way incoming traffic if they're with me you know they're going to turn right or left and i can just get out of the way but path of travel violation is what i'm concerned here so these vehicles as soon as i get next to them orange stage i'm gonna get ready i'm gonna get ready for the breaks i'm gonna get ready i'm gonna see what they're gonna do i'm gonna see if they're starting to slow down and see if the tires move i'm gonna see the indicators go all those different things get ready for it but then this guy came out of nowhere okay this is definitely going to be a path of travel problem so right here you need to start applying those brakes so what did i say earlier i said as soon as i see a car i see a car now i see the jeep or whatever the vehicle was with the light on it so i'm going to go ahead and just reach forward on those brakes i'm not going to roll up the throttle yet right here and i'm going to reach for the brakes now i'm going to roll off throttle and start applying some brake pressure this person has his tires and his body already moving those are the patterns that you need to be looking for so go ahead and start squeezing right here we don't want to squeeze right there that's what happens if you squeeze a little too late what did i say about the driveways intersections there it is guys so right here it's going to be squeezing that front brake squeeze that front brake with a couple of fingers now remember your front brake has a lot of stopping power 60 to 80 percent stock beam power for the bike the rear tire and the rear brake will do quite a bit you know like 20 you know 20 to 40 percent but once that weight gets that front tire because once you start applying brake pressure all of you and the bike is gonna start getting on that front tire and compressing that front fork once that happens the more and more weight on that front tire the more more braking power you have so now we're getting closer to 80 90 stopping power right now so if you're still pressing hard on that rear brake it's gonna start losing traction because it doesn't have a lot of friction a lot of weight and it's gonna start sliding and that's exactly what happened right there that's the fishtail so when i talk about not practicing enough this is what i'm talking about you can't just press the same amount with the right foot in the right hand you need to squeeze more and more and more and more and more and more until you come to the stop with that front brake rear brakes are very important for cruisers too so still do that but then start releasing a little bit of that right foot and then that rear brake and squeezing more and more front braking the only way you're going to do that naturally with habit is with practice practice practice and this is what happened right here this is a high side very dangerous very impact oriented type of crash low sides where you just kind of slide and you're going to have impacts with mostly road rash but this one you're going to get flipped over and then put those hands out this is why we need to have motorcycle protective gear too now this is a single vehicle accident okay this person might have caused it and pretty much at fault for being in the path of travel shouldn't have done that but we're the ones that are gonna be hurt nothing happened to their car nothing happened to them maybe financially if you're able to see them or whatever it is but the problem is we got hurt our our baby got hurt you know these this is not a good day for us so make sure you wear your gear make sure you're hyper aware and hyper alert especially in areas like this with multiple intersections driveways intersections whatever and practice your braking practice you're swerving because that could have been an option that you could have done too when you're in red stage don't go into brown stage everybody talked about the awareness code chart anyways with that said i hope you guys ride safe be safe and hopefully this guy is doing well thank you so much for letting me use this footage we're going to be better riders because of what happened to you so this is a typical situation here let's go ahead and move forward just a little bit and this right here is what i'm talking about can you see around this vehicle line of sight is very important for us as motorcyclists because we can't stop on a dime as much as you think your brembo brakes are good you just won't be able to okay you have a total stopping distance okay perception reaction which is when you're going to go ahead and reach for those front brakes and rear brakes and then actual braking distance so the moment you apply brakes to the moment you stop is the braking distance and that increases the more speed you go so total stopping distance is all of those combined and vision is very important because you want to know what's ahead of the vehicle in front of you because if you know what's ahead of the vehicle in front of you and they're applying the brakes so there's something like an obstacle in front of the vehicle in front of you that you see first it gives you an opportunity to reduce that perception and reduce that reaction and your braking distance might actually be reduced because you're rolling off the throttle just a little bit so that's going to be the biggest problem here in the biggest takeaway so right here he's not paying attention too much to the vehicle in front you know you're just kind of not white stage but maybe your yellow stage okay so white yellow orange red and brown there's the stage color code chart on the bottom right of your screen white stage you definitely don't want to be in yellow stage you can be in most of the time but if you're this close to a vehicle and you can't see around them this is one of those opportunities to go into orange stage and just kind of get ready for those breaks just in case now moving off to a position of good vision you can actually stay in yellow stage longer and i prefer to stay in yellow stage because orange stage you're a little bit more paranoid yellow stage you're zoned in still scanning for hazards and the only way you can scan for hazards is guess what vision so i'd actually be moving off to the left or a little bit to the right it all depends on which is safest you know off to the left you have incoming traffic off to the right you have an escape path that's closest to the right side with traffic so that way you're not running the head-on traffic when you have to do an escape path just in case so i would move off to the right just a little bit so that way i can see i can escape to the right if i have to i can break and then still lane filter so i'm setting myself up for success in this situation we didn't set ourselves up for success we kind of waited the last second so when i talked about perception reaction and braking distance this is it right here so we're seeing the brake lights us you know right here but as soon as he does this you see his hand move to roll off the throttle that is roughly the moment he perceives it takes about a half second full second to perceive and then move on to reaction and then the moment he applies his fingers right there this is the moment we start to react so reacting reacting reacting reacting boom now we're starting to squeeze now from here to when we stop is going to be breaking distance so add all three of them total stopping distance is this enough braking distance for this motorcyclist at this speed at 42 miles per hour this is not enough braking distance for miles per hour 43 to 42 miles per hour so we're gonna have to swerve at some point so that's why we need to know what we're good at when it comes to braking and swerving what we can do and what our bikes can do the only way you can do that is if you go to the parking lot and practice your emergency braking nice squeeze of the progressive braking think of like squeezing an orange you're squeezing more and more and more you're not smashing it so you'll get orange juice everywhere so you go out and practice in a parking lot you do that you also practice your swerving so you're gonna know how far you can really stop at certain distances position yourself for success move off to the right side so you have good vision and if something like this happens the dude slams his brakes just switch lanes you don't have to swerve just switch lanes especially if you did a 360 degree situational awareness very important you will do this on a bike and you can do this in a car you can do this on your bicycle you can do this while walking your dog you can do this at any moment in time just make sure you're being situationally aware and you have good vision biggest thing here so that's not what happened we hit this and we fell down so luckily it wasn't that big of an issue because you know it was almost zero speed but my guess is the vehicle up in front right there decided to slam the brakes and made this car slam his brakes and made you slam your brakes i'd rather react to the car ahead of him before we jump into the analysis of this i just want you guys to remember we do have a 2019 honda cbr 300r with abs as the giveaway bike on this channel so make sure you check out the link in the description and the first comment make sure you enter in and you know if you're gonna do some wheelies like this guy do it in a parking lot but uh well i don't know don't crash this new bike anyways enter in to win and we're gonna get going all right so right away you notice he's in a parking lot this is the area you want to do it and you don't want to do it in traffic because now you have multiple hazards you have cars you have pedestrians they have potholes crazy crazy craziness that you really have no control over when you go to a parking lot you can do a quick scan of how the area looks make sure okay nobody's around nobody's messing around with me i don't have to worry about cars boom go ahead and play around do some parking lot practice either wheelies slow u-turns tight turns from the stops figure eight swerves braking whatever it is you want to do speaking of parking lot practice i do have links in the description for that you can go to ddfncrew.com and i got free parking lot practice stuff you can do but anyways this is where you want to do it now we're going to go ahead and hit play i'm going to go ahead and just watch a little bit of this and i want you to understand right here okay we did crash now this is a terrible spot and this is exactly why we need gear so moving on to the second portion of what i wanted to talk about is gear okay so if you notice uh right here so he lands it and he's probably going a little too fast for the area and this is what a full-on panic brake does so watch this front tire see how it slides so when we talk about panic braking and losing traction on that front tire this is exactly what it looks like so if you watch any of my other after action reviews and all of a sudden right before they hit something or right before they dump the bike the handlebars do this that's exactly what it looks like from the front so very good information to just see so but right here the gear portion you see where the arms tend to go okay so you got his foot right there first impact is the foot wearing gear it looks like his ankle so on motorcycle boots they do have ankle inserts typically d30 armor it's that non-newtonian fluid where it's malleable but the moment it has an impact it hardens up so that might be something that you want to look into for the type of gear you get d30 it's that orange stuff and then his next impact is in the hand so your hand you know if you have nothing on you're going to scrape and rip pieces of flesh off not good so what you want to do is wear motorcycle specific gloves because it's going to have impact protection on the hand and then on the sides and hopefully the knuckles you know there's some types and different types of motorcycle gear out there the next spot is going to be the knee you see the knee right there you have armor impact okay we're not worried too much about abrasions just yet there's the left elbow so you have armor inserts on the left elbow in a motorcycle jacket and his right hand went down okay there we go now his left hip some motorcycle jeans and pants do have hip inserts so you want to make sure you have that and then we're going to keep going we're going to keep rolling or keep rolling now his left shoulder you know the forces are going to be transmitted into that make sure you have impact protection and then i don't think he ever hit his head but you're going to be bouncing around and it's not good now the bike is going to possibly be damaged you're going to want to have protection for your bike so sliders crash guards you know maybe bendable levers that bend up in case of a crash especially if you're gonna be practicing this is why stunters have huge cages on their motorcycles because when they dump the bike it that's what gets hit not the actual pieces that you need right so i got right here what he said and it says i was fully at gat thankfully i dislocated and fractured my thumb and got surgery on it practicing wheelies u-turns and cornering so this is the area you want to do it in that's perfect man been riding for years but took about a year break maybe two so wanted to freshen up my skills i think i crashed because there wasn't enough room i panicked and slammed the front brake there you go see that's exactly it so make sure you have enough runoff if you're ever gonna do parking lot practice it make it as big as possible there's some parking lots where i don't do swerves i want to pick up speed and i need a long runway same thing with braking but when it comes to u-turns figure eights tight turns from the stop stuff like that you can actually do that in about three parking spaces so that right there you don't need a lot of room but yes for swerving for wheelies for any type of stunting you do want to have a large amount of room i'm going to tell you guys right now churches on the weekdays schools on the weekends typically have good parking lots with a huge parking lot and they're typically open around that time okay thank you gompa style for for allowing me to use this footage and giving us some context you know dislocated and fractured thumb you think about you know right there a skier's thumb breaking it not good so remember guys breaking very important to do progressive brake pressure you don't lose it secondly do this in a parking lot minimize as much hazards as possible when it came to this thirdly wear full gear when you're out practicing because things can happen on or off the street especially if you're practicing okay because you're trying something new oh [Music] so ajhd actually gave me some context here and right away you can kind of see that there is some type of discoloration in the road now when you're actually riding it's really hard to see it's not something that you're going to pick out right away you know have enough time but this is also something you need to be paying attention to you need to see what type of road surface area is you know it could possibly kill you could be it could be grass clippings it could be gravel could be snow black ice oil water whatever it is a big old two by four a naked lady in the middle of the road you're gonna run over all these different things could cause a problem especially in your path of travel so right here very difficult to see so i mean he couldn't see it in time and that's what happened so there was some type of oil loss and if we watched yesterday's video when the guy did the wheelie came down and then dumped the bike because he slammed the brakes and i talked about seeing those handlebars move that's exactly what it looks like from the point of view of us if we're riding the handlebars just kind of dump down now this was caused by an external force so it's going to be caused by the road surface now what happened with the guy in the wheelie was a panic brake so two different kinds of traction loss two different reasons of traction loss but this is one of them so he's going to go ahead and dump the bike and i really want to talk about what happened here so he was able to hold on to it which is pretty cool but he said he thought he was all right now what he said in here is that yes i had full gear on after my first crash where i melted all the skin on my right arm off i have always gone out in full gear very good so he learned from his lessons armored chinos with kevlar inserts proper jacket bike boots etc my hip took a huge hit regardless of me having hip protectors on it too now he says if you could please please talk about the absolute stupidity of carrying a disc lock or any chunky metal in your pockets while riding or thick bracelets i mean even like my watch right here on your wrist the disc lock probably caused the hip damage i had also or i had a similar crash where that made me high side last april where i fractured my wrist the one with the thick bracelet on even though i had full gear on so that right there is exactly what i talk about when you have stuff in your pockets it can create a leverage on your soft tissue can actually cause soft tissue damage but it can also cause uh fractures in your bones so be very careful of what you keep in your pockets if you can put as much you can in backpacks but i can see why somebody would put something in their pocket it's just easy but just be aware of that understand that just in case this type of stuff happens to you i really just want to showcase ajhd's comments about not having stuff in your pockets now there's not much we can do about this situation you can see somewhat of a discoloration if you do notice that your best bet is to try not to go towards that line and that's going to be a hard thing for a lot of people even me is that as soon as you see that you're kind of looking at it and guess what you look where you want to go and if you're looking at it you're going to go towards it so so the best thing you can do is notice it with your focus and as soon as you recognize that it's like okay cool and then you're gonna go off and look over to the left side look through the turn like you typically would and then maneuver yourself kind of away from that there's not much you can do this is a terrible situation and here's the thing a car can handle this easily because guess what if you lose a little bit of traction on one tire you got three more to pick up the slack on a bike if you lose that front tire or even that rear tire you're gonna have a bad day hopefully be able to recover but that's not what happened here so make sure you guys are fully geared to make sure you have good situational awareness and you're staying focused on where you need to go and then don't look at these things but still try to recognize that's a hazard let's move on okay i just want you to see what's happening here okay we have a bunch of traffic this is where things start to go from yellow stage to orange stage and we really shouldn't be lane filtering at this high speed why do we lane filter to get into the front it's not because we're impatient it saves our back end just in case we're going to get hit it also allows us to move to the front so less congestion on the road but this is definitely not the opportunity to take it and we should be taking a lot slower because we can't see very far we can't swerve left or right and we don't know what people are going to do so we need to slow it down a little bit and that's not what's happening here it's not what's happening to these riders they are more impatient going into white and yellow stage when they should be in orange and red stage right here red red lights everywhere you know brake lights are huge there it is huge indicators that there's going to be a big problem coming up okay so if you notice right here why would a vehicle switch lanes okay why would that vehicle switch lanes in front of the motorcyclist well they wouldn't be able to see the motorcyclist even if they check the mirrors maybe they have some type of inattentional blindness maybe the familiarity check is not there and the whole point of that is that car drivers look for other cars it's as simple as that they're driving a car they're looking for cars motorcyclists look for other motorcyclists pedestrians i don't know what they look for they don't even look at anything other than their phones but that's the thing is that whatever you're doing that's what you're looking for now inattentional blindness is kind of the same thing the brain literally does not see the motorcyclist because there's too much information being processed and it's like we don't need to care about that we need to care about the hundreds of cars that are out here so all those things combined really makes it to where we're invisible so i hear about you know pretend you're invisible while on the road no no no no don't pretend you're invisible ride like nobody can see you there's a big difference you don't want to ride around like you're invisible that means you can sneak in and out and be the invisible man that's not good what you want to do is make it to where people can't see you but you want them to see you okay so you want to be going to speed limit you want to be presenting yourself you want to move around in your lane position before an intersection you want people to see you bright colors high vis good modulating lights maybe some underglow if it's legal wherever you are you want people to see you so don't ride around like you're invisible ride around like people can't see you and then you want them to see you so you're gonna do your best to make that happen but right here is a big problem okay that car moved over because his lane was going slow this lane was moving boom i'm gonna move over simple as that that's what i would do but i'd pay attention if there's motorcyclists because i'm a motorcyclist and i look out for them so we're gonna move forward just a little bit you're gonna see that rear tire just kind of slide so he swerved to the right when he saw that vehicle and then he's trying to go swerve back into the lane into the lane filtering position but he's locked up that rear tire so you're not turning anywhere you're just sliding to where you know you're originally pointed so when we hit this right here just remember that's a possibility that's where i really want you guys to understand this is a huge possibility that could happen in lane filtering especially at high speeds and not knowing how to do progressive brake pressure and really only doing this because you like going straight and like going fast and then going weaving in and out of traffic your ego your your everything gets boosted up your adrenaline you're you're chasing adrenaline you're not chasing safety you're not going from point a to point b as safe as possible if you do stuff like this so guys if you're brand new to riding it might sound obvious but there's gonna be a point in time where you're gonna feel like you know what i wanna do some crazy stupid stuff this is the reality you could easily do crazy stupid stuff and then get really really hurt for a crazy stupid reason so let's not do that guys [Music] wow i notice he has a foam mount i can't tell what kind of foam mount but it's probably not a rock form but you can definitely get a rokform mount and phone case using code dan dan 25 25 off your order so if you buy the actual phone mount you pretty much get your phone case for free i absolutely love mine i have mine right here and i have my little pop socket adapter hey oh you don't make fun of me all you want but i absolutely love it it's magnetic so i can attach it to things and it's a lot of fun you know it's like sitting right there right anyways let's go ahead and jump into this one so right away we have the sun to our back so always think about conditions involved okay can you see very far around this curve not really you got this median here so is this the best lane positioning for this turn think about it guys you're out in the mountains you want to get your best lane position but then you're also out here treat this like the mountain don't speed but treat this like the mountain to where you can get in a good lane position good vision okay so that's the biggest thing have good vision right here is good vision so often more on the outside don't go all the way in is the best vision but also when it comes to vision why are we so concerned about it well we want to see as far as possible because we're traveling at a high speed at high speed we need more distance view distance so we can make reactions now if we're going slow let's say five miles an hour we don't need a huge vision we don't need a long distance of riding so small speed small division big speed big vision okay so you're starting to follow along here so if we have to around these curves let's go ahead and get smaller speed so we don't need as much vision to react in okay so right here boom uncommon thing common situation can barely see it but it's definitely the sides of vehicles and sides of vehicles should not be on the interstate so that's what's causing a lot of problems so now what do we do here we start rolling off the throttle we start applying brake pressure standing the bike up seeing what's happening and then navigating around it and these guys do a great job okay so this person right here unsure what happened maybe they were going at a higher rate of speed and they found something they're able to stop in time because they saw it ahead of time and good thing that they did stop but you can also still navigate around so either way did a great job especially with a passenger on the back your stopping distance is actually more because you have more weight and you also have to be very careful because hopefully that person behind you hopefully did a pre-ride you know talk with the person you know hey when we stop this is what's gonna happen we swerve is what's gonna happen don't get on or off unless i say so all these different things i have a video in the description that talks about that but a very good job on keeping that person staying there especially in an emergency situation same thing right here you did a swerve out of the way very good very uncommon thing in a common situation but why is it uncommon there was an impact there was an injury there was an accident and it was around this blind turn maybe that's what caused the accident i don't know either way it's an obstacle in our path to travel on interstate with highway speeds and we had to navigate around it every single one of these riders did an amazing job every single one of these riders did what they were supposed to do got themselves out of the situation and i want to end the week on that this is amazing great job here you notice he went from 70 to 40 he doesn't have to slam the brakes or stop just have to slow down so you can gather as much information as possible with the much distance as possible you know for the speed right that way you're able to move out of the way you're able to brake you're able to stop you're able to do whatever it is you want to do with all those tools in your toolbox from training in a parking lot so he did a great job both of them all three of them all three riders i don't know if there's a fourth rider back there but then look at 27 miles an hour for you got a plenty of room on the interstate go ahead and pick up your speed or turn around and help out if there's injured people in those cars part of the smart rider principles is the our portion of rescuing other riders but you know what why don't we rescue car drivers too just in case with our medical training so pretty typical that's what happens all the time when we're motorcycle riding or car driving and we're going to go into a parking lot and vehicles come out okay it's pretty simple but i want to go over some of the things that i look for so that none of this is a surprise and i don't get a little agitated or anything like that i still say they're dumb dumb drivers but it doesn't ruin my ride and it doesn't ruin the rest of my day so we're gonna move forward just a little bit and there it is there's that pattern we talk about this all the time during the live streams this should not be anything new to you if you watch the live streams tuesday wednesdays and thursdays but the sides of the vehicle is a pattern it's the thing that you need to look out for because right here is the moment you can see it and we have a couple seconds until we get to the intersection so those couple seconds can really determine where your escape path is it can determine if you're going to break or swerve or it's going to determine if you need to focus on this hazard because not all hazards are things that you need to focus on are we focusing on the wet road right there that's a typical hazard if you have your tire on it not really if you're off to the side you mitigated that hazard so we're going to try to mitigate the side of this vehicle so right here moving forward just a little bit now i know a lot of people are saying well the person pulled out and they were looking right at me they were looking right at me so now we're going to go into some of the things that could play into that so this is for car drivers and it's also for motorcyclists so car drivers typically don't look for and see motorcyclists they might put their face and their eyeballs on you in that direction but their brain is not saying focus on that it's saying focus on the target hazard focus on the things that are going to kill you so what's happening is the brain is removing you and looking for cars okay inattentional blindness there's also motion induced blindness where you blend in with the background that's not moving so there's all these different psychological things with our brain basically to boil it down is there's only so much our brain can input and process and then output into our body okay so that's basically what it is and when we're out driving there's too much to put into our heads and into our eyes for our brains to process it so as a car driver they can't do everything okay as much as you guys think you can multitask we just can't do it as well especially at a high rate of speed or even in a parking lot speed so as motorcyclists we have way more stuff to deal with way more stuff than a car driver so it's actually harder for us and that's why we need highest training higher skill caps everything okay but that's typically why a car driver won't see us so as car drivers if you're watching as a car driver start looking for motorcyclists okay that's called the familiarity check there's a huge name for it it's going to pop up on screen i can't pronounce it basically if you're looking for something like say you want to buy a motorcycle you're going to start seeing motorcycles on the road all the time same thing for me i'm looking at vans i want to buy a van or buy a truck i'm looking and finding them everywhere on the road that is the problem that motorcyclists have is that car drivers just don't look for us because they don't care as much in terms of i'm going to get hurt by them because they typically see cars out on the road big huge discussion big huge explanation but i hope that makes a ton of sense so with that knowledge and when we see this pattern okay we're going to reduce as much as we have to focus on if we can just see a pattern we don't have to see we don't have to care if they're looking at us if they have their blinker on all this bull that we shouldn't be caring about we should just look for this little pattern because typically this precedes a path of travel violation and that's what we're going to have here is that driver looked left right left right whatever couldn't see us because with motion induced inattention or whatever whatever familiarity check and then they start to go but there's that pattern that side of the vehicle last second they did see us and then they stopped so this right here should give you pause and be like okay well now what are you going to do all right i got to pay attention what are you going to do you're gonna stop okay i'm gonna go ahead and go on with my day it's gonna be a non-issue if you understand that this driver just wasn't paying attention or maybe they were paying attention just didn't see you because the brain couldn't handle it i don't know maybe they ate too much mcdonald's and then had a brain fart but here's the thing guys i want you to be a little bit more compassionate towards other drivers i want you to be a good advocate for the motorcycling community and help out drivers to see us so the best thing we could possibly do is literally say look out for motorcyclists so the main thing here is just be safe and understand that this type of stuff is not of ill intent it literally is our brain deceiving us okay guys with that said hope you guys ride safe be safe and i'll see you out on the road
