[Music] in lexington kentucky inside rupp arena where the kentucky wildcats are 153-8 since john calipari's arrival a decade ago hosting the winthrop eagles the favorites out of the big south conference this afternoon with mark wise kevin fitzgerald with you three and one start for the wildcats and with the one loss being to duke on the surface that looks pretty good coach cal still pushing for improvement well john calipari has built a a relationship with his players over the year and they get better as the season goes along with referring to something called the process well today we're going to define the process and also quantify it by looking at these four areas who starts who plays with who defensive commitment and shot selection today mark kentucky goes with its fourth different starting lineup and now in the fifth game there's nick richards he is back at the starting lineup [Applause] along with emmanuel quickly tyler hero kelden johnson and pj washington well part of this process because some guys play better as starters some guys play better off the bench it's a continual process you are not a finished product in november and contrary to what a lot of people think here in kentucky kentucky did not lose the ncaa title opening night november 6 to do partner we've got a long way to go fifth game of the year here's that starting unit for the wildcats hosting winthrop a strong team from the big south conference in kentucky and that lineup clearly has some height advantage tyler hero leaves one for pj washington and he elevates this is going to be the challenge for winthrop the length of kentucky around the rim both offensively and defensively winthrop essentially playing with four guards kyle zunik on the drive out to bjorn broman and the eagles may have to hit a bunch of those threes early tyler hero in rhythm down and out he's the freshman from suburban milwaukee he's got a sweet shot struggling a little bit here in the early going just three for 14 now that's what winthrop wants to do get feet in the paint look for kickouts extra pass they're going to make the kentucky bigs guard out on the floor and in that starting lineup that is the tallest player who just hit the three josh ferguson from miami b.j washington with the first basket for the wildcats unselfish this time mckeldin johnson who's always playing in a fourth gear the five-star freshman one of the challenges for john calipari early on he feels like his team is getting good shots at the arc they're just not knocking down those shots 33 from bonus land teams four games in the year certainly outscoring kentucky from beyond the arc that's where their opponents are taking a bulk of their shots nick richards but he got the size advantage going to the big fella well when you catch the ball and both feet are in the paint good things are going to happen that's the challenge again for the eagles can they defend block the block [Music] nick smith in the corner for three left it short he leads the eagles with close to 20 points per game this year so watch out for zero in black zero no that's okay though that's an open look that's one john calipari wants him to take was talking about that with hero last night at practice [Music] and drive into the paint and michael anumba walks the ball back to the wildcats there's the hall of famer from moon township pennsylvania he was saying it yesterday in practice this is a perfect game for us we could see winthrop try to challenge us from beyond the yard and as you said a moment ago just another step to improve they're losing the three-point differential game on a nightly basis at an alarming rate washington he's whistled for the walk in the paint [Applause] washington has played much better the last couple of games got off to a slow start only 11 points in the first two but then the 25 point game against north dakota state and he followed that up with 19 more washington now guards the ball the shifty guard finds his teammate on the back door adam pickett who just checked in that's what lenthrop wants to operate offensively either score at the rim with some back door action or look for the open three and now they guard man to man richards well it hit his left hand while he was in the paint both feet in there out of balance pat kelsey is the 43 year old from cincinnati no other big south team has won more games in winthrop since he entered that conference and i don't know where pat cal seems kelsey's seat is on the bench but kevin i promise you he will not be in it he will be up and down the sideline today he coaches with intensity you and i were very impressed with his practice yesterday high tempo that's the way the eagles like to play [Music] they are selected as the second best team of the preseason in their conference washington nice shot and he's got a couple baskets good offensive patience by the wildcats that time there's the drive and the kick ferguson has got two triples to the top of the key and a one-point game a few minutes in it's such a unnatural thing for a big guy not to help defensively hiro leaves it for e.j montgomery [Applause] i don't think tempo pace will be a problem today [Music] it's a nice action cutting to the rim again but montgomery wipes the shot away [Applause] from beyond the arc but he's already knocked down a couple [Applause] now the wildcats are hitting for beyond the arc but when they get into the paint look out pj washington wildcats up six you got it you got it kid what are we saying every time catch it shoot it drive it or get rid of it oh there you go there you go there you go red bingo [Applause] john calipari the very reserves love that john calipari and remember he holds that annual pro day every october the number speaks for itself 31 former players on opening day rosters this year every year he's putting a handful into the nba and he recruits players that have a lot of voices in their heads that graphic right there tells you he's the one voice that every player on his team ought to be listening to [Music] kentucky's going to get the basketball after the turnover the 35 draft picks 35 taken in the nba draft since calipari arrived and remember this is now his 10th year you were at that practice yesterday why is the advice so strong what stands out to you that those players need to lock onto well he's talking about the process and we're going to be talking about the process in terms of getting better and he was talking to the players hey if you're playing better and and i substitute another guy in you've got to understand the rotation there's so many things that these young players have to learn coming to a program like kentucky washington shot off the mark and coming to grips with the ups and downs of a season no doubt about it [Applause] so friday kentucky is back in action they're going to host tennessee state right here in rough arena that's a 7 eastern tip 6 central and also catch it on the espn app anywhere so kentucky has got tennessee state coming up monmouth unc greensboro then it's going to face seton hall up in madison square garden so a few more games to get prepared of course opening the season against duke well again coaches don't want to admit this but they all look at their schedule in terms of groupings and kentucky is in this group of seven games at home where they can get a lot better oh look at reed travis bulldoze into the paint he's got one more came out the bench in the last game with 22 and six look at the smash mouth hoops by reed travis inside so powerful and attacking the rim he's scoring about 15 a game it leads the club now look he's got the the glasses pulled up he's going with the athletic goggles today misfires on the free throw a couple days ago against vmi got poked in the eye so now he takes quad a greens old look he went with the athletic guidance at one and this one's going to go back to the wildcats winthrop not afraid to attack under pat kelsey they want to push the ball after makes or misses there's pat kelsey working the sidelines we were at practice last night would you say he was energetic he's demanding yeah he kind of commands that respect from his players his teams have averaged 20 or more wins during his six seasons it is difficult to succeed sustained pardon success like that he is much more comfortable playing off the ball this year and what a bonus is not to have one double figure score off the bench but two and now the break quad he wants another travis the offensive board brought the ball down nice job stripping it away that was jermaine ukebu and then the whistle basketball green was certainly feeling it he wanted that second triple this is nick smith on the other hand way off the mark so ashton hagans with the ball into the game for the first time emmanuel quickly on the other side of the floor now the threes are falling for the wildcats nice feed by travis unselfish play but here's the response by the eagles it is chuck falden he's got a chance for the four-point play [Music] cal was talking to his team yesterday about getting back and how quick winthrop would attack in transition not much there in terms of a foul by quickly well but what will upset cal is the lack of awareness on the defensive end because that's all they talked about with wemtra in terms of how quick they would attack how they would attack the rim and kick out he wants us guys to understand in the process that we talked about at the open one of those parts is understanding the scouting report that's part of the defensive [Applause] commitment the georgia gatorade player of the year feeds washington nice look to travis two-handed jam now back on defense attract the double dump down good execution big to big smith he does slash quite a bit he's the senior from memphis now he's got the ball [Applause] dribbling into traffic [Applause] [Music] so winthrop doing a fine job of moving the ball around the perimeter creating shots but they've had trouble with nick with reid travis and there's a foul on the floor travis is just a load right now in the paint foul a moment ago on nick smith travis transferring from stanford he's the fifth year senior travis comes to set the screen for juane green down to the block travis again already three for three from the floor six points that ball out of bounds careless pass in kentucky leads by 10. hard to stop him how about the big to big action washington to travis wildcats they're up big us native kentuckians we're passionate about a lot of things including a day at the races here at historic keeneland kentuckians are also passionate about their bourbon so much so that you can have a pretty good time along the world famous kentucky bourbon trail but if you were born at central baptist hospital like i was about a mile down the road from kentucky's campus there is one passion that stands above all the rest and that passion is basketball and here in lexington it's kentucky basketball the craziness the obsession how do i know all about this because i lived it i grew up here i went to games at memorial coliseum i listened to games called by the late great haywood leopard yes kevin the passion for basketball that i have was born right here oh the old play by playboy so the wildcats hey mark just grab a hot brown on your way back maybe grab me one as well let's make it two kentucky has won 95 percent of its games in this building since john calipari was named the head coach lexington as mark pointed out wonderful city not just for its basketball culture nicely done mark visiting the woodford reserve as well travis has been a load underneath attracting attention and another foul call all right so saturday at 10 eastern 9th central the sec nation traveling pregame show heads to where else tuscaloosa for the iron bowl it's the 83rd edition auburn 7-4 but of course alabama number one in the college football playoff rankings at 11 and 0. all right kentucky who you got in that football game by the way or are you just looking forward to that sec title game the next week just to see about that alabama georgia matchup rematch if you will there's the length of kentucky again out in the passing lane look at pj washington running the floor the sophomore came back for another year after entering his name into the nba draft pool he withdrew to improve his game improve the leadership and he's off to a fine start today and what cal wants to see are more of these kinds of plays in terms of utilizing your length on the defensive end again getting into the passing lane making the deflection leads to good things on the other end [Music] todd [Applause] so here's kelvin johnson back into the game the freshman from south hill virginia according to our espn top 100 he is the highest rated recruit that john calipari brought in this year what do you make of kelden's game early in the year well again is there any real difference between number 10 and number 20. i mean these guys are so talented they're so elite in terms of what they bring to the table however they do not make it to the next level without going through the process bjorn broman and johnson skies for the rebound he brought the ball down and then felden knocked it away i think this is a foul on johnson because faldon was the first one to the deck i always say if you want to win a 50-50 ball be the first guy to get your elbows dirty and after the deflection watch as faldon gives up his body first and then johnson piles on [Applause] already six points [Applause] [Music] johnson gives 110 on both ends of the floor but falden hits the shot with his hand in the air mcalden just averaging 6.3 on the year off to a quick start he had that four point play after he hit the triple and was fouled earlier nice defense by anumba that time here come the eagles this is smith's shot swiped away that was richards [Music] hero in the corner on the drive hanging in the air and he's got two free throws hero is down on the floor took a hard spill baseline side rim protection on one end attacked the rim on the other take another look baseline drive gets hit while he's up in the air that's always a dangerous play and just kind of lands awkwardly john calipari was just giving inclusive praise to nick richards for being a rim protector on that last possession and drive by smith here's nick richards a sophomore from jamaica yeah he came to the states or came to uk a little behind take another look the length of nick richards swats that away which leads to the transition opportunity on the other end so that's his seventh block in five games kentucky and especially john calipari wants even more of that rim protection and the officials came over and let us know because that was a common foul hero had to be substituted for and going back to the locker room so the opposing coach by rule gets to choose which player on the floor he wants to take the free throws and since nick richards was only two for three on the year he chooses him and richards does what he's supposed to do he's an 80 free throw shooter now we'll keep you updated on hero's status as best as we can great shooter a freshman from milwaukee on the other end the eagles they could make 10 or 11 threes a game today that's their average a misfire there johnson he likes that corner too strong and pick it with the rebound slashing the italian he was spinning around richards [Applause] quickly leaves it for johnson hit at the rim and most likely two free throws coming it wasn't necessarily great spacing because the handoff came in the lane between two kentucky players but it all works out good because of their aggressive style of play especially in transition do they like to get it up and down or what take another look watch the bad space you see there's not enough room there i'd like to see the big guy get more to the baseline as the guard is coming in transition so that now you're able to already be facing the passer maybe despite the congestion kentucky six of seven from the free-throw line now enough 15. ferguson likes his shot from straight away and rebound down to washington and you said it they're going to run a green oh how did he bank it in what a play roman corner three left it way short and p.j washington who had that near 20 rebound game a couple nights ago all over the glass offensive foul though on richards let's go back to the green finish watch his eyes if we get the chance even though he takes the hit he sees that ball all the way to the rim and to the prize watch his eyes look at him follow that through oh that is great stuff that right arm was down by his hip before he vaulted it back at the window and you're right you mentioned this earlier he's much more comfortable off the ball this year he's playing with a little swagger at that two guard position so you could see it oh no question you could see it in practice yesterday a part-time starter last year was asked to run the point quite a bit now more the two-man jermaine ukebu he's the forward the senior off the bench and winthrop cannot afford either of its bigs ukebu ferguson even an enumba to get into foul trouble early already down 15. johnson a catch in the paint a wild shot and montgomery comes away with it new 30. johnson at the line for two oh absorbing the contact that's the old fumble it around play re-gather it 30 feet from the basket find a teammate underneath pass out is deflected bullet pass inside pagans with the fine [Applause] five games in still teaching quite a bit we saw three freshmen two sophomores in that starting lineup the process that we talk about doesn't just go game to game it goes practice to practice week to week month to month so you're going to see cow up the entire game because it is all about the process of getting better better both individually and collectively as a group how about the ball movement here from winthrop and nick smith converts about five feet away how creative is he though so explosive has to overcome his size in a game like this just five foot 10. that's his first field goal he has a handful of assists [Music] 26 at a loss to east tennessee state there's a foul that'll take us to a timeout so kentucky converting inside converting out 13-point lead [Music] inside rupp arena kentucky shooting 65 from the field off to a fast start a couple of the young freshman performing very well as you would expect the second rated recruiting class in 2018 led by kelden johnson he's nearly into double figures already ej montgomery he's that modern big man a stretch four who runs the floor very well you got a shooter in tyler hero emmanuel quickly runs the point all right professor what do they need to work on before sec play well they're in this stretch of seven games where i'm calling it lab work where you can do some experiment you can experiment with your starting lineups with your substitution rotation ten different combinations of players have played the majority of minutes for uk and coach cal this year the defensive commitment that's something that has to get better game by game and then shot selection you know every player that cal recruits comes in thinking what i'm calling an arrogance about them shooting that every shot is a good shot and then you go through a doubtful phase where you are hesitant because of what the coach is telling you is this a good shot you're thinking too much and then you become a confident shooter and the confident shooter understands instinctively when it's my turn to shoot because it comes out the framework of the offense we had a good conversation with coach kyle about that yesterday at practice it's the instincts and also remember you've got to visualize your shot you can't catch a man at this level say now i'll create he is urging his players hey make sure you see the passing lane make sure you get to the spot and get ready to shoot before you even receive the ball the little things that's what you're talking about the little things the little things are practice habits and you do not gather those habits in games you must establish those habits practice those habits to where they become second nature good to see tyler hero back into the game landed awkwardly on his bottom attacking the rim he lets it fly he looks all right to me he needs to land on his hip more often he's being very aggressive with his shot today which is something cal really encouraged him to do at practice yesterday there's more example of the link emanuel quickly probably fouled there by nick smith i think this is gonna get overturned because it was the deflection first no foul call it is yes just a straight deflection it was last touched by emmanuel quickly ball back to pat kelsey's team they're down 14. pat kelsey needs track shoes he does not need dress shoes if you switch fitbits with him you look like he had a good day [Music] basically a four guard look for winthrop one to shoot nick smith didn't get it off eagles shooting well but a little late that time nice job defensively defensively by kentucky laid in a possession we talk about offensive patience so much so many times in a possession late in a clock there's also such a thing as defensive patience dj montgomery you mentioned he can stretch the floor back pedaling on defense as smith drives in transition zunik might have walked yep the second foot slipped the australian gives it away now the eighth winthrop turnover as any coach who ventures into this atmosphere and takes on this team kelsey was pretty steadfast with we can't turn the ball over as much as we have to this point of the year i found it interesting to listen to pat kelsey about what he told his team about the boards when he said hey if you can't get the boards then bat it around see if you can keep it alive and will win the 50-50 ball how about the drive by hagins that time the freshman smith the shot's been a [Applause] yeah he has to work so hard to get a look what's kentucky doing they're just utilizing their length they're making him be a driver and they're driving him to more length travis working on ferguson unselfish to hero who wants it that was a hot potato so this goes back to winthrop on the floor right now reed travis for kentucky bjorn broman for winthrop they were on the same aau team back in 2013. the howard pulley panthers administer minnesota's finest here that's fun stuff fun to watch pat kelsey said i need to find more scoring opportunities for broman that everybody knows they've got to close out on him quicker and higher so they're looking to see how they can free him up in different ways he's a natural scorer he and his brother anders they're still minnesota state's scoring leaders at the high school level and there is mr broman staggered double on the weak side frees up bremen offensive foul on reed travis [Applause] first foul on the minneapolis native he had some position on uk boo and perhaps was a little aggressive [Applause] catching deep in the paint well here's a change because they put broman at the point so let's let's see if he can find another they're going to run the same play the other side staggered double watch this last possession as broman comes off the stagger double that's a wide open look you're talking about a guy in bjorn borman broman who has made a living at the ark but i find it interesting because he was the point guard so he initiated the offense and then the offense came back to him a four-year starter so we're seeing he played multiple positions he could shoot but he's caught another he's got a little swagger back on defense now winthrop has it back to a 10-point game getting late in the first you mentioned this is perhaps the conference champion in the big south this year that's how strong this team is there's a foul on ferguson and this is called a cylinder foul by the official which means the defender violated the offensive players cylinder little handoff quickly gets caught going under roman now with back to back three balls seven triples for winthrop that has been a theme and kentucky fans cover your ears remember vmi hit 19 19 threes on sunday now kentucky outscored them they won 92-82 it's been a little concerning another in the year austin awa the senior from melbourne florida with his first look a little wide hero long two that is his sweet stroke this is by far the most aggressive i've seen hero offensively this season shooting in rhythm and with confidence he's gone for about 10 a night this year four games in nice drive to the bucket adam pickett he's one of the three seniors in winthrop's starting lineup green is wide open broman comes down with it winthrop can cut it back to single winthrop has digits the three ball to stay in this game pick it shields green away [Applause] again hiro can even run the point [Music] foul on hero and they're going to say it was an offensive foul on the screen hero is shooting in confidence tonight getting us a little rub screen knocks down the jumper cats are up 10 at home [Applause] all right so saturday it's the last week of the regular season a full slate of course right here on the sec network georgia tech georgia the in-state rivalry tennessee and vanderbilt one of those teams is going to punch a ticket to bold eligibility the other will not and then a ranked battle lsu and texas a m finishing it off at 7 30 eastern time so take a look at the standings football conference right and these are the bowl eligible teams in the sec this season and there is going to be one more added both vanderbilt and tennessee sitting at five and six so 11 of the 13 teams that are eligible to go to bulls this year in the sec are most likely going to get invited that's for sure you know being a native kentuckian kentucky fans are thankful for a lot of things but that's what they're most thankful for kentucky hoops but how about the football program they've had a marvelous season here mark stoops and company finishing it up with louisville this weekend are you going with the hot brown tomorrow at the thanksgiving family meal no no no no all tradition all tradition tomorrow by the way happy thanksgiving well happy thanksgiving to you as well and to everyone out there we wish you the safe travels the next couple days kentucky gets a day off but then it's going to play on friday it's a tight tight turnaround for the this is what we're wildcats about the defensive commitment is not turning your head defensively kelden johnson to the right of your screen see him turn his head then gets beat back door and that's what leads to the foul those are the kind of plays that they are trying to work on in practice to increase their defensive efficiency and it's worth reminding hey this is only the fifth game to this very very young team higgins johnson travis washington green on the floor for kentucky travis has been a menace down low they find him washington up and under he scores that's just good team offense but spacing leads to good decisions there was a feed from washington to travis for a bucket earlier in the game very thankful and he returns the favor gives it right back to washington unselfish play see the guys in white see how space star they out they are now that's much better as they get into their horn set which means two guys at the high post johnson off the screen shimmy's in travis the follow and you have washington on the other side weak side rebounded the score with 90 seconds left but a hockey assist for weed travis he's the one who kept that play alive ferguson boy went right into a brick wall that time look out travis lost it on the way up he's heading to the line for two take another look as i talked about offensive execution good spacing the throw over the double team comes from the weak side travis reads that pass underneath is on point and washington with the easy finish but that all came about because of good spacing on the offensive end which leads to good shot selection part of the process that this kentucky team is going through at least offensively they look very cohesive tonight moving the ball they're taking advantage of the things that they should take advantage of meaning their size block the block 62 from the field yeah nothing wrong with the offense all right so coming up in halftime remember we just took a look at the schedule mississippi state tennessee they have big tests this weekend on the gridiron and of course we'll break down the numbers from big blues first half mississippi state and ole miss for the egg bowl tomorrow there was a foul on that free throw even though it was made i wish officials would call more of these i think green was guilty of just loading in from behind usually you get away with that officiating crew tonight todd austin will howard kb luckily for that trio they all have thanksgiving with their families and then back to work on friday right there just loading in good call [Music] [Applause] could not convert winthrop trails 15. [Applause] [Music] 50 points for kentucky the season high in the first half mark you alluded to it a couple times already in this half great spacing and the offense has performed very well i really like washington in the high-low set there because he caught the ball at the high post and didn't rush what he was doing so many times every player wants to catch the ball and put it on the deck immediately and what washington did was catch it and evaluate the sophomore from dallas he's improved he was teetering on the edge last may should i keep my in name nba draft he withdrew on may 30th and a big cheer let out from the big blue nation no question one thing he said though was i want to come back to become a better leader in addition to tuning my game as well he's going to get that opportunity [Applause] others like kevin knox alexander they left kentucky with the return of a player like washington and others like nick richards squad green bring back the most scoring from the prior year since the team that started 38-0 a few years ago could have gone two for one to close the half if they had gone quicker this is an illegal screen on richards up high because i really feel like pagans went too fast so many times the big guy just doesn't have a chance allow your big to come out and set that high ball screams [Music] [Applause] nick smith having a rough first half he scored 21 against vanderbilt earlier this year that's 10 seconds to play in the first half washington i want it but he couldn't finish three quarters court well short and winthrop doesn't shoot the ball too poorly in this half but kentucky was just too strong 62 percent from the field too much length on either end of the floor 14-point lead for kentucky pat bradley and darynoka in the studio when we come back [Applause] [Music] hmm [Music] kentucky was feasting in that first half inside outside of 14-point cushion over winthrop one of the favorites out of the big south conference visiting at the 10th ranked wildcats led by pj washington with 13 points has the double digit advantage and one of the things that the process of the development of this kentucky team has to understand is that they're going to get everybody's best shot every night and they're going to get it for a full 40 minutes so you have to play almost without looking at the scoreboard when you take a look early on this is what i feel like our strengths and concerns for kentucky their boards their lane getting to the free-throw line they have the defensive ingredients to be great and on the offensive end all things at the arc well the wildcats are plus 14 on the glass and to your point they've hit a bunch of threes in the first half a whistle immediately and the moving screen gives the ball back to kentucky so winthrop has to shut down to the turnovers what else does it need to do well again they've got to catch some breaks they've got to shoot unbelievably well in the second half from beyond er i want to go back to the defensive ingredients i think if you want to be great defensively you must have these three things you must have great team speed and kentucky has them you must have great length the ability to block shots at multiple positions and kentucky has that but the third one is all about are you committed are you committed each possession are you committed on closeouts are you committed one and done on the glass those are the things that kentucky is still a work in progress b.j washington got his hands in the passing lane good transition defense and that's more about the effort bringing it for 40 minutes yeah these young guys are so used to not playing defensively because they didn't have to in high school the aau circuit that's an unselfish play by quickly johnson couldn't hit nick richards he can close range look [Applause] nick smith a twirl johnson around richards back on d another block here's hero transition three got it defense gets great leads to great offense [Applause] broman on the drive he used his body well to get to the rim kentucky pushing again [Applause] 13 points and nine boards for washington he has the ball and his team is on a five-nothing run out of the gate to the second richards how did he get that open lefty shot off the window again great things happen offensively when ball reversal is involved kentucky executes offensively beautifully but it all starts defensively we talk about defensive commitment part of that is being rim protection richards knocks that away and watch the way heroes steps into this transition three and shoots this rhythm [Applause] we're talking to rex chapman before this one boy he is a big fan of tyler hero washington now with 15. too easy pat chelsea needs a timeout largest lead of the night kentucky up 23. so the cincinnati native pat kelsey needed a time-out the wildcats have gone on a nine-nothing run out of the second half so pat kelsey he's been the head coach in winthrop for seven years there is pat wearing number three he played at xavier for the late great skip crosser a lot of kelsey's success is owed to not only his time playing for skip but also coaching alongside skip with him at wake for six years and then moved on was an assistant at xavier with chris mack who's now coaching at the acc at louisville so those two gentlemen have shaped pat kelsey very impressive coach no one in the big south has more wins than winthrop since he has entered this conference high energy guy relates to his players he used the term last night in practice when he was talking about the different ways they were going to guard a screen he says we're going to throw a little ice cream at him he said we're going to give him a little vanilla a little chocolate a little strawberry you can go over under it was fabulous i was i was entertained sitting it's hard to find really anyone who has anything worthy to say about pat kelsey so it was maybe a couple years ago when when kelsey is at a an event a winthrop event in charlotte if a certain five-time pro bowler walks up to him lou keegley goes hey pat and pat stands back he goes how do you know who i am because i grew up in cincinnati you were my favorite player when i used to attend xavier games luke was a heck of a basketball player now back in the day pat was able to convince luke to help out the winthrop athletic department with some promotional videos promoting some upcoming games and he's on the video board that went through coliseum from time to time and that play brought cal up clapping with his team's execution because washington read excuse me richards ran read the devil team properly and started that ball rotation which led to the foul if anybody bought this kentucky team even with reed travis and his experience was going to be a finished product the first night and that's just not the case what did cal tell us yesterday at practice about the fact that he tried to hit the fast forward button because they played duke in the first game but that never works and so he's had to go back and they're working on defensive lunges in practice doing the little things creating good practice habits another turnover has the ball back to kentucky well that game was was no question hyped up to quite a large degree that duke against kentucky game two against four at the time remember that was november 6th we play into april you just saw a winthrop player go off the floor five fouls on jermaine uk boot he is gone [Applause] he is really the only height off the bench for winthrop hero fading away he left that one short now that shot i don't like why because he faded and consequently the shot was short set his feet go at the rim a little more goes straight up and down you should land in the same spot you took off in just like ferguson did in the corner i really like him you talk about a guy that's blossoming the all big south selection he's been a double figures in the first four games and there's a foul on awod so winthrop with the little life still trailing by 22. all right time to take a look at today's good hands play brought to you by allstate one of the things that every player has to learn is how can i impact winning without shooting nick richards does it on both ends first with the put back second chance opportunities and then with rim protection impact winning without having to shoot and that will please the head coach [Applause] [Music] one of the traditions here at kentucky in the second half is somebody comes out and finishes the spelling of kentucky and that was jack givens and i'll tell you a story now that you know that i am a native kentuckian we're the same age we're the same year in high school we actually played each other and our team held jack gibbons to 24 points and the only reason i know that is because he didn't play the second half they were so far ahead he didn't get off the bench he was at um and he and james lee were part of that team together lee played at henry play so a lot of good stuff here no no you shut him down in the second half that's how it went i like your version all right kentucky who's next it's tennessee state friday at seven right here on the sec network so this is why eric lindsay deb moore the sports information directors they're just ahead of the game so kentucky historically has faced more teams from tennessee than any other state with the win against north dakota last week kentucky has now defeated a team in all 50 states thank you eric and deb great nugget now the only state they do not have a winning record against is connecticut that's more recent in nature isn't it i do know this i know kentucky started basketball in o3 and from 03 to 08 their combined records for those years was 15 and 29 now that seems hard to fathom you can't picture cal on the sidelines at kentucky in 15 and 29. you see all the shots that kentucky are just getting up here in the second half national domination but you've known that side of the story for quite a while now kentucky is going to play that louisville team as it always does later in december the 29th that's at louisville that will be against the now newly coached team leading the charge excellent addition to the acc yeah what a higher that was ferguson [Applause] [Music] he put his right hand out to effect the pass then he drives in again your defense creates offense for the cats that time it was green with the deflection again more back door action that will not lose cow that's a one [Applause] johnson he was caught between a couple black jerseys from it running with falden missed the layup jump ball again let your defense help out your offense body green gets just fingertips on it shoots the gap anticipates that pass finishes it off on the other end remember at halftime winthrop had 17 points off turnovers kentucky's trying to turn that around here in the second frame kentucky no question playing at its pace today leading by 24 it's never really been that close wildcats got out to a double lead pretty quickly in the first winter is trying to slash back a few times and not been able to put together that sustained run but now they have the ball after the turnover i do like the way kentucky started this hat though the first segment came across the ring and landed some early blows i think that's a travel on faldon both sides very gracious giving it back to the other now in consecutive fashion what's he saying there to quad a you think don't force the action went baseline had nowhere to go [Music] travis was trying to post inside kentucky's really difficult to guard off this curl action look at kelden and the ball poked away it pinballed right back to fall that he was out of bounds though there was the old school yard play the wrap around he poked it loose he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar standing out of bounds so still kentucky ball but 14 to shoot here to washington no that's johnson with the jam much better decision by hero that time remember the last time he got into the pain he turned around took an off-balance still advised shot that time a more unselfish play and six assists for hiro maybe another bucket scores the lead continues to grow a-1 back to a 23-point game he has really launched some threes today shot the ball with confidence [Applause] [Music] pass too far for reed travis here's the inbounds play now watch hero 14 white get into the paint but find a teammate pocket pass baseline cut a kansas cut because they made that so famous their ability to go along the baseline and get behind the defender nice find by hero that's roommate to roommate there on the pass how about you know practice you watch kentucky practice those two are always the first two out of the four tyler hero kelden johnson that's a habit too coaches wish they didn't have to teach that habit those two really do look like they carry themselves like professionals even as eighteen-year-olds there's a push on ej montgomery so he's whistled for his first we talked about the different combinations of players that's one of the things that the players have to learn kevin you're not going to get on the court and play 12 straight minutes you're just not if you have a deep team then you want to utilize your depth but utilizing your depth means you've got to sit some oh what a pass number steals it back then he's got a potential three-point play it's the italian is at the line for one more we talked about unselfish play kentucky in the paint tyler hero to the teammate and johnson with the flush kentucky on top [Music] ten years now for john calipari at kentucky better than an 80 winning percentage the national title with anthony davis in 2012 and how about eight consensus all-americans like malik monk he's with the charlotte hornets now 35 nba draft picks over the last 10 years due to that process right yeah and this is the guy that the players have to trust this is the only voice that should be important to them because he's going to dictate who starts who plays with who and you're going to get to play and start if you have a defensive commitment and you understand shot selection but kevin i got to tell you that process that doesn't happen in a week it doesn't happen in a month that's why cal's teams he's built this reputation as a guy whose teams get significantly better throughout the year because and why is it more important for this process at kentucky than other places because of the constant roster turnover from one year to the next you can't the difficulty it is to pick up and go each year with sometimes an entirely different starting lineup so why is that a good shot it's a good shot but came out of the framework of the offense inside out action tyler hero with a dozen today pick it air ball in rhythm almost another would have given him 15. travis has it poked away onuma got his hand in there to strip it loose wildcats with possession shot clock at 19. let's watch for the look this time ej montgomery from 18 he can stretch the floor that's okay and okay possession he caught evaluated created the look quick hands montgomery pharaoh finds him i think it's the most difficult double double i think pat kelsey wants to timeout the most difficult double double because it's points and assists all right so thursday night at seven eastern marty and mcgee they have you covered with everything that's going on around the sec like everything else you can see them live on the espn app from anywhere [Music] even on thanksgiving they're out there for you working here's hero with the lob in transition easy little two-handed flush by montgomery [Music] look out that's a wild cat wearing the turkey hat i thought i've seen it all let's go around the sec five teams in the ap top 25 and of course three in the top ten auburn in tennessee the two others all 14 coaches mark that really stands out coached in the ncaa tournament and that has translated to recruiting success and one of the reasons why the sec this year has a chance to be as good and as deep as any other conference in the country and that has not always been the case it's amazing how you look back to just a couple years ago the sec had three teams in the ncaa tournament i believe 2016. the following year south carolina's in the final four last season eight teams a record for the conference making the tournament awad just continues to be a knockdown the number of lottery picks out of the sec now 19 from kentucky sure but they're booing the conference at the top this is travis creating space inside cal is saying he was grabbed from behind first hand-to-hand combat down in that high-rent district take a look at travis step in and present himself screen and then he steps in there's just not a lot there isn't that a play on two guys are battling for position neither one took advantage of the other how about reed's game translating to the next level he turns 23 in just a couple days so an early happy birthday yeah he has to show that he can make the three ball that's that's the one area of concern because the nba is about big guys who can shoot now remember the unselfish play hero to montgomery there's the return favor another shot altered at the rim winthrop has no chance gliding into the paint now 25-point advantage big to big and a foul underneath look at this the length of kentucky again creates havoc on the defensive end which leads to the run out but it's the return of a favor this time montgomery to hero corner three ball thank you very much the six blocks and the most recent ej montgomery essentially blocked at his hip doesn't it seem like more than six today it really does [Music] has been asking the players like nick richards i like ej montgomery to become that rim protector five to shoot [Applause] goes back to win for pennywise it's a play by anna pickett no question he was the one that dug back down watch pinker dig back down on this offensive play and then throw the ball back off leed travis pickett has had a hard time finding shots today though a small backboard for winthrop smith it's 5 10. pick it at 6-1 broman at six foot ferguson underneath and he's been a headache scored outside [Applause] now a little transition opportunity for chuck falden and he missed the layup he's right there he was in traffic and kentucky could slow it down [Applause] lead for kentucky the wildcats shooting 60 percent from the field [Music] wildcats shooting sharply tonight up 23 as we push later into the second half tyler hero what a night we talk about the process with hero and his shot selection he's been a confident shooter tonight he's been an instinctive shooter tonight and he's scored in a variety of ways but he's also been a helper because he has seven assists and he's played just 21 minutes and that's part of the process that cal is trying to get these players to understand you do not have to play 35 minutes here as a matter of fact you're not going to play 35 minutes here reed travis played 34 minutes a game last year at stanford he's averaging 22 minutes in his role here at kentucky how do you have to be built internally if you will to accept that challenge and go into this process of kentucky knowing that mature beyond your years but this is what reed travis wanted he feels like this is his best avenue to the next level well kentucky fans need to be patient with tyler hiro yes you're going to have some off shooting nights but this is what he is capable of and kentucky fans rest assured because he's going to deliver nights like this so a couple times this year he has recorded double figure shooting nights yarn broman has hit a bunch of those shots over the years the four-year starter tonight and hit a couple but winthrop is not as efficient from beyond the arc as they were in the first half and if you think cal is looking at the scoreboard and just sitting on the bench letting this play out you are badly mistaken he's at the edge of the coaching box scratch that he's above the coaching box you don't take practices off you don't take games off everybody makes threes for winthrop well now that's the 10th for the eagles to your point he will not sit there long i promise you he wants to see if his team can execute even with the score why because it might pay dividends down the road [Applause] his assistant coach is kenny payne and tony barbie they're getting an earful from cal as he watches 6 47 to go wildcats lead by 21. another full slate of college football on the sec network on saturday it's the georgia tech georgia annual rivalry at noon tennessee and vandy 2-5-16 teams pardon one is going to punch its ball eligibility ticket and then the top 25 battle lsu and texas a m hey by the way the old lsu coach right les miles perhaps interested in kansas waiting on that i want to finish my thought about cal and the process as you see right there talking to guys on the bench he was so animated with his team yesterday in practice in terms of challenging them to play the right way yes he could allow his team with the talent differential in this game to just go out and play but that will not help the team when they play utah it will not help the team when they play at louisville it will not help the team when they play carolina these major tests that kentucky has coming up before league play starts in january [Music] and remember kentucky plays tennessee auburn mississippi state those are the conferences pre-season picks two through four twice you play everybody in the league too excuse me you play five teams in the league two times how about that kind roll off the top of the backboard kyle zunik timeout kentucky immediately cal is not happy about closing out on the three balls in sec play you play every team you play five teams twice and let me finish that thought in a second take another look as this ball off the rim hits the top of the backboard and falls through and that three ball again another three by winthrop well i talked about the sec schedule there are five teams in the sec that you play twice annually and everybody else you only play one time well kentucky didn't draw any favors because they have tennessee florida auburn mississippi state and vanderbilt if you haven't seen darius garland play for vanderbilt you're in for a treat so yeah there's a lot of tests for this team coming up that's why the process is so important you mentioned darius scarlet who is another young star in this league that we're not talking about that sec fans are going to learn about very soon well andrew mimhart the point guard in florida now is another one that you're going to keep your eye on and there are several because your friend paul biancardi posted a thing that the sec had more top 100 recruits this year than any other league in the country hero is one of those top 100 recruits commit to wisconsin receives some interest from kentucky and he makes the change well they forgot about zunich who scores at the rim yeah that's a 15-point game that's being defensively [Applause] lazy johnson's pass knocked away by adam pickett there's a little intensity on that winthrop bench now 11 seconds on the shot clock i think cal's frustration with his team is rising higher and higher [Applause] this is again part of the process of learning you cannot take your foot off the gas when you're playing a team that's going to come at you for 40 minutes kelton johnson just ended the eight nothing winthrop run [Applause] back to zunich the hot hands the aussie scores again cal frustrated because johnson did not utilize his length defensively he was too close if you want to utilize your length as a defender you have to actually create space we've discussed it the offensive fluidity has been impressive today for kentucky to your point a moment ago defensively a couple hiccups in the second half and pj washington draws the foul cal screaming defense watch what i'm talking about here's the drive by zunic and watch as johnson just does not create any space he just kind of soft holds his hands up and cal went over that specifically in practice yesterday we show you this on video and you go hey i have my hands up but you didn't really challenge defensively and so that's considered taking a play off and that's what he's trying to eliminate is taking plays off who is a player you coached in years past that's a long time ago let's establish that that exhibited that though the high intensity on the defensive side and the all-out effort for all 40 minutes well at the end who would give you everything he had every single second wasn't the gifted most gifted offensive player but i never had to worry about that i never had to worry about his effort i never had to worry about his focus on the defensive end that's what cal has to change because he doesn't recruit guys that aren't gifted offensively all these guys come here with a wonderful set of skills on the offensive end but they are basically beginners defensively [Applause] [Music] now let's also say this winthrop is a really good offensive team really good travis roles [Applause] and here come the eagles down 15 with 3 25 to go in the game pick it lets it fly and hero with the strong board he has done a little bit of everything today maybe his finest game as a wildcat cj washington another strong night for the dallas native he has 19 so good in transition kevin but you don't get to transition unless you get stops baldin to ferguson knocked away and starts a break hero the transition three that would have been his fourth today blocking foul and shot quickly kentucky with an advantage blocked a block today one of the guys that has taken the biggest advantage pj washington the sophomore from dallas scoring with the sweeper in the lane we'll do what we do every year with our team is you know we'll be at the salvation army serving i think it's a great thing for these kids to be there and serve food and sign autographs and take pictures and and and touch people who are huge fans that um and i always say you know only with god's grace that's not us you know and i talk to him a lot about think about where you've come from think about what door you could have walked out of and that could be you and only by the grace of god that's not me and i could tell you my background where i could have walked that way instead of walking that way and that could have been me and so they get a chance to you know respect be humble and and i think it's good for the soul no question kentucky this basketball program is always has always been invested in the community so a wonderful initiative tomorrow so we hope you enjoy your thanksgiving salvation army at noon then practice then to cals for thanksgiving dinner the team goes well it's a way to give back to the passionate fan base isn't it to be oriented like that the act of service there has always been a stress on john calipari's over the years wherever they go whether it be in the bahamas for their early exhibitions in august community service efforts there here in lexington [Music] and so happy thanksgiving to all those watching safe travels wherever you are headed enjoy some football as well lsu and texas a m top 25 battle on saturday [Applause] here's what's impressive about winthrop this team is down 25 a couple times in the second half never quit i think that's a reflection of the head coach pat kelsey [Applause] a lot of bodies in the painting you talked about pat kelsey where is the jacket it's come off we talked about cal coaching without looking up to score pat kelsey and his staff have done the exact same thing second pick in the big south this year behind radford how about tubby smith coming back to big south he's now at high point coaching at his alma mater this winthrop team is no question in the tournament discussion they made the ncaa tournament when it won the big south tournament couple years ago [Music] nice move for adam pickett he's had a fine second half the senior from virginia i talked about in the first half he had trouble getting looks that was so creative and winthrop's offense he stressed his ball movement pat kelsey he is an avid researcher if you will he studies the golden state warriors loves what steve kerr has done now the initiative for golden state is 300 passes a game so pat kelsey says let's prorate it we're going to do 275. with one second to shoot kelvin johnson falling away paul the seventh three ball here gets it to 10. with 110 left [Applause] let's see if they can get one off pick it throws it away the interception on the baseline by washington i thought the first four minutes of the second half were really good kentucky's kind of taken their foot off the gas since [Applause] [Music] fell on winthrop [Applause] 38.7 and the wildcats remember they're going to practice tomorrow thanksgiving dinner they've got a game right back at it on friday against tennessee [Applause] again we're in the last minute of the game cal still up coaching to the end and players they should be playing to the end there's no such thing as a bad minute kelden johnson [Applause] pick it again with a marvelous creative move five games in kentucky starts four and one the offense shoots 56 percent from the field pj washington with 19. and a season high 56 percent shooting from the field today 13-point win over winthrop mark wise with
