super tuesday it's presented by boost mobile and tonight they have flocked a venerable rough arena in all different ways if you're a hall of famer you arrive on your own plane hop in a town car hours before the kids of big blue nation are all waiting if you're number 22 mississippi state it's a very short bus ride and you hope the next time you get on board you'll have a signature win if you're number 8 kentucky it's a familiar trip and this time you're riding the emotion of a big win saturday at auburn and if you're my friend laura and me it's a quick walk from the hotel swallowed by a sea of blue to one of the biggest stages in college hoops this of course is rupp arena laura you know all about it it opened in 1976 and it has been one of the greatest home court advantages in all of college basketball consider this calipari has coached 168 games here he's 160 of them that gets you into the hall of fame he's a hall of famer and so is dick vitell i'm gonna go join him now you better do that we don't want dicky v to be worried and coach cal is looking for a hall of fame performance from his team tonight with this home crowd behind them they're in one of the most brutal stretches schedule wise they've had in years of course they beat 16th ranked auburn on saturday 22nd ranked mississippi state tonight and then they'll face off against 9th grade kansas on saturday they're trying not to look ahead to that certainly but they do know that tonight will be about making sure they don't get involved with the size and the experience of mississippi state and let that be too much room a lot of these kentucky players said auburn was the toughest environment they had been in in quite some time cal thinks this team's ahead of schedule carl when he looks at the way that they've used their short amount of experience to galvanize each other that's right laura in fact coach bruce pearl said this team kentucky better than last year's team was at this point [Music] i would agree with that i'll tell you this i like the chemistry they have the balance they're deep i mean let's face it they lost some talented players last year certainly losing knocks they lose them every year don't say here's hagen's he drives a kick pj washington's first three no good and the offensive rebound that's a concern ben howell says kentucky's ability to hit the glass they get their first one nice cut without the ball you know you mentioned rebound here plus nine right now plus nine when you look at kentucky first time you don't see in the starting lineup he was supposed to start but instead the coaches mark number one instead so they stay with it to avoid a technical foul number one is the freshman reggie perry so a bit of a mistake by the coaches early here and they're gonna go with it and see what happens [Applause] contested three and that one drops in a really good start mississippi state take a look at kentucky's lineup after that nick weatherspoon three hagginson hero hero was the hero against auburn kelden johnson reed travis and pj washington turnover and the brother quindari witherspoon lays it in he said hey anything my brother can do i can do better he's one of the top five squares in mississippi state starkville john calipari has been really concerned with earl with their start they started fairly well though against spoiler but bottom line is they've struggled starting games hero good fake he fires away bottom of the net for tyler he was sensational against auburn he really played brilliant basketball he and johnson had 40 between them carl and they had to because auburn is really talented uh oh here we go held in john just like that they woke up hello hello what type of damage they get them every year here and i'll get them again next year you can feel the confidence in guys like hero growing can't you absolutely see a little swag to their game pagans who's just a great pick artist nearly had one there instead blocked from behind by travis they got numbers three on two ben holland is concerned with the transition game that's why they can hurt you many ways in transition run to the three-point line go to the basket dunk this is a good kentucky basketball team it's a good mississippi state team as well calvin johnson leading the team in scoring over 15 a game he's got four early wide open three way off offensive rebound too hard another follow blocked from behind again i think johnson got a hand on it to the rack lays it up and in and a foul that was a big-time move right there the way he's widened he slides he glides and he lays it on the glass and all the big blue nation goes bananas here's the steel nice steel and here goes the slam jam bam there it is like they're hanging in the air gets fouled you know he had that horrendous game when he was old for six years george yeah he judged he did the game he had a horrendous game but you know what he came back after showing a lot of heart and guts a lot of guys psychologically let a game like that really get the best of them now he of course was the guy challenged by ashton hagins we saw that on sportscenter higgins looked over to him and said wake up man he did they needed him lamar peters number two now into the game a terrific defensive player and he can create his own shot this is a terrific matchup hagans and lamar peters well peters could shoot the three as well there's a miss and hero one shot baby one shot this kentucky theme could read that i'll say something else they do exceptionally well and bed was concerned get to the free-throw line they really get to that line [Applause] hear that number dick how about 168 games in this building at least 160 of them he's 12-0 against mississippi state i said hey man man does he leave here 13-0 with a w tonight or is he 12-1 i hope he's 12-1. a lot of guys hope it's tough to beat kentucky on this floor there's a steal and they got more numbers johnson again looked like he took off a little too early and lost the ball on the way up yeah he really has lost his steps good pass down low and that's quindary weatherspoon who lays it in his brother with the assist say one thing q is really a talented player he won that game for them against florida florida played him so tough but at the end he went the length of the court with a drive and a three-point play to win that game they lost their first two sec games won the next two [Music] a handoff to hero he's got his man wide open washington oh and he missed the dunk they missed their last two bunnies you know frustrated right there he's got a great physical presence i personally i said it the other day i don't know about you i look at his numbers and i think his numbers should be much better because if you look at his physical stature and his talent espn's exclusive presentation of college basketball is presented by boost mobile boost makes it easy to switch switching makes it easy to save welcome back everyone thanks for saving the seat for me back with the hall of famer plateau carl ravitz let's take a look at the plan to play it's brought to you by northwestern mutual has to do with this point guard match-up which is terrific i'd say it plays defense it's all about that i'm going to defend you right now see i'm going to guard you baby i'm going to show higgins does it hang it's really watch him on defense he's incredible here he is right now he's gonna get over the screen there he gets over the top of the screen now watch this he comes back and he hustles and he crosses the turnover now we're gonna watch him again right here he's anticipating really well he's beating the guy into making that pass steps in the lane got a steal i'm going to watch him the third one and this guy can really pick pockets there he is right there steps to the lane steal he's got three steals or more in seven consecutive games he's done a brilliant job defensively i think the best on ball defender is trey jones who plays for duke but this guy's right there with him yeah he's getting up there weather spoon this is the three uh offensive rebound no it goes to kentucky as you said one shot every time down the floor for mississippi state it's a balanced kentucky team in terms of perimeter play inside play they have depth up every position on the floor it makes practice very competitive carl that's always big when you can have practice be extremely competitive wide open set play hero buries another one he's getting better and better man with every game you can see the bounce the swag he had it down here at auburn bruce burrell has done an amazing job to get the kind of adrenaline that they have down here now the unbelievable energy peters way off the mark and a slow start shooting-wise for mississippi state that wasn't a quality shot i think the bottom line is if you're going to be kentucky you better take some quality shots start at two of two they're one for the last eight why not kentucky's on fire laura early absolutely and coach cal telling his huddle that he liked the way they started this game that's been something that he's really emphasized as you guys mentioned wanted a faster start didn't like the two missed dunks but he liked those two shots that we just saw and another thing to watch for he said let's see how they're defending us when they switch we may need to do some things we noticed today at mississippi state shoot around they spent the majority of the time carl on how they would defend kentucky that's something that kentucky is going to watch out for here early dale laurie you talk about making shots when kentucky's making shots early in the season they weren't a good perimeter shooting team but now i think the kids are getting into the rhythm they get more familiar with the offense the various sets and they're really shooting the ball with poise i've always been a big fan of washington i just think he's so much better that his number's in detroit his body has changed he's lost some weight he's slimmed down there's a lot of folks when they come and scout kentucky they look at him as one of the potential nba players on this roster there's a couple of them but they certainly have cast their eyes on pj washington what they don't have kentucky as they've had in the past is that superstar big time anthony davis kind of player the type three of four guy in a draft mississippi state tries a different approach instead of the three instead they're gonna get a walk and another turnover that is their third turnover of the night want to remind everybody super tuesday rolls on up next here on espn zion williamson number two duke they're at the oakland zoo they'll take on pitt the blue devils have won five in the last six against the panthers duke and pitt next you can always watch it on the espn not from anywhere nick well mentor and pupil there yeah mr cable going against his mentor coach k and you got the best combination in america barrett and williams said there's no combo as good as those two guys the former player versus the coach that hasn't gone well as you take a look at the numbers with the exception of mike bray no one else has beaten the head coach mike bray's got pretty good numbers there he's got great good compared to everybody else he's crazy hall of famer unbelievable he's done a great job at building another struggle a little bit this year oh let's turn to the ball won't be you can't win making those kind of players you could win for those kind of plays 18-6 you know what's great about him he did start basically he really had to earn that starting job and the same thing happened last year with shay uh alexander he's now playing for sacramento they earned their starting but you practice coach k is going to play it coach k coach calipari is going to play it if you do your job in practice tyson carter into the game for mississippi state we're gonna get a foul and free throws coming up for reggie perry he's a good-looking young player played well in here last game their win against vanderbilt first time they've won down here the last five tries they got beat down there by vandy but they played well against vanderbilt van gaal was telling me he was very pleased and especially with his freshman perry and woodard played well off the bench that's that legacy bench a lot of the guys had dads who played in this program yeah those two guys pushed corner got three of them yeah makes a little easier recruiting he's become a pretty good force down low as the starters head to the bench for kentucky at least three of them do jamal baker now into the game johnson on the floor emmanuel quickly comes in as well he's joined by ej montgomery and nick richards see right now when they make a change like that you got to step your game up when you're mississippi state and take advantage maybe they're not going to have a rhythm right now like they had early because they had great rhythm up there in the first few minutes in this game their rhythm was terrific [Applause] richard's big size advantage on perry a couple of inches he goes with a jump hook and he gets it to go wow how many teams would like to have richards as a starter think about that the guys they bring off the bench they can start at about 80 percent of the schools in america what a start for kentucky shooting terrific up 20 to 7. peters gets that to go and he'll go to the free-throw line trying to complete the three-point play nice drive right there he had a great start against florida at 16 points in the first half was shut down a little bit in the second half but he's got ability he's got talent there's no question it's a veteran team that's going to win a lot of games it's the best team i've been holland's had since he's been here free throw misses offensive rebound over richards and how about that shot off the window by robert woodard the other thing too having an experienced team in this building unlike maybe some less experienced teams they're not going to be rattled by this start by kentucky but you would hope not because they got a veteran team as you said probably got a lot of quality players for the nit last year to share their dream as [Applause] [Music] ncaa montgomery no good and here comes mississippi state down nine take side of the backboard pictures made that happen quickly had his pocket picked there's a run out for carter who will lay it in he can shoot the three-quarters well yeah see i think right now you don't see the same timing the efficiency the rhythm you saw with the starters and they jumped on that and take a little advantage to get back to the game 100 right so guess what all three of those starters are now at the scorers table after a 6-0 run from mississippi state i thought they had to take advantage of it they did it power called on lamar peters we'll take a timeout good start for coach kelly gets his starters back in see if that changes the way things are going you're watching the sec on espn kentucky's tyler hero continues to be just that a hero for them and a lot of it was happening against auburn in a crazy environment where he said he almost just blocked out all the noise in the latter moments of that game when his team needed it most he was able to find the confidence necessary to make some very clutch shots you see him making some of those shots there i asked him if he had watched him back and he said well yeah because my little brother austin who's 14 years old will always snapchat or text me videos of my games and that's how i watch some of these shots back and i said well what did he say about those shots and he said uh he always gives me a hard time he's not impressed by much but when tyler saw himself making some of those shots in that environment against auburn carl and dick he said he'd realize that he can be a lot more for this team he feels like that has even added to his swagger of late i'll tell you one thing you get swagger too lord if you saw the way he played down there he was unbelievable as brother austin if he's a player then i can tell you this he's gonna wear a kentucky uniform he stepped to the line making those two free throws down the stretch and before he even got the ball he was smiling because he knew he was gonna make him it's such a routine for him and uh the more clutch he becomes the more big shots he takes the better off kentucky will be a double up on travis to the post he walked with the basketball he was effective against robert because let's face it albert played without their big guy a rim protector rebounded we're not saying superstar but when austin weiner wasn't announced in that lineup to start even coach cal acknowledged things changed he's a rim protector absolutely and what they did is they took advantage of that and travis had a real good run there in the second half [Applause] seven seven-point game mississippi state perhaps weathered the first storm we'll see if they can cut into this lead even further peters in an out offensive rebound had a chance too and it does not go in for robert woodard winner was right there for that should have had that down oh good triple threat position they get everybody in a place rears their body for the basket hero way short elton johnson got off to a fast start if you're just joining us three of four with a couple of dunks and another turnover for mississippi state that's their fifth our nba wednesday double dip we're in philadelphia the spurs and the sixers then salt lake city for the nuggets and the jazz our coverage starts with nba countdown at seven on espn and the espn app how about you and barkley the other day just destroying the nba we well we had a great time but you know shoot so many threes man it's becoming ridiculous watching it i mean really charles says it's unwatchable and if some charles says it i'm not gonna argue with him i asked him i said were you a mcdonald's all american he said no but i ate a lot of mcdonald's tell charles it can't be unwatchable it pays his salary and we get a lot of nba games it's not unwatchable well you know it's just that they're shooting the three so much carl it's unreal travis block from behind he'll go up again and lay that one in transfer from stanford to grad transfer very strong very physical well he's got that stanford degree i can't even spell stanford i mean you gotta have like 15 50 on the sats to get [Applause] [Music] you're in right look at this guy outstanding player in the top 12. good take by pj washington he really came back and came to kentucky because he has hopes of playing basketball professionally there's a million different directions he can go in but he wants to play basketball and he came here because he thought this would give him a great opportunity well i think they had a pretty good track record here developing players there's no question about it even though many of the kids come here are really skilled talented young guys carter got the turnover he helped out one of the officials jeffrey anderson we'd like to see the new orleans saints help out the officials on that call i know where you were going oh wow wow come on how could they do that how could so many guys miss that talk about interference when dari weathers were tough in traffic good health defense look at kelden johnson fight for it jump ball the arrow stays with mississippi state mississippi state needs a little spurt the confidence they can't allow calipari's kids to get a spurt now if they get a spurt they can go in at halftime really feeling great a little jump ball a little hustle off to the possession which i need hate no time are we starting monitor usage now let's not slide the monitor's car don't get me going i won't let you i won't let you get too derailed no i will not get the real tonight mississippi state by the way it's a really struggled on the road against an ap top 10 team you got to go back to 1995 when it was against the kentucky team ranked number four they got a win on the road yeah the coach is right here richard williams he's sitting to my left took him to the final four in 1996. john calipari was there too as a young coach with massachusetts travis that ball was deflected and blocked by eric holman waiting for eric holman to start scoring he's posting up now and heads out towards the three-point line and he can shoot the three he shoots about 40 40 plus there he goes no good a couple years ago eric holman was playing right here won the high school state championship for owensboro owensboro is where rex chapman came from did play at the same high school rex was television but he won a state championship his junior year he had a horrible game over seven really struggled a lot of schools were backing out came back his senior year holmen and really was outstanding worked hard and now he's back home here you better believe he's feeling a little butterfly no doubt he's got about 45 uh friends and family here tonight tickets how do you get those tickets we have an ncaa investigation oh no don't go there but holman you know the rumor was that not only did he struggle in that game in high school you're talking about but he also was uh about 179 pounds they say that he was about 190 ben hellen told us he was about 179 and now he's put on significant weight he's going to be a first or second round pickler in the nba draft yeah that's right and you know ravi it's interesting because you would think coming home to kentucky maybe there would be something pulling at his heartstrings playing against the cats no because he was a louisville fan growing up he said the one thing he couldn't do was cheer for the cats everybody who's here for him tonight obviously wearing mississippi state gear he really wanted to go to louisville lauren and they backed away a little bit they went in a different direction in recruiting but he's the guy that's got to step up here and make some threes to open up that defense a little bit they can't let kentucky go on his run they're going up to 11 now the one thing about kentucky on the free throw line there he is right there he gets the role to go his way you ready for this think about this they've made 312 free throws coming into this game their opponents have only taken 264. they're a plus 7.5 free throws more than their opponents right here that's seven points at a bank to start with then you factor in another 10 here with the rough crowd so they're pretty good shape one thing they don't do dick i mean we're talking about a game coming up this weekend with auburn mississippi state they launched three you talk about the nba those guys shoot a ton of threes kentucky doesn't shoot a ton of threes no they don't they got some inside play they can go to they got drivers and slashes he got fired he did he got fouled no doubt about it i look at dan and i was talking to him about the ucla teams you think about having players what about guys like kevin love what about a guy by the name of travis weir norman powell and then there was a fear player well holliday was there as well a guy by the name of westbrook he said to me man he said i'm the only guy that's ever stopped russell westbrook i stopped him i defended him because i kept him on a bench and he played nine minutes a game as a freshman but he said never did he see any player he's ever had work harder like he did during the off season and even during the year he said russell never took off on any kind of drill they did for your young kids out there there's a reason he's an mvp there's a reason he's a triple double guy he made himself that kind of player there is no shortcut young people for success weatherspoon gets both interesting story out of vanderbilt darius garland has announced he's leaving the school and he's going to prepare for the drafts so wow drew continues to have some problems at vanderbilt we'll be there tomorrow night on espn2 they get tennessee and we'll have much more on that with jimmy dykes joining me for that game first of all but he's coming off an injury he's not leaving like scottie pepin's suggested with zion williamson the lead and what about loyalty what about thinking about your teammates your coaches and your people i mean i know the money's great and he's gonna make the money injuries can happen whether you're practicing or whether you're playing so i i just don't buy that argument that a kid like zion should leave school to protect himself from injury don't buy it at all i love his attitude because he said i would not let coach k down and i'm not going to let my teammates down by leaving that's class perry thought about a pass took a three and he gets it to go important three it brings him within seven that was a big three threes could change the complexion of the game this adventure basketball team they're not losing their poise when kentucky jumped up double digits especially early i mean nothing but man-to-man you're not gonna see any zones you're not going to see any traps you're going to see straight man-to-man defense [Applause] here a wide open three nothing but net by the way he squares his body really well all your young kids out there square that body to the basket and then he's got the swan at the end the follow through and the film will show hagans had a shot passed it up drew the defender kicked it to him and it was a wide open three there's a foul on the floor on hagins so they beat auburn they're beating mississippi state and what a game coming up this saturday tough three-game stretch for kentucky this is wild for auburn chris silva having his way for south carolina guys thank you silva's a great player and wiley's absence is hurting auburn we just saw that as dick said in their recent game against take a look at the sec big 12 challenge coming up and 10 different games dick you got west virginia tennessee of course kansas kentucky the media requests and the fans that will be here along with college game day that day one of the great environments especially with those two programs on the same floor all season to have that game in the sec big 12 challenge well two elite programs two outstanding hall of fame coaches lawson was great yesterday would not let them lose against iowa state but we're going to go down to see tennessee and i'm excited nice second effort right there tyson carter stepped in front of that hero pass joey wouldn't grow you know west virginia had that surprising win over kansas then last night at home i know bob huggins was very disappointed in their play against baylor but you never know and they're going down to play against tennessee and tennessee's got to get acclimated now everybody playing at an incredible level against them that's a commitment they're going to have to make now to match what they're going to face heck of a team veterans know how to play rick barnes has rejuvenated tennessee basketball you tell me you've done this forever so they've been a top three team basically the entire year but now they're number one is there a difference between one and three absolutely when you're one you become a target for everybody three certainly very good i mean i i had a pre-season three and people got all over me for today they're not that good hey i saw them and you saw in the sec tournament last year as they've been on the offensive boards really were impressed really impressed play together in a combination slow feel and williams on the wings of all-american mid-season stroke feels right there as well they're a great combo get back to the game man kelvin johnson throws one up and misses they certainly are back in the game now the lead is six and peters has the ball from mississippi state with 5 20 on the clock they just stayed within their system and they didn't panic didn't panic try to catch all 11 points want to be hired at once petersburg [Applause] [Music] [Applause] hero is three for three from three they get it to pj washington the reverse layup gets that to go the message from ben howland in the mississippi state huddle just before now was talking about how he wants him to be even more patient so he likes the fact that they haven't panicked but wants him to panic even less really singling out quindary weatherspoon as well it's like i need you on the defensive end i need you to do everything that we've worked on and we saw him working with quindary a lot earlier today and shoot around challenging him a lot saying that he would need him then he's reiterating it now thanks lauren to call that foul on lamar peters that's his second there's hugh as they call him quindary weatherspoon he's top five in scoring in the history of bulldog basketball look at those point totals unbelievable great numbers great body his brother nick is the more school defensive player two very different personalities too oftentimes you see that with brothers but nick is followed in the footsteps of quindary as hero goes back door and he'll get fouled nice pass from pj washington let's go to coach cal who's wired for us tonight you keep guarding keep rebounding and fly you know what you're supposed to do and how you're supposed to play if you choose not to that's on you okay can i walk in the game and want to play what is the team asking me to do i know i know what they're asking me to do he's always wired man this will be wired by us he's always worried are you kidding me it's unbelievable he was inside lauren and i will win it was taking 30 minutes to put on a pierce shoes he's unbelievable he's got new ones ovo's got the coaches versus cancer sneakers and suits this week they continue to raise money for cancer obviously something near and dear to your heart as well but that's why you see howland the coaching staffs for both teams we're into sneakers with the sets hope to raise 4 million dollars this year the v5 they shot my gala your efforts i put nothing past you nothing it's gonna be tough peters good move and he comes up way short on the shot he freed himself up i got it down to six but now it's up to 10. good spacey in kentucky i love their spacing 15 to 17 feet apart makes it difficult for you to get help pj montgomery emanuel quickly into the game montgomery will fire a three travis battles but instead it's mississippi state down 10 3 40 to go looks like held and johnson may have blocked that cleanly from behind instead free throws coming up when we come back nick weatherspoon will hit the free throw line good game with the sec on espn on a super tuesday [Music] to you i love it guys thanks for the shout out there adnan and coach and we do have coaches versus cancer awareness week and so that's where coaches wear sneakers for cancer awareness coach cal tonight decided to bring some extra swag to it these are the ovo air jordan 8 the calipari pack which is a collab between drake and the jordan brand and coach cal said look i think there's about 80 of these pairs in existence for a while he couldn't even get a pair now he has a couple pairs one of them signed by drake and coach cal in his office right now the other on his feet so he will be wearing these for the first half of this game and obviously brings great awareness to cancer and cancer research which is so very important dick vitale's you know so well also brings a little extra fire to the court as we can all agree well you know the bottom line there's nothing coaches versus chance to do a great job and i like to think we at the v foundation do a tremendous job we're really uh we got a beautiful car we're going to be raffling off a red mercedes convertible and i'm telling you for a hundred dollars carl you and lauren will look great in that car a beautiful red mercedes convertible a hundred dollars for a chance 1500 chances only got about 500 left on the second car we sold the first one out so just go to jimmyv dot org slash my towel raffle 2019. how do you like to roll up to a super tuesday breakfast in a red convertible you look good i'll tell you that wow four on the shot clock montgomery pinned in the corner and then he walks good defensive effort good defensive effort right there take a look right there there's the car look at that beautiful car and there's my cover in my new book my mount rushmore is a college basketball kentucky's all in that book anthony davis and carl anthony towns one of the four best one-and-done players along with durant and carmelo anthony you can get the book at dickbytetown online.com dick fight [Music] [Applause] he said transition defense we have to do a much better job we did not do a good job in our first two games and really struggling right now to steal kentucky's making him pay early in the game and right there's another example eric holman still scoreless for mississippi state a near steal for hagins and he is pestering witherspoon he takes great pride in playing defense battle great pride peters no good offensive rebound by perry and he lost it gonna be careful here 10-point game two minutes to go in the first half if you're mississippi state good pass washington yes there you go maybe in johnson he goes over the top excellent pass right there by washington great look here's the transition look at this the steal and they know what to do with the steel havens kicks it right out i love the way johnson runs the court he gets great angles and he's got that explosive move for the goal [Applause] creating angles so important offensively they work on that all the time you have a team that wants to be delivered mississippi state you got a team that wants to you heard coach calipari during the wired get it and go go go go fast he wants a run there's no question about it i'll run two by those kind of athletes let me tell you this you know it's amazing he is head think about this how many guys wish they can do this he's had a top ten pick 11 consecutive years unbelievable unbelievable i know that seth wishes had that down in virginia tech i wish i had that down at detroit i got a second round draft try since i was ecstatic ecstatic big body against big body there perry how about reed travis denied the access and a chance for a one-out and a turnover instead telegraph that pass telegraph mississippi state a little out of the comfort zone trying to push it so they'll settle it down with 90 seconds to go in the first half they got to win these 90 seconds but with a little mental momentum [Applause] harder good move but again he freed himself up for a layup we saw that earlier with a little jump shot and he missed him both gotta convert those get that opportunity got to convert it [Applause] kentucky's done a great job not allowing weatherspoon to go to the goal like he just did right there and that's what he does exceptionally well but they've done a great job containing that he's a big time scorer man top five and mississippi state 96 they had some team here that went for the final four eric davier company it was the year kentucky won the whole thing rick pagino's club b.j washington three no good travis is there fight for the rebound about a six-second differential now between first half and shot clock you want to come with a stop right here you don't want to go in double digits down it's just a psychological negative you've got to be able to right now lock it up defensively for mississippi state oh what a nice change of direction that ball was deflected defensively by perry and the last shot will be mississippi states hagen's game goes up a notch he works a little bit more in his shooting ability and he will he will there's no doubt about that right to travis no good rebound oh another layup missed you're gonna compose that car girl you would make that lauren would make that seth would make that we know williams would make it edmond i don't know if edmond mentioned and i know i wouldn't make it frustrating first half for mississippi state they shoot 10 of 33 from the floor and they missed a handful of what appeared to be pretty easy shots 34-26 our score at the half number eight kentucky leading mississippi state let's go to laura coach you were asking for clarification right there from the officials what was that about i just wanted to know the kid got knocked to the floor i didn't know what happened i'm like how's that not a foul but that's fine you know we just we made some subs and the game went the wrong way then you can't be in and most of it is again you know what we're asking you to do you you're breaking it off and doing your own thing again today free throw blockouts you're going to lose the game because you're not going to block out on a free throw they've got three already if i'm them try to get fouled shoot files make one miss a second get another one crazy thanks coach way to lay out laura let him keep going professional reporter laura runley smart our score kentucky 34 mississippi state 26. the jeep half-time report with the great adnan burke seth greenberg and that other guy jay williams comes up following a short commercial break mobile as we take a look at tonight's player resume that's brought to you by indeed with a score 34-26 a bunch of those points have come from tyler hero his outside shooting game and has been spot on i'll tell one thing he's a terrific player he knows how to get free he squares his body i love the way for the youngster squares his shoulders to the basket gets a great look and he's really getting better and better with each performance back with a hall of famer dick mitel karl ravis laura rutledge will rejoin us in just a couple of minutes it's 34-26 they shot 30 from the field this could be even closer and then one for eight shooting free so if you've been to holland your kids are right there they got to come out strong for the first five minutes here after halftime now against auburn on saturday kentucky blew away walmart they jumped out for a 17-point lead and what got over here back was bryce brown was on fire i mean he was unreal and then they had sir man the round now a rebound my guy barkley cheering like he couldn't believe he was cheering and cheering and cheering [Music] laura revi i spoke to ben howland and he said the main message is that we just got too sped up offensively he wants him to be patient offensively he said get it even more side to side instead of just front and back he also said the main thing with them is that they've got to avoid the turnovers let's see if they can keep that calm down early on he said it's very key early in the second half to not turn the basketball over but two areas were balanced turnovers were equal and also the rebound and turtles were equal so they played them there they got to shoot the ball better the bottom line is you can't win if you're not making shots you can talk about every other phase of the game you've got to make shots mr rabbit nine turnovers each team 10 of 33 13 of 31 for kentucky in the first half and eric coleman was really a no-show offensively number 35 the kid from owensboro kentucky who won that state championship on this floor back in 2015. been red hot from three-point land especially in sec play and he was old for one in the first half yeah he's not getting open for shots you got to be able to get free you got to move without the ball and you people got to find it you got to want the ball you got to be active so many players are too stationary man they don't move without the ball canary weatherspoon the leading scorer had eight in the first half for mississippi state he's got to use that driving ability he has an attack off the bounce peters way downtown way off he shot that are you kidding me from louisville he shot that from lilyville how important in the first four minutes here very important i always think of the basketball game especially you're on the road here you've been howling you're down eight you're playing a team that's so efficient here you mentioned the top of the show 168. that's unbelievable that's not against cupcake city man it's the fcc and the fcc has now really got some outstanding basketball record at rough 160 and eight incredible double team on pj washington heroes open but instead reed drives won't get it to go offensive rebound dj washington good job by washington playing in the glass given that second effort a big concern about how it was the glass how do you get holmen involved here well you got to get some screens for him and he's got to move without the ball he's these two stick two guys together easy to play gotta have better spacing when gary went in amongst the trees and that shot was blocked you know he mentioned cancer holland's daughter by the way works at ucla pediatric oncologist nurse does a great job his son is a lawyer down the santa clara area he's very proud his kids have done exceptionally wrong weather spoon proud thought he got away with an offensive foul that's what he's got to get he's got to attack that's his game his game is to attack go to the rim use that body of his the strength good speed [Applause] reed will get a foul and it's going to be called against eric holman who picks up his third foul now take a look right here on his offensive foul right there they blew that baby they blew that baby you know but they're entitled to one you can't blow them like they did in that game with the saints though i don't blame those goats i mean i kept hearing about you and the patriots and brady they got a couple of uh good calls in that game to the patriots say anything you want g-o-a-t symbol case closed nobody nobody close to mr brady our women's thursday night showcase number one notre dame number one notre dame how's that sound [Music] sounds pretty good thursday at 7 eastern time on espn of the app so you can watch it anywhere wake up the echoes three misses perry clears and how about the tennessee women who've lost five in a row for the first time since 1970. couldn't believe that when i saw that but perry did a nice rebound right there mississippi state's just been hanging around but they have trailed since basically the three-minute mark of the first half that's a tough shot and it's way off was not a good shot though teams that win take good shots you got to understand the definition of a good shot with the realm of your offense and if you take good shots you got a chance to win if you don't you're going to the loser's locker [Applause] 37-28 super tuesday duke and pitt to follow our game here coach gale mr cable going head-to-head made love of fear right there those two guys we no love tonight though when he hooked up on that floor both competitors hero had it kicked from behind so another turnover and a two on one one with a screw to the other great play just good unselfish a lot of guys would have tried to make that shot very unselfish big blue nation trying to rally their team the lead down to seven people they should be kind of quiet here tonight when dary weatherspoon may have taken an elbow to the face so we're gonna get a timeout [Applause] tell you kelton johnson really impressive that ability you know he reminds me of it i'm not saying he's him now i don't want people to say oh you're saying he reminds me of a young version i want to hear mr williams comment on this and seth he reminds me a young version at times when i watch him like i'm seeing greg hill like i'm watching grand hill now brad hill was obviously a hall of fame player but i mean that glide the slide the way he plays you take a look at this it looked like an inadvertent finger to the face of when dairy witherspoon they're going to take a look at it and you can see his left eye appear to have been where that finger poked but i think the replay will show is completely inadvertent [Music] so how about the coaches picking and ben howland was telling us this earlier you know sec media day he comes out and says i think tennessee's the best team in the conference and yet kentucky once again pre-season by the coaches pick to finish first in the conference well you know conjunction with the reputation with all those crazy fruits automatically people you know have them way up matt williams sec player of the year schofield back for like his seventh year bowdoin and bone playing terrific who was the better team coming into this season weren't they i would think so with their experience and they're proven right now they have one loss they've won 12 games in a row i voted for number one in my ap poll that i vote on because when they looked at tennessee you think of it they won 12 in a row their only loss was the kansas when kansas was captured yeah kansas right now is not cancer i know they won a tough game last night watson didn't let lose over iowa state but they're not kansas without azamuke he's a whole different presence you don't replace seven footers you can protect the rib give your point to the low post easily you just don't replace them tennessee's never started 17 and one and the last time they were number one was 08 in the first game after being number one they lost to vanderbilt they get them tomorrow night on espn too i like perry i think barry's gonna be a very good player that diaper damage they can't get it under seven they can't come with enough stops there's one there's one right there now you're going to take advantage [Applause] guys quindary weatherspoon still on the bench for mississippi state after being poked in that left eye he was blinking a lot the eye very red ben howland asked him if he was okay said i'm good but he still can't see clearly out of that eye still obviously bothered by us we'll keep an eye on that yes we will thanks laura well that was the thing that happened to zion william seen in that florida state game but he had to go out with that eye to knock the wouldn't clear him to step on the court oh peters threw it right off the fingers of perry still 10 on the shot clock and every player will say i'm okay i'm okay contested shot air ball where they had a chance to get it down to five or even four and instead pj washington throws it down on the other end what a nice play by hagens some ball bounce pass and the crowd likes it here comes the big blue nation here comes the big blue nation here comes the passion of fast the most passionate fans in all of college basketball romarina what a special place 13 for pj washington take us to drake give us that dick by towel yell oh here we go baby here we go carl the little bounce bass up up and away dj with a little jam slam jam man mr ravage the guru baby are you ready for the sec big 12 challenge for 20 teams 10 games one day because you don't argue which conference is best you settle it on the court oh my god you figure big advantage for right here at kentucky kentucky host kansas did another one of our sonic blockbuster matchups third meeting in the last four challenges kansas has won the previous two dedrick lawson's been outstanding for kansas and you mentioned they changed with azabuki out but boy they look good last night too in that win that was a close game until very late well wants to take that game over corn play's been very inconsistent by game day that'll be placed carl this place will be rocking like crazy with game to use davis what a job he does is the quarterback peters high archer doesn't go in oh steal nice little steal good anticipation busy huddle for coach cal just now guys he had emphasized at halftime they could not give up any more offensive rebounds they gave up nine in the first half already given up two that's a point of emphasis also talking about how mississippi state is icing ball screens kentucky's spacing needs to be better and they run something where they try to get the ball to pj washington in the high post but they ran it and washington wasn't open so coach kyle said look we can't run that anymore if you can't get open pj said don't worry i will get open so look for that here soon just saw a little bit of that right there 41-34 foul on perry he picks up his second the one thing mississippi state doesn't go away they don't allow kentucky to go on a big spurt against him that's that experience that's another quick one on perry so he's just picked up two quick fouls and now he's got three quendari weatherspoon back into the game after being hit in the eye and quickly 16 fouls on mississippi state well ben allen said the one thing we got to do in preparing for the game is we cannot foul we don't want to put kentucky on the line they shoot 75 percent as a team they go to the line way more than the people that they play you start an attacking kind of team another jump shooting team as you said earlier they're an attacking team off the bounce in the post [Applause] frustration for calipari not with the offensive foul he's looking at ashton hagins and now he's talking with him call that on pj washington 14 turnovers for kentucky and they're not getting to the line tonight they average 18 free throws they've had seven tonight and that's really really smart on their behalf play defense without fouling carter misses the three about quindary hustling to pick up the offensive rebound spin move layup and a foul that's a big time play right there hustle play 50 50 balls you go get the 50 50 ball give her an extra possession he got a chance to win he made a terrific play there carl and then spun in a lane and laid it on the glass terrific play that's winning plays that's how you win basketball games a senior out of canton mississippi [Applause] who is one of the top five all-time scorers and calipari sending a message here johnson out of the game travis out of the game pj washington with his third foul out of the game usually it's the other way what kentucky does because they go to the line so often they get everybody in foul trouble for the other class now it's been a little reverse here four-point game nick richards double team keeps it and he finds hagins who misses nick richards keeps working and working no foul he got fouled there richard said he'd call it to blow the whistle pagans has it blocked and a three on two when mary witherspoon it's a two-point ball game another q going to the goal no quit in the kids from the start phil there's joy in jubilation on their sideline that coaches look at ben howland he's all fired up [Music] he loves that defensive effort nothing coming easy for kentucky on their home floor it's the physical presence right there that's the blocked shot in that sequence now watch this play right here wow a little euro step man a little euros though jay williams you have that play can you make that drive come on jay i know seth can't make that drive but you can [Music] evie give me some love he can handle he went to philly nixon university that's the division one team by the way brother from new jersey tinet new jersey great college player still has the moves back here we got a two-point ball game hero and hagans on the floor along with nick richard gj montgomery and emmanuel quickly for kentucky see they're not going to guard hagans up on top they they're going to make him try to shoot the perimeter shot he's one for four right now in this game but he's a driver quickly no good great position for montgomery inside can't get it to go we're gonna keep it here as carter finding richards out of the way and he picks up the foul on the floor well what he's trying to do is block out something we don't see a whole lot up kid gets federalized for trying to block out you know you mentioned earlier just there those guys that have to uh talk in there during the break about auburn getting beat right now by south carolina what that reminds me of that reminds me of florida state after losing that heartbreak of the duke they immediately get beat by pittsburgh i think sometimes when you lose a tough game like warburn did to kentucky it affects you in that next year yeah and this is hardly a reason or even an excuse but for kentucky they just took care of auburn in that brutal game now they get a ranked mississippi state team here and i would assume they're not looking ahead but they know kansas is coming in this weekend well it's the first time since calipari has been coaching here that they play three ranked teams in seven days well they passed the first test i talked about that being a calculus test now they got the little biology test and then you get the physiology test and somebody sent me on twitter said come on dickie me you take physiology before you take biology i don't care about that i just was having fun look at quindary witherspoon step through and montgomery denies him at the rim tremendous defensive play by montgomery richards wide open for the flush what a pass from hiro and you know what he deserved the score right there he deserved the score that's unbelievable he ran the court well great look that'll give you a little momentum right there they're going to come up with an answer right here he takes some time off the clock kentucky's got a little bit of bounce in the defensive left right here look at all the guys moving peters has richards on him and he's going to pick up the foul [Music] clutch hero right now watch his look punches look head up at all times what a great look unbelievable what a great look the way that coach calipari is coaching this game a play like montgomery the hustle by richards that will keep you on the floor tonight absolutely he plays guys that are going to produce you produce and show them that your positive minutes you're going to get pt you're going to get player job i want to hear about guys say get me beat in well you work and you play i'll get your p2 weather square down no doubt oh wow anybody can see that one [Applause] don't you always then say even a guy with one eye isn't that what the next line is yeah i usually do you've listened to me a few times 40 years i guess wow [Applause] this kid wants the ball man he wants the ball he's got that swag about him penetrates he had six assists in the first half and he gets that little jumper to go in the lane and that's what he does well drive attack off the bounce head down unbelievable masterpiece against tom greenstein in georgia was brilliant 23 points back home in georgia don't want to pick up that dribble see if holmen can go one-on-one here [Applause] shot long rebound kentucky hero gives you a little rebounder from the guard slot too this guy wants to attack off the bounce [Applause] witherspoon got him on the arm and hiro loving this and raising the roof here in front of big blue nation he'll go to the free throw line the lead is five on super tuesday and this is the sec on espn how to go next way to go [Music] he so badly wants nick richards to be a great player and he's kind of telling all of his players dude when the shots open take it huh kids love playing for him man they really do he's got so much energy enthusiasm has an excitement about him on that sideline he's a star and that's what ucla needs now they got to get a star down there ben holidays with three final fours and that's not good enough because the legacy of john wooden tonight 11 eastern time conversation with coach k tom rinaldi there doing the reporting he sat down and had a chat with coach k about expectations tiger woods of the start of his season back in a place he's won a handful of times in fact way more than a handful torrey pines and reaction from the inductees to baseball's hall of fame congratulations to all four of them and how about marianna rivera becoming the first unanimous selection for major league baseball's hall of fame unbelievable you know i mentioned thomas he does a great job we got some great reporters he's got one right here with us laura does a great job you think about maria taylor you think about certainly alice williams who i works with and what about holly roll i mean we got some great reporters at espn and holly's such an inspiration we're gonna be honoring that my gala gallop [Applause] wow quickly picks up a foul and right away cal turns around goes to the bench kelvin johnson's going to come in and quickly quickly he's coming out now you got to convert equator is a good shooter in terms of shooting threes his dad was a good player they got those players you talked about earlier woodard and perry and carter alder and papa's play they obviously loved the school but the kids wouldn't be going 89 from the free-throw line and he'll get three of them and he'll miss the first and you chase the kid you jinxed again unbelievable he's got to convert him that's starting to see right now you don't want to give kentucky to big momentum he got it back up to eight it was down to two was it not it was two pretty sure what i said had nothing to do with him missing the free throw though you're right you're right i don't think he heard you you know baseball b dallas kykel is a no-hitter in the fourth somehow that's a jinx when he gives up a hit in the sixth three jinxed it dallas didn't know what anyone said and i know carter wasn't aware of what you and i were saying absolutely he makes two of three and it's a six-point ball game nice rotation right there by life in the sec man you better come to play all the time i mean tennessee had to scare with alabama petty went off for like 30 in that game navy doing a great job down here with the people down in tuscaloosa but six sec teams in the top 25 lsu comes in at 25. six in the top 25. good move there ej montgomery playing a good game tonight okay well you can come off the bench with size inside with the ability of montgomery and richards that tells you what a quality team you have i mean those two guys can start at many many schools [Applause] the defense by hero okay those two big guys have given john some quality minutes he's got some staff working that sideline tony barbie kenny payne young guy justice very good his dad was a tremendous s.i.d at wink farm good game on the sec network right now and south carolina and auburn all tied up tigers have come back to tie that game up how about johnson with a ball fake and a dish nero pulls up way long with that shot they got to make sure you get the ball to the right people we got to get cue some shots put the ball in his hands [Applause] peter's been quiet he can score maybe hagin is responsible for some of that that ball off the foot of the kentucky defender so it'll stay mississippi state ball saturday 6 p.m eastern time the sonic blockbuster right here at rupp arena kentucky hosts kansas part of that sixth annual sec big 12 challenge is presented by continental kansas looks to win their fourth straight game against kentucky saturday espn in the esp in half quindary trapped by four guys and a walk your first thoughts on that game kentucky kansas well you know kentucky kansas you're thinking about playing here at romp you got kansas right now a little bit of a struggle playing without azabu i got to give the edge to kentucky i got to give the edge to kentucky depends with the only kansas right now they're guards blinds and nuts have got to be consistent that's really the difference in that team from last year in this year young kids played on a perimeter and dick when you talk about what they'll see nick richards trying to make something happen there when you talk about what kentucky will see against kansas they're not taking anything away from kansas we're taking anything away from this tough mississippi state team tonight but they did say that atmosphere at auburn really prepared them for this tough stretch that they're in the middle of they feel like if they could get past their escape with a win they'd be in a much better situation having to grow up quickly as usual for coach cal's teams hey laura they got an a-plus for leaving here with that win because they were ready to be put away i mean that blow was in yeah that ball was in that last shot unbelievable [Music] you go to the shoot around for kentucky and all coach calipari will say shoot the ball straight all you got to do is try to shoot the ball straight don't worry about anything else how it comes off your hand straight hey you know let me tell you this when you've seen the job he did at massachusetts to come up empty on the freeway line there was no doubt he was going to be successful here with the resources with the fan support the budget they have this doesn't shock you doesn't shock me at all the guy proved that a mess what an outstanding coach who three from the corner no good and hero easy rebound pushes to hagins richards camped out down low vacates the spot hagen's alley-oop no they had a place set up and he threw it over the head of ej montgomery so yesterday on twitter john calipari is very social on twitter my friend john taney turned 87 today and everyone still remembers when i tried to choke him or wait did he choke me i can't remember lots of laughs true hall of fame basketball coach even better at developing young men i miss our battles happy birthday coach john chaney they did have some dollars man that was part of some of them and they really went at it mississippi state good three-point shooting team but tonight they have been off they've got one one three-point field goal tonight in 14 attempts well you got to quit illuminati also to kentucky playing that perimeter defense coming out extending now they struggled against the three because bryce brown did a great job getting three in that orbit frank martin went ahead with a job down in south carolina position that rutledge who was correcting that laura lol yes i mean look i think it could also be lots of laughs but i think it's supposed to be laugh out loud we'll we'll actually take this one to twitter and see what people think no that's not a good idea i like lots of laughs so do i oh what a great rebound what a great rebound what a great gives him rebound extra shot gives him that extra shot who's the first guy over there dickey b calipari quickly keeps shooting that's what he's imploring his player to do and quickly buries a three and a lead goes to 11. nice to get together quickly off the bench too he's a little bit starting a lot of plays great rotation great backspin look at calipari oh yeah john likes it he likes it ravi back to you thank you keep flipping the switch there and by the way you flip the switch we'll do the same here flipping the switch brought to you by boost mobile [Music] hero and washington 27 points between them and they have made nine of 19 from the field the three-point shooting from hero has been outstanding and he's still now playing within the framework of the game because he had all three of those in the first half absolutely one thing though they stepped it up defensively when mississippi state made that run to get it down to two they elevated their game on the defensive end and that's why they're sitting here with an 11 point lead this is crucial time right now for mississippi state they're going to make almost every possession count with a little weave up on top go to a ball screen abdullah do going one on one and that's about 500 pounds banging against each other and a turnover and now two guys from mississippi state caught in the back corner [Music] oh [Applause] trying to take away any three-point look after he made those three early in the game [Music] washington's three from the corner looked good what a stroke of the moe baby uncle on the side of big blue nation for james the largest lead of the night washington's got talent man he's got talent should not be 11 points a game now with his skills ability and strength but nary weatherspoon in and out rebound kentucky and a chance to start blowing this one open here with seven minutes to go [Applause] [Music] peters to the rack kick for three good shooter in the corner and that one drops from tyson carter excellent shooter he's gonna get more looks he can shoot that jump shot he again squares the body it's so important so many kids are off balance when they shoot pedestrian carter goes over 10 points he's got 11 they're 22 and two when he gets 10 or more you run on top of it mr ravage right on top of it washington jump hook are you kidding me are you serious and he averages 11 a game come on man pj come on pj i said 15 again she might be on 18 again i can see you and coach califare having a debate though because he's so insistent it's not about the number of points number of assists i read his quotes he does that because they want to keep people unhappy not them to think about points they don't think about points anthony davis guilt kid gilchrist they went 1-2 in the draft but they did score 20 again kelden johnson picks up his third our nba wednesday doubleheader starts in philadelphia spurs and sixers and then we go to salt lake city for the nuggets and jazz coverage begins with the nba countdown at seven on espn and the espn app one thing talk about shooting three last night what a clinic klay thompson put on he made his first 10 threes i mean they were unreal see all the teams want to do with the golden state warriors dude but they don't have those kind of shooters perhaps chloe thompson you kidding me draymond green they all shoot it holmen's a good three-point shooter he just missed his second three-point shot tonight but the foul on the floor here let's get it back to adman burke in our studio all right ravi thank you so much a live looking near auburn at south carolina one point game fellas over the sec network and it's looking like an upset's going to happen depending upon if south carolina can make some free throws come up with a big-time rebound how about south carolina they're going to be 5-1 in the sec i mean you talk about the development of chris silva aj lawson you're talking about a team that competes as hard as any frank martin hardest thing to do in coaching get your team back after a slow start he has flipped the switch and got these guys competing at a high level yeah auburn trying to avoid losing back-to-back games first time since late february one point game 2.6 left once again over on the scc network ravi over to you all right man keep us posted on that one how about seth with the flip the switch plug as well flip the switch auburn and mississippi state not in the sec big 12 challenge they play each other on saturday there's a chance both are coming in off losses that's a tough game with two ranked teams mississippi state's gonna have to flip the switch here yeah the clinic being put on by pj washington he showed the scouts a lot here tonight bourbon is shooting ability strength power taking a ball with a goal he's showing his versatility he's multiplied talented he's like you multi-talented he's got 21. he's way more talented than i am 21 for number 25. playing the baseball you do basketball come on you're multi-talented work with hall of famers all over the place see our boy mark toucher in the studio today with tim kirksen baseball not far away your tampa bay rave is going to be good this year they are going to be very good you take that to the bench [Applause] talk about coaching and the impact coaches or managers can have on teams in a division in which boone and cora were superstars how about your job kevin cash did baseball a month away here 62-50 kentucky by 12 with five to go well j one five minutes a lot of time on the clock and you've got to come up with some stops defensively kentucky's been scoring making things happen in each possession moving the ball sharing the ball something they did really well with sleepy state you know when that they had the last game they 19 assists on 46 he can create his own shot he gets that to go a little quiet in the second half but now up to 16 points in the game well you know to me heroes doug johnson they have star all over gators may have gotten away with a push-off a big three and they stay within striking distance down 11. peters looked up at the clock trying to have one go down for him higgins has played them so tough they need a stop with 4 10 to go they need lots of stops kentucky has a lot of weapons we don't know who's going to bury his corner the basket oh good defense right there perry blocked it tough pass you could see that was going to be a tough pass and who wasn't hagins who got his hand in the way hero all the way to the left they go turn over to points real quick four point turn around right there and the ability right there of heroes away he absolutely slipped looking like that getting a crown oh big blue nation i love this place i love the big blueness that doesn't get you excited these fans are unbelievable peter is blocked by washington here they go two on one quickly locked at the rim by holmen will get a foul these fans really get out there what a great environment this place is unbelievable you gotta love this girl you're gonna love it come on man this is great espn's exclusive presentation of college basketball is presented by boost mobile boost makes it easy to switch switching makes it easy to save rough arena on its feet after this particular basket from tyler hero he's talked about how his teammates have actually helped lead him to this boost in confidence as he's shown of late and specifically at auburn one of the big moments that was talked about was ashton hagens and kelden johnson hagan's challenging johnson to be better well hero is a part of that trio that challenges each other they're very close and tyler says look everyone made a big deal out of that that's what we do every day we're holding each other accountable in a way that's really making this team poised to go on the type of run that they want to go on he finds confidence in knowing that his teammates especially those two keldan and ashton will call him out if he's not playing the way that he should be got to be able to take criticism critiques knowing that the goal is not to knock you down but ultimately to lift you up right absolutely i think a lot of kids can't handle criticism criticism means a coach cares about you i had a player one time knocking my door and said coach you never yell at me you never scream at me am i worth anything i think come on certain guys can handle that you have to know your players you gotta know each kid everybody's got a different personality delivery loves being wired there i'm telling you he loves it he has eaten it up man he loves it he also likes his team a lot why would you like that team was there he even acknowledged last year's team got to the sweet 16 and they they had a lot of pock marks this team doesn't have or at least hasn't shown and they continue to get better up 15 here with 3 20 to go what a night for pj washington 21 points 9-15 shooting and they responded when they made that run out of mississippi state cut it to two momentum was their way and then he responded and it was their defense that made it happen we got some positive minutes from richards from montgomery he really did a great job i thought you know defense people don't realize how important it is people in basketball do you got to play defense man you got to defend and you got to make shots and that's the bottom line is they're not making any shots they don't have that good follow-through right now because kentucky's in their face see i'm going to go actually like this i'm going to hurt you i would go with the left washington picked up his fourth foul he also picked up another block and he and hiro are going to come out of the game did a great job both guys going to the sideline quality performances for the pt peers tonight prime time performers kentucky's going to improve to five and one stay within a game of tennessee who will be at vanderbilt tomorrow night [Applause] i didn't take rick barnes law to rejuvenate that program down there and i'll tell you he'll sustain it i'm not saying being number one all the time but they'll be battling they had a great society recently young guard south carolina and frank martin's team improves to five and one they ended up beating auburn 80 to 77 as ej montgomery knocks a three down frank martin boy you talk about flipping the switch as seth said earlier frank martin struggled at her to gate but they have played so well in sec competition silva had 32 that'll be a foul on the floor here on reggie perry so the sec big 12 challenge will kick off with a really good one how about iowa state and ole miss noon eastern time on espn you're talking about doing a job what about kermit davis and ole miss i mean he has done an incredible job and he did want a little tennessee state he had me once down here to speak at a luncheon and i went to practice and watched practice it was unreal he was terrific meticulous blake hinson torched mississippi state from the outside he's terrific kansas kentucky six eastern time on espn arkansas texas tech lubbock texas goes many members of this crew six eastern time espn2 terry one thing there's a kid in this state he's not playing here but he's probably the best player not only in the state some say one of the five best in the country john morant yeah he's unbelievable his quickness explosive averaging 24 a game 10 times a game you'll be able to see him all over the espn platforms on thursday night tune in for that some people say that he could be top five in the draft he's legit [Music] he's the real deal the real deal and this team is the real deal getting better and better kentucky as the season progresses higgins [Applause] they've really got that chemistry now they understand each other where guys should be on the floor they play together defensively well they've got an a plus leaving armor with that win they're going to get an a plus tonight but withstanding the run that mississippi state made and now can they close it off and go three for three in seven days what happened those two games obviously this one and then that one at home certainly gives him a real good chance skeleton johnson will get bumped but instead they go the other way hi dick you gave us your one and doners let's go over your diaper dandies oh these are young players that are making such an impact obviously zion williamson anybody can tell that that guy's special his buddy r.j barrett so it has been an impact mid-season diaper dandy just get langford he's had one bad game against purdue but he's really not the reason they've lost four in a row and i'll tell you this there's a kid antoine davis a lot of people don't know him his father's mike davis coach of the titans down at detroit he's averaging 27 a game he leads the nation of diabetes in scoring and kelden not don johnson but kelden johnson and of course for kentucky he's right up there he's like 15 again and he was great early in the season non-conference games he was super then he picked that up in the auburn game kentucky with a solid performance doing what they had to do and john calaveras got to feel pleased coming off now with the win over auburn and mississippi state these are not cupcake city these are real legitimate nationally rated teams [Applause] well given the way they played against auburn and granted uh you know they had a good bounce at the end to allow them to get a victory there this was a never really close even when it was two didn't feel like kentucky had lost control of it and then they get kansas coming up you think that uh that they can compete with tennessee for the conference title oh absolutely i compete but i like the tennessee team because of their unbelievable physicality their mental toughness and their ability to play together as a unit with experience they got winning experience but there's no way in the world you could predict that they would automatically beat kentucky i mean maybe a battle would be a battle but i like that tennessee team big time and i like conjunctions and i like kentucky the way they're getting better and better and better you know you take their losses there was three games right yeah the duke game they were absolutely humiliated and i really believe that affected them early psychologically but they lost a heartbreaker to see more and they lost their heartbreak in alabama on a road i mean they could easily have one loss right now now they're in the top 10. mississippi state dick hasn't been held under 60 all season long and this game looks like that's exactly what's going to happen kentucky's defense howland stresses it pearl stresses calipari barnes defense wins ball games defense wins championships but into the 70s in a game like this that's a big advantage for kentucky well ben's going to be really disappointed you know he had that run down to east chile you know this last year he got fired they won the package yeah championship and he got fired and he had like four nba players coming back for the following year plus he signed zach levine but had five players that were nba players steve wolford took the job and had a big year in that first year but steve also felt the pressure of the wooden legacy he goes three out of five years to the sweet 16. that doesn't make it at ucla glavin went steve lavender five out of seven years this guy went three consecutive years to the final four that doesn't make it that's why they need a marquee name they need a calipari name they're not getting john out of kentucky but they need a major name that can be as big as the hollywood stores there's not a lot of those out there no you're right you got to put a package together financially to attract someone they don't have charter planes come on what a great win for kentucky today coming back off the lamborghini and soon these fans too i'll tell you pal these fans are so in love with their team and i respect that so much sometimes to a fourth sometimes cool i love it you know 76 55 the final they hold them under 60 first time that's happened to mississippi state all year and the shooting percentage not good for mississippi state 19 of 61 for the game good defense pj washington outstanding with 21 hero goes for 18 and kentucky stays and improves to five and one with laura rutledge dick fights out i'm karl ravitch back to mr miami vice admiral in the studio ravi i
