2004 Mercedes Benz Unimog U500 SNOW DRIVE! Surprising My 11 Year Old Cousin on a Snow Day (POV)

that wheel spin wheel spin in the unimog yeah welcome back i'm tedward and i know you guys love m3 snow content but i thought why not take out the unimog today it's the perfect day for unimog i think this is more appropriate for the weather don't mind my parking job i'm actually kind of proud of this it's not terrible it could have been so much worse there's no reverse camera in this thing yes this is the same unimog that doug demiro reviewed i drove it over the summer if you want all the facts and figures on the car you can go watch those videos but today is a special one because not only is it a fun snowy day to take this beast out for a drive but my 11 year old cousin is not expecting me to show up to his house today they have a snow day today i know there's not a whole lot of snow on the ground i'm pretty surprised that they did that but i'm gonna go pick him up and surprise him with unimog and we're gonna go get some milkshakes or something but i just can't wait to see the look on his face when he sees this roll up to his house and i should mention this was buried under quite a bit of snow and nobody i mean nobody has any excuses not to remove the snow from the top of their vehicles if we can do it from the unimog if we can do it you can do it so let's hop in actually i shouldn't say hop in we need to climb in this is very very tall we gotta use the ladder and the handles very important honestly if you fell out of this you would probably be severely injured to start up the mog we've got a pretty standard mercedes-looking key we pop it in this ignition we've been driving it a bit but we still want to make sure that glow plugs are warmed up everything's good to go give that a second she fires right to life we're in neutral this has an eight-speed pre-selector gearbox it's very bizarre to drive it takes a little bit of energy and effort to kind of get your mind wrapped around driving this vehicle because this is your shifter it actually does have three pedals down here you do need to use that clutch on every single shift but rather than moving a stick shift you know in an h pattern or in a sequential pattern you use this little guy in a sequential pattern and you pre-select the gear before you ask for it with the clutch it's a little counter-intuitive it's very strange but you get used to it but the beauty of this vehicle is even though it's enormous there's so much visibility because you've got this massive windscreen and that means that you can see where that passenger side is that's what makes this easier to drive in my opinion than like a hummer h1 because hummer h1 it feels like you're so far away from that corner that you can't even see it uh let's see if we get anything out of these windshield wipers probably not ideal because these are large i don't think they've been replaced in a long time but they'll do the job so first we're going to clutch in we're going to hit our air parking brake this does have air brakes and then we go forward it's going to select second gear and we're going to roll off the clutch but actually let's turn on our headlights because it is inclement weather if you need your wipers you need your headlights remember that kids off we go let's go surprise clark with something really cool no throttle needed to get this thing rolling i am not the most dexterous with air brakes off we go we're gonna select third clutch in out and there we go a lot of you guys asked before can you skip gears and yes you can so we'll go to six there it is six gear from fourth all right this is where you got to be cautious we're going to let these folks go you guys do your thing i'm just here in my unimog nothing like a blind corner holy cow we're gonna go to fourth last time i was here i was looking at these speed bumps and i was concerned because i was in my 911. today not not so worried all right let's go see how an 11 year old reacts to a unimog probably similar to the way i react to a unimog what do you think so much [Laughter] it's huge right look at you you're as big as a tire stand next to that tire [Laughter] [Music] you like it is it the coolest thing ever [Laughter] yo i wasn't even expecting that i just look outside and i just see this thing pull up to my driveway best snow day ever yes go ahead climb up yeah you got a handle on the left right there isn't that crazy dude my brother and sister is so jealous yeah there's the back oh yeah you can see the broken horn yeah oh this is like the the the with the limos yeah the partition yeah imagine being like you order a limo in this thing i wonder what my neighbors are thinking right now probably that you're crazy yes probably all right let's start it up you got your seat belt on see i am a mildly responsible adult okay all right we've fired it up now we're going to want to put our head actually why don't you put the headlights on so go ahead and just twist this yep one two there you go all right then i want you to push this down as hard as you can that's the push push push it's pretty tough there it is that is the air brake that's the parking brake all right then let's get some windshield wipers going not the best in the world but they'll do and then i'm gonna trust you an 11 year old to direct me somewhere that isn't going to get us terribly stuck pushing forward for second gear no one's behind us we're gonna roll off this clutch and jump over this mound of snow so to shift this thing we're in second gear i'm gonna push it forward clutch there's third gear there's fourth what do you think this is insane this is not how i was planning this day let's do it i don't think i'm supposed to go any other direction air brakes yeah this one gets a lot of attention yeah what's your favorite car um like the new one the current ford gt yeah like the probably the 2019. yeah what do you like about it it's like the model and like the racing stripes down the middle it just looks so cool awesome it's like modern but like at the same time who do you like to watch on youtube i like watching your videos good answer is this not the coolest snow day truck of all time we've got a line of traffic behind us because i can't go very fast in this thing these are some beautiful roads there's another mercedes [Music] and there's a guy in a big truck who thinks he's in a big truck yep this thing is so bizarre to drive everything is just like really visceral and raw but at the same time kind of delicate and easy like the steering is so light even though i get a lot of feedback from like the unbalanced wheels it's not hard to steer it's not hard to drive i think the most complex thing about this truck is trying to use the brakes smoothly because they're air brakes and they just engage very aggressively let's get down to sixth gear nice and easy that's okay it's your 11 year old sense of direction trying to be clever with these breaks all right i'm getting better i'm getting better with them there we go are you glad you're not on a school bus right now you take the bus to school every day yeah so instead of you taking a bus to school i brought a school bus engine to you yeah that's basically what's happening we're a lot higher than the school bus i figured this would be more responsible for a snow video with you than going out drifting people will get mad at me if i take a kid drifting they'll say oh you're putting him in danger instead i don't think there's any way you could get hurt in this vehicle here why don't we turn around in here is perfect this is a good spot we get some photos over here too i think this guy wants to know what's up these guys are interested yeah go ahead man [Laughter] we've got all the friends out here today thank you oh no there's no problem you look at you look at you you're already worried about cops [Laughter] oh man i'm going to park it here and we'll get some photos probably i'm telling you dude everybody loves this thing yeah everybody all right we'll get some pictures let's see what we can do here look at you already doing selfies with it here let me get a few of you say unimog can you come over here i want you to stand right in front of this tire for me right there yeah yeah come a little closer right there yeah perfect oh so we have to go we have to be really careful because the thing is if we have to stop we can't we have so much weight and if we try to stop really quick it's going to be really hard because the roads are slippery all right i have chopped off my cousin at his house and now it's time to return the unimog but it's actually been snowing now and when you're in a vehicle this big in the snow you've got to really take turns and stops into consideration because even though we've got loads of tread there's no way we're going to get stuck going anywhere what you don't want to do is understeer something that's like 10 000 pounds that is catastrophic and could be very dangerous so we're just gonna take our sweet time on these snowy roads the best thing about taking out 11 year olds in a cool car is that they're just as excited about it as i am it's like you're really witnessing pure bliss and automotive love in its truest form when you can see it through the eyes of a kid and and cards like this this is where really makes the difference because you start to really genuinely feel like wow if i love cars as much as an 11 year old loves cars like this is definitely my passion i'm not brave enough to drive this thing genuinely quickly for a couple reasons number one brakes brakes freak me out a bit they work very well but they're air brakes and i'm not an expert in using air brakes it takes a very different kind of touch number two is just the steering these wheels are a little out of balance they can use some work not a big deal but you know anything over like 40 miles an hour you start to feel the steering wheel pulling at you a bit but i always just end up with traffic behind me because i'm like the slow driver let's see what happens in eighth gear this is actually like a really happy place for it but we'll put it in eighth i feel like i've just bogged it down a little bit it seems okay she's happy i gotta say though it's very weird being so much taller than a school bus look at this guy no headlights shouldn't he know he could be hit by a unimog give me a little more room dude oh my goodness i'm getting good with this thing i don't want to speak too soon but i feel like i can put this right on the edge of the road without falling off [Music] the people who love this thing are all the plow drivers out today they're going nuts for it when we pulled in that parking lot people just like they have to see it they have to ask about it because this is even the truck drivers this is outrageous that's that's how you know you're in something really wild when someone who's like in a real truck is looking at this going what the heck am i looking at the challenge of driving the unibog is twofold because number one it's a slow vehicle and when you drive slow vehicles you need to be thinking ahead so you don't get hit right number two it's a large vehicle which means that i can't stop it very quickly i can't maneuver it very quickly so you have a slow vehicle that you can't maneuver very quickly it means that not only do you have to be very cautious when you pull out into traffic it means that you've got to look down the road pretty far ahead if you were to make a quick turn like if suddenly i was going to make that right turn i need to start planning ahead i can't just i can't just last minute decide oh that's where we're going to go turn left okay this is stressful all right into the brakes planning ahead six five four not the most graceful but i did it there's a level of stress that comes along with driving this vehicle anyway and then reduce friction on the road and it just goes up more and more i mean frankly there's million dollar like super cars i've driven that i'm more comfortable in than this just because of the sheer size you know everything that's a car everything that's like a car and operates normally as a car they're all just like related to each other they're all just slight variations this just doesn't feel like a variation of anything it just feels like its own monster truck and for someone like me who's primarily used to driving sports cars or even just suvs this is so out of my wheelhouse in the most literal sense there are some cool controls on this and i'll do my best to describe them i could be wrong about how i describe them but for example on this stock if i move this down you'll see that light come on and that means that i'm going to have some engine braking assisting me when i get off the throttle it'll just coast for the most part under its own momentum if i don't have that on but if i lift there's more drag and that's brilliant because it means i don't have to use the brakes you don't want to have to use the brakes brakes are like last ditch effort like just just forget about it brakes are for stopping not slowing down oh boy sweet that's the beauty of the unimog you pretty much go anywhere in it is that wheel spin wheel spinning the unimog i don't know that there's any way to have more fun in like a slow vehicle this is my favorite slow vehicle of all time so
