hi this is george from the unimog center and uh we have a 1990 u1300l ambulance and i'm here with my assistant george who's uh helping me out it's kind of a chilly day today so anyway i'm going to do a little rundown of this like what it's like to drive it and how to start it um and do a few things for the customer it's going to be going out to texas so i thought i'd just do a little run on this uh this unimog again this one already has a happy owner all the cars are slowing down because everybody wants to check this truck out so again this is a 1990 so this has the high speed axles it's also got the om 366a turbocharged engine i've been driving this truck around um for a little while and it's a it's a real nice it's a nice truck so we're going to go inside and show you how to start it so this is a typical uh 1300l army spec um kind of cab and dash again we've got uh george here um so what we've got is got your oil pressure that's a little bit uh fogged right now because it is freezing cold outside uh and the truck was warm so the air there's a little bit air in there that's fogged up but it's not a big deal you got your air pressure there are two gauges here um for it has two tanks these run between 12 and 18 bar one bar is 14 pounds you can do the math uh this is the attack this vehicle is normally driven at full rpms that's kind of the way it was designed so the om 366as either attack out at 2400 or 2600 depending on the specs the army cranked this one up a little bit to 2 800 rpms which is okay this is a tachograph speedometer as you can see this vehicle has pretty low mileage on it 60 000 kilometers you've got over here uh two wheel drive so that's rear wheel drive shift into four wheel drive you can do that while you're driving on the fly there's no need to go out and lock any hubs or do any of that stuff and then this is four-wheel drive with the differentials locked so you so we don't have the ignition on but this is a warning sign for four-wheel drive that's the warning sign for the diff locks this particular vehicle also has sirens which we're not going to use because we're not allowed to i'm going to take it out of diff lock and then with levers different unimogs have different levers but this is your eight-speed gearbox so basically um one through eight right there this is forward and reverse this is the park brake which is pulled back gently and then it gets sprung you can hear it it's an air park brake that engages it and this is the master power switch um well also i'll just go back this is the stop engine to push this down it also adjusts the idle so you can raise the idle on this vehicle it kind of acts as a hand throttle so when the engine is cold you know today it was freezing cold i didn't actually have to use it but if it was well below freezing you might want to turn the idle up a bit to let the engine warm up [Music] this is called a start pilot this uses an ether injector that's on top of the engine so it's a little pump so you can pump ether on these 24 volt vehicles i've never actually really needed to do that but it's an option and then here's the power so right now the power is off the master power this is a disconnect to the battery so i'll turn that on so now we have power when you start this vehicle you want to start it in neutral another thing to take into account is it's easy to be in reverse with this truck and then you put it into first gear you think you're going to go forward but all of a sudden you're going in reverse so as a matter of habit i always make sure that before i get out of the vehicle it's in forward um starting the vehicle is just like kind of starting any other car i put my foot on the clutch and just crank it over there you go it starts um you can see the exhaust is right out there this this truck is not smoking at all all right this is a really clean running truck so now we've got a park brake is on warning light for four-wheel drive like i said there's now we have all four wheels and the diffs are locked we're not gonna drive like that on the road these are warning lights for the uh brakes uh brake pad wear this warning light is if you're below 10 bar because this is an air over hydraulic it's a hydraulic brake system but it does use air this is a warning that you um are loot you're low on air pressure you know this is just a battery thing now one thing that people don't understand is this vehicle does not need any electricity to run so if i take the ignition key here and turn it off lo and behold the only thing that happened is that that light came on because there's not a circuit anymore um but the engine didn't stop right so this does not turn off the engine so in order to turn off the engine you do two one of two things on a unimog you either take the pedal and put your foot behind it and raise it which on this one you have to do it combined sometimes you just this is your only option or there's a uh where this where my left heel is there's a jake brake that shuts the engine down or you shut the engine down by lifting the pedal or in the case of the army vehicles this is a fuel shut off so when i push this down hard the engine stops and that hissing sound is the air dryer um just cleaning itself out uh so anyway that kind of gives you an idea of how you would start and stop this so again to start it is just like starting a normal car i'm messing around with the uh shift lever that's why it's making that noise so you'd start this just like a normal car in neutral with i put my foot on the clutch just fired up and there you go to stop it you come over here take this knob and you push it down you kind of got to push it down hard now if it doesn't stop that's when you just help it a little bit by by pulling back on the pedal on the accelerator pedal sorry how that's starting and stopping for ford in reverse then what you want to do is you just want to um you know put it into first gear that's going to be obviously your slowest gear let me just start it back up again so we're going to start it so you can see the light right there tells you what gate you're in so right now i'm in either if i go forward i'm in third or fourth i'll move it over to first and second but what i can't do is if i engage it into first so we've engaged in the first i can't get to fifth gear it won't let me there's a shift interlock on these so first i have to use third or fourth which i've just done now it allows me to go to fifth and if you heard that air um sound that sound this gearbox is actually shifting itself from it went from high to low and now it'll go from low to high so when you shift from fourth gear into fifth gear you're actually doing two shifts you're shifting from fourth gear back to first gear so you're going from fourth gear low to first gear high there's no overlap though in these gears they're all synchronized it's synchromeshed and fourth is higher than fifth so on a normal vehicle that has a high and low normally third overlaps with fifth and fourth overlaps with sixth so if you get into like a land rover or a land cruiser um you know low one and low two are lower than high one and high two but low three is very similar to high one that's not the case on this vehicle there's no overlap with these gears so anyway what i'm going to do is i'm going to uh to drive this vehicle and kind of demonstrate how one would drive it and give you an idea of what it's like on the road okay so basically what we'll do is we'll kind of go from a standstill to highway speed that has our miles per hour there hopefully it stays up uh the speedometer works pretty well so i will start in fifth and excuse all the handshake but so here we go get out onto the road see this truck shifts nice it shifts smooth i can shift fast [Music] so here we are cruising along we're at 42 miles an hour 45 miles an hour about 48 50. [Music] and we're at 53 54 55 57 57.4 that's kind of where this one was happy see on the gps there it's a little bit of a shimmy these tires have some uh it's been parked for a while so they have some cold spots uh the warning light that little red lights just telling me that i'm going faster than uh 80 kilometers an hour but again it's running nice it's running smooth uh this road has a lot of surface irregularities on it but uh yeah we're just trucking along at basically 57 miles an hour here we are kind of burbling along on uh back roads and i'm just kind of going 30 miles an hour i got plenty of surplus power to accelerate and de-accelerate so you know secondary roads like this are you know a cake walk again this is a pretty rough road um and we've already had some frost heaves so it gives you a good idea but again you know i've just got one hand on the wheel it's all i need even when it's really rough and bouncy like this uh truck rides pretty smooth actually i mean this rides is nicer nicer than our cars um what do you think george yeah and we can both talk in here without having to yell right [Music] [Applause] there she goes
