This was an iconic race. The last "original" Labor Day weekend Southern 500, and the last of the "old" points system, last one with Winston as title sponsor. Very fitting to see the Iceman prevail in this race one last time. I remember watching this race, and didn't know the scale of the changes that would happen in the years to come.

I remember watching this live and being heartbroken when Newman stalled on pit road under green because he hit the kill switch. I’m glad Terry won though.
