[Music] [Music] [Music] it's a beautiful day for football albeit a bit brisk here at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham North Carolina where today Citgo presents at left quick Coast Conference football the North Carolina Tar Heels take on the Duke Blue Devils and this is what they fight for today the victreebel for the last 12 years the victreebel has resided in Chapel Hill Duke fans feel that this is their best chance to put a home in Durham this afternoon good afternoon everybody I'm Steve Martin this is our last telecast of ACC football this season we thought we'd share with you our impressions of this 50th anniversary of ACC football mine starts with a statement from Florida State coach Bobby Bowden who said this week that winning the ACC title which his team is on the edge of doing would mean more now than it did 10 years ago evidence that the standard the Seminoles set when coming into this conference is now being met further evidence on November 9th three ACC teams this season said that they had a shot at a BCS bowl berth Florida State Maryland and NC State on this day two of them will meet in College Park Maryland and on this date it would be Nick Novak who would decide the issue with a late-game field Marylyn to a 24 to 21 win that win at that time would be Maryland's seventh straight establishing them as the hottest team in the conference and begging the question what would happen of Maryland and Florida State were to meet today that's certainly a question you wouldn't ask 10 years ago let's bring in another colleague of mine to tell you his impressions of this 50th anniversary of ACC football doc Walker thank you Steve my impressions my memories on this 50th anniversary of ACC football are all good but I have to tell you a couple things really stick out first of all Charlie Whitehurst the redshirt freshman comes out of nowhere to put the Tigers back on the passing map this kid shows great poise the 6-foot to redshirt freshman Rick did the things that I like the intangible is he has mobility of course accuracy completing 58 percent of his passes and here's you'll see hips up with JJ McKelvey for his third touchdown the man just had it going on I like his stuff and we didn't get a chance to show you that guy runs like a linebacker a quarterback I really think he was a shot in the arm speaking of shot in the arm pop off the return successful back surgery for EJ Henderson last year's ACC Player of the Year was spectacular all over the field once again average to the 11 top of the game for the Terrapins and then this Rockne Thomas for Clemson this kid was all over Don lemons group along with John Lee the best one-two combination in the ACC but when it comes down to the sledgehammer its Dantonio Burnett viccellio mr. impact itself number 45 was it running back from worst nightmare no reason why you can see that Chuck Amato is group number one in total defense in the ACC too many memories not enough time but one guy who will hit it right on the mark is mr. ACC himself let's throw it over to Mike hug wood thanks a lot doc you know when I look back at this season I look back at a team that was an underdog a team that really exceeded expectations I'm talking about the University of Virginia a team that was picked at the beginning of the year to finish eighth in the league and we first saw the magic of virginia on jefferson pilot sports in early october game against Duke it was Virginia a team that was making miraculous second-half comebacks this flea-flicker past Matt shop completion was a big play in the win over Duke they would come back the next week down three touchdowns against North Carolina to come away with a victory they have a big surprise against NC State with a big defensive play to come away with the win Virginia with a chance to finish third in the league now you talk about young players making an impact how about T angler Clinton we saw a huge game from him against the Clemson Tigers NC State battling for second place and young ta McClendon from Albemarle is one of the big reasons why there have been a lot of great moments in this the 50th anniversary of the Atlantic Coast Conference right now my colleague Durant his first series under fire not as successful as he hoped but it's a long afternoon they say it's a marathon not a sprint no question Adam Smith comes out first series was rather inauspicious
