it's beautiful night for baseball in San Diego and as we continue with the e-trade pregame show let's send it upstairs to the public address voice of the Padres mister Bruce Binkowski ladies and gentlemen please rise and remove your caps our color is presented by the fleet Logistics Support Squadron of 57 na s north eyelid interpreting our anthem tonight in Belinda Blakely Bowen now ladies and gentlemen to honor America with the singing of our national anthem please welcome one of the stars from Fox's Ally McBeal Lisa Nicole Carson oh say can you see her lead nah what so proudly we hail at the twilight's last gleaming whose broad stripes and straight that still there spangled bad Oh Lisa Nicole Carson the star of Ally McBeal with our national anthem and our very special guest with tonight's first pitch and friends I think you'll remember who this man was in a very special season in 1998 you are the single-season homerun so mark mcgwire Big Mac is going to throw out the first pitch in tonight's ballgame and folks everywhere around baseball know a big debt of gratitude to Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa for the spectacular feats they performed on a daily basis it seemed throughout this 1998 season and listen to the roar from mighty Mark McGwire a big roar for money mighty mark mcgwire as he throws out tonight's ceremonial first pitch the crowd roaring in San Diego the Yankees have a three nothing lead the Padres try to stay alive and when we come back Joe Buck Tim McCarver and Bob Brenly will have the call of tonight's game for the World Series after this timeout welcome back to San Diego and welcome to game number four of the 1998 World Series with the Yankees up three games to none this crowd at Qualcomm Stadium trying to root on the Padres to help this series breed on for Game five tomorrow night welcome to the broadcast moves everyone I'm Joe block along with my partners Tim McCarver and Bob Brenly well you know the story the Yankees are up three games to none trying to close it out a clean and quick four-game sweep in Tim McCarver this postseason just about like any other postseason where the spotlight usually unearths some unlikely hero and that's happened here in 1998 David Cohen was asked before the series started who he thought would be the MVP he said Scott Brosius because he's got that certain glint in his eye well he's got thunder in his bat too and he has been the unlikely hero in this series we'll take you back to whitey Ford's rookie season an unlikely hero Billy Martin with two home runs a 500 batting average in 53 Don Larson's perfect game in 1956 Bucky Dent the MVP of the Yankees when they beat the Dodgers in 78 Brian Doyle batting over 400 filling in for Willie Randolph and this year an unlikely hero in Scott Brosius I'll tell you Joe the Yankees like a pack of army hands they are relentless in their attack and they've done it in a couple of different ways in dominating fashion in game to come from the insane fashion games 1 & 3 here we go Bob Brenly talking about Kevin Brown and he is the Padres hope to get this series to game 5 tomorrow night well Kevin Brown was the best the Padres had during the regular season and in the postseason you expect a similar performance and what a guy does during the regular season during the regular season Kevin Brown rarely hurt himself with the walk in the postseason that has not been the case you think back to Game five of the NLCS in relief a leadoff walk ahead of the Michael Tucker home run in Game one of the World Series three walks two of those walks scored the other extended the inning to allow Ricky ledee did a two RBI double we've talked a lot about the Yankees patience at the plate Kevin Brown needs to do what he does best attack the strike zone he's got a banged-up leg he's been a little under the weather the Padres right now are banged up under the weather and under the Yankees three games to none Game four from San Diego after this quick timeout well the fans spirits not diminished one bit with their Padres down three games to none here come their Padres take a look at the Coors Light starting lineup for the New York Yankees they lead it off with Chuck Knoblauch at second Derek Jeter batting second in short ball O'Neill is hitting third in right field Bernie Williams cleaning up in Center Tino Martinez batting fifth at first base right now the leader by a long stretch for the World Series MVP award Scott Brosius hitting 538 with Ricky ledee in left field he's four out of seven of the series joe girardi catching and Andy Pettitte is pitching and batting 9th how about the defense for the Padres Vaughn Finley and win in the outfield actually Rivera and center taking the spot of Finley Finley has started each game of this world series with the left-hander Pettit on the mound it will be Rivera the right-handed hitting outfielder and that defense backs up the right-hander Kevin Braun we talked about it a lot Kevin Brown has been battling flu-like symptoms he's got the big knot on the inside of his left shin definitely not at a hundred percent but Bruce Bochy likes whatever percent of Kevin Brown he can get as opposed to anybody else on that busy staff a murderous heavy sinker but as Bob said in the pregame comments he has got to stay ahead of the hitters that sinker has a tendency to flatten out when you're behind he goes that four seamer that's with two strikes and our favorite word and potpourri of other pitches from any angle a lot like David Cone with velocity yeah and a sinker in a sinker dr. Bruce Bochy before the game and he told us that Kevin Brown is on a pitch count of one-ninth if he gets to 190 pitches then and only then will bruce bochy think about taking him out that's the situation the Padres are in down three games to none as Chuck Knobloch digs in to lead it off for the Yankees the broadcast also available in Spanish by utilizing the SA P button on your television Kevin Brown an 18 game winner during the regular season just watching Brown warmup he looked freer and looser than he did at Yankee Stadium pitch one of game for strike one home plate umpire is Dana DeMuth you look at Chuck Knoblauch with Tim to sheet at first Jerry Crawford at second Richie Garcia at third base Mark Hirschbeck down the left-field line from the National League and Dale Scott down the right-field line he worked the plate here last night to the shortstop Gomes that'll bring in Derek Jeter this postseason hitting only 213 in the world series 4 out of 13 last night's game here in San Diego he had one hit one walk Knobloch grounded out Jeter waits strike one the Yankees have gone up there swinging their approach against Kevin Brown obviously very much different than against Andy Ashby or Stirling Hitchcock guys who work around the edges of the strike zone when Kevin Brown is at his best he's throwing the ball over the plate letting the natural movement keep the ball off the sweet spot of the bat Yankees know that they're being very aggressive early one ball one strike Dave Stewart pitching coach for San Diego and a lot of shots of him during this postseason such a difference Brown misses with a 95 mile-per-hour fastball 2 & 1 and that's one of those pitches you say how can he lay off of these pit of a pitch like this but the Yankee hitters continue to lay off that pitch just on out of the zone two balls two strikes Andy pettite will work in the bottom of this first inning Makenna Brown finishes off Derek Jeter with the four seam fastball not a lot of sync not much movement on that pitch usually throws that up above the belt gets a lot of swinging strikes a lot of popups on that high four seamer two out nobody on it brings in Paul O'Neill who is not faring all that well in the World Series 2 out of 14 with none driven in strike one each of the first three hitters that swung at the first pitch from Kevin Brown we said in our pregame comments that Kevin Brown has to stay ahead and he stayed ahead of the first three Yankees two quick strikes are there there was another one another hi four-seamer trying to get Paul O'Neill to chase a pitch up high out of the strike zone 96 miles an hour the one-two pitch two balls two strikes the history of World Series play eighteen times the team has been in this spot down three games to none at a best-of-seven series 15 those 18 times to a sweep only three other time down in the series force to Game five trying to defy the odds here tonight PC angle we take a look at the Coors Light stunning lineup for Bruce Bochy San Diego Padres kill vo various leads off at second base with Tony Gwynn batting second in right field six out of 12 in this world series Greg Vaughn is in lamb vattic third Ken Caminiti is only 1 for 10 cleaning up Jim Leyritz the first baseman this postseason he has hit four home runs in his six total hits Ruth interference centerfield with carlos hernandez catching chris gomez is the shortstop and kevin brown is pitching and batting ninth the yankees defensively have Ricky ledee back in left-field they made the start in each of the first two games of this series Paul O'Neill with the rare error last night is out in right field and it's Joe Girardi behind the plate no surprise because the left-hander Andy Pettitte is on the mound for the Yankees and the two danger spots for Andy Pettitte tonight Greg Vaughn and Jim Leyritz the 3rd and 5th hitters because of that cut fastball down and in and I agree with that first bullet point he may be overusing that cutter I think it's a complimentary pitch after you establish your tailing sinking fastball he's got an excellent curve he has a great straight changeup many times he goes to that cutter too often Gill veal varus takes a strength the numbers repented not too good down the stretch with Joe Torre stuck with him in the postseason giving him a start in the division series against Texas you won that game seven strong innings then he lost Game three of the ALCS in Cleveland and it was either going to be Andy Pettitte or Orlando Hernandez in Game seven Joe Torre never had to make that decision he did go with Hernandez in Game two of the World Series and Pettit here in Game four the owe to pinch a ball and two strikes Bobby Andy Pettitte heeding your advice so far three singers on the outside corner no cutter yet women when it's most effective the cutter catches a hitter by surprise and if you throw it too often especially when the hitters ahead in the count that's an easy pitch to get on that pitch hit the foot of kill vo varus and now the first base umpire is going to say that varus went around and ruled it a strikeout as opposed to varus going down to first is hit by the pitch varus is trying to go down there and the home plate umpire Dana DeMuth along with backup from Tim to schita are ruling the kill vo varus is out Joe Torre is satisfied and that's the first out here in the first inning happens more often you may realize a hitter swings at a pitch that ends up hitting him and you can see varus was out in front of home plate with the barrel of the bat the movement of the ball came in and hit him on the back foot on the appealed at first they said yes indeed he did swing which makes it strike three and once he does swing bruce bochy arguing once he does swing and it hits him the ball is dead so Bruce Bochy gets the explanation yo Johnny one out to make sure the call was made by Tim to schita the first base umpire as they appeal down to first varus swung and missed a strikeout for Pettit now tell me Gwynn ball one when is hitting 500 in this world series the postseason 283 the homerun and seven drew it in - no at that yet Kill Bill Varys it could have skipped in the dirt by Girardi embarrass could have made it to first base steadies seated in the dugout as the two okay is grounded a second off the bat of Gwynn two up two down for the Padres here in the first Knobloch on the move from our super shot since snuggles that ball deep in the pocket of the glove Knobloch has an unusually strong arm for a second baseman even off-balance on the run this off a strong throw to get Tony Gwynn the one problem that Chuck Knobloch has had this year throws on double play attempts here's Greg Vaughn lonnis 2 of 11 in this world series is to were home runs in Game one he bats with the bases empty and two out here in the bottom the first ball one last night bond was at the plate in the eighth inning in a one-run game it looked like he made it a one-run game it looked like he had gotten to all of the pitcher enough of a pitch to ride one out of here into right-center got it down toward the end of the bat instead of a three-run home run it was a sacrifice fly it was a one-run game in the eighth and it ended a one-run victory for the Yankees 5-4 two out nobody on one ball one strike Vaughn pops it into left field easy for ledee is great and the Padres go in order in the first each side retired in order as we moved to the second of Game four no score well you heard Tim McCarver is explanation about the dead ball is the ball hit the foot of kill bo Paris here is the sound from Jose Kart now after the play no because I'm more heating issue I'm dead basically when they say the boy hit him but he's dead out of money part of the coach's job in the major leagues is to know the rulebook and Jose Cardenal right on top of Bernie Williams takes a pitch up and in under why in the second with no score it will be Williams Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius Williams just 1 for 12 in this world series two balls no strikes here are the Yankees up three games to none Paul O'Neill is 2 out of 15 Williams is 1 for 12 Tino Martinez has the one home run a grand slam he's 4 out of 11 he's picked it up Brosius the number 6 hitter 7 out of 13 he has been absolutely on fire in this series red-hot Ricky ledee is 4 out of 7 the bottom of the order has been doing the damage for the New York Yankees here they are with a three-games to none lead as Bernie Williams takes ball three up and away 3 & 1 up the middle and stamp by Kevin Brown Kevin Brown along with a lot of other things that he does well an excellent fielding pitcher the latest Fox Sports World Series coverage log on to www.nasa.gov an Brown much like Greg Maddux and many others sinker ball pitchers use that glove you have to become the eighth fielder once you release the ball if you throw a sinker Geena Martinez strike one so I mentioned Martinez 4 out of 11 in this world series one ball one strike remember Dave Stewart's remarks before last night's game the Yankee hitters have to move their feet hitch him inside and don't allow them to become too comfortable Kevin Brown very adept at doing that this one over the outside corner for strike two and the reason that pitch was effective was because the pitch before right forced Tino Martinez to lose his toehold in that batter's box to get out of the way and then Kevin Brown paints the outside corner two and two Rush's waits on deck one out nobody on let's go down to Steve Lyons with Mark McGwire hi Joe certainly in a season to remember the biggest moment was the 70 home runs by Mark McGwire mark have you had a chance now to let it all settle in and figure out exactly what it is you did well I've had a chance but I still can't figure it out yet I mean I don't know if I want to I just want to sit back and relax I mean and who ever fathom that hit 70 home runs in one here I mean it's hard enough to get to 62 but 70 is incredible in an earlier interview on Fox you said that if you hit 70 you'd retire but I don't think you're going anywhere I was talking about 17 golf I've never got 17 golf so I hope people didn't didn't get upset that I'm not retiring all right we'll be right back all right welcome back to Qualcomm Park back here Steve Lyons with Mark McGwire marking this tremendous season you certainly were the highlight what do you think it means to you the fact that you brought so many kids back to this game well I mean one thing we put baseball back on a map I think everybody that plays this game should be proud of it you know kids is our future and if we don't get kids back playing baseball like we did this year you know baseball it's not going to go anywhere I think we're back on the map a lot more kids are playing baseball it's just good for everybody mark enjoy this as much as you possibly can thanks for taking the time showing the guys back to you all right Steve thank you and thank to mr. mark mcgwire as caminetti bounces it off the plate hi hon for Brosius good play one away Caminiti not running all that well still Scott Brosius continues to do it with the bat and with the glove in this postseason I offer off of home plate Caminiti no signs of a limp but considerably slower than he normally gets down that first baseline the Yankees catcher running down to back up the play matching Caminiti step for step down that first base line go on down and here's lyrics ball outside from Andy Pettitte when you talk of a hitter familiar with a pitcher consider the fact that Jim Leyritz caught Andy Pettitte in 39 starts in 1995 in 1996 Jim Leyritz is a matter of fact was the catcher for petted when petted initiated his cutter that cut fastball turn up the first two pitches to Leyritz outside lair it's way out in front strength too it really gets in your mind if you're a pitcher knowing that the guy at the plate knows your complete arsenal out there on the mound so Pettit mixing things up a little throws him a couple sinkers and in a big curveball Andy pettite is just 26 years old the tutelage of Mel stottlemyre Andy pettite over the last three years has won 55 games which is second only in Major League Baseball to John Smoltz who is 156 two balls two strikes on Jim Leyritz - and chew on leritz one out nobody on here in the second no score just missed up it in three and two those are already trying to hold that pitch in the strike zone he's one of the better catchers in baseball at framing those borderline pitches and making them look a little better than they really are Loen away for ball four and a one-out walk the Padres have their first base runner there's a look at merv rettenmund the hitting coach for San Diego here's what he said to Caminiti after the first out of the inning delay I'm saying don't think about it's nobody just a hands back and boom roll get your just your hands you're like it's like trying to encourage his third baseman to use more hands in his swing not quite so much body don't put so much pressure on those injured legs use your wrists in your upper body to the shortstop Jeter for an infield hit the only good fielding pitcher for the New York Yankees as a starter Orlando Hernandez Andy Pettitte probably gets hit by right-handed batters more than any other Yankee this ball off the heel of the glove he has nerve a good fielding pitcher at all and he proved it right there the very playable ball big hopper back to the granite it got there quickly but Pettit had his glove up just didn't have it in a good position we have had two plays made by Kevin Brown on one hoppers back to the box and the first one to Pettit ended up in shortstop and now two on with one out for San Diego and carlos hernandez sitting 361 this postseason none driven in however digs in takes a ball from credit Andre is trying to get on top here in the second and a visit from joe girardi carlos hernandez is a hitter for the padres throughout the postseason that has heeded those words of merton rettenmund uses very little stride at all picks up the front foot puts it right back down in the same spot uses his wrist in his upper body to drive the ball carlos hernandez with two on one out now he does its ball - that might have been a cross up right there whatever a catcher goes have to talk to a pitcher after a pitch like this at ball hit him in the heel of the glove and with that runner on at second base often a catcher's crossed up like he was looking for the local VIN and got the expressive very fortunate that ball did not get further away to allow the runners to advance into scoring position so trouble for Andy Pettitte in the Yankees - on with to an account of carlos Hernandez caught the outside corner to make it two and one Chris Gomez the number eight hitter waits on deck same spot team two couple of generous strikes given to Andy pettite by Dana DeMuth with two on one out the choo-choo to Hernandez front struck him out to gone on the second strikeout on the night for Andy Pettitte a key man to get in that situation because Andy Pettitte missed with the first two tenses the curve is low the basketball and cross up now what's the two o pitch the 2 1 pitch and now the curve again to get our bandit so Hernandez has gone and now it's up to Chris Gomez who has yet to drive in a run as well in this postseason two on two out no score second in it ball one two balls no strikes see on the side of Andy Pettit's hat he turns his head the opposite way next to the World Series logo he has written dad father Tom underwent bypass surgery in Texas recuperating and watching as Andy pettite brings it on to a no three and OH Sharonda real once more couldn't help but think as you look at Joe Torre you had to intervene two years ago but Greg Vaughn that matchup Greg bombs Vaughn's mom is in the intensive care unit in Sacramento two on two out ball 4 to load them up for Kevin Brown this is where the Padres really have an advantage in this game because Kevin Brown is an excellent hitting pitcher helps himself he runs well Andy Pettitte much more inexperienced with the back to the regular-season average for Kevin Brown 207 drove in ten runs may not always be the prettiest swing at the plate but somehow finds a way to get the bat on the ball leritz Rivera and Gomez waiting for their pitcher Kevin Brown to try to drive a min bases-loaded two out did during the regular season 10 RBIs as Bob Brentley talked about number 2 on the list in the National League behind Kevin Tapani of the Cubs [ __ ] the play by Girardi firstly getting is over a little push bunt and Kevin Brown retired to three Padres strand three after two no score back after this from your local Fox station these aerial pictures are courtesy of the Goodyear blimp eagle based in Carson California Goodyear recently increased its blimp fleet to six adding two airships in Europe and one in South America another nice night to fly a blimp in San Diego jobox Bob Brenly Tim McCarver with you as we move to the third inning there is no score here in game number four the Yankees up three games to none Ricky ledee takes a strike from Kevin Brown they had two base hits against Kevin Brown in Game one on fastball Brown starts him off when the curve comes back with another breaking ball Ricky ledee the fourth rookie to get base hits his first two times up in the World Series Bill Terry did it 1924 Billy Johnson did it 1943 and Hal McRae did it 1970 over the outside corner and is gone to see when the day is done coming into this game for he is the first out here in the top of the third inning one away and that will bring in Joe Girardi the number eight hitter with Andy Pettitte on deck on the outside corner one ball one strike on Girardi who's over two in this World Series the Yankees are getting a taste of the real Kevin Brown tonight they only scored two runs in six and a third in the first game we're already trying to lay one down is now in the hole 1 & 2 that may be an offensive weapon that the Yankees can use because of the hobbled Ken Caminiti at third base having problems not only moving but bending over to pick up ground balls and funds make You certainly have a few guys in this lineup that are capable of dropping butts down that third-base line and beaten it out 2 & 2 Chuck Knobloch did it last night a bunt base hit and then the error on a ball that can normally field ball hit by chili Davis to score run full count now on Girardi because of cabinet he's limited range he's going to have to play deeper than normal lay down a bunt use a little speed Girardi tried it with a pitcher coming up fouled it away for strike 2 now the 3-2 pitch into right field for Tony Gwynn did not get a great read on it but recovers 2 gone two up two down for the Yankees in the third against Kevin Brown here's Andy Pettitte oh four four during interleague play this season against the National League East it takes a strike from Kevin Brown quickly on to Greg Vaughan very shallow in left-field an experienced hitter up there no way is going to drive the ball Ruben Rivera pennant chases one strikes out and that's done in Game four for Kevin Brown top of the order for the Padres bottom of the third no score is kill vo Vera's the leadoff man for San Diego with Tony Gwynn to follow and then Greg Vaughn top of the order against Andy Pettitte bottom of the third inning no score there is struck out his first time he went around on a pitch that eventually hit him on the yield took a ball now waits for another one eris shows the buns and pulls back from strength to one and two Joe I think our partner Bob Brentley had a meeting with Andy Pettitte before the game he has not thrown the cutter but three pitches three times tonight on one of two varus off the plate to the first baseman Martina is gone to San Diego in the third you got to believe that the San Diego Padres scouting report included that cut fastball from Andy Pettitte he has gone away from it tonight machining pitch in games during the regular season where he started games similar to this using the sinker using the change-up using the big overhand curve and as the game progresses and he establishes those pitches on the outside corner then that cutter becomes much more effective in the later innings so Andy Pettitte took care of the leadoff man pitching coach Mel stottlemyre pictured there on your right now twin pictured is he digs in with one out nobody on Tony bounced out to second his first time up and takes a ball from Andy Pettitte the hit zone for Tony Gwynn the red areas are the hot areas with two strikes most teams try to go up and in and that up and away pitch many times you can get in to hit a lazy flyball to left field but you've got to be tempted for an eighth time batting champion and make the whole thing right well there's a lot of national league pitchers that would not argue that they have yet to find the cold zone on Tony Gwynn one ball one strike another one for Knobloch it's an easy hunt to going they announce the crowd here last night at 64,000 667 I am going to climb out on the limb and say that this is a bigger crowd here tonight thanks for your support two out nobody on for Greg Horne I'm counting I'll be right with you Vaughan his first time up flying into left first pitch swinging gone taps to Jeter and the Padres going owner for the second time tonight we have played three here in Game four the Sun is setting on San Diego Padres hope it's not on them no score well congratulations to Kevin Brown since a new single postseason record with his 42nd strikeout he just got that Andy Pettitte his 40 second strikeout victim of this postseason to end the top of the third inning that comes with a gigantic asterisk his Knobloch leads it off and takes a strike over the outside corner obviously in this day and age these players Kevin Brown has had many more opportunities to rack up strikeouts with divisional play and then the three divisions the wild-card format he misses just outside the Nahuatl and within this one postseason Kevin Brown is making his sixth appearance and his fifth start we've had the extra opportunities and had extra opportunities within the extra opportunities because Bruce Bochy keeps running them out there why not one ball one strike now block bounces one foul strike two who caught the foul ball mark mcgwire he thought his season was over ring it is good hands what a year huh 70 home runs in one catch up the strong throw away as now black is gone by the way as McGwire made that play down there Paul Molitor was there just to back him up both were protecting the Commissioner down there a boat second baseman in this game possessed very strong throwing arms Varys going to the backhand took a little extra tick just to find a good grip on that ball and then fired a rocket over the first base to get Knobloch so one down the batter Derek Jeter who struck out his first time tries to loop one into right win on the move won't get their base hit but makes a strong one out single good play by the five-time Gold Glove Award winner Tony Gwynn out and right a flag trivia question who was the last pitcher to hit a home run World Series play one-on-one out for Paul O'Neill was 2 out of 15 in this series first time that Joe Torre has had an opportunity to run with his offense Derek Jeter on at first base outstanding base stealer Paul O'Neill contact hitter and Kevin Brown will throw twice as many ground balls as fly balls Jeeter held on by Clarence and a strike from the outside corner to O'Neal and because of that sinker that Brown possesses 18 times this year he induced the opponent to hit into a double play most teams choose to get their runners in motion when possible against Kevin Brown to stay away from that double play to the right side cheater will advance the second two out beerus makes the play to get o'neal follow Neal now two out of 16 in this world series and the batter will be Bernie Williams a cleanup man with Jeter at second and two out talked about this crowd and talk about the support for these Padres no matter what happens the Padres in this World Series people of this community and in the surrounding areas ought to be awfully proud of the way they've come out and supported the Padres in this postseason making this one of the most electric and exciting ballparks for baseball go-ahead run at second with two out Bernie Williams at the plate Berni with only two RBIs in this world series which came in a home run in game 2 ball one - at Bernie Williams is done here in his eighth season the batting champion this year with the 339 average he's going to say that's the resume he will likely take with him he heads into free agency at the end of this year if that does come to pass on the outside corner one ball one strike take with him and add to former manager of the Yankees Buck Showalter in the ballpark tonight Jeter at second with two out one ball one strike on Bernie Williams Kevin Brown wants to talk and there's Buck Showalter Bobby you had a chance to watch him maneuver the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998 which was not always an easy task as you might imagine for an expansion ballclub but pretty good nucleus of a team there and with a few wise free agent signings the Diamondbacks feel that they can be very competitive in the near future and this man's name has come up several times throughout the regular season and into the postseason I knew there was going to be a time here in cattle roundabout way as Williams tries to put his Yankees out in front here in the fourth inning Brown is having a tough time getting with carlos Hernandez on the signs here and the approach to trying to get William runner at second two out Williams pops it up left side of the infield channel left gomez the shortstop inning over a one-out hit by Jeter the Yankees strand their first bottom of the fourth inning Game four no score the Padres with a man on 2nd are using the third sign there's the first one there's the second one and then the pinkie inside and here's the pitch to Bernie Williams inside fastball to end the inning now those could change from ending bidding but those were the signs in the 4th caminetti he takes a ball pinkie for pop-up pinkie for pop-up inside fastball Caminiti leritz and rivera for the padres here in the 4th inning with no score Padres down three games to none caminetti is strike the outside corner one ball one strike it was a former bullpen catcher great in a rain delay oh gosh two balls and a strike two balls in the strike in caminetti tanks one of the outside corner two and two caminetti bounced out to third his first time up a high Chomper Brosius made a good play and he pentacon into and out of trouble two walks in a single in the second inning but Padres left the bases loaded goes down swinging I know you're trying to get as much as you can out of Caminiti but he just is not healthy his legs just buckle under him on check swings we've seen it happen several times throughout this series called that ball off of his left leg last night once again goes down in a heap at home plate you really have to admire its guts in his grit for going out there and trying to get it done but you have to question his effectiveness at this point at some point you have to wonder if the effort and that determination is worth having a player out there who is not closer to 100% and now is 1 out of 12 at the plate with two errors in this world series Jim Leyritz with one out nobody on Bruce Bochy delaying his lineup tonight before he talked to caminetti to see if he was alright to play you said it a couple of years ago we were doing game timid Ken Caminiti has always paid the highest compliment that a player can be paid when his teammates and the opposition call him a gamer he is trying to do everything he can but just ineffective likely due to injury in this world series three now now on leritz in baseball that is the best word as a compliment that you can pay a player gamer let's cut it loose on three No it's a strength of the outside part three and one even if he was hitting he's going to take that pitch that is a pitchers pitch try to make it be in your zone and it is struck out three walked two and allowed only one hit full count that caught Joe Girardi till you picked up something before the game about an hour and a half before game time Joe Girardi after more than 170 games this year goes down in the right-field corner blocking balls it's a it's a horrible drill that most catchers go through in spring training and I have never seen a catcher do that in October this late in the season the three to the leritz gets out in front of the plate Girardi after it two up two down layer it's now over one with a walk Aflac trivia question who was the last pitcher to hit a home run in World Series play Aflac trivia answer kenny holtzman the open days at a home run off Andy Messersmith in Game four of the 1974 World Series on the way Holtzman was the fourteenth pitcher to hit a home run in World Series play two out nothing doing for the Padres so far as they bring in Ruben Rivera to the plate he has the only San Diego hit so far striking Pettitte one ball one strike he takes his signs from joe girardi tips his head down a little bit just barely peeking underneath the bill of that cap to focus on the target is one Wanda Rivera strike two Joe Torre telling us before the game he hopes Andy pettite works hard enough in the bullpen before the game to wear himself down a little bit so charged up and so rested he's more effective when his arm is a little weaker not going 100% is Rivera chops it foul and still wanted to when Andy pettite gets the normal rest which is four days between starts he's 51 and 18 throughout his career when it's more than four days it's 14 and 15 is his record considerable difference when he is too strong not in the flow he hasn't pitched since game three the ALCS as he misses down and in to her Vera two balls two strikes and it was not an effective outing for Petitte at Cleveland he was the loser in Game three lasting only four and 2/3 innings allowing six runs on eight hits four home runs the to tune up the middle Rivera I guarantee that's incredible Derek Jeter Julia's left over the second base bag the bounced to first so good no score after four Andy pettite the beneficiary of a tremendous play by Derek Jeter on our Fox super-shot ranges way up the middle makes the play that's good enough in itself look at this off-balance throw a one hopper by design to Tino Martinez to get a very speedy runner Ruben Rivera at first base easily super shot super play credible throw from Derek Jeter with his momentum carrying him across the infield throwing across his body miss Tino Martinez leads off the fifth inning and takes a strike one ball one strike from Kevin Brown who is allowed only one baserunner the one-out single by Derek Jeter lasted that's it strikeout for along the way that's strike two Brosius and ledee will follow for the Yankees the opposite way and throat Tino Martinez has his fifth hit of the World Series here in 1998 frustrating for a pitcher to make his pitch as Brown did then and then have a strong left-handed batter fight it off the other way and find a hole Gavin Brown did exactly what he wanted to do then he kept the ball off the fat part of the bat and Tino Martinez just muscles it through that five-point-five hole on the left side that's Tony Quinn's shot you're used to seeing him do that not Martinez so Martinez at first with nobody out here is Brosius he takes a strike Yankees have their leadoff man on for the first time tonight and Brosius who flied to Center his first time is now 7 out of 14 and even 500 in this world series Brosius in last night's game got the Yankees started leading off the seventh inning with a home run against sterling Hitchcock and capped the scoring for the Yankees with a three-run home run in the top of the eighth we've been some ground strength too so many times throughout the postseason we've seen the Yankees take advantage of situations when they're at the plate Tino Martinez on at first base layer is holding him close to the bag a big hole in the right side so Kevin Brown's going to make it tougher forces to hit it that way sigh corner strikeout number five sometimes it's not necessarily the pitch it's how you got there and Kevin Brown gets there with that inside singer and then he goes back outside on the corner excellent sequence by Kevin Brown so Brosius is over to one on one out here is Ricky ledee 93 miles per hour from Kevin Brown ball one what day struck out his first time is still four out of eight in this world series the corner you can see that unusual way the first move that Kevin Brown has from the stretch it's that perky jerky coming up and that can freeze a hitter two of the elements of hitting is to wait and have quick hands sometimes it's tough to wait when a guy like Kevin Brown jumps at you like that and he'll do that not only on his fastball he'll do it on his changeup again so he tried to give that batter to speed up his his movements at home plate and then throw a changeup out of that herky-jerky delivery Lindy shoots it down the right-field line into the corner into the Yankee bullpen wind ends it out they will hold Martinez at third at second and third with one away here in the fifth Ricky ledee his fifth hit of this world series it's a one-out double regular day is not fooled by that herky-jerky delivery of Kevin Brown he has been right on every fastball Kevin Brown has thrown him in this World Series most are not intimidated it all hooks that ball down in the right field for the Yankees have to scatter down there grabbing the chairs get them out away do you put Gilardi on here with Andy pettite up next Girardi an excellent butter by the way Brown brings it back to brown gets the second out of the three times tonight already in his position first pitch seeker one hopper right back to the mouth check the runner a third make sure he's not going anywhere and get me out at first base Brown held that look at third just a little bit longer than normal see Tino Martinez trying to jockey down that third-base line now it's up to Andy pettite for the Yankees second and third two out struck out his first time by Kevin Brown the infield in see how quickly that ball got back to the mound if he doesn't make that play keys are on top instead he did there Arnie the second out Theo play by carlos Hernandez to saber on one ball one strike that is a terrific play by the Padre catcher anytime a ball bounces in front of home plate it makes it doubly difficult to block the ball just in front of all kind of scoots toward of Hernandez fine play by Carlos Hernandez two balls and a strike on Andy Pettitte we know our teen has the runner at third Ricky ledee with a devil in this inning is at second No count three and one anticipate kind of taking another pitch here normally you turn your hitters loose on a 3-1 count with two runners in scoring position but because Andy pettite is not experienced as it better anticipate he's going to take a strike here to the cash flow back here in San Diego we moved to the bottom of the fifth inning scheme summary is brought to you by MCI Andy pettite four innings only one hit no runs no runs for Kevin Brown five innings he struck out six the bottom of the order which has been so potent for the Yankees in the first three games of this world series a combined 1 for 8 the one coming from Ricky ledee with the double to set up the scoring chance with Girardi to come backer to brown and Kevin Brown struck out Andy Pettitte carlos hernandez chris gomez and kevin brown to the plate the padres here in the fifth inning with no score georgia than 18 times in the history of the world series best-of-seven format team down three games to none had never come back to win the series 15 of the 18 were swept and only three teams forced just a game five that's what the Padres are trying to do here tonight against Joe Torre's Yankees force a game five tomorrow night and then try to force this series back to Yankee Stadium oh and two in a hurry on carlos hernandez under those circumstances game six has only been forced one time in postseason play and that's when atlanta just did it by winning two in a row here in San Diego gets Padres in San Diego won Game six in Atlanta got a shot of david wells from nearby Ocean Beach near Point Loma went to Point Loma high school he would be the starter in game 5 if this series gets to game 5 tomorrow night opposed Andy Ashby they win hoping that's the case Oh score fit bidding the O to pitch swing by Hernandez still Owen to so many times in the game of baseball we talked about making adjustments and the team that makes the adjustments more quickly is the team that normally is going to have success we talked about Andy Pettitte that cut fastball inside on the right-handers he has gone away from that so far in this ballgame he's only shown it very few times now if the Padres make an adjustment and start leaning out over the plate look for Joe Girardi to lead his pitcher back inside all into strengths and carlos Hernandez leading on Bennett his struck out three that's foul malleson and is always ready for something inside there are not that many did pull hitters in the major leagues anymore Carlos turn end is certainly one of them always ready for something on the inside part of the plate I think a lot of that Tim has to do with the fact that he doesn't over stride he doesn't get his body out of position he's always ready to hit that inside pitch Hernandez strikes out and that's the start to the bottom of the fifth strikeout number four for Andy Pettitte this year's winner of the true value Roberto Clemente man of the Year award the Cubs Sammy souls are so deserving Sammy could not be here this evening to receive this award as he is in his country the Dominican Republic helping with hurricane relief congratulations to the true value Roberto Clemente a man of the year Sammy Sosa who hit 66 home runs and will get many many votes for the 1998 National League's Most Valuable Player it's been a series of hats for Mark McGwire throughout 1998 post-season press conferences has been one hand after another somebody just got a nice pop on national television Gomez with one out nobody on strike two one of the few pitches that Andy pettite has left in the middle of the plate but you can afford to leave the change-up in the middle of the plate if you get it down see the early movement by Gomes and now the one to pick two balls two strikes with Kevin Brown the San Diego pitcher on deck Chris Gomez a walk his first time up four out of nine in this world series there's Pettit getting hit by the batted balls a right handed hitter but he stays with it to get the out to God they check on the health of ante Pettit as his infielders converge around him out on the mound like I got him on the inside of the left thigh missed it once again completely this time with his glove unfortunately for him the ball stays right there and he's able to complete the play some pictures become fielders after they released the ball others become protectors and he is one of those protectors at the pizza someone become targets that it almost missed the throw back from his catcher Girardi after he asked for a new baseball he must be having trouble seriously speaking seeing with a ball coming back from the home plate area as he just flinched and nearly dropped the throw coming back from Girardi is Kevin Brown flips a base hit into right-center field O'Neill over to cut it off and Kevin Brown we tried to bunt his way on with the bases loaded and two out in the second wanted to be retired to end the second inning heats the fifth inning alive with a two-out single no surprise Kevin Brown had two base hits in Game two of the NLCS score to run may remember that game he slid headfirst into third base at dirt all over his uniform now kevin has to be aware of the move by Andy Pettitte right there then he had about a one step lead off and he almost caught it it's going to be about a half step this time go back to softball rules stay on the base until he pitches you're not going anywhere the pennant showed him that move in an effort to try to pick him off to end the fifth inning he's got the bad leggings walking with a little bit of a limp hit by the batted ball in Game one off the bat of chili Davis took it off the shin not a hundred percent but obviously feeling good enough to pitch and strike out six through five inning there is a slow roller like a bunt Pettit feeling his position throws low got him and the inning is over Andy Pettitte has been tested in the inning he records two of the outs gets the assists with through five no score into the 6th inning no score one of the world's most enduring symbols the Goodyear blimp eagle has been providing aerial pictures all night long for a look inside the Goodyear blimp and how it maneuvers try its website wwe.com speaking of maneuvers and how about the way that Andy Pettit maneuvered that ball from glove to hand check this out every infield instructor in the world is cringing as they see that you're always thought to take the fair hand into the glove get a grip and then make a throw there's not locked to leadoff sixth inning with Jeter and O'Neill to follow top of the order against Kevin Brown third trip through the lineup for Brown was turning away hablok has grounded out twice once the short ones to second Jeter has one of the three Yankee hits tonight on deck now block when strike two more from brown on the outside part of the plate you can see Knobloch not able to hold up in time here it comes on Owen too that got up on Knobloch in a hurry didn't it he started to flinch and Hernandez already had it in his glove as you look at Chuck Knoblauch career profile 1991 American League Rookie of the Year Gold Glove Award winner last season the right side for Baris to his left putting hankies in the 6th inning I'll bring in Derek Jeter the Yankees have brought their good luck charm he's been on the trip batboy game to back in Yankee Stadium Jimmy D'Angelo he hasn't lost an batboy uniform for New York Yankees George Steinbrenner ran into Jimmy and his father in Cleveland during the ALCS Jimmy have been hit by a foul ball year ago and undergone plastic surgery told the story to mr. Steinbrenner and he said all right you're in uniform tonight and batboy for the Yankees and they've brought him along there was talk that they're going to sign to a multi-year contract the Yankees continue to win with little Jimmy DeAngelo Manning the batboy tours or still have to repeat ninth grade imagine him getting back to school Jimmy was your homework I did it I I did it I should Don Zimmer ate my homework Jeter to the shortstop Gomez one too late patient one out hit for Derek Jeter and chris gomez did all he could if Chris does not catch this ball on the first hop he's not going to get the speedy Jeter Jeter out of the box in a hurry but that short hop right there cost Chris Gomez the out sparkling defensive play right there only the speed of Jeter allowed him to beat it out that's a play we've seen Ozzie Smith in his career in st. Louis practice before ballgames Jeter will get sliding gloves or brace for his wrist as he runs the bases he's on with one out he came in you come into any postseason series with the Yankees now do you expect to see sparkling plays from Derek Jeter and we have in this game already ball off the bat of Ruben Rivera back in the fourth we've also seen very good defense from Chris gomez throughout this postseason one on one out for Paul O'Neill that's in the right field in trouble Quinn won't get there to the wall win with a barehanded pickup off the wall in its second and third one out as Paul O'Neill has his third hit of this series it's a double the last time the Yankees had runners on at second and third and one out the bottom of the order was up but now you have the meat of the order Tony Gwynn hurriedly getting the ball back in through kill the old varus the whole cheater to third base but the fat part of the order up for the Yankees here with only one out Quintin troll right there by guilty oh there's the second base they may have had a play at Paul O'Neill Tony Gwynn did such a good job of getting to that ball quickly bare handing it and getting back to the cutoff man who may have had an opportunity to get O'Neill at second base the problem with that is you have the shortstop covering at second base and there's nobody there to tell you where to go with the ball because varus's first responsibility is home have your back to the plate and now with second and third one out first base open the infield is brought in Bernie Williams will get his chance here to put the Yankees out in front here in the 6th inning back to brown and eternity as he waits for him throws to first for the out the run scores and the Yankees take a woman up in lead that had to feel like an eternity to Braun waiting for that ball to come down it stayed up and with that Derek Jeter scores the first run well it's not by design I can assure you that but the Yankees are really making full use of home plate in this game offensively a lot of balls have been bang either off the plate or the hard dirt around home plate Kevin Brown with no choice but to take the out at first the reason that is at nasty sinker by Kevin Brown now runner at third two down for Tino Martinez ball one that by the way was a contact play Derek Jeter going on contact anything on the ground Bernie Williams thought he was safe at first but punched out by first base umpire Tim Kishida pitches low to a no on Tino Martinez so the Yankees lead in the series three games to none they lead here in the sixth inning of Game four one to nothing with O'Neill at third and two out runners in scoring position in this postseason but with the count 2 & O the padres elect to walk Tino Martinez in pitch to Scott Brosius so the intentional walk to Martinez brings in Brosius who is old for two tonight but seven out of 15 in this world series big numbers throughout the postseason for Brosius he leads his Yankees with those 14 RBIs in this postseason first and third two out let's dismiss that by punting strike one that was as bad as Scott Brosius has looked on any pitch in this series that's a slider way off the plate Kevin Brown trying to keep this a one-run oh and chill on gross divisional series tilt orient died by sending the runner at first base the runner was Chad Curtis we'll see what Joe does here Carlos surname is out in front telling the infielders now what he's going to do should Martinez run if he does he'll stop getting the run you could score it's an option first and third two out leo just lays off a ball and two strikes words away but not far enough for anyone to advance 2 & 2 on Brosius quicker base runner at first base that would have been a great opportunity to try to advance carlos hernandez blocks the ball but doesn't immediately get on it if the runner at first breaks it puts carlos hernandez in a very tough situation you try to throw to second and get the runner advancing via hole Pitino Martina a very cautious baserunner friezes initially that has to go back to first pitch and that's why the runner to third base leads off in foul territory should Paul O'Neill have been hit by that ball it would have just been a foul ball if he's in fair territory he would have been out so that counts still 2 & 2 Yankees score first two run two hits a walk two left bottom of the sixth inning win Vaughn Caminiti coming up what a nothing Yankee with runners on at second and third the runner at third takes the lead it's a contact play right there you land on your right foot and that right foot propels you forward when the ball is put in play on the ground and that's how Jeter had such a good jump from third base Tony Gwynn leads it off for the Padres big bats are here in the sixth inning for San Diego down three games to none down one to nothing to Andy Pettitte and New York win Vaughn and Caminiti when is over too in a hole here on to my dad that no other base do you take a walking lead third base is the only base that runners take the walking lead and it's very very important to get that jump going toward home and Jeter had it got a look at that number for Andy Pettitte his last World Series start as he makes his third in his young career here tonight is when he lasted eight and a third innings allowing no runs in Game five in Atlanta Yankee victory as they took that three games to two advantage back to Yankee Stadium and one in Game six when reaching Tino Martinez has to wake safe this is the only time it's appropriate to slide into first base to avoid a tag you can see Tino Martinez with a diving effort Tony Gwynn hook slides to the outside part of first base the only time this place should be attempted by a runner my dad that sliding past a bag is the same as running past the bed so with this infield single by Guin the tying run is on with nobody out for Vaughn caminetti and Leyritz one to nothing New York here in the sixth inning to the shortstop Jeter gets the high hop at second safe at first most shortstops would go to first base on a ball like this but Derek Jeter going back across his body to get the lead runner another fine play by Jeter Jeter always has that bare hand close to his glove to make that exchange quickly from the glove into the throwing hand and he's able to unload the ball quickly and get the lead runner so Quinn will take a seat he's forced at second and now the batter is caminetti Oh for two with a strikeout a groundout flip to Jeter on to 1st 4-6-3 a leadoff infield single nothing after that and we moved to the 7th we'll return after this word from your local Fox station welcome back for the seventh inning of game number four this copyrighted telecast is presented by authority of the Commissioner of baseball and may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without expressed written consent Ricky ledee first pitch swinging fouls away strike water the Yankees with the 1 to nothing lead here in the seventh inning and a three games to none lead in this 1998 World Series Ricky ledee has a double tonight he's also struck out he is fared well against Kevin Brown and game 1 against Brown he had 2 hits and a walk and because of that that last pitch up and in to Ricky ledee a purpose pitch for Brown a flair into shallow right might drop will drop Ricky ledee another basin two out of three tonight and the leadoff man is on for the Yankees in the seventh here are Bruce Bochy's thoughts on his starter tonight Kevin Brown he says he feels fine I don't know if he's being honest I mean he's a little banged up he still has a big knot on the shin physically I think he's getting over this bug but he still has some signs of weakness or he did yesterday but he said he'd be good to go and he's a warrior he'll be out there and we'll keep a close eye on when asked how he felt Kevin Brown told the local reporters I feel of Girardi at the plate after the leadoff single by Ricky ledee no pun here a hit run however a real possibility to pitcher up next and no one warming for the Yankees if Girardi does make it out Andy Pettitte would probably try to get the runner over with the bun with one out rardy takes ball one low I think he took on purpose to get ahead of Kevin Brown so Joe Torre could put the hit-and-run on Brown has just given up his sixth hit of the night hit and run is on it's fouled straight back one and one Joe Torre told us back in 1996 against the Atlanta Braves in the World Series the difference in managing American League as opposed to nationally he says it's simple in the national league you try to make something happen before that pitcher spot comes up Joe Torre trying to make something happen here a hit and run with Joe Girardi at the plate you're already at the plate with Andy Pettitte to follow check on the day we heard from Bruce Bochy I think we all want to make mention last night with the moves that he made in the eighth inning and in the ninth inning he has been heavily criticized in the media second-guessed that first guest last night Bruce Bochy is a solid individual who stood there took the criticism stands by what he did last night answered the questions answer the critics and did so with a shrug of the shoulders and his thought is I gave it my best shot we did what we thought was right sticking with Andy sheets let's say in the ninth inning against Mariano Rivera not going to the left-handed hitting Greg Myers or using John Vander Waal as a pinch runner he stood there and took it he has his Padres in the World Series they are the best team this year that the one to the Girardi is fouled back and he pet it with a jacket on wedding on death Gerardi strikes out one away here are Bruce Bochy's thoughts on being second-guessed after last night's maneuvers in Game three it's the nature of the game I know it's going to happen especially in the World Series and you know every moves going to be scrutinized and when they don't work you know it's going to be your fault that's fine I'll take the blame for it but you know for me it's just doing what I think is best for this club and what gives this club the best chance to win this kind of guy the Padres having their dugout in Bruce Bochy one on one out and Pettit drops down a perfect bunt there is so to cover Andy Pettit against the sacrifice accomplished score at two four and down to second is ledee with two away here in the top of the seventh that's what Joe Torre told us he would do even with one out and his pitchers hitting they will be bunting in these situations and Andy Pettitte just lays down a blueprint in front of home so now Chuck Knobloch like a good leadoff hitter in the National League will hesitate a moment he did now he walks to the plate slowly to allow Pettitte a chance to get back to the dugout take a seat after running down to first base Knobloch even takes a long time when he doesn't have to wait for his pitcher to relax on the fence very deliberate hitter before getting into the box and even more so in this particular event he's up with the day at second and two out Yankees leading one to nothing here in the seventh and a strength from Kevin Brown Padres in the bottom of the seventh inning will have Leyritz Ruben Rivera carlos hernandez Danny Meyer's getting ready for the Padres out in their bullpen vo one ball two strike talk about varying arm angles Brown varies his move to the plate with that last look back towards second keeping an eye on with a and not picking up the glove until the last split second that little spin move will freeze runners at second base a lot of pitchers use that spin around move we've caught the spaghetti move where they wheel around and throw the ball to second base that freezes a runner now block to the right side high hop for varus stays little that gets Knobloch at first hesitation on the part of Kim to shoot in to make sure later it's held on time to stretch bottom of the seventh one to nothing New York not much of a difference bottom of the seventh inning is one of nothing the Yankees out in front and as Leyritz Rivera and Hernandez get ready to go Andy Pettitte back on the hill having allowed no runs on only three San Diego hits Leyritz o for one with a long ball one from Pettitte has worked the leritz away in both previous at-bats keep in mind that leritz has excellent power the other way two of his postseason home runs have been hit the right-field two balls in the strike including one off a hard throwing left-hander Billy Wagner of the Houston Astros at the Astrodome off the plate again easy-out at first and later its is over two of the walk and that plate has a few dents in it tonight the latest Fox Sports World Series coverage log on to www.mptv.org/outdoorwisconsin on games that Kevin Brown starts here at Qualcomm Stadium the grounds crew softens up the area in front of home plate they rake that dirt they water it repeatedly because Brown throws the sinker gets a lot of ground balls that help slow those grounders down a lot of the balls how I've been hit right off the home plate and you cannot soften home plate Andy Pettitte loves the dirt around home plate because it's helping him to Rivera down the right-field line roben reserved talk about a young man who went up to the plate looked in one area Pettit has been working away away away and Ribeiro looked away and went away that piece of hitting not Ruben Ribeiro so the tying run in scoring position with one out thanks to this from Ruben Rivera now it's carlos Hernandez Oh for two tonight against Andy Pettitte with two strikeouts up the middle for pennant hung up between second and third tag by Brosius her name remains at first to up we have talked about Andy pettite fielding his position the last couple of chances he has fielded his position very well and that pays off here in the seventh bad baserunning by Reuben Rivera you're in scoring position you've got to make the ball go through hung out to dry as a base runner at second base they tell you to ball hit to your left you advance a ball into your right you freeze the wild-card is that ball hit back to the mound when the pitcher makes a good play Rivera reacted immediately to a ball hit to his left pennant made the nice play they had the youngster hung up out there check on carlos Hernandez the fielder's choice off the ban of Hernandez scored one for five on the out the tag by Brosius Wanda nothing Yankees in the bottom of the seventh inning utter it first with two out for gomez who takes a strike one ball one strike tying run at first with two out strike two on gomez you think about what this organization the Padres are thinking about not only this World Series it not only trying to stave off the four-game sweep here tonight they're also thinking about the November 3rd ballot and proposition C which outlines funding for a 411 million dollar downtown stadium using some public money little high two Gomez two balls two strikes that's on the outfield wall here at Qualcomm Stadium all this stadium is packed with 65,000 anxious fans wondering if they will get an opportunity to come back here tomorrow night three balls two strikes on Chris gomez talk to people about proposition see that a it's around fifty-fifty as to whether it'll pass gomez his career against Pettitte three out of ten as a former Detroit Tiger that's very interesting most first baseman well--but would be behind the runner at first base with a 3-2 count Joe Torre is thinking right here is if a balls hit into the gap you keep Carlos Hernandez as close as possible particularly with Pettit's boo great to pinch Gomez the flyball to right O'Neill is there and we move to the eighth inning of game number four the 1998 World Series Yankees up three games to none leading one to nothing Kevin Brown back to the mound as we move to the eighth inning here in Game four Yankees leading one to nothing in the numbers for Kevin Brown seven innings only one walk which Bob you came in talking about it was an intentional walk in his pitch count 94 pitches through seven innings this has been a more typical Kevin Brown performance here going right after the Yankees hitters getting ahead in the count and has not issued an unintentional walk in the ball game tonight to put himself in trouble here's Derek Jeter the two three and four hitters for the Yankees who are getting closer and closer for their 24th World Championship is Joey Hamilton the right-hander and Randy Myers a lefty get ready for the Padres out in their bullpen it's a one-run game the Yankees up one to nothing eighth inning Jeter takes ball one at best Kevin Brown will work this eighth inning and that's it his spot is due to lead off in the bottom of this eighth two balls no strikes O'Neil who was heavily involved in the run scoring inning for the Yankees in the sixth with a double set up second and third in the infield RBI groundout by Bernie Williams 2 and 2 on Derek Jeter after a sinking fastball on the outside corner comes back with the four seam fastball at the belt right down the heart of the plate full count on Jeter who's on the bench for the Yankees for tutors Davis basado range I'd handed Curtis Spencer and Maurice oh ho the 3-2 pitch a leadoff walk through Kevin Brown so we open the inning talking about walks on the part of Kevin Brown that is his first unintentional walk of the night Dave Stewart will pay a visit to Kevin Brown got O'Neil up with Bernie Williams to follow and then Tino Martinez this is the spot in the order in which Bruce Bochy last night went to the left-hander to start the eighth inning Randy Myers he issued a leadoff walk to O'Neill and then was relieved by Trevor Hoffman who followed with an out a walk and gave up a three-run homer so restored heads back to the dugout O'Neill gets ready to hit tell you that if there is no baseball and this Sunday kicks off Halloween screams week on Fox with all-new world's funniest big news Simpsons Halloween special plus it all knew that 70s show followed by the x-files it all starts Sunday at 7:00 Eastern six central right here on Fox there's not a Game seven of the World Series on Sunday here's Paul O'Neill 1 for 3 with that big double in the sixth ball one low to a No we were joking earlier when we talked about the pitch count so is Bruce Bochy when he said 190 194 Kevin Brown that was his way of saying to keep him out there as long as I possibly can might be running out of time here the eighth leadoff walk now the two old pitch to O'Neill the foul ball two and one one thing you look for in a sinker ball pitcher if he's losing his effectiveness if he gets the ball up in the strike zone and the ball tends to flatten out as you throw it up higher in the zone so far brownness missing but he's missing down low in the zone once again another ball off of home plate you normally do not see Paul O'Neill swing at a 2 o pitch that's on the outside corner again the hidden run a very viable alternative for joke Tory speed on the bases and a contact hitter not moving his jeter ball three three and one on O'Neill Bernie Williams on deck Bernie has the games only RBI on an infield groundout check on Jeter another check on Jeter Andre is wondering if Jeter might take off here with his 3 1 pitch to O'Neal tactic the Tim I know you don't like no I don't like 3 in 1 counts to run I think it's a hitter's count an offensive gallon he's going and the chopper to first bad too late it's too old with the Leyritz instead of flipping the ball to brown trying to slide in and get to the bag first and O'Neal beat him there I know we'll take another look at it it looked to me like O'Neal beat the play Jeeter on the move Paul O'Neill swings once again at a pitch he probably would not chase in a 3-1 count it chooses to try to win the bang is right Wow look safe to me they better keep an eye on Kevin Brown or he might not stay in this ball game he's going toe to toe right now a second base umpire Jerry Crawford as Bruce Bochy argues with the first base umpire Tim to Tschida so now chew on with nobody out Joe I think you're right if he flips the ball then you don't have this problem look safe on that play and you can see Kevin Brown standing at the bag a little toss by Jim Leyritz to brown that's a routine out at first base instead it's an infield hit and the Yankees already leading one to nothing have two on with nobody out and Brown is trying to settle down out on the mound he had Dave Stewart run out there to try to keep him in the game as he went face to face with Jerry Crawford Hernandez just went out there you can see by the look on the face of Kevin Brown that he is not anywhere close to being calm interesting to see how he works to Bernie Williams two on with nobody out Yankees leading one to nothing here in the eighth and the chopper to the third basement Caminiti is throwing time in its second and third one out I have not seen in a long time those funky high choppers that we have seen on both sides Caminiti had to wait that ball was lost in the lights momentarily he held back until the ball got into a position where he could pick it up and the super shot you can see him making that strong throw with the seams across the infield to get Bernie Williams now with Tino Martinez at the plate first base open this is the second intentional pass being given to Tino Martinez tonight he's 1 for 2 with a single amount two intentional walks this will load the bases with one out and Scott Brosius we'll be the hitter Yankees had the bases loaded and one out without getting a ball out of the infield in this city here's Brosius hitting 370 in this postseason tonight he's over 3 in the world series 7 out of 16 responsi with the infield in thinking that Brosius runs too fast DoublePlay so many hitters are beating that ball into the dirt to Brown still with a good singer broken band flare over the into score is cheater they will hold O'Neill at dirted it's tuna nothing Yankees in the 8th you play the infield in DoublePlay depth there is a chance that Chris Gomez could have made that play by bringing the infield in no chance the little flare that hit the infield dirt and Brosius drives in another run as jammed badly breaks his bat but you can see from where Chris gomez was initially positioned no chance to get back on that little floater now the infield still in bases-loaded only one out and Ricky ledee at the plate ledee is 2 out of 3 tonight to back up his performance in Game one against Kevin Brown when he went 2 for 2 plus a walk the day may have the opportunity here to bust this game wide open bases-loaded one away two balls no strikes on Ricky ledee with O'Neal Tino Martinez and Scott Brosius third to first on the bases for the Yankees the two all into left field well hit Vaughn going back to get our nail tags and scores it's three to nothing Yankees here they finish getting closer and closer to their 24th World Championship of the 1998 New York Yankees and for all that we've said about Scott Brosius in the unlikely hero not too far behind him is Ricky ledee it's not easy to get a ball in the air against Kevin Brown but Ricky ledee managed to find a way to hit that sac fly to the warning track in left field now first and second two down and a strength to Joe Girardi there have only been four fly ball outs in this ballgame what days plates a run that's strength to on Girardi and again Kevin Brown due to lead off in the bottom of the eighth-inning so this will be it first and second two down and this a play by carlos Hernandez incredible is this relentless crowd tries to rally support for Kevin Brown how about that picked up by Hernandez you're not supposed to block these balls this is way over in the left handed batter's box somehow finds a way to get the glove out there in front of it get the body over there but did get the glove in good position two heroes for the barely misses with ball two two and two great enough in the Yankees lead here in the eighth-inning Gerardi one hop to kill vo beerus for the eighth inning is over but the Yankees get two big runs two walks in the inning two left New York is stranded eighth bottom of the eighth inning number nine spot to lead off three nothing New York welcome back to San Diego with the Yankees leading three to nothing here in Game four we bring you our Red Lobster catch of the year all fresh in our memories from last night first out of game number three the catch to rob Chuck Knobloch the trap against his body showing the umpire and then he's our Red Lobster catch of the year for Steve Finley who is not in the lineup tonight for San Diego John Vander Waal leads off as the pinch hitter for the Padres last night entered the game as a pinch runner ended the game standing on 3rd representing the tying run Bruce Bochy goes to the left-handed pinch-hitter against Andy Pettitte and Vander Waal pops it into Center Bernie Williams is there one away here in the bottom of the eighth this could very well be the last game that Bernie Williams plays for the Yankees we're talking about it between innings with Ricky ledee performance in postseason play doing as well as he has done the Yankees could make a case that the pressure is not on to sign Bernie Williams at Ricky ledee could very well be the center fielder of the future kill vo varus at the plate over three two balls no strikes from Andy Pettitte talk about World Series performances as various as the count three and Owen will take here with one out nobody on look at the World Series performance by Scott Brosius another potential free agent a couple for the Padres Kevin Brown tonight starter Ken Caminiti Steve Finley who we already talked about with a catch last night not in the lineup tonight his World Series performances count a lot three balls and a strike ala full count one out nobody on the three - to kill vo varus stays up there the count full with tony gwynn to follow time running out of the Padres to try to force a game five tomorrow night the Yankees have scored three runs on eight hits riding the left arm of Annie Pettit here as we play in the eighth inning of Game four three consecutive fouls on the part of Baris and it stays three and to get a look at Jeff Nelson warming up I think he is warming up for Greg Vaughan embarrassing when both get on I think you'll see Nelson in the game again the 3-2 pitch to put Faris aboard here in the eighth Tony Gwynn walks in here are his thoughts on if this series should end to here tonight if it should end tonight has been happy no question about it we brought our goal was to get here and win it and if we if we end up getting beat tonight you know I can't be that disappointed you know I mean I can't say it yet but Yankees have a great club and really offensive ly that's about as balanced the club as I've seen in my career it's coming from Tony Gwynn one of the most accomplished hitters was playing in his 17th season in the big leagues one on one out for Guin into centerfield Gwynn has another hit now it will be Greg Vaughan with two on one out representing the tying run here in the eighth-inning and it looks like that job for Andy Pettitte Nelson enters tony gwynn is now 8 out of 14 in this world series we'll be back antivenin coming off a Schanke outing at Cleveland losing Game three of the ALCS turns in a terrific performance here tonight that was him walking into the dugout to get congratulations from his teammates now he sits and watches as you look at his numbers for the night as Jeff Nelson will deal with Greg Vaughn representing the tying run here in the eighth inning strike one Nelson's numbers in the postseason this year very very nasty on right-handed hitters as you might imagine with that sidearm delivery two on with one on lays off the hi delivery one ball one strike look at Jeff Nelson's delivery throws that frisbee like slider out of this sidearm slot he brings it to Vaughn on one wall strike two Greg Vaughn with two hits in the World Series both homers 50 on the year trying to tie it with this swing strike zone for the tying run at the plate for the Padres here in the aid far outside - and to Caminiti who was one out of 13 in this world series waits on deck - gone pong strikes out Nelson comes out of the bullpen and strikes out Greg Vaughn for the second out here in the eighth put a slider out of the strike zone down low and away rotation of ball sweeping across the plate ends up off the plate outside down low Derek Jeter helping a madam youth umpire tonight so a visit from Joe Girardi is Caminiti the switch hitting third baseman stands at the plate fastball away you can read your Artie's lips they're the one thing you don't want to do is come into him and Eddie's power zone bloody bludgeon caminetti hurting all over if you end up hanging one of those sliders down and in that's perhaps the only ball that can hit out and it looked like Girardi was saying fastball away at least to start him off and we've seen Jeff Nelson two left-handed hitters for that the outside corner the backdoor breaking ball which once again is a dangerous pitch if you don't keep it on the outside corner with two on two out three nothing Yankees in the 8th up for ball one nidia obviously a lowball hitter especially that area right there that's his power slot that down and in Red Square that's that back door slider Nelson trying to sneak one over the outside corner and another visit from Joe Girardi Girardi wants to make sure if you wanted outside and the picture wants to throw that slider you go out and make sure otherwise get one right down the pipe and on a to old count caminetti a very dangerous sitter on a pitch like that and now here comes Joe Jory he has Rivera getting loose out in the Yankee bullpen he also has Stanton ready if he wants him with a cap to a No it looks like he will go to Rivera see caminetti could catch up to a to old fastball from Nelson but not from Rivera and that story's thinking right now it will be the Yankee closer here the eighth inning with New York leading three nothing Andy Bennett started the bottom of the ain't fitting then Nelson and now Mariano Rivera I think what Joe Torre is thinking and I that this is a terrific move and if you're looking for for a fast ball you're going to get the best fastball that we have to offer right now and that's Mariano Rivera Ken Caminiti is announced for the second time I already announced him once he has a to old County gets announced again and facing an untouchable so to speak Louis career postseason er a 0.53 for Mariano Rivera they said they were there is a third to keep the bases loaded with two down and Leyritz coming up O'Neil was more than content to allow Varys to score as throw us into second but Tim Flannery held up Kill Bill Varys if this is the ninth inning that's the proper play for Tim Flannery the third-base coach to make but not in the eighth that's a marker that you're giving up right there Paul O'Neill is reminded three-run lead with two runners on to throw the ball in the second base for get home you know what the runners moving up parish should have scored on that ball but he was held up by Tim Flannery here's lyrics Oh for two in the war for postseason home runs in 1998 swinging for a fifth strike one the tying runs are on faris win Caminiti ahead run at the plane lyrics here in the eighth inning game four rainout the Yankees one ball one strike laris has to tell himself to force Rivera to get the ball down in the strike zone inside corner strike two and lyrics did not agree you Gerardi sets up on the inside corner Rivera hits the target into centerfield for Bernie Williams the basket catch to end the eighth inning and the Yankees all of a sudden are three outs away from the World Championship here in 1998 after eight daily three uppen I above here in San Diego the Goodyear blimp eagle has been providing aerial pictures all night Rivera leads off at the controls pilot Nick Nick Larry 1998 the 100th anniversary of Goodyear in the 73rd Ford's blimp fleet as Dan Miceli takes over as Mariano Rivera at the plate obviously a good athlete see that swing in the count one ball one strike thank good year for helping us out with our coverage throughout this World Series no double switch the Yankees brought in Rivera and he leads off here the night fitting is in the hole 1 & 2 facing Dan Miceli make the reason that Joe Torre did not employ the double switch was that Joe Girardi was calling a shutout and the shutout takes power Artie over the fact that Mariano Rivera has to hit for himself about this two straight games that Rivera's pattie a pop up on the right side he'll be embarrassed they're one away Mariano Rivera taken care of here to start the ninth inning and you start to think about this 1998 New York Yankees team and where they ranked in baseball history American League record 114 victories during the regular season they are striving for their 125th if you include the postseason to go along with just 50 losses with a baseball season in 1998 it is extremely difficult to compare teams from different eras nearly impossible you always hear comparisons of teams these days to the 27 Yankees and years from now when as is typical with baseball arguments the debate rages about which team is best in baseball history the 1998 Yankees will have to be mentioned up the middle the shortstop Gomez to his left can't get it and not block his on with one out here and then I did it take a look at this most dominant teams with the most wins to win the World Series the Pittsburgh Pirates with 110 victories 1909 New York Yankees 1927 murderers row 110 victories he'd go down that list 1986 New York Mets 108 victories to winning his teams in history baseball history did not win the World Series which includes the 1906 Chicago Cubs long losing to the Chicago White Sox they were swept by the White Sox four in a row one on one out and check on Knobloch at first at the end of tonight's game I'm Tim and I will select the Chevy truck player of the game one on one out for Derek Jeter Yankees already leading three to nothing and Jeter takes a strike on one in my opinion the New York Yankees in 1998 if they sweep the San Diego Padres or win the World Series they are better than the 1975 Reds and better than the 1961 New York Yankees the regular players are not quite as good but they're pitching in every regard in every facet middlemen starters and a short reliever Rivera puts him over the top [ __ ] down to Jeter one ball one strike and to think that the Yankees are doing what they're doing in 1998 without a true superstar they don't have the one guy the megastar they do it as a group they did it during the regular season as a 25 man roster and got production from every one of those 25 men we bring up the 75 76 Reds in the 61 Yankees because there are a lot of people who think that they are better than this year's edition of the Yankees but the pitching and I think the regular players were you look at Joe Morgan Pete Rose with the Reds Tony Perez Johnny Bench strength to on Derek Jeter great players great players but they're pitching not even close to this club not close the same of the 61 Yankees a good pitching staff Roger Maris 61 home runs Mickey Mantle 54 that year I think they had six players with over 20 home runs that year 240 as a club but the pitching in my opinion takes the 98 version of the Yankees over the top one on one out Jeter fouls it away Bob Brenly has been dispatched down to the clubhouse area with the possible postgame celebration Padres have three outs remaining in the bottom of this ninth inning trailing three games to none three to nothing here in the ninth inning one on one out for Jeter to carry Steve Lyons also standing by as Miceli tries to finish off Derrick Jeeter the Yankees are playing an outstanding team here tonight and in this series but when you start to look at what the Yankees did against the lesser teams in the American League this year the mark of a truly dominating team see they went 11 and 1 against Tampa Bay and went 10 and L against Kansas City eight and three against Detroit seven and four against Minnesota Sandy Koufax in his career was seventeen and two against the Mets just to go along those lines the Mets were struggling Sandy Koufax dominated the New York Mets struggling teams in the American League this year were overmatched more times than not by this version of the Yankees now block is running as Jeter flies to Center for the second out here in the top of the ninth inning so if that mark of a champion is the ability to dominate or at times destroy the lesser opponent that has been the case the 1998 New York Yankees Randy Myers trots in from the San Diego bullpen he'll tank over here in the ninth inning for the Yankees leading three nothing Randy Myers is set to go he has struggled in this postseason six games with an ER a of 13 and a half last night came on in Game three with his Padres down two games to none leading by a run and issued a leadoff walk to the left-handed batter Paul O'Neill for the inning was over the Yankees had a three-run home run from Scott Brosius and a two-run lead although Neil is at the plate now one on two out a ball from Randy Myers just to finish off we were talking about before the break it is impossible in my mind to compare the 1998 Yankees definitively with the 1927 Yankees because it was a different game that era dead-ball era murderers row with obviously Ruth and Gehrig and Combs but it's tough to compare a team of 1998 to a team that played 71 years ago in 1927 O'Neill rips a line drive caught by kill vo varus to end the top of the ninth inning but there is no arguing with this 1998 Yankees team one of the best ever to play they're three outs away from a World Series ton Bruce Bochy on your left Joe Torre on your right two managers is we prepare for the bottom of the ninth inning here in Game four the Yankees leading three games to none and leading this game freed it up in two classy individuals and two more we went still rooting for his team over on the dugout bench as Ruben Ribeiro will lead off against his cousin Mariano Rivera we would like to thank Bruce Bochy and Joe Torre for their help during this series Jim Leyritz and the Padres for a rally against one of the game's best closers Mariano Rivera Ruben Rivera fouls the first one away for strike one New York Yankees are three outs away from their 24th World Championship one ball one strike and true to his word Bruce Bochy is doing what he told us he was going to do before the game that's keep with the right-handed batters against Mariano Rivera at the suggestion of the hitting instructor merv rettenmund we must mention that right-handed batters this year against Mariano Rivera are batting 194 235 against left-handers two balls and a strike two and two so the numbers don't back up no the statistics do not back up the thinking of the Padres but this backs up what Bruce Bochy did here last night in Game three by allowing Rivera to hit against his cousin Mariano Rivera despite Myers joy the choo-choo full count to Ruben Rivera Ruben Rivera tonight three of the better swings of the Padres have taken a single back in the second grounded out in the fourth robbed on a play by Derek Jeter to his left doubled back in the seventh the 3-2 pitch Rivera up the middle leadoff base ship and Roman Rivera is on to start the bottom of the ninth inning for San Diego Chuck Knoblauch slipped and going to his right his first step as right foot came out from under E I don't think he would have had a chance on the ball it was hit too hard you can see Knobloch slipping right there and that slip cost him any chance of getting Rivera now Carlos Hernandez who was successful last night against Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning with a two-out single that was followed by a single by the pinch-hitter Sweeney who's on deck now one on nobody out and those takes ball 1 to it all and then swinging on to a no fouls it away two balls and a strike should the Yankees win we'll have the American general World Series postgame show but right now the Padres try to put that off for another night as Hernandez waits at the plate 2 & 1 after this foul ball a two-run home run does not help the Padres in my opinion Hernan has had to be taking that pitch Padres need base runners to get the tying run up there ground ball to Jeter 26:43 and the Yankees are one away Jeeter not block Martina's a victory by the Yankees tonight would give New York their 24th World Championship which would be the most ever by any professional sports franchise one more than the Montreal Maroons and Canadiens of the National Hockey League the Yankees are one out away mark Sweeney pinch-hitting strike one sixty-five thousand have gone silent here in San Diego as Sweeney is at the plate 101 count they're one strike away a season in which the Yankees won 114 games during the regular season the one strike away from their 125th win of the year including postseason against only 50 losses fighting back a smile the starter of times game as sweetie grounds to third Brosius fittingly with a he's done it again number 24 the world champions of baseball in 1998 Joe Torre with another world championship in his third season at the controls of the New York Yankees he won it in 96 he wins it here in nineteen from the Atlanta Braves from the San Diego Padres eight straight emotion for these Yankees never tested during the regular season tested a bit in the and League Championship Series by the Cleveland Indians and a clean four-game sweep of the San Diego Padres here in the World Series not only are they smiling on the field the Yankees that is but from ear to ear you could just feel Darryl Strawberry smiling convalescing at home with thoughts of Darryl Strawberry throughout this postseason and everything that he has been through honored by former teammate Jim Leyritz of the Padres fundraiser in the dugout right now watching the celebration of the New York Yankees and they have captured their 24th World Championship a 125 win season including the postseason and in total only 50 losses Andy pettite was the starter and winner here in game number four he gets the victory two and one in this postseason Kevin Brown suffers the loss in Mariano Rivera gets his sixth save of the postseason to wrap up the 1998 World Series we'll take a break we invite you to stay tuned for the American general World Series postgame show the Yankees have done it they have finished what they started a four-game sweep over the San Diego Padres here in the 1998 World Series we'll be back with more right after this
