unique racetracks and today it unveils its new look we are live at Pocono International Raceway on TNN Motorsports [Music] they don't make days any nicer than this one here in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania welcome everybody I'm Eli gold we are live here at Pocono International Raceway and Buddy Baker it's a racetrack with a brand new racing surface that is very smooth the tone turn three to five miles an hour faster than last year everybody's looking for a lightning fast race today and qualifying was so very interesting Phil Parsons behind the pole sitter Jeff Gordon a lot of interesting names well sure where you've got Derek coat back there Hut Stricklin guys that you don't normally see right up front but the thing about this new racetrack is it's a clean slate for everybody you don't have the same bumps that you had 20 years ago that the Aaron Hertz know and the Waltrip snow so maybe we'll see one of those guys break through that could be an equalizing factor but the one constant is our pole sitter Jeff Gordon third week in a row he's been at the top spot and earlier this morning he and Glenn Jarrett spent some time walking around this new Pocono racing surface well I I'm down on this newly resurfaced race track here at Pocono with the pole sitter Jeff Gordon and he proved last year he could dominate this place almost won the race a year ago won the pole here so obviously you've taken a liking to mystery pavement well uh yeah I really like it it's the first time I've ever sat on the pole here at Pocono and you know we've run good here in the past and I was a little bit worried because shocks are usually really really important here and as smooth as the track is you've kind of thrown that shot combination out of it and we didn't test here either so I've been real happy with the car this is one of our best cars and it's a car we won with at Dover and I hope it works on the flat tracks today well we're in the turn three here you hear just as you go off into the front straightaway this was a good place to set them up past them yeah this leads up to the long straightaway very long straightaway and you can really get on a guy and if you if you just take your momentum up off this corner you can really get underneath the guy and that's where you want to position yourself going into that first term we'll be looking for that a little bit later on it is incredibly smooth out here we had a chance to talk to several the other competitors to see what they thought about it some interesting comments let's hear from them well first of all the tracks really smooth it's uh it's hard to say that by Pocono because it's always been a rough racetrack everybody's I enjoy coming here we always run into here but boy when I showed up two weeks ago for this test that couldn't lives in the same place because all the bumps on fronts trade were gone it's real smooth I guess you had clearance Cagle the old fella looked after all these pavement jobs looked after this place and I can't find a band place in a race track this year is faster in every corner and it just feels great it's hard to judge exactly what it's gonna be like for racing but it sure is smooth it sure is nice it has a nice wide groove a lot of new pavement that we race on you it's so hard to race on because if you get outside the groove you're history this doesn't feel that way we're gonna run them by yourself out there and you make a mistake and get out lied you're still okay which is kind of unique but you know the tracks nice and smooth has still got some waves and places where they had it before but kind of adds a little character to the race track I guess so but it really they really did a great job paving it it's just gonna be a pretty smooth racers pretty smooth racetrack for the race cars well the second biggest story this week at Pocono Dale Jarrett crashed in qualifying on Friday broke some bones Randy Pemberton is standing by with him well thanks Glen Dale we know that you're hurt is there a possibility that you can't go the distance today here at Pocono yeah I just really don't know there is that possibility I'm pretty sore today just a matter how much my knee can stand and you know how things go but I'm gonna try to make it all the way but I have Mike Wallace standing by and and I feel good about that because they have a lot of confidence in cameras today and this is a tough old racetrack buddy maker will be very interesting after a competitive market race yesterday without many incidents on the track it'll be interesting to see if the cup guys can follow suit there was a lot more driving than yesterday that we've seen here in the past Eli what you have here is a very very tight field from first to last is very loose presents feet so it's gonna be a give and take right at first and if we well no turn three is the key to getting around this racetrack it's also the key to keeping the car in one piece if you go way out correct 200 laps around the two and a half mile Pocono International Raceway on Father's Day 1996 glad to have you with us here on TNN Motorsports and Jeff gearbox and off they go on this long seven tenths of a mile from straightaway the longest rates in all of NASCAR racer turn number one is basically a high-speed pin turn but a little more putting random exede in the past now the teams are going can turn one to turn to this is a triangular trip maybe three turns they're heading middle through the Long Pond straightaway to that corner that you're looking at it would be the total turn that space for the tunnel that leads him outside to inside the racetrack as they get across the tunnel they now work this north straightaway at seventeen hundred and eighty feet they blow by Jeff Gordon right there putting Hut Stricklin at the point now in the Circuit City machine and now they work on the flat turn number three where our fans drop onto the finished product like the one of course Jeff Gordon got caught on the outside and even with the great surface they have here what he did on the other side of the guy's got momentum or downside he had to give way so as they work back into the corner Hut Stricklin is only left in Daytona and he shows the way right now outside now inside of it his derrike cope and second Phil Parsons in that new singing there they can't truly run side-by-side like Mark Martin was alluding to in the open Derrick got underneath got under a putt Strickland coming off turn one made to pass into the tunnel tor not I'm not sure anybody can run through the tunnel turn and lead the Hut Stricklin going back to the lead there on the anti was there coke you see Derek's role of decide and get back in that preferred line take a lower line looking for a place to make his move here any straighter and third there he's got a good run going here at Pocono he loves this racetrack and there's a vintage Pocono seen this wide drag strip like main straightaway folks whose every in Savannah's Derek coke now works the inside to his advantage he loud their foot mark mark related to wide in number one corner two years ago last year even he could mean think of going on the outside to make it back Jeff Gordon Gordon in third now I think Jeff Gordon covered from his even he may have slipped to whatever in the tunnel turn on that first laugh and that's why those cars got by him it looks like he's recovered and headed back towards the front [Music] 1780 feet from turn two to that flat turn number three allowed we have reports from several team fat now that they're baked trouble trouble trouble in the corner is joe nemecheck was having his car kicked out through the corner goes across the grass as one other machine belts his some flame you see at the top of your picture and we right here as Bobby Labonte has problems with the Interstate Batteries Chevrolet we've got a bit of a fire in the back the car looked like the car must have backed on the wall or something maybe maybe exiting the tunnel got it together with another car going in turn three there there's Bobby being helped from the car he quickly took care of all of these safety gear the paraphernalia unhooked and jumped out and was helped he saw at the very end by one of the track workers here scary moments though Bobby is okay again we showed you him being carried away and helped over by the safety crew and he is just fine but boy the Interstate Batteries Chevrolet to see clearly the fire extinguished in a hurry before that baby went up quickly tremendous damage there around the fuel cell and all over left for a corner that that car really had a hard lick on the left side but do you know the way we were talking about before the race is that flat corner you don't have the bank to hold it we'll take another look and see what so what we can see already up in the wall there yeah we caught him he was already sideways and back in the wall and looked like Terry Labonte trying to make an evasive action I got in the back of Nemechek and I think that's why Nemechek one had spun to the inside of the racetrack tremendous damage when you have a flat corner it's a fast one it's it's the slowest corner on this racetrack but it's still lightning-fast and you don't have the bank to catch the car so we are under caution for the first time today Jimmy Makar and the boys take the war wagon the know I I had a chance to do that earlier but I just chose to stay in line I guess a couple of got there before I did somebody must have got to my left rear or something just didn't just didn't out out get him to the corner did you look at your car I didn't have to good answer right there what's not a classic line very unusual to for these desk are machines to see that the type of claim but here we go three or four wide again Bobby Hampton likes the inside of the front stretch there's a merchant was driving making a charge court to prefer you see right now Bobby Hamilton trying to get by and with their attacked off the corner there Bobby got real loose coming off 22 on the right of your screen he's run well here goes Rick mast in the number one car he has had a very quiet weekend but young 25 years old but he makes all the right decision he does he has a great car so while a 2 4 s to a corner he has one of the fastest cars now we'll see whether Ricky wrote can pull away from and again magazine car here they haven't even shaken that machine before they showed up here at Pocono on Friday morning it's a new style of car for the team one that team manager Richard Greene is running for the obviously not too shabby but he is about 25-30 car lengths behind already there's third place and a goodly distance back his fourth place Earnhardt leading the next pack of machines there's the spread you see where's Derek Koch and we talked earlier in the day Steve Wallace both for those home-built chassés Steve Levitan the fellas changing some of the geometry - they're linking Rusty Wallace who is used predominantly those Ronnie Hopkins jassi's hobbies and Motorsports for whom Derrick crimes there in the Babcock car they have really shown no flavor say pets ashes for the most every car builder out there and then show now its in-house till this very moment it's been paying off I was talking to one of the other one of the rival crew chiefs this morning Eli and he said that what derrike copes car is basically a tendency to the Ford body on because the fellow that built the car used to work at Hendricks so that's basically Hendrick car with four [Music] Levi look at to remember at Daytona and older meanwhile Terry Labonte Ward Burton both getting by Bobby Hamilton they're battling at eighth ninth content spot now they're on the 15th lap you see upper left-hand corner of your screen 185 lat Lane as Kenny Schrader brings that group past Ricky Craven now you could see terry labonte just for second check up and give him time to get back in the car [Music] Travie nothing a lot of time he thought about a good race car driver gives you break like at Terry Labonte's won the bet okay that jerk Jimmy Spencer's made a pretty good fool he started back in the 18th position he's willing the top ten right now they're getting crazy on the backstretch over there Ricky Craven a disastrous time here at Pocono a year ago he crashed the car and qualifying at all sorts of problems this year he qualified for it nothing like seek time is it oh boy it's about three different types of super speedways just really like Indianapolis one flat corner the first ball is kind of like Michigan and then the back straightaway as you going across paternal turn is like no one corner that you're not set up for no matter how did you carry today straighter coming at you in six there's another thing that the the guys out there doing that we haven't talked about is a shift this is the only basically oval track that we run on that the guy shift and what they'll do you live ill he'll ship from third to fourth right about the start/finish line maybe a little bit beyond and then they go down and turn one there's a battle for the lead but you're right took the lead going in the tunnel turn on the derecho but let's see if he can keep it down low or if Derek can sneak by on that North shoot now with helpful we've seen these maneuvers before they agree on secrecy there you theity went from first to third in one corner there of course Jeff Gordon could see that derrike cope is gonna make the maze so he just counter checked and went on the bottom first a third one tricky right a poke continues to show the way all then full two and a half miles now back to what you're talking about filled with the shifting the third gear is the one to run fourth gear is technically overdrive and there are different styles of ownership that have been to the corner some ship coming out some ship going in others it is a ship at the other end of the racetrack as well so it's not just one particular idea that's fourth place now you're watching is what Strickland works to the inside of Dale Earnhardt good scramble going to the tunnel we'll see if they learner makes this patented move in backed off let us go and usually he tries to get that gonna need somebody but that time he didn't now back up front Ricky Rudd once second he's got it this time was it down low but and low drag coz the straightaways are so long here when the racetrack gets slick on front tires still work well maybe the other guys don't we're just intent on not getting too messed up with traffic and if we can keep them out front or towards the front where the lines lined up you know rather than side by side racing eighth ninth and tenth we'll be in good shape those other guys are behind us all four tires they complete us here for a little bit but we're still gonna stick to our plan how much difference is there in the end lap time stay between the two times the four times now this tire is just incredibly came up here two weeks ago and tested we'd run 55 60 laps the 60th lap as fast as a fifth lap so good you've done a great job with this tire it'll run forever until it's worn out it doesn't give up and they're nowhere near worn out either so we're real happy to just put two and two well they changed the right sides that time they're planning on if they have to make another well on the next stop be it green or yellow it'll only be left side tires I've seen the changes only right-side so many times but well I'll tell you when they with a no right-side change on any stop green or yellow that is pretty impressive and they learned a lot they tested here for a couple of days a week and a half ago so you know they know they they're just not shooting in the dark here they tested
