nothing to gain by it and he certainly didn't either and we lost a lot from it so like I said you know maybe it wasn't intentional but it's happened twice and he hit me twice both I'm usually done because of the overheating but they have refire in the back trim it is rolling on its own down the backstretch and so they learn it might not have started with the starter but he had it parked so the car would coast down the hill and he could let the clutch out in gear and turn the car that's why all the cars stopped like they didn't backed up the wall in case the starter would not turn them over For those curious, Terry Labonte no longer holds the Iron Man streak. That honor currently goes to Jeff Gordon, who went from his rookie season in 1993 to his retirement in 2015 without missing a single event; a streak of 797 races.
It’s a shame the streak came to an due to an injury in 2000.....I think he broke his ankle or something in the summer Daytona race but I may be wrong. He missed two races including that year’s Brickyard 400.......in fact there may have been another crash somewhere shortly after because I remember Labonte having dizziness........and I distinctly remember ESPN’s Bill Webber mentioning that Labonte rode roller coasters as part of his recovery process to test whether he could handle the G-forces......funny the stuff that sticks with you.
Looking back it clearly seems to have been post-concussion syndrome issues.
In any event, I remember Labonte’s streak being a big deal back then......and then it was a pretty big deal for Rudd too.
It didn’t seem to be a big deal for Jeff Gordon - but for good reason. Labonte and Rudd were pioneers of the sport (to what it is today) and started their streaks in 1979 and 1981, respectively, when the sport was a lot less glamorous and a lot more dangerous.
