NASCAR exclusive has been brought to you by the Charlotte Motor Speedway home of the coca-cola 600 and the Winston and welcome to the 3/4 mile Richmond International Raceway hello I'm Ken Squier live coverage here on world war two the Richmond 200 down below me some 36 cars are now at the ready to go for 200 laps 150 miles first of $123,000 at stake in the second event of 1991 for NASCAR's grand national competitors my colleague for today's broadcast is Neil Bonnett and Neil we have a chilly windy day here and with cold tires on these cars and the hot-blooded talent out there I expect that the fur and fenders is really gonna fly in thank goodness these guys have super speedway cars and short track cars after Daytona we wouldn't have had a fail here but we've had so many cars the guy that sat on the pole at Daytona didn't even make this race hopefully and get the drivers cool down the tires wound up have a good race without a lot of rigs for more details on the story let's go to the Fram fit center here's Mike joy Kevin tires will be indeed a story of this race Goodyear is here with their radial racing tire the first time they've used it on a short track in grand national competition they've tested it here but not in these cold weather conditions the teams are wondering if those tires will go the distance or if they'll need to stop and change compounded by the fact Bob Newton's fledgling Hoosier tire company from Indiana is here seven cars will start this race on whose your tires led by Elton Sawyer way up in the fifth position and butch Miller who's done well here in Winston Cup competition the Hoosier drivers think they can go the distance with just one stop for gas and no tire change be interesting to see and we'll keep the tabs on those seven drivers throughout the afternoon let's go back topside to my colleague Neil Bonnett can you know sometimes I don't mean to be rude but sometimes I have a trouble for your accent so I've imported somewhere in LA and they smell a lower Alabama we've got a guy that a lot of people here know pro football unknowing from ricin he's a big big race fan he owns race cars he watches him on the short tracks we got a got in Ken Stabler from Alabama we gonna turn him loose okay thanks a lot deal nice to be here with you what a difference a week makes last week a rookie sat on the pole for the Busch grand national week this driver right here Jeff Burton qualified 33rd this week like I said with a different such a weak man sitting on the pole now let's go to my colleague a guy who is a seven-year wizard Cup veteran let's go to feel part I'm in with Jimmy Hensley Jimmy there's a lot of pressure on everybody here your car is owned by a local businessman it's maintained here in Richmond and you don't have a spots around a quarter pound how do you deal with that Jimmy well longtime field it is plate fresh you know Don's trucking out of nearby Chester owns a car don't have a sponsor so the guys really want to do good for the hometown folks you like me apart we always like to run dudes I know we certainly all running dude right now we look at off hanging out maybe it's good FaceTime maybe attract some attention hopefully you know Jimmy if a sponsor doesn't materialize could this be the last race for this effort well look I was gonna run for five races start with good good luck Jimmy we'll be right back in just a few minutes after these commercial messages with more action from Richmond two rows full of Winston Cup drivers one of these drivers here again let's talk there so we've got a lot of good stars up her butt dead legs are so beautiful we could our tires working forward today all right Harry good luck let's go back up top to Neil Bonnett and Ken Squier okay Winston Cup drivers are finding a little harder to qualify against these grand national guys Neil Davey Allison is the best he's up there in seventh spot and that leaves the Winston Cup group here Ken it seems like every one of these Busch races we come to the bursting guys once I've got get bumped a little bit farther back the bush guys are getting better and better speaking of getting buff back I guess this would be a perfect opportunity Stabler likes to get right in the middle of Hubble he's been intimidated by Joe green let's stick him on a little black cars having talked to our Nardin well I've been around some guys at intimidate you like the joke race you speak about Intimidators here's one right here we're with Dale Earnhardt Dale had any kind of predictions on how quick it long it'll take you to get to the front I'll know Kenny we we're gonna just run them pretty consistent here we got to run a long ways we're gonna try to conserve our tires but there you got to be pretty competitive and get in our weapons ooh and get to the front without too much trouble please with the setup of the car at about the tire situation practice see how the tire situation goes and you know maybe we call away all these times have a good run thank you guys last time out he was a winner in Grand National ranks that the goodies 300 if they taunt an ill Danny you know they seemed like these guys they're gonna try to go along with these tires and there's a lot of guys with a winter race here in the tire might be a big factor 150 miles the distance one pit stop probably for fuel they may try to go the entire round on one set of tires and we'll be back with more in a moment taking some extra moments to warm the engines on a very chilly day here in Virginia great temperatures yesterday dropped 20 degrees today let's see if we can get a word Ken Stabler with a man who sits on the pole and that's not going to happen now they bust up that front roll and they're moving everyone back away from the field as we get ready to go green here this afternoon it's 200 laps the distance let's take a look at the starting grid for today's race 36 strong here's how they'll line up Burton is on the fall his second pole position Virginia driver youngest of three brothers number 99 beside him comes Jimmy Hensley well-known name in Grand National ranks out of Ridgeway Virginia in row number two today Bob Vila Mariana Texas his Oldsmobile back after that harsh wreck a week ago down at Daytona and the defending Grand National Champion Chuck Bown originally out of Oregon starts on the outside of row two for Row three Alton Sawyer's there from Chesapeake Virginia with his Buick and Tony Hirschman is scheduled in car number one to start on the outside of row three from Northampton Pennsylvania in row four its Davey Allison out of Hueytown Alabama Chevrolet the havilland car and alongside is Kenny Wallace's st. Louis Missouri his Pontiac that's pretty well known in these ranks row five Dale Earnhardt and with him comes Mike Waltrip for row six today it'll be Harry Gant and alongside of him Darrell Waltrip row seven that's going to be Bobby's daughter and Tommy Ellis the 88 brand national champion / row number eight today there you have it barrier the mid-atlantic champ for a couple of years in butch Miller out of Coopersville Michigan row number nine is Todd Bodine and Morgan Shepherd from Conover North Carolina Roche and Dale Jarrett Hickory North Carolina and Rick Craven from up in New England Concord New Hampshire row 11 is Edgar II of the saxenburg Pennsylvania car dealer up there joe nemecheck of lakeland florida in row number 12 is Jack Ingram on his lap of honour around the tracks of America his final year five-time champion and Davey Johnson road 13 is Ward Burton and Steve Grissom from Alabama row 14 Robert Pressley and Dave Resendez from Massachusetts borough 15 it's Dale Shaw out of Center Conway New Hampshire and Jeff Gordon from down in Indiana in row 16 Troy Beebe from Modesto California Cecil units in road 17 Jamie ovie from North Beresford Vermont and Tom Peko Mechanicsburg Pennsylvania or McConnell's brick Pennsylvania and rounding out the field Barney McRae of Colchester Vermont and Tommy Huston a victory North Carolina starting dead last watch Huston remember when he did a year ago in South Boston 28 the first in the Grand National race you're riding with Bobby Labonte car starting in the third position on our why yeah these guys are really saw it on the steering wheel we got a crazy circumstance happen yesterday was on got the car set up there these tires that got get some heat they don't get a little friction forever these cars around get some heat those tires they don't have their handful 9 Chevrolet Oldsmobile tonight new at 6 Pontiac support comprised the feel that will be taking green in our live coverage on world sport of the second Grand National race of the Year race number one Daytona a week to go on the high banks Earnhardt flew to victory in car number three three two green taking some additional laps to warm them up and try to get some heat on those tires before they turn them loose again it's kind of twofold these little B six motors that any of these cars they do turn a lot of rpm to get the kind of power they used to run with on these track to the VA they twist these little B six motors a lot and you got to have that all jump you up if you don't have talked the bearings out the first few laps so they're doing two things they're trying to get the heat of the tires are trying to get the motors at operating temperature and that's hard to do with kind of weather we have on the right Neal this field has a very different complexion than the one we saw last week at Daytona there are four drivers in this race who didn't even qualify for the goodies 300 another four who never completed the first lap there and five more who weren't around at the quarter Waypoint that's a third of this field that didn't do much racing at Daytona in addition the pole sitter at Daytona David Green didn't even make this race and the pole sitter here Jeff Burton started 33rd on the super speedway at Daytona the whole field here is covered by less than one half a second in the single round of qualifying Time Trial so it's a good tight fast field but very different from what we saw week ago and like one car that has not rolled his Tony Hirschman was scheduled to start six today this morning he heavily damaged his also wheel in a practice crash hoping to get it back down is not to come to pass that far the will crash this morning was an indication of a big tractor four five six rod up his brother back with the track change so much today with a big temperature dropped it let's take a look at the weather here at Richmond as we get set for a start that tells you all you need to know chilly out there need your mittens today temperature down in the low 40s at the present time that's warmed up a bit in that breezy little 16 mile-per-hour wind that's what raises happened here that wind chill I kind of felt that on the opening out front I was going to say a pop now about there it's pretty cool to me getting set for start organizing around Jeff Burton out of South Boston Virginia whose dad has brought three boys along in the racing game second one of his career took the first a year ago in South Boston ready for market over and I think what look inside this car right here like the joke in that car you're right out there 56-mile with the windows rolled everything don't have windows and as soon as they start turning those little motors 8,000 rpm the heater great another bobby labonte and the pemrose third position giving you these pictures as we get set for alive spacebar filled in so the pit procedure we're talking today the occasion we'll be getting back to that subject considerably before the afternoon is over and Neal both pace cars are coming back on the track incidentally as opposed to Daytona a week ago the AMA Langley pace car which is bringing the field around now will be parked out and turned one as per usual and the second pace car which is parked that turned to on the big super speedway now will be parked and turned three here at Richmond yeah but right now the big thing is a big scramble everybody's trying to figure it out in they're rolling with the punches they're changing it from race to race and I think this is a looking so you attic you today we'll see how this thing works in NASCAR reevaluate uh it's hard for me to picture I said in the booth I know the guys with a got their hands full talk about this track I think we're one away right now from probably getting this thing underway 10 degrees in the turn three banking in the frontstretch getting set for start and it's 60 feet wide all the way around and that's the telling story here there's room to run but turn number two will pinch you you can really get in trouble in terms of we're one lap lap away now this track right here can't when they when they built the track larger they use part of the old existing facility the front straightaway coming off for turn is real easy off a four down the front straightaway turn two is almost an afterthought but when they're real wide took corner getting in real real tight off of two that's usually where the action happens in one and two down there light is off on the pace car getting set for a start stay with us this afternoon this is live it's Richmond Virginia cold day temperature just barely breaking the 40 mark as we get set to turn these guys lose kidneys guys we've got to be thinking about they know Mike joy mentioned we have a lot of guys to go out the race right on the first or second lap these guys will do a little bit of racing they got a lot of in the season to look forward to they've got to be careful but yet they still want to win races so they got a it's kind of a chocolate again so hard to run a server and the pit meeting this morning they dedicated some time the fact you're not gonna win and lap one lap let's see if they're going to today right the beginning or finally by jimmy hensley on the outside position had turned three leading lap one bound white dot a week ago a date battles on the inside and when you go on a Saturday in Daytona Beach Florida in the fourth position I mean out of her number of 200 laps michael waltrip runs in fifth Darrell Waltrip in six easily made a good move early in the race maybe that talking to the guys take it easy early because the 99 Carlos hold inside and got the lead from the outside which is hard his wife and fellow racer fellow racer Fatima we did not qualify for this saying if you did swap out for this race is not embarrassment there phil was so close there's a lot of real good cars went back home and we would point out those four cars that started on the leaders folks like prey baby you'll be dr. Tommy Houston report a bad run and he tried to make up for it right now career is waiting his time he's picked up only to spawn the baby owls into the corner you think a chance we might see a payback sometime before the dam here's a Rick on the back straightaway right now spin out of turn number two two cars caution is out it comes at lap five there you see them getting right and trying to bring them around the 31 car getting picked up Aston Alabama and that furry of saxenburg Pennsylvania the Learjet pilot Troy Beebe and the 9 car is also involved in Precor incident by where Neil Bonnett was talking about out of turn number two over you were saying earlier things just set a camera and isolator right on turn two and wait well you know if there's a place that's what happens probably gonna be there okay field is right and getting set here here we kept everybody straightened around here's the car spinning we picked him up the two other cars dented the third car that came through was lucky to get through the mess there they're giving one to go luckily right there the that car could have got stuck in that grants back there they got him exceptional year last year as they restart Headley will be first Jeff Burton Kenny Wallace announcer Darrell wall Chuck Bown here he's in the sixth position seventh is Alden Sawyer eighth Davey Allison ninth they learn our champion we've got the jacket drum set on pit road right now with a hood up in which he certainly didn't need the problem this early in the race but must be something pretty severe a star will duck in here and get a complete eight laps pace car is in and about to go a lap down number eleven the five time national champion Jack Ingram marks on pit road there's a real break down and there you see thank you did on the outside baby and your Cubs Earnhardt off on the inside of him in number three a voltage Chevrolet there three ernhardt 475 closes up on Elgin Sawyer to get to these short drugs like that Devi was going to make a move to go around the car in front of it you'd make it this fine but if you don't you drop back on Kenny Wallace's car number 36 looking strong out here michael waltrip in the yellow car taking just a bit higher line and staying right in front of his brother Darrell been converted over with his pushcart he's really and he won here last year remember we were delayed a few weeks there's Kenny Wallace directly in front of him as he did right here a year ago his Lee is running short tracks in these intermediate sized tracks four years of excellent gnarrk gnarrk I wish the cup car one time and the guy can really drive a race car he's got this thing dialed in right now veteran of many years area stain right in front of Jeff Burton buy three car lengths in the a family man 12 Melony 9 great racing family these guys are right even this only in this race they're going to be have to consider the fact here we go real deep back in the corner cars all over Houston in the numbers running in 2030 started 35th remember he started dead last and a year ago historian Grand National race we came all the way from the rear the start took him hot south the checkered flag Houston in the number six closes in Miller now Miller's number 52 on the outside the white of red car looks a little beaten up as you'll note around the hood that's because the hook blew up over the windshield actually put a crease in the roof of that car 96 trying to move in there is back out of Pennsylvania the highest finishing push grand national regular down as Daytona a week ago that number 96 take a provisional start today 34 that happen rip the roof off the dark it was in more serious I couldn't believe it was jimmy hensley almond 16 laps complete and building his advantage here comes number three bernard on the inside of walter perfect back with others block the Daytona 500 last victory was in Grand National racing just a week ago Earnhardt closes up another one and he moves up on the fourth position number 30 Michael Walter this deal runs are hard like this early was invented a little bit earlier these guys who have going to have to think about carrying those tire laughs sometimes you run them in the ground early there's nothing left over strong the towers will be only started at us kneel there you see the interval a yellow car is michael waltrip running fourth and the black number three ernhardt closing in not only is he running port again he's starting to try something there's a lot of God cabbages a outside line if you can ever get that car to work on me Michael won the races here by being able to do that either inside or out he's already playing around with that outside lane last lap Neil miles per hour on Hensley the leader go down to the jimmy hensley pitchers Ken Stabler yeah and I'm here with a crew team for Jimmy his lease number lemon bar bobby king bobby anticipation you wanted given the tower where we gonna set the pace right now everybody down here concerned about tire wear they give me his daily crew now look at this ruckus taking place his tires are wearing pretty well as he squeezes down to the bottom of Kenny Wallace they touch out there and turn to Earnhardt moving in a little bit of push to get him on to have a straightaway battle for third sometimes two motors go quicker than one but kind of like hooking another boater on the boat they're gonna try both up get a little show up down the straightaway you can get my wallet well it's just try three deep here I'm not sure does the work while is pinned on the outside and it's Earnhardt on the bottom ernhardt suits light down through thank you very much I'll take 30 sometimes the tag goes the runner this deal the tie goes to the guy on the inside he sort of got more real estate work with bobby labonte crawling back started third and he's rolling back to the field of 12 there's the that is the Dale Jarrett car and he's made a tremendous run in this race he picked up ten positions they'll has a crew that keeps his bush cars up separately and they this cars were always of threes one while races the Darlington in Rockingham and started in 19th position and he looks like he's Kaname he is officially 11th at the present time is bobby labonte gives us these pictures in lap number 25 30 laps down right now the top five brothers so far we've got Hensley Bert Earnhardt Michael Waltrip and Wallace early in the race thanks going well one change now we see Harry Gant just moving around Wallace and picking a spot for the man everybody is watching this man Jimmy Hensley staying up there that front running position completed 32 yet just went off the board and we started second spot right there is number 99 the Jeff Burton 31 laps are complete Jeff Burton running in second team putting a lap here on Steve Grissom 99 burton and set on the pole saw that interval the second there's third place that's number three earn hard and you get a sense of the interval back to him in our live coverage earnhardt who started ninth laughs here on Cecil unit well he was one of the cards this fund early he had an acceptable year last year won some races and started out throughout here a little bit of trouble here you see the number four car or the number thirty car that is running in fourth Michael Waltrip michael has just run so good at this bankers has been James he's certainly gonna be a factor for it's over he told me earlier he didn't have the cards just like he wanted a bit certainly got off very much and back in fifth is the number seven of gann now look at this still in trouble and backing up is the Wallace car on the outside Kenny Wallace is having a handful here just scratched out six position Kenny Wallace falling to seven so we have champion is Davey Allison in that number 28 men falling back Jarett up to ninth now and he's had a tremendous run spot here's Davey trying to get a lap traffic and there's Hensley also that's gonna be hard for these guys this track the inside was real protective and it takes a little bit time anytime they hold get just a little bit they start closing the gap but a little bit right now Davey Johnson out of Imperial Pennsylvania being lamb and I guess they really took heed to the instructions that the drivers meeting laughter a rec room beginning a week ago with one caution for three spinners up in turn number two we're now 37 laps deep into this 200 lap affair and we're not seen but that single caution on the board Resendez who had that great second-place finish at Nazareth Pennsylvania a year ago the Massachusetts driver number 79 being lapped by the leader they just stroll around around of here stays up and cry yep he is smooth he is easy and he should be as better than 20 years in gray change of positions here car number seven Harry Gant has moved around he's taken fourth Michael Waltrip who was on the fly he steps back one in the fifth position on car number 30 and Davey Allison States intended to pull this one out and I tell you what there's not a situation where the 30 car lost again has been coming through the veil he went Michael and his pulling away and really close to her or got up in front of in the corner so again is really on the move the other guys aren't all up very much 88 winner Harry Gant I mean up to traffic we watch these Busch races can't almost be other pictures right through the front here still Parsons I'm here with the Iron Man Jack Ingram drive this familiar number 11 what happened well currently having a liar do lien coming from at about four offenses we go to bed said the Diamondback but Bernie we'd already done the damage just started getting worse though we didn't stop forward any more damage to the motor Jack I want to tell you just for me personally you taught me an awful lot about racing for all of us we thank you for all the years we only hear you're right right there with that Jack Ingram has been around these tracks so many years and won the championship repeatedly and always a factor to win any races in name any tracks where Jack Ingram hasn't picked up a checker the problem Jack hand is something that a lot of people have to be concerned with when your temperature changes the way this I give the jig and the engine big chain post these guys can guess what gets to pudding in what time it was he's not looking you go far these motors up well meanwhile Jimmy Hensley sent to the patient's a good one as he laughs Jamie ovie the Vermont driver in the number forty-one Hensley has about a 10 to 12 car length advantage over the second place runner Jeff Burton an equal distance from Burton back to Earnhardt Gant seems to be the quickest car on the track as we're now seeing car number oh nine head on to pit road that's Dale Shaw out of New Hampshire he is getting some additional work on his car number 17 Jeff Burton's brother is also in there here's the man that's leading it all densely stained in the front running position building a little bit of a lead he's picking up a tenth of a second here or there there's some people like in gobbler once they get the lead it's hard to take it away from him here's Lee's race so long that he's not gonna give up that lead he's not gonna give up any position on the track if he Hardman to run down caution-free compared to a year ago or any of the past three years this one looks to be they've really thought it out pretty carefully dad talking about running somebody down there's the black bar early all right he'll be sleeping in the right it's really running over again in a hurry michael walker battle down here to turn three Davey Allison on the inside of Michael Waltrip the black number 28 Allison scoops down to the bottom and Stevie Allison Devi comes up as they go into turn number one maybe Alison trying to get over that problem and the great American race they don't hard feelings after race I know it's hard to get over 48 laps are thus far complete in the Richmond 200 live here on world sport standby hundred we're off to a great start Dale Earnhardt really making a run toward the front really doesn't mean he will wind up there talk to us some of the crew chiefs and some of these team they're really backing out some to save tires really concerned with that back to kids flyer and coach Neil Bonney okay we're under caution because the Todd Bodine spun and turn number two I don't think he picked up too much damage here it looked like he lost the car right in the middle of the corner above the type what we were talking about who luckily not be backed up right up to the wall without a lot of damage to the car rabbit's foot was working on that one rut where that corset if you see the black line about five foot down in front of it yeah that no-man's land above those black strips he got out a little bit to get up there get their crews second caution of the day front of the field looks like this Hensley stays in front pace car I think is about ready to turn him loose with Jeff Burton's second Dale Earnhardt third Harry Gant the fourth Davey Allison in fifth Michael Waltrip and six and how about Tommy Ellis is now finding himself in now getting to put it all back together again today started 14 is up to seven grand national champion big favorite favorite and grand national racing Tommy yellows big favorite to win phrases when he gets in it maybe get that thing closed they'll be tough with the days over not a big favor with a lot of other drivers well he taught me her heart he'll work you over good yeah but I mean the name of games racing either he you know thinks he's got a chance to get the brunt he's gonna blow the horn a little bit when he gets around that horn sounds a lot like a front fender well they're trying to put buffer zone little batteries don't work on the horn so you just want to blow the horn you just tap that level a little bit we have 54 laps complete coming up to complete 55 this time by lap cars are on the inside cars in the lead lap on the outside as we get for anymore the fast cars are on the bottom of the racetrack in the black they do that because what we're talking about the groove is give the best Chuck Bown has backed way up from his starting position they started working now out of the top 20 field away running once again here's our darts they're gonna know that or it hearts up the second kind of pacing herself damp with a little bit of heat on her heart they started closing the gap anyway that might be brothers cars a little bit harder they won't do this earth certain amount of rubber use whatever you use off then you can't get back later is like taking money out cars took that opportunity in the second question period Neal to work on him that's why he is so far back as we resume you're talking about the same tires all day get that fuel in there and then you got a lot longer to get yourself back stay out of trouble hence Leah's first ernhardt is closing and second for more on that story here's Bill Martin Cody erryday learner Tony there's a lot of talk about the tire wear there were the two fastest future right now so here for a while see what happens I think we got to take on right side I believe that way to go we're going Vail's got to be a hard daughter go down though everything brought his own race tires fell off by a half second me either thank you Tony and Earnhardt falls off of position as Jeff Burton works his way back in the second Earnhardt Falls the third Davey Allison on the inside of number seven right down to the bottom line that's Allison under Boudia brother under Harry Gant and getting him South fourth position Harry Gant Smith Michael Waltrip then six here's the bat third spot Earnhardt is there Davey Allison moves in this could get him racing hard we have this little nip and tuck and mostly nip here between Earnhardt and Alison actually continues to scoot away hoppin trying to catch it this car capable of winning this race I ran second here spraying around the it's good wanna race with rockingham so let's see what he'll do with it he's got a couple to run down right now and he has to worry about Davey Allison and meanwhile up in front Hensley is there but Jeff Burton has found add his life and closed within two cars the leader distant lapped 64 yeah it was pretty impressive restart right back around him so he's got a lot of cars that there you see hopefully in the 25 followed by Bernhard Nelson again like a wall subtraction turned four got one in the wall is head barrier whose tank the wall in turn number four it'll bring out the third caution and he wants it pretty good you can see the tire mark those black marks right side of the car right into the concrete and the right side of the car is where that because the concrete always wins so the third caution is out let's see if anybody's going to take this opportunity to hit pit road we'll hit a couple of commercial messages and be back live at Richmond in his third caution period a very quick caution and back underway it has given the lead now michael waltrip is in third out chants back to third their side and meanwhile up in front look at this twenty-eight wheeled away I took up part of the racetrack got to run to the breasts off that tight part of the corner but they pulled it off Harry Gant is in 4th and Dale Jarrett finds himself if running together among those cars that came on to pit road and took on fuel Burton maybe Johnson Pressley this is a perfect endeavor without around this racetrack as slick as it is on the outside they're giving each other plenty of run Neal do you think Davey Allison and Dale earnheardt have short memories you think they remember last Sunday it's Daytona Beach what happened about three laps ago bill you know like either you sometimes you don't forget things like that it's just orderly in the race - looks like number 99 Burton is taking the wal-mart kid that was running so well started on the pole and look at the damage on this one well after yellow fever breaking out there's your fourth caution of the day it comes at lap number 73 and involves the pole-sitter Burton now dragging car number 99 on the pit road and that was a brand spanking new race car that they just built after Daytona they got it Michael I've got it built here and that's the consequences do you pit early do you don't any way to work your back the front you got back in traffic here we'll see if we can pick the shot right here well he's already broken loose looked like he was on the outside of someone getting done in one and it's a tricky place right there the car takes all the car looked like it was barely rolling but you see it knocked that frontal area around and that's really supported with a lot of roll bars it takes a pretty good lick to do that damage the speed up was like easier but the car just takes a good shot the wall and he's out of it right now Jeff Burton trying to win his second Grand National race had a great start Phil Parsons is down there yeah we're done it'll crew is looking at the damage on Jeff Burton all right now pretty substantial down to the left front and probably busted the old crew let me see if I get a word in with Jeff yep started on the pole here looking for a good day what happened call drill loose on the first few laps after a bathroom caution and if the car just got away from it okay make any excuses there anybody I just love Jeff Burke he won a race last year he'll he'll win a lot more in his perfect Phil you know like I do that once you come out of the pits like I love to have more on that a brick you pick up that little bit of crash rubbers doubly slung down off the racetrack and he might have got into some of that a little buildup on the tires and takes a left here to get it cleaned off and evidently got the problem with it Jeff Burton who had done such an outstanding job at Orange County Speedway down on Rosemont North Carolina great back in 88 87 having trouble here at Richmond today Jack Ingram down there with Mike joy in the pram communication centers we get ready to go green he's won a lot of these races Ken what do you think that Jimmy Hensley make the right move by stopping and gassing up to go the distance do you think Earnhardt and Davey Allison well out in front of what potential trouble or in the right spot right now well Jimmy probably done the right thing under some certain circumstances but it's a possibility that they'll only be two or three cars or four or five left in the same left whatever her heart decides to hit the gas for the leaders and they Jimmy wouldn't have that much of an amazing let's go back to green like lies are in our first ad Allison second third fourth Derick Ben Kenny Wallace in six seventh is Bobby Labonte eight does Darrell Waltrip ninth Morgan Shepherd nemecheck is it Jen running 12 is Chuck Bown and thirteenth is compact well Davey's car seems to be real strong with the restart get you the indication or North cars might be a little bit tight Chevy now the outside Davey's cars loosen up and stick that nose under if ever down and we just so love it that's cars doing a great job of getting this race going again the longest we've been under cautions been three laps for these spins the pizza war to see what they do with they're trying to put the wristbands the show with the phones of racetrack so more we self-intro the better shows government here we are in the back straightaway with Earnhardt leading Davey Allison in second three and twenty-eight first and second respectively and closing up again Michael Waltrip last year's winner with them Jerry on the inside but still got you working at a music to get up off that corner without spinning those wheels right there right there in the yellow car any outside running now oh they got a lap carnie inside they pinned Gandy have to step off the throttle just a bit came in handy doing this one going around the lead Davey Allison the outside it's live on world sports from Richmond International Raceway Earnhardt and Allyson at it again watch a Dale's car makes a good move ahead outside the wheels will fit right there on the inside here's Alison going back to the lead michael waltrip when the catbird seat watching all of this just behind now you see the thirty Waltrip move in coming around and complete eighty this time now look at the fifth place car that's the number thirty-two just behind the seventh is Dale Jarrett and he's made a magnificent run that's Warren is right here comes get on the the seven around the thirty high side outside of the hardside but it worked these cars are packed like this coming from Daytona the draft was instrumental right here it doesn't mean a thing you got a handle even though they're lined up it's not helping one bit they've got to carry this F then attract the hamlets what like this place now the car back in fifth working behind the yellow car is Dale Jarrett and he's ready to do some challenging among those top runners here comes Davey again he's gonna trap one more time there's Dale Jarrett your debt battle for the lead like and guess what here comes here even those rpms up these these sixes Grand National Park honor at 3,200 pounds rather than 3,500 without exhilarate of the eight on this racetrack and when you get one park down the inside of her the hut set up when they get a broiler just was for Earnhardt as he pulls around Barney MacRay pulls out in front of Davey Allison in second Gant in third and maintaining board like a wall right there in fifth eighty-four complete and I tell you what though I think every for a lot of rays man that's hard I wanted to make that decision myself but it was a medical decision I certainly miss it but I'll tell you what here comes gents out of the inside and car number seven it wouldn't look who comes up and puffing up the steps their staplers back in shape he's ready to play football he made it up top it's good to be up there with you guys you got sick of being out there in the cold you Alabama guys just can't stand the cold but then get some more coaching from Coach Bonnie I think you need coaching man he's looking for coach - now he's picked up well he had us back straightaway there you see the top three here comes a the Allison down the inside six that Chevy snows in there as they come around a complete lap 88 this time on the inside it's Alison on the outside iron art the amp looked them over on the high side and just behind michael waltrip looks strong as Dale Jarrett in them but day what's supposed to happen here but I'm not two cars like this run this hard get those tires heated up a little too much should it be the huh face of the whole when he guys get some stuff hot he should be able to drive around the Manatee laps we'll make a dummy out of me go ahead pencil Mary so I look like I know what I'm talking to just what he's doing taking second spot on the high side door could be possibly can right the three-car with Earnhardt tires on it we have to make the move quick to get on around if he can do it he's got doing the next lap reduce or you'll get those tires through there come on everybody generally what I was talking about there but if everybody think you look good that's abusing the tires but Earnhardt and Davy were running together so let me try the downside Lane at me oh here comes the horn top three together just rubbing fenders on this three quarter mile track average speed last lap 118 miles an hour Earnhardt back on the inside bronzed ant hard they touch once touched white most dead even give it to Earnhardt as they go back into widen here Gary leaning on it and they got baked hours they've worked better before okay here goes the two guys to me and look who's right down to the bottom yes indeed Davey Allison to the Alabama gang right there on the bottom of the racetrack Dale Jarrett and let's not forget in six that Jim car camera Bobby Labonte Bobby Labonte who fell back to 12th has pulled himself back to six after that pit stop period and is looking good for Carlos spin on Tommy Huston the kid that started dead last in 36th position and it worked his way all the way to eight races applying dirt second and third Tommy Houston they're still talking about last year when he started 28 then we got a wreck up and turn number three one loopy at one cart crashing to the bottle racetrack into the barrier just at the entrance of pit road Jeff Gordon the USAC champion 19 years old there you see there's the one car coming around Mississauga and Elton Sawyer in trouble here's Elton's car back underway some kind of liquid in that corner we had a car the 31 car was who Grissom was really smoking alright we're under caution it's the fifth caution of the day we're working lap number 95 Earnhardt's in front and we'll be back with more of the action from Richmond in a moment right now I'm up in the booth with my mid tours for this thing I'm going to field with coaching the O bonnet and Ken Squier we've had a couple of incidents on the track first of all we had Tommy Houston he started last worked his way up to hate as Neel said looks like he ran into something a liquid or some type on the track is fun then we had a second incident that involved Jeff Gordon and Elton Sawyer and we're under caution right now for that reason guys let's take a look at what those incidents first what happened out here to Houston in the car number six the car broke loose couldn't get enough off the corner right there but I thought I saw cargo previously and put a little bit of liquid down because right after this we had some old cars get loose in the same place the car turned around too quick he was down in the line where he needed to be he wasn't in the wrong place on the racetrack so something for caused the problem you know it's taper he should get the record for most times around out here today triple spin on car number six like Neil's there's like stuff it's thick you know the correct line running where he needed to be here's the other incident we see right here coming around the bottom looks like in turn four it's gonna involve G up Gordon the youngest driver there's Jeff right there swapping in hitting the end of pit wall and then Elton Sawyer's gonna come into this somewhere along the line there he is up at the top of your screen sucks coming in backwards well thank goodness Kenny did they put those barricades up here that's barrels full filled with sand or he had I had a pretty good shot right in the pit wall let's go to Mike joy at the Brampton Communication Center feeling all at the Finch safety barrier and it was designed by John Fitch famous sports car racer and also an inventor Jeff Burton was the pole sitter for this event and now he's sitting on our hot seat instead out there where he'd like to be tough break out here but tell me where are you folks planning to go the distance on tires tires the big question here today yeah we were gonna go the distance on tires Rick you did a real good job designed in real time I had no problem going away this we had only lost about four tenths of a second home speed by the time we pitted so we were we're ready to go the whole way a lot of folks could have blamed something anything else for that spin takes a big guy to climb out of the car and say I goofed well if you lie about it yourself that you don't believe it so you know I was in the groove I was trying hard got it you just got away from a real good race car the armor Food Lion Chevrolet was really running good a Chevy motor in and which surprised a lot of people okay Jeff Burton had a good run here at the start he'll have some more go back upstairs so the end of the wall does not collect the cars and those barrels design do their job International Raceway and there's Earnhardt we've now completed three laps under green last caution period and Wallace is back in the lead lap t leader is Earnhardt in the three Davey Allison run second pulls up into the third position and now we see the leader number three coming in make a green flag stop for fuel and fire let's go to Phil Parsons I'm completer Taylor he told us earlier I think Dale actually wanted to pitch the lap before but when Kenny Wallace got on the inside of him got a scuff mark on the left front worked it looks like you got in the air again he killed the rest boy in a crash down in turn number two gannets Sawyer in the 27 for the second time around the 17 of darrell waltrip get lucky mean yet been here on the racetrack also on pit road we have seen Davey Allison is your leader and Bobby Labonte showed third we also had can't come down pit road here I think that was a gamble right there again he saw the car spinning morning - you almost get a preview we repeated the cost before it came out but they never did throw the caution the car got crank to pull off we got Gant and Earnhardt pitted on marine into the first one a year 14 into 10 seconds coming up through the gears and he was slow on the restarted to be in trouble here Neal and that was were Michael also mailed in knocked him down as wanna do Dale Jarrett buy him at the same time he did lose the load so I hit up so he lost a lot of time so the leader in the race continues to be number 28 Davey Allison Lee stops under green here you see the seven the car number 28 as your leader tensley running the second spot Bobby Labonte in third Tom Peck now fourth Chuck Bown into fifth recall that he has made his pit stop and joe nemecheck that outstanding freshman from a year ago no sophomore jinx on him he's showing fifth position putting a lap on Jeff Gordon the Arkansas Kida 116 races last year for United States Auto Club and won the championship and remember that kid in number one is only 19 years of age you're going to hear a lot about him he won for sprint car races he's a comer boys done a great job he's that been in these cars very long really from we've got some action in the ditch the car running hot the only thing hotter in Richmond Virginia but Davey right now is got control of this thing the question is the gods up it again Earnhardt with a new tires Kenny run Davey dealt with him said they're leaving race like this jimmy hensley up in the second position Davey Allison how do you win one of these 200 lap sprint events the Grand National race is just staying out of trouble all day you see a lot of accidents here first time the Grand National guys raced on a short track with the radial tires that could create some problems so I say the big thing you have to do is pick the right time and to stay out of trouble here you see Davey Allison stayin right on it okay what you know the strategy was going shift around here lady decided to stay out a lot easier in that car but the guys that pitted are starting to close in on it but if the caution comes out that he's Jeff right once again they're going to get around debut right here before the caution comes out the perfect line the correspondent the other thing he wants to do and what it's doing that you know here's the situation we're half way 114 laps have been completed this afternoon Allisyn staying up in front can't slay the early leader earn three guys whose names have been up and now we see Chuck Bown city for a second time that doesn't look good for the defending Grand National Champion meanwhile Davey stays in front but he's done a lot more trip on the right rear down just getting there he goes he's away 22 and 510 seconds unofficial time and he comes out Davey Allison has this race pretty much his own way for the moment guitars would think it was smoke that is worth never check Houston even after that spinach shown he's hanging in there the court was really good he's evil drive it over all the way through and back out again this was funded by the the pit strategy I like so far Jimmy Hensley that early stop just for fuel counting on the fact there'd be more cautions early in the race Davey Allison he'll be able to go the distance interesting point about Hensley's car he's one of eight unn sponsored cars in the race the car looks cool too clean and no money coming in this series is such a great draw for fans folks watching it's really surprising that many cars are out here without some kind of fun here's dance trying to get back in our laps and here's the battle it's 30 and 32 flipping it down in there is Michael Walter and right with him the 32 cars we've got one going away on the back straightaway cloud of smog down on the inside and the car number 59 bring out the headers black flag is up but no caution on the track now they always are TRAI thing up in the turn not thing the leaders trying to get back to the line we go back and just what her hand now they've got ahold of their they're stuck so 121 laps are complete Presley's engine brings out the sixth caution of the day here in our live coverage of the Richmond 200 Russian right now for the lost engine that virtually closed the racetrack up visibility wise Jen Stabler Ken Squier myself they'll bond it we're fixing to go back green right now and as we get ready to go back under green guess who the leader is it's Jimmy Hensley's car number 25 with all these pit stops and he's sandwich back there behind laughs rubbin on the outside dance tryin to get his lap back in Garner in comes Michael Waltrip they came back to that we had what we're seeing right now we're seeing Barnhart again on the tail end of the lead well too much that is Davey Allison in the middle of it ooh that one for Davey Resendez is in there you see the 19 car Cecil units have that much in them as wire team and that's the result the 96 tech thunders into the wall hard on the outside comes back into traffic and there you see the collection as here goes to Dan thinner torque get their left back trot down here they come off the fourth terms if we pick up what happened looks like these two cars just touched right there coming up off corner guy got up in the under Darrell Waltrip Waltrip turns around car goes the outside Walton visibility's a problem and start stacking them up nowhere to go a couple of hard liquor out there in the middle of the racetrack Tom Peck was in the blue car on the inside and he socks the wall hard tearing up car number 96 the rest the Machinery's moved away look at it again just as you get into number four just barely kept darryl enough to get him turned around then turn to 96 you see it out at the outside wall a straight shot in comes back out right in the pan everybody's already stacking up and brakes don't do any good at this time Davi took a little shot beside that looked like a damaged the car that much Ken one of the thing is gonna be tough if you look right through on the racetrack there jump playing everywhere and all these cars are having to run over okay now nope it's on the caution flat tires a big question I'm surprised he doesn't bring the cars down pit road as we've seen some other times any of that much junk on the track you know you're gambling on tires and you could caught up to up all those tires here's Peck climbing out of car number 96 Peck was running in the fifth position at the time he crashed he was the highest finishing Busch grand national regular just a week ago at Daytona and had to take a provisional start at 34th position Tomczak clambering out of car number 34 guy knows a little bit about short track racing kenny will talk with you in just a minute about this right now we're going to take this commercial break and then back to Richmond once again I have a Richmond International Raceway that working lap 129 under caution after the most serious incident of the day from which everyone walked away Tom texts are the most seriously torn up front and back they're taking to Records to get car number 96 collected and out of the port burn area look again at what happened out here and this event triggered Jenny you called a lot of plays was this one right here yes the bump and run type play as we talked about Neal but you see he just gets into the back of Darrell and get them spin it around he collects the wall and then in the back everybody just starts grabbing for grass so to speak hang on try to get through that do that without any trouble some do some don't a real break for Gant and Dale Earnhardt seems like somebody's misfortune Tilly guys dogs nose laughs and it's gonna happen this time the cars that sitting in the middle of racetrack is ready for the junkyard right now another replay here another interpretation of what happened I've been for we can pick it on a long shot here there already turned around you see everybody diving to the inside but your honor will be run on a racetrack because you can't stack on the six across there and then head to the grass guys got in the grass made it through there okay that's what you need Toro for a sponsor but snow tires one here's my joy at the Krampus communication center and I'm with Tommy Ellis former Busch grand national champion you just saw the replay your reaction to this that track looks like it gets very very narrow when things happen really the corner down hands off in there and it really pinches it caught tight so you got to be able to give and take down answer real give-and-take Conan know if you're not willing to do that you're gonna have problems all the time strategy for this race would you have stopped early or would you have waited and ended up in the back when that freaking well I did stop early not by choice not no I mean I really we had already pitted laughs we we did right what we wanted to do I think it the Polaroid Land Camera Buick was running really good I thought Jimmy Hensley and myself had the best to cause that weed I was taking care of my tires and came right to the front and we would set the pace we wanted to set and when we paid it Jimmy pitted and I paid at the same time for you we were right back up front and you know Jimmy's in front now when they all the leaders pit he's gonna be there he's running awful good his costs working good and the Polaroid clean camera Buick was working really good but we had a heating problem when Jim and I started back through the pack we were as good as he was and if not a little better and they call was working super but it just pulled of heat and we finally had to pit okay Tommy Ellis out of the race Jimmy Hensley though may have a winning strategy we'll find out when we come back to Richmond International Raceway after this we're back with 135 laps complete here at Richmond cleanup work has been completed in turn number four getting set on a restart after a five car pileup that wiped out hope of winning in the second Grand National race in this for million dollar 1991 stock car series here at Richmond International Raceway Jimmy Hensley is currently your leader number 25 after these pit stops caution periods joe nemecheck finds himself in second Chicago Illinois Bobby daughter is in third Kenny Wallace is in fourth and Bobby Labonte winds up the top five that was with 135 complete they've just knocked down another lap 136 no change among those top five going further back in the sixth position then would be Davey Allison as we look out here over this three quarter mile track Dale Earnhardt is seventh Harry Gant is an eighth Michael Waltrip at ninth and in 10th is Dale Jarrett those cars are all one lap down in eleventh is Morgan Shepherd with a 12th spot Davey Johnson chilly day no frostbite for get a little heat in there one lap to green and that lead car there you see him Hensley and the Don Beverley to drag racers car come off the line like a drag racer thus far Neil Bonnett so pace cars about to bring the Vette laughs car slower cars on the outside the leader down on the point Jimmy Hensley nemecheck right behind him then comes daughter and 3rd squaring off for another scramble here at Richmond all was a dandy race and Jimmy Hensley right now has it his way issue is can he stay there and what's going to happen when car number 28 Davey Allison Dale Earnhardt in the free car Harry Gant and a seven start to roll from six seventh and eighth respectively here come the leaders here's the break thirty-eight complete of 200 left and they're three wide into the corner and the 87 getting the jump the white car going out in front for the first time today that's the fourth different leader that we've had in this bath in Richmond position kind of racing they like heavy traffic dammit and slamming out there here you see Earnhardt in that pretty car behind 44 ernhardt tries to shoulder beneath them here so long on the inside and turn poor makes that move we'll be right back in the picture with our these two guys have two new right-side tires on freshmen of those cars you see Waltrip's number 17 being shown a lap down today how smoothly family living if I can run out of the day this place is Bernhard in Legree our number two Ricky Craven out of Concord New Hampshire in the back straightaway and here they are closing up on 87 M nemecheck in for now falls the fifth there's the leader that's hard 425 Ashley and look at Kenny Wallace I'm ready to swear off and run with him look at this struggle up in front here's Kenny Wallace leader of the day in that group found rotting a lap down he's shown 14th on the beer 63 the red-and-white Nescafe car is a left down believers leading thirty-six young Kenny Wallace out of Missouri Hensley having to settle in second anyone here how about this for third spot there's Davey Allison on the outside or an art on the inside and Gant right there if we seen these three cars replay all over again just thinking about it Kenny Wallace with Steve Grissom last year and he won for the first time in history you won four races last year he went with Kenny Wallace and gave me almost one bar before I ran outta gas with two laps to go which a loudspeaker and here he is leading the race again Seaford must know what he's doing about these bush ground edge that is the truth gran Nacional mechanics here comes number seven top the inside yant looking good up in front Wallace there Hensley now look at this battle further back into the picture again earlier on today car in the earned her car put on tires Devi pitted on the Cosman they got gas only the other cars on better rubber that's going up right now back straightaway number three challenged by number seven Earnhardt challenged by Gant battle for third turn three into for Gant bottom side permanently there we go no such thing as permanent of the checkers write it up in the newspaper these are the two guys while ago that rubbed all the right now beside each other's cars they got bottle of his cleaners these cars but the drivers don't mind at all what the bands want to say when you're out there I don't like to rub it a little bit myself here you see Waltrip in the 17 remember he's a lap down locked back from card number 28 glam baccala racetrack with incomes younger brother Michael 6-4 michael waltrip he is been six yes six position and running in the lead lap and there you see Davey Allison that fights been going on back and forth between those two crews here little bit quicker service sometimes they took advantage of that and here comes baby down pit road Davey Allison hitting at lap 152 maybe Alison on good tires on take a lap here it didn't take long to see for Devi to see the fact again in her heart were so much stronger than fresh tires down the left right now the puzzle you know neither if people they can 19 and for 10 seconds up on the clock here comes Harry gondola number seven down to the inside of Hensley and they go into turn three and here comes Earnhardt maybe as winner of with a new pit procedure connectors all shake it out and look like the thing to do is run along coming there late get your toothbrush start the guy certainly Dominic right now guineas don't have his work cut out the hole does a year ago though they said boy you should they see a second get me back now three altogether 200 laps complete it's kinky Wallace his own older tires no doubt but you gotta try to make those guys use theirs up they got fish to represent don't let here's gab for the league there again goes in the first Kenny Wallace did put cars over lap 77 this one reason he probably Hensley cars well as they did so these three guys are pretty evil right now except for this look at right down and becomes the six different driver to leave here comes Earnhardt heartbreaking to move garden three car I've been erasing left cars now on the lead lap there and he builds an 8 bar link advantage michael waltrip with Dale Jarrett is sick Labonte seventh demodex back to eighth Bobby daughter nine Morgan Shepherd in the lead lap intense you made impress approval do hard slap table fit right up in the middle of corner maybe a little bit of pushing his car Mary it's really stuck right at the bottom it's waiting breezy doesn't get away just a little bit that's all say they dare run time read that little thing right up there and just leave it I think one thing he really likes is that fresh air would you leave the race better treated there's the tenth place car that's Morgan Shepherd in the car number 97 he is staying on the tail end of the lead lap lacerations on pit road Jamie Obie comes in battle developing up in front again three in the 36 go at it on the outside here comes Earnhardt he's making a run my parents all day long let's jump down to the pit food bill force see what he tell us about the tire situation we're down here with the two right-side tires here again took off on his pit stop here at about a hundred and ten laps Goodyear measured the tires inshore from two and three quarters three and a half thirty seconds they come with above five knew he ran over half the races they weren't quite half wore out no problem here guys well the good news is there was rubber left on but the problem when you get down to that last 30 seconds top part of the have to worry about having good tires over here's the battle for second place they've been running side by side a lap after lap thank you all day go to the two car lengths meanwhile guess what closing up michael waltrip or here's the all eight in trouble coming down pit road Bobby daughter may be insane out there look at this fight continue really dishes after his caution coming out right now yellow is on the track I wonder spilling something out of the Oh a car it is now on pit road race back down into the first turn Kenny Wallace Justin clutch of Earnhardt as they came across and there you see the seven Harry Gant your leader this caution at lap 166 ken will bring up to date on the tire war and it isn't much of a battle today of a seventh riders vivia unis are still running which Miller ran at the top 15 the first half of the race but his car now behind the wall Dave Rezendes involved in a wreck about to go back onto the track on Hoosiers none of those accidents were tire related however so this round of the grand national series tire war appears as if it will go to goodyear they to put on your high-heeled galoshes and go strutting out here if you like Harry Gant Kenny walls Dale Earnhardt on those top three positions and now that they tighten them all up Oregon's Shepherds car on the tail end of that lead lap could become a factor as we have 167 the 200 laps complete Morgan is working with that forward and they're trying to get that engine Bell development going to get it working good he's staying right there with only a couple of Fords in this race and the 36 prior starting field so 167 working lap 168 at the present time Harry Gant's race to win for the second time will he do it stay with us you'll see it live here from world sports now back at the original 200 having a wonderful time the show is exactly what it's been bill to be it's very very exciting wheel to wheel fender to fender NASCAR racing great family photo between Harry Gant Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace in the thing brother Kinney was extremely well having a great time heck you guys okay Kent Stabler and down in turn number one the feel this organizing light comes off on the face car I think they're ready to kick this one off again as we see car number seven Gant in first and second is Wallace third as they learn our narrows leaders up in front one through five Michael Waltrip Dale Jarrett maintaining fifth going sixes Hensley seventh Bobby Labonte eighth nemecheck ninth is Morgan Shepherd go to nine cars Ali left Harry Gant up in front as they come down to the line man out there is Kenny Wallace in the third spot is Dale Earnhardt I'm here with Chris carrier here against coochie does she seem to have a bit of a problem with the car what is it yeah so far everything's been working good but right before that caution water keeps me whenever I dab it around a couple laps we go here we might be on the edge of burning a piston or something like that it's just hard to tell they just went up real quick right before the caution my husband hangs in there comes gogledd at Handy pantry thank you Chris I was looking at Harry's cards you can't buy the president the track was so cold this morning the temperature goes outside it looked like they got the bottom area the grill taped up they might be wishing I think was not done right yeah and his lead is diminished laughs car Chuck Bown moving back in never found his one lap down that number 63 car there's the leader can to the number seven and there is down in the 63 just behind and you see pictures from car number 70 in seventh position at Bobby Labonte car 44 and diving down again now it's the other way around as the accordion stretches out and car number seven again there you see that 36 and 3 behind the two lap cars there's walls second and third right behind Darrell Waltrip in the number 17 Darrell is 11th on the field the 11 they ever left out here's your second and third place battle we'll get around Darryl because it's holding up just enough that aren't 22 laps remain 22 to go leader Gant and second place war here John real tight by this wall you can see the wall real closer up there get up over there our wheels above the attention controls pulled off the freeway would you do something like that kid he kind of he burnt those tires and just we literally hurt up a little bit you'll have to avoid a lap to get up there clothes try to cool em down you go back up there my Corrado they see the yellow car on the bottom that is Michael Waltrip he's running in fourth the 28th Davey Allison behind him is now a lap down there's Davey on the outside and he is being shown in 12th whenever you have found intent car is 11 then you have the 28 car Davey Allison in 12 they're running a lap down having their own little war here's the 25 car Jimmy Hensley he's being challenged by Bobby Labonte in 44 Hensley is running the sixth position Bobby Labonte comes to the bottom of the track finds himself some room there why do you wrong and with him comes Morgan Shepherd shepherd is there in the 97 just behind these two now look at this look at this resection place Neal boy they've been going at it for a couple of laps they're working their play if that's what it is the Rusty Wallace car being driven by Kenny Wallace not being intimidated one itty bitty bit by the Intimidator people right here right here's where you got to do it oh well in reserve run for Kenny Wallace what do you think of that one Kent State yeah it's a great racing you watch this side too racy that's what you go to get the best part you always need to see number three up there beggin fenders with people there's Davey Allison very outspoken during the course of the week about wanting to run very very close to our North where she's got a car running what was the All Pro Series now pardon estar two years he has been in grief in 22 raises return small traction rolling so to speak around the country in the south at Missouri goes demeaning to a lot of fun to be around this board I've enjoyed so much it correlates so much to football with the team working that sort of thing and it's very enjoyable and maybe we get a chance to talk to a little bit more about that it is progressive we're down to 15 laps to go to and the second-place battle there you see Wallace and he is shining this afternoon he and Earnhardt have had themselves a war and both of them coming out with medals what a great run these two are making here's your leader again in the number 7 performing just so well in this car looks like he could be on his way to a second win in the Richmond 200 Daytona he never got the car run it just left you wanting to which is unusual Harry's usually strong with a bigger car on a big track but they certainly make it up more right here and look at that log jam further back 28 and 17 working each other over if that is the battle going on 4:11 spot give it to Davey Allison for the ball Darrell Waltrip in the 17 Michael Waltrip in the 30 saves in port than its heavy traffic everywhere actually I'm a bit back for that on the way out after all day but folks are used to it in Richmond we have a great product see the 28th the 17 still side-by-side at the 11th place doesn't get any better than that all the way to the fields you see this kind of racing in for the moment let's focus on Davey Allison battling Darrell Waltrip and seven Davey Allison and Daryl Walter who's battling for position Harry and I just talked his crew chief Chris carrier he said that hearing has not said anything about the water temperature on the radio he says with the stopwatch says it's doing okay left it's gonna have to run hard to hurry you back here for second spot for a moment looked like Earnhardt had Wallace covered called almost completely in front of him yeah but now they swapped position let's see if he could get up off the corner him our dark cars Lulu's brought here as knocked off he is critical when they get over to secretary Judy could take that jump off the corner he's going ahead the outside has been a place to be evolved that can place at stake right here's where we'll see Barnard has that advantage militant that seems to be the critical place of the track you got those two soldiers missing off those Injuns you can't up down the little six or they don't wind up cylinders although sweat when they tell me was going 600 erasing years ago really light them up a track like this they respond so well and give you such a great show further back Dale Jarrett is wheeled around Michael Waltrip and we watch this struggle now you see the 30 now 30 pack around again here's why and Dale Jarrett that fight goes back and forth between 30 and 32 they swap it back about every other lap Michael Waltrip in car number 30 new sponsorship this year for his grand national effort for his they put a lap on Jamie Obi three Congress you're these pair this pair dirty insert now back huffin had second place war Wallace to the inside Earnhardt on the outside Wallace taking a little higher line trying to keep those rpms up in to and you'll take a shot down here in three see if he can just crowd underneath Davey Allison being shown in eleventh one lap down 195 complete five to go giving that in keep that outside there's your relationship from first back to second place good idea more they're positioned around the track and his old friend Waltrip in the 17 that's the fight for 11 spot you know cancel my my stable wine is Davey sticking his nose up there in the second place babble he's racing Walter if he just stays home for those two he could get past for his position he's been forced into deal where he's got to go on oh they're packing take a look just behind them here they come 32 and 31 again Dale Jarrett's there he pulled up Michael walked it back to fifth getting down at the end of this with white flag and here's your battle for second place Kenny Wallace Steve's down the bottle racetrack cries - holder on the outside white flag is now this is the battle for second gam no contest no yeah it is going home second place is that you as they come out of turn number two here comes Harry Gant down - winded number seven he has done a walk away but the battle right to the line Dale earnheardt by a whisper over Kenny Wallace Dale Jarrett was finishing fourth michael waltrip in fifth spot tsilya winner is Harry Gant and car number 7 for the second time in his career he's won the Richmond 200 you'll need even just a moment say in victory lane can pretty much rest assured you'll get when you come to Richmond for Grand National for Winston Cup Modifieds whatever it is this track really makes for competition and when this one was over Harry Gant was the man in victory lane car number 7 51 years old grandfather he's sure drove like a kid out there today as he busted through this field let's go to Phil Parsons with the champion with practice we caught a parent set the car up and we practice we didn't change anything and even though we wasn't as quick as some cars in practice we this lamp did call it was good and that when the race started to scope in and do come he just hooked up super I didn't really try to race anybody talk our line is so strong it was good I just tried to save the tires take it easy they come time to run after the halfway we ran well in all of a sudden 30-some laps to go this running hot on the peg and I tried to ease up and he I tried to take the lead so I could not run as hard and that helped a little bit but it the lice laugh I didn't think it's gonna make it but there's only half throttle device bobbing laughs I'll burn a piston here it looked like it was smoking on the cool off laughing it was smoking pretty good stinking the car real bad but car does handle super and he had a lot of fire and I just played today had a good time with Davey and Michael and learn are there I find you I could go where they come down to go I could smoke them well you know Harry's the crafty old veteran Neil you breaks it with him a long time he can he can get it done as good as anybody on the racetrack seems like anytime Harry he just like he said he want to go he had it under him he showed it in her ear at the end the race but looks like it looks like the broad that cars taped up real good that might read part of it dad it was tape job get her just a small hole out there that that car could breathe through by two seconds 2.0 two seconds Harry Gant was victorious and won his 14th race of his grand national career that's his fourteenth win that would tie him with Earnhardt of all people with 14 wins just in front of them with 15 as Morgan Shepherd and both Dale Earnhardt and Harry Gant have intention doing a lot more Grand National racing this year yeah you know Ken there's a possibility there you know Harry is the oldest winner and Winston Cup racing and he might very well be the oldest winner inquisitor's now I understand what means most to Harry Gant is finishing in front of Michael Waltrip so he doesn't get rest about being too old to be out there and boy this is a day for him he's gonna go looking for Michael Waltrip to ask the kid where he finished it more than likely he'll hobble more than ever let's go to Mike joy I'm with a fellow who probably knows more than anybody on this pit road about setting these cars up making them run Steve Byrd who is now the crew chief for Kenny Wallace and he folks almost nipped him today and what a great battle he and Dale Earnhardt had in the closing laps yeah we're a little tight today too tight but we kind of played a cautious Dale and Kenny are real good friends and they just had a ball and hey I think we're in a point lead now and that's not main concern what is it you've learned about these cars that nobody else seems to quite have a handle on that you can come up and just put somebody either right up in front and qualifying but more importantly make them run at the front all day well I don't know I've been with some awful good teams you know with Rob and then Steve Grissom is super driver and Kenny they're both they're all great drivers then they just think it will help to get things organized and and with my help and what they know it's coming together real good I remember when he started in New England Ken for Peterffy and Dhaka on the short tracks the garage was dirt he opened to the sky and the motor room was a big oak tree in the backyard and the Winston Cup Series a suitcase Jake elder maybe this series has backpack birdie because wherever he goes guys run up front they did a great job today I don't think he wanted you to tell that story at all Michael about those early days up in Connecticut there's no question the true value master mechanic award is Steve bird that true value master mechanic does not much question away that he puts cars together no I mean by that statement Busch grand national series you might seem over Winston Cup before long let's meet the man who came in second today here with Dale Earnhardt Dale it was a good race Harry said in victory lane did he had an awful lot of fun with you and Davey and Michael race and pretty much fun for you too well it was it was a good race men Kenny Wallace got the race in there and Harry got away from it I think I'm out of control with her a little bit but I don't know whether I had enough to pass him but my car was a little loose if it had been a little tighter I maybe could have done something with Harry but he was too strong there after me and Kenny got the racing it was just you know we're just doing what we could do to get beat each other that was a good race between Ken and I we had a good time I think Kenny looked awfully impressive out there didn't you Dale well the daddy is real smooth and you know he gave me plenty run the race and I tried to give inflating room is a good race between us Thank You Dale Neil this is Neil buy tell Dale their recent don't be on if you don't win these races he walked away he's gonna talk to Michael Walter about how how he liked racing too all right we'll be back with more from Richmond International Raceway and chat with Ken stapler in just a moment it's all Harry Jam checkered flag day for the veteran from North Carolina and back at Richmond International Raceway with a completion of the Richmond 200 Harry Gant victorious today up here topside with Neil Bonnett and Ken Stabler I'm Ken Squier let's talk about who we liked out here today in this race Ken Stabler anybody really stand out as far as you were concerned besides Harry Gant the winner in that great battle for second spot you expect this big ant Earnhardt and those guys up there but you get Kenny Wallace he stayed out of trouble and ran very consistent and finishes up high joe nemecheck we see him we see him on the all-pro series that we race very consistent driver I guess Rookie of the Year in this series last year only his second year he runs ninth and I was impressed with him always have been how about you Neal well I've just let you know I like to see race in a guy win the race and everybody else I enjoyed it and not be upset with what goes on you know the guys get out of the car they walk around they joke about having a good time when you see Davey Allison and Darrell Waltrip Racing for 11th place like they're racing for the win they're having a good time out there and it's good for the fans to see the racing all the way back through the field the pit procedure came in and I thought this was a replay of what we saw at Daytona one year ago almost the same kind of situation today gentlemen first part of the race was interesting and exciting second part was confusing dynamite finish I think we're still playing with it I think that crews are still playing with what they need to do to be in the right place at the right time at the end of one of these races I think today was a good good gauge for these guys they need to run a long ways put some fresh tires on Midway and have some rubber left on that car at the end of the race I think as they go along you see them fine-tune the pit road procedure and you're also gonna see the crews fine-tune their their strategy what its gonna take to win these races Neal Phil Parsons is standing by with another outstanding young new talent in NASCAR and let's go down right now and meet Kenny Wallace Kenny we heard from the teacher a little while ago he said he talked to you this week and said that he just told you to call and kind of helped you a little bit it must have worked well you know first of all bill use a race car driver you know how important the team is I want to give muster credit to Steve Burt my new crew chief and all my guys did it's all on how good the team is but Dale Earnhardt's been pitted next to me all week and I'm kind of a hyper person always have been and when I come to write on a Thursday or Friday I'm ready to race now it's hard for me to sit around two days and I paced the pits and dales been telling me to calm down but you know don't be so nervous so I'm we're getting with about 20 to go there and I'm leading it and I look behind I said man I'm not gonna let him intimidate me Harry's car was just strong and he got by me and me and Dale just had a good race my car was working halfway decent and Dale was a little loose I was a little pushed and we were fighting for positions is that is that fair for him to tell you to calm down and then you have to race him the last 25 laps of the race he messed up I'm gonna race him good night now it was fun a lot of fun terrific Ronnie Kenny thank you very much hey Phil did did dale say anything to him after that race i don't know if he did or not ken we were interviewing her again in victory lane when we got down here they'd already separate i'm sure we had a little talk with him i bet he did too i want to get a word for Kenny he's probably promised that don't get so close to me is what he probably think there were eight cautions for a 37 laps in this one which is not a record but what a great day for young Kenny Wallace as he battles Dale Earnhardt wheel-to-wheel for the last 30 laps of competition that's got to be a kick to run with the Intimidator well there's a lot of things happen it builds his confidence up he learns to run the car inside outside our hearts and I don't give him any extra room and so he went to school today he's graduated and now he's gonna be teaching bill if you think that's what you need to do huh so I work with it work or other real instructor not bonnet but I mean you didn't air with Alabama yeah I think he's been talking about him as the coach all day out here and meanwhile his old hunting partner is putting it on this field and pretty strong man you guys been hunting that this year we went this past winter yeah the only thing I beat him in a long time we'll be back with more from Richmond International Raceway with a great deal bonnet Ken Stabler great in his own right all here to enjoy this great NASCAR racing stay with us active Richmond International Raceway where you have a look at the finish in this great 200-lap event I'm at the Fram fit Center along with Tom Peck who drives the car same colors that bright blue jacket had the misfortune to be in one of the bigger incidents of the day saw they took you for the mandatory ride to the care center most importantly you're okay yeah I took a pretty good lick but I didn't hit anything that hard I held on as tight as I could and I didn't bounce around much and yeah I just basically went for a ride to keep everybody happy oh I don't know made too many people happy especially the guys behind you in Darrell Waltrip but we'll take a look at it here on the monitor I'd like you to tell us in your own words just what happened we can only be observers from our point of view and it looks like one car went up or one car came down tell us how you saw it as this unfolds it just look like Darrell and I rubbed right there a little bit and he's flying the whole way around and it put me off that outside wall pretty good lick look like you tried to correct there get the car going right but I guess once it starts that way it's gonna have a mind of its own well once the car turns right you cars are made to turn left and once they turn right they won't turn back so then you can do is just hold on and hope you don't get hit real hard and you knew they had to be coming behind you well we were running second at the times I knew they were coming there's the initial contact at it did it look or did it feel like you went up a little or maybe Darrell had come down I don't look like either of us went much direction I think it was just tight racing it was tied in close racing until one car went around on the blue car that of Tom Peck the 96 one up to the wall and you see everybody spinning or looking for a vase of action behind Tommy Huston found a good low road a low route to get through there and there's Chuck Bown right in the middle of it the red white striped car just just barely trying to sneak through and when it was over seven cars were embroiled in it they're out of turn number four you had a great season last year and I know you're looking forward to better results than today oh yeah you know we ran last week at Daytona we run six when we qualified six we're real pleased with that but it doesn't help come in here and destroy a race car but we've been fortunate the first race car we've destroyed in three years so you know we can't complain and these licks come and we'll be back next week at Rockingham K&N people record it next week there's always next week next week is Rockingham North Carolina then the series moves to Martinsville Virginia and on to Florida and throughout its run of the Busch grand national series Tom pack thanks for joining us thank you okay thank you Mike Fran took communications center let's take a look at the complete standings on this race number two of 31 that makes up the four million-dollar Busch grand national series for 1991 and again next Saturday off to Rockingham with all this great talent and as we look at this field and down through it get some thoughts from the experts that we're watching topside and around the track today a Kent Stabler and Neil Bonnett joe nemecheck certainly had another outstanding run he looks stronger and stronger I thought Darrell Waltrip was indeed blessed today he was in that in did that spin got it righted and didn't get hurt he was able to still come back and as you see on the board get himself a good finish in 11th spot Porter this thing's a big testbed right there for the v6 programs and to see these things we have very little engine failures and these things you know Earnhardt Davian the guys are doing some experimental stuff they've got people building those motors and they're getting them where they're better and better and better and we're seeing the lap times we saw this entire field within a half a second from the guy that made the set on the pole that had to go home so the ancient programs are really going I think the gap that the Winston Cup guys had even though we had five Winston Cup guys in the top six that equipment is there for those guys use it I think the bush fantastic guys are really closing that gap as they move back to the championship car for its a final inspection let's go back to pit road here's Phil Parsons my years in racing I haven't never seen this a couple years ago they said Gasman on the team started wearing helmets with fireproof socks on because of the fact of Richard Petty's car caught on fire at Atlanta this is something I've never seen before I'm gonna let Darryl whoops gasps man timer crin and tell us about it and this helmet here this helmet as this is a fresh air system helmet which has it has a fan motor inside and draws fresh air into you around your and blows air in around your mouth and up the front of the front of the shield here keeps the shield from fogging up now used to be the guy that puts a helmet on he put this skirt around where right your neck you have no air at all to breathe and if it was you know it was unbearably hot so this is a real good system you can wear it just about all day you know if you can keep the batteries charged up but you can put it on you know five ten laps before you pit turn the motor on it blows cool air breathing cool air keeps the shield clean and it's a it's a real good system real good sister an element that's racing in the 21st century stable are you gonna use that against the Minnesota Vikings well I know how important helmets can be and I'm sure that that one's very very important to that gentleman all right we're going to take a brief break and then be back once again here at Richmond International Raceway where the celebration continues for the great Harry Gant who's done it again what is 14 Grand National race Graham's 2000 folks begin to leave Richmond International Raceway topside with Neil Bonnett and Ken Stabler I'm Ken Squier we're about to take a look gentlemen at some of the major incidents that happen today in this race of which there were eight caution periods which is not unusual on this track Neil know that the track is real tired particularly is you have to get right here car pinch down load back in comes around this is what I think I hit something on the surface hit a couple of cars being Tommy Houston got away from Tommy right here really aboard us and so we'll crank the wheel back left just at the right time er good stick to stick it up a side fence and he ended up with the 13th finishing position here today after he had started dead last and worked his way into the top ten Tommy Huston car number six straight race or not the Jeff Burton story here today a little later on got himself in trouble in carnival 99 the pole sitter crashed in the wall tore his car up he had set up in front was not a record gone on that one hand he had to retire he had run with the top of the field through the first portion of the race the first third of the race before this happened to him here's the big wreck coming off the fourth turn I'm sorry this is where the gorge slid down into the barricade there in the sand barrier really seasoned damage to the Gordon when he hit that inside wall and Gordon was able to come back and finish in 17th position several laps down in that fort one of only two Ford's that entered today's race which brings up the question what do you think is going to happen to the fort's out here Neal they're put now sincere effort right now to try to get their motor program along the sheriff blame get development started with IndyCars years ago and they had a little bit a head start now for its really doing some work and they're trying to close that gap but I'll tell you it's hard to the wild Ford's close the gap chevrolet-buick are really accelerating their program so they got some work ahead of them now NASCAR has this bill France award for the manufacturers in this four million dollar series and it's going to put a lot more pressure on these car manufacturers up until now this has been pretty much a freelance operation but when you put up a manufacturer's award you're going to see the factories putting more emphasis on this series and to me this is the third most important series in the country now for the money and for the kind of competition the TV they're getting Jim we've always heard win on Sunday still on Monday I think they start winning on Saturday they're gonna sell them on Monday also so the factories are jumping they're supplying the parts of these guys it's critical for them to win these big races on Saturday also I'll reveal from you Kent Stabler about what you've seen here today I think anytime you have changes rule changes to any game you have really changes to football it's gonna affect your game plan so to speak and I think you have rule changes in this sport and I think the teams are going through a learning process of up seeing wind appeared and tire wear and things like that and I think there are a lot of teams that are experimenting right now with putting together the type of game plan that they need based on where they're racing and experimenting with new talent which was part of the fun of going to a Grand National race you get to see so many superstars but you also get to see so many folks right on the edge of potential superstardom and one of those is standing by right now with Mike joy again you're thinking of Ricky Craven he's one of the stars in the Busch grand national North series there is a second series in Grand National racing and this is one of the few combination events which award points to both the North and the South drivers Craven was 14th today Jamie Obie the champ up there was 20th Barney McRae 22nd and Dale Shaw 33rd so you go home with a point lead and and a real good day tell me about your race today well the race started out pretty good for Mike we with a new car and never have been running on the radio we had a lot to gain really and had very little experience with what we were working with but it ended up okay we're not really satisfied with where we finish but we got 199 laps in for speedy oil changing thrown up and I'm really excited about the year to come Chevrolet come on board with us we got another one back home and I'm just so excited about what they have to offer and those of you watching today up north can watch for ricky and the rest of the bush grand national north start when they get to your area yeah all right let's take a look at the standings here after two races in 1991 there you see Dale Earnhardt with 350 Harry Gant second with 335 then Michael Waltrip and then Kenny Wallace and those chants those standings are bound to change as they move to so many of those short tracks where the 31 race campaign goes final word from Phil Parsons today thank thee I didn't think the pit road new rules were as confusing as I anticipated the only thing I saw was that at the end of the race when you had Dale Earnhardt Kenny Wallace racing you would have had Darrell Waltrip and Davey Allison in a race for third fourth fifth and sixth along with Michael Waltrip and Dale Jarrett but other than that I thought it was pretty smooth it wasn't that hard to follow but I'll tell you by the way Kenny steer but we found one of your relatives down here in the garage area he wanted to say hello to you all right thank yous back and we're delighted to have you with us not really enjoy it is a terrific sport and I'm glad to be a part of it it sure is a terrific sport and world's force has been delighted to bring you this race from Richmond live for Neil Bonnett and Ken Stabler for Mike joy at the Fram pit communications center Phil Parsons down on pit road I'm Ken Squier wanna go racing go NASCAR you'll find tracks all over America to present great competition just like we've seen today so long from Richmond 200 has been brought to you by channel law for the tough jobs in the small jobs reached for the channel lock the handiest rule them all look for this drape on 5 gram gram air
