the time right now is a little past six o'clock pacific time in fact sunset at this time of year is not until 7 33 so we're almost an hour and a half away from sunset meaning the first half will be played in daylight the lights will not take effect for a while young and hostetler the quarterback matchup tonight a funny thing about that matchup there's a guy who has won the super bowl and the only knock on steve young playing in the shadow so long of joe montana is that he hasn't will this be the year one thing they both like to do al and that is put that ball away and run the football doug bryan takes over from mike cofer who had an erratic career here brian picked in the third round grew up across the bay and went to school at cal in berkeley and the rocket goes back to receive the kick rocket ismail who spent two years in canada with toronto and then signed with the raiders last season so here we go the final game of the opening week of the 1994 season ready to get underway and it's a beauty the raiders and the 49ers before nearly 70 000 and in a swirling win it's a bouncing kick that hits at the 20 and rolls into the end zone for a touch back and these days that's become a little more unusual especially with the kickoff back at the 30-yard line there were only 11 yesterday in the 13 games so the raiders taking over at the 20. and they went into the free agent market and when phil sims was named the giants quarterback last year hot stetler said i'm out of here and he goes to the raiders and had a great season rathman is the former 49er with montgomery in the backfield wright and brown started as a wide outs glover replaces the departed ethan horton perry is great wisniewski's been to the pro bowl four straight years most bar the rock in the middle gogan is the ex-cowboy and wilkerson rounding out the veteran offensive line first and ten from the 20-yard line and off the play fake the raiders go over the middle for a six-yard pickup to tom ratman and that of course is a very familiar sight in san francisco he's normally done that in a red uniform and he's done it with a great deal of frequency through the years defensively brown bryant young their number one pick out of notre dame stubblefield had a great rookie year last year and the venerable richard then lee woodall is a rookie from westchester plumber the ex san diego charger norton the ex-cowboy davis hanks mcdonald and hall is the foursome in the secondary second down and three this is montgomery swinging to the outside reaches for that first down and comes up a little short it's going to be third and less than one eric davis up from the corner to make the stop now you touched on a few of the changes for the 49ers defense and they felt that that was one of the things they would have to change to get back into the super bowl they have three new linebackers that start tonight they have an attitude in the middle there's richard dent with 124 career sacks from the chicago bears but they have an attitude with ken norton in the middle littles on one side gary plummer in the other this is a very different defense than it was a year ago third and a short one they've got mccallum in the game and napoleon mccallum on a second effort a true second effort maybe even a third picks up the first down richard dent was the first to make contact with him but mccallum who really emerged last year in the playoffs as their short yardage specialist picks up the game's initial first down well you could look at that either way as a real break for the raiders you hate to start a ball game with three and out and they have napoleon mccallum to thank and thank alone for the fact that they get a second offensive chance here with another first down a brilliant effort by mcallen to throw under pressure they set up the screen and rackman drops it and he had room to roll oh did he ever good call hostetler bringing the defensive line into him made it look like he was going to go upfield dumped it off and wrath and didn't handle it but it was well set up that conservatively guys i think would have gone for at least 10 yards up front you want to give your guy one shot slow him down a little bit beautifully established by the raiders on the offensive line and tom rathman had three guys in front of him and only two 49ers i think a minimum of 10 maybe 20 yards on the play second and ten after thirty two two minutes into the game and rackman swings to the outside up to the 38-yard line lee woodall 54 rookie linebacker and ken norton the ex-cowboy converge on the tackle one of the things that you see when you've got a bunch of new people in one place and that's what we have with the 49ers defensively is some breakdowns in contain and we have seen a couple of times now where it looked like a play was stopped in the middle the raiders are running and yet their running backs are able to bounce to the outside and pick up additional yardage we've seen that twice in the early going here against the 49ers let's see if it's a trend that continues the raiders with four receivers in this set on third down and three from the 38-yard line keep it on the ground give it to montgomery and he gets out to the 42-yard line very close to a first down bryant young the rookie from notre dame makes the stock and art shell trying to get a better look as to whether it'll be fourth in an inch or first down i think i have to bring out the chains to take a look at this referee tonight is red cashion we mentioned all those changes on the 49ers defense and never talked to george seifert last night he said he wasn't really ready to think that this team was ready to play a football game until just a few days ago but he said we are ready for this football game but they've made a lot of them along the line the linebacker position in the secondary and as you can see montgomery gets the first down they go to the little man looking for that first down he's only six feet in about 190 pounds a good matchup tonight is this 49er defensive line against this offensive line of the raiders the raiders are big strong and physical doesn't matter if you're talking about the 60s the 70s the 80s or the 90s the raiders play the same way up front and this 49er front four in the past has had problems with big physical offensive lines first and ten at the 42-yard line here's montgomery and he gets tackled in the backfield so they stopped him on the ground here but for the raiders a promising start on the ground i mentioned how important it is to establish a good running game mccallum gave him that initial first down montgomery gives him that second first down and they have controlled the ball through the first three and a half minutes of the game there is harvey williams who will also see action along with montgomery as the future back it's a good look at richard death and what he can do so well he is so quick remember 95 on the outside he just took an up move and he was right in the face of montgomery they tried to chop him with a running back that's not going to work second and 12. four-man rush good protection the pass is caught by andrew glover up at the 47-yard line tim mcdonald makes the tackle ethan horton departed went to washington and glover is the new tight end and a fine athlete he's 6-7 a 245 pounder goes up very high for the football he is a big man he was an outstanding basketball player we talked to archelle about him last night he likes the way he blocks and we wondered about that we know he could come off the line of scrimmage we know he can catch the ball can he block yes he can according to our shell just a little green he only had four catches all last year third and three glover in motion comes back the other way 49ers on the blitz and they're sacked at the 39-yard line by ricky jackson who has done that so many times through the years of the new orleans saints he did 11 and a half times a year ago became a free agent price was a little high for new orleans signed by the 49ers doing what he has done for all these years a lot of them 14 years ricky jackson has been putting on that kind of a show well he came all the way across the formation he lined up clear to the right side of the of the raider formation and circled all the way to the other side of center to find the opening to get in hostetler's face and get him down jeff gossett's kick a low liner fielded by dexter partner at the 14-yard line and he has no blocking three seasons last year 29 touchdowns in the 16 games he's got waters and logan in the backfield taylor and rice the incomparable wide outs brent jones the excellent tight end and up front steve wallace has been there a long time jesse sopolo goes back to guard from center oats is the longtime former giant ralph tam on the right side along with the longtime tackle harris barton they are really solid at each of the tackle positions and there is jesse sapolo the versatile one solid not big are they dan they they do things differently than most of the pro teams frank by far and away they are the smallest offensive line in the national football league but they do more pulling more trapping more getting outside on sweeps than any other team in the league and you get a good look at the fact that we have lost the play clock here in in candlestick maybe the wind blew the light bulbs out the wind is blowing briskly i'm going to take a guess that it's blowing a good solid 30 miles an hour the flags are starched as the wind sweeps off the bay and you can hear it hitting our microphones even up here in a booth and as we watch the flags in the goal post it is swirling as that's nothing new at candlestick hal you're certainly familiar with it having done a lot of baseball here but this is a strange place to play and i think given the fact there's only been 13 field goals here of 50 yards or more in 23 years that'll tell you something about the wins at candlestick frank there is no such thing as a prevailing win here not at all there's wind shear but if it's helping anyone right now the wind appears to be blowing from our right to the left as you look at your tv screen so it appears to be at the back of the 49ers there is a start offensively and they'll begin at the 20-yard line on the field on the field red cashion's saying it will be kept on the field but at least it lights up to 25 whether it works or not we'll find out in a moment the 49ers are at their own 20-yard line they have the ball for the first time in the game no score young repositioning is running back since taylor in motion and they begin with a ricky waters sweep he puts his shoulder down and gets up to the 20-yard line he's running out of bounds by the safety eddie anderson number 33 in his ninth year here's the raider defense scott davis was gone for two years he has come back he retired mcglockton an emerging star harrison and anthony smith will now play every down used to be a pass rush specialist wallace beaker the second year man from colorado in the middle and the veteran winston moss and then the secondary with mcdaniel and washington at the corners and patrick bates gets the start along with anderson bades starting in place of hoskins at safety young on second that ain't a little high and off the fingertips of mark logan he wasn't going anywhere anyway because aaron wallace was right there with the coverage third and eight got a quick feel of what archelle talked about last night he said we are going to play this high percentage almost cliche term they use for west coast offense but a quick look by steve young downfield and he comes right down goes to logan but look how quickly aaron wallace is there they are going to play aggressive they're going to play a lot of man for man on the outside against jerry rice and john taylor the raiders love man for man but that also can get them burned third and eight up at the 22-yard line three receivers in the game nate singleton joins taylor and rice and jerry rice with his first catch of the season up to the 31-yard line albert lewis the long-time chief picked up by the raiders as a free agent with the tackle i can't begin to tell you what a catch that is by jerry rice and then after the catch making just the slightest of moves to make eddie anderson miss him watch it from the left there's anderson who misses him comes up with air and jerry rice gets the first down brilliant from the line of scrimmage excellent with the catch and then making anderson miss that's the only reason the 49ers got a first down bryce at the very top of his game in the prime of his career scores the 125th touchdown of his career oh and what a great playback on the part of steve young i think the 49ers just said to the raiders we have a vertical passing game too you talk about all the speed you have outside we're not all that bad ourselves raiders had him inside and out he split the defense first watch the play fake steve young hiding it looking at waters as he goes by and now rice splitting patrick bates and lionel washington never broke stride beautifully thrown ball perfectly executed as al said that is 125 tying walter payton on the all-time list one behind jim brown what do you say about that play every aspect of it was perfect every aspect brian's extra point is good that's his first nfl point jerry rice that shot quit essentially san francisco where else the fog rolling in from the west candlestick park in the foreground and the scenics provided by the goodyear blimp eagle from southern california seven to nothing after the touchdown and brian's kick is a short kick fielded up at the 15 by the rocket ismail and he gets tackled up at the 31 yard line by dedrick dodge and let's check in with lynn swann what you got lynn al you know this win is going to be a great fact in this ball game not the kind of pass we saw going from steve young to jerry rice the short pass or the big pass down the middle but all the touch passes going to the side i caught some passes from hostetler during the pre-game warm-up they come at you almost like knuckle balls if you don't put a lot of speed on them you have to have power and throw direct passes to have any effect in this ball game now all right lynn i think the uh the steelers still retain lynn's right i love the one he caught falling down but yeah back a lot of memories let's be serious i don't think steve could have thrown that pass going the direction the raiders are now right here's hostetler from the 32-yard line and it's simply dropped by alexander wright he put it right on the numbers hanks who's there but right simply drops it seconds just as we were talking about the wind how difficult it is to throw that away throw that way hostetler fired a bullet in the right that should have been handled there's no question about that you did everything but catch it for right you got to respect right speed nfl's fastest man for a couple of years working on a safety burton hanks converted to cornerback and hanks gave him a lot of room hostile was there easy first down he drops it right a one-time dallas cowboy second down and 10. this is montgomery looking for room and montgomery gets up to the 36-yard line and it was kevin gogan who was leading the convoy at that time and there is norton saying hey let's hear it for the defense well ken norton you talk about saving your teammates bacon containment was broken and ken norton comes all the way across the formation look at norton he's on the other side of the ball and montgomery is going to get to the outside for a sizable gain and ken norton comes all the way across and chases him down how many times have you seen that dallas uniform boy he is so quick but again keep in mind the 49ers had containment broken when the raiders felt like doing it they did it and that was just an excellent play by norton to save them third down and six good protection for hostinger who swings it out to this side of the 44-yard line it is going to be ruled no catch no catch incomplete tim brown had it broken up by eric davis now we see tim brown usually sure handed drop one right drop one on the other side and that ball gets a little bit of a wobble to it in this kind of a win and if you don't concentrate you're going to see drops like that stetler though you'd have to agree certainly doing his part he's delivering the ball the wind affecting the ball a little more than probably at this point of the game the adrenaline is flowing you take your eyes off it a little bit and you saw it right there remember you have to have both feet on the ground and have firm possession of the football for it to be a legal catch the ball was out before brown got his second foot down gossip to kick it's a liner to the near side carter fields it at the 25 yard line and extra carter almost broke it he's ankle tackled by aaron wallace and stopped at the 40-yard line and the 49ers will have their second possession at that spot after a 39-yard kick and a 15-yard run back with 722 remaining in the opening quarter oh gossip is kicking those low spirals against that wind and those are the kind you run back you can't get the coverage on it he's not hanging it up there and he's not getting the coverage and i'll tell you there's a good chance to take one back you can really set up a fine return against a low type of punt like that when you have at your disposal the highest scoring team in the national football league and that is the offensive unit that steve young commands it is very dangerous to allow them to begin operations at the 40-yard line that's where they're starting now and it's a short field for a very big group of offensive players first and ten 49ers leading seven nothing 7 22 left first quarter here's ricky waters nowhere at all greg beaker number 54 making the tackle they let beaker become the the number one man and it's a risky move in a way he played very sparingly last year out of colorado but they decided that they would because of salary cap considerations go to him yeah joe kelly was her starting middle linebacker last year and they wanted to make the change and there is their number one draft choice rob fredrickson from michigan state primarily an outside background college but now backing up in the middle kelly moving down the freeway to the rams and the pass is thrown too far in front of ricky waters who is covered by eddie anderson it will be third down and 11. normally the 49ers will be operating from the skinned part of the baseball infield here but the 49ers in the city have re-sodded what would be the dirt part and you can see it quite graphically there if the baseball season does resume they'll remove it again and then put it back in young last year in the first quarter throwing for the most yardage in the league and again in 1992 so he normally gets off to a hot start and that is the case tonight third and 11. they send brent jones in motion young sidesteps finds an open john taylor first down at the 44-yard line tackled from behind by albert lewis frank so many weapons i know jerry rice we saw earlier with a key third down to keep the drive alive and then the long touchdown and so you load up on jerry rice and you got john taylor one of the most explosive receivers and well unheralded to some degree because of jerry rice but he has great speed we've seen him have tremendous nights here on monday night football and then you cover both of them and you got brent jones the tight end with 68 receptions a year ago they're hard to handle at the 44-yard line ricky waters lines up in the slot and he goes in motion and then sets to the left on first down young behind good protection and that's an errant pass for ricky waters and waters getting into it with lionel washington i'll tell you what that makes uh lynn swann told us about the difficulty and throwing the balls to the sideline in the last couple times we've seen steve young try to go to the sidelines i think we've seen a good example of that ball has been too far out front look at the ball take off and that is the look of a football it's got a lot of air underneath of it that wasn't expected to be there and we saw the earlier drops by two-way receivers we saw right drop one we saw tim brown drop on the lord and early they would have caught very easily a lot of concentration tonight on the part of the receivers washington and waters they're uh exchanging greetings second and ten and he goes to the side and this time right on the money to ricky waters who's out of bounds at the 31-yard line first down a great block thrown by taylor these guys one of the beauties of watching the 49ers over the years is watching both john taylor and jerry rice block downfield they will take turns coming back and putting a hit on somebody that time lionel washington is the recipient waters makes the catch and from the left is coming john taylor and you can see that he just put lionel washington on the ground these guys are not just pretty catching the ball they're not afraid to put their face in the middle of the action waters in motion first down from the 30 waters on what amounts to an end to round and that is busted up by anthony smith i think that plays coming out of the playbook oh yeah the 49ers have not had much luck tonight giving it to ricky waters when he has been going parallel to the line of scrimmage when his when he's been receiving the handoff i mean when you are going away from the line that's a that's a play that is brought with disaster excellent read by anthony smith and a good look at it on the replay there smith coming right up field nowhere for waters to go the problem is if that's the defense that calls for him to get up field like that he can't be blocked you can't pull somebody out there to get him down second and 19 and logan finds some room in the middle he gets to the 34-yard line mike jones makes the tackle and now of course every time the 49ers have a drive going in their opponent's territory and have the ball there as is the case here you think about jerry rice and the next time rice scores a touchdown he'll tie jim brown's mark and there it is brown 126 and then payton and rice and jerry in the prime of his career he still has another five or six years at least three wides now for the 49ers they bring in ed mccaffrey the former giant played at stanford six foot five had a great preseason number eighty-nine trips left third and thirteen and young goes the other way and the cash is made by sherry rice so they send three receivers to the left when you got jerry to the right not a bad idea to look in that direction but they're short of the first down for that formation against anyone but jerry rice with a guaranteed single coverage over there almost and however they respected him they put a man out in front of rice and shook him off caught in front of the other man but still comes up a couple of yards short looks like they're going for it doesn't it it does fourth down and two at the 22 22-yard line and perhaps secret feeling in this wind in this wing shear evident and how his hair is tossled instead of going for a field goal a 40 yarder they'll go for it and on fourth and two it is steve young throwing first down to the 15-yard line to ed mccaffrey talked about his size he just got himself positioned in the middle you've got to cover taylor you've got to cover rice you got to cover brent jones mccaffrey who's he first down 49ers well that was an excellent job by the 49er offensive line up front boy did they give steve young a good look down the passing lane in the middle he wanted to go to the middle as frank mentioned mccaffrey's a beautiful target but look at his passing lane down the middle steve young able to step up throw the football the 49ers doing a nice job up front the raiders need to put a little more pressure on the quarterback than that seven nothing san francisco two and a half to go and it is batted down by aaron wallace [Applause] second and ten jerry rice was the intended receiver because he was the man over the middle he was looking for 126. you know he's going to not only break that record he is just going to destroy it get a look at it right here the ball batted away and you see the rice is open in the end zone boy that was really pretty by wallace wasn't it he was traveling one direction able to change course a little bit up in the air and get the left hand back and knock down the football nice work by aaron wallace double tight end set here on second down and ten and they send waters out of the backfield so no running backs in this formation and young throws and jones makes the catch for the touchdown brent jones so many weapons so many weapons and so little pass rush the raiders can look at one thing that has been their downfall here still in the first quarter of this football game and it's been their inability to get close to steve young when he goes back to throw the football look at that protection you just can't give him that kind of time and the man who hadn't been heard from up to this point in time their pro bowl tight end brent jones let's say it in unison so many weapons are they trying to cover him with linebackers and you can't do it dave young got the read double coverage on the outside friend zone single covered by linebackers in the middle who do you go to a good read touchdown 49ers brian point after 14-0 san francisco [Music] do brought to you by proof positive from mci when it comes to long distance for business it's always state invades washington florida hosts kentucky or other regional actions saturday on abc's college football man that looks like a scene out of a movie doesn't it that's a live shot fog rolling into san francisco not quite sunset 49ers are trying to set the sun on the raiders though with a 14-nothing lead in the first quarter the raiders are in an early vlog right now and they need to they need to get out of it in a hurry doug ryan to kick off and rocket ishmael back to receive it they need the rocket to rocker [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] just what they needed steve wardmeyer among other things coaching the special teams the rocket man aaron wallace providing the key block sets the raiders up in 49er territory with 212 to go in the opening quarter 14-0 [Music] [Applause] [Music] well here's a good look at the 49ers third round draft choice brian catching rocket ishmael and that is the equivalent of catching a cruise missile in a butterfly net them amazed at a rookie kicker under these conditions drags down his family here's montgomery and montgomery is tackled back of the line of scrimmage by dana stuttlefield a two-yard loss second and 12. monday night football is being brought to you by miller light great taste less filling can your beard do this russell athletic for a really tough athletic wear that can survive anything russell athletic get tough the all-new 1995 eclipse from mitsubishi the new thinking and automobiles and visa it's everywhere you want to be outside candlestick on the hillside behind what would be the near side [Applause] [Music] wind blowing up the storm on second and 12. the cash made at the 39-yard line by tim brown coming off a spectacular year tackled by davis brown last year caught 80 balls most ever by a raider wide receiver say what tim brown could do and they found out last year with jeff hostetler he has struggled with other quarterbacks over the past few years he had 80 receptions a year ago here he works against eric davis and a ball that was well thrown by house tetler this time i think you saw tim brown eye that ball right into his hands and when you're down 14 to nothing like the raiders are you cannot squander the field position that a good kickoff return gave you third and one double tight end set and the handle goes to tom ratsman and the x49er is very close to a first down with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter red connection is going to call for a measurement we moved to philadelphia next monday night and at nine eastern time in six pacific the bears went through the preseason unbeaten opened up with a win yesterday 21-9 over tampa bay against randall cunningham and the philadelphia eagles who were victimized by the giants yesterday in new jersey randall though a big day what 344 yards passing a couple of touchdown passes special teams of the giants really put that one away dave megan well art shell will now be faced with a fourth and that much a couple of inches at the 38-yard line you're really in no man's land here you're compelled to go for it down 14-0 but he really has no choice but to go for it but disastrous consequences if they don't make it double tight end set mccallum is in the game as the tailback rathman is the fullback and hostetler keeps it himself and should have it not by 10 feet possible is big 6-3 215 pounds and as i mentioned at the very top of the show they he loves to run the football they don't like him to run as much as he likes to run they he was nicked and banged up most of last year because of running with the football and they're trying to slow him down this is all just where the official spots the ball this is where somebody grabs it before a hosteller gets to the ground and and sits it down there it looked like a good surge by mozbar and wisniewski and gogan up front it looked like it wasn't going to be close dent was the man who was primarily responsible for stopping him and he does have it by the length of the football seaford and shell each man took over in 89 seaford won the super bowl after bill walsh retired art shell took over about a month into the 89 season and took over for mike shanahan who's the 49er offensive coordinator one of the interesting little subplots tonight and mike would love to be the raiders hart's first game as a head coach was on monday night football it's the gist there is mike shanahan whose offense has been spectacular in the first quarter he communicates to the sidelines they communicate to steve young there's a fake end around and a catch made by tim brown a lot of razzle dazzle and about a 10-yard pickup to the 27-yard line looks like they went to tom landry's playbook uh for that one type of uh multiple motions and movement we used to see from the dallas cowboys and it was roger staubach pulling the trigger end of one 14-nothing back we come with monday night football after this message and a word for abc station [Applause] what is this this is totally cool whoa man you gotta check this out look at this thing it's like an eclipse or something going on here wouldn't it be cool like if like right now there was this total next jenny jones [Music] [Applause] san francisco bay on this labor day evening first quarter belonging to the 49ers they lead it 14 nothing but the raiders are marching as we start the second period al michaels frank different dan deardorff from the 27 on first and ten hostetler throwing and it's incomplete intended for the lover he was covered by tim mcdonald the 49ers with rice scoring one touchdown jones scoring the other and statistically dominating the first quarter as the numbers come up for your perusal all san francisco and of course you can see it's it's unusual that you've got a 14-nothing lead when you can't run the football minus two yards for san francisco but the big passing plays to the big passing game total dominance for the 49ers in quarter number one and area flag that one penalty in the first quarter harvey williams his first carry as the los angeles raider takes it to the 23 he is stopped there by brian young they thought so much of harvey williams did kansas city a couple of years ago that despite christian mccoy and barry wurden at the backfield they chose him number one they thought he'd be the guy to lead them into the 90s uh-uh had a decent rookie year not very good second year last year forget it and ani comes to la i think he felt he got lost in the shuffle of kansas city he had a 3 000 yard career at lsu obviously a great talent average 4.6 is a rookie and the raiders felt there was something there that wasn't being utilized third and seven dent with pressure from the back side and the pass is too high intended for james jet jet was open too oh wasn't he ever yep if that ball is down if it doesn't take up on hostetler that's a completion dana hall was back behind jett this could have been a big play for the raiders frank yeah dana hall was beaten on the play but tim mcdonald got himself right in front of it and they forced the pass to be thrown high by hostetler [Applause] mcdonald without an assignment was roaming around back there and of course that high pass by hostile that could have been six 41-yard attempt jeff jacob kicked 35 field goals to tie an nfl record last year this one is wide had the distance but off to the right and they come up empty 55 seconds into the second quarter san francisco 14 in los angeles come on i can't take it anymore sparky go get hell boy stuck in the nightmare of everyday life you need for a stroll [Applause] days are over [Music] still going nothing outlasts the energizer battery it keeps going and go that's the primetime lineup tomorrow night on abc full house sister sister roseanne ellen and she tv coming your way beginning at eight eastern and pacific 1405 to go and i tell you what the 49ers have had some trouble harris barton has a partially torn tricep as he moves out of your shot you've got harry boatswain at tackler you've got derek dees replacing ralph pam at guard as steve young throws and john taylor was the intended receiver beaker comes up with the deflected pass and the raiders got a huge break and interception at the 30-yard line speaker had a big drop he was beyond the intended receiver got the deflection and gets the raiders good field position and here comes hostile on the offense after the big turnover following the missed field goal take a look at it from behind again how can you see it any better than steve young great play by mcdaniel didn't get the flag beakered with the big drop i spoke of a moment ago right in his hands big break for the raiders we'll credit that entire play to terry mcdaniel harvey williams the running back in this set along with rapton on first down he swings it on to the right side to harvey nice moves and williams turns a two-yard gain into a seven-yard pickup takes it to the 23. it will be second and three well the guy that harvey williams made miss was ken norton jr he was lined up on williams out in the flat he was in a position to make the play and he comes up with nada as he goes sailing by a nice move back to the inside by harvey williams look at that nice little spin back to the inside it's a tough tackle out there one on one for a linebacker against the running back and a good move by williams to the inside second and three with brown in motion tom rathman cuts it back picks up one to the 22-yard line tackled by woodall and ryan young it'll be third and two with 13 minutes to go in the first half 49ers would have loved to have kept wrapping but again with salary cap considerations and the fact that they felt it was time to make a move they drafted young william floyd as their fullback of the future and they have mark logan until floyd is ready double tight end set third and two after 22. williams the tailback he takes the toss cuts it back inside stopped for near no gain by gary [Applause] 49er defense like the offense they are oh so quick well that'll ride with it and cut it off that's just saying to the 49ers here we come are you tough enough to stop us in a power formation you got the wing to that side you just go ahead and toss it and this is the old student body this is the 49ers to go in the first half as you can see that great shot that craig channel gave us the fog is starting to drift over the top of candlestick park here it comes right over the top it's curling over the upper lip of the stadium better barbecue smoke i don't think so fourth and two from the 22. and there's throwing and the catch is made it was a little out in front of tim brown but he reached for it a great catch covered by davis and the raiders keep the march going that is a down and a great effort hostile to get it remember before the jury right touchdown the drive was kept alive by a beautiful catch by rice across the middle if the raiders go on and make something happen on this drive and maybe in this game they might look back to that effort by tim brown on fourth down big big big at the 14-yard line remember the second 49er march was kept alive by a fourth down conversion over the middle and underneath tim brown picks up about four to the 10-yard line gary plumber the ex-charger with a stop well his guys up front gave hoss the time to survey the entire field go from one to two to three receivers and then settle on the in the middle and if i was an offensive lineman playing for art shell you better believe i blocked like crazy one reason jeff jager kicked 35 field goals last year the raiders kept bogging down inside the 20 and there it is third lowest malig converting they're at the 10 right now on second and six harvey williams tripped up after a gain of three takes it to the seven merton hanks and tim mcdonald converge on the tackle boy and hanks took it right on the hip or in the back when he made that tackle on harvey williams he really is he threw his body in front of harvey down low to get him on the ground and merton hanks is going to have to come out of the ball game like so many defensive backs and wide receivers little or no padding on the hips with all racehorses you'll see the shot right here no natural padding yeah you can see he took a knee right on right on the left hip toy cook replaces him the former new orleans saint who just signed with san francisco third down and three hostile protected well attracted his main over the middle touchdown tim brown well it's only fitting that tim brown gets a touchdown because he kept it alive with that fourth down reception well i say one thing one man you have got to cover you play the raiders is tim brown you can't lose him in the traffic crossing pattern underneath at the top and brown got lost in the traffic he came out on the other side nobody even closed two 49ers ran into each other take a look at that idea the way it's designed watch tim brown make his break to the inside and look at the collision right there eric davis tried to stay with him got knocked off and that is quite frankly by design well you hope they run into a few people in san francisco in this entire bay area that isn't locked in on this game the old oakland the raiders and the 49ers that guy might have a tv on board you know yeah good point these are the knights pick taken at the nine yard line by dexter carter swings to the outside the 49ers are hopeful that he's able to go back in the game he had a big ice pack strapped to it a few minutes ago he has taken that off and they are hopeful that he'll get back in there damn andrew they're really thin now offensively at the line yeah chris dalman is their only offensive lineman left from the 49ers 49 ricky waters gets pushed back to the 48 yard line before you send carts and letters it's chris dalman not chris goldman abc's monday night football is being brought to you by the all-new ford windstar the future of minivans begins today at the 48-yard line that fog rolling in [Applause] second and eleven 49ers lead by seven they give it to ricky waters and he gets written down by eddie anderson at the 44-yard line behind a good block by harry boatswain taking over for harris barton you got a great brock by boatswain who re leave barton and i tell you what he got one right before it by diese who's in it right guard 63 and 65 the two subs that have entered this game both come up with big blocks there's the finisher by both swain as he puts the tag on rob frederiksen 49ers nothing new for them to be deep and have people come off the bench and play well and it's amazing deep and great in the whole salary camp situation and they just keep on rolling on third down and three ricky waters makes the catch out of bounds that's a first down push down there by bates and winston moss and ricky waters not one of the more popular players in the league if you pull defensive guys ricky a very excitable high strung guy who who really has i think got himself under control but who has been very volatile on the field and that that upsets a lot of defensive players but what a fine offensive player he has evolved into almost 2 000 yards the last two years but that play right there is just an extension of the 49er running game you talk about the high percentage stuff you get into waters in the flat and then let him run from there very effective 7 50 to go in the half razzle dazzle a little trickery and deceit and steve young takes off and turns what would have been a loss into a nice little gain he's out of bounds near the 30 run out by chester mclaughlin young is doing less and less of that as the years go by but of course through the years and take a look at that the average uh figure per rush normally is around four and there is steve for a career at 6.2 when he packs it in they had 407 yards last year his average joe was down was only 5.9 the second leading rusher last year what do you mean laying off now yeah i think he's laying off tonight that's right so far [Applause] from the 31 second and six logan and just about back to the line of scrimmage 31 yard line beaker in the middle there on the stop with 7 10 to go into half and there's a look at tam who's been bothered with the storage started the game tonight and he's out but the 49ers that the other guys up front doing the job and teams complaining about not being able to sign free agents and there's not enough depth and then you look at the 49ers and they have figured out a way to work the salary cap for george seaford and among other things at the half we'll talk to ed de bartolo about the secret the team owner veterans make some sacrifices on their own third down [Applause] well you could almost see frank couldn't you that his head was turned down field before he put the ball away here's a guy that just goes to the pro bowl every year and he knows it just a lack of concentration trying to do b before you do a well you can't do that on a night tonight we saw it earlier and then we saw tim brown change his whole way of catching the football right here in the game the wind is just swirling too much not to concentrate and look that ball all the way into your hands [Applause] you can see that's exactly what he did and the air gets it just a little bit throws it off just a little bit and you lose it here's a classic no man's land fourth and five you don't want to push punted really a field goal in this win who knows so they go for it on fourth and five from the 31 and steve young with the middle opening up like the red sea takes it to the nine-yard line he's really backing off yeah patrick bates gets that rare opportunity to take on a quarterback mano imano and steve young not taking the hook slide that i'm sure george seifert would have preferred he did i think he was like an end zone he had a shot at it it closed down rather quickly but a good read by steve young he had no alternative to this good coverage on the part of the raiders big hole fake pass pulled off one raider he just tucks it under his arm and i've been watching him do that here all the way back to quinnish ice cream he takes a good shot from bates first and goal of the eight five 48 to go in the and the catch is made at the 5-yard line and it is jerry rice who comes that close to tying jim brown to the one why don't they give him a reverse and get it over with i think that's an opinion that's not shared in los angeles oh i don't know jerry rice has got fans all over this country not many of them are wearing silver and black second down goal jerry rice one more to ty brown tight formation here and they send jerry in motion they give it to ricky water 49ers boy there is a total breakdown of the raiders defense talk about breaking containment two scrambles the key to that drive or the part of this man steve young who i guess is going to have to win the super bowl before he'll ever be held up there in the same kind of esteem as the fabulous and great joe montana certainly his numbers deserve that watch jesse sappolo number 61 coming right at you he puts anthony smith on the ground all too easy it's just not supposed to be that easy great execution by the 49ers makes it look easier than it is man what a good offensive football doug bryant with klaus wilms meyer holding and wilmslayer did a decent job to get it down but the kick is off to the left very high snap very difficult even when you are able to get it down it goes the timing off and this is what happens 20 to 7. only way this family can stay together is to have their big brother phyllis father's shoes and his mother's dress all our own previews tuesday september 13th after full house on abc [Laughter] san francisco is 504 to go in the first half candlestick park on opening night brian to kick off he just missed the extra point ralph ham normally snaps oat snap that time and the snap was high the extra point was missed 20-7 ismail and williams are back to receive for the raiders it's a wobbly bouncing kick taken up at the 22-yard line by harvey williams and he brings it back to the 49 in 1988 craig t nelson started the show coach he came into our booth in washington and we welcomed him there and welcome you tonight because you're going to be on on monday nights along with us all season long i'm looking forward to that yeah eight o'clock eastern right i think so yeah it shows up at different times depending on the length of the game and depending on how good the games are but if they're going to be like this this is fantastic it's a good game that night i remember you you almost had to play quarterback for the broncos remember most amazing game yeah washington and denver now do you credit us with a lot of your success seeing more all over the booth all of it now he's quick on the update and for the first time in the game tonight we've got a flag that's the first flag and richard dennett is going to contend that he was induced craig is the big one induced you can use that in the pineapple doesn't go to the bench and say coach i was induced gray gets a little the weather here in san francisco the fog rolling over the stadium and what i want to ask you is when you leave can i have your scar it's a lot like minnesota the little nip in the air you know it is football season dan you know that craig shoots in the 70s i know he drives race cars which would you rather do drive race cars or really right now we're driving race cars congratulations to al unser for his win yesterday at the molson indy great drive too good race all right how are the screaming eagles going to be this year well we're not going to go undefeated now we're not we did last year we were the national champs and uh looks real bad this year recruiting was way off hold down it so you're thinking about maybe going to the nfl right well we made the cover sports illustrated that was about it on first and five after the penalty was against the 49ers the catch is made by james jett who takes it to the 36. craig d it's great to be a part of a monday night with you great that the your show keeps on rolling thanks so much best to bill and shelly and jerry and the gang i'll give it a terrific really is craig it's a great show i love it thanks frank dan all right craig yeah dan yes how are you well you can call me out you know that's a song hayden fox coach hayden fox first and ten for the la raiders at the 35-yard line 420 to go in the first half important drive for the raiders down by 14. it's tom rathman on a counter to the 32-yard line for a pickup before ken norton in the middle makes the stop as the clock ticks down in the second quarter you guys ever feel like scar makers no over the years i just thought i'd bring it up we made a few [Music] [Applause] a 30-yard pickup did he get into the end zone the officials say no but what a tremendous move after the catch well that ball has to break the plane i don't think he did but he it was an unbelievable effort that move was part move and part just unadulterated speed look at the acceleration by ishmael after he heads to the sideline it's the move i like right here look at that eric davis is lost and through the middle napoleon mccallum for the touchdown well this one is living up to all of the advanced filling what a first half 307 to go in the half and it's now 20 to 13. and if they convert that missed extra point is starting to look pretty big on the scoreboard here's ishmael the play before mcdonald does a nice job of kicking him out of bounds the feet hit the pylon but not the ball oh you can only contain that kind of speed for so long eventually and that is really what looks to be a fine call by the officials of spotting it at the one yard line jager for the point after and that's good terrific first half 307 to go in the first half with the 49ers now on top 20 to 14. excellent blocking off the left side gerald perry wisniewski don mosbar the center napoleon mccallum just had to take it keep the long axes of his body perpendicular to the goal line and get in the zone there's wisniewski there's perry strong work by the raider offensive line the last two times these teams faced each other in 88 and 91 neither team scored a touchdown there were only field goals in each of those encounters and the raiders won them both tonight that's a whole other story as they say that was then and this is now yeah john the voice of john fasenda could be here tonight in the frozen tundra of candlestick park wind is blowing fog is rolling in the candlestick birds are chirping yes they are in the reconfiguration of the stadium to add a lot more seats and we're up around close to 70 000 tonight a candlestick park record speaking of the birds the goodyear blimp eagle is flying high above the stick i would imagine not an easy job tonight piloting the old flint and a stiff breeze like this [Applause] roger delta 406. [Applause] keep the nose into the wind keep your rudder straight elevators neutral jeff jaeger to kick off island and backs to carter [Applause] and he runs it back up to the 21-yard line i applaud both of these teams well here we go with a little but i don't see a flag anywhere on the field and i applaud both teams for all the kickoff returns we've seen without a flag on any of them tonight well just one flag in the entire game and that's amazing not only in any game to go almost a half as you look at steve wartmeyer the special teams coach but the raiders were the most penalized team in the league last year what a 7.5 penalties the average per game and almost 75 yards of penalties per game first and 10 21 jerry rice and moses ricky waters move and how he goes at the 23 patrick bates with attack a little [Applause] jerry ball there's jerry big number 93 weight unknown quickness it is known he is light on his feet great penetration on that play the former detroit lion and cleveland brown hardshell likes him says he fits right in on my defense he can stay here as long as he wants three-time pro ball every fourteen damage that need the last couple of years of cleveland second and seven as young pros and a lot of traffic and there's a flag albert lewis the first grader there for so many years a brilliant corner with the kansas city chiefs just the guy that you'd look at want to do a training film on how to cover somebody was albert lewis let's watch him here locked up he gets that shot in the five yard zone [Applause] i don't know whether you call that interference defensive holding or mugging uh i think that was uh that was all of it you cannot deny though the man has just been really sensational over a lot of years had a great year last year in the second half of the season he had six interceptions only in the second half he blocked the punt he recovered a couple of fumbles and big bucks when he came to the raiders [Applause] [Music] and out of bounds he goes after picking up a first up at the 47-yard line winston moss rides him out 13-yard gain mark logan with a block boy frank it's not often that the running back makes that decision to go to the outside bounces it outside and gets away with it ricky got a good look at the field that time and turned what looked like a dead play into a big game before they were stars home improvement with tim allen great show grace under fire with brett butler and turning point coming up on wednesday prime time in his second down and nine with two minutes to go in the half 49ers up by six young perfect pass ricky waters great touch on the pass out of bounds at the 29 dragged out by aaron wallace he floated it despite the windshear put it right in his hands at 23-yard gain you just have to admire ricky waters and his competitiveness he just did not want to go out of bounds aaron wallace is hanging him up on the sidelines and he just won't go out but blown coverage too dan no question about that steve looking downfield finds waters wide open anthony smith with the big rush for the raiders and he hammers young and he's close to drawing a flag with that hammer watch wallace here who just gets him from behind ricky won't go out of bounds ends up paying for it with a hit by mike jones but nice effort here is logan swinging to the outside and it's smith again anthony rides him down just about at the line of scrimmage well this is a series here with a minute 37 and running in the first half where the raiders defense really has to tighten it up they have done a fine job of getting back in this ball game at 20 to 14. but this is an opportunity for them to go into the locker room really feeling good about what's happened here in the second quarter they've scored 14. the 49ers have always scored six young nearly gets decapitated then throws and he throws it out of bounds and there's a flag down back at the 17-yard line i think somebody wrapped their arms around waters coming out of the backfield trying to get deep that flag was dropped way down and very early on the pass pattern red cashmere the raiders oh that's a tough mistake with 110 remaining in the half illegal contact while the quarterback was still in the pocket five yards first down oh they're going to call that every time this year they did it in pre-season they've warned everyone well you can you can only can i make that contact within five yards well what art shell is arguing and red cash and addressed it was that art saying he was out of the pocket you see once the quarterback leaves the pocket the bumping downfield can happen here is dexter carter carrying on a sweep inside that's funny and he's out of bounds at the 16-yard line you touched on it now he's almost a miracle but he's here they thought he was going to have two weeks ago reconstructive knee surgery torn ligaments it was diagnosed as and uh and he's back he's running and uh running back kickoffs is really remarkable well his role has has changed vastly he was their number one pick out of florida state in 90 but turned out not to be the answer waters was and now dexter's primary role is to run back punts and kickoffs and he's the back up the waters who's back in the game in the second down and three at the 16-yard line and waters has to reverse his field they close him down at the 23-yard line chester mcglockton under a minute to play in the half that's almost impossible anymore but the speed of the people who play this game today timeout san francisco well well done by the raiders at the front side of the play and then anthony smith number 94 who really has developed into one of the fine defensive ends in the game stayed home on the backside and when ricky reversed his field he was looking at big number 94 with nowhere to go [Applause] again can't overestimate the importance of this series for the raiders all right there's the play on the front side dead because of mclaughton ricky turns around and he has to stop because there's anthony smith it's easy to get in that pursuit lane and really take off headed downfield to try to get in on the action and not honor your responsibilities back home to art shell transpired on that penalty flag short while ago and archel obviously he's not convinced that steve young was in the pocket at halftime brent musberger in new york he'll visit with dan marino with the five touchdowns yesterday peter king comes along and then edgar bartolo the owner of the 49ers will join us as well on the lexus halftime report on third and eleven the handoff to mark logan who takes it down to the 15 yard line the 49ers have a pair of timeouts remaining as do the raiders and the clock continues to run what seaford would like to do of course is take as much time off the clock as he can and put it into the end zone and leave the raiders with nothing now they're going to go for the field goal and try to pad their lead by another three bart oats remember who is snapping the former giant with that bad snap on the extra point earlier and that cost them the extra point they're gonna let the clock go down call timeout as they do here with eight seconds so he'll snap again with williamsmeier holding in the rookie brian to kick i would have let it go beyond eight seconds because if this is a well executed field goal i think the raiders will still get a kickoff return if it's uh if it's good i'm not sure this will consume eight seconds well there was one second left on the play clock [Applause] and when you have somebody like a rocket ishmael it becomes yeah this is significant good break for the raiders that they'll uh that they may get a chance at a kickoff return now of course that's this kick is not through the uprights yet brian missed uh missed the master the last one and missed it badly on a duck hook to the left steve wardmeyer was shouting out instructions now brian will kick from the 23 so it's a 33-yard attempt trying to put the 49ers up by nine great career cow highest kicker taken in the wrath to share in the third round and they think there's i think what time out now crossing a little ice into the shoes of mr brian why not he's a rookie they give him something to think about actually there's a raider appears to be shaken up this weekend just to update you dave megat running back the punt yesterday for a touchdown he's returned a pun or a kickoff for six consecutive years tying bobby mitchell's record mourinho and uh moreno will be on at halftime 18th game of his career throwing four or more td passes breaking united's record and chuck knox joins bum phillips and marv levy is the only coach to have defeated all of the 28 teams at one time or another 33-yard attempt now for brian and he bangs it through oh you think he's that glad to get that one behind him this first one three ticks left on the clock and so the local boy makes good grew up across the bay and went to cal and i think they'll have a discussion on the 49er sideline right now that this kickoff will be ugly it will be bouncing and it will not be going to the rocket try to bounce it to somebody whose number is in the 60s one of those wide body guys if you can get him handling the football it's it's okay to kick it to 68 not to 86. even a 51 or 52 wouldn't hurt who 86. i was sitting in the stands in ann arbor michigan one time when the michigan wolverines made the mistake of kicking to mr ismail for the second time that day and he returned it for a touchdown for the second time that day that's when i became a believer i was sitting in front of a fire watching the same thing i was sitting in a pouring down rain [Applause] 23-14 the 49ers favored by about a touchdown coming in up by nine and brian is going to send it out of bounds so it's not a bad movie basically saying the raiders hey look here are three seconds and let's see if we can go 60 yards yeah they'll spot it up at the 40 and you anything anything that doesn't put in rocket sands is a successful kickoff for the 49ers you know another rule comes into play here now that is the contact illegal contact beyond the five yard beyond five yards of the line of scrimmage now usually they go in a situation like this with something they call a hail mary now you're going to be very careful of your contact because they are going to call it on this also and that's just hanging up for the ball and looking for the penalty and i'm sure that's what we're going to see and here's one of the things that george secret told us last night he was concerned about it martin is smiling that's a sight you you almost never see am i the only guy that feels old when i see art shell and fred belitnikov standing side by side on a raiders sideline well we haven't won so many monday nights early on does it seem like that long ago that they were playing and and i just i don't know it just looks odd barring a penalty final play of the half a hostiler just airs [Applause] dropped it and got hammered as well by tim mcdonald did mcdonald time that out well candlestick park next to carter back to receive the kick we'll see steve young's offense out on the field after the return as jeff jaeger puts it in the air and it floats down to the 12-yard line and it's taken there by a singleton that brings it back to the 20-yard line donald frank makes the tackle on nate singleton and that's where steve young will begin action here in the third quarter and let's take a look at the numbers through the first 30 minutes of play i think we'll see somewhat of a comeback by the raiders in the numbers department although they're still trailing by almost a two to one margin but that's better than it was at the end of the first quarter only the raiders have scored because of a turnover they got a touchdown because of a mistake by the 49ers and a pretty good tackle here getting started off here in the second half by beaker logan picks up four and let's get an update from lynn swann al i talked with george seifert coming out of the locker room at halftime both ralph tam and harris barton right tackling right guard will not play in the second half it's of great concern to him also in the first half when he went forward on fourth he said depends on where he is in the football field he has great confidence in his offensive unit but you might see him going forward more often on fourth second down and six at the 24 yard line off the fake covering on the play albert lewis closing in to break it up lewis made a great play on that stage to the outside had his eyes locked into steve young who locked on to jerry rice a lot earlier than he usually does lewis made a real fine play four times a pro bowler for kansas city look he's picking up bryce got spun a little bit but he didn't get turned around i think the wind got that football or else steve just threw it farther back to the outside of the field than he wanted you see that was one of the weaker sales jobs of all time by chester mclaughlin and ball are both in the middle of that line they bring about 650 pounds to it both of them well over 300. chester about 10 seconds after the play gave a very very weak point to one of the offensive linemen over there i don't think that's convinced anybody 120 to go in the third 49ers up 23 to 14. first 43 and the cash the flag is down brent jones bumped down at the 15-yard line oh here comes another flag late another one just got thrown there's a flag at the 45 a flag at the 29 and they are for separate things yep one at the inception of the play and the other after the play [Applause] offside number 29 lined up in the neutral zone there's no foul on the other flag that's picked up that penalty is declined albert lewis the cornerback lined up john fox can't believe it here's brent jones who man coverage everybody's still running downfield with their respective 49er and has a wide open field kind of lets up a little bit at the end there and takes a good shot from anderson ball at the 15-yard line ricky waters takes it to the 11 that's a gain of four under a minute to play in the third quarter 49ers with two drives in the first quarter led 14 to nothing led 23 to 14 at the half and that's where we are right now in the thus far scoreless third quarter miss aubry and jones make a big play actually no one carrying him man for man this is where they like to work with bren jones too down in this area because they tend to want to put two people on taylor they want to put two people on rice and usually they try to do something with brent jones with linebackers he destroys that second and six ricky waters dragged down at the nine yard line mclaughlin again very active in this quarter yeah we talk about fronting a guy up and staying in front of him watch the job being done by the 49er offensive line look at this steve young doesn't even have he could have kept it for another three or four seconds impossible to maintain coverage back in the raiders secondary when the front four gets as little pressure on the quarterback as that well forget as little pressure no pressure whatsoever magnificent work by the 49er offensive line ryan's kick taken by harvey williams and he gets banged down at the 20-yard line hello hello what a shot administered there adam walker number 27 comes in with a big pop adam walker he of the of the many cuts he's been 12 or 20 times he's been moved by the 49ers cut resign practice squad traded he just keeps resurfacing in there with adrian hardy between the two of them they got it done raiders now trailing by 16. and hostile throws to james jett you know one of the new rules now comes into play and it's the great two-point conversion rule in the past you're down by 16 you are three scores away right now you're two touchdowns and two two point conversions away it's a whole other situation you're two scorers down any way you look at it and you're a good company man now [Applause] 16 points we got a tie ball game with their receivers anything's possible second down and two ross teddler dumps it over the middle batted into the air intercepted by dennis brown ken norton got a hand on it batted it in the air brown with the pick almost looked like it hit the official the official was right in the middle of things he ducked at the last minute things get awful congested in the middle jeff hostetler who has played pretty well tonight this is what he sees he had time that was just good coverage by the 49ers he had plenty of time to i was about to ball that was a bad pass by the haas he threw it well behind his receiver and the 49ers have it at the 36 and young tries to put the finishing touch on here but incomplete intended for jerry rice good double coverage on the play that time oh and steve young is saying to himself somebody had to be open he got two on jerry somebody had to be there hostetler throws very few interceptions as you see they are one for every 47.8 passes and that's the lowest rate among the active quarterbacks the regular quarterbacks in the national football league you know it's pretty remarkable too al in the sense and the 10. 49ers picking right up where they left off last year big offensive explosion well the outcome of this game nice work by bates the outcome of this game is hardly a foregone conclusion still just a little bit less than 14 minutes left in this football game if the raiders here can keep the 49ers from from scoring they're still very much in this game third down and 10. and they avoid the first down do the raiders jones makes the cash and he's dragged down by anderson it'll be fourth down upcoming they refer to the offensive process there's an explosion 30 points in three quarters we'll see what they do here last year they had a streak of four consecutive games with 40 or more points unit was coming on the field now and uh george seifert brought him back again he looked up and probably saw those flags stretched out as dan said starched out it would be a 46 yard or two frank that'd be tough rookie [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] steve young had to let it go great pressure it was rob fredrickson the number one draft pick out of michigan state who was right in steve young's face a great effort to get it out to waters and a terrific effort on the part of waters ricky is going one direction has to stop turn around and dig this ball off of his shoe tops that's terrific saved it oh [Applause] upon further review they were lucky well the ball touches the ground but he certainly has it under two years control it's overturned i'm not so sure jerry rice and jerry rice trying to tie he does it well what do you think of that and the 49ers as a group streaming down the field to congratulate him times are great jimmy brown jimmy brown did 126 in nine years jerry rice does it nine years in the game is that right jerry in his 10th season two touchdowns tonight one two six in his career what is this his seventh rushing touchdown of his career i believe even steve young got down on the ground trying to make a block there [Applause] [Music] most career touchdowns and we started to talk about it before he's got barring injury several years left he will he'll do to that mark but wayne gretzky's done to a lot of records and hockey just blow him out and i would imagine right now there's a pretty happy guy in kansas city watching this game thinking that uh hey i had a little part of that joe and they're gonna see joe in person on sunday his smile takes the short kick and the rocket runs out of fuel at the 37-yard line singleton makes the tackle another look at a little bit of history here rice and brown at 126. payton at 125 and then john regans and marcus allen still going with 114. here it is again his seventh career rushing touchdown you know and ricky uh ricky waters barely got the handoff he was being tackled almost as he handed the ball off to jerry rice but again this is partly jerry rice but more than anything else that was just wonderful execution by the 49ers on first half of the 37 throws and that's enough for another first down as rocket ismail holds it in a 10-yard pickup you know we kind of get carried away with jerry rice's jerry rice that jerry rice on that play didn't have to run over anybody he didn't have to run around anybody that was again just a classic example of how this 49er football team is just so well schooled and a highly disciplined football machine they are solid from the 47-yard line san fran up by 23. underneath taxes made by raccoon tom is tackled at the big 50 ken norton makes the stop we mentioned it earlier tonight as you look at rice and the arsenal what a great night this is for mike shanahan as well the offensive coordinator got a chance to coach the raiders for a year and a third wasn't real happy the way things ended up and to come back and beat the raiders is very special for him hostile throws incomplete intended for daryl hobbs and there he is and you begin to wonder will he get another shot so many of the 49er assistants mike holmgren now at green bay and dennis green with minnesota and through the years and will mike get another shot again at a head coaching spot somebody asked him will he have another shot after he was left by after he was let out by the raiders you said you mean my first shot of being a head coach that's being the optimist [Applause] telling it as it is he's got the pedigree he can do it third down and eight at the 50s flushed throws dropped this miles well that's that's not the first quarterback that richard dents ever chased out of the pocket boy what a good inside move he put on gerald perry to get in hostetler's face this guy a lot of people thought he was brought in just to be a role player here in san francisco but he is the every down right defensive end for the 49ers and george seifert wants him to play as many plays as he can the whole game preferably well we've seen some of those acquisitions free agent acquisitions perform well tonight including richard ken norton had some good plays for us and ricky the complete line of 1994 lincoln and mercury automobiles and lay's potato chips that you can't eat just one [Applause] 37-14 and gary plummer came up from san diego somehow some way as [Applause] eddie de bartolo began to explain the half this team finds a way to get these people to bring them in and have some depth and ricky waters up to the 14-yard line and one of the things that eddie talked about briefly at halftime and if you don't know exactly what he meant last year they felt it was imperative to go out sign a lot of the guys they wanted to keep and then front load those contracts pay him the money to count against last year's non-cap situation and that gave more for this year a lot of teams couldn't pull the trigger on that but the 49ers did well it also it involved eddie coming up with at least 10 million dollars that that was not budgeted to be spent on last year's payroll so he viewed it as a uh as a commitment to the future and there are a couple of the 94 free agent crop there ricky jackson richard logan he picks up a first down will take as much time off the clock as they can a couple of players were also given team incentives and they will not count either until next year they could uh they could be a little expensive next year if the team should say win 12 games and a players incentive is based on that how do these guys see where they're going with the banners up there captain tom mattis at the controls it's the goodyear blimp eagle i could fly that come with me in it got uh a player down at the 17-yard line it is anthony smith who needs a respite [Music] so for the raiders they're down by 23. they'll fly back home they are home have the chargers next week at home and a look at the numbers the 49ers with 407 yards and the raiders just 182 yards of which as you see only 28 yards have come on the ground and from the top of this telecast when al first talked about the raiders and mentioned the fact that they must somehow develop a running game to the conclusion of this ball game it's painfully obvious that the raiders are pretty doggone strong in all departments and if they're one glaring weakness and what keeps them from being a great team is their inability to run the football and if art shell is to really feel the football team that's worthy of a trip to the super bowl they have they have got to run the football and run it effectively the raiders are going home for the charges are actually going they'll be facing the seahawks there's logan picking up one for the 25 the 49ers of course go to kansas city and once they get by that game 49ers have the rams and the saints and the eagles lions falcons buccaneers so schedule gets a lot easier after the first two weeks talking to george secret last night we're talking about this game we're talking about all the hoopa laws going to surround next week's game against kansas city and joe montana and he said we can't lose sight of the fact we have a division game coming up in our third game speaking of course of the rams rams winners yesterday over phoenix second to nine at the 25-yard line i think george was just being pragmatic there and saying if if we're going to lose a game i'd prefer that it'd be to the raiders or to kansas city a team from the afc it doesn't count as a as a conference loss and uh he's right you win your division first and then you advance in the playoffs in your own conference and if you have to lose a ball game lose it to a team from the other conference and they haven't lost many over the years they're not going to lose many games this year remarkable record over the past 13 years somebody is going to have to really throw in a big time surprise for the 49ers and the cowboys not to be playing one another in the nfc championship it's a wrapping on the other side of the field and steve young gets buried by jerry ball free agent pickup one-time lion who spent last year with cleveland and signed with the raiders so the 49ers will kick as we have a little bit more than eight minutes to play in the fourth quarter 37-14 san francisco tim brown back to receive the kick remember brown with that huge contract he was a transition player the broncos offered him close to 11 million for four years and the raiders had to match it or lose them and they matched it the ball is loose a lot happening on this play and richard is all over the place he was into the backfield he picks up the ball he's at the 29 let's see about the call well the snap comes to hostile it looks like before he's ready for it and he's hurt i don't know it didn't appear that haas was ready for the snap of the ball there is no foul on the play first down the center could not be offside don mosbart appears snaps the football before any of the offensive team was ready to go [Applause] talking to this screen ricky jackson see there goes the ball there goes the ball and nobody's going with it and the offensive tackles are a tremendous disadvantage when the ball is snapped early ricky jackson was a guy coming around the corner richard det from the other side and bruce wilkerson gets a tackle there on ricky jackson crowd is standing jerry they want to see the record broken yeah boy what a shot no hospital just that's an early snap and boy that that puts everybody in a hole william floyd now into the game as jerry rice splits wide right floyd one of their two number one round draft choices the pullback and the rookie carries for the first time and william floyd picks up three to the 27-yard line oh and there goes nolan harrison he's jackhammer steve wallace from behind wallace doing the smart thing walking back to the huddle former pro bowler didn't make it last year as contemporary on the other side harris bart made it but what a fine football player and playing that extremely important left tackle position although with the 49ers not the same as any other team because the fact that young's a left-hander harris barton actually has to fill that role on the other side right now harry boatswain filling in for harris park six and a half minutes to go try to figure that out 49 23 second at seven young slides out of bounds of the 22 and uh let's find out about napoleon mccallum's condition what do you know lin swan ah they took him out with would have been the centerfield fence for the baseball configuration put him in the ambulance and took him to stanford hospital officially it's a dislocated left knee but they took the time to call his wife to reassure her that everything that could be done would be done for her husband and hopefully as you said she didn't have to see that terrible injury now okay thank you lynn and napoleon mccallum hurt earlier in the half and aaron wallace is shaken up right now while we uh while we love to see every television set in america tuned to monday night football i i'm for one i'm hopeful that it's it was not on tonight at the mccallum household the 49ers have taken a time out with 5 39 to go raiders going home to face seattle next week you know there's a little bit of an ironic twist to this game as well as you look at eddie debartolo when al davis had the team in oakland he had a partner by the name of wayne valley and they were like oil and water and valley wanted to buy the 49ers and davis did everything he could to make sure valley didn't buy them and davis found the de bartolo family and i mean really found it because he got a hundred thousand dollar finders fee for finding the ownership of the 49ers and eddie came in and ran the team and uh they almost ran him out of town his first two years but in king bill walsh and now they have become the 49ers the model franchise in sports as far as i'm concerned with the bartolo france family from youngstown ohio still as the base of their real estate empire third and three and young goes incomplete chased by nolan harrison fourth down they have always done things right and first class and you know it sounds like it's self-serving on their part but there's some truth to it they can get guys to come here for a little less money if necessary than they get someplace else the truth also several of the players good and jerry rice gave back some of their incentive bonus money that they were likely to achieve and that would have been applied against the salary cap and consequently the 49ers were able to add a couple practice players to the roster unusual in this day and age doug bryant this will be a 41-yard attempt and it is no good and if you're gonna miss one you might as well miss one with 529 left in a 23-point lead doug bryant thought when he was drafted by the 49ers even though it's his home this is such a difficult stadium in which to kick but the wind's constantly swirling we've been talking about him all night we mentioned earlier in the history of the 49ers play here for 23 years they've only had 13 field goals of 50 yards or more and i think only three of those by a 49er they have to get uh you know brian is a it's a story for the 49ers because there's going to come a time when you're going to need him to win a ball game you're not going to have a comfortable lead like this all the time and and it's going to be interesting to see how the rookie comes through in a situation like that he's not been brilliant tonight and he's going to have to prove himself at some point in time during this season from the 31-yard line vince evans the 39 year old vince evans is sacked back at the 23 is the second oldest player in the league only jackie slater the ram tackle who is 40 is older and vince just keeps rolling along and ricky jackson's going to get credit for his second shot couple of good numbers around that passer vince evans the call will go for ricky jackson he'll get the sack but 95 richard 10th was right there and what a difference they've already made for this 49er defense the defensive is ranked 15th overall a year ago they knew they needed to increase their pass rush they wanted to be tougher against the run it looks like they've accomplished a little bit of both second and 19. and nearly had the sack and then the pass is off the fingertip of tim brown third down meanwhile the raiders who struggled with the run last year [Applause] did not look that good tonight with the run as a matter of fact very weak well that's you know when you look at their components they've got a lot of what it's going to take to go all the way but i mentioned at the very beginning teams have won the super bowl without great running games i think about the original 49er team and 81 didn't have a great running game but they had a whole other kind of offense the way walsh had it set up their passing game wasn't affect the running game didn't have to play buffalo in january catches made up at the 38-yard line by rocket ismail [Applause] and the raiders on fourth and three without a huddle we'll go for it down by 23. evans a pro since 77 when he was drafted by the chicago bears on fourth down [Music] goes down and that's another sack back at the 38-yard line started for those chicago bears now and then play for the [Applause] chicago fire denver gold then around brian young and ricky jackson was also there we'll we'll get the official scoring in a second but he might get a half a sack on that which would give him no they say no he won't we'll stick with his too well who's going to come in and play quarterback for the 49ers that's what's uh are they going to try to get jerry rice the record steve young is coming back out and i have to admit this is somewhat of a surprise it's 37-14 that's elvis gerbach the backup quarterback the inexperienced one and jerry rice remains in the game and i can only assume that it is george seifert's wish to get this record behind him [Applause] alfred lewis is trailing him [Applause] [Laughter] [Applause] and what a way to break it he went up he battled for it came down with it they sent him in motion and on the defensive backfield lewis trailed him and it was louis with the coverage but jerry rice is just unstoppable well if you stayed up late tonight and sacrificed a little sleep you can tell everybody you saw it live you saw nfl history in the making and you saw it when it happened he took it away from one of the best defensive backs this game has ever had albert lewis on the coverage glad i was here [Applause] that is rc owens of alley-oop fame with the hug we bother trying to get a conversion [Applause] price tonight that's the seven catches [Applause] 169 yards two touchdown receptions and a rushing touchdown and there it is your new leaderboard and i'll tell you who's not very happy about this i'll guarantee you from al davis all the way to the bottom of the raider organization there are some upset folks over there you know rubbing their nose in it and you know what the 49ers don't care no they don't on the field or upstairs they don't care they do not what a move all the sums that make up jerry rice speed agility oh look at him fighting onto that ball everything concentration you're right dad every component yep demonstrated it all here on one play it was not artistic it was not beautiful but it was a touchdown that puts the period at the end of the statement the best that ever played jerry rice they may waive the five-year rule for him in the hall of fame [Applause] you know brown jim brown held that mark and we'll we'll bring it up in a second when we get a moment to detail it but there are some historic marks and some of them have been held a lot longer than others and that one stood for a long time kickoff comes down to the 20-yard line harvey williams is forced out of bounds up at about 40 and there's a flag now some players are worthy of having records stand for almost 30 years and jim brown was one of them well among the major records you see brown set that mark he originally eclipsed the ol mark in 65 so it's been 29 years george bland has held the points records in 68 that's now the longest current mark and fran tarkinton owns those other three marks set in 1970 of the kicking team that penalty is declined so the great jim brown for 29 years held it and now jerry rice went by him and as we we've stated before in a couple of occasions tonight by the time he is done you tell me 175 on who knows well it's maybe going to get easier for him with the rules that affect the defense now the quarterbacks were going to have more time to throw the ball with the way the offensive lineman can set up the defensive backs can be as aggressive of the fan over the years that he set that record a little bit easier for jerry rice 200 is not out of the question it's 15 a year if he could play another five years that's another that's another 75 that's another 75 balls um you touched on something he's got a 100 quarter 126 127 now it's it's not beyond the realm of possibility and this is a superb franchise that will stay on top who knows that's it's probably unreal
