special 75th anniversary year from NFL Films whether New York Giants the 1993 season began as a year of transition but thanks to Dan Reeves and company it evolved into something completely different opposing offenses with the NFL's 10 Gia's defense [Music] they won 11 regular-season games during a season-long duel with the Dallas Cowboys for supremacy of the tough NFC East look James ah he's got a man [Applause] [Music] in the end the Giants earned an NFC wild-card berth in doing so they set an all-time NFL record with their 23rd postseason appearance more importantly Dan Reeves and company brought pride back to this franchise in 1993 the New York Giants reaffirmed themselves as one of the NFL's best they hope to stay there for many years to come [Music] right from the beginning new head coach Dan Reeves set the record straight the 1993 Giants were not rebuilding they were rearming and would be ready on opening day ironically on opening day in Chicago it was the team's two most venerable veterans that kicked off this new winning era in one minute and 11 seconds off the clock Sims calls the signals says a man in motion to the left thanks to athlete Rosa pass Jill Sims back as the starting quarterback engineered a dramatic last-minute comeback while Lawrence Taylor back from a serious Achilles tendon injury made sure the Bears did not duplicate similar last-second heroics the past big rush taken a sack by Taylor as it was an opening day different heroes emerged as a Giants rolled to five victories in their first six games against the Bucks a combination of power defense and power running propelled the Giants to victory reverses that goes back to the right side [Applause] a postie contested game against the Rams was blown open by the opportunism of cornerback Mark Collins every thinks the handoff on play-action goes to his right [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the Giants fifth victory of the year their depth and versatility came to the fore as backup Lewis Tillman ran roughshod over the Philadelphia Eagles [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Tilman left post pull up five pairs hand off colonel I covered the diets most complete and convincing early season victory had come one week before in Washington while it's true that the skins were hurting and the Giants healthy New York staged a spectacular all-around performance to stamp them as a serious force in the NFC East [Music] [Music] the Giants defense on its way to allowing the fewest points in the NFL smothered the skins while an offense that features some new players and new tricks seemingly scored at will [Music] fifteen he gets out of the tent chillin his feet he's gonna score [Music] in the backfield Brian Williams in its center in place of Bart Oates pitch and left side is this option think it's going to throw he goes one he's got a receiver complete touchdown what a call sherrod played that to the hill he was widel [Applause] samms Rosangela went down phil simms in one of the finest performances of the season was nearly flawless as he hit on 14 of 17 passes including three touchdowns Sam's has some time for a change drones receiver open Sherrod Sherrod actually get a nice pass bait fire run fake fight Sims the 41-7 destruction of their division rivals represented the worst beating the Redskins ever suffered at RFK Stadium a five and one Dan Reeves Giants were all alone in first place in the NFC's okay let's get right to it here's the top 10 reasons why Dan Reeves diets came so far in 1993 reason number 10 there was Dan Reeves himself as a player and coach he had always been a winner and this was something he communicated to his players [Applause] [Music] - overshoot great catch going horizontal the gravel way he was wide open no one was there same spot I'm a little late fine reason number 9 the coaching staff Dan Reeves put together a staff that was a mere reflection of his own Drive and dedication while we wall is we want good run technique [Music] number two we've got a lot of slide motions you ready go to sorrow and now you gotta be able to open up and play your have so come but there's still no routes and stuff like that [Music] reason number 8 Mike Nolan the defensive coordinator was responsible for new changes in the Giants defensive vocabulary we got under under gas - ready special Jack kept to wrinkle 64 that's what we do this that's six for the last six six six yeah says six [Music] special giant yep six but while the wording was complicated Nolan's attacking schemes were not don't work good work reason number seven Dan Reeves wanted more pizzazz in his office new coordinator George Henshaw carried through with his head coach's plans strong web sims hands all pitch back Tim's has the ball he's going rain down he's got Jackson he's gonna put stone [Applause] the heck of a call by Henshaw reason number six how about that infusion of you cross the tight end on the right Sims takes the snap play-action looking looking looking out fires the ball deep down the left side and a one-handed catch by Aaron Pierce at midfield he's better bounds inside when I hit second-year tight end Aaron Pierce displayed some big play potential on defense rookies like Willie Beamen [Music] Jessie Armstead Marcus Buckley and Mike Strahan were given on-the-job training [Music] meanwhile second-year players like Philippi sparks Cory Raymond and Keith Hamilton showed considerable improvement de Burgh steps up any sector control line and it will it be a safety by news Hamilton yes it is Keith pelted with the safety and the Chaya Stanley indeed it was the efforts of Hamilton with his team-leading 11 and half sacks that helped to revive the Giants pass rush [Music] reason number five the backup kicker yes that's right the backup kicker [Music] brand Eloisa was signed to deliver devastating kickoffs but the investment in him yielded a big dividend when he did in the Cardinals with this middle he's got a man complete you're on first down broken cycle I lose the second tackle [Applause] 2015 stumbles and go that a mile [Applause] reason number three was David Megan Dan Reeves had wanted to increase Magus role in the offense the fifth year back from Towson State responded with a career-high 329 yards rushing and a perfect passing rating Derek Brown is it megacles head motion behind the line takes the ball he has a free pass reason number two was the power running game while the Giants have made changes in 1993 they did not fool around with the bread-and-butter of their offensive attack rodney hampton running behind a big and talented offensive line in 1993 rodney hampton continued his rise as one of the NFL's elite running backs for the third straight year he rushed for over a thousand yards and was the key component in the NFL's most efficient ball control offense [Applause] what a drive by the diet Thompson foot they said Pearson votes to the left paddle hat deadly pie [Applause] finally there's reason number one quarterback Phil Simms indeed of all of Dan Reeves decisions in 1993 none had more impact than the restoration of Simms to the starting quarterback role at the age of 38 Samms took virtually every snap threw for over 3,000 yards and hit on 15 touchdown passes he was never better and more inspiring and during a three-week stretch in December when the Giants made their push toward the NFC playoffs drop straight back a saccade throws down the sefer cross to the goal line touchdown Giants the sea Raptor Howard Cross 20 yards of the Giants take the lead that goes round and go to the left Simms try to pass look look look same zone he's got a man [Applause] the pension backwards right in his face [Applause] the third the ball is on the nine yard line Sims was a corner touchdown I believe he's in yes JC then samus takes a pitch Dewar's left Rose with white complete the cloth at the goal line but now we call it or what in New Orleans the Giants went ahead with a pair of Phil Simms touchdown passes before a Dave Megan punt return secured a win and a playoff berth hi Nerys well and again Beckett is not clever a fair catch budget for the 30 loads attack 13514 he's in the 4550 he's at the 45 he will school [Music] seventy-five yards the Giants had won their 11th game postseason competition loom but so did a showdown with Dallas for the NFC Eastern title [Music] if there was one game that symbolized how far the Giants had come in 1993 it was their season-ending shootout with the Cowboys [Applause] the defending Super Bowl champions dominated in the first half building up a 13 to nothing lead but Dan Reeves diane's had worked too hard in 1993 had come too far to simply lay down even if they were up against pro football's finest team just don't block partially blocked then get it away cleanly bounces the 40 big forward bounce for the Giant [Applause] Afton behind bunch crowd is on its feet since watts quiet he might not get it this time James has the ball Hampton [Applause] yeah [Music] [Applause] Sam's handle happen [Applause] [Music] he hasn't been 32y honor snaps fun cut the distance listen [Applause] in the second half the Giants fought back bravely but in overtime a Dallas Cowboy team on its way to a second straight NFL title proved to be too hard to handle [Music] the division was lost but a wild card game beckon on a cold and windy day in January the Minnesota Vikings came to town there was no question that this battle between two of the league's best defensive teams would be anything but pretty [Music] [Applause] [Applause] the Giants took an early lead but it was Minnesota who got to the endzone first [Applause] and halftime it was gut check time for the Giants but a second-half comeback that characterized the Giants season carried them to victory [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the Giants prevailed 17 to 10 and moved on to San Francisco perhaps it was a strain of playing in too tough difficult defensive balance perhaps the 1993 Giants had simply gone as far as they could go whatever the reasons the Giants season came to an end at Candlestick Park but that disappointing day in San Francisco represented only the Setting Sun of a single season not the end of a bright promising era of Giants football [Music] in 1993 the Giants said goodbye to lawrence taylor partings of course are never easy especially when the man who's leaving is the greatest offensive player of all time to have a guy with that type of size that type of an explosion to be as quick off the balls he was to be as tenacious as he is to have that all in in one package it's gonna be very difficult to ever find again you may find someone with you know several those qualities but putting all those qualities together with the size the explosion of quickness the speed the tenacious Ness all the things that he has I think it's gonna be that hard to really find somebody like Lawrence again [Music] large tailors legacy is staggered he changed the art of defense change the way the games play and above all he changed and transformed the Giants before LT came to the Giants they suffered through many losing seasons he helped to make them winners thirteen years later he is leaving them as winners indeed in 1993 the Jazz proved that they are back among the best in the NFL they are likely to stay there for many years to come hi I'm Steve Sabol in 1993 Dan Reeves did a phenomenal job in turning what looked to be a year of transition into a season of triumph but this year he faces a far more difficult task take free agency well this new era of player movement has benefited some teams it's been a bane to the Giants who seem to lose a starting player every month then there's Phil Simms now he had a remarkable season in 1993 but he needed offseason and shoulder surgery and his prospects for a healthy comeback at the age of 39 have to be a concern then there's the retiring Lawrence Taylor LT skills may have been diminishing but his inspired leadership will be sorely missed Dan Reeves faces a tough task with a team in transition but then look that's what everyone said before he successfully guided the Giants to a winning season in 1993 yes indeed 1993 turn from a transition year into a winning year but that only makes Dan Reeves job in 1994 even more difficult there are many questions above all how bad a free agency hurt this team I think the Giants were very ill suited first of all for the salary cap the reason is that they had so many guys they had up to nine starters or nine starting quality players available for anybody to bid on and the Giants were having to whack away at their salary structure anyway just to even get down to 34 million which is the salary cap you know obviously they've lost two of their six best offensive linemen and losing crach and more the blow that could be a tremendous blow depending on Rodney Hamptons health is is the loss of Lois Tillman to the Bears did the Giants overachieve in 1993 they really played about as well as they could play last year with that team and I think that especially with fans expectations you know it's very hard for me to imagine the Giants being a 12 or 13 win team with their talent because they have limitations [Music] you certainly aren't going to sneak up on anybody last year you had a chance to sneak up on somebody this year was wrong can Phil Simms come back at the age of 39 well it wasn't a rotator cuff so that that's a plus and and he's been working out with it you know immediately after the operation and I'm certain it'll be all right but you have to remember he's 38 I'm 39 so you never know so I think it's a wait and see and hope for the best situation but we have no negative feelings about it the doctors do not at the present time but you've been dealing with you know an older player so you never know I think if they can have phil simms the whole year there another another a 9 10 win team and a wild-card team no there is no question about it the giant faced a tough and difficult task to take their success of 1993 and carry it into the new season of 1994 [Music]
