very special 75th anniversary year from NFL Films [Music] amid a fresh air of optimism there was a different look to the Denver Broncos as they embarked upon the 1993 season along with the cast of emerging stars and established veterans 27 brand new players helped to make Denver the NFL's youngest team the architect of this renovation was Wade Phillips Denver's highly respected new head coach and under his leadership the Denver Broncos would return to the playoff picture one two and three and hold the Broncos opened this exciting new era against the Jets in the Meadowlands the head coaching debut of Wade Phillips was a smashing success as two rookies had an immediate impact number one Jason Elam kicked four field goals and Glyn Milburn number 22 accounted for 148 all-purpose yards [Music] Denver took the lead early and the defense never gave it up as Dave Lyman Dan Williams Jeff Robinson and Simon Fletcher number 73 created turnovers that the offense turned into a 26 to 20 [Music] in September the Broncos had taken their first steps back to the playoffs however in January the season would come to a crashing conclusion in the always friendly confines of the Los Angeles Coliseum the mutants from LA [Applause] yeah they love us they really do they're all I think they're waving to me I don't know it's like a field trip to San Quentin back-to-back games against the archrival Raiders were reminiscent of the glory days of the AFL as both teams traded big play for big play and point for point [Music] [Applause] [Music] in nine quarters that span two weekends these teams would total a combined 1683 yards and 129 total points [Applause] however when the smoke cleared the Broncos would come up on the short end of both electrifying battles a stunning season came to an abrupt ending however the accomplishments of this young team left no doubt that the Broncos are armed for the future [Music] in the NFL there are only six days to Sunday and for the Denver Broncos these days begin early as coaches and players arrive much like any other normal place of business well almost normal preparation for the San Diego charges is set to begin and a behind-the-scenes look at these long hard hours reveals a hidden side of pro football that is both mentally and physically challenging and sometimes fun for that guy there's only one little deal he could be with a battle drawing near the passion of each workout intensified start thinking about the ball game that's time to get ready now you're on the five-yard line I don't know how they got here mr. covered a fumble or Sun sure as heck didn't drive on us someone's gonna be your mental preparations went into practice today the meetings so we got a 4-3 under sink and it's always said Shannon we just send him where he goes motion week and runs the same from there no he goes around excise it go the halfback has the staff seemed read from here the half backs again come out he's gonna shake let's have a good period ah that's cool let's finish strong huh we need to pick this up a little bit let's be sharp after six days of preparation Denver's talented coaching staff had the Broncos ready to square off against San Diego and in the second quarter Wade Phillips shifted the offense into its hurry up [Music] that I [Music] but above ACA stays 72 72 white 72 [Music] [Applause] there's the pass come on Marshall ergo strike in a hurry let it work way to work good job what award for time you said two wide receivers can't score huh all right let's go let's keep after now we'll stay with it if they get a woman we still go east and run him some know if we get the ball down here [Applause] this was Broncos football at its finest the defense takes it away while the offense makes the opponent pay 22 22 22 I read I read [Applause] Oh plenty John good yeah I don't work on the bow go for what go flood 22 flood 22 alright [Applause] under center he baked he rolls out to the right passes rivers [Applause] [Music] John Elway passed for nearly 300 yards and two touchdowns while rod Bernstein and Robert del pino each added the score and when the defense held off a late charger Rallye the Broncos had turned an intense week of practice into a 34 to 17 victory here's the pass [Music] [Applause] there was but one way to describe this wind and thanks to the Broncos entire organization there would be other victories that would fit this description gotta beat the team that won it last year we did that we got to keep going from here well deserved great job you work for it you've got a great job [Applause] there was a look of renovation to the 1993 Broncos as changes were made to enhance the appearance and performance of this highly successful organization on the field protecting franchise quarterback John Elway became a top priority with the acquisition of Pro Bowl left tackle Gary Zimmerman number 65 free-agent brian Habib number 75 became a fixture at guard and together with Keith carts Russell Freeman Dave Wydell John millander Bob Meeks and Kirk's craford this offensive line enabled the Broncos offense to do it all [Music] another free agent rod Bernstein number 33 gained over 1,000 all-purpose yards and together with another free agent Robert del pino combined to score 12 rushing touchdowns [Applause] this wide-open new offense also benefited from the talents of young receivers such as Arthur Marshall Center Tillman Derrick Russell and Reggie Johnson number 89 [Music] but while the offense was mostly you the defense stands to virtually the same punishing Beach I see strong long chacha strong I see strong chacha strong in the swirling physical glide around the dance floor a core of proven veterans set the tempo [Music] free-agent Dave Wyman number 57 proved to be a seasoned impact player similar to other Bronco regulars like Greg Cragen Tyrone Braxton Charles Demery and Dennis Smith number 49 inside linebacker Karl Mecklenburg was still an impressive run stopper and second on the team in sacks while on the outside linebacker Mike crawl number 51 demonstrated similar versatility other youngsters like Dan Williams chained ronette and Jeff Robinson helped Simon Fletcher number 73 lead the Broncos and sacks while becoming Denver's all-time sack leader Tom ruins punts often led opponents down the road of ruin place kicker Jason Elam kicked four field goals of 50 or more yards as the special teams that included holder tommy maddox daryl hall rondell Jones Reggie Rivers and Dave Wyman number 57 performed valuable contributions throughout the season number 27 strong safety Steve Atwater's physical and enthusiastic contributions to the Broncos defense earned him a starting spot in his fourth straight fro bowl [Applause] to game's most intense competitors at Walters love and infectious enthusiasm for the game kept the Broncos defense pumped up all season on offense that task fell to Shannon shark the beat the will not be denied number 84 was third in the AFC with 81 receptions numbers that also helped him earn his second straight trip to the Pro Bowl [Music] [Applause] sharp all we seem to get open and you always wanted the ball especially near the goal line three receivers later right here comes the Blitz now a lets it go in a hurry he scored nine touchdowns and for the second year in a row Shannon and his brother sterling of Green Bay were the only brothers in NFL history to lead different teams and receiving during the same year [Applause] [Music] [Applause] while there were many witnesses to Shannon sharps exploits none enjoyed them more than Wade Phillips who guided the Broncos back to the playoffs in Wade's world success began with a simple yet proven homespun coaching philosophy I gave him some coaching advice a great quarterback not necessarily in John Elway Phillips already had his great quarterback and when he hired Jim fossil as the Broncos new offensive coordinator number seven was finally given an attack equal to his skills and confidence a zero coverage a lot of one cover a lot of single depth stuff a lot a man really yeah Elway responded by throwing for over 4,000 yards and 25 touchdown passes with a little help from his friends he also completed over 60% of his passes for the first time in his brilliant 11-year career [Music] still a master of improvisation this new offense showcased Elwes limitless skills as an athlete as well as those of a pure passive yet what makes john elway great is his leadership abilities when you're facing John Elway every play is the hardest play of the game [Music] [Applause] [Music] touchdown kidding me and short thanks again inspired sharpen the boyo this is a great process about as good as drawers I've ever seen lways Houdini like escape and Rod Bernstein's fourth-quarter touchdown beat Seattle 17 to 9 during a twenty nine to fourteen win in Cleveland airtight protection help Dell way to throw for three touchdowns including this one - Derrick Russell given a new offensive attitude John Elway was even more daring and resourceful in 1993 he directed the AFC's highest-scoring offense and it is his presence that spawns the belief throughout the NFL that the Broncos literally are armed for the future week 12 of the 1993 season brought the Pittsburgh Steelers to Denver where they would receive a rough welcome [Applause] Tyron Braxton's fumble recovery set the tempo for the Broncos offense and it didn't take long for Elway to get it in high gear each phase of the Broncos bordered on the Steelers the special teams were led by darren drozdov litleo cherdon Tim Lucas Mitch Donahue Elijah Alexander Jeff Mills lilo Lange Frank Robinson Jerry Evans Anthony Lind and Reggie Rivers [Applause] red eighty-five he's gonna get it off the Delfino in the first half the Broncos were up by 17 points but while the sellout crowd settled back to enjoy the stunning halftime color and pageantry of Mile High Stadium beneath the South stands the Broncos were plotting their next wolves 7 when he started moving your avid mix right in you're the one movement so you've got a big to replace your on the wing ok Lansing there you you're a linebacker plug it up in there now pass key wise I need quick precise routes and I need a good firm pocket set clear [Applause] no waves gonna let it go again this time to Vance Johnson at this time he makes a catch intense and swarming defense frustrated the Steelers as Bronco defenders like shan-dro net number 99 hustled and fought for every yard where is this guy from he restin wha [Music] can't relax out here Simon Fletcher and Carl Mecklenburg each registered two sacks in one of their most impressive wins of 1993 a 37 213 whipping of the steel [Applause] [Music] [Applause] - you've never did you think advantages in week 15 the Broncos were challenged on their home turf by an old familiar rival [Music] [Applause] [Music] we've got the little crashing not to be a film handsome cell buddy Kansas City bolted to a 14 to nothing first quarter lead however this party was far from over a Ronnie Bradford interception of Joe Montana finally stopped the Chiefs and from there the Bronco offense totaled here is Elway back with some time steps up fires toward the end of the end zone touchdown Hollywood made the play excellent pass protection John Elway had time to step up he patted the ball three times Y stood in the pocket waiting for somebody to open up [Music] okay protected great keep it up so they would like to get six here here's the pass to the end zone [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] unfortunately for the Broncos neither was Joe Montana who staked the Chiefs to a 21 to 17 fourth water Lee [Applause] [Music] coming that's seven stick with their maker they're not gonna come up come up with a play sometimes they always do it man and removes around a little bit on off and say have a rivers coming up the middle and rivers blocks it [Music] regi rivers stunning punt walk with John Elway in point-blank range for the 32nd fourth quarter comeback of his spectacular career [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] look up the word believe in the dictionary and you'll see a team picture of the Denver Broncos however with barely two minutes to play in the Broncos leading 27 to 21 Kansas City was set to counter with a comeback legend of their own [Music] [Applause] are on their feet Daniela Montana never crossed midfield [Music] [Applause] the Denver Broncos straight over the Kansas City Chiefs at Mile High Stadium as they beat the Kansas City Chiefs in a gunny for the investments that the Denver Broncos made last year and this offseason are expected to pay huge dividends in 1994 second we go out there and play with enthusiasm and emotion and we can get where we want to be let's jump on them early they're there waiting for us to be as the season approaches the excitement is growing several young new players are eager to step forward there are also proven veterans and a brand new core of impact players will arrive in Denver as free agents John Elway's bombs are set to explode in the arms of former San Diego charger Anthony Miller number 83 a deep threat the lights of which Elway has never experienced Elway's arsenal will also include another speedster as Atlanta Falcon receiver Mike Prichard number 35 was obtained in a draft day trade Denver's defense has also added some punch the offseason acquisitions of Ted Washington Ben Smith and Ray Kroc at number 39 promised to give the Broncos more quickness power and some added Flair [Music] Bar LOB's around intercepted my cold [Music] with each and every step the Denver Broncos are seeking to enhance a tradition of winning that spans two decades and as 1994 approaches there's a strong belief all across the Rockies that the best is yet to come [Music] hi I'm Steve Sabol for an organization that's had great success through the years the 1993 Broncos attempted to prove that sometimes you have to take a radically different direction if you're going to keep on winning then many of these changes were built around a Broncos constant John Elway and most were designed to enhance his chances of leading the Broncos to a world championship now without question the biggest transformation came in coaching philosophy with the departure of Dan Reeves and the promotion of Wade Phillips now Wade focused on what Elway needed to maximize his performance during the final years of his career the results not only made the Broncos a more exciting team it returned them to the playoffs in 1994 there are even more changes and once again the man who will have to put them all together is Denver's highly respected and likeable head coach Wade Phillips y'all done good good luck have a good year congratulation hey thanks hey oh good I don't have to go out there we're all right yeah me too Hemingway was the right man at the right time for Denver what's those guys keeping that white what's the guys in the white sheet man because he came in right away and said what millions of Bronco fans nationwide I wanted to say to Dan Reeves over the years will you please give the ball to John Elway for 60 minutes [Applause] I thought it'd be a tremendous drop off after Reeves left even though I knew Elway would be happy with whoever was there we should we say that when Antonin on second down I have a tough time I get down now I have a narrow line out of that you might suspect that he's not real competitive but he is real competitive he's older he's older he's really in sync with John Elway letting Elway for the first time in his career to do what he's capable of doing he's taken the shackles off of them and I think it was shown by always passing for over $4,000 much of Denver's offense of success was due to Elwes input into Jim fossils new offense you like gentle life right now I like Jetta special sister Franco by given such input number Seven's remarkable career took an upturn in an offense that showcased his considerable quarterbacks skills the good thing that happened to the Broncos last year is the gym fossil and John Elway became the best coordinator quarterback tandem east of San Francisco wait you weren't good more than anything the comfort level that Elway felt with fossil as his coach was perfect for man and the statistics show it at an amazing year [Music] but out way going into the ear was concerned with a couple of things number one that people thought of them only as a comeback quarterback and number two that people didn't think he could be a touch passive so what happens he completes more than 60 percent of his passes for the first time in his life serves for 4,000 yards for the first time in his life has the best year of his career and basically dispels all the knocks that anybody ever had on the guy in 1994 denver expects one of Elwes favorite targets to be number 85 Derrick Russell who had a solid 93 season as a receiver out of the backfield number 22 Glyn Milburn proved to be a flashy elusive ball carrier who could generate big plays however he also demonstrated a knack for fumbling the ball at the worst possible times still if Milburn can learn to hang on to the ball the Broncos will have an explosive weapon for John Elway's Arsenal in 1994 the Broncos goal is to get the defense to play up to the level of its exceptional quarterback something that didn't always happen last season now what John Elway couldn't overcome is the el foldo by the defense I think what happened against the Raiders I covered the game and I think what happened is that you just saw that the Denver Broncos were too slow to compete in that division flat out they're too slow they can't beat the Los Angeles Raiders with any consistency with the defensive players especially in the second area that they had Wade's just gonna have to make some changes in the secondary and at linebacker to increase defensive flexibility to create this flexibility number 97 Ted Washington comes to the Broncos from San Francisco in a trade that gives Denver proven pass rushing skills Eagles quarterback Ben Smith number 26 is a former number one draft pick who the Broncos hope will shore up a deficiency in their secondary the Broncos top defensive free agent is another cornerback who comes to Denver from Detroit raycrockett is kind of an impact defensive back you certainly got the attitude [Music] you've got the personality to get things fired up he is a tall slender defensive back who can hit and I think you can always use a guy like that Crockett's hard hits and big play skills will be a welcome addition on defense while the offense welcomes the arrival of Denver's most expensive free agent former charges wide receiver Anthony Miller number 83 a lot of people would say why are you going out and spending ten and a half million bucks on Anthony Miller when you have all the holes that you have defensively well I would argue with them this way that Anthony Miller at two and a half million or whatever is more of a proven commodity than any of those defensive players that that you could get it's similar and even more money than that Miller you pretty much know that here's the deep threat that John Elway's always wanted here comes a tall up let's eat throws I think Anthony Miller is gonna be a big plus for them because it got Shannon Sharpe Shannon Sharpe is a big strong guy who can also go deep Anthony Miller is gonna be the guy that can stretch the field look at long throw a deep - Anthony Miller Miller brings nearly a 15-yard per catch average to Denver's already explosive offense I really see always just he's got to be ecstatic or this if his offensive line holds up with what he's got to throw to and with what he can see on the field and the way he can throw across the the grain the way he's got that quick release Anthony Miller is gonna love it - I think this is a match made in heaven a draft day-trade put another bullet in Elwes already dangerous rifle with the arrival of former Falcon speedster Mike Pritchard number 35 Richard a former Colorado Buffalo is coming home after a 74 cat season in Atlanta and his three seasons in the run-and-shoot offense will suit him well in Denver's wide open attack I think that this year especially addressing the wide reciever need there's no question in my mind that that the Broncos unless they have a spate of injuries you know should be the second or third highest scoring team in football I see the Broncos fighting it out with the Raiders I see the Raiders as being the team that everybody's got to be in Kansas City may not be able to put it together like they did last year see Denver's being a spoiler but they're gonna it's gonna end up having to do well against the rage and Elway goes back with a lot of time let's it go long to the end zone you know you have hope every week when you got Elway on your team I know that's a bit of a cliche but I just think that going into any game they've got a good chance to win the game for them to be a big player in the playoff race this year I think it's difficult to expect that they can get on a three-game playoff run especially after having been beaten up all year in the toughest division in football it's tough to expect that that can culminate in the Super Bowl but I do think that the one thing that you have is that a hot Elway gives you a chance to win any week [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
