My dad was at that race. At the time he wan't the biggest Nascar fan, but his dad had tickets and they went.
He eventually became a big Jeff Gordon fan. He wished he knew while he was at that race what kind of special race it would be.
Spring 2001 Atlanta was pretty awesome too. The last 20 laps of that race were amazing. Five cars under a blanket fighting for the win - the side by side finish was icing on the cake. If we had that kind of racing again, NASCAR would be in much better shape.
This was in fact the greatest ever ran.. this race had not only great racing but great story lines. If you weren't a diehard fan then you can't appreciate it. 2000 Talladega was a great race, Atlanta 2001 was a great race, but this one was better. The championship was decided by Alan Kulwicki leading one more lap than Bill Elliott, it's just unfathomable for it to be that close before the playoff/Chase era and to top that off there were 5 or 6 that were mathematically eligible to win it going into this race. Kulwicki and Elliott raced their guts out all day long for the race and the cup, it's just the best top to bottom. A lot of people tend to turn their nose up at it because it didn't have anything to do with Earnhardt, hence Dega 2000 and Atlanta 2001 being brought up so much. I was an Earnhardt Sr fan as well but this can't be topped.
Why did they change the track layout from oval to cookie cutter?

Bah.
There weren't any stages or debris cautions to break up the boring old garden variety racing, Atlanta was a unique oval instead of a cookie cutter, there weren't any playoffs to set up this one race shootout for the title, and the winner of the race wasn't automatically crowned champion by one point!
No sir, this was boring compared to how good we have it now!

Man, I miss the old track configuration.
I still have two unused tickets to that race. I had an extra pair and didn't like the offers far away from the track so I decided to hold off. I never got a decent offer so I just decided to keep them knowing it had potential to be a memorable race as I was a big Kulwicki fan.
