the first of this three-game series Gary Pettis will lead it off in playing center field with the very hot Rafael Palmeiro petty number two implying at first base Julio Franco the second baseman bats third Ruben Sierra second to the MVP last year in the American League he'll bat number four and play out in right field Harold Baines the th bats number five feet and Kabylia will bat sixth he'll play in left field John Russell will catch tonight he will bat number seven Steve Buechele the Stanford Cardinal will hit number eight and play a third base with a shortstop Jim Houston Scott Sanderson his first time through the American League having tremendous success in his 12 starts he is 1/7 lost to the two no-decisions resultant of A's defeats his the RA at 3.25 in 63 and two thirds he has given up sixty four hits but his 23 earned runs walking 26 and striking out 33 the defense behind Scott Sanderson and Carney Lansford is not in the lineup tonight Mike Gallego will play at third base as Carney will miss his third in a row with a strained tricep of his right arm Walter Weiss it short will here and off at second duck Jenning gives Mark McGwire the night off at first base Jamie quirk will rest Terry Steinbach and the outfield but Jose Canseco a lot of line up remains the same Ricky and left Dave Henderson and center and Felix Jose was playing well over in right field duck Jennings simply resting McGwire and Carney Lansford in the original report I got from Tony I spoke to Tony before the ball game he said Carney is gonna be in the lineup tonight he's good enough to play you and I can't both watched him take batting practice a very effective batting practice the time he said his elbow was fine but the start this ballgame he is not in the lineup well again you know we had a chance to talk to mr. Charney how's the bow feeling feels pretty good you know not really sure until he gets out and throat's a little bit and maybe Tony just decided not to take a chance guy goes doing a good job out there and give them an extra days rest the home plate umpire is done decking gear at first base durwood Merill john shulock at second base and Tim McClelland will be the umpire at third base Gary Pettis will step in to lead this ballgame all men ascending at 231 with two homers and 16 RBIs his first year here and after playing last year Detroit had previously with the California Angels first pitch called strike Rangers come in at 24 and 33 in sixth place and the American League West 15 games behind the Athletics days at 38 and 17 of won four in a row in five of the last six first time this year they are 21 games over 500 near Sanderson's one-one-two Pettis basketball he files back you can look at the outfield and you can get a good idea where they're gonna keep the ball on Pettis you like to keep the ball away from them they got one of the few guys you now you watch nowadays where they actually move the centerfielder over towards left center field doesn't like to pull the ball too much last time Sanderson pitched against me did but you just got to keep the ball out there Pettis blocks the ball as you see Dave Henderson a good couple of strides towards left and he's right on the edge of the shadow and the Sun feel very badly out it right for Felix Soleil to start this ball game 2-2 awaiting Gary Pettis there's a sharply hit base hit to left field going the other way they were playing him correctly but he found a spot and immediately have to concern yourself with Pettis as he is second in the American League in stolen bases a bunch of pitches away like this you look for it you can put a pretty good swing on it and he does he just goes to the opposite field the line drive batter is Rafael Palmeiro who is very hot his average up to 311 it is 7 for his last 13 with two homers and five RBIs in his last three ballgames Anderson gives Pettis a look over Pettis is stolen 19 and recently he's on his surge he stole three bases yesterday in Anaheim at the second time this year he has stolen three and he's stolen five bases the last three games a lot of guys that hit behind base stealers they love it because they get a lot of fast balls Palmeiro left-handed here likes a fastball like most guys and it gives them a big hole over at first base although you can't really tell Pettis just to stay there to give him a hole to shoot through you got to get something going he's a he's got tremendous speed you can see Scott's worried about him right there but that you can't get to got caught up in Pettis over there you make a bad pitch and then you're down to nothing now Palmeiro swinging the bat very well Pettis has moved up in their batting order he was hitting number nine but he is flip-flopped with Jeff Hewson who is now hitting number nine there short stuff Palmeiro and Scott Sanderson were teammates in Chicago with the Cubs Venice is moving jamie parks throw skips and Pettis steals second base his 20th stolen base of the season that'ss gets a pretty good jump now real big about three steps and Jamie comes up makes a pretty good throw it's one hop but Walt has to take it a little bit behind the bag and bring it bring it back in here we're gonna see Jamie coming out here gets rid of it real quick but again you got a guy with speed like that it's tough to get him Jamie quirk making just his fifth start of the year it is fourth as a catcher that is immediately in a scoring position for Palmeiro now it is two and Oh it's the ball to the air shallow right Randolph is back but coming in as Felix Jose who makes the catch that's a very big out for Sanderson to get I don't Lee retiring Palmeiro but preventing it Pettis from advancing to third base sure is now you can be kind of careful here with the Julio Franco you can pitch around them try and set up a double play combination Sierra's an excellent hitter but it is a big play you hold the guy at second base and you give the chant and picture a chance to get out of the inning without giving up any runs in the first inning that's a pretty a pretty good way to start Franco has seen as average dipped out at 293 as he is just 4 for his last 24 for a second baseman though he is a tremendous hitter probably the best hitting second baseman in Major League Baseball they will take his hacks and he follows that pitch back last Wednesday in Arlington against Scott Sanderson he was old for three before Sanderson was lifted he wound up going old for five and that ended it at 11 game hitting streak for him and since that time has gone to a bit of a tailspin strike one pitch fastball is just up in the strike zone last time Sanders had pitched Wednesday against the Rangers he drew a lot of those with the what Eckersley calls the slop drop the slow curve but he's thrown the fastball a little bit more tonight to start well again he that night he didn't try he wanted to throw a lot of curveballs breaking balls maybe to save his energy because it was so warm down there what you got to do you got to get ahead with your fastball and then mix in that curveball makes it very tough what pitch runs inside it's 2 & 1 in that last start Sanderson went 5 innings giving up six hits three runs they were all her and walked three and struck out two he was the winning pitcher the five to four went as the A's got a hit five nothing on Nolan Ryan this is a good time for him to throw that slop drop right now you know he Julio's anxious up there he wants to hit you can give him an off-speed breaking ball good chance we'll be out in front of it we want pitch it's up three balls at one strike a lot of times when you get a pitcher zone out there like Scott who does have good velocity but they mix that off-speed pitch and when you get out there and you feel a little better than normal you feel like you have that good pop you tend to go to it a little more often he's got some good pop right now first base is open Ruben Sierra a very dangerous hitter is waiting three balls and one strike they duck in behind but no throw the pitch is driven to right-center in deep Felix Jose is back back on the track that ball is gone a homerun for Julio Franco the other way and the Rangers take a two to nothing lead that's the situation right there where you a little went to the well a little bit too often a lot of fast balls away from everybody three one count they're easy to hit here's the pitch and is it fastball rate over the middle of the plate on the outside and he's just looking at for it there here's a swing goes right in it just smokes it you can see Felix Jose looking back and he has no chance on this one Julio Franco can't hit a career high 13 homers last year that's his fifth this year he already has 27 RBIs the Rangers jump out quickly Ruben Sierra miles the first pitch off the Abel gives a hard chase but the vault is three or four rows back into the crowd these two three four hitters in their line of Palmero Franco and Ciara nicknamed the three amigos and they're extremely difficult then you have the fifth hitter Harold Baines and then you go down to pete incavilgia is a very dangerous home run hitter this lineup is certainly potent they are struggling offensively and struggling as a team but any given night they can bust out big well they've got a lot of talent on this club there's no doubt about it their pitching is really their weak point but they got some guys that can score some runs and you got to be very careful out there you can't just lay fastball after fastball in there unless you throw like Nolan Ryan they're going to get some of them here's the one one little curve misses outside Ruben Sierra comes into them to tonight's ballgame with a six game hitting streak eight of his last twenty-four here's the two one once again Sanderson gets himself into a 3-1 situation and he winds up walking Ruben Sierra one of those situations maybe when he's down in the bullpen he felt really good or maybe he didn't feel comfortable with his breaking ball he didn't have a good breaking ball down the bullpen when your starting pitcher a lot of times you go out there for the first two innings and you feel for it you feel to see what you have because you know they say you don't get anybody out in the bullpen but he's struggling a little bit he might have to try a little something different here you're throwing fastball after fastball and you're not throwing strikes then you got to go to your off-speed that you got to get something over the plate for strikes or they're just sit on it when you do eventually get that ball in there they're gonna tattoo it and this is a pretty good fastball hitting club a lot of these guys have tremendous power including the man at the plate right now Harold Baines the guy that's coming up after him is no slouch either either the Inka villa is waiting on dick vanes had a good series against the A's in Texas takes a strike it was 5 for 11 with a couple of home runs off Sanderson and three advanced he was over one with two walks Ciara does not like to steal much short of last year he stole just eight bases year before that 18 he has the ability most definitely to be a 30-30 guy but he chooses not to beat up his body some guys that have good speed just really don't like to steal on Willie Wilson he never he he could have stole 100 a year but he just didn't want to he's hoping this time taken for a strike the throw is not in time very close at second base but john shulock says that jamie quirks throw is late and look at him you can count him he gets about four or five steps again and once a runner gets that he's usually he's gonna be in there safe it was a pretty good he had him right there I think he's out he was a good throw he had him you see Jamie coming up at quick release and he makes a strong throw even though it takes one hop it comes right up into his glove and he had him no doubt and really Sherlock was not a great position to make that call I think he had his mind made up that he was gonna be safe he didn't expect to throw to be right there it's a ball and two strikes on Harold Baines it runs inside let's look at one more angle this is the one that showed me that he was out and he's out he could see the fingers going into the glove the bag was blocked by the glove and that was a blown call Ruben Sierra should have been called out there too - there's that slow curve outside and now he's in a bit of a jam with veins the Rangers taking advantage of the start to Jamie quirk not that he's a poor catcher but he has not started much behind the plate just his fourth start this year as a catcher and they've stolen two bases off with him at the top of the first 3-2 pitch called strike three [Applause] that was a real good fastball right there you see Jamie sitting up on the outside corner and here it is bang right in his glove maybe a little bit off the plate but if the catcher's sitting there and he hits a glove usually it's gonna be called a strike you're saying they're trying to take advantage of Jamie there I don't think it's so much as they're taking advantage of Jamie as they are of Scott that's a little bit slow he's got the big kick to home plate and if you guy gets four or five steps before he releases the ball I don't care if Johnny bench's back there whoever it is he's gonna have to have a bazooka to throw the guy out he's not doing a good job of holding him on and he is an off-speed pitcher but he's throwing more fastballs tonight there's a breaking ball which in Kabylia grounds to Walter Weiss Weiss guns them out and the first inning is done but Julio Franco hits an opposite field two-run home run off of Scott Sanderson and the Rangers scored twice to open up a two nothing lead this program is authorized under television rights granted by the Oakland Athletics it is solely for the entertainment of our audience and any publication reproduction retransmission or other use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of this game without the expressed written consent of the Oakland Athletics baseball company is prohibited and Nolan Ryan who was down the hallway last Wednesday in Arlington as much as five to nothing tonight it's two runs before it even begins his word here's the lineup of Oakland A's he will face gentleman he knows quite well Rickey Henderson it his 5,000 strikeout victim will lead the ballgame off will here and off will bat number two and play at second base Doug Jennings will play first base tonight for Mark McGwire in bat 3 Ron hassey in the lineup again tonight he'll do at number four felix jose out in right field Pat Smith Dave Henderson will bat number six and play in center Jamie quirk the catcher hitting number seven walter white's the shortstop man state and Mike Gallego in his third consecutive start at third base for the ailing Carney Lansford will bat number nine nolan Ryan's numbers are four and three of the knee RA of 5.11 but he was four and OH to one of his best starts ever before suffering the back problems and since that point of his last five starts he is owen thrilly with an ER a of 8.8 six still he has sixty two strikeouts in forty nine and one thirds of sixty-two kazar eight in the American League despite the fact he missed three weeks with the back problems and if he comes out throwing like he did the last time with the same velocity with a two-run lead early in the game this is the kind of guy right here obviously who can slam the door on you in a big hurry anytime you give him a lead as long as he doesn't take too long out on the mound pitch too slowly and he gives us infield a chance to help him he'll do well as long as they get some defense tonight from pete incavilgia who dropped a henderson fly ball wednesday even left Gary Pettis great defender in center Ruben Sierra's in right Steve Buechele Jeff Houston Julio Franco and Rafael Palmeiro around the infield with John Russell a longtime Philadelphia Philly over to the American League this year he's behind the plate catching Nolan Ryan Coleman Ryan is out inspecting the Coliseum out it is not pitched here in a couple of years this is his first appearance this year obviously last year his only start against the A's that was the night that he struck out Ricky Henderson for number 5000 on August the 22nd 3:47 average for ricky is good for third in the American link behind Ozzie Guillen at 352 and ken griffey jr. at 348 Bryan's first pitch fastball right down the pipe this is what like his last start it's kind of hard what to look for if you Ricky last time out he was throwing the ball 93 just the first pitch didn't look like it had near the pop it did last game curveball is taken and he jumps ahead quickly two strikes you have a yellow hammer like that one there it doesn't matter how hard you throw one ball two two strikes Brian went five innings last Wednesday through 113 pitches 71 were strikes gave up four hits two home runs one to Jose Canseco monster 441 foot pralaya stand Dave Henderson jacked out a changeup that ones up in the strike zone and hit up in the air very high Julio Franco and Alex get Houston to shortstop that one had a little more pop on it you could tell by the grunt that he had right there no one's the kind of guy though you don't know what he's gonna throw you as it as a hitter you know you look at this guy and say he's throwing 95 miles an hour and he might drop a Snapdragon on your curveball you just can't believe it because so you can't really look for anything up there last pitch I guess they had timed at 87 miles an hour which is not Nolan Ryan speed but as you were talking with Charlie Huff last week Nolan up until that came Wednesday when he was throwing routinely in the 90s he had been starting off slowly building towards the 90 plus in the high 80s and then eventually by the third or fourth picking up his speed that's a pretty good fastball right there it's down the strike zone a lot of guys do that the great pitchers I always believe that for the first two innings they were hittable then when they get in their groove if they find it it's gonna be very very hard to beat him and knowing if he hits a groove he gets that fastball popping you know it it's very tough to hit him - okay Randolph slaps it back Willie did not play in that ballgame against Ryan in Arlington is dis - for his last 14 5 for his last 27 did make a big defensive play yesterday to start a double play vault on both Jackson which helped settle down Bob Welch the A's won that ballgame three to two and swept Kansas City do you want his fouls back that ball that Jackson hit to him on that double play he didn't catch it it probably would have skipped over the wall that's the only one he hit though it was not a good afternoon for Bo Paul for five with four strikeouts it didn't make pretty solid contact with that bat over his knee though didn't it real good contact 'very ensue but back spasm and Nolan lower back was triggered when he lifts his left leg during his delivery seemed to a little movement there trying to loosen it up he's definitely not throwing as hard as he was the last time we saw him he's in the range right now where he's very hittable Vienna these guys are gonna look at him it's a when you look for something that's gonna be about 94 to 95 and then you get something 86 87 sometimes you really can't pull the trigger on it you follow a lot of pitches off breaks it pitch and Willie is fouling the pitch off at the right side repeatedly that's a good indication when guys aren't really throwing that hard the just hard enough where you can get it you know you can't really get a good piece of it you can make contact but when he's on you know those pitches right there there they have no chance on yeah well they struck out eight times in five innings against this guy last week great so again that was out of the strike zone they're gonna Pele struck out home plate up fire deck eager says that Randolph is out e penalty check the swing but no I'm gonna see this this is a straight change right here something no one's come up with and Willie looks like he goes around on that right there you look at it watch his bat if his wrists go out in front there the end of the bat goes out that's a questionable run right there it's hard to tell he really didn't break his wrist his forearms bent a little bit but he really didn't break his wrist number 5,000 139 for Nolan Ryan duck Jennings hurt and old in Ryan and that ball game wins that's a big reason why tony has in the lineup tonight he slapped a bases-loaded single off of Ryan that's what really hurt him just like that pitch right there Nolan made all these pitches fast balls away throwing hard then he throws an off-speed curveball in the same spot a guy looks out there all day long and then he gets an off-speed pitch he's gonna rack it somewhere Oh what goes up all Ryan said it wasn't a bad pitch but I don't know that kid now that I know him I probably won't throw him another breaking pitch in that situation might have been setting them up good throw the breaking ball right here no telling what strikes out Willie Randolph on a 3-2 straight change I know Willie's in the dugout say you believe this guy challenged somebody there's a good pitch there that's the critics if Nolan Ryan will say man you throw 95 miles an hour why do you enable around so much and not you know some nights you're content to strike people down with a curve but he could just blow it by and every time well he's just been blessed with such good stuff that he wants to use it all and again it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me I didn't have the god-given talent he did but if I had a 95 to 100 mile an hour fastball I wouldn't worry that much about my breaking ball 1 2 pitch well he strikes out the last 2 retires the side in order and it's 2 nothing Texas at the end of 1 Mike Gallego playing over a third base again the night for the injured Carney Lansford before the game Steve had a chance to talk to the gag man I'm standing here with gag man master of all positions you started off the season as a regular second baseman now you're playing everywhere you tonight you're gonna be a third base you've been there the last couple nights what kind of mental preparation preparation do you have to do to get ready for that regular second baseman I seemed like a long time ago didn't it you know I just you know I just have to go out and get my work in and get my ground balls of whatever position I'm playing that day and if I'm not playing I try to make sure I get him at second and I mean I shorten third because those are the least comfortable of the three positions that I play but like I said I just got to stay you know stay within my work habits and try to get as many ground balls as I can and you know get my hacks into when you're over third base is that the hardest for you to play because you almost have to change the way you throw the ball the first base yeah it's the throw it doesn't really bother me as much as just the reaction time over there you know it's it's you can't really get a jump on the ball read the ball off the bat it's just a reaction play over there most of the time and if you catch it you make a great play if you don't it's a base hit so it's it's kind of a nice way to look at things but where as opposed a shortstop you know you really have a lot more time to make an error and it's it's a I think it's more difficult position for me to play when you're starting to season off the second base you're you are struggling a little bit at the plate now that you're moving around a little bit being spot starter here and there your batting average has gone way up do you feel it helps you a little bit to come in and play that way or how do you approach it not at all not at all I think it's just that I'm getting my my timing down at the plate I made a few adjustments at the plate I just feel better at the plate now you know whether I'm playing second base every day or if I'm playing you know the utility role I'd much rather be out there every day no doubt especially when you're swinging the bat well you want to get as many as best as you can but the way things are right now I just got to keep playing the role that they put me in and hopefully get a chance to get out there as often as I can yo llego had an extraordinary sound four series against Kansas City with five hits adada advances averages now up to 218 and when you take you to a company began the year at four for 44 he is hitting nearly 300 since that time again you know batting low in the batting order guys take him for granted you know he's not real tall a big guy and they just want to throw the ball down the middle plate trying to overpower him that's a mistake Scott Sanderson throws one over the head of John Russell and a breaking ball Russell Lou the Rangers catcher starting his third consecutive game as Gino Petrelli the Sacramento native is missing the last few with a muscled phone is Nick go on a strike Russell overall had to get to sixty-seven this year one home run in one RBI and a home run came Saturday in Anaheim his first American League home run the Rangers opening up a 10 game homestand a road trip I should say in Anaheim they won two out of three against the Angels which would seem like no big deal but do you realize that they had lost 12 consecutive series before taking 203 against California they got off to a pretty good start the Rangers eleven and seven but since that point they have lost 26 of their last 39 obviously that's not good it's quite remarkable really they lost 12 Series in a row before that what an animal they've had some injuries to it it's unbelievable to me that they they're they've struggled like they have they have good hitters in the lineup again Sierra's out a little bit and struggling and things like that but they have a lot of talent here they they should be a lot better off than they are at least I think they should here - is fouled off on the first base side Jennings giving chase will not get boys revenue from the Vans a little bundled up tonight 62 degrees at first pitch in watching scout I don't think he feels comfortable with his breaking ball he shook it off a couple times so far he wants to throw a lot of fast balls away another fastball away and it's just a way as decking gear does not give him the call and once again Sanderson goes full and a better see Jamie turn around a little bit there and say something to say hey that's a pretty good pitch if he puts it there again you gotta call that a strike that ball is driven deep to left Ricki is back and watch it go out a line drive shot for John Russell his second American League home run and the second one that Sanderson has given up tonight Rangers taking a three nothing lead another fastball right down the middle of the plate again Scott throws the ball straight over the top and he doesn't get a lot of movement on it here send up away but the ball is right down the middle of the plate and he smokes it this view right here he's got a real good extension and it's on a line and Ricky just looks up and watches it knows what's out from the time it leaves his back seemed like a location problem there clerk was setting up outside for the fastball the same pitch he just missed down he wanted again but Sanders you got it too much down the middle on that situation you don't want to be too perfect you want to catch a little bit more of the play but unfortunately he got it right down the middle and three two a lot of guys can hit those batter now is Steve Buechele he grounds one left side Walter White's the dirt Jennings [Applause] that'll bring on their shortstop and number nine hitter Jeff Houston hitting at 266 he was obtained in early April just before the start of the regular year from the Expos organization for left hand pitcher drew Hall got off to a good start offensively but he is struggling a bit of late 10 for his last 16 his average was at 337 and now it's down to 266 what a and Sanders said it repeatedly is falling behind the thing about it too it's okay to fall behind if you can get your off-speed pitch over but he hasn't gotten it over yet so now that the hitters looking dead fastball three balls and one strike off the top of my head I would say he's thrown 80% fastballs tonight which is really not what Scott would want to do not at all I think he's even throwing more fastballs than that you've got to throw your breaking ball you got to give him something else to look at because if you just know nothing but fast balls and you're not throwing your breaking ball over when you do throw it they're gonna wait for you to throw that fastball [Music] - one pitch misses again three and one and those pictures are pretty close right there and you're not going to get him called the umpire you've been wild you're not throwing a lot of strikes and when you do make a good pitch he's not going to call it for you wallak strike two Sanderson was more of a fastball pitcher when he was younger with the Expos and Cubs then he had the back problem had a disk removed and he's changed his style great soup pitch popped up left side in comes Ricky and he makes the play for out number two [Applause] so after giving up the rocket home bra off the bed of John Russell II is retired - in Rome growing 41 pitches and that's not a good ratio way too many balls and his work just one and two thirds so he's throwing too many pitches and not enough of them are in the strike zone very simply exactly that the quicker you're off the mountain less amount of pitches throw the better you're gonna be on getting misses with the slow curve which is the key to success for Sanderson when he's at his best Kennedy's he's mixing in that slow curve and getting it over for strikes we've said it a bunch of times he's to be effective he's gotta throw a lot of strikes you can say that about anybody but maybe more so in his situation he's up a spot pitcher he has good velocity every now and then he's not a smoker out there he's got to get that breaking ball over one one the other way again for Pettis he is now 2 for 2 twice roping base hits to left field that was a hanging breaking ball right there and even more so now I know what's going through Scott's mind I'm not getting that over I'm you know you just don't want to throw it we throw one up in the strike zone for a ball and then you hang another one yeah you even go back to your fastball a little more even Rafael Palmero flied out to right field his first Advent for for 13 in the series in Texas last weekend the A's won the first two seven two four and five before the Rangers beat the A's last Thursday in the finale two to one Gary Pettis stole second base in the first inning is 20th stolen base of this year and has six in the last four games his second only to Rickey Henderson to the American League Pitcher does not go neighs won a ballgame in Arlington as Wednesday with Tony called a pitch out with Terry Steinbach and Cecil espy a pinch runner they did the night that was the final out of the ballgame that was an amazing call right there it worked out perfectly runners moving pitches up so twice they stalled off a clerk in the first inning but this time he recovers and guns down Gary Pettis you can see Jamie coming up real quick he gets rid of the bomb and it beats him right to the bag and the ball was sailing and luckily into the runner middle of the second three nothing Rangers I'm minding my own business and this guy on the phone is chewing my ear off about how I gotta leave AT&T save big we're better so now I'm wondering what's in a fine print like where do these savings come from if I got a problem with my bill I'd speak to a machine or can I maybe talk to somebody with a pulse but they say switch and say see so I said the guy let's put it in writing right guy says excuse me don't get pressured get the facts you know and I know it's still not 18 P you step to the mound they're expecting his please play but no because you're using max like chocolate who have already added for a perfect life every time that's like for the kids [Music] the excitement of a baseball makes for a great family outing pack up the kids the burgers and the barbecue and join your friends for a baseball bat you say you want homeruns we have it by the trunk for a is baseball is a great patch for the whole family that's a safe bet the first 15,000 kids who see the A's White Sox game Saturday June 23rd receive a Don Russ baseball card album courtesy of leaf candy [Music] the Athletics are happy to announce a new attraction of the Coliseum Foster Farms family places a custom-designed area for youngsters and their parents to go during the ballgame family place features a charger tickets by phone 7 6 - bass area code four one five family places just behind sections 117 and 118 and all children must be accompanied by an adult and vice versa and I want any adults going in there I was in there before the ballgame tonight as a matter of fact check into that it's great what a place to play I mean come down here tomorrow afternoon we're not working so be here as he fouls it off of all on a strike Nolan Ryan has struck out two and his first inning of work and Nolan has been known throughout his career to be a great strikeout pitcher but look at him the last year-plus he's actually getting better last year he struck out 301 and he has led the league at 10 times out of the America to the National whichever one he has been in and led it the last three years one of the reasons his strikeouts have gone up in the last two years he's throwing that changeup a lot more to another pitch they have to look for and it's real tough two balls one strike turn on Hesse green one necie making his fifth consecutive start and sixth and last seven is that called a strike what do they say it's 2 and 2 the count is two balls and two strikes this regard whatever I said before and probably most that I'll say from this point forward but whatever it's 2 & 2 assuming anybody was listening to me before I was listening I caught okay yeah sure you were somebody punched me in the army last year is the sixth time Nolan struck out 300 or more first time in the American League it's been done since 1977 well that's a very nice pitch there to get Ron hassey he has struck out the last three in a row and retired all four he is faced this is the old ringworm changeup right here it just dives down and away in the hitter after looking at his fastball has no chance on that pitch batter is Felix Jose the number five slot of the order playing at right field for the injured Canseco doing a fine job of it at a pretty good series against the Royals 3 for 11 with three hits the last two ballgames they did not play against Nolan Ryan in Texas last Wednesday or on a strike to Felix Jose think about Ryan he's just learned that changeup imagine the guts of the pitching coach to come up there nolan ryan 5,000 strikeouts was hey Nolan I'd like for you I think we ought to work on this pitch right here and he gets that one down perfect two balls of the strength now the curveball also he throws masterfully and he keeps himself just an impeccable physical condition which has allowed him to preserve that 90 plus fastball he has lost a few miles an hour probably and we no longer throws 98 now since 94 95 95 what do you do yeah yeah Nolan you just doesn't throw like he used to still gassing it up there you blink your eyes it's gone due to pitch right side Julio Franco Jose does not strike out which is an accomplishment for the first floor did that Bryant is not permitted a ball out of the infield yet he's retired the first five here's Dave Henderson who saw a Nolan Ryan changeup and blasted it over the left centerfield wall in Arlington you almost had to know that breaking ball was coming right there Hindi was sitting there to watch it too he also fired one over Hindus head the last game after he hit a home run one Oh played by Jeff Houston so two consecutive three up and three down for Ryan he sprinkled in three strikeouts in the A's had built against the Texas treasure we played twofold he leads the A's three zip [Music] [Applause] Sports channel America turns up the heat this summer with exciting sports the full boxing tour is in code four one five extension 1031 you never know someone's life may depend on it it's not sanderson goes to work and his third inning the first two have not gone smoothly giving up a running in each of the first two two in the first and one in the second and all three scoring on home runs Rafael Palmero weights on one it lines it where Toby hair has to jump out of the lane the first place nice nice backhand play there Palmeiro was betting when Gary Pettis was tossed out trying to steal the second base of the night at second by Jamie quirk three of the five hits against the A's for the point it's and that last ball game against Mike Moore when he homered grounds one to judge Jennings number one that's a good slow curve right there that's what he needs to do he's got to establish that breaking ball again sometimes when it's not working it's hard to do but you have to do it to be successful little Franco with a two-run homer his first time up to right-center there's the slow curve take it for a strike he's held him down in Texas Bronco does 1 for 13 but last year he at 4:38 against the AA's Oh do Franco going 14 Ford 32 you don't see too many second baseman hitting number three in a betting order but this guy really can swing the bet that's for sure not just watching his hands when he stands up there if he can get a good shot of his hands you don't see too many guys that hold the bat that far down he's only got two fingers in his left hand on the bat the bottom two or below the knob and I don't see how he could even hold on to it right there put down on the slow curve that's something John Mayberry with the Blue Jays and later on with the Royals in fact he's hitting coach the rose we saw him this weekend he did that as a hitter he held the the last pinky but you know he saw I had only two I think he has both fingers off the table he's got both fingers off I know Johnny Bench used to do that too it just seems to me that you'd have better bat control the more fingers you would have on there but I know a lot of guys like to drop that finger off big guys get you a little bit better bat speed you can throw that head out there but just feels like with only two fingers on there breaking ball you could fire your bat up in the stands and kill somebody it gives you a lot more whipping motion there's an ordinary unorthodox stance all the way around with that level bat filed off and the count remains a ball and two strikes on Julio Franco to hand play tremendous play we saw I got yesterday make a one hand snag on a home run Danny turn double the Tartabull applies today yesterday one of the guns lasted one out of here on Friday night has reached up and after his beverage completely still did spill a drop they declined fortunate today we went to the hospital had an x-ray it was cool got a ball bobby was $4,000 worth of medical or that guy he was California cool man he'd never even flinched must be an old ballplayer they don't get hurt they don't show pain until after the game he was a hero in his world that night he was my hero that night he made a great play to to incite rap to Willie Randolph Franco and Scott Sanderson gets the first two outs of the third we are in Oakland California watching the A's and the Rangers Hayes beat this club 8 of 13 times last year and the year before they won two out of three in Texas last week flying the first of three tonight this week we'll have day games tomorrow and Wednesday both 1215 first pitches Ruben Sierra watch time see right there Jamie quirk wants him to throw us straight change to when they wiggle their fingers like that it's usually for a straight change and again Scott doesn't feel comfortable that he's just starting to getting in the groove with his curveball that must be a horrible feeling to go out there with less than your best muffin just try to wiggle your way through it somehow and develop it but the curveball is working better and better as he goes early on he was getting a little success with it not throwing it for strikes throwing it very infrequently but now he's mixing it every now and then and getting some strikes well again that's the key to success as it takes you a few innings sometimes to get your rhythm out there and find out what's working for you you have a you're smart enough to know that it's going to come around eventually that's what that curveball does you throw the slow curveball and then he pulled a foul now you throw a fastball down the middle of the plate he swings right through it because he's not sure what you're gonna throw him if you're throwing all your curveballs are throwing a lot of fast balls for balls and he knows you're not gonna bring that breaking ball but if you mix it in you just can't sit on one pitch I was called to Cannes if you're watching it for the first time he is a very slow worker to say the least in fact when he and Ryan hooked up last week the ballgame went three hours and 50 minutes Ryan is also a slow worker was working even slower than usual as he was battling back from injury days were getting all over this guy in the clubhouse after the game Dave Henderson said I didn't know we had a rain delay tonight was when we're doing that there's alone roving Sierra clips one down the line and left guy Angola long run put it away I was a turkey in that booth me right now would have been well done with the temperature it was hot we lost about 30 degrees from last week to this series we began this ball game at 62 we began the games in Texas every night in the middle 90s the lowest it would go was 88 moving Sierra hits one up for the aforementioned Dave Henderson he does what Marc fitt --which talking the ball into his glove to end the third one two three third for Scott Sanderson in the middle of the third he trails three nothing if you are concerned about getting rid of weeds this way try a better way hi I'm Jim Martindale and I'd like to introduce you to another great gardening now we all reiterate that his fan club about in center or right where do they are Jose still in Children's Hospital over in San Francisco intermittently in traction baby park hits one solidly to Center but Gary Pettis hardly has to move he's a great defender Pettis that was the first ball that was really tagged off of Nolan Ryan first ball that has left the infield but no one has sat down the first 70 novel worked to Walter Weiss having a tremendous offensive year he had 300 in April to 74 in Maine the average is climbing still in June 2 4 3 yesterday that's one of those pitches right there a guy like Nolan Ryland usually gets basketballs right at the knees when the kitchens love doesn't move they usually call him but not tonight soon Oh Nolan to me physically looks so much better than he did in Arlington last week he was really took an extraordinarily long time between pitches to ease the pain of the back he walked around repeatedly around the mound he seemed to rest his hands in a unusual pose on his hips um I have not seen before but apparently the Ranger people say does it quite frequently but it just did not look like the Nolan Ryan I'm used to seeing that day talk to their trainer Danny weep you said he always when he bends over in a stretchy ice bends out loud nothing unusual well he's not doing it tonight one time but I know this is really not too much check our source there at three o pitch is a strike well no it's perfect game is not a possibility this is just all power right here a lot of guys think you throw from up top and your arm but look at these legs exceptionally strong and great drive not a real big guy but boy I'll tell you what he is some kind of strong six to 210 pounds did not like to release the pitch was not close to being a strike Mike guy a go its Nolan Ryan the other hidden to advanced scored a run swinging the bat very well second at-bat against Nolan the other night he threw nothing but curveballs schooling right out of here Dave Henderson was so way afraid a mic guy Ingo told him nothing throwing you nothing the curveballs I was hoping and praying he throw me some curveballs again well he's in the stretch he bends down they're pretty low we thought he goes there he goes we thought he was trying to stretch out his back but they'd say that's just the way he goes into looking to get the signs that's obviously something he does in the stretch with runners on base that he does not do well ice is moving pitch inside curveball [Applause] throat was a little bit high Walt got it in underneath the tag again a lot of people like to run on Nolan he's a little slow here's the jump he gets about two or three steps not a real big jump but the throw was up and he was able to slide in under it he received the throw Russell gets up quick just a little behind it's in there clean Walter stole six bases last year in the 84 he played he is already five for five this year as the off-speed pitch sails and Ryan is not nearly as impeccable in the third that he wasn't the first to be retired the first seven Athletics the walk to Weiss the stolen base and now he's to one one on Mike Gallego the bottom of the order creeping up once again second straight day - a - sometimes you wonder I wonder how he can pitch he has such good stuff you know like what pitch do you want to throw here that'd be kind of tough for me I didn't want to have to really think out there I just wanted to get the ball and throw it reaching out he grounds one for Jef Hewson Walter Weiss has no shot to go anywhere he stays at second base and it'll bring up Ricky Henderson but you we're healthy and had that great deal with how fast would you pop a fastball at 92 to 94 95 well that's good enough get it worked man it worked sometimes at work at 81 it worked well enough to win you the ER a championship and then his second karate figures of the saw young voting Barbie the pitches down off the wall it's been fortunate that you ran into the strike he would have went 20 that year for either way well I'd like to think I would have well you never know what would happen I had it probably a pretty good chance Adam missed 10 starts no no - Ricky Bahl strike 1 2 outs bottom of the 3rd the win in the ER a title I was able to get on a bubblegum cart with Nolan Ryan it's worth about eight dollars now but his sides worth $7.50 years is worth the chewing gift chewing gum came on my side of the package into a stale in his career is 120 only a few times only plated the One World Series in 1969 but you know he is the yardstick that everybody uses to describe a pitcher a young guy that can throw he'll be the next Nolan Ryan which is great you know guy throw his gas but he's not a whole lot of games above 500 know the one pitch here's a good one called strike to Ryan Anders play tonight 7 away from 300 wins 293 but 265 losses I mean the guy's gonna win 300 games with his stuff ok that's routine that's a given almost but to lose the 300 games are close to it with that kind of stuff it's it's amazing that's what boggles my mind told talking to Connie about that how's this guy ever lose e schemes to - Ricky fish jet Palmeiro is giving a hard run at up at at Lance phone that's a great swing right there by Ricky that's the old emergency swing right there you're looking for the fastball and see that curveball coming down in it's like oh whoops just fight it off riki popped to short his first time up he is putting a nine-game hitting streak on the line tonight against Nolan Ryan Ricky had the exaggerated stance last time real open against Nolan got a little bit not still opened up a little bit trying to help him pick up the ball a little bit 2 2 pitch struck him on again Ricky was over 2 against melded last week with a walk and a strikeout bride has now struck out 4 & 2 3 he leads 3 nothing Bobby Valentine of his fifth year managing the Rangers he spoke to Steve McCatty before the ballgame I'm here with the skipper for the Texas Ranger Bob u Valentine yes Bobby the last time the age were in Texas the owners for the Rangers also had a big meeting there were they able to squelch some of the rumors you were hearing in the paper I didn't read any of the papers it's a truth with team goes bad you don't read the papers that's rule number one and we had just had a great meeting you know we are all new owners there one year in they want to know what's going on I think I gave him the answers to what was going on and things going pretty good right now you got a tremendously talented ballclub everybody expected you to be a lot higher in the standings now any particular reason why you've been struggling a little bit yeah matter of fact not many people expected us to be much higher we were picked to be fourth by most of the experts and we're approaching fourth right now and I think we'll even be better than that as the season goes on we're getting a little healthier right now and start and play together and I like that you've also got one of the minor leagues that's been voted the best minor league in baseball any young talent we might see during the rest of the year well you know most our young talents in a ball on double-a and rookie ball and triple A's real thin I think we've called up just about everything we can except for a kid named Juan Gonzalez and before the years over we might say him he's an outfielder very talented 21 years old he has power he has speed you know good defense all that stuff and I haven't seen him that much I've heard about him and I'm looking forward to see him on Gonzalez Gonzalez is a centerfielder playing in their minor league system that are very high on him they have a couple of good young prospects at third base Dean Palmer and Scott colbaugh who could eventually replace Steve who shell but do you mean to tell me that he does not read the newspaper is he kidding well when they're talking about you as bad as they were talking about him I don't think I'd read it either I would get rid of the TV's radios ride my bike to the ballpark that's tough I find that hard to believe that you could really take yourself out of it that much but Bobby Valentine apparently is going to ride out this storm he is very tight with the general manager in Texas Tom Green Errol Bane's takes ball one to open up the port the Rangers leading three to nothing Harold Baines struck out looking his first Advent in here he slaps his single the other way Erol got a fastball up out over the plate and this went with it hint hint given up by Scott tonight and four of the five have gone the other way three slap singles the other way Julio Franco's home run went the other way only guy that pull the ball was John Russell who pulled it right over the wall in left he hit a rope for a home run they didn't give Illya it's it straight up Walter Weiss waiting in Cavill you may not want to buy a newspaper he has been the subject of many a trade rumored and the hottest one lately has them going to the Yankees possibly for some relief pitcher Greg Cantor a the former Rays been mentioned as the Rangers are really having trouble to the bullpen that would probably be a good trade for them he's struggled down there and he's not what you call it great outfielder he works hard at it but to get a left-hander can erase real tough he throws the ball extremely well now that might be a very good trait for you know hustle takes the strike I should be mentioned his first career home run against the hazing him at his first career at-bat against the A's Sanders Fenton has thrown 64 and Ryan 40 sinks Sanderson through three and one-third Ryan through three and he has not had good control those numbers one award the John Russell Russell was a round one pick number 13 overall in June of 79 of the Phillies organization spent seven years there parts of the last five in Philadelphia before being sold to at the lanza before last season and he had an awful year with the Braves breaking ball is in there also began the year in Triple Aim of the Rangers he went to Oklahoma City which as the child where he was born he attend to the University of Oklahoma and they called him up and middle May the Sanderson's ahead wanted to and he goes for the knock out with the the slop dropped the slow curve that's Becky's slop drop the aect man he's got him all he's got a lot of sins I like that it's a character they really should issue his own dictionary it would be funny but nobody wouldn't but nobody's talking about probably have to explain it and sell a translator to go along with it could have to hire mr. Webster to put it things we understand but it'd be funny to to is into the air in deep right-center Dave Henderson appears to have a beard yes he does as you often hear the ball does not carry as well to right field in this ballpark as it does to left field here's Hindu just yelling all the time having fun out there that's the way you got to approach him like that a little bit of a hot dog out there but he makes the play you gotta like that you got to put a microphone on him one now get a little wireless mic out there and what it is he is saying Steve who shell first pitch last at-bat he bounced to short two outs now the curveball is getting progressively better God Sanderson is now finding it the problem with Scott Kent is that he doesn't have long to find it because he is not the kind of guy he will give you more than six innings well I think he can but Tony doesn't use him that way now a go across the diamond and he forces out Harold Baines at second base so after giving up three runs the first two innings Scott Sanderson gives up not the next two but he still trails nolan ryan three nothing [Music] it's our game we love to see it share it and talk about it the new AT&T Universal card helps make it all possible now I know that you guys can make this dream a reality for me it's Visa or MasterCard and the power of AT&T the AT&T Universal card one world one card there are a few things in life that provides such a thrill that when you acquire them you've come to know the true meaning of pleasure in sound and picture the feeling is yours alone bang and olufsen [Music] well thanks to the rather thoughtful folks from Clorox everybody on the bleachers will be sitting more comfortably these days they're going to issue those new Clorox bleach your back risks only cost you eight dollars you can rent one and all proceeds will be handed over to the aged community fund good idea those bleachers were put to use this weekend when the A's sold the Coliseum out three consecutive days against the Royals drawing 130 1637 that is the third highest total of all time for three ball games A's have a shot to go over 1 billion on this homestand with 26 dates there of 930 2294 it's amazing 79 we drew 300,000 for the whole year well it's unbelievable the job they've done here woody ragout mono pitch wakes through it well Dave new house this morning the old contributor the nice article he spoke to Sal bando who dug this place the Oakland mausoleum hard to believe that those great clubs they just would not draw people to watch that play here but the previous administration did not put that as a top priority oh and you sign on a radio station it has like 14 watts you know not too many people here I can't say enough about what the hospital has done bringing in Andy Daleks with all the marketing David Rubenstein all these people they've done a great job and they've done a good job for the community great job they've created fan interest that's what you have to do you want pitch two and two on Randolph leading off the fourth eh trailing three nothing and everywhere you go around baseball the A's along with the Dodgers and a few other organizations are when people are comparing themselves to we want to be like the AIDS solid foundation from the top all the way to the bottom he's hoping to draw three million this year - to pitch just outside Nolan Ryan has walked just one is permitted just one baserunner he walked Walter Weiss Willie Randolph slams that fastball deep to left center but his run down by in camellia [Applause] Nolan's not real happy with that pitch right there you know he put it right down the middle of the plate here's a swing fastball right down the middle of the plate Willie got all of it in Kabylia went back made a good running catch Minka Vilia was referred to as they brought his soros with a baseball glove by David Bush after dropping that fly ball off Ricky now I'm gonna check the ball here hold on here they are not looking at the ball in Bobby Valentine defendant look at the baseball to see if he's doing anything to it or what are they doing here by the van inside is out I thought Nolan wasn't mad about the pitch where was maybe he pulled something in his back right there they've gone out to talk to him I don't know they were examining the ball a little bit home plate umpire Don deccan gearing down inside immediately came out the last pitch was a straight fastball so have to wonder Nolan did not appear to physically go to his back did he no I was just thinking when he was rubbing the ball but then they didn't really check him so apparently they weren't looking at the ball right there first pitch outside to dunk Jennings I've not heard that Nolan is a a doctor of the baseball is that Durbin accused before I don't know as hard as he throws be doctors it it could kill somebody if they hit us up here could take off it look like a frisbee going into home plate he might now I don't know I don't think so I've never heard that but you get away with it you get a cut ball out there you might as well take it and use it to your advantage doc Jennings with a good hack their fouls it off a ball and a strike Jennings is starting his fourth game since coming up from Tacoma this is his first at first base he started twice previously at the d8 spot and once in left-field for Ricky Henderson tonight he gives Mark McGwire arrests but also you have to figure part of the philosophy was the fact that Mark McGwire was all for three against Nolan Ryan with three strikeouts last week although duck Jennings is all for two with two strikeouts tonight it's gonna say mark - struck out three times but his replacements not doing a whole well tonight - it's just a fastball right here some gas he swings right through that pitch he was under the little bit he's a little surprised that he didn't get it Nolan's not really throwing hard maybe the guys were looking for a little more than they're getting that can throw you off because if you're looking for a pitch around 95 and you get 186 that'll really throw you off your way out in front of the ball Ron hassey did not play in the ball game against Nolan unless Wednesday his first at-bat tonight he struck out Brian with five strikeouts through his first three and two thirds he struck out three in a row last two out to the first the first of the second Ron hassey to Gary Pettis who hardly asked to move a muscle to put it away and two for the A's do not have a base set off of Nolan Ryan and they trail by score of three to nothing and why we have a break between innings let's check out some of the great plays of around Major League Baseball the last couple of years [Music] breck pop when Steve McCatty back with you in Oakland with the age of trailing Nolan Ryan three to nothing through four in it here is Nolan Ryan being called in by home plate umpire Don decking gear after that fastball that Willie Randolph smoked in it Bobby Valentine immediately comes flying out of the Ranger dugout his decking gear wants to look at the baseball and the thing that is somewhat confusing in this is that the last pitch that Ryan threw was one of his fast balls that what he Randolph hit pretty solidly Oh also the ball never came back into the umpire to look at it there must have been somebody from the bench yelling and screaming at him right there a lot of times again a baseball will look just like a golf ball when unit square with a golf club you get some ripples through it on a lot of golf ball baseball will have the same effect but he didn't even look at the balls this may be somebody from the side screaming at him so what you're saying is they weren't checking Ryan for doctoring it's simply there was a fastball that really Randolph really put a hurt on let's see if the balls located stay in play they might have been saying take a look at it because they thought the ball has too much movement on it but if he did find it it could be from the bat Hewson showing bunt takes strike one from Scott Sanderson Sanderson's struggling early first two innings he gave up three runs but since that point is retired six of the last seven Harold Baines a leadoff single to the fourth when he was left stranded the slop drop is hit over the head of Walter wines sort of a scent that was a good piece of hitting right there you just stayed back on the break I'll look for it when you see me if you're waiting for looking for it you just stay back a little longer you get it it's a fairly easy to hit a if it's the slow rolling it's the sharp one is still tough top of the order and Gary Pettis who has two of the six hits off of Sanderson both the other way and five of the six since office God have gone the other way as the Rangers doing a good job is staying back on the off-speed pitch just serving it where it is pinched buried a buddy pops it up this is a good scenario for Bobby Valentine do get expressive he can do a lot of different things here let his speed Jeff Houston speed they have been interchangeable all year long as far as the top of the order the bottom of the order that's a kind of a tough situation though to put a hit and run on maybe a straight steal or whatever because he doesn't make a lot of contact he strikes out so much that he could do it but he's taking a big chance of getting thrown out at second base that has struck out a hundred and six times a year ago to lead the Detroit Tigers Matthewson with some big steel totals in the minor leagues [Music] no one pitch squares the bunt take strike two so Scot helps out his cause getting two quick ones on Gary Pettis third-base coach flashing the signs Dave Oliver you would think that one option has been taken away but and he does bunt forget I said it Beck swing and a Miss he called it Kent Menace strikes out he's not a good hit and run guy he just has too many holes in his swing to the slow breaking ball and he really has no chance on 2nd strikeout of the evening for Scott Sanderson Rafael Palmeiro go for 2 flied to right grounded out to Doug Jennings over at first base now this is if you want to put something there now now this is a good guy to do it he doesn't strike out very much good bad control [Applause] Rafael Palmero was a line drive hitter but he is struggling with is the batting average versus the home run ball he hit over 300 a couple of years ago 307 if in his second in the National League when he do a member of the Cubs but he was often criticized for not hitting more home runs at Wrigley Field and last year he got off to a good start with this club was at 361 in late May to lead the American League in his first year the Rangers then he tried to hit more home runs at his average fell apart II know there's nothing worse than getting a guy that hits a lot of line drives and tell him gee you know you're hitting 340 but I'm not satisfied you know I want you to hit me some dingers and the next thing you know he's hitting 225 and then they go back think you got to get that old stroke back yeah hit 300 home run hitters hit home runs yes guys and hit for average hit for average you're lucky if you have one that's combined let the guys you know do what they can do best and leave them alone you just end up messing up their minds one always rope but foul does he got that bat head out in front of the breaking ball it's a ball to strength well the thing is you need both I mean you need guys to get on base hit for the high average and you also need guys did it homeruns same thing was said about Wade Boggs and still is said about Wade Boggs they'd like him to turn to the ball more in Jack a few more out of Fenway Park but Wade has stayed with what he knows and that's hitting 330 every single year and 200 base hits I think I'd leave him alone look like Houston wanted to go there he is leaning a little bit now known as a ball and a strike on Palmeiro it is the top of the fifth inning Rangers leading three nothing Houston last year at triple-a Indianapolis and the Expos chain stole 30 bases just 102 to fall games we're gonna get a pitch out right here you can see they lookin for him to run right now work up on his toes pitch is up two balls and a strike bad guess let's just shows you how much the game has changed that's all they saw the full fist down there changing them you have to go down and talk to dunk I'll be back well if lately if you could steal it from up here they probably made a bit of trouble I'm watching on the camera here he's poised and ready Houston is going pitch out they called it perks throw is right there and they nail him good time they must have heard me down in the booth down and down the locker room sent some down to Tony is a good pitch out right there nice and high for work to hold on to it here you see you see Jamie coming out right up by the mask one-step bang right down the second base and had him by a long ways he never even made it he's still not safe so they stole two on Jamie quirk in the top of the first Pettis and Ruben Sierra but then he is thrown out to Venice and now Jeff Hewson count is three balls and a strike two outs on Palmeiro work setting up outside the pitch goes high and outside and sanderson has another base runner to worry about Palmeiro takes his spot over first base Oh second walk issued by Scott Sanderson along with two strikeouts it all he'll work to the guy that has done the most damage to him Julio Franco in his first at-bat in a 3-1 pitch Franco drove one out to right-center good for two RBIs he has five homers and 27 RBIs this year now perv just misses and his second at-bat Franco grounded optimally Randall you're missing with a curveball suno Willie Oh Franco last year as first with Texas was an all-star hitting 316 highest average by an American League second baseman since Lou Whitaker at 320 in 1983 Erick drives one deep to left Ricky will watch it go and Julio Franco has hit two home runs tonight both to run shots the Rangers lead five to nothing and in the spirit of the glitchers they throw it back to old count he's looking for a fastball right down the middle of the plate and when he got it he knew what to do with it it's right there he's looking the looking to pull this ball all the way fastball and he got it made no mistake that's a good hitter look at the fans up there good catch I don't want it Julio Franco drives one five-nothing third home run given up by Sanderson now he works to Ruben Sierra Sanders in with the three tonight has now given up eight home runs this year something that he is vulnerable with they gave up 16 a year ago in under 150 innings of work Paul has fouled off third base side ball and a strike on Ruben Sierra that is the first multihomer game for Julio Franco he now has six home runs Mike Norris loosened in the athletic bullpen Mike is normally the choice when Tony needs a long reliever which has not been often Sierra Beck's ow Norris has not pitched in to the Kansas City Series at Kansas City June the second which was Saturday there's one smoked up the middle a base hit for Ruben Sierra takes the turn but Dave Henderson throws in now Scott Sanderson was in the process of writing himself after a rough start he had a very effective the third and fourth thanks to a toss out of Jeff Hugh sania the first two options bid nobody on base but then they walked Palmeiro and he fell behind Franco again at Franco's first home run a 3-1 pitch that one a 2o pitch and now he's down 5 to nothing and working into Harold things think about it - is it he's struggling a little bit and he's takes Norse a little bit longer to get loose down the bullpen and he's got a banner or two to face yet you want to stay in this game you want to get this guy out right here when I'll pitch to panes called strike he struck out looking Harold Baines his first at-bat singled either way in the fourth I think either way Sanderson may be leaving after this inning it's a good possibility he's struggling a little bit now it's a chance to give more submitting all disrupt foul hit hard bending back into the seats ball in two strikes on Harold Baines who Tony LaRussa before the ball game was chatting with around the cage they spent a long time together last nine and a half years Baines was a white sock before being dealt in late July four-time all-star the last five a very popular player at Comiskey Park since being obtained by Texas is run production has fallen off dramatically he has 24 RBIs coming into the ballgame tonight Rangers playing their 58th game two and two on veins with Ruben Sierra delivered first base sierra ditch steal a base earlier in the game there's one a slop trough gets in there and bites hard to get veins veins has struck out looking twice in the ballgame but Franco goes deep again two more runs score and it's now five nothing in the middle of the pit the Athletics have received in peccable starting pitching the whole homestand first Kirk Young then Dave Stewart in yesterday Bob Welch after a rough start but tonight it is not a good outing so far and may be done for Scott Sanderson Greg poppin Steve McCatty back with you and they got off to a horrible start the curveball was not going over for him but then he got himself going and he fell behind Franco for a second time and Franco jacked his check it out of the night that's that's exactly what happened he's had bad location on his breaking ball and he tried to throw a lot of fast balls and when you get behind good hitter should be come in with a fastball they're gonna hit it and that's what they've done tonight again we've talked about it when Scott has his promises when he's walking people in not having his good control and that's what's happened tonight so the direct opposite has happened since Sanderson battled Nolan Ryan last Wednesday in Arlington it was Ryan who was behind five nothing and now it is Scott Sanderson is behind five nothing and Nolan Ryan is tough almost always but he is so tough when he has this kind of lead down he isn't the thing tonight he's not just throwing the ball he doesn't have the great velocity tonight but he's hitting all the spots he's making the good pitches when he has to and this is what a pitcher is you know he doesn't have his great stuff and he's right there Nolan Ryan throughout his career has tossed five no-hitters has given up zero hits through the first four innings of work Felix Jose will lead it off the bottom of the pin that Jose first ball swinging fouls it off Bozek grounded out to the here know so far the ball game along with Ryan Julio Franco at second base [Music] or one pitch Oh strike two we have periodically peeked down behind the plate they check out the jugs gun reading of the Scouts down there and they have read I think 95 has been the highest on Ryan with a fastball we'll find keep you abreast of that that one is pretty close another cave for the all-time leader Nolan Ryan now has six strikeouts tonight we're just talking about some high-octane good gas fastball right down the middle and you can't catch up to it Dave Henderson grounded to short his first at-bat Ryan has not beaten the Athletics since 1979 brought his career he is only 10 for 15 losing his last three appearances they were speculating and the papers after his last started dennis is ryan completely back he looks pretty good tonight I think if he's not completely back I don't want to see him when he is a 3/4 Ryan is alone sometimes a lot better than a hundred percent other guys that's what he said it coming back he said you know I know I'm not fully recovered I expect it to be they are talking about the pain the rest of the year but it's a matter of coping with it and counting on it not getting any worse than I'm prepared to do that you suggest a piece on the o2 and that's certainly a credit to this man at age 43 pitching for the ballclub that is 15 games behind that the Athletics and looking at a contract next year if he decides to come back and play at age 44 that will pay him 3.3 million dollars to risk further injury in the back and maybe not getting that huge payday pretty good compliment I understand just a piece of game by those guys at stud I'm telling ya either you walk out there and you watch him in he's out there all the time he's a great competitor going out there and pitching with pain is very tough to do look at him he's 95 s only the highest he's hit so far it just tells you something about his makeup no.2 again Hindu and he strikes him out but now he's cooking he has struck out three of the last four and seven tonight power against power right here fastball down the middle of play looks like they're swinging through the pitch more times than he's blown at by him but he's getting him out maybe quark is Oh for 2 against range what do you mean he's swinging through the pitch you just swinging right through you're not making contact you're not you're right on the pitch you've just missing it you just swing right through it you can't believe it so you haven't timed out you're just missing the bone you just missing the ball get down it technically I don't think you can swing through it but that they have good swings are just not making contact [Applause] go on a strike on Jamie quirk Jamie made solid contact he roped one to center but Gary Pettis was there to make the play easily what were you standing 1-1 pitch [Applause] well he is one strike away from striking out the Sun [Applause] [Applause] and the crowd here is actual they're doing the wave eight or not up getting excited about Ryan's performance although you certainly could he strikes out the side and lates five nothing through five and sorry continuing their home success after winning six in a row they won tonight fading Atlanta eights at three they win three out of four in Atlanta I've not won nine out of ten and now they're off to San Diego for games tomorrow Wednesday and Thursday in a sports channel we'll be there on Wednesday from Jack Murphy Stadium it's seven o'clock Trevor Wilson will make the start our project Craig's bullpen against the Padres and our next broadcast involving the Athletics will be for the next homestand after the a s go off on the road or Chicago in Detroit seven games for in Chicago and three in Detroit they'll get a return home on June 22nd to take on the White Sox yeah we'll be there Scott Sanderson will begin to work in the top of the sixth with Michael Norris still throwing Sanderson will pinch defeat in Cavill yeah the Ranger of leftfielder curveball misses made the statement last inning that that might be Scott's last appearance and give North some innings ition turn that around you want if Norse comes in it's to stop them right away because Nolan five nothing lead you know if they can get to the bullpen they still have a chance but they're not giving up on this game makes it sound like I think they're giving up but they're not they wanted North to get some innings they need to be out there right now 1o pitch pops it with a fastball me tink of Ilias over to rounding to short and popping out to shortstop Walter once he leads the ball club at home runs with 10 31 RBIs it's one right side and Felix Jose puts it away [Music] [Applause] Minka Villa is all for three tonight and the batter is John Russell was hitting one of the three home runs off of Scott Sanderson Russell drove one out on a line to left his first time up then he flied out to right in the fourth his home run came leading off the second and gave the Rangers a three nothing late Walter Weiss across the diamond since that play so and we'll check out his footwork is he makes the second out it just makes it look routine it's not a routine play this over there flips it across the diamond it's the kind of guy you don't realize you know he's good but you don't realize how good he is because he makes a lot of plays look routine Steve Buechele Oh for two bouncing too short bouncing to third we talked about the adversity that Texas is had this year with injuries Jeff Russell they're closer Ayelet the America bleed saved last year with 38 is out arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow this guy Steve who shall was out for a long period of time he missed 29 games and after breaking a right wrist when he was hit by a pitch from Eric plunk and the Rangers were 12 and 17 without who shallow third base and he is really not conformed well since coming back he's hitting under 200 of 198 coming into this ant-man he's now 4 for his last 23 and make it form for his last 24 on the check swing is retired this one were set to hang out Scott Sanderson he battles back he goes 1 2 3 in the top of the 6a trails Nolan Ryan 5 to nothing just for other games in the American League on this Monday night Tom Brookins a single in the 12th brings home the gamer and then duck Jones goes out and gets his 20th save to tie Eckersley and Nick Spain for the American League lead as Cleveland cools off the Red Sox some more the Blue Jays had won four straight the Brewers at lost 14 of 18 but Greg pawned goes 3 / 4 with an RBI on a steel Danny sax saved to the 11th and they went at 4 to 1 Chicago they have won three in a row Carlton Fisk a solo home run his fit Milito Perez versus former a Matt young in that ballgame and the Kansas City Royals pitching Tom Flash Gordon against Bert Blyleven trailing his Dave Winfield hit another home run that's his eighth of the season Winfield has really been a tremendous sparkplug for the angels they're playing extremely well that have all occurred right after they made the deal to get him from the Yankees we were in New York had a chance to watch him take BP when he was really struggling they didn't want him to play he was hitting the ball exceptionally hard when we had a chance to look at him and guy can still play Nolan Ryan to Walter White's Walter Weiss is the only athletic to reach base tonight Nolan Ryan through five he drew a one-out walk in the third stole a base but was left stranded and now he's down no balls and two strikes [Applause] Ryan has struck out eight tonight all swinging bringing his total to 5,000 146 [Applause] his left Steve Carlton in the test he was at 41:36 Carleton when he retired when they used to go back and forth daily and one guy would top the other that he is pulling away 1 2 pitch [Applause] and there's another number 9 tonight five thousand one hundred and forty seven breaking ball right here Walton sees fastball and ghost tries to hold up get the side view on it he looks like he went around Walt's not real happy right they're very close but was called out the last four athletics to come up in five of the last six if struck out against Nolan Ryan Mike Gallego takes it in tight when Nolan Ryan has done some incredible things in his brilliant career it is very early but you may be on to some more greatness tonight you know about the five no-hitters he is throwing the most in the history of the majors he has also thrown 12 one hitters in fact he threw one early this year against the Chicago White Sox the ball game he struck out 16 in the one hit off the bat of Ron Kittel should have been caught walnut two strikes on Gallego Rafael Palmero admitted that he should have caught the ball he went back in a little blooper over his sanity stumbled couldn't get to it one two pitch all Nolan's curveballs have been up in it unless I ran the dirt they've been up in a strike zone that could be trouble for him true to its way is the overthrows the fence ball where that ball just just really took off there and had a lot of velocity on it it's the contra you call a fastball you know might be up in a strike zone and then you still can't draw a leather on it some rushing up some gas up there Michael a go did make contact his first at-bat he grounded out to short great to pinch a walk some mica a go is the A's second base runner of the ball game through five and one third both Onvia walks and here's Ricky there was old for two tonight he popped his short and he struck out [Applause] [Applause] he popped that one a little bit that was middle 90s he had some paint on it to write on the corner you on-deck-circle you see the guy in front of you it's two balls up over his head and you go up there and bang 93 right on the black the ball has gotten away in the Athletics bullpen where Norris is loosening in kabylia throws it in the crowd he's a Bay Area native of sorts growing up in Pebble Beach you may wonder one for office later on getting a few votes [Applause] like one pitch we're going to strength [Applause] see Palmero really coming off the bag hard he's trying to block anything get a good jump he's holding a baserunner on he wants to get over and cover as much ground as he can and try and save it anything hit on the infield his way over to the right of that cut right there was kind unusual for a first baseman see a no-no going on out there they want to do everything they can they don't want to be the guy that cost him the no-hitter driven in the air to Center but Gary Pettis runs it down ball was hit but it hung up for Pettis one of the fastest center fielders in all of baseball anytime of all his hits oddly tonight to get yourself excited but this ball really was medicine - the whole way yeah was Ricky got it off the end of the bat right there and pedis being as fast as he is he almost boxed it up right there he's trying to get to it so quick ball goes up in the outfield isn't this bad guys got a good chance of catching it Willie Randolph struck out hit one hard but incue billion ran it down on a 3-2 his last at-bat the Athletics have not even come close to Abby said no one is had to make a difficult play behind Nolan Ryan right now we are in the bottom of the six there at Oakland Rangers five runs eight hits three of which home runs two by Julio Franco vote to run blows one by John Russell the A's have nothing on nothing only two walks is all so Nolan has given up so far here he goes again jumping and had two strikes he is struck out nine now he spoke before the ball game pad that Nolan Ryan is very vulnerable some nights you lose 265 dagger down nights but when he has it going he is completely untouchable it's in control you can put the pitch just about where he wants to throwing that hard and that kind of off-speed stuff yeah very tough to hit bo2 is into the air and Ruben Sierra gets it Nolan Ryan is on his way through six no hits five nothing Rangers Pilli in the first game Montreal wins behind Kevin grosses four hit shutout in the second ballgame good pitching duel it is 2 & 2 as they have played 7 fold the Giants do it again they are just cooking the Giants had not won nine of the last 10 they went three out of four in Atlanta gotta head to San Diego we'll have a game before you Wednesday here on sports channel Scotty ger else the winner he is three and six Kevin Mitchell number 16 in that ballgame Chicago pulls off the Mets a bit 8 to 5 as Ryan Sandberg goes 4 for 5 with three runs scored the couple of RBIs Mitch Williams the former Ranger wins it out of the bullpen Paul Assenmacher saves his second Astros defeat the Dodgers by a 5 3 for the Astros playing very well as they have now won four in a row after sweeping the Reds over the weekend and Pittsburgh and st. Louis piling up some runs in st. Louis they have played eight full eight to seven Pedro Guerrero slamming his 7th of the year Scott Sanderson's night is done he goes six ball dena gives way to Michael Norris Norris wanted though with an ER a 3.5 seven making his tenth appearance give it up 20 get to the 17 in two-thirds he has not pitched since over a week ago ten days ago in Kansas City first pitch to Houston runs in tight he came in for Mike Moore who was knocked out early by the Royals more winch's three and one-third in Norris wound up going at four in two thirds pitched pretty well gave up five hits just one run it was earned didn't walk anybody and struck him out three in Kansas City a game of the A's would lose ten to four well in a strike to Houston two balls and a strike guy like Mike when has been that long off between appearances he likes until a lot of off-speed stuff and it's hard to control it tend to overthrow it just be wild bringing one so Scott Sanderson's three-game winning streak will I don't want to say will in but it is on its way to anything unless the way A's can get productive against Nolan Ryan they have nine more vows to work with but they have not touched him yet you should a little bit fooled there it's three balls and two strikes and he walks his first better sanderson walked two struck out two in his six innings gave up eight hits five runs they were all learned in three home runs and this guy here he's two for three couple of opposite field base hits he stole one base was thrown out trying to take another he also struck out [Music] Norris's on one pinch lettuce misses it might can be exceptionally tough on this guy with that screwball off-speed stuff he gets that screwball over I should say doesn't get her over looks like a strike and then breaks down and away from very tough to hit which broke fast ball sails up that you want to use just to set it up right there two balls and two strikes that last outing for Norris the foreign 2/3 in Casey the longest he is pitched this season is the is evolving into the long relief role which is certainly a difficult role and difficult to command your pitch especially when you have one like screwball yeah it is it's a very tough role to get in there even if you've stuck straight fast balls all the time it's it's tough to do you got to get out there and get some rhythm if you don't get any games you got to work real hard on the side Rick - called strike so Gary Pettis has to think about that one the second strikeout of the night penances [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and he is going quietly but rather slowly his pits looked down in the strike zone from up here meats and backgammon it's where he caught it though it's hard to tell it's where the ball goes over the plate we should get a pretty good view ray it's a strike all the way real good pitch that ball was really diving as it went so where it was caught was low but as you're saying we're crossed the point was the strength it's not where you catch it it's where it crosses the plate Rafael Palmero it was a good contact hitter Houston has the good speed to Bobby Valentine to try and tack on another here [Music] whoa no pitch went through it Jamie quirk all night long first verse Anderson Alfred Norris has been setting up on the outside that is the strategy against this ballclub in general pitch them away you're not gonna try and overpower them you got to set them up Holly what inside of the pitch is to it's it's to it one what's the what do you plan on getting these guys out of way you got to come inside every once in a while but the key to be ineffective that way pitching away is by throwing strikes if you don't throw a strike and you keep the ball away they'll start looking out a little play and then they'll crush you do one pinch three balls and one strike Palmero is over to Clyde to right grounded accursed and walked and scored actually he jogged around after Julio Franco blasted one out to left field Oh strike two nice screwball right there it's one 3-1 count all you have to do is get that screw ball anywhere over the plate even if their loop you know they're probably looking for a fastball if it's a screw ball up and strikes on there won't make good content these guys I've never seen Mike Nonna's I gotta get taste of his screwball great too butter moving Norris he goes to second and his no play there they still get Palmeiro at first base but Mike Norris made a mistake Houston was on the bag as he threw it he had no chance to get him Walter White said to make a quick recovery to get Palmeiro here's a pitch a screwball one hopper right back to him he looks great at second base he should know he doesn't have a chance but still it's not that you take a shot at it because you know the guy he doesn't have great speed I don't think he realizes how quick that Houston got off there there he goes it's hit-and-run he's looking back all the way and just had no idea not close at second he's safe but they do retire Palmeiro another RBI shot for the offensive hero of the evening Julio Franco with a couple of two-run home runs right from Mike Gallego and it chucks around and now we'll get to watch the defensive hero of the ballgame Nolan Ryan it was given the age nothing throughs 6-pole it will be Jennings Hasse and Jose in fight ends are stretching here the Oakland Coliseum they are wondering are we going to watch possibly history tonight will nolan ryan throw number six and we have a timely ditcher no question tonight you know he's thrown five the most in the history of the major leagues but did you know that he has taken five other no-hit games into the ninth only to see them slip away and twice he did it last year August the 10th against Detroit Dave Berkman a one-out single in April 23rd of last year Nelson Liriano of the Blue Jays is a one-out triple dick Hammond Reggie Jackson and Mike Schmidt had also broken up Ryan no nose in the ninth it is early to start thinking about that because he's gone a long way to go he needs nine more outs well the A's have not even come close tonight to getting ahead against him with the first six dark Jennings has struck out twice the A's have struck out nine times first pitch ball strike [Applause] brian has thrown 85 balls pitches including that one it is through 56 strikes 29 bowls like at 57 study scene release he is in a zone he is locked in it and it's even more incredible when you take into account this is only his second start since missing three weeks those lower back spasms said he won't throw Jamie was a curveball away he's sticking to it cost him the game last time down in Texas showing that breaking ball away to him after a bunch of fast balls there I think you probably throw more of a straight change than anything else listen gasses them what to pitch dismissed no pain in the back for Nolan Ryan but he has been just a general pain for the Athletics tonight yuck Jennings to to pitch to him down low 3 & 2 that's the thing that's amazing about Nolan he's got such a great fastball he's got him too - he's gotta have been pitching away all night he's perfectly set up for some gas inside a fastball inside but no he wants to throw him the straight change in the way away he's working with a new catcher tonight John Russell who was catching his first Ginola draw in the game how much will he be a factor well no one has throw his stuff well no one's gonna throw us stuff vault is hit in the air but don't worry about it Ruben Sierra puts it away well if you're gonna throw them a - to change up and go ahead and throw a 3-2 change him brought Hasse's over to striking out flied to Center Ryan has retired 19 of the first 21 is faced only two base runners on with walks Walter Weiss with one out of the third Mike Gallego with one out of the fifth wife's got the second that's as far as the A's have gone [Applause] in addition to the five no-hitters we mentioned before that he has thrown 12 one hitters tying Bob fellers all-time mark just outside and he and Bob Feller don't get along too well in fact Nolan claims that feather has been really critical of his abilities saying basically we said before that Nolan is not much over 500 one wants one through and it's one and two Brian claims cat that goes back to 1974 when the Angels staged a promotion in which they were checking to see if he could break the feathers all-time speed record at the time it was ninety eight point six and some sciences from Rockwell International set up equipment of Anaheim Stadium and Ryan went one hundred point nine and feller didn't like it and that's the reason Bryant says that brother's been hard on him well again you know you talked about some of the play baseball a long time ago naturally they I'm not trying to say this is a knock but they played a different brand of baseball they always played better baseball than the guys who played after him I know you run that motorcycle like he did it for the test for feller he says he only threw three pitches and then he was doing 110 miles an hour I don't know about 2 2 pitch just outside if you want to be critical of anything about nolan it's that he has he's lost almost 300 games okay he's gonna win 300 how can you get on the guy though he's just got a tremendous amount of talent if you pull it pitch as long as he has you're gonna lose a lot of games too I guess you can look at it that way struck him out 10 strikeouts for Nolan Ryan [Applause] fastball up in the strike zone just unable to come up with it and look at this is nothing but power right here look at that leg kick and easiest follows through a great arm action right there great mechanics here's Felix Jose in the crowd is coming to life here they are well aware that the Ryan Express is cranking tonight through six and two-thirds he has been flawless but the exception of the two wants he's got the change-up work and that's what I think is making it more effective than just his fastball it's not throwing accepting hardly he's getting a changeup over then hit the spots with his fastball it's you just can't sit on any one pitch that's what he says that I'm throwing the change and the curve for strikes good luck two balls and one strike to Felix Jose [Applause] now this crowd is almost turned and it appears they're rooting for Nolan Ryan then they came in here looking for the A's to tomorrow but they figure well five nothing let's let's watch it a slice of history I'm sure they'd like to see the nono but if he gives up a hit I think it'll change right back that they want to a is to score six here's the 2-2 pitch he goes full again no Zao for two tonight we rounding out striking out and I should forget to say the Ophir because everybody's over that's why we're all on the edge of our seats that's the whole point well that leg kick tonight he is really driving through that leg hit him in the forehead it looked like that time he'd really bring it up and driving through he's just got real real good mechanics that's why he's never really had a serious arm injury or anything like that he is so smooth out there everything's compact just all headed towards home plate he strikes off the last two he is struck out at 11 and Nolan Ryan is now six outs away from no-hit er he'll eastern Ryan is doing his thing the question is will he do it all the way through through seven he is on his way to number six no hitters Sandy Koufax threw for Nolan has five and is comfortably in front five nothing Ruben Sierra against Michael Norris Ruben Sierra has over one walking twice he flied to Center thanks a strike countess two balls and one strike Ciara was rather not spoken last year when he finished second to Robin Yount of the MVP balloting saying they stole it from me and it will make me work harder to get it because I deserved it think that's so outspoken most guys within a second would say he was very deserving Robin Yount future hall-of-famer Sierra went way down bought his rap phone picked up by Toby hello Homer arranger infielder few guys spell his name either way it says the same thing great distinction H a RR aah probably in better shape now than when he was playing he was in pretty good shape then great tutor Ruben Sierra Mike darkness looking good upsell Norris is out - it's called a screwball here comes look at the breakdown in a way way out in front tough to hit put a bunch of left-handers in the line if that's the way a lot of people used to think that could be successful against my left-handers left-handers but that was rape to his power all that screwball down away that's tough to hit call the screwball is very often you are when I'm facing it here's one wrap for Willie Randolph over the line it's not going to have a lot of time to rest here looking forward to the bottom of the eighth-inning days are gonna send up scheduled 673 Dave Henderson Jamie quirk Walter Weiss but Tony does have a good selection of pinch hitters to go to Mark McGwire Terry Steinbach Carney Lansford Ken Phelps who knows a thing or two about bringing these things up just ask Brian home one thing I can almost guarantee if Kenny Phelps come up comes up he probably won't be getting the first pitch fastball ands in for a strike Mike Norris doing his job pete incavilgia zone for three first three at-bats against Scott Sanderson solid base hit for any Cavalia is now hit safely in six in a row his longest streak of this year in Gdynia the matter cutter John Russell will bring on their catcher tonight John Russell the third catcher they have on their roster behind Geno petrology is out with a bad neck it Mike Stanley is not hitting at all old guys down nicely well this block gets away from quark and scampering down to second base is it Couvillion pitch for Jamie to handle right there did a pretty good job kept it out in front of them screwball down to dirt very hard to dock a little especially when it's going that quick made a better play that I thought he made no word yet but you have to assume that's a wild pitch it is not confirmed we have confirmation as well just outside John Russell blasted home run tonight that's been the Texas offensive story three home runs at County crawl five of the roads to hit by Julio Franco boat to run blows one of the first one of the fit in between Russell and a line shot over the left-field wall leading off the second all office Scott Sanderson and Mike Norris goes full now on Russell green to two outs top of the eighth some real close pitches right there no Mike's not real happy about that always fouled off hot smash takes a kick in in the ground days and Rangers go again tomorrow at 12:15 struggling Mike Moore for nat64 46 ER run against Bobby win it was also very effective against the A's in Arlington last Thursday as Mike Norris does walk John Russell Norris his second walk along with two strikeouts that's coming on Mike Norris one of the greatest Florence plenty things in hand to a pitcher when they're out there Mike used to get real hyper when Billy was here art come running out there one time a Mike jumped on said alright what am I doing wrong Marcelo I don't know but you're making Billy mad doctor order they would throwing an art Fowler the former days pitching coach Andrew Martin's life long coaches he brought him where everyone except the last couple times to New York yeah George wouldn't let them come there anymore [Applause] Oh Wanda Steve Michelle is grounded foul for Mike Gallego at third base Carney Lansford not starting the ballgame tonight for the strange slice up the right arm but he could potentially be available to use that stick of wood to go up and maybe break up a no-no you real good Carney might say off-speed pitch Nolan's thrown a lot of them so that's a would be a natural choice right there Oh two runs inside Rochelle he got down nicely how low can you go with your 9:30 wake-up call right there he's got to do the Bo Jackson and pop up from his back quickly to his feet the fans are doing the wave here which the guest is helping to keep them warm scoreboard trying to stop it but it gets by the scoreboard on the right-field bleachers in left field bleachers Rochelle hits one hard but it's bending foul bill King might have had something to do with the no wave sign knowing how much he loves it him in lon Simmons [Applause] Rochelle goes back in Mike must be having a problem with his curveball right there because usually he has a real real good curveball he has yet to show it it's been throwing a lot of screwballs but normally it has a real good curveball to him he has not broken it out yet with shadows Oprah three to nine rounding out all three times now he strikes out before time on a Mike Norris to the ball we head to the bottom of the egg scheduled Henderson quirk and wife's trying to break up Nolan's number six Jim Martindale here to tell you about the 136 in the Coliseum tonight wondering have they chosen the night they come down and watch the A's battle Nolan Ryan through seven pull Ryan is retired 21 of the 23 is faced only two walks one device one two going a go he has struck out 11 Athletics that is the party for this the two hundred and first time he has struck out 10 or more 701 the tongue and he goes to work against Dave Henderson first six outs away [Applause] Anderson and his two at-bats posture short struck out and coming out on deck is Carney Lansford to hit for Jamie quirk so Tony does not want the A's to be no-hit you can bet on the first pitch right through Tony was talking about Brian Holman in pitching the perfect game here and he said you know we weren't gonna win that ballgame but I do not care I do not want anything that's superb done to the Oakland Athletics I don't think anybody wants to be no-hit but sometimes you just can't do anything about it Rickey Henderson is pretty good at breaking up no-hitters who played with him when he broke broke up two in the ninth inning within a week really Steve Renko with the angels and then Louie Tiant el Tiant a Ricky would miss scheduled to come to bat one more time he would be the second out of the night here's the o2 and all that overthrew that one a little bit he tried to throw that right through John Russell Carney Lansford I mean that's a great idea to pinch-hit Carney right there to because you know if Phelps comes up he's going to get a lot of change ups Carney likes the off-speed pitch it's coming right into him and he can handle the bat well as we all know summons God's Lily out of the ball has gotten loose in the athletic pokeman where Jean Nelson is warming art Kushner who caught nolan Ryan's second no-hitter that was July of 73 Nolan's first two were in 73 they had one in 74 one in 75 all with California his fifth and record-breaker September 26th of 81 when he no hit but Dodgers ironically by a five nothing score our score tonight is venters since days of honor toys fun to listen to art talk about the no hitter when he used to catch nolan he does his own sound effects sounds like universal studios [Applause] two balls and two strikes on Dave Henderson [Applause] it's hard to sit here and even guess what he's going to throw it the way he's done it so far tonight and you probably throw changeup he's done it a couple times already I just want to smoke him away too well when you go at 95 go at 95 Ryan is struck out 12 tonight he is 5 away that's some cheese right there look at that leg kick follow-through just a good good old-fashioned hard ball as they call it well here comes one of Tony's bullets he only maybe he only has a couple on the gun and this is one to use Carney Lansford it was missed the last three with a bad right tricep muscle going to step in there the guy who finished second in the American League last year and hitting he's going to try his hacks trying to break it up think about it Nolan knows he's in off speed not that he's just an off speed hitter but he likes the off-speed pitch he's he's out there thinking he's not giving in to Kearney at all Kearney was over three against Ryan last Wednesday in Arlington he comes in struggling [Applause] carnies in the midst of a 3/4 28 string can I ask you to come off the bench bold and swing it the Express he's digging in tight good chance he's going to get it too he's got a lot of pride counting Lansford there's they are too [Applause] that one went 93 miles per hour don't leave the TV he has just turned it up a notch right here these last two guys yes don't stop four in a row cat he has struck out 13 tonight Walter was one of only two ways to get on base he walked that's not just strike them out that's blowing on the way [Applause] johnross oldest what's the globe where he wants it to go a Nolan Ryan throws one of the middle nineties right at it Walt's been looking for that he's been hitting that pitch all year long just shooting over there at third-base but then again we're shooting it off somebody else well the entire baseball world is tuned in to this right now Nolan Ryan [Applause] his four outs away and he's just one strike away from this out [Applause] Oh to Walter why sits in an accomplishment in itself but stable shout and foul ground and Nolan Ryan is now three away Mike Gallego is scheduled to lead off at 9:00 and then the top of the order Rickey Henderson and Willie Randolph [Applause] everywhere else around baseball they're saying ain't no LeMay do it again let's check out for a moment before we see if he does what the rest of baseball watched tonight it was Cleveland beating Boston 4 to 3 the Indians of now once in a row Tom Brookins a single scored the game-winner in the twelfth inning Doug Jones saved number 20 Toronto lost their four-game winning streak they were beaten 4 to 1 in Milwaukee Dan play sax saved number 11 Greg Vaughn had a big ballgame the White Sox are certainly happy about the events here in the Coliseum they came into play tonight just three games behind the Athletics they can come within two Milito Perez is throwing a good game himself Carlton Fisk land is spent it is 2 2 sac fly by Frank white of the seventh tied it for Kansas City that's on the American League in the National League he bunt rial won the opener 5 nothing behind Kevin gross they came back in won the second game as a wild pitch was thrown by Jeff parrot allowing Otis Nixon to score the winning run of the eighth inning the montreal takes 2 from the slumping Phillies Giants are cooking they have won 9 of 10 the Reds idle tonight to the Giants with their turn of events now are 9 back they'll go to San Diego for 3 beginning tomorrow cops beat the Mets 8 to 5 Dodgers lose at the Dome 5 to 3 and Pittsburgh 8 to 7 they hang out and win Stan Belinda just called up from triple-a gets the win he's two in one bidding needing fewer Guerrero slam number 70 Jay Nelson is in and he's throwing to a new catcher also Terry Steinbach comes in for Jamie quirk who was pinch-hit for by Carney Lansford Nelson the A's third pitcher of the night Geoff Huston fouls it off a ball and a strike to him Jay Nelson has thrown very well this year 1 & 2 with a tra of 1.35 three saves give it up his 19 hits walking 5 striking about 16 of the 26 and 2/3 one Wanda Hewson mrs. P mrs. Nelson last pitch at Texas last Wednesday going 2/3 living up to bits that was the second game of the series the game that also started by Sanderson and Ryan Honeycutt burns came on later records late approach the last finding burrs 18th save so it has been a while for Jane Nelson for the A's have been getting such great starting pitching throughout the weekend that Tony's been able to rest the bullpen [Music] three balls and two strikes on Jeff Hewson there was 1 for 2 with a single and base on balls will here and all will toss him out and I was 1 for 3 [Applause] but frankly this top of the ninth is nothing more than a formality we are all waiting for the bottom of the ninth judging by the way Nolan was throwing in the 8th cat he is a better than odds on bet to get his 6 no-hitter tonight I would have to agree if I think if he's going to get hurt it's going to be by hanging breaking ball because he's just raring back now he's picked up it seems like three four miles an hour [Applause] Nolan Ryan has 42 big league records you looking at the Ranger media guide there are 16 pages of data about Ryan to put that into perspective the information about the rangers team owners come off as in manager total 11 pages that's 18 people himself takes care of Rickey Henderson snags the flyby pennis two-ounce mythic Mike Mike Gallego will patter will Tony pinch it for him is he's already used up Lansford but he has McGuire he has Ken Phelps that's it probably Canseco is called a cam out of the hospital to come over and take it snacks Babe Ruth is dead so we never know we're not gonna see him I think I'll go with Maguire or somebody I think you take it out yes it would be Phelps I would guess left-hand hitter yeah which is outside now if they do bring up phelps that'll set up a bit of deja vu and he's holding not one but two beds and he's picking out the one he wants it looks like eBay hit he's going for a helmet there's a fly ball Palmeiro it's a pretty deep but Ricky's on the track and he makes the play [Applause] Ricky himself is scheduled it is the number nine hitter Gallego and Phelps is going to throw on a helmet he's coming up and then it'll be Ricky and Willie Randolph those three men are in the way of Nolan Ryan that's the beauty Nolan Ryan to come to the ballpark tonight thinking well just another night at the office cat but with him you never know when you're going to take a piece of American law home with you and tonight may be the night Ryan is getting himself extra limber but the great thing about us nobody's saying a word to him did you see anybody say good luck Nolan anything like that nobody's talking to him and obviously the Coliseum would like to see Nolan do it either way the respect and admiration is overwhelming or completely an American folklore this man at age 43 four months old is a marvel he is thrown 116 pitches 75 strikes 41 balls does only Koufax threw for cat he has five looking for six what a difference a week makes he threw that many pitches in five innings the other night in Dallas exactly a throw 113 and 5 tedious innings but tonight his second game back ten films will be the first man to try and break it up it was a very first pitch that Brian Holman through Phelps with two hours of the night that he slammed over the right-field wall to break up a no-hitter and a perfect game not just a no-hitter but perfection Ryan is that nearly perfect he has walked two let's Brian Holman that's not Nolan Ryan he threw he's going to be a good pitcher but - I'll tell you what it's we're talking a completely different fastball [Music] [Applause] well either way this ninth-inning is going to be enjoyable Nolan Ryan is three away Jen Phelps did not hit against Ryan in Texas last weekend [Applause] the fielders are probably more nervous than Nolan is because they don't want to be the one that does not make the flight [Applause] by Ken Phelps has got to be saying himself where am I am I in Oakland maybe the whole place explodes when he takes a strike that'll never happen except for a scenario like this [Applause] strike one pitch oh he was late on that I don't know how fast that one was but man that baby over 95 he was so far behind that ball candy and no chance that was some severe cheese right [Applause] when you look back and asking umpire if that was a ball he says I don't know it sounded high Oh - mrs. Nolan has 13 strikeouts tonight 5155 in his career but on that list you will not find the name Kent Phelps he has never struck out against Nolan Ryan and his scene of a number of times they had against him a number of years with his the Mariners and the Yankees Orion has been tucked away in the national league for a few years with Houston up until last year 1-2 pinch cap pops you're on the list [Applause] brian has struck out five of the last six 14 tonight straight change [Applause] look at them they're nervous over there big reaction strike three [Applause] Ricky popped to short struck out flied to Center it is up to Ricky and Willie Randle [Applause] strike one [Music] whenever these two guys hang it up they're going straight to Cooperstown this is some scenario last pitch was 93 miles per hour home on its it in the air falls it back you know you're at the stage this ballgame now where if the name touches one of the pitches you feel some sense of accomplishment it really is remarkable what he has done the last few innings he has gotten stronger and stronger he was good at the start but as he's cooking now he has it all going his way [Applause] ball is hit in the air could be playable down the line Palmeiro giving it all he's got can't get it [Applause] it was Rafael Palmeiro who blew a rod Kittel blooper in Nolan's one-hitter he wanted the mattone to get one here for him but there's a long run a lot of fall ground in Oakland County means nothing into on Ricky [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] check swing Doosan better hurry pros two outs Willie Randolph stands in the way of Nolan Ryan and his sixth no-hitter well Jeff Houston made a heck of a play to get shortstop even that good one little hesitation to Mark McGwire's coming out on deck in case Randolph draws a walk that would build the scenario some more but one little hesitation by Houston a rookie has it infield single well again he does not no one wants to be the guy that causes him to no no and he had to get rid of it made a real good play one ball and no strikes one of the few times tonight Ryan's been behind [Applause] and always behind suno [Applause] Willie Randolph struck out that once solidly to left field one of the best hit balls of the night and also flied to right choooo pitch ball to sit in the air maybe playable Ruben Sierra comes [Music] [Applause] not only are his teammates mobbed again but a number of fans have climbed over the wall to get to Ryan there's the king and they lifted him and carrying him paying homage the Nolan Ryan I would say he is back from his back problems I can't I think he feels pretty good we hope to talk to Nolan Ryan coming up on the postgame show a slice of history brought to you tonight five-nothing Rangers world of international sports will canvass the world of sports in the world at large with exciting events from Australia to Zaire world of international sports 8 Eastern 5 Pacific on sports channel America on a night [Music] tonight's game will live forever at Cooperstown and it's been brought to you by AT&T the right choice and you made the right choice we all did by being here and watching Nolan Ryan pitches sixth no-hitter is the oldest man to pitch one saw young did one at age 41 and here is the final out Willie Randolph fittingly a fastball in Ruben Sierra in foul ground will crate of it like a newborn it's amazing right here the concentration this guy he is he's just a legend you knew he was gonna do it you watch his reaction right here he just knows the game right after six um I guess you get kind of used to that's as excited as he gets and Here Come his teammates this is like a World Championship reaction [Applause] I think those guys are actually probably happier than he is right there what a lift it is for a team that is having a miserable season they came in to play 15 games behind the A's in the American League Western Division but tonight they feel like king of the world because the king pitched for them and you know he was good at the start but as he got going later on he became completely untouchable merely fouling a ball off was an accomplishment the thing that's so amazing about is when he started the game off he was throwing pretty good and he's getting his curve ball over his changeup over then he picked it up a notch after about the fifth or sixth inning he just started blowing some cheese right there about 95 miles an hour and that's what the great pitchers do they rise to the occasion and he did it and the thing that is so incredible is that this is nolan Ryan's second star since coming off a disabled list he pitched last Wednesday against this very same Athletic Club he pitched well but nothing like tonight and you know a guy that was a physical question mark heading into the ballgame was anything but a question mark in any way shape or form tonight it's amazing I talking to their trainer before I says yeah he's he's still stiff maybe 80 to 90 percent then he goes out there and does that it's it's amazing I I'm still in awe just thinking about what he did right there people you don't realize how hard it is to do it and then when your backs hurt like that it's unbelievable yeah you know sports casters were supposed to be objective and keep it right down the line but I'll admit it I mean in the ninth inning I think everybody wanted to see Nolan Ryan get a piece of number six I did I mean it's great I mean a guy like that he's he's a legend that's what he is he's a legend strikeout King he's gonna win his 300 games but to see that whenever you see somebody do that perfection like that up not a perfect game but a no-hitter it's always amazing only to base on balls he was nearly perfect in the no-hit game tonight he only walked to Walter Weiss and Mike Gallego he struck out 14 more batters tonight and here's a sampling of some mrs. Felix Jose that's the raw heat there's Dave Henderson there's Jamie quirt there's Dave Henderson again there's a big ad bad when Carney Lansford came in to pinch-hit check swing Felix Jose went too far it really was just that kind of night as well not you'll tell everybody you've ever seen it about and it's pretty incredible to watch what Nolan Ryan can accomplish and as we were talking about that on the broadcast a guy who would throughout his career and he's had his great moments but he's been labeled throughout his career by his critics as a guy who merely as a 500 pitch a little bit above that but when Nolan Ryan has all of the elements of his game working Ted he is downright frightening as an athlete I think you could really say that when he is on like he was tonight he's the most dominating pitcher that this game might have ever had I mean he's unbelievable he throws out hard he's got the breaking stuff to change up when he's on like that obviously he can just control the game it's unbelievable I'm in shock I played for 14 years I've watched a couple no-hitters but nothing ever like that it's amazing we're gonna hope to talk to Nolan Ryan I guess a few people would also like to talk to him tonight but we're gonna try and get him on our broadcast and grace the King for what he has accomplished tonight Ola Ryan sixth five-nothing the Rangers win Game one of the series cat and I will come back in moments all your old favorites are on the only bay area station that brings them together Sports channel the channel of Champions Coliseum where Nolan Ryan just no-hit the yeas by the five nothing score and hang with us we are told by the Rangers public relations department we will be able to talk to Nolan Ryan after he goes around and talks to a few others he's right now on a ranger radio back to Dallas I'd love to pick up a Dallas Morning News tomorrow and see the headline I mean this guy is it's hard to really put it into perspective how popular Nolan Ryan is in the state of Texas buddy who became a little more popular after tonight well he's pretty much a legend everywhere but when you do Europe you playing your state you grew up and then you get a little bit bigger he's got to be on cloud nine right now everybody's gonna be having I know a lot of the politicians would probably be having for Nolan because they want him to run for office and they probably got him a few more votes right there let's take a look at some of the highlights of this ballgame there were other moments in the game is there also as a subplot to this game Nolan Ryan is the hero obviously but Julio Franco had himself a a pretty good game that no one will remembers polio goes the other way with this Scott Sanderson pitch in the top of the first that is out a home run Gary Pettis was on board and that gave Ryan quickly a 2 nothing lead before he even began to embark on history John Russell in the top of the second first at-bat of the inning and he lines went out sharply his second American League home run it not only is Weiss of washer but so was Ricky Henderson not sure what that sign means out there but either way it was 3 nothing then Franco again here he hits one in the fifth off of Scott Sanderson with Rafael Palmeiro on first two had walked so Julio Franco slams a pair of two-run homers in the ballgame and that gives Nolan Ryan a 5 to nothing lead he hardly anything at all to win this ballgame but that certainly is also gonna be a big story in the ball game obviously he was great he had tremendous stuff but by the fact that he got out to a quick lady became even that much more effective well that's what you need a pitcher that is a quality pitcher like Nolan is once they get a lead they know what to do with it and when he's on anything can happen and then you get a two run then three run four run lead he just went out and slammed the door he just took the game up from here to here and it's amazing I sit here and just think about what that feeling must be like and I really can't relate to it you know I have to admit you know I've always thought no-hitters we're somewhat boring and who wants to watch a guy go out and throw right by everybody nobody gets a base hit but literally they're in the ninth inning I was almost trembling watching tonight it's also a little more special because of who it is had it been somebody else's first it would not have been as dramatic but the fact that this guy has thrown more no-hitters that anybody Sandy Koufax has four but but Nolan has six and again saw young at age 41 was the oldest pitcher before tonight and Nolan Ryan was 43 years and four months old through number six that you know that even adds more unbelievable tea to this thing it's amazing it's just it's just amazing when you talk about hit Rickey Henderson and both them going on their way to the Hall of Fame Nolan will probably still be playing when Rickey gets voted into the Hall of playing Hall of Fame that's the kind of athlete this guy is he could probably pitch as long as he wants yes if that puts a damper on tomorrow's Mike Moore versus Bobby Witt matchup now would you like to do a follow up the no-hit bid there by Nolan Ryan at the end of moments we are going to talk to Nolan Ryan and in fact as I'm told Nolan Ryan is now joining us on the field and the big ovation goes up as he throws on the headsets Nolan Craig poppin Steve McCatty with the Oakland A's sports channel he want to thank you so much for coming I guess it's safe to assume that your back was no problem tonight huh honestly wished I could say that it wasn't a factor but it's I can tell you that it isn't as good as I'd like it to be but I think I've had it long enough I'm able to block it out daily week the trainer said earlier in the game here about maybe 80 90 percent it's just something that you really don't know if it's going to get any better but you don't expect it to get worse well I think that's the conclusion I came to when I was on disabled this was it reached a point and just hadn't improved and I felt like that you know it could be something that lingered on all year and it was gonna take a prolonged rest and I just didn't feel like that I wanted to sit around all summer because I was throwing and it would bother me to a degree and then it wouldn't get any worse and so I would I felt like I could just pitch through it or pitch with it and that's pretty much what I'm going to do Nolan how do you compare this one to the the five previous well I think that it's probably as meaningful or more meaningful to me than the fifth one because it's come so late in my career and I I think last year getting close a couple of times I really didn't feel like maybe I don't know if you're aware of it maybe somebody else told you but you are the oldest pitcher to ever throw a no-hitter saw young was 41 years of age that also has to be a tremendous part of what you've accomplished tonight well I've gotten a lot of satisfaction out of being able to perform on the level that I have it at this late stage of my career and you know you feel good when you dedicate yourself something and you put in a lot of hard work and you feel like that you reap the benefits from well tonight was one of those benefits to say the least he gave us all to thrilled I congratulate you very much on a tremendous night thank you Nolan Ryan who is going to not only have a spot in Cooperstown I'm gonna have to give his whole floor after what he's accomplished and in 42 major league records he throws his sixth career no-hitter denied he actually said that physically he wasn't sound it I don't know how much better he could have been but possibly he could have been a pedigree no it's almost frightening how good he could be 100% what he probably wouldn't a walk to God he has never thrown a perfect game tonight he was nearly perfect in striking out 14 walking only Walter Weiss and Mike guy a go and not even coming close no a can stay but I can't close Willie Randolph I didn't get the solid most solid ball and Jamie quirk also hit him solidly but they were right at outfielders the thing it was great to watch but the thing I was most impressed with with in the fifth inning when he felt that no hitter he just picked his game up and his fastball just took off then that's a sign of a true truly great pitching well it's been a pleasure to watch this what can we tell you it was exciting for everybody in the ballpark in cat and I enjoyed it as much as I'm sure you did at home as sports channel brought you history tonight Nolan Ryan sixth career no-hitter the final score the Rangers 5 and the Oakland A's nothing stay tuned tough back to follow but pro boxing tourists coming up right here all of the hard-hitting action of this exclusive sports channel pro boxing event our next baseball game will be Wednesday from Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego with the Giants continue the most successful road trip they'll be taking on the Padres Wednesday at 7 o'clock our next game involving the A's will be on June 22nd the A's returned home to take on the Chicago White Sox Nolan Ryan was struggling coming into this game they had lost his last three starts Oh in three in his last five but they are a almost nine but it's coming down tonight as if roses sixth career no no it beats the A's five another four Steve McCatty brick Papa saying so long from the Oakland Coliseum [Music] three of the day but on Monday evening the Ryan Express got his self back in gear and he did it once again D this is a great story in Terry chick standing by at the Update desk with the biggest story Monday night Terry all right bill thank you very much the man is 43 years young that's about the only way to put it he started off the season four and oh when he went to four and oh he threw a one-hitter and at the time he had tied Bob Feller for the most one hitters in a career with 12 anyone on the DL he had some problems comes into the game with a record of four and three trying to get off the snide and get a win and boy talk about getting a win this man is doing something that no one else has ever done he is throwing a 96 mile-per-hour fastball at the age of 43 and at that age he is the oldest man ever to throw a no-hitter the sixth of his career let's take you out to Oakland County Alameda County Stadium and watched the Ryan Express do it one more time as he just blows it by everybody 14 strikeouts on the night the 200 and first time he has gone over 10 or more in a game the heat was there he was painting corners no one could touch him he walked only two players in the game the only two people that even got close to him and then it comes down to Willie Randolph with two outs in the ninth Ruben Sierra in foul territory and that is it Nolan Ryan just keeps rolling along his place in the history books is secure no doubt about that if he ever gives the game up he has headed straight on the train to Cooperstown for a sixth time the man has thrown the know no look at the zeros for Oakland the last time they faced that the year was 1976 the Chicago White Sox with John Blue Moon Odom and Francisco Barrios combining for a no-hitter but not this time it is one man a legend Nolan Ryan and after the game he was asked what it was like going into the ninth inning knowing he needed just three outs and what I had to do I go out there in each pitch make sure I just blocked it out on at that particular time that I didn't let it affect the pitch and you know I guess I've dealt with it now long enough about six week period seven week period that I've learned to deal with it better I think I guess I'm better prepared to deal with it I wished I could say that it's gotten a lot better but it really hadn't well knowing you've had situations like the ninth-inning to deal with many times in your career and you have completed him now six times what was going through your mind as you face Willie Randolph in that ninth-inning well my attitude about Willie was keep the ball down I know he's a high ball hitter I made a bad pitch on him earlier in the game and I thought if we've been at home the ball may have been out of the ballpark but I think with a heavier air I hear the ball died and when it left the bat I really thought that he'd hit the ball out so I wasn't gonna make that mistake in him then in the ninth inning the fly ball to Ruben Sierra off Randolph's bat and that wrapped it up well when he hit it I felt like if it was an end of the stands Ruben was gonna have a shot at because it was high enough and I was just hoping that was gonna stay in there stay in the ballpark and I felt like if it did that Ruben was gonna catch it and when I look down picked Ruben up I knew we had good shot can you describe the emotion when Ruben put the ball in the glove and everybody ran out of the dugout how what you were feeling on the mound well I think you feel relieved I think what's really touching is how excited and supporting your teammates are and I think that's that really affects it affects me emotionally not so much that that I've gotten wrapped up in in as much as what that means to you to have that kind of support frame teammate he's six no hitter of course that is a major league record for Nolan Ryan he is the oldest to throw a no-hitter as I said forty-three years young the oldest previous was sigh young like sigh young one day Nolan Ryan will be at Cooperstown he threw 14 strikeouts the last two strikeout in the game was Ken Phelps to open the ninth that is the two hundred and first time he has gone over 10 or more the 59th career shutout Nolan Ryan just keeps rolling along the third no-hitter tossed this season of course the first came on opening day with Mark Langston and Mike Witt combining for one Randy Johnson the Mariners throwing one and now Nolan Ryan and that's his sixth Nolan Ryan in the books once again bill
