number 20 is dwight stone stone with blinding speed and this kickoff is sponsored by budweiser the king of beers if there's one area in which the steelers have a decided advantage it's in the kick return game the bengals don't do a good job of getting the kickoff deep and as a result they have a lot of yardage run back against them and you're facing two of the most dangerous return people in football in whitestone number 20 and when they're punting the ball lewis flips number 83 but watch stone he's one of the fastest players in pro football and if there is a little bit of a weakness sam weich uh says his kickoff game is not quite as good as he would like it to be they lost quite a bit of a yardage last week in their victory but this one is hit pretty well and that's woodson waiting for it at the steeler five let's see how far he can bring it 25 30 and taken down at the 30-yard line a 28-yard return and it'll be steeler ball and they're going to spot the ball down at about their 35-yard line take a look at the offensive lineup bubba bristol the quarterback ernie johnson and uh ernest johnson and dwight stone of the running backs outside men are louis lips wedgie thompson or ouija thompson and preston gothard a very fine tight end and here come the steelers first down from their own 33 and the offensive line willfully rankster webster long and hilton trench hilton the tight end in motion the pitch back is to johnson and he swings around jackson around the left side and is going to be taken out of bounds somewhere around about the maybe the 25-38 yard line eric thomas got in there to make the tackle take a look at the defense defensive line skipped mcclendon at the one end and in the middle is tim krumri and uh jim snow is the other defensive end leon white carl zander joe kelly and reggie williams a very special football player and the defensive backs louis phillips eric thomas davis culture and solomon wilcox who had a whale of a game last week and it'll be second down at about five and again this is jackson moving in motion and to give us to that quick back stone and he is over the 40-yard line before he has taken down stone on the carry looked like joe kelly a three-year veteran from washington uh made the tackle for spot the ball and put the yardage at about the 42 and that'll bring up a third down and about one there's the linebacker who just made the stop the steelers always want to control the football by running it and they'll run the football between the tackles and tunes ilkin and uh craig wolfley they have two fine offensive tackles well here's the third and one and which one are they going to pick on will it be stole or will be jackson the chances are pretty good might be jackson and it is jackson how about the 45. ricky dixon the number one pick of the cincinnati bengals oklahoma maple town yes reggie ernest jackson is five nine 225 pounds so he's very strong he breaks a lot of tackles the steelers like to feature jackson in the running game and you'll see a lot of the short trapping action with jackson running the football straight ahead they won't run him outside as much they want to run jackson straight at you number 43. ready to go first down steelers we're just underway at three rivers stadium and the same offensive you all in the backfield that stone breaking away from us in motion number 20. and here's bristol's first pass of the day a fake punt now comes down this near sideline here is lip intercepted by the cincinnati bengals and it'll be taken back to the five hold on they blow it dead down at the five yard line well that's the rights has also got a complaint that was louis phillips number 24 who picked it off right off lewis lips's shoulder well that's the right call because contact was made with the receiver after he has caught the football you're watching louis lips number 83 brister with the big arm outstanding coverage by bill now watch village make the play on the ball he has as much right to the ball as does lip and the rules state that if in going for the football he makes contact well the officials should not call that pass an appearance and that's an excellent call and that's an excellent play by phillips he's a little unhappy isn't he well why not he thought he had a lot of yardage he could pick up it'll be james brooks number 21 and stanley wilson number 32 with the setbacks behind boomer esiason and in motion goes eddie brown trying to get to the back is james brooks we're going to see a lot of him in a lot of different uh positions this afternoon and now a quick look at the offensive unit of the bengals boomerang at the quarterback spot james brooks stanley wilson the running back eddie brown one wonderful receiver is wide and uh tim mcgee and the tight end is rodney holden [Music] anthony munoz bruce reimers bruce kosterski max montoya and joe walter who had a great game against eagles last week and there's number seven the boomer and he's got a second down and about eight [Applause] great defensive flow on the part of the steelers there was still number 90 who got there to put the tackle on him in history the steeler defensive unit aaron jones rookie at the left-hand spot and gerald williams is in the middle and keith gary is the other defensive end it'll be brian pickles david little hardy nickerson and anthony hinton as linebackers rob woodson's killed cornell gowdy and lupy sanchez are the defensive backs they'll have a nickel defensive back in here that's this time larry griffith comes in the steelers do a lot of things off of this look but he sashing has been very tough in this situation this year recognizing the defenses and hitting the right people we won't be able to get this play off because there's a tremendous amount of noise here at three rivers stadium [Applause] and they'll just have to be content to wait for it to die down momentarily i remember a ball game a few years ago pittsburgh and cleveland in which this crowd kept up this noise for about nine minutes eventually uh the ball was snapped and it was a fumble by cleveland so you have to have poised if you're a quarterback if steinson has been through this a number of times and he won't go to the line of scrimmage and he won't get under center until he has complete calm you're talking about a maturing quarterback in boomer assassin it'll be third down about 11 on the ball resting near the three-yard line of the bengals and they're going to try it again mike martin is wide out to the left and the lone setback behind quarterback of fire from his brooks it could be third down at 11. and the roll out by assassin in the end zone he's in trouble looks up field fires it is going to be incomplete this is going to be a safety whenever you have a penalty in the end zone you will be called for a safety i'm sure that's what it's going to be at least it should be watch your science and now you see number 97 aaron jones go down he was clipped from behind it should be a safety that's what it'll be good call fellas it was a heck of a call reggie the referee microphone kind of breaking up a little bit that's tom dooley and bob boyle from the umpire headlines from there it is again you can see aaron jones on the right of the screen go down and that is the infraction holding a major penalty in the end zone will be called the safety well we've got a two-nothing ballgame kind of an awkward start to the uh to the bengals and the steelers this afternoon in three rivers stadium and we'll be right back [Music] to the center's left well it is a two-nothing contest and here's that replay and how it happened reggie watch number 65 max montoya on number 97 he has his hands in his back but now watch him he clips him from behind in the end zone which is the same as the safety and here's the cincinnati punk footage hits it pretty good that looks like luffy sanchez over the far side it is steeler 30 still far side and he fights his way up for a pretty good return near the 38-yard line and the steelers have a two-nothing lead and the ball again 18-yard return for lupi and there is montoya to follow that reggie spotted and so did the officials with the infraction in the end zone it's not a call that happens a lot because offensive linemen are worn whatever you do when your quarterback is in the end zone you cannot commit an infraction particularly when you're under as the word is called sufficient pressure great call on this one that i don't think reggie i have ever seen called before same duo back tony jackson 43 and white stone number 20. and the fumble is recovered by bristol a good runner and he manages to get it back to the oh the line of skirmish in a step beyond that and carl xander number 91 takes it down take a look at the misplay of the snap mike webster is the center and bristol number six is a quarterback brister just doesn't get the ball clean as he comes away from center as a matter of fact uh webster last week was responsible for fumble during a point after touchdown snap that was missed and of course the steelers lost the redskins 30 to 29. well here's brister putting it in the air again nailed by the blitzing linebacker racing in number 51 is leon white he was firing and brister never had a chance if i've seen one thing in the early going this year is that people aren't protecting their quarterback and they aren't handling the blitzes properly leon white came in uncontested that time and if you don't pick that sort of thing out you're going to really lose a quarterback as cleveland browns will tell you well charles lockett is in that lineup now and he's split out wide to the left side number 89 let's watch christopher and this will be a third and a 15 from the left there 35 2 nothing to stealers as we just tuned in an unusual safety call but a very good one [Music] fair protection and he is knocked down in the backfield charging in to make the tackle number 98 and that is david grant who backs up tim comrade david grant a rookie from west virginia big guys 290 pounds just bull rushes pressures right through the steelers pass protection and brister is under a lot of pressure early in the ball game and that can be unsettling for a young quarterback who has to move about and has to move his feet and he can't set his offense we're all ready to go awaiting the punt by harry newsome and down about the 30-yard line the return man a single man a single receiver is mike martin from illinois as a veteran about six years in the league and there's the catch boy the penalty flag is thrown as he got knocked down at about the 38 yard line [Music] flag looked like it might have been stole making the tackle for the steelers and we'll get the official interpretation of the flags momentarily right at the top of the ball game one of the more unusual safety calls has given the steelers a two or nothing lead and we have an injured player reggie go use the hands number 89 of the receiving team one of the things i want you to notice as you look at tom dooley the referees this year wear white hats and we will be back in just a moment this is ira hillary a backup wide receiver watch him now number 33 merle hodge will be attempting to make the tackle and you'll see hillary number 89 push him from behind there's the penalty and on the play number 88 mike martin is injured but he is running to the sideline as you can see there he's okay and there is ira hillary who committed the infraction the officials had the laundry out early chuck uh-huh well uh assistant gets a second shot in better field position uh the bengals started the first time down on their five-yard line and one up with an unusual safety here they come from the 25 [Music] and looking uh at the offensive set in motion that's the tight end home and here's the size and looking to throw defender was intended for eddie brown and tyrone stowe was there but just could not could not get the handle on it i think one of the characteristics of the steelers defense even though they've had a lot of yardage put on them is that they usually come up with these turnovers interceptions force fumbles and things and they're not getting that this year therefore they've had a lot of yardage run up against them and you saw tyrone stowe had an opportunity number 90 to pick up that now that patch is for of course the late art rooney who passed away uh during training camp you'll see the patch on the shoulders of the steelers jerseys it'll be brooks and wilson back there this will be a second down ten at the uh bengal 25 steelers leading two nothing and they'll fire some looking beat has some time good protection drops it off to his man he's got him up to the 30 and down he goes at about the 31 yard line david little is closing in to make the tackle now watch the bengals they will go with no huddle this is to prevent the steelers from bringing in their nickel defense to bring in the six and seven defensive back and also so that the bengals can ensure pass protection it's easier to block protection when the steelers can't get their situation substitutions in and now what you're going to find out is the fans are so sophisticated that they're countering by making it so that assassin cannot get his signals out to his players wilson the setback behind the science and wide of the left side is jamie brooks it is a third down and all along the three they can't hear they can't hear a look left and look out pressure he got it away but it's incomplete and coming for home in the tight end number 82. excellent coverage again by dave little if you watch number 82 rodney holman i'm not sure whether they were able to get an audible at the line of scrimmage or whether in fact he just released from the line of scrimmage looking back at the quarterback hoping that assassin would stand watch his sister now there's pressure coming on him and this is a way to disrupt a great pass offense and that's pressuring the quarterback and so far the steelers have been able to do that that's number 54 hardy nicholson coming from the outside on the left of your screen here's foolish with a punt loan safety of lewis lips at the steeler 29 and here he comes looking for some kind of daylight couldn't find much and darted into the only hole he saw up to the 40 and the steelers take possession again nine yard return of the 39 yard punt well the steelers are getting pressure on the quarterback of which to something they were unable to do against the washington redskins and we will be right back [Music] well on the 10 of the ticker we have some early scores houston three nothing over the jets in the first and it's kansas city three nothing over the broncos in the first no score yet in the first quarter buffalo with new england green bay in miami the dolphins ten to nothing over the packers in the first and redskins seven nothing over the eagles and no score minnesota chicago steeler ball first down at their own 40. and let's see what bobby brister can do he sends a stone in motion the pitch back to the big running back jackson tries to hurdle over and they did get a couple of yards pretty good solid defensive flow on the part of the bengals at that time some other scores uh no score new orleans detroit in the first quarter phoenix and tampa bay gets phoenix three-nothing over the tampa bay buccaneers the way to defense an outstanding pass auction such as the cincinnati bengals is to run the football effectively when your own offense has the ball and i'm sure the steelers are looking to do that today because the bengals i need are to be tested in their line back and core they're fast linebackers they're light linebackers and i think the field is going to want to see if they can meet the run at the launch at the point of attack it'll be second and six to forty four that's stone and motion away from russia's blister back patrol bobby looks pretty good protection grill just to lift at about the 48 i think he's a bit shy reggie first down yardage velocity on the pass by brister you'll get a look now at the strong arm that brister has number six now i can fire the ball out to the right side and of course this man number 83 a former afc pro bowler is healthy for the first time in two years and he means a great deal to this pittsburgh steelers offense louis blitz i'll tell you another thing you'll not find he missed a first down yardage marker eddie very often a fumble and a pile up in the middle christopher just capped and go forward apparently on the keeper and it should be a first down it will be whenever you get that kind of yardage you need for first down why follow a hall of famer and that's what bristol did follow number 52 mike webster in his 15th year for the pittsburgh steelers the only remaining member of the steelers for super bowl years number 52 one of the all-time great sinners so they really move the bengal defensive line out of there that was a great surge in the part of the steelers first down at their own 48. jackson trying to get wide and you saw racing over there as hard as he could number 33 and that's dutch culture trailing the play and he helped make the tackle and they're going to spot it right around the bengals 45 when you look at ernest jackson david fulcher number 33 of the bengals is an interesting story he is 6'3 242 pounds and folks he is a safety he is one load to deal with and he is an asset for the bengals in their running game because there aren't a lot of safeties in this game that can play right up on the line of scrimmage and play like a linebacker and yet cover the defensive secondary as well as he does he had 12 tackles against the eagles and here comes second and seven of the 45 motion drifter fires and it is not going to be a complete attack he just bounces may have rushed it somewhat eric thomas was covering number 42 the rookie warren williams what happens well you have well take a look at the american leg yankees leading the red sox in the first inning [Music] when you have the number one quarterback in the league which is assassin and the number four quarterback in the league it's brister you expect a lot of points so far what have we had pretty good defensive battle two of them that's right hodges in the backfield and they've got two or three wide receivers that's carter who just kept moved in and moved on here on third and seven a lot of times incomplete oh he really fired that intending for lips and that ball was just maybe sailed a little bit reggie you might know more yeah the last thing you want if you're a receiver is to be come across the middle and have this pass thrown high this is what takes receivers out now watch number 83 lord slip runs a good pattern he comes back to the ball but it's high you see and you can get hurt actually phillips number 24 took it easy on louis lips right there i know a lot of quarterbacks that wouldn't have been so nice with him already wedding downfield for harry newsome's punt is eddie brown number 81 calls for the fair catch the 10-yard line and he makes it at the nine so the bengals have the football at that spot and uh the dealers with a two to nothing lead on an unusual safety they will probably show you a little bit later this afternoon now the bengals with the ball at their own nine [Music] and the bengals with the ball down at the roll nine the bengals had it the first time in their own five then they had up to 25 they have not been able to do a thing against the very aggressive and successful steeler defense so far and the same duo back there wilson and brooks and in motion i said brown here's the roll out and the gift goes to brooks steeler defense doing an outstanding job larry griffin among the leaders of the steeler tacklers still is ranked 28th in the national football league and pass defense doug williams last week threw for 430 yards against him steve pouler of the cowboys grew for over 300 against him so one of the reasons that they have had so much trouble is they have lack pressure on the quarterback keith willis their best defensive end is out for the year mike merriweather pro bowl linebacker is holding out and they haven't gotten pressure so the pressure you see here today on assistant is the best they've been able to come up with in the 1988 season he had to be a second down about nine and the handoff to brooke he found a hole ran into his old man at the 20-yard line or we might have busted that one ball rolls loose greg carr number 91 is given tackle credit 17-yard sprint on the part of james brooks great blocking on the perimeter here and an outstanding block by number 63 left of your screen joe walter watch him as he comes around 290 pounds and then brook good block there now brooke look at that mountain man there a big old texan in the way there brooks needed to just push him a little bit and uh of course fumble uh ground cannot cause a fumble as walter had an outstanding game last week against all pro reggie white of the philadelphia eagles didn't allow white a stat didn't mean sanchez number 28 well first of all the official has to determine whether it's a catchable ball it was so and you can see luffy sanchez making contact making flagrant contact with the receiver oh he's all over him there's no question that's been appearance i mean you can have contact but you can't have a mugging out there and i'm not biased anyway chuck i want you to understand that i like defensive back some of my best friends are defensive back and if you if you want to believe that i got a bridge it'll be first time same offensive unit operating it's brooks and well a reminder to our viewers that we'll be selecting the budweiser most valuable player for today's game at the conclusion of the game [Music] as you watched bloomberg science at number seven who has always been considered one of the top athletes at the position and has been somewhat inconsistent he's showing now that maybe in 1988 he's ready to step to the top of the class that's brookson walking out of the back here the strength of the bengals offense as you watch the 10-minute thicker or come back with my comment in a minute well the scores haven't changed a whole lot it's houston three nothing in the first over the jets three-nothing kansas city over the broncos in the first no score new england and uh the bills miami 17 to nothing over green bay looks like mourinho and his gang are suddenly coming to life skins 14 or nothing over the eagles 7-0 in minnesota and it's 7-0 lions over new orleans and 10-nothing phoenix first down 10 at brooks [Music] 47-yard line of the steelers take a look at the bengals as they begin to unfold james brooks number 21 running right inside of munoz and rhymers on the left side of the offense pringles have an outstanding offensive line and it is massive the deep van on the backfield is eddie brown and that's brown peeling off in motion and that's the big man wilson again well a defensive unit that had its problems in washington for the steelers seem to be fired up this afternoon against the bengals larry griffin led them that way they spot the ball about midfield for the difference when you play a washington you're talking about an afc team playing an nsf nfc team and they aren't as familiar with each other as these two teams are here today it's an afc central contest there's a lot of rivalry here and these teams know how important a game within the division is well he and brown come out wide to the left side and you notice that bengals did not get into any kind of a huddle they just came right up to the line of scrimmage and will go to work third down in about five world contact penalty flags the uh bengals are all in two and third down conversions so far and let's hear what the referee has to say that was tyrone stowe two-year veteran on over rutgers he was a free agent signed last year by the steelers this is the area defensively where pittsburgh has been having so much trouble [Music] you watch chuck noll who certainly isn't happy with that they had the bengals where they wanted them third and past the situation and you give up a first down with a penalty and that's one of those mistakes that uh you know is correctable it's concentration that sometimes leads to that or lack of it first down at the steeler 44 where the theories leading to nothing messiahs play action fake looking for a target and it's going to be incomplete a little mix up on the pattern and was almost picked off by dalton hall let's take a look at delton hall number 35 the bengals really want to go at him you can see he's wearing a cast on his right wrist he's not feeling too good right now i i didn't see anything and hall it's very difficult to play defensive back with one hand now you see if paul is going for the ball he might have jarred that wrist left hand well he can't break his ball the way he would like to because he only has one hand to do that but when you're trying to defend passes you've got only one hand a defensive back needs to use both hands for leverage and breaking up passes and teams have been throwing that hall with a lot of success in the early 1888-1988 season that also was an obvious mix-up between uh messiahs and his intended receiver he wasn't where he intended him to be and he threw the ball 10 or 15 yards beyond it coming up next our olympic coverage from seoul continues following nfl football we'll bring you up to date on the boxing action which has already been seen has seen a few upsets plus they'll be weightlifting flyweight class lifting almost three times their body weights overhead and that's coming up next the games of the olympiad only on nbc well coming out is delton hall and he seems to he seems to be pretty good there is tony dungy widely considered to be the leading candidate to be the first black head coach in the national football league i wish they'd hurry up because this guy is very talented he is left second down 10. here's the science they come with tractor and he hooks up nicely with mcgee at the 42-yard line he just couldn't get out of there what a heck of a defensive play by lucy saying but watch the crowd again see you can catch him he did with a road block at about the 34-yard line boomerang and a penalty flag is dropped down here at the line of scrimmage hold on there are two penalty flags back at the line of scrimmage nifty looking interception in the part of woodson the gentleman in the white house and he's got stone back there he also has earned ernest jackson that lifts wide to the right side for the first down at the bengal 33 christopher wants to put it up goes for broke lips no incomplete pretty good coverage down the way by louis phillips second down 10 steelers still at the bengal 33. once the good coverage by number 24 phillips running strides from the stride with lip when he sees lip looks back he looks fat and breaks up the pass [Music] not the kind of a start uh bubby would like to have when you take a look at the way the pittsburgh steelers play historically over the years their quarterbacks aren't going to have a high passing percentage they like to get the football down the field bradshaw and all the rest anybody who's ever played here on the nall they want to throw the ball vertically and you're not going to have a lot of number 43 is ernest jackson in the slant to the left side didn't pick up a lot of ground before the bengal just jammed up the hole come right the nose tackle nose guard pittsburgh the steelers are two of four in third down attempts and here comes one rodney carter and merrill hodge come into the backfield for the steelers right now at the 31 third down and eight charlie lockett another new number 89 is out there and this is kind of a spread let's see what grister and the steelers can do looking for a target incomplete and he's intending for ouija thompson who was trying to get free of his defender down around the five yard line and just could not do it gary anderson eric thomas here here comes anderson this is one of the finest kickers in football almost an automatic from this distance well it's [Music] spotted at 39 that's a 49-yard boot news from the holder waiting for the snap okay spock's okay the pick is on the way we'll know in a moment no so the steelers will have to be content with our two to nothing lead time on the clock showing just uh 22 seconds remaining in this the first period and if uh you know you want to make me a small wager reggie the score is gonna be two nothing at the end of the first quarter this afternoon i might have accepted the bet well you know i'm surprised as if gary anderson that he missed and he missed that kick uh very badly he usually is very good from that distance this is one of the not only in the game today but of all time his numbers are very gaudy in terms of where he ranks with the best that ever played this game so the bengals have the ball with 22 seconds left at their own 30. [Music] eddie brown in motion and again if the tacklers of james brooks is made by tyrone stowe seems like i've been calling his name frequently and also david little number 50. that might be the end of the period the gain is out near the 35-yard line [Music] that's about it uh we have come to the end of the first period of play at three rivers stadium and it's been a kind of a surprising uh uh first quarter in only one respect and that would be the score steelers two and the bengals nothing that's nelson hall number 35 to steal his cornerback and they say he has a groin pull it's very difficult for a quarterback to continue to play if he has a growing pull because there's so many things he has to do to keep up with wide receivers so he might be a liability if he goes back into the ball game with this injury well from the uh sidelines uh reggie rucker we have been told that they do expect him to play they do expect him to come back the first thing i would do if i were a wide receiver and i were facing him i would tell my quarterback pull me aside and look there's a guy out here that is less than 100 let's see how good he can play under the circumstances now we'll take a look at some of the stats from the tree river the bengals are 27 yards steelers 25 passing yardage 20 to 5 47 total yards for the bengals and 30 for the steals but the steelers lead two to nothing here we go first play of the second quarter that's james brooks trying to get it out the steelers string it out nicely and taken down crossing the 35-yard line he's a big number 97 all over and that's aaron jones number one draft pick this year all right watch going to the left of your screen you're going to see number 22 larry griffin forces the issue here number 97 aaron jones outstanding play it's a fellow that can play a lot of positions at 6-4 255 he can play linebacker he can play defensive end they are running a lot of defenses to take advantage of the skills of aaron jones wilson and brooks back there all for three and third down conversion so far wolf they got him again that was williams gerald williams that broke through for the steelers well the one thing we can't hear now is the cadence call of boomer ethyson who is probably using his experience to pull the steelers outside and it'll be out at the bengal 41-yard line right now coaches used to say all you have to do is watch the football don't leave until it leaves incidentally we have not mentioned but the ajr patch that the steelers are wearing of course most of you would recognize it in memory of the late great arthur rooney truly one of the great men in the history of this game all right first down at the 41. that's brown in motion again and to the up back and that brooks busts through to about his own 47 or eight yard line and it's obtained by tyrone stowe he's having a pretty good game defensively sanchez helped out no it's like having money in the bank when you have a player like james brooks and you run him behind the all-pro anthony munoz on the left side number 78 big yardage big pickup six yards the point that reggie rucker makes is mr munoz as we see a very fine replica of the arthur j rooney on the screen right now munoz six six 278 pounds and incidentally as a tackle eligible he's caught four touchdown pass second down fourth the bengals 47. boomer looks shallow drop goes deep leading the receiver brooks incomplete and that's pretty good play on the part of brooks too he's getting a complaint from rod woodson that he just kind of stalled him and interfered with his opportunity to get to it woodson was a little unhappy well he isn't going out run number 26. that's basically all that chad it is is an attempt to outrun the cornerback watch now rook number excuse me brown number 81 used his body very wisely to keep the faster woodson away from the interception that was a good play by eddie brown now third down to four at the 47. coleman the big tight end in motion with the football came bryan hinkle and the stop is right at the 45 james brooks got the ball and hinkle all at the same time brian hinkle has been playing in the shadow of a lot of all pros while he's been with the pittsburgh steelers of course now playing in the shadow of mike merriweather who isn't here so maybe hinkle number 53 will begin to get some of that attention for the outstanding play he has given to steal his organization scott paul is ready to punt and lewis lips will be the safety man for the steelers down on the steeler 15. [Music] kind of a driving pot that didn't get too high in the air gets by lit looks around now besides i'm going to try to make the best of what's a nasty situation and it's getting a little nastier as he is taken down at the 11. and the steelers will have the football at that spot a 44-yard punt now we've got a lot of time remaining in the first half over 13 minutes but it's still the score you see on the screen steelers 2 bengals nothing [Music] dealers have the football at their own eleven and a new number on the board for you to look at now is wide receiver mike kenneth number 81 lewis lips up set out wide to the left side unless same running backs jackson and dwight stone a 43 and a 20. there goes lips through the backfield and the stone and he tried to hurdle and get up to a little bit of a opening and could not quite make it [Music] well let's uh got some good news for you and exciting news let's go back for an nfl update and we'll do that for you right now hello everyone at the meadowlands this afternoon the jets have taken a 14-3 lead over houston now in the second quarter and interception sets up a 44-yard pass from ken o'brien to wesley walker to the aid freeman neil does the honors a touchdown 14-3 jets in the second second and five this is stone on the carry trying to get around the corner he jumped out and the mayhem and does have first down yardage a heck of an individual effort on the part of white stone one of the areas that the steelers felt they need improvement was in team speed and dwight stone offensively provides them that home run threat on every place and they've never had that here i mean they never had a player as fast as stone is and when he gets in the open then he can really do damage to a secondary well lips is coming out as you see at the bottom of the screen is still stone and it's still ernie jackson gotham is a tight end mike hindit number 81 is the new wide receiver the rollout by bristol bobby has plenty of time looking is he going to go with it yes no he slides and he took a heck of a good lick as he went into a slide i don't think bristol wanted to run that football he wanted to throw the football but he's a right-hander and he was running to his left and he could not get his arm back in time to throw the football so lewis sippy was running down the left side open didn't receive the football and of course christopher had to run with it luigi thompson splits off on the left side and he's second to nine now to steal at 29. [Music] and not too much of a hole to get through dutch culture made this i think i said 12 tackles last week again makes another one here dwight stone at 60 to 188 pounds in his second year from middle tennessee state in a 40-yard dash they say he is every bit as fast as rod woodson all right let's watch chrome ride number 69 dealing with a double team block webster does a pretty effective job of stealing from ryan from ride number 69 is the only defensive lineman to lead his team in tackles last year it's third one at about 33 for the steelers jackson waiting back there gets the handoff and he's got the first stop they're saying fumbled uh-oh that's right steel bingo's we have the first down without possession and the bengals pick up the ball now the steelers had this happen to them last week against the redskins ernest jackson had a fumble which caused them either seven points or three points you'll see it again right in the middle of your screen you see the good blocking it's only necessary to pick up enough room for first down that's jackson fumbling again check that that's number 43 ernest jackson fumbling the ball again here well the bengals had the football at the steeler 37 and a great opportunity for assaisment and his teammates who have been just shut out so far brown in motion and the gift goes to number 32 stanley wilson on a straight slant and he powers a couple of yards [Music] like ben thomas was around the ball number 69 for the steelers stanley wilson has been a big asset for the cincinnati bengals he was a guy a couple of years ago who was spending for a year because of his involvement with drugs sam white says when stanley wilson is in the ball game our offense is so much more effective because he gives us that speed out of the backfield that larry kennedy who played that position last year didn't give him he's a good blocker he catches the football well he's an excellent compliment to james brooke second down six for 33 and this is james brooks trying to get around the farm and he's done it for the 25 and inside and goes out of bounds run out of bounds by woodson good run by james brooks who has the speed to get out on the corner and you'll see number 32 stanley wilson out there blocking for him watch brooke good move inside larry griffin number 22 misses the tackle you see wilson and our hillary downfield blocking which receivers should get brooks is now eight carries for 47 yards reggie and his first down at the steeler 24. lone setback will be stanley wilson and the give goes to stanley right down the middle and he is inside the 15-yard line before the steelers are able to contain woodson up on the top of the pile larry griffin down on the bottom and it'll be a pretty close to a first down they're going to take a look and it is a first down [Music] well the yankees 3-1 over the red sox in the second inning at fenway this afternoon [Music] there's sam white's very happy right now with the way his team is running the football they've done away with a lot of the gadgetry and the gimmicks that they've used in past years they're being very basic this year they're letting their talent do the work the gift goes to nobody on play action fake and he's hit wilson and stan is going to go down the near sideline as a touchdown yes sir it is a touchdown that's the man we've been talking about stanley wilson sam white says that he probably is the real reason why they are moving the football as well as they are because he takes the pressure off of his size and in the passing game with all the things that he can do out of the backfield watch it again now assassin with the fake reverse and number 91 is greg carr now he's got coverage on wilson and he can't get there not only that he misses the tackle linebackers can't miss tackles and of course stanley wilson into the end zone uncontested i will watch the point after to give the bengals a 7-2 lead get it away untouched looks all right the officials agree and the bengals who who trailed all the way through now have gotten out in front by a 7-2 score there's assassin talking with stanley wilson wilson from university of oklahoma remember him in the wishbone formation there's this dyson with the quick pass out there to stanley wilson he breaks the tackles which is a mark of a good running back well they went four plays covered 37 yards in a minute and 37 seconds and the bengals now are leading there's a score cincinnati seven pittsburgh two we would like you to look at that thanks ball score and we promise you this time we've got it right it's the red sox three the yankees one in the second inning and we apologize for that here's breach with a kick off and down on the goal line they've got stone and woodson and it's headed over there toward woodson at about the steeler five remember this fella can really fly oh look at this look at this can he get around that corner take him down at the 35 37 yard line a heck of a good return of 32 yards ricky dixon now see that draft choice made the tackle that's a better play than the yardage that woodson got out of it he took too long to come back up field with his speed he's got to take that ball and go now and he looked too much to the outside because had he made that decision sooner he'd been on that corner there's no way anybody would have caught him meryl hodge is in that backfield for the steelers right now behind brister in motion that's lips and a good play action fake brister has time drills and he's got his receiver and down goes stone at about the 41-yard line of the bengals eric thomas gets the tackle credit after a 22-yard gain that time you see the good protection up front the steelers keep everybody out of the face of bubby brister and there was an outstanding pattern run by the back out of the backfield who found the open space and gave brister something to throw at you know quarterbacks need the receivers to get separation from the defensive back and provide a target that they can throw to many times you see incompletions it's not always the quarterback's fault first down at the bengal 41 that's gotham the big tight end and this is hodge on the pitch back tell you he ran into a rough neighborhood didn't he joe kelly made the tackle of the penalty flag has been dropped way across the field in the ball game now merrell hearts number 33 that's joe kelly number 58 looks like a shot to the head i'm not sure i'll wait to see what they call first round draft choice a couple of years ago penalty on tunes number 62 of these steelers probably moving a little too soon but the steelers didn't pick up any oddity so the bengals declined the penalty second down still 10 right there it was 41 yard line still got high still stone on that split backfield unless hogs in motion and gives the stone hinnon lost the ball and recovered i believe it's bingo fighting for it two on one the bengals indicate they had it and that's exactly what will happen according to the bengals and that's now reaffirmed by the officials on the spot the second time the steelers have had the ball in excellent field position and they fumbled meryl harge was in the ball game because ernest jackson fumbled the ball now let's take a look at dwight stone the speaker draw play he gets through the first wave but that tim krumri whose hands are ever present it appears that yanked the arm of stone and stone lost control of the football and when you're on that pile that ball belongs to anybody that can get it and the one holding it when the official separates you is the one that gets it bengal ball at their own 42 leading at seven to two and the thousands ready to go again on first he's going to put it up a lot of time now he drops it and missed connection coming across with james brooks number 21 and he just let him a little too much let's take a look at the 10 minute ticker right now and look at the jets over houston 14-3 in the first 3-3 denver in kansas city in the second three-nothing the bills over the patriots in the second it's miami 24-7 over the packers in the second 17-nothing the skins over the eagles in the second 14-7 and it's 7-0 detroit over new orleans and thirteen nothing phoenix over tampa bay here comes the second and ten and the give to brooks and he was just stood up at the line and never could find any daylight 97 jones got there the steelers had one outstanding player in number 97 rookie aaron jones he is all over the field what a talented young fella jones is he'll be a linebacker he'll be a defensive end right now he's up on the line and cincinnati is all for four reggie and third down conversions and that's one area that the steelers had been very weak in they were 60 in third down situations which is too high to play defense in the national football league [Applause] long count by a size i'm hoping to draw him off again and here's his passing effort under some pressure he's got his receiver number 82 that's rodney holman and holmen goes out of bounds at the steelers 40. that's the first third down conversion for the bengals today a 16 yard saws just the way you draw it up if siason recognized the defense he got excellent protection from the offensive line and watch holmen who is a legitimate 4-6 tight end this is one of the outstanding tight ends in the game but he's under-publicized he doesn't get a lot of recognition stays with that football and when you have a tight end at 6-4 240 pounds that can run that way in the secondary you've got a lethal weapon oh true first down bengals steeler 40. the bengals show us a different kind of an offensive set not a bit they run you know both teams are having trouble handling the football at times you know the officials are charged with the responsibility of rubbing down the footballs before each game there's a there's a very slick coating on the footballs before they're played with and the home team is responsible for rubbing these things down sometimes maybe you don't get as good a job done as you like because it's not only the stealers that are fumbling the ball the bengals are mishandling the ball somewhat also let's watch assassin down to 15 looking for somebody just incomplete he was intending for his running back wilson under 32 down around the 30. so we come up with another one of the third down efforts greg carr putting some pressure on the size third down in about 14 to 15 yards the dingle should go with the no huddle what they call their attack offense and really they have done quite well with this kind of an offense they have been able to they also call this echo if you can look at the entire team you'll see them each relaying the signals out to each other particularly when you can't hear in a stadium like this one [Applause] see there's a problem with it penalty flag is down messiah trying to run now decided to get rid of it and that is brown down around the five and he was just overthrown see what the penalty flag is all about looks like munoz moved after coming to a set well we look to see if the echo effect that reggie's talking about the outside man passes his left shoulder all right watch the left of your screen you're going you won't see it but munoz has already moved out of his three-point stance once the offensive line comes to a three-point stance it can no longer move until the ball is snapped daryn jordan rushes in there for the steelers hardy nickerson here comes the third down and 20. and the steelers had their nickel nickel defense in the ball game i'd be very careful if i were exciting about putting this ball up because this is the defense that the steelers want to play and aspires he's in trouble under great pressure and is dropped back at his own 37-yard line hardy nickerson number 54 who just came in was the man responsible [Applause] let's watch nickerson coming from your right side a second year linebacker from california and science and under pressure and of course nickerson is the guy that caused the facts darren jordan is the man number 55 that was credited with the fact and we're waiting for scott fuller just pond and lips is also waiting down at the steeler 25. he got it off under some pressure lips is trying to get to it has that's 30. and he is going to be out of bounds without the football somewhere in the vicinity of the 37-yard line of the steelers a 37 yard punt well it's the visiting cincinnati bengals leading by a count of 7-2 and we're going to get back to more action on the field in just a moment ernest jackson in somewhat of a controversy this past week he blamed bobby brister for the fumble and the philadelphia game bristol said well i thought it was jackson but if he wants to blame me i'll take the blame well it can be no doubt in the last series jackson fumbled that football and now he has a seat on the bench next to noel and meryl hodge number 33 has replaced him we have a new number to look out too 89 lockett is out of the wide receiver to the left side and that's the big tight end golfers moving and here's bristol now he's going to run he's got plenty of room 40 five out of bounds very smart decision oh he piled into the bench he seems to be all right i don't know about the other person down on the bench that's what they find very exciting about bubby brister he has the ability to run out of danger now what you would like now watch it here now see receivers don't want to see a quarterback do this now once you buy time now throw the football find somebody to throw the football now he's young and strong and he can get away from this sort of thing but as he plays in this league he isn't going to have those kinds of skills forever he's going to have to learn to to buy time and then throw the football pretty good collision he had with hardy nickerson at the bench too but he seems none of the worst for and the same is true in nickerson first down steeler ball 48 and they're trailing 7-2 that's todd and that's stone he attracted a few white jerseys led by leon white number 51. everybody knew that the bengals would be potent offensively in 1988 the area of this football team that they've been striving to improve has been their defense number 51 is leo white who's playing that outside linebacker position as a result of the suspension of emmanuel king and leon white is doing a very good job of containing the run and playing the position second and 13 at the steeler 45 and brisker looks for time but he lets it go incomplete and a heck of an effort by charles lockett two-year veteran from cal state he was drafted number three back in 87. the guys right on top and were eric thomas 22 and number 41 solomon wilkins well it doesn't seem to be a good afternoon for the yankees the red sox lead 7-1 in the third inning steelers are trying a lot of different people at that split in position luigi thompson started there charles rocket replaced him and now troy johnson a very very fast man from southern university is out there [Music] and he threw in the grass for the tackle and it is nickel downfield at the 40-yard line by charlie lockett well the bengals aren't going to like this they're claiming that bristol should have been called in the grass excellent effort by blister as he got rid of the football you can see how strong his arm is now watch brister going to the left you're going to see number 70 can't see the number of the player but brister is on his way down and releases the football and it'll be a first down at the 40-yard line of the bengals oh how smooth he made it look they're not booing they're just saying louie because everybody is happy to see louis slipped back in uniform healthy this is the measure of a wide receiver when you run across the field the national football league looking back one way know you're going to get hit still maintain possession and look at those hits that is what it's all about if you're playing wide receiver joey klinksgales is now wide to the right side of the steeler set split backfield for brister first down at the bengal 20 and the gib goes to hodge and he wedges it for a couple of yards near the 17-yard line we are rapidly approaching the two-minute mark here at three river stadium and the ball is being spotted at the 17. 17-yard line now the steelers with a great opportunity to do something about changing that score in possession of the 17 and we'll be right back that's the timeout situation steelers in possession at the bengals 17-yard line and they've got a couple of different wide receivers 89 charlie lock at 88 joey clinch scales nothing the matter with ouija thompson he just is on the sideline at the moment and lockett and uh plinkscales are wide to the right side of the set it is a second and seven at the bengals 17. you can see richard is very angry with himself because he threw that football too hard you don't have to throw the football that hard when you have a back who is turning inside you want to throw him a catchable pad and see he knows he guns this thing the receiver has no chance to catch that football because he's thrown too hard and that's what you have when you have a young player with a strong arm the most difficult thing to get him to do is to put some touch on that pass to throw it softly it'll be third and seven at the bengal 17 brisker will put it up rodney carter inside the 10-yard line and that's enough for a steeler first down i'll tell you one thing for bobby bristol he's a quick learner that's a better pass that's a pass after the halfback can handle when you're running inside that way and you're looking for spaces to just settle down and you want your quarterback to be looking at you all the way and give you a pass that you can catch all the whistles are sounding and we [Music] well this telecast is presented by authority of the national football league and it is intended for the private use of our audience any rebroadcast for other use of the telecast without the express written consent of the pittsburgh steelers in the national football league is prohibited and this is the property of the national football league this game is cincinnati bengals and pittsburgh steelers and all right [Music] williams andrew brister iii they call me buddy sisters and apparently one of the sisters couldn't pronounce his name [Music] and well they wound up with buddy oh well hello you know a lot of something like that back back down the eastern shore of maryland where i would love to spend a lot of time usually the oldest sun is called referred to as bubba and i don't know whether they were just you know changing it a little bit nonetheless here we go first down goal steelers at the cincinnati bangalore fumbled and a big pile up and it looks like the steelers may have recovered merrill hoge cosbrother among others that time is now requested by the steelers stopping the clock with a minute 20. that's pure self-destruction you just cannot mishandle the football there he is and his anxiety to back away from the sitter he just doesn't has the ball as he backs away and you must ensure the center snap this is making chuck noll grow old in a hurry here's brister talking with tom moore the offensive coordinator of the pittsburgh steelers number 13 is steve bono and you can see number [Music] six listen very intently as more tells them what to do here second down you're on about your 10 yard line the thing to do is to make sure you use your back you don't have to throw the ball you don't have to force the ball to the outside people as a matter of fact if i were brister i all he can do is just hope that he has the right defense to call on it'll be second and goal at the bengal nine the bengals have recovered that man number 33 david fulcher i told you he is a low 240 pound safety and the problem with that is when you have a safety up at the line of scrimmage most offensive pass protection schemes don't give him the kind of attention he needs because most safeties aren't 240 pounds and he literally decapitated christopher boy doesn't he though watch this is the blind side of bristol princeton number six never sees number 33 folks are coming i don't know about attacking the head up there that's a little bit uncalled for but it's a great play by folk through the strong safety and the bengals have the ball at their own 16 and this is james brooks over the 20 to about the 23 loopy sanchez up to make the tackle and woodson also helped him amazing balance by james brooks 180 pounds breaking tackles still remaining and keeping his balance well the steelers have to be just about as frustrated as they can be they've had excellent field positions they've had the ball in cincinnati territory there's some more talking to bobby brister and the steelers keep turning the football over you cannot give up the football and that's brooks again and he knifes through what was not a very large hole and bangs that rams it out out over the 30 to about the 32. the bengals continue to go without a huddle if they get another first down or anything near it i think they'll try for at least to put jim breach in makable field goal position and boomer come out of the shotgun looking for somebody to throw to plenty of time drills it over the middle threw it behind the man and he still caught it and it's going to be fighting to get out of bounds and is able to get out of bounds and stop the clock looks like it was eric katus number 84. well they only have five seconds remaining in the half and sam white knows that of course they have no opportunity to attempt the field goal so what i think they'll do is probably put the ball up in the end zone well it's a first down five ticks of the clock remain in the first half and it's the bengals seven on the steelers too all right they've got three wide receivers on the right here let's see if the science has just let it go well he's got some time here it is he did look how far he's thrown that football oh almost eddie brown made a heck of an effort oh wow he had to throw that football close to 70 yards in the air all right what an arm let's take one more look at this and then there's power in the throw watch where is science and is when he releases the football the line of scrimmage was about the 47 yard line well i thought there it is all right now he's released this ball somewhere around the 35-yard line deep into the end zone and of course that's just the hail mary play that's why they call it that well that's the story of the first half of three rivers stadium and it's been cut again well this kickoff is sponsored by budweiser the king of beers anderson ready to kick let's see who will come back [Music] stanford jennings number 36 to the 23-yard line and you're ready to go in the second half of the bengals in possession 21 yards see the spotted at the 23. [Music] tackle credit goes to darren jordan one of the linebackers he's a rookie from uh northeaster [Music] this past year [Music] oh but a good catch by rodney pullman over on the far side of the field and as reggie rutgers suggested they are going to go to work rapidly there's a man looking for pro bowl recognition rodney holman makes an excellent catch between two defenders pick up the first down 82 in the huddle gentlemen that the reggie's talking about six three two thirty eight two forty number three draft pick and eighty two lone setback that's wilson this is brooks in motion he got a lot of company maybe they're going to give him a gain about to the 39 bring up second down and nine here are the stats to look at in the first half of play and they're not that impressive wasn't much of an offensive show total yards about even i think the key factor here is turnovers the steelers with four that gives the bengals a plus three turnover ratio anytime you can end the ball game and the plus side of the takeaway giveaway more than likely you'll win a football game the steelers are minus three right now and that is a very ominous thing indeed [Music] that's eddie brown in motion i think kicks it back out the other way to take away but and the gift goes to pope brooks and he got matt coming in by ben thomas number 69 [Music] you're going to see the steelers taking control at the line of scrimmage watch the penetration watch the black shirts get into the backfield you can see ben thomas number 69 clean from his block it makes a good tackle to stop brooks [Applause] taking a long time to get it off and he just does down the middle incomplete and his intended receiver was jim brooks he was there but the passover throne one of the things i did in my hotel room this morning as i awakened was i tuned in in time to see some of the olympics i saw the russians lose to the yugoslavians i'm so upset might not be the only one the english lobbyists looked very good [Music] plus the u.s team last night the spanish team by 44 points david robinson and an excellent game i'm still a long way to go but what a great kick it is to watch the olympia rod woodson is waiting for the punt out of the lane nicely bearcats requested and made by rod and he slides at about the 34. steelers have the football at their own 34-yard line speaking of the olympics that'll be coming up next our olympic coverage from seoul continues following nfl football we'll bring you up to date on the boxing action which has already seen some upsets plus weightlifting flyweight class lifting almost three times their body weights overhead that's coming up next the games of the olympic olympiad only on nbc the steelers are going with two tight ends and they've brought ernest jackson back into the ball game they attend to get real physical with the bengals right now [Music] play action fake christopher looking for a target over the middle and it's taken down on the 40-yard line ernest jackson on the receiving end and the tackle credit goes to joe kelly 58. spotted to the 41. the thing that's so beneficial about playing two two tight ends is that the bengals defense really doesn't know which is designated the strong side so you can control the kind of coverage you get from the defensive team by running two tight ends and the steelers are running that right now now ouija thompson is wide to the left side of the steelers set on second and three from their own 41. jackson out of there in motion the pitch to dwight stone gets a block around the corner first down and then almost to midfield solomon wilcox again on the tackle they're going to spot this near the steeler 48-yard line [Music] steelers will come back now with two wide receivers and they bring them both to the same side that's klingscale and also ouija thompson first and ten at the 48. [Music] i think jackson now is concentrating so much on not fumbling that [Music] he isn't really an effective runner when you know if you have a running back who has fumbled a couple of times in the ball game and now he has to run the football using both hands well he doesn't have the same leverage that he has before and he becomes less effective because he's losing his confidence not only did he lead the steelers in rushing but he ran for a thousand yards at san diego he ran for a thousand yards in philadelphia made the pro bowl in both places and then was cut by philadelphia well if he rushes for another thousand yards with a steeler he'll steal as he'll be the first one in the history of the league to rush for a thousand with three different teams well you know what he says don't worry be happy okay white stone and he dives for about a yard again joe kelly one of the very active linebackers around the ball [Music] third down coming and the steelers are converted four of eight here's the ticker look at the jets 28 the three over houston in the second wow 10 10 14 to 3 new england over buffalo and it's the skins 14 to 3 over the eagles 17 to 7 minnesota for the bears at halftime 24-14 new orleans to 7 or rather detroit 14 to 7 over new orleans and 20 to 10 phoenix over tampa bay at the 49 of the bengals third down about 7. hold on a minute rodney i don't want you to go over there he's going to line up taking the timeout if he doesn't hurry first third deep drop lets it go and coming back with the ball making a heck of it grab his lips and they're going to spot him at the 39-yard line of the bengals that's something you just can't teach a receiver he either has the gift to make catches like that or he doesn't louis lips went down ran the pattern and then he came back to the quarterback separating himself from the defensive back and of course brister has that ball high i'm sure he's not happy with how high he's throwing the football here are the steelers at the bengal 39 with a first down but still the bengals seven the steelers two we're nine minutes into the nine minutes remaining in the third period [Music] of the big title the gifted white stone and the quick hitter is through there for a couple of tough yards about the 33 of the bengals kumrai makes the tackle that's a trademark pittsburgh steelers running game get that ball upside inside watch number 79 ringsta with with the trap number 20 is dwight stone great speed good yardage second down about four [Music] stone is carried nine times for 35 and ernest jackson seven times for 22. and here come the steelers [Music] and steve jackson moving and he's got the pitch back turns the corner and dives inside the 30 and a penalty flag is thrown right into the stack made the tackle we have a steeler injured on the play it looks like john rainstrom greenstream the number one draft choice out of temple a couple of years ago 86 unlike steeler lineman really he's six five 280 most dealer [Music] wolfley was caught holding for the steelers and the ball will come back most of the steeler offensive linemen are built like wolfely 6-1 265 terry long 511 275 so greenster is a bigger fella in there well you look at that score and we're going to be back to the action in a moment as you see the injury to the guard john reinstra is to the right leg ankle area this is the site you hate to see you never want to see this but rather than take any sort of a chance that you try to immobilize the leg and we'll take him off for x-rays and treatment and when we get positive word from the steeler bench as to the extent of the injury we'll pass along yes reg marine stroke two years ago broke a foot and missed most of the season now watch the right side of your screen brainstorm is number 79 and you're going to see ernest jackson roll up on the back of the legs of john ringstra now i was just saying he had a broken foot two years ago [Music] he's also been out uh missed some time with some ulcer problems chuck so he's had some tough times in his first couple of years here as a member of the pittsburgh steelers from temple [Music] well he'll get a good hand from the sellout crowd at three river stadium it's just it's it's always unfortunate no matter how the injury occurs but uh the ironic part of it is here's a case of an injury that was caused inadvertently by his teammate tackled and just rolled into well they're going to go with a rookie at that position now germany dawson number 63. he was drafted to number two this year reggie out of kentucky he's got good size 2 6-2 279. all right ready to go it will be steeler ball and that's the replacement right there number 63 through monty dawson second down 14 for the steelers and the ball spotted at the bengal 43. [Applause] quick release to gothard oh what a tough patch and he's lost the ball and it down that far sideline number 41 and that's wilcox and he has run out of bounds deep downfield but what are they going to do they say no catch i don't think they can call no catch because the definition of a catch is possession of the ball and having both feet planted on the ground and that was a completed pass whether that i think what they're going to call is the ground cannot cause a fumble watch brister now fire this ball in there great velocity moving backwards that shows the arm strength now you see okay that's we we if we could slow that down a little bit maybe we might be able to see that incomplete pass they're going to call that an incomplete pass that's what it is we'll know we're wondering whether or not they're reviewing it upstairs they are watching here now he has that now he's got to get one foot down he has to have two feet down no that is an incomplete pass because he did not have two feet on the ground here are the officials who are looking at the replay and i'm sure that their decision will agree with reggie rucker and it has well i'm sure the steelers are very very happy about that third down still 14 at the 43. hodge is a lone back in there behind uh that's head coach chuck noll most of you recognized a gourmet line facebook likes to fly his own airplane or dave brister ready to throw has plenty of time and magee makes the grab the 85 troy johnson excuse me troy johnson number 85 makes the grab and goes out of bounds and it'll be first down on the ball to be spotted at the 10. ricky dixon brister had plenty of time and made a great throw to troy johnson troy johnson a veteran of two nfl seasons with the cardinals and he played also with the denver goal of the usfl we told you how fast he was he once ran the 40 in 4.32 seconds steelers felt they needed more speed at the wide receiver position and they're looking for someone to play opposite lewis lips they may have found someone and that's the big man again jackson for a couple of the tough yards now what the steelers have to be thinking about down here more than anything else is not turning the football over to the cincinnati bengals they have been in this position a couple of times today and they have literally given the ball back to the bengals i'm sure brister in the huddle and this will come with maturity and experience is saying whatever you do fellas protect the football second down [Applause] [Music] he's got lips in the end zone touchdown steelers [Music] he ought to be mining happy and that was an excellent throw on the part of the we talked about how important lewis lips is to the pittsburgh steelers offense in a game three years ago lewis lipp scored on a pass scored on a kick return and he also scored on a reverse so he has scored against the bengals in three different ways in a previous game and we see the point after touchdown is good that's a 180 consecutive [Music] there's been bad blood between these two teams for some time now as you take a look at louis vuitton pattern nicely thrown passed by bobby brister one of the participants for the steelers was offensive lineman terry long number 74 and there are two flags down with but the steelers who uh battle back now to take a lead and this is the first time that they've been in front since that safety some time ago we'll be back that is the story and the steelers are now ready to uh put it to the bengals that's the story on the scoring drive anderson will kick it off [Applause] [Music] trio of a return man for the cincinnati bengals and it'll be stanford jennings in the middle and to his left side will be barney bussey and uh on the other side icky woods [Music] [Applause] all right let's watch anderson down the middle and that's jennings 15. oh what a collision at the 15-yard line looks like jordan number 55. that's who it was darren jordan the previous penalty you heard were unsportsmanlike conduct calls on both the steelers and the bengals and they were offsetting penalties and no damage done well here comes the siason he's down a couple of points now nine seven of the steelers and he's got james brooks and wilson in the backfield all the time in the world now he lets it go and here is number 85 and that's mcgee making the grab and getting an extra yard out of it so they now jump out whoa we've got another couple of penalty flags thrown gerald williams of the steelers reacted and i think they're going to throw him out of the football game he has to go there's no way you can allow that kind of conduct on the football field and let him remain in the ball game personal foul against the steelers of course we didn't see what happened before that but he really took her let's wait for tom dooley they have a personal file on this side after the out of bounds completion number 98 so that means they're going to tack on 15 more to the completion all right here's the play to mcgee it was outstanding protection for assais and if you give him that much time he's going to find people downfield but what we don't see occurred further back downfield the personal foul on gerald williams at the steeler 38 the bengals with a heck of an opportunity 6 38 remaining in the third messiahson and he gets the number 32 stanley wilson and wilson finds a little rough going around the 35-yard line tim johnson among others brian hinkle 53 sam white having an opportunity to get off to the best start in a long long time this is already the best start for the bengals since 1981 the year they went to the super bowl and if they could go 3-0 it would be the best start i'm thinking something like 15 years and they would really have a stranglehold on the division lead because the oilers who are also 2-0 are losing to the jets brooks and motion the gift to brooks dives near the 30-yard line rod woodson coming up to meet the play that was a big pass completion from messiah since mcgee earlier it gives the bengals an opportunity now to start opening up this offense of theirs and they can really become diversified in this part of the field [Music] paul brown on the left one of the sons mike brown pete brown i'm not sure which one but probably mike brown on the right well it's uh wilson and brooks has the setbacks in the short yardage third down about two [Applause] that's wilson he's got the two and inside the steeler 25 tackle credit hardy nickerson that's why the bengals are so dangerous they have this explosive big play offense in which they they're never really out of a ball game because they had so many weapons on offense mcgee collinsworth he wasn't here brooke eddie brown stanley wilson you can't double team all of these players [Music] well they've got ed brown to the right side the other way it's mcgee brooks and wilson has setbacks now messiahson wants wilson or brooks to move from the left to the right side of it gives it to brooks tries to get around the corner and just couldn't do it number 22 larry griffin was flying in there he got some help from tim johnson number 78. [Music] they're going to spot this ball just about the 24 so it'll be second down maybe 11. a little while ago we had a picture of uh well let's take a look at another score from fenway the red sox 7 the yankees three the red sox have won two out of uh the first three is that's a seventh inning score second down at 11. mcgee wide left the other way it's brown same duo in the backfield brooks and wilson shallow drop a pump fake a throw and he's got the tight end and that's holmen and rod goes out of bounds inside the 20. rod wood woodson knocks him out you know i believe that with chris collinsworth out and collinsworth is one of the really fine receivers in the national football league but what it does it has made esciences more aware of all of the members of this offensive team of his and he is beginning to use a player like rodney holman more and i think the bengals are just going to be that much more difficult to defeat if they start using people like holmen and mcgee and brooke and all the people they have on this offensive game well they flip off the white house mcgee to the right side the other way it's brown second and four you get to wilson good second effort and he got inside the 15 but he's got to get down to about the 13 for a first down let's see if sam white plays this one by the book he's short of the first down it's going to be fourth down he's got an outstanding kicker and jim breach he should and he is going to go for the field goal all right this is jim breach 10-year veteran from california signed as a free agent back in 80 that's a few years ago right [Music] [Applause] and we'll watch the field goal the spots about the 23 a 33-yard effort well officially call it a 32 spot snap out of the way looks all right from up here the officials agree and so the bengals have taken the lead not a great big one but a lead they are now leading by a count of 10 to 9 with 3 18 remaining in the third quarter [Music] and the bengals with a 10 to 9 lead will kick it off that's jim breach down on the goal line you've got a couple of receivers white stone and rod woodson well remember preach doesn't get the ball deep and these are the two fastest players on the steelers team and they have very dangerous return people he's kicking it along the ground they're going to let it bounce and well dwight stone i think is no it turns out to be woodson he can't find any room trying to get around the corner and i don't know you've got some penalty flags thrown in there what could be a late hit out of bounds number 36 stanford jennings and also tim english was also in there number 92. see those are unforgivable plays [Applause] that's who it is stanford jennings you know here your coverage team has done an excellent job anytime you hold a professional team inside the 20 on a kickoff return you've done an outstanding job now along comes a mindless play by jennings and you tap 15 yards on and you give the offense excellent field position at the 35 yard line that that just helps you lose ball game [Applause] all ready to go first down from the 35. christopher is 9 of 17 and he's play action rolls out the set again drills it down the middle and it's incomplete he was intending for charlie locker and coverage eric thomas number 22. the one thing i see about brister is that he wants to feature that strong arm of his all the time there are times when you've got to throw the football away you look at solomon wilcox number 41 who's hobbled on the play and that time he just threw a pass that he shouldn't have thrown and if he continues to throw balls where he should he's going to get something intercepted this is a fellow the bengals could sorely afford to lose and that's uh solomon wilcox who was injured he made 13 tackles so last week against the eagles nine of those were solo right back it'll be second and ten at the steeler 35 and the [Applause] injured player will cut appears to be just not seriously injured on the draw big man jackson he has taken down from behind near the 38-yard line by reggie williams but of a more serious nature for the pittsburgh steelers is offensive guard john rainstra who has a broken leg tackler reggie williams uh is a member of the cincinnati here's reinstar on the screen right now remember the cincinnati city council is linebacker reggie williams [Music] nfl man of the year 1986 and here come the steelers third down and seven ball at the 38. [Applause] lister back into the pocket starts to run out of it he won't get out of there as the good surging defense of the bengals taking down behind the 35. that's holding the football too long you want to get rid of the football a little sooner than this part of being a quarterback and being in that pocket with everything happening so quickly is making decisions and making them fast you've got to get rid of the football if you're going to get rid of it or if you're going to take off and run do it earlier you're only going to frustrate your your receivers your offensive line unless you get rid of the football [Music] here we come with newsome's punt and waiting downfield is mike martin number 88 almost blocked bengals almost blocked it fair catch requested a mate at the 30-yard line 36-yard punt [Music] now let's go to lynn berman and nfl live thank you chuck thompson in kansas city steve deberg operating third and goal against his old team the broncos 14 yards to paul palmer kansas city takes the 17-10 lead over john elway and denver back to you chuck and reggie i'm sorry [Applause] all ready to go first from 10. and here comes brooks but he can't get out of there [Music] the big man aaron jones helped run him out number 97. has carried 14 times 62 yards mark it at the 31 second and 9 for the bengals the bengals won't wear you out rushing the football they just want to run the football effectively enough to keep the pressure off of his sizes passing and coomer is ready to put it up if he can he got it away but took a heck of a lick and the pass is caught at the 49-yard line it looked like mcgee it is mcgee number 85. tackle credit delton hall there are few who'll have a stronger arm than in siason watch this throw now this is the sideline throw that picks up maybe 15 yards but in order to complete this is science and has to throw the ball about 40 yards and that is the real measure of how strong a quarterback's arm is and that's just part of the business folks that's why he makes a million dollars a million oh he probably makes more right first linten midfield same duo back there wilson and brooke that's brown in motion first back through is brooks and he gets the ball and is inside the steeler 45 and gerald williams is predatory i don't know of a more effective little running back in all professional football time and time again james brooks takes the ball up inside he runs the ball on sweet he catches the ball over the middle he'll block what is it that he doesn't do [Music] second down and four at the 44. looks to throw left side all the way looked that way all the way and made the connection and that would be tim mcgee hardy nickerson on the coverage the bengals are really mixing up their offensive formations now they're catching the pittsburgh steelers sleeping defensively pittsburgh has been confused the last two times they have come out of the defensive huddle and science and now is being able to throw the football with with good time good timing and uh they look pretty good on this drive because simply they're keeping the steelers off of decisions [Music] brown is wide left the other way it's mcgee that's the big man wilson gets a little bit of block turns the corner and that is powered out of bounds with the 30. give greg carr some credit for the stop and that's the difference between stanley wilson and the fullback from last year larry kennebrew kennebrew would have been stopped for no yardage here wilson doesn't have anything but he picks up three yards and salvages what was a bad play and turns it into something that they can work with second down seven at the steeler 30. messiahson is 12 for 21 142 yards and mcgee now has five catches for 72 yards this will be second down and seven the lone back is wilson here's brooks in play a fake to brooks messiah's enrolling lets it go incomplete brown almost made a sensational catch delton hall was involved in the coverage but you get paid the national football league to come up with great catches let's take another look at this because i think if eddie brown had this over again he'd tell you i can make that catch see he's got that football now i'll tell you what what bothered him it was the distraction of number 35 delton hall if you have a person running in front of you and you're about to make a catch it can disrupt your concentration you better believe it when you hear the pattern of tiny feet it can break your cost third down and seven bengals at the steeler 30. they are two out of nine in third down conversions this afternoon penalty flag goes down and messian just stays there it is thrown before the play is started let's see what this is well a crucial mistake on the part of the bengals [Music] [Music] uh the clock will now be reset as we look at sam interesting story the way paul brown fired this man paul was looking through some play books because he was honoring uh hall of fame inductee mike mccormick and among the playbooks he stumbled across with sam white and he was so impressed with it he kind of packed it away in the corner of his mind and said might find a spot for him later and when the opportunity presented itself he hired white here's third and 12. blitz he dumps it off and there is mr brook penalty flag is thrown breaks clear down the sideline and then is yanked out of bounds outside the 10. [Applause] james brooks with a heck of a catch and an even better run well the flag went down there's no more versatile back in the national football league than james brooke [Applause] well it's going to be against the bengals i think it's going to be pushing off and it wasn't pushing a goal off against james brooks i think they caught mcgee [Applause] what number did he say i think he said 65 but no this was no this happened downfield i think i think they got mcgee mcgee could be well it goes back down to the 45 and then becomes third down and 22. let's take a look at it coming down to the right side of the frame it is going to be mcgee mcgee and there's still two conversions out of nine efforts and they were down to the steeler 33 they're back to the 45 version looking being rushed and he will not get out of there he is pulled down back in about the 33 yard line of the bengals by hardy nickerson 22-yard loss inspired steeler defense i don't know where they got hardy nicholson from but they ought to go back and get some more because he has played one well of a football game the steelers just constantly come up with people that play with the kind of intensity now watch here it's science and now now this is probably a mistake by a veteran quarterback who should know better you can't take that kind of loss although you know to uh to be fair they were already out of gym breaches field goal range well we're running out of time here in the third period i'm not sure that we'll get the putt off as fuller just waiting for the snap from center but see that was a very important series because the steel the bengals needed three points out of that so that it would put them out of reach of being beaten by a steal and field goal the steelers would have to score a touchdown another walk-off delay fourth down and 47 the ball back on the bengal 30-yard line one of the not-so-bright moments in the game for the men of sam white and that's it time has now run out and that's the way the third quarter is going to end with the steelers uh trailing by a point the bengals leading it by a count of ten to nine and now we're coming into the fourth period and that will definitely be the payoff period this afternoon right back well uh there's a concerned gentleman on your screen right now the coach of the bengals sam weich and we're waiting now for the punt and waiting downfield to be woodson and he's about at the steeler 30-yard line and foliage scott up ready to i think the steelers are going to go after this one well he got it out of there woodson back pedals to the steeler 23 or four looking for some kind of daylight and then never appeared and he's down at about the 37. see the smart thing to do there was for the steelers to go after that because as long as you don't rough the kicker it's only going to be five yard penalty and you no longer get a first down so with it being fourth and eternity the steelers tried to block that all they had to do was not intentionally rough the kicker so that was a good move by the steelers well they're gathered they're gathered around the 45-yard line talking about the penalty possibility see the new rule this year says that you can run into the kicker and it's five yards but you don't get an automatic first down any longer so all this is going to be is just five yards and they'll just kick it over we're running into the kitchen on the receiving team five yards foul penalty is declined for sale or you can decline or you can as they have declined the penalty right no once in the call roughing the kicker because it had been roughing the kicker it would have been 15 yards and an automatic first down and that of course would have been uh not forgivable the ball spotted out the 37-yard line of the steelers time remaining lots we've just started the fourth quarter and it's been a surprising uh ten to nine bengal lead over the steelers steelers broke on top two nothing then the bengals seven and now the ten to nine lead here are some stats where you look at bengals yards rushing 96 to 82 passing 142 129 total yards 238 211 and the time session rather than close 24-21 i think what the stats say is we have a very evenly matched football game here that might not be so close that have not been for four steeler turnovers in the first half yes okay here comes the steelers [Music] lips is going to move out to the left side of their offensive set stone and the jackson going in motion pitch to jackson going in there got out for the 40. well let's go now to uh len berman and in nfl live lem berman please all right chuck here i am jim kelly his first touchdown pass of 1988 only took him three games this is late fourth quarter they're moving along in new england buffalo is 2-0 but they still trail it 14-13 late in the fourth let's go back to you chuck all right thank you lynn second and seven at the 40. play action fake crystal look out and they set the screen and that's white stone this could be a big gainer 40 [Music] 20 he fumbled out of bounds they say at the 19. here is what the steelers had today that they didn't have a few years ago quick strike ability watch dwight stone number 20 with that great speed number 63 is darmani dawson the rookie just into the ball game you gotta hold on to that football dwight baby or it'll nullify a big gainer like that at the bengal 22 first down steelers jackson and stone still there almost the every play of the game merrell hodge in there once in a while bristol with a little time let's go incomplete threw it behind this intended receiver [Music] played by david fulcher once again gothic was there but brister couldn't set himself and release the ball properly because fulcher was making the tackle at the same time bristol wanted to throw the football i'm very impressed by the playoff david fulcher well he had a great game last week he's a three-year veteran out of arizona state he was a third round pick in 86 and he's had back-to-back outstanding games 12 tackles against the eagles and two of those were solos second down ten steelers at the bengal 22 i think lewis smith is the man to look for here appears to have one-on-one coverage and it's stone and dwight is down to the 15 on a quick hitter that's not such a bad play because brister obviously recognized the defense and called a draw play perfect call on the situation and ray horton number 20 made the touchdown saving tackle now we have a couple of fresh backs in there for the steelers number 33 merrell hodge and rodney carter number 24 it'll be third down in about three troy johnson number 85 is also on field i still say this is where you look for lewis lips in a situation like this i wouldn't think plays i think players and the player i'd want to get the football to is lit blister running for his life can he get around the corner fakes the throw on the goal five and out of bounds early this afternoon our partner reggie rucker pointed out the importance of speed and here's a classic example of what a quarterback can do if he has agility and speed well there's no support on the outside because the steelers had two receivers over here and they both ran off at both cornerbacks and of course brister with that speed and with that brashness that he has brought to the steelers offense picks up the first down they've got a double tight end setting there now gothic and unit are in i would imagine that ernest jackson is in there too they'll probably go right behind webster that's dwight stone and he didn't get there he's got to be careful i'll tell you he is not carrying that football securely jim style number 78 was able to impede his progress somewhat they spotted at the four normally you want to give the football to ernest jackson down here but i'm not so sure if jackson is as confident and we have an ineligible receiver wait germany dawson must report so that the defensive captain knows that he is eligible to catch a pass he is on the left hand of the steeler line second down [Applause] could not get there at the one yard line just about to say one block and he has gun at me barney bussey number 27 the cincinnati bengals and on opening day won a football game because their defense rose to the occasion in a situation just like this against the phoenix cardinals two times the cardinals were in bengal territory once at the end of the game with a chance to win and the steelers excuse me and the bengals defense repelled them okay the lead back 43 jackson the trailing back is 20 stone that's dawson in motion blister roll he got him defense into the end zone incomplete great receiver was mike hennett great defense by the bengals once again they have a superb goal line defense they have covered the perimeter they stopped the run inside and when bristol that time rolled looking for room to run they cut him off and of course there was nowhere to run because when you roll out chuck you limit the area in which you can throw the football great defense by the bengals you would expect you know an offensive fireworks from the steelers and the bengals and it's been much more of a defensive struggle well this is one of those games where you do whatever you can to win 19-yard field girl in the air looks pretty good and the officials agree so the steelers have moved out in front now to make it a count of 12 to 12 to 10. and it's been one of those seesaw battles the lead has changed hands a few times but you see it right now pittsburgh 12 cincinnati 10. all ready to go as we take a peek at brister down there on the steeler bench watching his teammate ready to kick off stanford jennings is the middle man in the trio of return men he's got woods to his right side and hillary to his left side he's got a good high and deep and that's stanford jennings at the goal line up the middle and he got it out short of the to the 25-yard line not the 24 good return 20 24 yard return and the bengals have the ball [Applause] at their own 24 yard line the bengals have been able to move the football between the 20-yard lines but when they've gotten down around the 20-yard line they've sort of self-destructed penalties bad plays and so forth their job is to get the ball down there and come out with some points brooks and wilson are back there that's trump brooks coming out of there boomer out the throw out in the flat he's got his man and that's tight end rodney holmen who has taken down crossing the 30-yard line rod woodson hard to believe woodson's only been in the league two years and he is uh he is a remarkable athlete he has so much athletic gift to play on chuck i mean he really doesn't know the system and know the players around the league as well as he will in a couple of years but he just has extraordinary talent second down about three and he will just get better and better with every passing year from the 31. wilson power run up to the 35 and first down yardage for the bengals tackle credit how about greg carr number 91 every drive of the bengals has uh had the same sort of character to it the bengals gets the ball and they and they move it well and then the steelers defense comes up with a big play almost uh invariably they have amazing resiliency once the bengals have come down into scoring territory scoring territories when you get down around the 30-yard line the steelers have been making some big plays first down at the 35. that's brooks away from us besides him looking left all the way blocked number 54 leaping up is hardy nickerson he's had himself a pretty good ball game that's what i mean by big plays that doesn't you don't see a lot there because you see hardy nickerson blocking the ball but it was a receiver running free and science was trying to get the ball to him but big play by the defense once again [Music] mcgee wide to the right the other way at the brown size from looking door miami steelers using another one of those new look defenses with aaron jones standing up as the linebacker he ought to be coming good protection good lead pass caught by brown the race is on touchdown bengals and there is not a penalty marker in sight 65 yards eddie brown leads the national football league coming into this game and yardage receiving he had 225 yards in two games bottom of your screen good arm over move to escape from the bump and run delton hall who has been picked on by every opposing quarterback just can't catch eddie brown neither can the sprinter rod woodson who's coming from the far side if you get behind a defensive back i don't care how fast that defensive back is he's going to have trouble catching any wide receiver in this league here's the point after that's okay there are no penalty flags down the big play offense quick strike ability eddie brown here it is again good pick up good pass protection for assassin assassin lays the ball out there beautifully and now it's off to the races for eddie brown 65 yards touchdown the bengals go back up on top 17-12 and we'll be right back well that's the story and here's the story on the scoring drive four plays 76 yards and elapsed time 147 65 yard perfectly thrown pass to eddie brown and what a great job he did getting behind the defense [Music] which is [Applause] [Music] [Applause] i want to show you where all of the work was done by eddie brown on this touchdown right at the line of scrimmage this is bump and run coverage the key here is getting away from the defensive back now watch the receiver fake inside now see now immediately he puts the defensive back behind him it's all over now the rest of it is academic [Music] 17-12 the bengals over the steelers and the steelers at their own 31. crisper looking to throw sideline by stone and out of bounds goes white right at the 40-yard line that makes him a yard shy of first down yardage i can't remember the steelers having an athlete in the backfield like dwight stone a man with that kind of speed can get outside for them who can run the football on kick runs who's a threat coming out of the backfield on passes i'll tell you when he learns this game and learns pattern running he's going to be something to see because he's going to be unstoppable out of the backfield number 20. steelers have a lot of options here second one at their own 40. [Applause] for first down yardage give the krumrai tackle credit he had a little help but he plugged up that middle very well the steelers have switched their thinking and their offense now they had been running on first down and trying to pick up the artist with the past on second down previously now they've gone to passing on first down looking to hit their backs out of the backfield and going from there but let's see if they don't go back to the pass again on first down jackson gets a rest 33 hodges back in there with white stone first down at the steeler 42. [Applause] motion to pitch the stone and he tried to cut it back but it just didn't develop as well as he wanted it to he's out to about the 45 stone incidentally has made three catches for 70 yards and he's carried the ball 12 times for 43. and it appears to me they're trying to get football to stone in as many ways as they can although i would not rule out louis lips in my game plan i know the bengals are aware of that they're probably sending coverage towards lips but you're going to make a big play this man has made them many many times for the pittsburgh steelers and he is healthier again in 1988 and i know chuck knows very happy to have this guy back second down six at the 46. squeezy thompson in motion roll by brister look out from behind he's got it away and it's caught inside the 40. wonderful sliding catch by tight end preston gothard and he took a shot brister really took a shot after he released the football watch it here releases the football you can't see it here but preston gothic gets down and shares that guess now you're going to see jason buck number 99 leveling brister who probably never saw the end result of that play it's a hard way to make a living huh i would say so there's jason buck and brigham young second year first down from 1987. the cincinnati bengals and mrs stone weaves his way inside the 35 before you stop calzander carl zander excuse me look at number 91 was there and there's a big scramble and the bengals say they come up with a football [Applause] count it five turnovers that's it by the pittsburgh steelers and the bengals have the ball at their own 35 five turnovers [Applause] and the bengals with a 17-12 lead and seven minutes remaining on the clock and they've got the football this entire pittsburgh backfield is going to get a reputation of being a fumble prone backfield because they have put four footballs on the ground today and it is extremely difficult to overcome turnovers of that magnitude now watch it here number 91 carl zander with the stripping tackle you get the expected reaction from this crowd [Music] chuck noll is not going to be a very pleasant coach to deal with this week five turnovers that's brown in motion and they give to that stanley wilson and wilson is out over the 35 to about the 37. jones comes in for tackle credit this is stone on the bench and he is concerned a very dejected white stone he knows that that could cost you a ball game it's meryl hodge talking with him [Music] he's going to be a fine player he really is second down at eight at the 37. the steelers have taken delton hall out of the ball game and greg leah rookie over this is brooks wide sweep eats up some of the clock got a couple of yards a fumble or was it no apparently he got out of bounds steelers felt they had the ball [Applause] well it will be prime time olympic coverage tonight uh live women's basketball greg laganas and the three meter springboard efforts the men's 200-meter freestyle the united states versus the netherlands in men's volleyball tonight on nbc gained a three third and five now for the vendors yes he was shaken up was brooks left side of your screen number 21 james brooks number 50 is david little head on collision right there and brook had his helmet down and when those helmets collide you fade to black i've heard people say it makes a terrible sound to say the least but i mentioned this during the last play chuck the steelers took delton hall out of the ball game they have replaced him with number 21 greg lee a rookie and i should think that messiahs might try this young man 6 19 left in the ball game they're coming at him dumped it off well thrown and out of bounds goes stanford jennings who has just replaced uh brooks just a tough play to defend when you've got a left-hander like assassin who rolls well and throws on the run they've got the wide receiver to this side clearing out the corner and then the running back comes comes underneath tough play to cover [Music] looks as though james brooks is up and around and none the worse for where and [Applause] jennings stays in there on this play wilson it might be a blitz i got to tell you i've got to look at lee that's wilson is down at the 44 45 yard line of the bengals looked like reese number 64. and down on the bottom of the pile number 75 of the bengals leading the way well let's take a look at some of the scores 31 to 3 of the jets it's 1710 kansas city and 16 to 14 the bills over the that's a final 16 14 the bills over the paper three and oh buffalo and miami 24-17 in the fourth seventeen to ten the skins over the eagles in the fourth 31-7 over the bears the vikings in the fourth 22-14 new orleans over the bengal or rather the lions and phoenix and tampa bay this is the time remaining in the game 4 51. [Applause] they're fighting for that football on every play and [Applause] wilson the ball carrier little the linebacker made the tackle it's going to be around call it the 45-yard line third down you certainly can't fault the play of the pittsburgh defense today they have been much maligned in the first two ball games but they have held this high-powered offense of the cincinnati bengals to 17 points and if you hold professional offenses to 17 points you should win the problem has been with the steelers offense they can't get anything going boomer wants to throw off play action going for broke down the far sideline it is going to be incomplete boy what a great job of coverage on the intended receiver mcgee and rod woodson was right there outstanding coverage this fella is playing well very very quickly he's a quick learner he has all of the physical attributes to play the corner and in still a tradition he's six foot one 205 pounds not only is he's one of if he's he's one of the fastest men in the league of course losing the nfl's fastest man competition to daryl green of the washington redskins 406 remaining bengals 17-12 over the steelers and the steelers will get the football and downfield waiting for it is rod woodson at about the 10-yard line they came after him and didn't quite get the punt here's woodson at about the 18-20 slips down and is held at about the 25. so the steelers have the football ed brady on the coverage the stadium clock shows us three minutes and 58 seconds remaining and the bengals lead 17 to 12 but the steelers have the ball here we go at the 25-yard line 3 58 remaining 17-12 the bengal and christopher [Music] you want to get the football now to your best players and your fastest players the players that can win the game for you louis lipp says that man watch him on the right side here they're giving plenty of room here he runs this pattern now watch him come back to the sideline good drift drift makes the catch gets out of bounds stops the clock good play first down steel at their 39. [Applause] drills it again and it's a catch at the 45-yard line kelly on the tackle and dwight stone on the reception there's the mark of a very determined professional makes the fumble on the last series the stealers know that the worst thing you want to do is to have him worry about it and think about it they wanted to get the ball for him again get it to him on something that he can make a catch and make a big play you never know this fella could win the game for you he has that kind of speed second down four at the 45. he's going to put it up again and russell [Applause] can't take the saturn that's reggie williams number 57 who came in to down brister at the steeler 34. you just cannot take a sack in this situation a little bit of inexperience here get rid of the football come back and dance another day he holds on to the football too long and there's that man number 69 tim primroy everywhere and it's the fifth sack of the afternoon back at the 34-yard line it's a must-improved cincinnati bengals defense this is a football team that the afc central division is going to have to record with this year third on the left 15. [Applause] the blitz is on again and bristol gets away from one gets away from two now fires oh he's sitting throwing that nope was double team number 24 was all over in lewis phillips and ray horton number 20. time 2 minutes and 40 seconds bobby brister is coming up with some breathtaking heart stopping who did he like escapes out of that backfield that's an ill-advised throw i mean he just put that one up for anybody i i probably i mean i commend him on the elusiveness but you just can't throw it away [Applause] it was a timeout by cincinnati and it shows two on the board time's remaining we'll take another look at baseball for you here's some scores the red sox to four of the yankees that's in the eighth inning at fenway and uh the tigers and the orioles are scoreless in the second inning in tiger stadium here's a young man who is uh suffering growing pain somewhat this afternoon there are he has the ability he certainly is willing and just once in a while you had my question as judge yeah and you expect that from a young player i mean he hasn't been in the situation before so he's just playing instinctively all right let's watch the punt [Music] good looking puck a fair catch is requested and made at the bengal 20-yard line [Music] it'll be bengal ball now 46-yard punt and the ball is going to be spotted at the bengal 20-yard line one thing that boomer is siason will be telling his offensive team is that we don't need any penalties and we need to secure the football they're going to run what they call their safe offense they're going to give the ball to people that they know they can trust they won't do anything fancy right now because the steelers can't beat them with a field goal it takes a touchdown brooks and wilson this is wilson in his own backfield and that's larry griffin number 22. mary griffin a member of the steelers special team was voted the outstanding player on special teams a week ago against the washington redskins now watch it number 22 come out of the left of your screen takes down stanley wilson for about a five yard loss it's not a good way to start for the cincinnati bengals larry griffin is now hurting steelers are getting very thin in the defensive secondary now the bengals with the football and they are spotting it at about the 14-yard line and we're down to two minutes and 24 seconds well the big the big question here uh facing tony dungy the defensive coordinator of the steelers is there's tony uh with the headset sitting down is what do you think the cincinnati bengals are going to do you put yourself in the coordinated shoes and you say well will they attempt to pass it it was down here remember that the bengals got a safety called against them earlier so i would think that i'm going to run the football if i would have been there and they do just that and a determined runner gets up to james brooks and he's taken down by david little and hardy nickerson a little second effort on brooks's part got a couple of yards stillers took their first time out well that's their second timeout they have one left [Music] well prime time olympic coverage tonight live women's basketball and then greg laganas on the 3 meter meter springboard the men's 200 meter freestyle and the united states versus the netherlands in men's volleyball tonight on nbc [Music] so all is not lost for the pittsburgh steelers they have an opportunity here and i can tell you what they're thinking god full haze has been a three-step punter and he's been a guy that has taken some time to get the ball off i think what the steelers want to do is put themselves in a situation where they can rush that punter on fourth down well here come the bengals with a third and 11 from about their 19. that's brooks tries to bounce around the corner and he tried to turn it up got near the 25-yard line before loopy sanchez rolled him up fox shows 209 and he did the one thing that he shouldn't have done is he ran outside and he ran out of bounds uh that's that only benefited the pittsburgh steelers he should have stayed in bounds there and forced now this way the steelers get a free timeout and they're going to get another one at the two-minute warning but i'll bet you right now scott fulhage is going to be a man under siege because the steelers are going to be coming they're all up there and that's the man of the hour for the bengals the last thing you want to do is lose a football game with a block punt here they come he got it out there good execution what a great kick woodson at the 23 of the steelers laterally along the 25. cut up field 30 35 40 40. up to the 48-yard line what a whale of a run by woodson here's the man who's given the steelers a heck of an opportunity and that's the story cincinnati 17 the steelers 12. well reggie there's a report card for you to look at the bengals well those are the people that usually get it done for the bengals and assassins pretty good day against a pretty good defensive effort by the steelers today the guy you don't see on there of course is eddie brown who made that spectacular 65-yard touchdown catch and here we go with bubby brister who well he isn't really hitting the kind of completions i think the steelers want but stone a good day and of course lips and lips is the man right now that i think you have to focus in on because he's the guy that has a kind of experience in the background at winning football games and a man who's very capable of pulling this one out for the steelers well we talked a little bit about tradition of the steelers and it's you can feel it every time you come into this great old stadium in pittsburgh charlie lockett is in there along with ouija thompson and also louis lips they're the wide outs lockett is up there at the top of the stream rodney carter is a running back here is mr rooney this caricature still looking down on steeler football that's carter moving in and out brister back to throw down the middle he's got his name that looks like luigi thompson that's who it is first down steelers at the bengal 30. they've got three wide receivers in the ball game they're spreading the bait off the field and they're hitting the scenes that's what they want to look for they want to look down the middle of the field that goes christopher blocked and almost picked off if you're the bengals i don't think you can sit back and try to play safely i think you have to attack the steelers i think you have to play very aggressively the bengals has gotten to 2-0 because they have played aggressively on defense and it's no time to stop right now they've got to come at the steelers because the steelers are going to be throwing the football on every down they've got one timeout remaining saw paul brown looking down with the binoculars and you can see how nervous and edgy he is and he has every right to be here come the steelers second down 10 at the bengal 30. [Applause] squeezing motion cuts downfield bristol back to throw now down to the 21-yard line of the bengals time time is requested by that fella number six bubby brister and the store story on the scoreboard bengals 17 steelers 12. the bengal 21-yard line a minute and 17 left and the bengals leading here's where brister has to come of age because you've got a minute and 17 seconds that's playing time to score a touchdown you have to convince those guys in the huddle with you that you have things under control and you have to get the first down third down in the yard [Applause] that's a good play now he has to get that team together very quickly on the quarterback keeper and a quick snap first down now at the 20. throws the ball into the turf just to stop the clock a minute and three as you see the thing that brister has to remember right now is that he cannot take a sack if he sees a sack that is imminent he must throw the football away he cannot take a set and he has to try to get the football to i think louie lips i really believe that [Music] ouija thompson coming out and troy johnson has gone in we'd like to thank our spotters tim fogerty and mike mcginley and staff george jordan and john rooney thank you very much without that help you don't get the job done [Applause] second down ten rockets motion breakdown right into the hands of a defender and down goes number 22 eric thomas and that just about tells the story on the steeler hopes this afternoon and that's what the pittsburgh steelers are going to have to live with the maturing of bubby brister and i think for the cincinnati bengals this is signaling maybe a new era in this football team because they now are winning football games that they used to lose this defense has become very opportunistic as we take a look at this play here by brister briston forces this football where he shouldn't throw it there's no way he should throw that football and i'll tell you if you're taking if you want to look at who the most valuable player is in this football game i would say the i would say billy brooks i like that i think mr brooks yeah he did a heck of a lot well and we think it's time now to name the most valuable player award sponsored by budweiser and the mvp is going to be the cincinnati bengals james brooks bud sizer will make a contribution to the united way on behalf of all of the mvp selected in games there's james brooks number 21. i think he was just such an integral factor in the entire offensive scheme of things he caught the ball he ran inside he ran outside he did the things that you have to do as a halfback in the kind of offense that the cincinnati bengals had he's a very versatile player well the bengals off to a heck of a start when you look back at what happened to the bengals a year ago four wins and 11 losses six times they lost it in the last minute minute and a half and then to get off the way they are this year uh 3-0 it's a it's just a very satisfying feeling i know for sam watching for paul brown
