in the peace and serenity of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia there lies a starling beast one would never think of such a pastoral setting could be near a monster it was created in 1947 a 1/2 mile dirt racetrack the surroundings have changed little and although paved in 1955 the track has remained a tough one it's located near Martinsville and is NASCAR's oldest continually operated track since 1947 drivers and cars have come here to challenge it many words have been used to describe Martinsville but there's a lot of beast in the beauty richard was one of those involved in a typical Martinsville multi Clark tangle in 1985 his car suffered extensive damage but Burt Moore was Bill Elliott his quest for the title that year was hurt greatly by the crash [Music] [Music] since it was paid in 1955 driving style to change little it's still a rough-and-tumble racetrack hard on equipment and on drivers Ricky would found out how things can get out of control and how solid the concrete walls at Martinsville can be [Music] [Music] three Matadors fought in this bullring last year to try to slay the Beast in the final lap Terry Labonte and Dale Earnhardt locked horns with Darrell Waltrip slipping under the cape to win his only race of 1987 to win Martinsville is quite an accomplishment it takes skill patience and endurance the call has come out for the drivers to return to Martinsville for the 33rd annual goodies 500 [Applause] ESPN the world's leader in motor sports coverage presents speed world today from Martinsville Virginia the cadiz 500 being brought to you by budweiser proud sponsor of the 1988 US olympic team this Bud's for you my Quaker State motor oil the bay Q stands for quality always has always will buy cheap there's a feeling you can get only in a Jeep and by Purolator the first payment filters for pure oil now and pure oil later it's Purolator the very overcast day here in Martinsville Virginia the temperature a very cool 62 degrees and there are showers in the area good afternoon everybody I'm Bob Jenkins welcome to Martinsville we return here for the first time since 1981 500 laps of competition this afternoon on a 1/2 mile race track and net it's one of the most strangely configured racetracks I've ever seen it's like driving on two dried strips each straightaway is long and narrow and then you go through very tight turns and Bobby it is absolutely one of the toughest tracks on the circuit to pass on you literally have to fit someone up and sometimes have to bump them a little bit to get them out of the way and if there's ever been into doubt about this being a contact sport we'll see when the green flag falls here later there are six more races to go in the 1988 Winston Cup Series and the points battle remains the closest in history it could go down to the very last race Ned has 127 for B coming into this race today regardless of where he finishes or where Dale Earnhardt finishes he will still go away with the point lead but this racetrack can be a point buster as we saw in 1985 when he came in here with an 86 point lead over Darrell Waltrip he was taken out by this crash and went away but the 22 the bill seems to be living a charmed life 1988 last week at Dover Delaware while leading the race we came across the start/finish line to get the caution and the right rear tire blew on the car but he was able to get it back to the pit and with some good fast pit work was able to get back out and maintain the lead and the force went on to victory Haley a short track program is wet stronger this year he's sitting on the front row more on that story here's dr. Jerry punch well you know Ned the last two of the three events have been run in Winston Cup competition that's wave principles the Winston Cup point battle I'm talking about Elliott Earnhardt and Wallace have finished one two three today on the footboard Martinsville two of those principles sit here a brand new track record and a brand new race car you know what happened the other short track car they had at Bristol but a brand new Kodiak Pontiac for Rusty Wallace why is he on the pole well let's just this man is the guy that put him there how can Billy Elliott put Rusty Wallace on the pole well Elliott had this track rented a week or so ago to practice Rusty Wallace had a brand new car and had him practicing he said Bill can I come up there and run some lap built this sure no problem come on up rusty came up practice it and he put bill off the color on the outside of the front row how critically was today's race well since 1980 the driver who has had the best average finish with a short track has become the Winston Cup champion who is it among these three it's not rusty it's not bill it's the guy starting way back in 10th spot Dale Earnhardt watch out the championship battle continue let's go up pit road to Larry Hoover Larry my location gives you the essence of Martinsville the pageantry always a big tradition here the landscaping very few ovals in America have landscaping encircling the outer walls also as you look across the infield the linear distance between the front stretch in the back stretch is quite small now what that tells you is that their turns are very short here it's a real added emphasis on exit speed rather than in turn speed almost like a road course these cement patches here they're actually encircling the entire turns now lends to the durability the racetrack here but also when it gets slippery again very I see and how about these curves now the curve keep the cars off the grass another one of the traditions at Martinsville but it also prevents the drivers from kicking dirt up onto the racing surface these curbs also however provide a very unique set of problems Gary well you're right Larry those curves have knocked more front ends out of alignment than any pothole on any city street also the concrete you talked about is segmented by little strips of car this car upsets the handling of the car it's like going over a lot of little ripples little bumps just when you need the traction the most in the turns then the transition to the asphalt upsets the car again this has caused more and more headaches for the crew chiefs and the drivers trying to get their cars to handle for 500 laps here Bob and the driver who can best negotiate those corners 1,000 times in the next three and a half hours will emerge as the winner of the goodies 500 the order has been given to start engines in a moment we'll be back for the lineup and the start of the goodies 500 from Martinsville Speedway in Virginia ESPN Speed World in the goodies 500 here is the starting lineup for today's race with a new track record on pole position driving car number 27 the Kodiak Pontiac Rusty Wallace from st. Louis outside of row number one it's Bill Elliott from Dawsonville Georgia in the number nine Coors motor craft for the second row Geoff Bodine from Shaboom New York to number five Levi Garrett Chevrolet and Neil bun into the Valvoline Pontiac car 75 the third row it's Terry Labonte from Corpus Christi Texas the Budweiser Chevrolet number 11 and Alan Kulwicki the Xerox Ford car number seven Michael Waltrip starts at 7th position in the country time lemonade Pontiac number 30 and then Brad Teague in the number 67 panel sweatshirts for September oh it's Greg sacks and number 88 the Red Baron frozen pizza Oldsmobile and Dale Earnhardt in the GM Goodwrench Chevrolet car number three row six late speed car 83 the wins Oldsmobile then Mark Martin in this dro Lite Ford car number six the seventh row has Brett Bodine in the Crisco Ford car number 15 and the Quaker State Buick number 26 driven by Ricky Rudd the eighth row its Rick Wilson in the Kodak holes will be a Pontiac brothers kodak doubles wheel car for and Harry Gant on Hoosier tires in the skull bandit Chevrolet car 33 Benny Parsons in car number 90 and Sterling Marlin and 44 will start and we take a look at the rest of the starting lineup there are three drivers that start this race on Hoosier tires besides Harry Gant Ken Schrader will also go with the Hoosiers and Bobby Dylan jr. the 32 starters in this field today as we watch the rest of the starting lineup here 20 of these drivers have won at least one Winston Cup race in the past so you might say that it's a race of women and Harry Gant was the winner on this track yesterday when we ran a push Grand National race that we'll have for you this coming Friday afternoon here on ESPN arrogant what the Busch Grand National race long this racetrack just yesterday there is the number six car and the 83 and the number three car of Dale Earnhardt II starting back in 10th position didn't have a particularly good qualifying effort but he's set to go for 500 laps of competition the pace car pulls off here comes the field out of corner number Boren [Music] jumping to an early lead boy he got a good start on thee when the flag dropped he jumped out ahead of a lilies he wanted to be sure to get into turn one first Darrell Waltrip runnin the high groove through the first and second quarters as he tries to pick up positions here comes the field once again off of corner number four Wallace will lead lap number one [Music] all 32 drivers have survived lap number 1 in fact they survived the first concern number 2 the feels begins to get strung out just a little bit and Baldwin Rusty Wallace play as that first [Music] have been one of his strong suits in the past for he was determined to take the lead man he was ready when they've got ready to throw the dream flag he's really suckered Bill Elliott got a big jump he was determined to leave that first lap but you can see how close Bill Elliott is now that we have runs of three laps of this race back in third and fourth positions the number five cars driven by Jeff Bodine and the number 11 of Terry Labonte following Terry and Oh Jeff five straight the wall look like coming out of two he got on a gas a little hard to back in came around he hit the wall coming off the back that's that concern onto the backstretch and Dale Earnhardt is struggling to pass cars and make his way through the field and look at this sixth car bart part has gotten caught on the outside and boy that is a tough situation see there's so much traffic down there he can't get back on the low roof and especially in the early part of the race you've got a run on the inside of the racetrack here lakes be trying to make a move on Dale Earnhardt on the outside and this is for tenth position as Lake speed is on the high side and Dale Earnhardt on the low side 10:11 it comes Ricky run to the green 26 Mark Martin on the outside of the dark blue numbers let's look at the contact that's going on right there as Darrell Waltrip had to get off the brakes and he was nailed at the problem 24 1 & 2 Davey Allison has spun out between turns 1 & 2 and we're going to have the first caution of the afternoon and it comes on lap number 6 Davey Allison losing control and spending down in quarter number one and two Phil Parsons we also noticed got at least into the grass down in that area but he's a continuing to run he has some front-end damage on that car here comes Davey around he doesn't appear to have had much major damage at least to the car there's none visible at least but he catches up to the rest of the field on lap number seven but there is some smoke coming from the Phil Parsons car whether it's a power rubbing or watch that's snow the front of baby L in 1971 there was only one caution flag during this race the record number of cautions in 1987 seventeen [Music] the Green has just come out Rusty Wallace continues to lead Bill Elliott Jeff bodean Terry Labonte Alan Kulwicki Michael and breaks accent our number 88 or that is bumper-to-bumper racing right there look at that line there's no room nobody's given anybody a break they're all trying to make up some more positions early receive they learn hard there we have word that maybe need some running on only seven cylinders pretty ready to wreck I move around let's go to Jerry punch in the head [Music] and he's no fat the board [Music] mystic he qualified and dip spotted is making his way to the front and we're going to bring him in during that first caution flag but doesn't let me see if it'll clear up a little bit it is not a get cleared up and they are conferred here [Music] go into the corners okay but on the straightaway thank you get one or two car lengths on him so he's losing positions on the racetrack he's back to 12 he was tenth just a few laps ago so they learn hard definitely not happy with the way that GM Goodwrench Chevrolet is running you see there that Lake speed at carnivore 83 past past there Sterling Marlin at carnival 44 that looks alongside Dale Earnhardt and Floyd [Music] koishi once warned position as he battles with terry labonte Kulwicki in the number seven total body the number eleven Junior Johnson repaired Chevrolet those first five cards have pulled away [Music] but everybody primed take that low groove but that's always the case here at mark you have to run low if you're going to get rid of this race track fail so you know there's no apron at this track all the other tracks have a little bit of an apron down low on a you know maybe not Bank as much but at least an apron here that curve is just you got to run right against the curve almost to really get around here fast you can see grab deep Bill Elliott Geoff Bodine there Lavanya now in quick all runners almost behind curve and they go to the third be very careful up here is not to use too much break during the break technology has improved [Music] except in turn three Dale Garrett and the number 57 of Morgan Shepherd came together with extensive damage to the Dale Jarrett bar he took a pretty good shot from Morgan Shepherd against the outside wall with a male moving around inside the clock that's good news but that power is very badly damaged out of water and oil running out of the motor of Notre Dame out above me into going into the turn one of these stars last weekend at Dover Dale Jarrett was just an excellent run before he was eliminated from competition and now his race appears to be over in the third turn now perhaps Dale Earnhardt will choose this time to come in and see if they can get that problem corrected because it appears as if we're going to be yellow here for quite a while there is liquid running down the racetrack from Dale Jarrett's car and so the track crews are going to be on the surface we would guess for several laps can see how Dale Earnhardt's is waiting for him there are pets on both the front stretch and the back stretch here and Dale is petted on the here he comes into the pit area Jerry punch will explain what's happening Jerry well Dale Earnhardt my friends are good they just told me a minute ago that the car was missing as they came off the corner but about the middle of the straightaway the car would begin to clear up and that sounds like a carburetor problem and the Richard killers had accrued out looking underneath the hood they thought maybe the carburetor maybe loading up with fuel and not steering out as well would call it a sputter a little bit coming off the corner they had the hood up they are trying to decide what the problem is of course in a short track you have a little less time I do have on a Super Speedway under coffee so they have one man watching for the pace car they put the car back down there's no field inside if we can find out what what exactly the problem is well I didn't see him do anything it looked like that was more of a diagnostic technique they really didn't do anything yet I think they're trying to figure out what the problem is well there's good news Dale Jarrett is out of the race car and walking across the track to the infield he doesn't appear to be injured in any way but he certainly did take a shot he's wearing a leg brace there on the on the right side and we have the tail end of the crashing what happened well of course he had all rates fun into the wall of Oregon Sheppard had gotten into him I agree with Jerry I believe that he might've blown that turn orchid was about a turkey and Marley's behind him before they went into that turn and they learn large is coming in to the pits for a second time Jerry well we were talking about it they looked into the hood and that Gary fitt they were trying to diagnose the problem and get the profit undiagnosed they cannot determine what's causing it the Skip but they're going to change to alternate ignition here they're going to take the breather off and change from one ignition amplifier to another they already have them mounted inside the hood they've switched it over besides the motor they put the motor back down yeah he will fire it up here is they're trying to get the car fired and they're gonna have to push the car to get it started and boy there comes a pace car they have better get it cranked they're going to lose a lap it is not yet fired now it fires and he beats the safety car with a crowd of roaring he returns what Earnhardt stays on the lead lamp let's go to Larry nuber Jerry there's a real head scratching going on in the pits right now you know it's early in the race so many times in the Winston Cup race you'll see people will they want to pit to make sure they got the right setup but as the booth has already mentioned it's so hard the pass so we better not pit we can't give up the track time that we may have a tire problem ensuing here this day so we want to make some changes or switch our tires let's go ahead and pit well but the weather might be moving in we maybe we shouldn't piss because we give up the track time in a race where he lose out as he pits again is the only guy kidding and that's reason why nobody else is coming in Jerry well Dale Earnhardt back on pit road again and whatever they switched it and did through the trick because Earnhardt's car still sputtering and missing and they are going to try to be something different here they go Maori Party bar sparkling bye and again by the skin of his peace relief garlic's a defending Winston Cup champion goes back out the we are here at Martinsville under caution for the second time today they lured our heads in trouble as Rusty Wallace we stay tuned [Music] we're back at Marksville and there's of real work going on to the Dale Earnhardt pet he comes in every single lap that we're running under caution and just barely beats the pace car out each and every time he has not gone down a lap but there is still a lot more work to do on that car before they get the problem corrected here he comes in once again for another stuff that's Phil Parsons coming in right ahead of him and Phil has been in for a total of 13 laughs so he's 13 laps down the field Earnhardt back in again they've been told that the next time around they'll be getting the green flag I believe so this Richard Childress red crew is not a real work on their hands to get them out you know they're putting the air cleaner on right there they took it off for a lap I think they took its back behind the pits to look at it I really don't know if they're sure whether it's an electrical problem or the corporation problem it seems like it's pretty hard to diagnose they're only getting about 30 seconds each time they stopped before the pace car comes around it try and stay in the lead lap and they've been pretty successful so far you can see the pace car stayed out for but at past earnest yellow lights on top out and so they will be going green next time Earnhardt will stay on the track this time so they're going to try it any better people go back to green on land number 24 with Rusty Wallace leading bill Elliot is running second Geoff Bodine is third Terry Labonte fourth and fifth is a little wacky Midtown Steele fondant Greg sacks Ricky Rudd Michael Waltrip Darrell Waltrip Brad Sieg Lake speed Sterling Marlin mark mark Brett Bodine and Rick Wilson and once again is a very slow start [Music] the green flag while it's just just enough to the jump racecar Tony doesn't have big rod on his back bumper when it goes into that first turn you know with this mini car still right on the racetrack they got the start/finish line to take the green flag Rusty Wallace with the halfway down the back straightaway these cars are in to end halfway around the racetrack right now now a bit of a gamble and an open topic we [Music] it's pretty much now a single file formation around the half mile racetrack perk shell Murphy the crew chief on the Dale Earnhardt car and Jerry's women the true standing here watching Earnhardt we'll talk to Kirk and find out [Music] to work on the car do you have any idea [Music] they changed ignitions and they've looked at the carburetor they took the breather off and checked that but the car is still sputtering in fact it's getting a little bit worse now so they are definitely concerned be extremely frustrating for a crew chief and not be able to figure out exactly what the problem so I've been in that situation so many times I almost feel sorry for Kirk because there are so many normal things like he was talking about that you change they've switched to their backup ignition system the problem they took the air cleaner off they looked at the carburetor apparently they think that's okay it is frustrated trying to find a problem usually when you do find it itself small little thing and it must be equally as frustrating for a driver that especially one who is in the battle for the Winston Cup champion whatever it is this is a is one of the most FRA comp that you can have all during the year [Music] anyone here sparks will always run so well his cars dancing well he knows that he running cars and he was not [Music] straight away now one fella who is not losing his speed is Darrell Waltrip he started in 20th position he in front of cars in the orange - he is really getting around this price range [Music] last year of this race of the traumatic finish that we showed you on our elopement [Music] they raise the 1980s his brother Michael Waltrip is running about 30 car lengths behind you [Music] when a Pontiac Bothell employee left back quite a bit of damage to the right rear of his car but we don't see any smoke coming from come on Farah for there he jumps into the picture of the yellow car although this is certainly an endurance contest laughs you gotta think as Larry Hoover crews are thinking this will be a shorter range because we have had rain to the area and rain last night it was raining this morning a very heavy atmosphere was due and mist in the air and you got to be woman that shortly entire my well you're right this crew chief said they've got to keep one eye on the skies all day trying to decide well you know the race really isn't official they get over the halfway point so most of the teams have always paid themselves well let's just take care of the brakes take care of the engine because it's such a problem here engine running good all the way through the race now there's they got to be thinking well after the halfway point this thing could end any time we need to be in a position to win Alan Kulwicki trying to take away that Ward spot again from terry labonte so we got that those of the car inside the blue bunny in turn number three but not could not successfully pull off the pass just a demonstration of how indeed difficult it is to pass here at Martinsville Rusty Wallace has managed to move away from that for cars that we see on the screen now [Music] anytime on a short track that you see somebody pulling away then you see another car like Phil DeLeon right here and then three cars almost stacked up behind field Eliot he's not really holding them up or they'd be almost probable that and turn one hair against the cars old fire as he goes into that turn apparently the engine let go and some of the oil got out on the exhaust or something the hair again hard look Terry of the Winston Cup Series boy he does five in the bush as demonstrated how good a race driver he is in the Busch Grand National Division but thing is just not going his way in which to cover well I'd say that is an example of where the term blown up came from that holder blew up and I guess there is the fire that we saw is that all got all big exhaust headers or something of that but it came out from under the car got on the header too burned and it was going out but there was flames coming out of the exhaust pipe so there was also oil in the exhaustion and how about this Rusty Wallace is making a pit stop and Jerry punch is there this seems to be an unscheduled stop Jerry well not as much they were concerned about tire wear and looking at these right front tires in particular early today here at Martinsville rusty comes in they have already changed right-side tires outstanding job for the pit crew Barry Johnson Jimmy Makar and Norman coached of issue but the seconds can a fuel in that car and they had left side cards on the car Dale Earnhardt back on pit road trying to go just coffee the jacket back and he was like a piss pot back up more than me lucky boy back on the track you could see Dale Earnhardt's crew back under the hood again one of the one of the men was holding a timing light they're gonna check the timing on that car as we watch more and more cars making pit stops there's the crew once again funding up the hood of the car and sending Dale back out on the racetrack trying to keep him from going a lap down here's a replay the Harry Gant story boy you can see the fire was already there as the ancient blue going into turn one he got it up on the outside of the track he drove that car up there purposely to try to get it out of the groove and also to try to keep it under control because he had a feeling that maybe a wall would be coming out under there getting on the rear wheels and poetry get to that wall if he didn't hit it the easier he would hit it and so we are under our third caution period of the afternoon and we are live at mark silver Dickinson flight for the zoo [Music] tract roost element crack cleaning up the Harry Gant blown engine we're gonna try to contact Rusty Wallace here rusty this Bob you got a copy on me a little surprising to me rusty that you made the pit stop there was that the schedule or unscheduled on over schedule witnesses oh the cars really run a good window with the power where mr. bass though Fred they get our stuff and a props but we just certainly come in and check in early and maybe if we had a problem can cure but know that what's wrong with them would just never get to stop interject Lutheran tires all right you restart in 17th position you're gonna have any difficulty moving up through the field here on this very tight race track you're on the good years they seem to be holding up well all right rusty we'll talk to you later now Larry Newburgh can't report on why code I know some of the others did not come in that time for his diving fine Bob I'm standing adjacent to the bow tie and the helia pit and we all done here thought that if the leader came in that the reston would follow suit with the tire questions and all but that just didn't happen I talked to Waddle Wilson jeopardise crew chief he said well it's always a gamble and when Jeff decided he wanted to stay out he's sort of us said the president for everybody behind him he said the tires are holding up real well the drivers are saying there's no sense at all that the tires are going away so we decided to stay out but yeah we figured that rusty stop was planned I think some cars are not being shown Jerry punch well they had a huddle behind me going a minute ago here in the Earnhardt fade I think they were calling goal-line plays but actually they're concerning put all their heads together trying to decipher what the problem is they all came back down pit road during this caution flag they changed some more wires in the ignition system it has not helped the car at all they are trying to decipher what could happen fix what could they do next to the car the next yellow flag but so far Earnhardt still missing and missing poorly problems here at Martinsville you know when a car misses down towards the end of the straightaway like Dale Earnhardt that usually points to the carburetor the car wouldn't start for him one time like it was flooded so that points to a carburetor I'd be looking at the carburetor if I was that crew all right you can see that there's a lot of oil dry on the racetrack because of the Harry Gant blown engine so we're gonna take another break and return to Bart spill Virginia speedway in just a moment [Music] it's lab number 46 of 500 at Marksville the race is under green once again and Bill Elliott has the lead Terry Labonte is in second position he has Jeff bodean when the green came out Bodine is back in third spot and Alan Kulwicki Neil Bonnett Greg sacks Ricky Rudd Darrell Waltrip Blake and Ernie Irvan [Music] he's looking pretty strong here as he's right on Billy Elliot's back bumper yes he is I believe that Elliot is holding him up right now he made a good a little bit but my body certainly is putting the pressure on to Bill Elliott but Elliott knows that he maintains a lower part of that groove that is going to be off the tap to get around Eliot in the Ford and Labonte in the Chevy there were nine four to start this race seven Jimmy's six Pontiacs and four Buicks the number 88 car Frank Sachs has performed well in the first laughs of this event regular driver for the [Music] right behind him is Neil Bonnett and there's the subject of another great deal of speculation for 1989 rick hendrick but it is a known fact in Tijuana movies loudly car number 75 and word was here this week of Morgan Shepherd repeat that car be fine Frank sacks in the number 88 bar is Ricky Rudd in car number 26 the Quaker states doing and then comes Darrell Waltrip in car number 17 you know I spent a some time in the garage area yesterday during the final practice sessions and I was watching a lot of these team stuff in there right heads there's a dude time to break that out that Ricky Rudd was cooking in several of the teams have elected to run this new type of not really experimental because we've been kind of working with it over the last several years but this will be one of the first Parkins bill raises for this many cars to run this new it's called a carbon that's now that's brake pad and we'll have to watch and see if the cars were able to keep their brakes hood off for the day number 26 car owned by Kenny Bernstein who is here this weekend watching his car and driver while the first four cars are still nose-to-tail on the track with Bill Elliott appears to be holding up Terry Labonte Terry is sure trying to find that slight mistake by bill that would allow him to go into the yeah I believe in Terry to get around if I believe they pull away from him but getting around if it's one and Phil Elliott those to that moment in carrying the body a template on how to wake you back there these may fail but fuse their race card for that he's the music is by running out breath come here I want to say amazing here talking primarily about the braking system for the car that some things because we heard near that Hartsville and right but you know this Sarah nobody would like to lead this race he'd like to go on around there but he's not really that determined to do it right now at this early in the race Bill Elliott doesn't find thick enough points for leading maybe he can get like you did last week get the points for leading the most laps of the race that pays an extra five bonus points so he doesn't mind leading lolani blockages from here for courtesy of interests he's going to be contentious they'd rather hear while we watched the first floor we could tell you that Rusty Wallace has moved up to 12 position from his restart position of 17 to get back up among the leaders the 30 one car that's able to the past an open attraction is tough to pass on the first four and now the second four that are running right together that is Neil Bonnett Greg sacks Ricky Rudd and Darrell Waltrip and then right behind them he comes late speed and that's the pack of cards that Rusty Wallace will be him and Wallace just picked up another position there's the card number 44 Sterling Marlin that when Templar traitor number 25 to the floor now he's working on the kana 444 they had considered saw that sterling Marling gave him some Florida sickle there's a gold the outside pants off the outside comes rest of them I mean surely doesn't want to give up too much track position buddy something straight away and here he comes Pass so he picks up another position at number two car by the way back there is Ernie Irvan and he started in 29 position and is reading very well he is only 11 points behind Kent Bouchard in the battle for Rookie of the Year honors boy that is soft you know Rusty Wallace has been tired most of these guys trying to pass and racing with have older tires 50 40 laps more on their tires and what rusty hasn't is that automatically doesn't mean you're going to the front I get a lot of traction scenes that are wider with more room at farts ville you just got to Bowl your way on through if you're gonna here's rusty inside of Lake speed turn one rusty passes another product Cory's working so well you can see him set him up coming out of quarter number four dead that's a good he already tried to go on the outside here Sterling Marlin called the inside of Lake Street mountebank fact that he pushes the outside but he tried to save up a crime on the outside and then connection plantations move on the inside that was a pretty good chain of events we saw right there we saw Sterling Marlin passing Lake speed for a long time here comes Rusty Wallace sterling wave from rusty to the outside he said if you're gonna past me you're gonna do it on the outside I'll give you a break and then he knew what rusty got in front of them he thought he was going to route his way under leg speed to get around him and Sterling was able to follow him right on through the hole so that worked out real well we're crushed and turn number actually assists a spin in turn number four is Michael Waltrip got sluice and did a 360 but keeps going he's got some steam coming out of the car though it could be something other than just a spin and of course this will bring out the fourth caution of the afternoon and I suspect it will see some of the other drivers come in here's the pace car waiting to come out he's coming out into the the backstretch it will come out in front of Bill Elliott so the pace car moves out onto the racetrack as Bill Elliott Terry Labonte Jeff bodean Alan Kulwicki Neil Bonnett Greg sacks rusty walnut a brother Darrell Waltrip are behind the pace car now we're going to see if anyone chooses to come in again there are Fitz on both the front stretch and the back stretch Elliott I think it'll take down Terry Kennedy was going to go into the pits and then decided not to Labonte did go in so did Neil Bonnett Sterling Marlin Lake speed and others and you can see the jr. Johnson crew going to work on that number 11 car now while we were watching Rusty Wallace make his move up through the field there we just before then it looked like Bill Elliott was hold of tearing the body up but just before this caution come out Elliott had moved away by about four or five car lengths here's Sterling Marlin beating the Budweiser Chevrolet house at terry was getting a little bit loose here's the replay of this event by Michael Waltrip and he came off the turn for look at look at Dale Earnhardt drove out the inside boys but a good move he made to get by there let's take another look at it from a different direction another close call for Earnhardt but he survived and watched the upper right portion of your screen as the number 30 car gets sideways as a complete 360 and Earnhardt just to the inside making it through by a whisker it's hard to imagine that it could even see at that one with all that smoke that was coming from Papa Waltrip's car we talked many times earlier in the race about how this tracted via points Buster well in that particular case Dale Earnhardt survived a possible points busting situation we are under caution for the fourth time here at Martinsville we have live coverage this afternoon of the goodies 500 and we'll be right back back at Martinsville and in just a moment the green will be coming out once again as the pace car has pulled off the track Bill Elliott will lead them down once again to a restart fourth caution is over Elliott stands on the gas and we resume on lap number 69 now Jeff Bodine is in second position with Terry Labonte having made a pit stop his third breaks axes fourth Darrell Waltrip is 5th ed cops Rusty Wallace at six followed by Ken trainer 12-car find alexander and then Mark Martin it doesn't need to be children and is really almost beyond the time that you would normally come into the pits Bill Elliott Jeff bodean Alan Kulwicki have made a pit stop as again Elliott apparently happy with the set of tires it's on his car right now and he figures maybe there'll be another caution have a lot of cautions here at Marksville at 4:00 already at the first seven clams there's blood I'm very close to Bill Elliott look at this pack of cars and boy you sure got to have good brakes when you're running in a pack of traffic like that Jerry Bob you don't Gary Nelson talking about the new brakes that are using here that a lot of people are using they're not really that new they've been around for about a year year and a half and they're actually made in England by a company named Al Khan which is sort of a derivation of March but the Indy car chassis people over there in England let me say it what I mean here's the old brake pad to reuse for many many years in fact some of the car so have abused they're very good new brake pads are being used here this new Alcon brake is very thick you see them there they're in quite thick and the piston has direct contact to go back to this pad to push it down against the caliper these brakes here are very very expensive almost $3,000 for 70 these brakes are on the front only of Rusty Wallace and Terry Labonte's car they have the old brakes on the rear let's go up pit road Larry Newburgh Larry Jerry I'm standing right behind the Terry Labonte pin and very close to Rusty Wallace Eliot and kind of surprised here that the other two leaders didn't come in to piss here's the set of tires that just came off of Terry Labonte's tower we've lift them over the where is close to normal all of them except the right front I asked Tim brewer to describe well what would you call this tire he said very very sticky the rubber the other layer of rubber has last green flag laps Eggman surprise another leader just how many more green ride laughs it will last remember fuel wise you can go almost 180 laps here but the tires hard to say how far well we certainly are not seeing though a repeat of what we saw last weekend over when the tires would only go about 35 or so laughs we have none of that kind of problem so far today ricky rudd moving up through traffic and there is terry labonte right ahead of him brett bodine also a number 15 to the 44 car of Sterling Marlin I guess the right front gets the most we're here on the when you go into these turns so you've put a lot of pressure on that right front tires a lot of the weight skips over to the right front the powerful bit more cause where unless you have the Gary if they're if the car is losing the back end not holding to that you spent the wheels coming off the turn of course that would reverse the situation well you're right this track has its own set of problems both front and rear take a lot of abuse but you know what we were talking about with the brakes the brakes seem to be the key here at Barnesville as you watched Sterling Marlin at mark part shrine it's a jockey for position with Terry Labonte trying to get on around you think of the brakes as stopping the car every time they get to the corner twice a lap they really stand on a brake pedal that generates an awful lot of heat and one of the biggest fears of everybody at Marksville with the new core and the core they're able to run hotter and hotter what that does and transfers that heat into the right front tire and if you're not careful if you use your brakes too hard that people will actually melt the rubber on the tire it caused it to fall out just as you're going to turn these and they're trying not to overuse their brakes all right Dale earnheardt at number three is running 11 that flank behind him is Sterling Marlin now Marlin making a bid for that 11 spot as he goes inside of Earnhardt going into turn one but Dale holds him off for the moment now let's see what happens as Earnhardt's car goes to the outside of the track and Marlin goes to the inside in turn four three Sterling is going to get that position I believe side by side at the moment but Yahoo sterling comes out of the corner he's going to take over 11th position Rob Dale Earnhardt and here comes Terry Labonte right behind Sterling Marlin so positions are being traded here as Earnhardt is on the outside of the racetrack and losing positions that car still apparently not performing the way he wanted to all right very close racing right there it's hard to watch Dale Earnhardt and see where he's really off you know he's almost faint maybe blue to just a little bit there on the straightaway Carnegie Drive that is certainly the name of the game here at marked and more Sterling Marlin we asked him where talk to yourself during the race about saving the car for the end yeah you have to you know use half days self gets put off break and it's how hard to do than supporters and some straightaway saw with a cold as a sharp here so look it's real tough but you just have to talk to setup all day and just you'll baby the car baby the brakes and you can't you can't get back in 25th twentieth and because the leaders got a whole crack here he'll laugh in a minute so uh get run hard hit run easy so just have to find a happy medium and you'll be zone called Sterling Marlin an eighth and Winston Cup points coming in Ricky Rudd has passed Terry Labonte and Milani has new tire made a pit stop during that last caution as well one fellow want to give a call to he's running at the top and we normally don't see him up there in the top ten Bob is Jimmy driver P Arena back alka-seltzer car number 52 he's running in ninth place holding his own Kyle Petty is card two running in fifth place and Jimmy me just hanging right in there and here is Ricky Rudd passing Sterling Marlin are trying to Rud yes moves into 11th position now so we've seen some real training of positions back there in this second content meanwhile up front it is still bill Elliot leading Geoff Bodine and Alan Kulwicki as we have completed 87 laps and they're still 25 cars and the lead lap and in seventh position there is Rusty Wallace remember he made a pit stop very early was among the first to make a pit stop but he's moved up through traffic very well now he had been running in sixth position but a car that's revealed to move right in front of him now is Pike Alexander who just passed rusty a few laps ago rusty I don't think caught him too much he said okay boy if you won't run that hard right now I can see Bill Elliott I'm speaking for Rusty Wallace and he said I don't want to punish my car right now but there's Mike Alexander who is running in sixth place position at that drop question Wallace back in seven [Music] so there you have the first floor as they approached some of the slower traffic now penny Parsons at car number 90 will move aside and allow the pasture traffic to pass on the high side Eliot babe taking as we are nearing the 100 lap mark in this one and here is a possible bid for second by Alan Kulwicki he moved to the inside of Geoff Bodine coming off the backstretch now they moved down the front straightaway in Bodine is holding off to wikkeez challenge but let's see what happens in the corners they'll trade paint right here you can bet on that here they come out of the corner still slower traffic ahead that is Richard penny who is being left by the leaders and Bodine successfully holds off a very serious challenge for second by Alan Kulwicki Richard Petty has to be having some stored for problems yesterday he was on the fastest cars in practice and now he's been class he's shown in 24th position right now Richard of course has won more times here at Martinsville than any other driver petty has 15 wins on this racetrack the top ten we review as we are 89 laps into the five-member that will complete the goodies five Jenkins Ned Jarrett Gary Nelson Jerry punch and Larry nuber back at Martinsville Virginia Speedway for the goodies 500 Winston Cup race on this very cloudy overcast and in some cases rain threatening afternoon we're watching Bill Elliott lead Geoff Bodine Alan Kulwicki and break sacks Darrell Waltrip is behind sacs that might Alexander Rusty Wallace and Ricky Rudd right as rain moved up there the fact that they made a pit-stop his car is wearing to work in the job Kenny Bernstein professor durricks number 26 we saw Alan Kulwicki get a little anxious just before the break and trying to make a move on Geoff Bodine and then as they went up to the lab Richard Petty it will be had to pull back in behind Geoff Bodine seemed like he was really trying to go Jeff was didn't really want to give up the position Geoff was fighting hard for that second spot so I think Alan Kulwicki decide to sit in behind him and hope for a mistake maybe he'll get another opportunity to get around to they're 21 car is showing it the lead left right now off the Waltrip is the last car on the lead lap he's running at 21st position Bill Elliott of course the leader Jeff Boyd on second alpha a key third Greg sacks fourth Darrell Waltrip it el Baca Alexander is six Rusty Wallace seven eight is Kenny Schrader Ricky right now if tonight and in tenth place is Sterling Marlin the car number 11 of Terry Labonte is in 11th Jimmy beans is now moved back to 12 Dale Earnhardt is 13 14 in the ring Ernie Irvan Kyle Petty has dropped back to 15th he was running camp not too long ago still in the lead lap mark Parton ranked 16th Lake speed 17 Neil Bonnett 18th 19th is Brett behind Dave Marcus's 20th and Michael Waltrip in 21st place all in the lead left and those showed as a lap down as the for car driven by Rick well the 67 of Francie Benny Parsons Richard Petty Davey Allison and also Bobby Hillin juniors shown a lap down at two laps down to be the number 10 car of Cambridgeshire Nala bid for second position again as Kuwaiti would like very much to get around Geoff Bodine and take over second but the opportunity just up in three minutes out morality it was almost as if Jeff said if you're going to faster you're going to have to have two wheels that gets that curving on the inside it's just tougher Alan Kulwicki knots a really rip study the tire again Jeff's car you don't have to make a lot of contact here at market they all the foot one or two cards are both garden out of control Mohan touching each other even though we can see a lot of contact here but when you get in side by side you start to bank you around and locked up and spin around moving inside of michael waltrip and the frontstretch and now there are 20 cars on the lead lap as Michael goes : contact there between jetboat ID and Michael Walter when they came out of turn number 2 that was a pretty solid head I'll be anxious to see whether there was any damage to that number 5 car so we don't say in his smoke so far coming from the tires that's usually the first sign if when they go into the turn if there is smoke from the car that would have knocked the fender in against the tire but on the short tracks they're able to cut out more of the sheet metal around the tire so it they do get here to concede we'll watch the replay as it comes off the turn to jump it on the inside and he does the epochal Walter pretty simple of hamster and with the right front of the car but I don't believe it hurting too much because with these a linkage in a sheetmetal situation got quads critical as it is on the bigger crack I think Waddell Wilson Jeff would ask who chief might be looking for a new door when they get this car back to the south because they really did shave in a right-side door on Jeff's car running in that as Alan Kulwicki and Jerry punches near his head Alan Kulwicki fricative practices nothing when he came here from the Midwest around Indiana London taxi rental out there are just like Martinsville they're married right away flat corners and tight now what Alan came here as a rookie back in 1986 did fury had to say we lost about the Bristol made it up Anthony spill he also had a good run at Richmond in his race car Walter let's make that lap up and fitting Phil so those surprised at all well we here today Brett Ladon make a good unscheduled pit stop on the backstretch he's the first of the cars that were running in the top 20 to make a green flag pit stop for brother hunter 10 left so far they this Larry nubra pointed out earlier they go about 185 188 laps here on thang of cool [Music] we're too much Brown school it's constantly under green like this for Fred bow dine four-tire stop under green has got to be over two laughs and you'll do it maybe two and a half most of three laps will be due and he had just been left by the leaders before he came into Neal Bannen is also being flat the number 75 car he was running in the early States the race but has been drumming back and now the first three put a lap down the 17 car in the lead lap Ricky now Corral they 27th car off rescue Wallace a rusty about driving very conservative right now now maybe good set of tires that he has on as the ones he had on earlier he got a wonder if he wishes he hip-hop made that pit stop but he's driving very conservative able to dare now I was watching press t Wallace just a few laps ago when he gets on the gas the back wheels spin the cars a little loose on her power he's having a hard time getting and trying to get loose on it make some adjustments I'm sure he's not happy with this and he was the early leader in the race the first three have separated themselves from the others as first second and the position as brakes AXA was having a pine run for Buddy Baker this afternoon the top 15 will show you now with 115 laps completed Darrell Waltrip in theft in six through ten position Mike Alexander's Ricky Rudd Rusty Wallace and Schrader and Sterling Marlin 11 through 15 Burghardt hurtless and heavy unscheduled pit stop for Rusty Wallace Kodiak Connie I come flat right rear tire and tough break for fu olive he will lose a lap on the green flag pit stop [Music] dear Phil it is incredible not only in Martinsville but really since that crash at Bristol this team has done that real great success although rusty has a couple of races well they did a tremendous job last week at Dover of fighting back two different times he was - laughs now that finished third in the race so he has run very well but they've had a lot of things happen to my boy I'm sure that they are second-guessing themselves now hold that first pit stop they made now maybe that power would have gone flat - but they got to be wondering so I don't think he's in too bad a shape if the race continues to run under green he just lost one lap with that as far as I know leaders should be pitied sometime in the next 40 50 laps so we'll have to watch and see if he can get this lap back all right let's go down a Jerry punch again who can show us that tire that just came off Rusty's fire well they're having a real concern here the desk of the Goodyear engineers are standing by to take a look at this tire the rugby wall came off the car and now good year and taking a look to see if there's a clutch place in the tire a lot of crews have comes out here trying to look at this fire but they are concerned about wearing or possibly coming apart and now they have diagnosed the problem there is a cut segment here in this tire on the shoulder of the tire do me make our here and try to take a knife and not using came in the new tire few minutes ago about how this oh and a bit for second now again as Kulwicki is still trying to take over that second spot from Jeff bodean I think he may have it this time yet now that Kulwicki moves the second position when talking about the luck of the arrestee while his team in the past few races I think that only points out the determination and a skill of rusty himself because he has had things like that go wrong but every time seems to battle back in this right there at the end of the race well it is the hustler there's no hard and pride to keep that car running upfront and what they do have a disaster it took a long time dead but Alan finally got you well he'd made the mood of going into turn one down on the inside and made it stick for himself and that's the way you have to do it here at Hartsfield you have to set up and take a long time and let's go down to Larry Hoover in the pit for more on that story 25 laps you guys does Ellen think so too yeah [Music] a little bit the car is working except that well these places right now well we're look at the bonnet stars and some other cars that get lost Dongfang [Music] another day other cars are look good now period add one other phenomena [Music] I've been staying a little more pieces flying than I did in the earlier laps and I don't know if that means anything [Music] Allen is making a bid for and successfully getting the lead from Billy Elliot so we were right when we were talking about how Allen was being held up when he got Bodeen he caught up quickly name to Bill Elliott now he shoots past le that goes into the same to have the Panthers car on the red track we're watching again as he comes down turn one just like he went on the inside of code I've got too many laps to go move right down on the inside of the racetrack and took the measure up Bill Elliott ran even with him all the turn to knowing he has the bandage so when he goes into turn three when the other side of the car Elliot has no choice but to back off and let it go so that was a beautiful part since spilled pass right there Alan Kulwicki did it perfectly it have to rough up Phil Ali just just kind of grow fonder of gonna do and he was past it just we have one of the cars that was in the top ten that get the pits Mike Alexander the number 12 mineral highlight Buick is in Florida and to have the hood up on the car Bob he was showing some smoke just the Lapithos before he came into the pit so this might be terminal for Mike Alexander who had made a good ride he was running in the second edition and boy at the rate that they're travelling here today they're they're not really slowing down like they're acting like this disco sprint race especially Alan Kulwicki here he's now pulling away from Villa laughing car after car like every couple laps they put somebody else to lap down this is a pretty unusual form article considering they're on the tighter that they started on and we're up there last one thirty two right now and there's Mike Alexander's car big push behind the wall as a very unfortunate set of circumstances for Mike who was running in the top ten when the problem developed for him you know bobby allison is recovering from injuries suffered at the copa del rey said earlier this year driving that 12 pillar on my car I spoke with Bobby Allison day I've been really concerned about Sami got a chance to finally talk to him but I got to visit him in the hospital but he was unconscious now Bobby sounds 100% into Bobby as if his own self and I'd like to say idea Bobby we would come back soon and also express our same sentiments here is probably one of the most sought after drivers in Winston Cup racing a lot of teams would like to have him driving for them but he'd like to stay in his own so what are your plans for 1989 Alan right now we're trying to put all the pieces in place to come back with my own team a little bigger better next year so far all the to drive brother teams have not been any better I think we've got a lot of potential the winner race is over any background of my own people is he responsible for next year the story about Alan Kulwicki who right now leads the goodies 500 here at Martinsville as he passes he'll Marcin 10 post bill another lap down look at the interval that at alland has opened up over Bill Elliott still back there in Jeff behind down [Music] we're live at Martinsville Virginia Speedway for the goodies 500 and we'll be back right after this back in Martinsville Virginia where an Allen public in the CRX for car number seven leads this race however he was supposed to have come in for fuel a couple of laps ago either experiencing some radio problems or is trying to stretch it because he chose no sign up coming in for that fuel stop thought I would be a little surprised that he would need fuel this early he's over the 145th laughs right now I would have thought he could go 175 to 180 laughs right now but I don't know maybe he's not getting to go to fuel Oh the guy on the move is definitely Darrell Waltrip in car number 17 Elliott may be out of fuel or at least he's slowing dramatically for a pit stop here he is coming off a corner number 4 and into the pits Elliott rolling to a stop Jerry punch will call this stop well the car is not running when he comes by here and rolls will halt with bill radioed in and said the car started sputtering over in a backbend so they may have tried to straighten it too far Oh fuel one thing about the racetrack you burned more fuel here at Martinsville and any other Elliot's cooldown in sixteen point seven seconds most of the crew chief over to for today's race consider stretch again much more than 145 150 because you pulled so much here here a lot of fuel and you burn it up quickly Eliot ran 145 laps Wiki is still out there on the racetrack and now the question is is he trying to stretch a too far he's in quarter number three let's say because in this no sir he stays on the accelerator things that amazed me this is the slowest crackling this is the shortest track we've run and yet we get the worst fuel mileage here in March to the number 26 car the number 17 car are side by side as Jeff bodean takes himself out the serial and goes in for a pit stop there's Rusty Wallace right behind Darrell Waltrip at 26 who run in the 17 of Wallace a rather Waltrip are battling for that third position here's rusty on the inside remember he is still a lap down from that flat tire that he experienced a few laps ago Geoff Bodine has completed work on that car in the pit area and he rolls back out onto the racetrack now Rusty Wallace and of course Bill Elliott and now Jeff Foton are hoping that this thing will stay green for a while that the others will have to come in no green flag conditions as opposed to a caution there's a good chance after this router fits up with no conscience the Rusty Wallace will be again the leader or near the lead depending on how long at this top stage so Alan Kulwicki is staying out there and really it seems to us stretching his luck as far as fuel consumption is Larry down at Alec spin what are they telling you down there is Allen coming in soon sobs we've all been prepared down here for the last he's not overly concerned about Whitney has decided to come in the man who started this race in sick position comes in [Music] he decided to wait he was comfortable that everything was going well they are changing the right side rubber now they go to don't change on the left side tires stay with the tires that he has he stopped it next surprise is all the right side are changed I'm looking at them right now they are not showing any that's for where L&S lost the lead however he has excellent Ella Kovac Waltrip is also aunt for a pit stop they've completed work on that car quickly and Darrell goes back out on the racetrack the leader of the event is the 26th Wagner's debuting Jim in five ricky rudd he's right ahead of Alan Kulwicki rallies the left the head of Alan Kulwicki that was a long pit stop al-kuwaiti almost 90 seconds cruel in a career called the car and now 17 and 27 mlicki are all on the same lap walter made a bunch quicker pit stop he was some five or six seconds behind came out right behind it you can see that that party is there right now after Whitney will sleep in to go up the test drinking road and get back in the lead lap with those new tires on so what is going to have to be having a pit stop before long also but for the moment he is in the lead remember he fended off sequence with everybody also have probably a few more laps before he is indeed a pit stop so the second first round of history like that [Music] [Music] every part of the country has its unique and beautiful aspects and we have seen some great peaceful scenes here in Virginia we came on Thursday is been a great weekend and we are seeing some great racing here to cap everything off now kolecki and number seven is trying to push trying to go into the lead and he does successfully here comes Waltrip Friday the same thing remember Ricky Rudd hit it off sequence and so therefore it will be a while before he has to come in he still remains right they are running into sixth and seventh position that means that we have seven cars in the lead lap Ricky Rudd is the leader creek tank hasn't stopped yet he's in second place had the car number 44 on Sterling Marlin who's made a pit stop during one of the early cautions is running third Dale Earnhardt fifth all of those drivers it's tough earlier functions have been written so they can run another friend get the pants here are the number nine car and the five car down to Ricky Rudd but they are in night and in 10th position Bill Elliott and bassant happened here at BARC still there's only three cars in the lead lap right now in the yellow flag were to come out Darrell Waltrip Alan Kulwicki and Ricky Rudd would be the only free card Rusty Wallace is trying to get back up there but he's evidence he's having his problems again looked like he was knowing that he's faulty he's calling back again well Gary the car number 11 and 44 and 88 car in the class but they'll have fifth stops coming up for too long as you're right then Eliott led the first portion on this rain in the drop of the green flag we started in the event in third place in that Levi's Garrett Chevrolet 166 laps are completed as much as 35 or 44 laps before Ruud and those others will have to command warm fuel stop the only one of those that's running in the top five right now is drag sacks of his current being shown in second place I don't think you stopped during any of those early caution but they're about ready to break down now so he has certainly got the best fuel mileage of anyone after this point the Greg sacks who's 22nd is coming in the 5th right now good call Ned here's the 88 machine the 26 remains on the racetrack there's the great Sachs car [Music] and here just went a lap down to Ricky Rudd as they changed the right-side tires on that car that's what everybody else been doing filling it up fuel painter on and a lot of a lot of success here on the Hartsville Speedway at the modified division of NASCAR pretty good pit stop for Greg sacks as he picks up speed Ayers Rudd the leader of the race in car number 26 and in just about a foot Dale Earnhardt our heart is turned they're running and the fourth [Music] right [Music] all right Gerard while Dale Earnhardt ricky rudd right now is doing something that everybody always wishes they can do it that is get off sequence just set the right time when everybody else stays on the racetrack can make their pit stops and pay it off later everybody's always trying to guess what's gonna happen later into the race ricky rudd right now has done a good job he's got I can go another 30 or so have the cars head well let me correct myself Earnhardt had dropped back he was not running fourth most Alan Kulwicki and Darrell Waltrip and Pam so he was really running him so the top five are Rudd Sterling Marlin the number eleven car of Terry Labonte fourth is Alan Kulwicki and fifth Dale Earnhardt is making another pit stop it has not been a very good race for Dale Earnhardt so far see some damage there on the right front of the race car there brand-new cars you can do powers on you can see the sticker called the lower corner of my front tires if they don't very good pit stop it usually is [Music] and you can see the leader run in the green 26 right behind him Jerry punch is watching the progress on Ricky Rudd the head of meeting this morning in the Ricky Rudd car hauler Kenny Bernstein Larry McReynolds Ricky Rudd the crew and their goal today was just to finish the race why you say well when they have finished the short track race this year they have finished second they finished second earlier in the year at Richmond a second at whoops pearl and the other four track rights they have not been even had three engine problems in one wreck there's a can we finish today we gotta finish second or better so would you he won't defendant here at Martin Vail he would like to finish one spot higher than he has on the short tracks and win here at Martinsville this afternoon so he leaves what 175 laps complete we'll be back with more of our live covering Marcus fifth caution of the afternoon out on Martinsville Speedway it's Michael Waltrip who has spun down the backstretch he has had an ill-handling racecar since this event began he spun down in turn number four earlier and now lucid insists headed the wrong direction on the backstretch on lap number 179 and this is going to be a break for Ricky Rudd it would have had a pit stop coming up in the best way or 25 left let's go to Larry Hoover with Ricky Rudd defense they were ready to go at a McGriddle to get on the radio right away when he saw the yellow flag Michael Waltrip spun out right in front of us so they were the first ones to know that there was going to be a yellow flag they're going to all four corners of the car good you're on all four corners of course Kenny Bernstein very active in drag racing this has been a good year Dean we'll be getting to the middle to the end and Ricky Watkins in and out very efficiently a great stop for the leader of this race and a great break for the leader of the race rod as they they're Sterling Marlin who's also in for a pit stop Jerry punch Norman got pitched in coming into pit row down by fire they would run the left the cars we buy our lines of under all whole mobile short track back in the spring here when he finished second good pit stop for price tires and fuel surly Weiland heads back to turn one and so does Terry Labonte and finally here comes Dale Earnhardt also out of pit road Allan Poe incubator for power James Dean inspector FIFRA so does Michael Waltrip and Darryl Waltrip comes into the pits all right let's go back and see if we can pick up on this michael waltrip incident well he was already spinning in front of the leader you could see Ricky Rudd coming off the turn to as Waltrip has spun down to the inside hit the inside retaining wall and bounce back depth of track now let's go to tips and Jerry punch where Darrell Waltrip is well Eddy Bickersons if Hammonds Davy Jones the tide crew bill Wilbur go to work on Darrell Waltrip Chevrolet brand new race car banjo Mackey prepared fired they pulled some sheet metal away the left rear he just a little bit of bumping with some of the other cars and he's down and away he had to catch up to the field before he could come here because he was almost to lap down if you remember he and Malecha wiki has passed ricky rudd and got back into lead lap but he was not too far in front of Ricky Rudd when this caution came out so he had to wait until he caught up to the field before he become in fifth and the caution does remain out on Martinsville Virginia Speedway because of a crash in the backstretch involving Michael Waltrip we'll be right back [Music] we're back at martinsville still under caution to the goodies 500 with ricky rudd in the lead Sterling Marlin running second third is Terry Labonte fourth number 7 Carmela quick and then and Darrell Waltrip being shown in the top five at the moment it's a very beautiful racetrack despite the fact that it can be a very ugly situation for the drivers here is an ESPN quick fact or is this a quack back Jerry punch quick thanks are brought to you by Quaker State motor oil debate Houston sport quality always has always will hello hi you know nothing nothing beats a relaxing Mountain picnic here on a Sunday afternoon beautiful area of the Blue Ridge Mountains and find a nice pond catch a few winks soak up some rays maybe nice cold soda listen to some tunes and maybe even check out the scores to get a chance but you know we're not at a park in the Blue Ridge Mountains we're here at Martinsville Speedway and this duck pond well it's one of the featured attractions here when the fans come every Sunday they got out of their cars and walk to the main gate escorted by hundreds and hundreds of duck and geese it's just an outstanding attraction at Martinsville but you would think you were at some Natural Preserve in the mountains the fans loved coming here for racing and for wildlife and so before we get back to racing I'm gonna catch a few winks I think yo we'll see you after a while all right punch back to work in the pit area now the Green has come out and we are back to racing on lap number 185 now Rusty Wallace has passed Ricky Rudd so that means that rusty is back on the lead lap that is correct he would be the sixth position six cars on the beat left just a moment ago on the restart he was a around Ricky Rudd and get back in the lead left so we'll see if he can stay there now Jeff mode I'm living up far behind Oh Larry nuber has some interesting conversation with NASCAR - standing by down here and he had Larry McReynolds engaged in about a two-minute conversation during their last yellow flag that's a long talk in the middle of the race the yellow quiet comes out officials are watching that no penalty but it was a long conversation forced to slow down about his car is working well and this is scorners trouble over in turn four rick wilson has fun over in turn four and the caution is out again this will know the caution is not out a starts aid be a break for Rusty Wallace the Rick Wilson has got his car going as you can see he spun down on the inside of the racetrack and so Jebidiah down opportunity to perhaps put himself on the lead lap with the leaders he's right behind Ricky Rudd and trying to get a lap back as is Bill Elliott now we go back and take a look at what happened up there well he's already in the spending process going around down on the inside of the racetrack makes the complete 360th is run all the way you know really didn't look like he ever let off the gas it it head no it really did like another car might have bumped him as he started off of that turn cause it was family of course we couldn't see there so the green remains out now there are five power well make that six now the Wallace's go back into the Atlantic just ahead Ricky Rudd he's just barely overly level what a nightmare trying to score these kinda rates especially when like Ricky Rudd and several of the other cars were earlier now they've all had the opportunity under this last yellow to make pit stops they're all back to zero again so it'll be a little easier to keep up with a story from here [Music] now Ricky Rudd is going to be making gesture to the black babies he comes down through here so hey get him out of the way he's holding me up I've got to get away from bowed on back here I'm sure that Ricky feels in his mind right now that he's faster than Rusty Wallace for rescue Wallace feels that he stands at the brink and he's in a path you about front of me right now [Music] but looks like he's trying to set rusty up a time for just hasn't found the chance to once again one hand having to run harder right now that he wants to he's rhyming trying to get back up and foot Rusty Wallace laughs now we understand that his brakes might not be the baby boy it's too early at the race to lose you right they're not five 200-lap mark yeah Ricky is in a real predicament here if he it does have brake problems he doesn't he wants to take it easy his brakes will come back if he doesn't use a you would like to keep a guy like Rusty Wallace at gentle night he would like to get keep Jeff what idle lap down Plus rusty lap down because he knows he's gonna have to contend with them later is dropping those two cars are he really has some decisions to make right along here [Music] he has dropped back a little bit down front Rusty Wallace not writing him quite as hard as he was a little bit earlier and I suppose that he is maybe trying to conserve those brakes a little bit so ricky rudd leaves the goodies 500 at richmond on the shore track looked like he had a sure win isn't hard to swallow the feet under circumstances like that well it's pretty tough [Music] another wake is another way other days the chance in doesn't happen to me too many times for them it happens to everybody but I guess the worst thing about it you don't get lined up in that kind of a position you need to take advantage of it when you do so it's hard on you but yet what can you do about it it's over it's done with and just look forward to next week but it's kind of hard to take well he certainly has to be enjoying himself right now in the lead now what about that break situation that we mentioned Larry the information you guys got off the scanner was absolutely right the brakes aren't just right this is that new carbon metallic brakes brake pads that they are using they were one of the first teams to use it and as gary pointed out little real serious problems is that they work too well sometimes they build up too much heat and Larry McReynolds does not know exactly what the problem is but Ricky says I don't have as much breaks I had in the early part of the race course they've talked to the radio and said hey we've got 300 laps to go more than half of this race so Ricky try and conserve them as much as you can get his home brakes Gary you said all the tracks are just on one like this to require a lot of breaking well what we've got here is like dr. Jerry punch and talked about earlier tiebreak that is a braking system that is the caliper and brake rotor that is different than what those other teams have been using for the past several years now what they're doing on top of the outline that some of the teams are running just about all of the teams have gone to disbarment metallic brake pad brake lining so almost all the seeds are using this carbon brake lining so what that does it creates more heat just because your brakes are working better you're going to generate more heat and that heat will cause the brake fluid to boil the inside of the brake calipers and when that happens the driver goes right away because the brake pedal goes almost to the floor and they'll tell you on the radio every time and tell you they got some kind of a brake problem because drivers don't like going into the turn at Barnesville and having that break that will go all the way down to the floor one a nightmare that must be alright let's review for you now the top 15 as rut continues to work on Rusty Wallace to try to put him a lap down once again but rusty is able to stay ahead for the moment top 15 drug lapaki sterling marlin Alan Kulwicki and darrell waltrip also on the lead lap in sixth is Rusty Wallace a lap down is Geoff Bodine Phil Elliott Greg sacks and Dale Earnhardt 11 through 15 Schrader Ernie Irvan Lake speed Davey Allison and deal bonded with 205 laps complete we're back at Martinsville for the goodies 500 Winston Cup race nice to have you with us on this Sunday afternoon is kind of a gloomy and gray day here in Virginia it's held a crowd down just a little bit but nevertheless a good crowd is on and despite the weather condition there is the leader Rickey rod in the number 26 car in second position is the number 11 of Terry Labonte Sterling Marlin is in third but now stands to lose that to Alan Kulwicki who goes to the inside it takes third away from Sterling Marlin so Kulwicki is third farthest back to Morgan in position Davey Allison is sandwiched between the Bonnie and the seven valid Kovic you can see for that Amber shot there as Tara the body came off the turn and got off the gas pedal his car right in here when he gets the gas belly a car almost gets light on the left front tire there's so much horsepower to the rear tire acceleration right here you can almost see a little bit of daylight underneath his left front tire right there look at that he's really getting a good bite off the turn that's why he's up in second placement but they be Alison who's trying to move around the car number 11 a pair of the body is running in 14th position he's three laps down but his cars running well run now there's maliki having moved into third position now and again you can see how the left front tire comes up some of these cars as they power out of the corners that is that drag racing you know about a lot of the dragsters have gone to this country starting gate this is almost on track darrell waltrip now as he is catching up to the number 44 of sterling marlin and now here comes Allan Coe in the outside of baby Allison at the front stretch he goes side by side with Davey now let's not forget about the 17 car of Darrell Waltrip has been very competitive all afternoon Jerell he has such a record here at this racetrack you know at the driver he's won at this track for all the owners that he's driven for he is he is really phenomenal here at this racetrack but you know one of the things I remember put Darrell working with Darryl here at Martinsville that he just kind of takes this race one lap at a time doesn't get any hurry and he'll always seem to be there at the finish in his car stays together the matter of fact Darrell Waltrip has won eight times on this racetrack here's Jerry punch in the pit area you know Jerry Laughlin really wanted to win this race today Bartonville his win last year here really changed the tone of the entire team Jeff Hammond he Dickinson all the crew tonight he really came together after that hard fall class level they built a brand new race car banjo Matthews go police car forum and it brought it up here three weeks ago to do some tire testing for Goodyear please had more left on these tires the brand new race cars anyone else up here little Wonderwall curb running so well here's Martin James there's alpha wicked still trying to get around Davey Allison the inside of the racetrack it's tough to pass a car that's running as you interstate he isn't running on the car he's given some road there but he's still racing hard little loose there the third and fourth turns massive contact which we'd Kulwicki and Davey Allison for indica devil click on it go coming in hey I mean I'm running for position up I think I saw a hand gesture to their but you know talking about the brakes and I can remember in the 70s in 77 78 79 working here at bartylla darrell waltrip we were always concerned with the brakes one other thing we did in the garage area was one time we put a real stiff spring on the brake pedal so he really had to make an effort to push on a brake pedal he would it be just kind of resting his foot on her and keeping the heat in the brakes but after a while we just felt like the drivers leg just got stronger and he still found himself you know just kind of riding the brake now buddy cool on the straightaways so then after that we put a little red light on the dashboard every time his foot was on the brake pedal the light came on he was on a brake pedal and later we did it with Bobby Allison and Ricky Rudd here at this truck and all of them have agreed that once you do it one time at this racetrack you learn how long the red lights how to keep the red lights off as long as you can look at Alan Kulwicki he is really pumping well in that part dirt tracking and off those corners and now he threatens to take away second position from Terry Labonte let's see if he accomplishes it they come up quarter number four they're side by side a little bit of contact Terry Labonte just won't give up second spot he may take the position but hey Alan Kulwicki is looking good this is an especially coming off of the turn crop you see he was able to dip down there as the bodies car shot out a little bit Gary Nelson is there a moment ago he goes into turn three side by side with you but is not accelerating quite as good off apparent for be able to pass amount one into turn one and here is coal wiki now they still remain side-by-side labonte fighting for everything that's successfully passes Terry Nalani and now the Whitney boost is second that coming off the turn too is nobody's weakness it looked like right now so sterling Marlins will try to do things same to me as my body's car goes up a little bit it comes out of the turn so there is second third fourth and fifth right there together the number seven oka would be the 11th of the body the 44 Marlin and the 17th at Darrell Waltrip now that Jerry punch once again well Tim Road terry labonte cars yeah we were talking a minute ago about the left front tire of Terry's car coming off the ground it's about really hooking the car up but the power to the ground above the corner [Music] figuration later on and thanks toppers so about that corner because I Vegas your car is sorted back sliding now Cola key has gone behind firma Marlon did Patsy the car he's having a hostel a car work the wheel the game [Music] use the tires nest read the card running out well right now well they are somewhat at a disadvantage here it all has a short track car they wanted over Delaware this far they're running today actually is the intermediate Speedway car not there tim was saying there is that the car is getting a good bite off the turn so what it's not doing is using his front tires at the same time so you've got on the racecar you wish you could use all four bump equally to get around the corners and just use your rear tires maybe for driving up once you get straight Terry Labonte's car is carrying down that front tire causing the card is really abused two three tires that are still on the ground yeah ticking keep all four tires working on a track like this you just simply it'll catch up with you after a period of time you can see the car can faint you lose darrell waltrip still on the move he's running in fourth place there right now right on the back bumper Sterling Marlin in the Piedmont airlines s mobile Marlin running in the third position there is Daryl's progress started 20th was up to 8th at the end of 50 laps was bet at the end of 100 was runner up at the end of 150 and down two people that would like very much to see a caution flag come out right now terry labonte so they can perhaps free up that car will then also Rusty Wallace who is continuing to run or is he I mean it's about to say he's continuing to run ahead of Ricky Rudd and be on the same lap but that's not necessarily the case is Rudd and Wallace are side by side who has the advantage here that's Phil Parsons on the inside there drag race down front straightaway here rusty fighting desperately to stay on the lead lap and Ruud would like very much to put him back and I believe I'm not gonna make any judgment right now they're side by side position I think that you'll be able to take him after a couple of laps because the inside position is place to go you can see those coming off that turn and is able to move ahead although rested not giving up for a second there downside but now brett-brett car is system good coming off the parents against good traction and he has a okay so we go back down to five cars on the lead lap as rusty once again goes a lap down we'll be back with more of our live coverage here in Martinsville Virginia we are packed for the goodies 500 at Martinsville Virginia Speedway with 239 laps completed so we are very close to the halfway point well Thursday night at 8 o'clock right after Speed Week we'll have for you the crawl free of Portugal and here are some of the highlights that occurred in this and they're the top 5 as we near the halfway point of the goodies 500 [Music] well the engineers on the train and look over the backstretch wall and see Martinsville Speedway as the train track runs right along the backstretch and we welcome you back to Martinsville Virginia Speedway where Ricky Rudd in the number twenty six point where state killing continues to lead his race and he quite frankly is pulling away from the rest of the field call with your side marlyn third Waldrop is fourth and Terry Labonte is in fifth but there's certainly no evidence that Ricky Rudd is experiencing a real serious problem now that car is working very well very well about six seconds ahead of elenco 18 who is running in second place Charlie Colin has food that's the third now he got around Darrell Waltrip darrell waltrip running fourth carrying the body fit those are five cars in the lead lap and right now Ricky Rudd is only about a quarter of the way out from lapping the car number 11 on paradise now let's review our mid race summary ricky rudd the leader at the halfway point he had led 86 in the 250 laps the average speed in the race seventy-three point nine six one miles an hour five caution periods for a total of 30 laps we have had six leaders and six lead changes and five cars on the lead lap at the halfway point though Morgan Shepherd also involved in that incident Harrigan had an it should go away Mike Walter Mike Alexandre rather so that's where we are in the goodies 500 and now we see Bill Delhi at number nine in the number 5 car of Jeff bodean as they battle for 7th position and right behind him is Tim is the second place car of Kovac II remember that boat I did Bill Elliott our lap down just in front of them and Rusty Wallace who is currently running in the sixth position he also in the lamb tail who died we saw it from the first hundred laps trying to passing for second position but now coming up to put a lap on him is able to move up on the inside pretty easily they're pretty tough but you said get it coming off the furnace the three that are in contention for the Winston Cup namely Bill Elliott Darrell Dale Earnhardt and the Rusty Wallace Marmol now they are in the second ten where that second five five through ten so but nobody stands to pick up a great amount of points on anybody else and now Dale Earnhardt who is shown in 11th position [Music] but they there are five cars that are what left out that being a rescue Wallace in sixth place [Music] Rick's exit site and the fifth place car [Music] you know I was thinking about what we saw in the railroad tracks just just behind the backs they play grandstands I mean their grandstands go up to a fans event there's a railroad track right there then you go here to the front stretch and right behind the front stretch grandstands is a big duck pot so I got a feeling if we went way back in history when they first built this racetrack they say we want to build a race track right here between these railroad tracks between this duck pond and make it as big as we can and that is probably why this track is so out of proportions this trade always got longer because they couldn't make them any farther apart stop room much room to expand here there are some areas at the end of the race facts if you can expand a little bit but we would want to expand this exciting racetrack Geoff Bodine running in position he qualified third fastest with the speed so equal can you tell the difference between a fast and a slow lap in qualifying you can really tell the difference if you've got a good laugh airhorn Zilla the car sticks getting into the corner and turns in the middle then you can get into gas coming off you can really can feel that little bit of difference that you see in qualifying you can feel it from the steering wheel when again so Jeff bodean having a good race and he can only make up a lap and get back on the lead lap right away Ricky run is running right now it's tough for anybody to come by there are the number 27 cars the number 9 car and the number 7 machine Elliott and Rusty Wallace two lap down coming up on the inside to pass Richard Petty is the second place car I'm Alan Kulwicki here are two of the three principals in the Winston come battle right there on the track battling together Rusty Wallace and Bill Elliott it feeds like Jeff when I drop back just in the last several laps he was almost inside of these two are really right with Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace now he seems to be falling back peach is now coming on a street in the top of the screen Jeff bowtie may be having some kind of a problem the number nine Carvelli it's certainly showing some muscle as he has picked up two positions at the last few laps and now meanwhile it is still rusty rather a ricky rudd leading and he has lapped the number 11 car of Terry Labonte and so there are only four cars now on the lead lap let's see how Ricky passed Terry well as Terry Labonte's car went out a little bit coming off the turn - as we've seen to do so many times in Saturday's little bobble there Ricky Rudd moved on the inside of it and move right around now there are only four cars in the lead lap let's go down once again to the pit area Larry Hoover remains in the Ricky Rudd fence this is learning McReynolds crew chief on Ricky Rudd's car little earlier the brakes were soft yeah Thank You mr. about the brain okay behind another car we're smoking they're out of the air ducts he's okay with him which rap down lead to race you don't seem to be a big problem they complained about him in the last like this way that's possible believe ever posted any we don't we don't have a choice but you know to just try to run as hard as we can down the straightaway coast to the corner put as many of these cards down the left that we can again well Larry commented about was that Ricky is going to continue to try and put as many people on lap down as they possibly can remember this is the guy who was won twice here in the last five years and now he has led the last six short tracks in a row Ricky Rudd is tough on the short track so fights been about and Larry but he's losing a little bit of ground right now Alan wait has been coming up see some of that traffic not long ago he was about six and a half seconds behind Ricky Rudd he has cut that down to about four and a half seconds now so he has picked up two seconds but we do keep in mind that Ricky Rudd is perhaps not pushing his car as hard as he have and we also mentioned the fact that as long as he has a tap traffic ahead of him everything is okay for run because he hasn't doesn't have to use the brakes extensively but within the next few laps he will be approaching some of the slower cars and they have to employ a lot of braking feet while we watch Alan Kulwicki in second position they move around the number 67 car the buddy Eric the machine that's driven this weekend read by Brad T in France started way up front of the race but has dropped back and is not shown right now into the top 20 ricky rudd leaves the goodies 500s we're live from Martinsville Virginia Speedway back after these work we are under caution for the sixth time we ran quite a few laps there under green but now a yellow flag and Jerry punch is there to call the Alan Kulwicki style away a good pit stop under yellow for Alan Kulwicki but a possible problem is a radio communications problem they told me they are unable to hear us here in the pits in fact they have even commented maybe we could help out a little bit because we have written communication by way of our broadcast radio so maybe we may have to relay a few messages later on for the crew here well we ran into a similar situation a few years ago at Pocono during an IndyCar race and we will not be passing any messages along because that certainly taking advantage of a situation that not all competitors have here's the reason why we are under caution it occurred in turn number four as Jimmy means if Michael Waltrip got together then Michael Waltrip is stirring the fennel television today quite a bit not the way that he wanted to be running up front this is the third time that he's had a problem in spending around but this time he and Jimmy beans got together his fun Waltrip scar down to the inside and raised before the caution areas and fish getting some new tires on we saw a shot of Michael Waltrip going backwards for the second time today then coming to a stop along that yellow curve what do you think the penalty is for parking on a yellow curve like Mike walk through today I think the track officers come out give you a citation the hooker anyway Michael Waltrip has things fixed and now he goes back out on to the racetrack this is our sixth caution period of the afternoon and we're gonna take another break and be back with more of our five countries [Music] and we are back at Martinsville and we went green and then we went back yellow and through all of that Bill Elliott tried desperately to get his lap back and could another incident down in the third and fourth turns is what brought out this caution and here is Elliott's attempt to get back on the lead lap boy he really tried hard he tried on the inside then whipped to the outside but Ricky Rudd said look I got to keep your left hand you're too tough right now Davey Allison spun down to the third and fourth turns that's the reason for the caution he kept going however and all as well and you can see they're lining up for the restart now an interesting thing here we haven't talked about the slower cars line up well well they are so yeah they do but they lined up on the outside today the floor cards the cards that are one left out of four are starting on the inside but usually here in Clarksville they start on the outside because of the lower group is the faster booth you're watching the goodies 500 Winston Cup race on this Sunday afternoon and we're glad you could be with us and our live coverage today coming you to you from Martinsville Virginia Speedway just about to go back to the green flag Devon will be prying once more to get his lap back rut got the jump on it the last time we'll see if he gets able to this time I believe Ali will be a little more ready for it here together run once again with a good jump off the corner and or the moment and look at the contact there is Elliot's duds trick just a little bit but us to race is going on right here right up front you got the lap down cars of Phil Elliott Geoff Bodine and Rusty Wallace and then you got the lead lap cars of Ricky Rudd Darrell Waltrip and Alan Kulwicki darrell waltrip of the 17 car is second coy Alan quickly really getting shuffled back there in the car number 7 he was one of the fastest cars on the track before this caution but he got on the outside and Jeff faux diamond rescue Wallace both went 5 now they're in the body banging on his rear bumper the car number 7 afoul point is running in second place right now Darrell welcoming learn Darrell Waltrip in second - the ricky rudd myth where Larry Hoover has a report on tire wear Larry Moe Bob Ricky was one of several people have made uneventful pit stops back here Rick Wilson Benny Parsons Brett Bodine Mark Martin the only story is really where Ricky Rudd and Rick Wilson Rick Wilson started race on good years which the losers found them too slippery went back to good years take a look at Ricky Rudd tires you think this guy's been doing some racing there's some green paint we're not sure if it's a zone or Harry Ganz over there another multicolored rainbow others it's the bull of others car there with it baby Ken Schrader's I know there's not a slender you car in this race but well there's every color in the rainbow out here a multitude of colors now let's talk a bit about the backstretch pits Gary as I remember Bobby Allison always like to pit back there in fact at the end of the backstretch pit area well you're right Bob theory that Bobby had and I always thought it was the smartest thing to do here if you had the opportunity when the yellow flag comes out on the front straightaway if you're anywhere near to leave dive into those back straightaway pits get your services done while the other cars are having to run slow behind the pace car to come around so when you're getting your service these other cars are running slow you drop the jack you leave the pits from the back straightaway and you run fast again so you've really run a lot faster the total lap and anybody who's pitted on a front straightaway and you can creep you can gain the lead if you keep the lead or you can pick up positions just by pitting on the back straightaway and it works even better today since they're letting the pace car come out of the back the race for third and fourth position number seven kawaki and Sterling Marlin separating goes to the lab car is Terry Labonte in number 11 you know it's up to ask are a few years I think before they really realized what Bobby was doing every time he elected the pit on the back straightaway and so once once he pulled it pulled it several times they almost well they did they came up with a rule that said if you qualified on if you were in the top fifteen I believe it was at points and you qualified in the top fifteen you had to fit on a front straightaway so that took that option away from any of the front running cars and here is the pace car that is situated as you indicated on the backstretch and when it's called upon it enters the track in the turn number three but that's really even more like that said more of an advantage now because of the leaders know if they're fitted on a front straightaway they take the yellow flag here on the front stretch right here they take the yellow flag let's say they would come around and when they got just around the concern and headed down the back straightaway right along and here they got to be slowing down too because if they start gonna be in front of them while the guy that dumped it in those pits on the back red will have clear sailing the number two car of Ernie Irvan has been Black Flag by the way now here's our caution summary the first caution buried on the seventh lap maybe Allison with a spent on the 16th lap we problem here the main straightaways a car is really smoking badly that's Lake speed and this could possibly go through another caution period then we had to fail Jarrett and Morgan Shepherd accident the number 33 car and fluid engine in Pikeville Walter's fun on the 66 lap and he spun on 179 times so you can see that Michael Waltrip begin on time 275 and on 281 the 28 car so many of the cautions that have occurred this afternoon have been caused by the 30 car or the 28 car and their other culture now as Lake speed comes in let's take a look at it went down the front straightaway we'll see Lake speed in that pack of cars as you can see the smoke begins to bellow from that car as he goes down into turn one so Lake speed goes into the pit area as the pace car comes out of the pit area and picks up the field at the end of the backstretch there you can see the scoreboard showing 296 laughs completed and there is the field slowed down behind the Pontiac pace car well I think the early cautions in this race that set a precedent ricky rudd and all of these leaders aren't going into the pits they're staying out there that would have been a great advantage he of Ricky Rudd had made a pit stop because probably Phil Elliott and all of the lap down cars would have stayed out and not pit it there's the smoking car of Lake speed that is retired from competition in the we'll be back with more right after this [Music] ESP it's sweet world live at Martinsville Virginia Speedway for the goodies 500 feet brought to you by CX the antifreeze coolant for extreme conditions by Stan Lee work Stan Lee helps you to Vegas right and by Dickies they're America's favorite work clothes the geese on the pond behind us don't seem to be excited the way we are here on the racetrack itself we are under our a caution period of the day with just a little less than 300 laps completed you can see baby Allison moving out of the backstretch pits as the lead is continued to be held by Ricky Rudd [Music] a lot of unique things about Martinsville Virginia Speedway and one of those is located right down here in front of our broadcast position just coming off of turn number four here is a track fact track backs are brought to you by the Robert wash corporation makers of Bosch platinum the ultimate spark plug you're looking at one of the most scenic short tracks in American beautiful Martinsville Speedway located here in Martinsville Virginia this track was built nearly 41 years ago back in 1947 by the man that still operates it H clay Earl's and mr. Earle to the simple philosophy take care of the race fans and they'll take care of you he's been successful over the years now nearly a decade ago before people thought about handicapped parking spots at malls or shopping centers or even on buses or ramps mr. Earle taught about the handicapped race fan take a look at what he did he built this concrete pad here just out of turn four now the handicapped people can roll their chairs right up here within ten feet of the racing surface that sit right here and get a bird's-eye view of lap by lap competition here at Martinsville Speedway he also thought about how you would get him here easy and get them out well take a look you build a concrete ramp come right from the outside parking lot up the ramp watch the race and leave mr. Earle certainly a man way ahead of his time just one of the very unique aspects about this racetrack you can see that the handicapped area is not positioned not populated too much because of the weather conditions the field goes by the handicapped position out of turn number four and the battle is for the lead as Darrell Waltrip and Ricky Rudd are side by side and Waltrip wants to lead if you laughed and boy he's trying to do it the hard way by passione outside and right back on the inside well that's a tough way to do it pump 198 laps to go perhaps Waltrip said okay I'm going to lay back for the first 300 laps in the last 200 I'm going to go for it they are really grinded it out there for position that's called Wicky running side by side with Bill Elliott and Kulwicki is in third position Elliott remains a lap down has been a very difficult job for both Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace to get their laps back they have not been able to do so some fans have just joined us along the way they made green flag pit stops back about 140 250 lap mark and earlier so had several other cars and they just have nothing able to get that lap back where they've been struggling all all ever since then Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace and Jeff Boyd I have been struggling ever since then to try and get their lap back are pretty fast they've been able to keep breaking rod right in sight but they haven't had that little bit now Ruud may take the lead by about two car leaks over Darrell Waltrip and there now is Alan Kulwicki in third position so the first three now right together on the racetrack the other car in the leaf now let's go to Larry nuber in the pit area who can show us some of these cars are held together [Music] you can see all the yellow flags results of this race car you also see a lot of bungee cords holding the front end on problems with the bodywork they've had a vent Tyrod they've got some gaffers tape it's also holding the car together the problem right now is a [Music] desire [Music] gaffers tape and Michaels five matter of fact he just got in there ready to go back out we noticed that a while ago those bungee cords were holding up the front end of the race car you know Michael isn't one of those who was necessarily in a hot paddle as far as the points are concerned but they had the car just out there on the racetrack and showing up on national television a lot for the sponsor the country time lemonade and Michaels case terry labonte in the number 11 car working to the inside of the brain sex machine car number 88 and of course that would be for position that should be for the seventh position one lap down but you know we were talking earlier about how ricky rudd got out of sync and was able to put a lap on a lot of these more competitive I'm right hasn't been very successful at it so during that last caution Jeff bodean made a pit stop oil hose troubling almost fun out there Jeff Lodi made a pit stop that put him how to sing with just about everybody else on the throw some ways Jeff bowtie here we'll be able to take pre-stretch here if everybody makes their pen stops he could do the reverse of what has happened to of the reason that he got a lap down was because Ricky Rudd was out of sync now Jeff bodean data state that may play to his advantage well there was a close call for break sacks a couple of laps ago as he got the car completely sideways but saved it well here's Kenny Schrader in car number 25 coming down on the inside and they touched as they went into the turn and sacks were even getting in sideways that's rated dirt tracking it right he did save the car then he slide far enough to do any damage to the rear tires take care I don't think Greg sacks be supported too much of that they can't trade or hit that inside curve at the same time is right front tire was hitting up against Greg sacks car I think the guy who has the most chance of having an alignment problem from that would be Ken Schrader now Geoff Bodine is really moving up through the traffic remember he's still a lap down the 44 car is on the lean lap 20:11 are all a lap down to the lead Ricky Rudd and second place there is Darrell Waltrip as those two cars have now pulled away from the field and here those two cars that we saw a moment ago there's still going Eddie Kenny Schrader still trying to get around Greg sacks they banged together a couple more times go there are racing for position they're racing for the eighth the ninth position there at the moment Greg sacks holding down a position keeps writers tried to take it away the rotten eggs backed off in shredder in history has been trying awful hard I see him right up against a curve almost all morning thorough date so far from an area to get just a just a finger [Music] we've completed 316 laps once again we're watching Greg sacks and Ken traitor the 88 and 25 battle born still four cars in the lead lap Ricky resonator darrell waltrip second al-kuwaiti third fourth place in Sterling Marlin one lap down to fifth place in Phil Elliott moved up to sixth seventh place in Rusty Wallace 8mr Labine ninth in the garden Greg sacks and in place car [Music] baby elephant making an unscheduled fixed up and walk back out of the action very long and trying afternoon for for a problems still out there on the racetrack trying to I am as I can Frakes we have another one to take right now as we are live at Marcel Virginia Speedway we'll resume our coverage in just a moment it's lab 323 and we're under another caution at Martinsville this because of debris on the racetrack but it has brought nearly everyone in for a pit stop except Ricky Rudd now there goes from a Rusty Wallace out of the pit Sterling Marlin 217 of Waltrip Dale Earnhardt is out the 25 or Schrader Labonte and Jeff Bodine let's talk about strategy here with it's a good move by these guys boy it was a tough one Bill Elliott came into the pits before he actually took the yellow flag he got his four tires change oh well and quick he's having some kind of a problem they're jacking it up now I think you've got a look at that caught in the wheel yeah no II don't know lug nuts on the left front wheel they're tightening tightening it up now and he's gonna go a lap down oh man a tough break for Kulwicki they're not gonna let him go until they get all the lug nuts on that official he's pointing you got to put all five lug nuts on before you can go and that's the rule and he's really holding them up now and the pace car in the field has already passed so Kulwicki is indeed a lap down now after running way up there all afternoon I might as well change it's hired now that you've lost the lab to him you're in the pits with him with the nascar van Hoven they'll tell you that well up to me three cars on the lead lap now now Ricky Rudd if not Pitt and I guess the reason is he still got one more pit stop to make and he just can't go the rest of distance here let's go to Jerry punch in Alan Kulwicki finally frustratingly goes down pit road he was sitting here pounding the steering wheel I had his hand over his eyes he couldn't believe what was happening the car he started to move away because of miscommunication problems in fact we go over with Paul Andrews trying to find out what the problem was Paul what actually happened in that pit stop well here's a replay of Phil Elliott coming into the pits much sooner than everyone else just as the caution flag came out you can see how it just got away before the here's the face guard a front stretch Elliott almost went down a lap but that move will put him first on the restart see Elliott's on the inside he doesn't need to be there well then I take that back grin Ricky Rudd never made his pit stop that foot sail and Elliott on the inside that's right right he's right where he belongs new tires ricky rudd sitting there with old tires baby and get a flat back now sorry we apologize to Jerry punch there for interrupting him but we were about to go back there now what's wrong with sterling Marlins the green flag came out believe he's blue there's a lot of smoke from the car the racetrack a lot of smoke from that car number 44 words the green flag waves a starling ball and now gets it down into the pit - apparently he's now he's gone back up and look at this Elliott has a lap back and now Rusty Wallace is trying to do so and what we have seen here in the last few laps two of the four that were on the lead lap have really done themselves harm namely Sterling Marlin and Alan Kulwicki and of course these and Rusty Wallace we're running a lap down but with fresh tires since Ricky Rudd chose not to come here [Music] now surely Colin gets whatever he lost he goes back down couple laps down right before the fire extinguisher bottle went off it was probably it was either a fire extinguisher or maybe an electrical fire maybe they have some cooling fans that old fan the rear end cooler sometimes a wire short out and the installation won't melt it was one or the other because he's back up to speed now and now Rusty Wallace [Music] would love to see another caution come out not because of an accident certainly but debris on the racetrack would certainly be a good break for them right now because both of them have moved back onto the lead lap it makes you wonder about the strategy on Ricky Rudd's crew you know everybody pitted on that cars and they've gone a long time and Ricky Rudd had an opportunity on that last caution he stayed out there with the older tires compared to the nine in the 27 car they were able to get their laps back and look at this Darrell Waltrip is going for the lead he's got the inside line on Ricky Rudd down the backstretch they're side-by-side in a return number three I believe Wallace's brother uh Waltrip is going to grab the lead here for Ricky who has led the last several laps and indeed Darrell Waltrip leads the hoodies 500 his thinking Ricky Rudd's thank you was or the crew maybe one still had another pit stop to make so let's just stay out here but they perhaps didn't think that all anybody else coming in and taking on fresh tires and getting it back into lead lap so to spark let's go down to the fifth early part of his magnet that this Jerry punch affair the restart go the ignition box inside the car caught on fire he came down pit row with the car sputtering hubbas even ignition was burning they put the fire out he went back to the racetrack we read about 11 a.m. and the car number of wire break I've seen that before and what it really the thing you need to worry about the most right now is Sterling Marlin those fumes from that insulation burning will just if they're toxic they'll just knock you right out next car was full of that smoke so Sterling Marlin and it's got his lungs full of that kind of stuff I'm sure he's feeling some he was wishing for some fresh air right now [Music] let's go back a few laps ago and look at how Darrell Waltrip got the lead from Ricky Rudd when I came off the turn Ford got on the inside of Ricky Rudd and then mr. went into turn one where they are right now he's pulled up beside of him hit state even Wynton coming off the turn and then went on down the backstretch drove and just a little bit deeper not too much then Ricky Rudd but he's able to maintain that bottom groove and of course when he comes off the parent he gets the traction and thanks to me and so Waltrip now separates himself from Ricky Rudd by just a little bit he's the defending champion of this race do you in your mind that exciting when last year at Martinsville look at this myself to figure out what happened you know Jerry and I bumped a little going into three but really the whole deal started back here in turn to carry got outside a deal deal put him in the wall it's love them both down see I was able to get in under Terry Terry turned in from in position a dirty he shot intern art a Red Sea parted knocking through and that's the way it happened last year when Darryl Waltrip way to a victory again there is Walter found the back stretch on lap 39 [Music] ricky rudd and one guy who is not going his sixteenth race of his career here at Marksville is Richard Petty Larry is there there's Richard Petty's car I know many of you always wonder what's happening to Richard Petty well the cars been in the pits for about the last 15 min efficiency all-time leading winner here at Martinsville was 15 they have a host of problems in the rear of the car now Ned and Gary a comment about Ricky Rudd and why they didn't stop by talk with Larry McReynolds they felt that they could hold on to their position on a racetrack they wanted to keep as many cars one lap down as they possibly could but the strategy didn't work he did tell me they only have laughs on the currents tires they have on the car darrell waltrip but fit by the way Jeff Hammond make some good decisions and Jerry punches right there they've really been biding their time here in the time fit I was Jeff Hammond the crew chief or Darrell Walker and every pollution gonna bring a new racecar here may have made a different telephone ice in this car [Music] if everything holds together glad to keep working on my other program trying to get it big difference there isn't one sphere forces arrears near now back when Jericho dominating the receivers career here he was driving up with Angela Maggie you see what happens and you see what happens repeated Arawak up a bowl been an ongoing debate for the last probably seven eight years in Winston Cup racing front steer rear steer it seems to me over the last few years I've been keeping a pretty good eye on it the drivers when you give them a choice they almost always go for the front steer car but when you look at the record and you look at what's been happening Dale Earnhardt's been exclusively rear steer Bill Elliott has been exclusively rear steer and most of the other drivers have gone back and forth over the years so you almost have to say well here's the record on what rear steers have done here's a record on what front stairs have done let's toss a coin I think that's about what most of the teams have been doing these days Darrell Waltrip leads the Goody's 500 as we are now less than 150 laps from the conclusion of this race we'll resume our live coverage after these messages [Music] coming up next here on ESPN just down the road from Martinsville Virginia in Charlotte North Carolina the final round of the Senior PGA Tour the Invitational that will be live right after our coverage of this Winston Cup race here at Martinsville this person obviously has lost interest in the Winston Cup race and is awaiting a start of that called tripping just like she may be connected with the Rick Wilson team and Rick is not had a particularly good days she said wait wake me up when we take the lead the Black Plague we'll see if we can find out what the problem is car number 21 the cipro for DiPaola pity man he makes the entrance into the back hits where he is they really do not have an American right there he comes in dismissal looks like some smoke coming from in the pits or the Wood Brothers he won't be associated with that team tell us about Kyle Petty a 90 well you know we've had this research and development team over this this whole 1988 season under Rick Hendrick's the ownership now we've been talking with Kyle Paige and Charlotte businessman about taking over the team and going crazy nothing's signed yet we're still talking but things look pretty promising all right 9 he goes back out on the racetrack there by the way is Rick Wilson we talked about him a few minutes ago and seen cars at the number 27 car and they are back on the lead lap once again and fourth position and second place is the 26 car of Ricky Rudd and there is Darrell Waltrip the leader of the race so they're pretty comfortably back on the lead lap in there of course a second-place run it's gonna take some new tires for ricky rudd to get back into tension for the lead or darrell waltrip to have a problem ricky rudd is kind of faded over the performance we've seen earlier think you've got a you gotta admit his tires are much older and much more well used than anybody else is on the racetrack he's been doing a good job at their four offices our spin on that race card and down the point now we're just a 350 lat mark where he makes one more pissed off he can't go the rest of the way from come back in the right front so apparently he had a brake line broken or something wrong with the brakes over there there's a fan over in turn three it is sterling marlin and timppa shard spins in there as well to car number two you both are sitting near the outside wall out of the groove in turn number three but a yellow does come out on the racetrack end this is the break that Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace have been waiting for and Ricky Rudd Ricky Rudd needing a pit stop as well but as you say Darrell having rescue Wallace and Bill Elliott they got back in the lead lap a break for ricky rudd when you think about it is in terms of getting new tires and getting back in the lead but not really that good of a deal when you think that he's got two more contenders now into these last that he's going to have to race later on in the race sterling Bartlet's car still on the racetrack stalled so the pace car comes out and now we'll be seeing more pit stops made there's Rudd who's already in the pits getting those fresh tires pitted right ahead of him is mark mark that there is the leader of the race Darrell Waltrip coming in for a stop Jerry punch is there to call it for us Todd Chevrolet come down pit road they will make a four-tire change back again for Darrell Waltrip Darrell Waltrip in getting a nice cold drink pulled the microphone away of course Ricky Rudd's car coming out on the back myth already exiting in turn three left side tires going all the time Chevrolet Eddie Dickerson Jeff Hammond and reruns come by and take the lead while welcoming for tyre James he is down low well there's plastic example of hitting out the backstretch Ricky Rudd was running in second place and now he comes out in front I timed the difference Ricky Rudd in there Walter we're running together when they came into the pits Ricky pitted on the backstretch Darrell on the front Daryl pulled out of the pits six seconds later than after Ricky Rudd drove by the exit to the front straightaway pit road the 27 car of Wallace in the 9 car of Elliott both successfully complete their stops and moved back out on to the racetrack and so when the green comes out again we're going to see some exciting action as the goodies 500 continues live on ESPN drag racer Kenny Bernstein the owner of the Quaker State Buick team that ricky rudd is driving taking a few moments out to sign some autographs for his drag racing fans he has seen his driver Ricky Rudd in very good shape throughout the afternoon and now he is still up there in contention now let's summarize the pit stops for you that were just completed and indeed it was a very important round of stops Darrell Waltrip lost a position he was in first came out second Rudd exchange positions with Darrell Bill Elliott went in third and came out fourth and Rusty Wallace went in fourth and came out third but those four cars are and Dean on the lead lap now we go to the Ricky Rudd net where Larry nuber is standing by with chief Larry McReynolds well right now Bob Riley and Larry McReynolds are on the headsets talking to Ricky each time they go by here they stop as the engines wore by then they go back and talking to him soon as this sentence the conversation is they feel as though they're in a position now to witness race they have felt they've had potentially the best car all afternoon long they obviously were very disappointed when they let those leaders get by Larry what's the conversation right now even he's still talking to Ricky as you can tell right now what is the essence of what's going on between you and Ricky right now well wait it was kind of a close call while ago we we didn't feel like we'd run enough laps to actually pit because the car hadn't fell off on the watch but by rusty and Bill having stickers on they got their dead gun lamp back so it was a bad call on my part cause we hadn't done that and brother be honest and Daryl racing for the lead you know all the cars on the lead lap and I think we got run bail and rusty even though they're back on the lead lap but this yellow came at a good time we'll inside that 140 lap window so they definitely can go the distance on the tires we can't go the distance they're ok with the tires that are on the race car course the fuel is obviously no question they can run up 270 hundred 80 laps 364 laughs and the green flag comes back out at Martinsville Virginia Speedway here we go for hopefully the rest of the way without a clock we anticipate coming up here now Greg sex and car number 88 got back in the lead lap there when he's been run in the colonel [Music] darrell waltrip running in second place right behind the leader ricky rudd third is Bill Elliott though Rusty Wallace now has moved him to third and Bill Elliott has dropped back to fourth Elliott feet and trouble again up in turn for his mouthful Waltrip oil jam in car number 30s who Michael Waltrip into the outside wall once again at another caution flag over the Speedway and this is number 11 as Michael takes the shortcut now and cuts through the grass here comes the field racing back to the caution and brake sacks indeed will pick up a very significant advantage there yes he got back in the lead lap so you can't go all the way around here's a replay of what happens you can see in Michael Waltrip crossways and he comes them all in the third floor and he back to gently up into the wall boy when the traffic goes by he gets rolled back to album comes back around the pits Mike Michael Walters body man is gonna be very busy this we can get it ready for North Wilkesboro next week so the caution flag out again this is number 11 on the a boomer but the record number of cautions here is 17 we'll be right back [Music] back at Martinsville summer Hill bumpin and bangin going down there as we are back to green and Jeff Bodine and the 27 fire of Rusty Wallace in the 21 straighter racing very close together now the lead is being held right now by Ricky Rudd there he is in the Quaker say Buick the green car second position now however is Rusty Wallace rusty has moved up there to pack that crazy running home right now Helen the wicked laughs at that he lost ends appear so he tried to rail Ricky Rudd just in case another cost friendly hand gesture there by Rusty Wallace sickling ken schrader saying thank you kid for moving over and allowing me to pass without any problem so now it is Wallace in second position darrell waltrip in third it would appear as if [Music] giving a sportsman like Chester here allowing his teammate to a pass on the inside and that is exactly what is happening so Waltrip now goes to the inside let's see what happens though when there is a bit of a competitor back there that's Bill Elliott and it's not going to be so easy for Bill Darrell Walker [Music] Walter's running third and running his best place behind them well on the to falling behind Phil Elliott is the car number 88 of Creek Sachs who has done a marvelous job here this afternoon that fought his way back from being a laugh in the maitland here in the closing laps of this race we're going to be thinking about that the race and sabka wiki is sideways as he spoke to rent a little heavy to turn number three yeah he went in ahead of nose up beside a ricky rudd going in there and he think you might have hit the kerb going in there but he just went in there little too hard got her sideways we might've done some damage first car and this is a battle for position between the number 7 car the number five for wiki and Bo 9 ko9 saw just enough an opportunity when Co wiki got sideways there and here comes Jeff well it's time to go now these two cars being a lap down have got to go para ricky rudd you know he he's been fighting all day to try and stay in the lead that a few cars hit back the lead lap now he's got a really tell what he's got Rusty Wallace is a long ways back when you think about it you've got a lot of racetrack before he's gonna catch Ricky Rudd well won't be seen what everybody's got here in the next few laps here once again as a replay Cole Whitt almost losing in the third turn Crockett here he's coming off the second turn going down the battle the inside job very hard in there and he does hit that Kirby go on the inside and it jumps the car back up there and boy he did a great job in saving that car right now Ricky Rudd is turning the fastest laps of anyone that we have all day long he's running at about 20 170 earlier he's running about 20 to 25 of course it has [Music] know what she does now as I started to say Colicchio was losing control was going to be considering the driver of the race here in the closing laps of this event and the when the driver of the races awarded so dollars to the Winston Cup we'll be from a very good driver to a very good cause well there's a lot of candidates for that award today but really did a tough choice that's the way it has been the last few races you could promptly give it to five or six drivers who have not necessarily won the race but Oh really sure up for grabs I think he's betting on good jeopardize peanut run about a second or so while the divers coming up through the deals but he's a lap down but he's coming on running in second place threatens to become the sixth car now on the lead lap not too many laps ago we had four on the lead lap and of course Greg sacks got his lap back to make them for five and now Bodine is looking to do the same thing Kevin Allen 20 lost his lap into pits and Sterling Marlin had his problem momentarily we have two car that's right right then all of a sudden Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace got their land back then Greg sacks got his back about Jim food I'm trying to give his back and fo9 is really working over Ricky Rudd Jeff Jeff Luddites car normal normally runs black wheels it looks like he's borrowed wheels from somebody who rent silver wheels so they may have had to shuffle around and the bits and bytes of tires with a little better stagger on it looks like they had to go far oh let's see if he can get it back right here he's side by side with Rudd they come out of the fourth corner still a dead heat at the finish line into turn number bowtie is going to slip by Ricky Ron and Jeff but I gets his lap back we now have six cars on the lead lap man right behind the leader Ricky Rudd is the number seven car of cahuachi and he too were trying to be get back onto the lead lamb we're at Martinsville Virginia for the goodies 500 runs and Wallace Waltrip Elliott in Saks the first five Bodine koishi Schrader Labonte and Earnhardt six through 10 and 11 through 15 Ernie Irvan Mark Clark Brett Bodine they Parkinson's Bobby Hillin juniors [Music] the scenery is just gorgeous here in the Richmond of southern Martinsville Virginia area and Martinsville Speedway one of the most beautiful and well-maintained racing facilities in the United States they're running 500 laps here this afternoon and at the moment it is Darrell Waltrip who is rather Ricky Rudd who is leading this race in a Buick it's been a long time since if you like one Gracie going on all over the racetrack Rusty Wallace just a moment ago was alongside of Darrell Waltrip fighting it out Ricky Rudd got his hands full with Alan Kulwicki racing all around the racetrack and Bill Elliott has just been passed by Greg sacks Elliott had fallen back now XX has moved up into fourth and Elliott is driving with one hand we can see Vince it comes off the turn four in our position I don't know if he's holding he's holding on for the roll bar now whether there's some kind of a while or anything there that he's holding hope that he's having to do that or if he's just resting or what it is but he's definitely holding his right hand over always see if we can see him as he goes the end of the turn into Peters right hand is over there on that roll bar and on the there but every time for the last 15 or 20 laps keys come over there [Music] that's tough instructor I wonder if he's holding the car in gear it maybe it has his hand on the gearshift lever as if it were jumping out of here he has to hold it into gear either that or maybe his shoulder or arm has just bothered it now there you can clearly see that right hand is indeed off the steering wheel resting on in the roll bar or the gearshift and perhaps we can problem is from one of our pinned reporters but yeah Bill Elliott has to be getting tired and the arm has to be really tiring out they would see what power steering is is the only thing that's keeping him out there right now I'm sure and while we were watching Bill Elliott Alan Kulwicki moved around the car number 26 of Ricky Rudd and has gotten back in the beat laughs and here's how he did he makes that move again going into turn three it looks like who's that on the inside and the car sticks this time he didn't get the inside curving like he did before and is able to move around to Ricky Rudd push you right up into the car number 30 of Baca welcome and so now we have what six cars and muscle cars in the lead levels and our pit reporters have checked on the Bill Elliott situation that there apparently is nothing wrong bill is the battle for the lead as Darrell Waltrip has clawed Ricky Rudd and run it seems to be life is just not done no he's been complaining about brake problems since about the before the halfway point maybe that's it maybe he realized that his brakes aren't going to get any better unless he takes it easy on him that's the only hope he would have it at brake problem this long and still running this good he's got to be at least thinking about not using the brakes as hard as he did and early running closing in that's Brad Teague in the 67 car the panel that sweatshirt machine waltrip chasing blood down the front scratch with 300 one more lap we'll have 100 laps to go and that seems like a lot but boy you can click off very quickly on this [Music] though they're not quite making three laps per minute but it can't go away in a hurry oh yeah things happen so fast here at Martinsville especially now the were the last hundred laps that this is the end of the race this is where everybody it reaches down and pulls out just that little bit extra and that's what sometimes makes equipment give up makes it thanks for more problems for even more banging on the racetrack so it usually is the most interesting this last hundred laps let's run down the top ten for you now with 100 laps to go it's run Waltrip Wallace Greg sacks Bill on the lead lap in eighth this Ken Schrader Terry Labonte one lap down in tenth two laps down is the number three car of Dale Earnhardt let's go to Larry Hoover by the comment on that Ken Schrader run Bob Ned and Gary I just leaned over to Larry McReynolds and gave him a pizza paper I gave him some multiple-choice questions I said brakes tires horsepower stagger question marks he pointed immediately to stagger Ricky Watson quite as good as the last one he had he's hoping that lap traffic to win this race form because they're really concerned they can hold Darryl off with the set of tires they have on right now I said Ken Schrader's I meant Center ricky rudd straighter running in a but ricky rudd the leader on this race but the car just not quite the way he wasn't in there is the 27 car of Rusty Wallace now he has moved over through the traffic and the first three now are going to be right together Jerry punch is down in the Rusty Wallace pit no doubt what you all have had the fastest car here in Newton threat record he qualified but when he puts that card and lost the lab they were back in the packet of his squad to make it up back on the lead lap and they would like to see a yellow flag come out let's talk to Barry not to the crew chief Barry you guys would really like to see a yellow flag be able to come in and make a test you just put over gone [Applause] the yellow flag would come out they're gonna be the team to beat maybe they will be we'll see well he used to do it too bad right now he's catching Darryl Waltrip in 2nd 3rd 2nd position rather as the interval is less than a straight away there is Wallace going into turn number one now there are the emergent second-place car Merrill Walker it almost sounded from what Barry Dodson was saying it was that they were adjusting and adjusting I think are making it better and better and now they went too far so that's a good sign if they get another chance in defense they get back up just a little bit on that adjustment and Rusty Wallace is going to be a contender yeah I noticed them making that chassis adjustment during his last pit stop and wonder then if that was going to help the car or her and apparently in quite the way he wants it now coffee cup that again the wicked to contend with because both drivers after they passed Rudd have driven away from home so they are the fastest cars on the racetrack front where things change so fast the short track the slowest like I said earlier the slowest track we run on the circuit but think the way things happen here is just you know the scores have to be confused about half the time ricky rudd looking for his second win of the 1988 season he of course won on the road course at Watkins Glen New York earlier this year ESPN Speed World on this Sunday afternoon at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia for the goodies 500 bought to you by Budweiser proud sponsor of the 1988 US Olympic team this Bud's for you by Quaker State motor oil the May 2 stands for equality always has always will and by good care evil tires Goodyear because there really is a difference Michael Waltrip has come in for another pit stop they're changing tires on the right side looks like the right front is completely shredded away yeah I think he's probably the brakes are probably a overheating those right front tires blow up we see it here coming into turn three and he's on the ramp as you can see the sparks flying already does a good job of getting back to the boy michael waltrip what a day oh he deserves it at least the headache powder absence no the days at here I'm sure goodies the sponsor of this race would be glad to you packets full of good exciting power too with 200 IndyCar race and Nazareth Pennsylvania news over and Danny Sullivan has one man with and Mario Andretti in third battle also is a good one although Danny's settlement with that win looking pretty good the championship here this one it's a battle between Ricky run and darrell waltrip for the league Waltrip has been content for the last few laps to stay behind Ricky Rudd he made a significant move to catch Ricky but just biding his time it would appear for the neck we'll take if there are 418 circuits completed number 50 to carve chimi beams spoke scene coming from it yeah he's got a problem on the right front of that carve off for the last eight or ten laps have been smoke coming from will see him as he comes off the turn four and you'll see the smoke come from that car has become called the bad turn and for a long time earlier but what that is that is the break have gotten so hot on the right front of that car that it melted the whole ring that seals the brake fluid from leaking out into the brake caliper area the whole ring is gone he's got zero brakes right now I'm sure his brake pedals to the floor the only thing he can hope for is to let off the gas to slow down every time he touches Oh Ricky rut got a problem Oh rod is smoking badly just as he came off the fourth corner of a puff of smoke from that car and rod may be finished for the afternoon here comes Waltrip to take the lead and an unfortunate situation for Ricky Rudd boy broken mouse Craig never met broken bow the Ricky Rudd he's on seven cylinders now seven and losing 40 had a suffer situation Richmond Virginia a couple weeks ago and it looked like you had the race one and then blew an engine man they tell us he's under four cylinders boy that's that's tough is a very tough track on for our PMS in rpms are what caused valve related problems to happen to your agent so Raja sits simply drops down low on the racetrack and stays out of the racing groove and stays out of everybody's way after fighting so hard to maintain the lead and to get to where he was this afternoon just has to now find out the rest of the race here's a replay you can see the smoke coming from the race car just as he came off the four corner if you can say that smog start coming from [Music] we understand they had just been told to park it and he's dropped out of a hate racing with the engine failure before today's race so this would make nine those problems usually don't get better and Rudd was eleventh in points coming in so it doesn't mean a whole lot in there is a very dejected Kenny Bernstein of course has suffered many defeats on the racetrack himself and has suffered a defeat as a car owner here this afternoon [Music] Ricky Rudd has just pulled in you can see an awful lot of long faces Larry McReynolds reaches across I asked a couple of crew guys that they knew exactly what the problem was perhaps create the brake sign they said engine until ideas specifically what it is Gary guess is probably about as good as anybody's right now definitely felt terminals rookie in the car and they really were anticipating the black flag but other than engine problems at least at this moment maybe we can get a couple of details in a couple minutes here that's why you can tell about the problem engine failure so Britney run well not win the goodies 500 although he put on a very brilliant driving display in the first 425 laps of this race we'll try to get to him look at Darrell Waltrip who's caught in traffic Ernie Urban taking him away high on the racetrack and Waltrip had some real the NuvaRing to do to get out of that tight situation yeah he went into turn three Ernie Irvan was trying to move around Kyle paid him maybe three abreast there and that closed the gap Rusty Wallace was able to move up running about three and let's go back and look at it once again a lap ago here's what happened okay it goes in you see Ernie Irvan goes on the outside of Kyle Petty but Kyle stays down in there gets Ernie a little bit loose cross ways that Waltrip ends up on the outside and he knows that's not the place to be he just gets out of the gate that said wait a minute let me get this thing straightened out man here fusty polish then the clothes in and that is how close rusty is right now to be in the lead of this race Waltrip maintaining about a one and a half or two car lengths advantage Bob Rusty Wallace Larry numers with Ricky Rudd so quite this race rich men a couple weeks ago happen Laettner ice it's discouraging but what can you do you know we're gonna race next week this play course a Dukes been running out front but everywhere we've been we just got to get motors and stay together you know you can't win when you sit in a exactly what happened to the engine it broke a valve evidently you know we've been so worried about this murder most of these guys pulled a much much lower gear than we did that's one reason it doesn't make sense why we'd break a vow that's usually rpm related we didn't earn what about 8081 he's only got everybody I don't really know what breaking but we got to get us right now one thing for sure for four-fifths of the races the last month this has been the most outstanding competitor Ricky will have a chance to do it all again next week at North Wilkesboro and we'll be there the top 15 now with 430 laps completed 70 to go it's Waltrip Wallace sax Elliott and Bodine second 5co a key Schrader Labonte Earnhardt and urban to third by Mark Bodine marques Dylan jr. and grantees Jake is that Jarrett Gary Nelson cherry punch and Larry Nupur back at Martinsville Virginia Speedway for the closing stages of the goodies 500 with Darrell Waltrip in the time-machine number 17 leading this race second place belongs to Rusty Wallace has been a brilliant drive for Rusty Wallace the seventh and that's how far he is behind the 17 by Rick Wilson but rusty is certainly within striking distance there in the 27th oisin now behind the 27 car is the 88 car of Greg sacks he is third spot and having a good afternoon if he finishes third spot it would be his best finish since he won the firecracker 400 a couple of years back we saw when Darrell Walker trouble at the turn four laughing some cars a rusty wallace closed in on him and was only about a car length behind me but now Waltrip has been able to pull away from Rusty Wallace an event and walk back except for Darrell welcome Jeff had no power pulling away is the driver that Buddy Baker has tapped to run this car full-time in the 1989 season Waldrop trying to put another lap on very long and trying afternoon for tale right here's where they tangle last year on their last lap of this race Earnhardt's car showing a couple black a highest Ned both front and mice look like they've been knocked out of it and her push back that's got affected breakdowns on top of all the other problems in that with the agent missing early in the race point there they was hanging right in there and to keep they're all back by side again but now Phil Parsons pulling out in front of our heart there and that will give Walter maybe the roof that he needed that safety well [Music] as far as the officials are concerned they aren't hearted boots the racetrack he's given girl room to run out there because if the gay brothers fast out there and I don't think it's a great and through all of this rusty does not seem to be moving up at all as a matter of fact he's still about as far behind Waltrip as he was before this little race between Waltrip and Earnhardt began let's go back to 1987 this race a year ago it was Waltrip Labonte and Dale Earnhardt well if they went into turn three and Greg sacks comes into the pits my body buff darn hard a little bit Walter bumps on the body a little bit makes Labonte spin around Earnhardt goes high Waltrip sits down underneath it comes off turn four second second Darrell Waltrip won in 87 this year he is Lee late in the race in 1988 the five and seven cars are battling for position they have been for the last few laps and Jeff and Alan Kulwicki our clothes [Music] well when Greg sacks David but it's their moment go here and he has no brakes on that car because you put on back down and they're waiting for him to come back in but then Lou who tied up into fourth position and Alan Kulwicki at the bill for now well Jeff and Alan Kulwicki have really taken off when you think about it just a few laps ago ricky rudd was the leader at Jeff and now a quickie past ricky rudd to hit their last fact now and that gave their long-term belief guys are over I have a half a end up Darryl welcome racing for position right here but back in the lead lap head not too far behind Phil Elliott who is running in third place that they had to pass Bill Elliott get back get the lead left so they've got all the way around the racetrack they're only about side-by-side [Music] certainly are in for driver of the race that will announce a little bit later in our broadcast now Kulwicki has successfully passed Jeff bodean now Greg sacks as we mentioned came in for a pit stop let's check with Larry Hoover on that a great problem he was exactly right I talked with Buddy Baker they were very enthusiastic about ten laps ago I just came over on this side of the bed sir this absolutely right the brakes are almost gone there's enough there that we can race but we can't race hard much longer Larry's coming in Recife and desktops but the themes going to come out there and help me stop the car he has absolutely no brakes you see one of the thief helped him and he's still good get the car stopped have you gone back up he's going to have to try it again this time slow down a little bit more so Greg sacks has fallen victim to we've been talking about since an off with a green flag and that is brakes at Martinsville Frakes just enough any lasting over grunting at third place there at the beach two or three laps down and just completing down well he's really faced now he's lost so much time trying to stop an offense there's really nothing the crew can do to help your brakes but what the brake fluid is boiling there's nothing you can do it until they cooled off it stops boiling he tried to make a stop he just couldn't do it the only thing really the only way to stop it is a turn off the engine let out the question and shut the engine stopped he looked at me like he had carbon-neutral and I'm not sure I would want to run a single lap on margin at Marksville grace hearing comes miss once again to try to get stopped let's see if it's more successful this time Larry trying to get the guard stopped all the crews whether they get it stopped and by the way I've just been awarded the prw an elephant for their and it's gone too Joey Knuckles the crew chief on the card number 88 versus his race car sponsored by Red Baron but the TRW 1000 [Music] they've done an excellent job of course Gregg got a third place another great problem Bob so Greg sacks afternoon as far as they contender for the win is over let's review for you the top 10 now as we take another break we'll be right back for more of the goodies 500 [Music] coming up next here on ESPN from Charlotte North Carolina final round live coverage of the paint weber invitational the Senior PGA Tour's stay with us right after the conclusion of this race for the paint weber Invitational the concession stands are still quite busy here at Martinsville despite the fact for fully a few laps yes save me one budget thank you there's a leader Darrell Waltrip number 17 Rusty Wallace is remaining at second but I'll tell you they learn hard to question a Darrell are still running right together out there on the racetrack now Wallace is in second position but it's mating Bob is not running as fast as he was earlier in fact right now darrell waltrip out a handful left behind [Music] and Jerry punch has a story from the pit area while some of the tide crew began to come to life here and they're getting ready AM radio has been radioed by Darrell waters we may right front tire going down they have rolled two tires a third of the wall and they are getting ready for pit stops here in the hopefully they get a song just like maybe it will advance to bring him in right front tire while that was going on Alan Kulwicki has come all the way around the racetrack in his past Bill Elliott now his class Rusty Wallace in his movie in the second place he is literally flying around this room boy this last hundred laps I got to say it earlier this is the killer if it had been a 400 lap race Ritchie Ward red would have been a winner now we're what thirty six laps from the finish here's the new leader Darrell Waltrip starting to have problems rusty Wallace's car is definitely off the pace of what he was running earlier don't know what problem I'd beef and he is definitely off the pace while running in third position he had started to slow down a little bit they had a little bit of an encounter with Richard Petty over the second corner a lap or two ago that even further slow to this he finds lost a cylinder he's dropped to the inside of the racetrack and some cars that were that are laps down like Rick Wilson that Kenny Schrader are passing em five really decision time if a caution comes out now what do you do if you're Darrell well if these stay on the racetrack I think Darrell would be coming in Impa caution came out but then what about Alan Kulwicki in second place now the 27 car with problems in third place the five car now trying to take over a third place from Alan Kulwicki so Brown to Wallace forever after Wallace and Wallace comes into the pits rescue coming in to pitch if you haven't had a tire going down or something let's go to Jerry punch roughy had been getting slower and slower the car was slipping off the corner her rustic panel [Music] but he did go a lap down because he was about a half a lap behind Darrell Waltrip and while he was in the pits Walter Puente 25 so that did put him and the question is will Darryl have to make this top four tires at the next few laps at the moment he continues to leave on second place less the way on the left we got the clock on it right now Walter comes off there for Alan Kulwicki going into turn three he's nine and three-tenths seconds behind Alan Kulwicki is behind Darrell Waltrip right now and here comes to wiki just out of quarter number four now there is talent right there you stay alert hard for a judge about how Darrell Walters running he's kind of pulled away again from Earnhardt you know me you I was right back on Darryl's bumper pulled away a little bit so maybe Dale Darryl was just feeling something funny in the car they looked like the daryl really was slow coming all that and a matter it's breaks quite a bit when he was trying to laugh her heart back there he was really having to work and hearted that he wanted to but once he got around him now he's able to pull away a little bit maybe that price to build up lucky right now it is 8.7 at least a yeah well there's no question but he's been dating because he had darrell waltrip is one of the drivers he had to pass to get back in the lead lap with him was actually [Music] go around Walton as well so he's going all the way around the racetrack and come back through with the m2 low rate ii really don't the fastest car on the racetrack right now you know he's pulling away from Jeff bodean who's in third place pulling away from everybody he's on Laos himself and gaining on gentle walk before the lead now now the Kulwicki if not for those loose lug nuts earlier the cost of a la check it again 8.1 it was 8.4 laughs ago now it's 8.1 he's definitely gaining 27 laps to go it's kind of half there Billy step it up bill Hellion crossways coming off of turn four he just got left the last time around you can see him to demonstrate they're getting it straightened out he got left by Darrell Waltrip Elliott is still running in the fourth position but he hasn't been a factor since the green flag came out this last time he's been driving with one hand and a tough situation okay so last week when we saw the first three in points finished first second and third that's certainly not the way it's going to be here at Martinsville because the first three in points and all had some problems during the day Elliott Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace that there is rusty and Bill Elliott running together first and third in the Winston Cup points Massa that is for position I believe that that should put Rusty Wallace in the fourth position as he moved around bill elders alright Jerry punch can you update us on the darrell waltrip situation well Darrell had called in a few laps ago there may be a right front tire going down as we very difficult somewhat there with French tires against the pit wall but there with the cars hanging on they're gonna try to make their way to the finger Noli just a few more laps to go it's lap 477 in Bill Elliott is in the pits and it's for a change of right-side tires this would have to be I think an unscheduled pit stop he should have been able to go the rest of the distance but the really offensive implements hide melt the racetrack they figured the best thing you can do is get some fresh tires on that car before he spent route so we have seen both Bill Elliott and Rusty Wallace pit four tires here the last few laps well Darrell Waltrip a few will answer the question in just a moment [Music] we're 16 laps away from the finish of the goodies 500 coming up next here on ESPN the paint Weber Invitational seniors golf tournament live from Charlotte North Carolina there goes Rusty Wallace getting his lap back that he lost while he made that pit stop so rusty now goes back on the lead lap rusty is in force five in second position is Alan Kulwicki there he is and the interval what Ned about the same as it was or is he losing ground no he's the need for a few laps they got him some traffic there and he lost a little bit five six seconds of Silvan and we have awarded the driver of the race to Alan Kulwicki so $1,000 will be awarded from Goodyear Winston come Association in Allen Kovac ease name we chose him because of all the at first disease he has had overcome today okay he has ridden driven a whale of a race he got a lap down in the fence when they made a miscue in there with the looks master fought his way back and bearing down on barrel Walter for the wind hereafter being a lap down he is just left out dribbling everyone and now run everyone here for the last under level so yeah I really think Alan Kulwicki has driven one heck of a race you know the determination he must have to come back from the problem to death now he's within four seconds of the leader with 12 laps left in the race so he still could be a contender to win after all of the provinces head well Darrell Waltrip is in awful heavy cramping here and we saw a crowd and left Dale Earnhardt earlier on the car just not working after when you keep that on the inside he has no problems whatsoever very very heavy traffic the wiki is able to go inside outside wherever he wants to go so he is really picking up on him right now Darrell Waltrip in trouble with traffic there but there are only 11 four laps to go 489 have been completed Waltrip it looked like a little sideways coming off the second quarter he has a lot of race traffic ahead of him that's Greg sacks Mark Clark Terry Labonte Bill Elliott and Dave Marquez all ahead of him now the 88 car of sacks drops off the pace it goes to the inside of the racetrack remember he doesn't have any brakes Waltrip is having a terrible time moving Darrell's car family like he wants it he's got the lady he knows about many laps left he wants to protect it's the Alan Kulwicki oh by the way can see Darrell now now Ricky on the same straightaway there's Alan come into view so Alan can sit down Darryl but nine laps ago it's going to be tough Larry nuber has this comment on the Alan Kulwicki run this afternoon to chief I held up got a chance he pushed his lips together and shook his head and he leaned over and said you know quarter of a second faster than everybody else in the racetrack [Music] and Alan Kulwicki finishes second today will be the third time this year clearly in terms of woopsy Cup racing this is his most shining star Kulik he has never won the Winston Cup race he has come so close twice finishing in second position he was second at Darlington earlier this year and it appears as if he may have to settle for that runner-up position also today but the race still isn't over yet we've gotten a little less than seven laps to go some of that traffic to flutter weeded out in front of Darrell Waltrip even though Dale Earnhardt is prime mover around him right now but he got around there's a lot in the money didn't give you too much of a fight you can see Earnhardt in the black car there behind and Darrell Waltrip trying to move up on the outside of him I think wolterman just trying to conserve what he has right now just hoping that you know alert hearts been our gauge is part how strong Daryl officers spent the last 20 or 30 laps or so Daryl pulls away a little from her heart our hearts get ready to go back around Daryl so Darryl definitely has problems but his crew is telling them how far how much of a lead he has he must think that he can make it right now five laps to go less than five four and a half to go Waltrip in the third turn Alan Kulwicki now has closed it to two and three ten seconds but Monday that's a long way when to consider they're only four laps to go as Walter goes across the start/finish line Darryl sure seems to have a problem though I don't know I was just hit awful close Alan quick he's gonna be on his bumper in no time Darrell Waltrip looking for his 73rd career win his second of the year it might have a tire blistering or something I don't know while watching for what Breyers abrasive rubber that that came flying either from the car or from the track whichever but in any case Darrell Waltrip I think it's from racetrack rubber buildup oh and the corners here off this racetrack there's a slapstick EF this completes lap number 498 here comes Waltrip crossing the line there are two more laps ago and now Alan Kulwicki is really closing in he has only one car between himself and the leader Darrell Waltrip that is oh and he gets high coming out of turn number two call wiki slept and may have cost himself the shot at the win right there although I still don't think he would have been able to count he's got a problem he's definitely got a problem he's way high in turns three and four also maybe he's out of brakes Walter meanwhile has taken the white flag and he has less than a half mile now to go for his second win of the 1988 season the defending champion of this race is about to successfully defend his championship he won in Charlotte earlier this year in the world 600 and now here he comes off the fourth corner the hand is in the air Darrell Waltrip wins the goodies 500 here comes Alan Kulwicki of the fourth quarter and Allen finishes second but he is limping across the line and there's the happy tide crew [Music] he drove a very smart race bomb he ran a good solid smart race here today did what he had to do stayed out of trouble all day he got in some close quarters of time backed off Kip clean kept good brakes on the car and everything this reminds me of the Darrell Waltrip of old I remember doing so many races back in the mid-80s and 84 and so forth when you would watch Darrell Waltrip just bide his time just stay within striking distance but never really show his cards until he had to that's exactly the kind of race that Darrell Waltrip ran here this afternoon by golly he comes out with his second victory of 1998 the top ten finishers as we see them now we'll be back to talk with Darrell Waltrip in just a moment we're back in Martinsville Speedway in Martinsville Virginia the goodie 500 is history we're in victory lane this victory lane interview brought to you by Goodyear and riding the victory on Goodyear tires is Darrell Waltrip Darrell congratulations on a tremendous run today partner praise the Lord thank God for just a great day this car is fantastic I had a link missing in my chain and I'll pound it today and we're gonna be a hard dog to keep on the porch now everyone said that's the DW oh well back to the rear steer car and up front you got it buddy all day long I mean they dropped the green flag I told you pin them I've got you know hello coach in there I said we're racing today boys and we were hi mom and dad I don't want to faint good you're back golly good you come through today and I please darrell waltrip lids it here in the goodies 500 mega jerry unofficially bill elliott maintains his lead in Winston Cup points Rusty Wallace Bulls in the second day
