we have another crash and it's Charlie luck into the wall hard on the main straightaway and we have fire coming out from under that car obviously charlie is not in control of that car it looks as if he may get a stop before making contact with the outside wall but a hard shot for charlie luck in car number 45 and once again coming off of turn number four that's where the incident occurred charlie luckily is out of the car in signifying that he's okay they're letting his car went by about a hundred miles Wow hard hard flow but your luck when they built that fire and got out of the car very quickly there's a fire truck that's our fire truck now Charlie Walter go make sure he's okay yeah he may be able to shake it up here he's uh we have a replay of what happened up in turn number four here he is loosing control coming off of the fourth quarter there we see his tired so left front tires come off the automobile which made him lose control the mp9 retaining ball and when he did that he bent the steering suspension so he has no control whatsoever the Carl is home the court with that if the inside retaining wall and as we saw continued on during the turmoil we're sitting right now the heart is the chief on this car of charlie luck champion on this division and it's going to be a while before we can go back under green because they're going to have to get this battered car off of the racetrack so we'll resume our coverage from Darlington in a moment Souths 500 tomorrow in the hockey game tonight we have the Formula One race from Spain coming up tomorrow morning at ten o'clock Eastern Time here on ESPN now Ayrton Senna has qualified for the pole at over 115 miles an hour Nelson Piquet will be starting alongside Jackie Stewart and Larry Hoover we'll all have all the action for you tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock the Spanish Grand Prix here on ESPN we're at Darlington South Carolina this afternoon for a Grand National race and we have seen two accidents in the first 13 laps of this event Kenny Burke's losing control in quarter number four early and the most recent accident or Charlie Luck had an encounter with the inside retaining wall also off of corner number four and the fourth-quarter betting seems to be one of the areas in this racetrack to give the drivers of most problems it's going to give the drivers the most problems early on in the event once the race gets settled down in the end the leaders start catching some of the slower cars and lapping them I really think the turn 2 is going to be a problem because high on outside of turn 2 it's variously Jack arute has something for us from the fifth Jack yeah Benny they've removed charlie luck to the infield medical center for the mandatory checkup but one of the things that we wanted to bring the people up-to-date on is the fact that as you know the lemon tree medical telemetry hooked up to his body he's been working with Appalachian State University the human performance lab trying to develop a profile of what a race driver goes through as an athlete so he had the EKG and the respiration and everything all monitored inside the car and you can be sure come Monday morning when they look through that telemetry they're really going to have their hands full well now what about that Benny you've been in accidents before does your heart beat a little faster but you know you're going to hit the wall eye candy you know there's Tommy you sit back in trying to get to they're trying to put something that must be Plexiglas or something there put it over though and tape it on but when we have an action at a major Speedway such as Darlington Talladega and Daytona they do take you to the hospital and the first thing they check is the blood pressure and it's always much higher than it luckily Charlie Luck doesn't appear to be seriously injured although he had been taken to the hospital just for a routine examination we're still under caution here at Donington with 15 out of 147th laps completed the Dixie cup 200 back after this cleanup continues the Charlie accident however we have been given the indication that next time around we will resume with the race and go green again 16 laps have been completed the leader in this moment is Tim Richmond with Morgan Shepherd second Dale Earnhardt there darrell waltrip wet Bodine running in this position Dale Jarrett eighth is Rick mast pikas LD actor and Tempest when I came through grab word in Richmond three and a half mile for our advantage go to because I certainly can't see it there's we've seen no indication of it so far it's a matter of back Earnhardt has looked very strong here and so it's Morgan Shepherd who as you know has won the last two grand national races looking for Thanks begins to quicken now as Tim Richmond begins to accelerate coming out of corner number four Errol kinder looking them over and displayed the green flag we are back to racing Leigha grad Teague way down to the inside of the racetrack trying to gain his fine this made a green flag and that's the zone oh I don't know if what NASCAR's gonna say about Norman they don't like it well nevertheless gravity has moved into this spot now going around they're following Simran with the vaulting Rickford although rate speeds are a little bit 150 off of quarter number four get in through the turns extremely well but he's having problems going down the other car there was him alongside Morgan turn for mortgages relationships pot just going a deal you can have it ernhardt now and that's here Billy Dale Earnhardt here they come right on the back bumper of Hitler he wants to leave an artist isn't content to sit back and write in seconds but if he has a horse and go to the front he's going to take it there this is always an outstanding competitive race I remember two years ago it was one of the best races that I have ever seen in my life and last year's race was a good one also you'll recall that Harry get down the whistling cut broad area about an hour going to but back to your field likes going to hurt today 21 laps completed it's Tim Richmond and Taylor are battling for the top spot here in this red national race Brett Bodine and Dale Jarrett are also knows the tale out there on the racetrack at last lap Brett Bodine in double 0 tried to get alongside 75 Brad see the car directly in front of him there every back to the lead that's urn on has taken the lead from Tim Richmond Turner now has the lead you are so right that car handling well in the turns that has been the area of the track that Dale Earnhardt has looked as strong as he passed for second position in turns three and four and now he has taken the lead from Tim Richmond in turns three and four there he is down the backstretch the Ray way he was running just a moment ago I was afraid that Bernard got in front that he was gonna drive away from the peel I don't think rich was going to go anywhere he's opened up baby to car links between himself and Tim Richmond 210 not letting him get away their position is now adapt to seven or eight car lengths as Morgan Shepherd continues to run in that third spot but the race right now for the lead Dale Earnhardt and fifteen Richmond right on the buffers a good reach car Bernard well it's about two or three farthings on temperature every time - going through of course Benny will be behind a wheel tomorrow when we bring you live that France alpha this very racetrack and Benny who qualified third-fastest are your hopes up for tomorrow's race yes they are oh and we have smoke coming from Morgan shepherds guard he's spitting and turn number four turn number three that is Morgan Shepherd something went wrong with that car maybe on the wheel - that car that caused him to lose it to a has-been number three and now the car is on the inside the racetrack it looks like that's exactly what everybody bf did have an engine problem or you know water problem or some kind of liquid got under the wheels of the automobile and he was able to control it Darrell Waltrip is a guy that really did the job because if we can see him briefly I don't believe it or not but Darrell Waltrip was right behind Morgan Shepherd and was able to afford the moisture and was able to keep the car from spinning and was able to afford Morgan Shepherd while he was sliding around there so the streak in Grand National racing for Morgan Shepherd has definitely ended Morgan Shepherd will not win today's race here it is again Benny there he already has the car sideways he backed in the outside retaining wall and Darrell Waltrip gets behind that Dale Jarrett we can't see it in the fact that they'll Jarrett does spin Jarrett appeared to see the trouble in front of him and got on the brakes and did a half spin to the inside of the track but I believe that they'll continued on dropped out of this race but as for Morgan Shepherd the afternoon is over but I think it's okay people have worked or dried up and get out of the car right now yeah he's moving around yeah organs - getting out of the car here he comes Adam another replay of it there we see Dale Jarrett the other cars slowed down what happened the cars in front of Dale Jarrett slowed down so abruptly that he had to drive off the racetrack on the flat to miss those two cars there he was he he got in the order or spun he just they slowed down he had nowhere to go as a matter of fact I think it's pretty good job before those other two car absolutely Darrell Jarrett who started this race in six five in the Nationwide Auto Parts Pontiac and was running in tenth position when that incident occurred now there is the number 21 car of Larry Pearson going back out on to the racetrack after having made a pit stop and you know the amazing thing about in his pits the fellows calling the shots today is Jake elder the crew chief on Morgan Shepherd Winston Cup car I think Horace Jake right there they call it a suitcase and he's a packet and gone to this a friend national group with afraid we've gone down the road today and uh he was a crew chief for David Pearson many many years ago this path back to 1968 69 when Pearson won the Winston Cup championship JC elder was the crew chief there's Jack arute whoo yeah get in there and talk to those fellows these are two guys that you got a doctor when you see them together Jake what are you doing out here now don't start David I heard you talking to him and he's telling you already chose the wrong springs today now what's the story I really did say that we are he just it was meant to us for please Gordon didn't eat that but puts up the car was tired of course a date oh what a heartache went down 100 teens tired one day not to spoil her now so we just have a good time with him David you did have a close call though it was good that the caution did come out cause Larry's hood was coming apart well they know just a back boat come out of widget we're gonna run all day with that way with the in fact it might whatever their game he was hauling it when Lou so we went ahead and I drop it down what about David Pierce's driving career is it over are you finally retired Dave I don't think so because I have been running and I don't know in fact no of course I've been thinking about it here lately but really I believe a driver would never think about how old he is or if we would ever retire if it wasn't for the sports writers every time they woke up to you they say are you gonna retire or are you quitting or how much longer you're gonna drive then it gets on the drivers mind well am I really to old is that what it is but if it wasn't for them you never think about the run for years here well the thing that I understand Jake that you need to know is this guy bought himself a helicopter even he can help them set that up that's it for pit road guys well at least one vote from the broadcast booth for David Pearson not to retire he's not to old Binni and come on I'm all floored because he's tough competition David won't be in the race tomorrow but Benny will but a lot of good competition for you tomorrow in the race not the least of which Jeff behind will be : temperature every stars performing well here this weekend and wisdom we were looking over the starting lineup just a few moments ago Bob you start down the list of the started last morning said one in five really really have with the right I have no idea I just hope we keep a streak going that twelve different winners well racing I hope I'm the 12th guy green flag is back on the 29th 147 lampreys 200 miles here at Darlington and Dale Earnhardt is the leader and a car up against the wall in corner number one is Dale Jarrett he doesn't spin I believe we're gonna see a caution come out Jaron definitely but he got down to the there was their replay there he is on the outside it looks to me like the right front tire is flat and I would say I was speculate than when he got down on the apron a few moments ago one of the small pebbles of stone butchered the right front tire and he should have come in to pitch to change it but he didn't realize it was flat there was he a good shot of Dale Jarrett right now at his fits here along the Main Street the tire change is making his way to that area here is Jack you can see the right side sheetmetal is all better than orange the crew the nationwide scheme right side Goodyear tires put them on and many issues the right-front did go down and they're having a great deal of difficulty as he works up on the jack none the worse for wear strapped inside the car just a couple of more moments with the jackhammer trying to back away that sheet metal on the right front that's where the most damn and then he'll be back but at least several laps down there's a lot of talk about Dale Jarrett possibly taking over the Winston Cup ride that now belongs to Ron Bouchard he is uncertain at this time whether or not he will be stepping into that car now we go back to the racetrack and pick up the action and still they also moving up here and having fast darrell waltrip all the restart Brad take did the same thing to this just a moment ago he anticipated to start the races the race not a little bit better than Walter the third son there's a shofar in the way I'm 57 car Peterson has gotten between their water that's where Daryl severely now this lower car does move my other racetrack is nice gesture allowing the master power of Waltrip to go underneath the cars we've been watching nice I said Peterson that was hazard in the 57 car mr. parthiman between Brad Teague and Darrell Walker just a moment ago now seems to be pulling away from Tim Richmond and that's somewhat of a surprise because Tim qualified so well three and a half miles an hour faster than Dale but they'll all afternoon Benny with that car least appears to be faster the Thames he certainly appears to have the fascist star up there he is getting through the turns so well down the straightaway any better than any other cars but he is certainly getting through the turn 35 laps have been completed it is Dale Earnhardt Tim Richmond 20 and Darrell Waltrip we'll be back with more of our live coverage from Darlington the International Raceway Raceway in South Carolina for the things they come 200 there are the top five Dale Earnhardt Tim Richmond grantee Darrell Waltrip and Brett Bodine with 37 out of 147 laps completed in there are the leaders coming out of the fourth turn onto the straightaway slower car moving to the inside that's the number 71 car driven by Benny Curley what he gonna laugh on him ernhardt now moving away from Tim Richmond he's opened up even more racetrack between himself in Richmond Barnard is having so well that he's gonna be cross-traffic mom it's going to be the advantage of burner because he is getting to the turn so well they're all Waltrip is position here let's get out of the pest once again in Jack that crash with Dale Jarrett has been more costly than just left he's behind the wall as you can see and the tires in the front of the car is all knocked a kilter so they're going to have to adjust that and then put it back out on the race going on there was peak in car number 75 and they go lie on the track today in his first Super Speedway event now Darrell Waltrip is moving to the inside of Randy here on the main screen away let's see how they go into corner number one in Darrell Waltrip has the spine Darrel use that traffic just beautifully because a loss and car got Brad take slowed down a little bit Darrell Waltrip backed off alongside the 75 there's our look he's pastored inside outside doing a fine job the car there in front of him now kind of moves down and the fourth turn to block him but certainly in Barnard doing a fine job of going high and low to pass the slower traffic Christmas right close back up Bernard is not gonna try there's no point in gammon right now so he follows for cars to turn one plant in cars 0-7 the black 62 that they finally got around in quarter number one was driven by John Linville now Tim Richmond having some difficulty in working his way through this lower traffic and Earnhardt is fine shape as he is now going to the inside and passing Ronnie silver in car number 14 silver the car that are just went around the only regular Grand National primer who has won this year in this division these other winners have come from the regular Winston Cup competition right Morgan Shepherd out of the race already let's get out of the fifth what happened why did you have to go to the infield care center did you get knocked about inside the car no I was okay that NASCAR just always will everybody be checked under they've been an accident well the streak stops at 3 going to start it again next week yeah we're going to get back home track car was working well today we was just waiting for a pit stop to tap the car up a little bit and it's just one of those things sometimes you lose one as long as none get rained out I guess it's alright well Benny he is certainly one of the drivers that you have to consider as the favorite for tomorrow's race because he's going to be back in the car and then he wanted landing in the race he'll mark part of reporting hoping to have a great race and Tim Richmond looking to the inside of Dale Earnhardt they're going down the backstretch unable to move into the lead urn Ardis shouldered his way by I think it was boss Colo or somebody up and turn three hurt on his children his way by what these fellows is going through that traffic yes I think that Morgan Jeffords Turner Tamar has a great opportunity to win to win the Cup races in a row because he has JCL RJ Keller we saw missed a moment extended quiet but he is one of the best crew chiefs our is down there in the garage area then he had take a look at this racetrack community and there is Vera Walker that one the rear bumper of second running Tim Richmond the track is so wide but there is so very little of it that's actually used as the racing group well at 130 miles per hour he is a wide racetrack but these cars are running average 155 155 at that speed it's very very an area takes all the racetracks around that put a slow car there or another car around you you can run art has won twice this year on the grand national circuit he won the first two races of the year at Daytona and had Rocky last weekend at Bristol you recall he finished in second position so he's looking for his third win of the year and national competition here this afternoon Richmond now we go back and see that Brad Teague has fallen off the pace just a little bit because the double zero of Brett Bodine has passed e and now Bodine is in fourth he is in fifth the number two yellow and black car is driven by LD octor and then the red car is the number 69 Rick Wilson that we've met have mentioned a few moments ago having started 17 and is down rick wilson is driving in the wizard coven miss Tamar he's driving an Oldsmobile for the mcdeere brothers out of evidence purge Enya and he had to take a rookie that's how I knew he isn't this racetrack in looking's up to seven spot already appears to be dropping back just a little bit he challenged for second place for a while but then brought back to fourth and is continuing to fall back although he's staying up in this group of cars right behind cannot record on LD oxer and car number two is in six spot there he is LD a veteran he was a former champion of this woman's called late mom sportsman division I don't know back in the middle 70s I would think five n76 can Bartels me almost the spin off turn four lot of trail heoj of the fella we've talked about almost fun coming off turn four and Rick Wilson will take a look at it once again Betty looks like the Rick Wilson he might have gotten together of turn four and we see him starting to car go sideways until he does a good job controlling it they're to the inside that was right ahead of LD Angier is driven by Mike fun and Shelley is car number 19 we have a challenge for the lead as Tim Richmond showed some muscle and turn number one and recaptures first place he went my turn art with no trouble I don't know Jackie might kick with arts if he's got as far as Richmond certainly has made up a lot of ground and darrell waltrip right behind those two definitely closing in in third place here they are coming off in the fourth corner once again by the way those fourth turn third and fourth turn corners are banked at 20 degrees and the turns they are in right now turns one and two banked at 22 degrees there's Tim Richmond from Ashland Ohio who has recaptured the lead here there is Earnhardt who is running in second position and of course Darrell Waltrip is now Thurn Donnie Allison car number 23 also doing well back in the field to 8/5 now Walter right on the back bumper of Dale Earnhardt will see if these two go at it side-by-side here not this time they go into quarter number one it's single file but Waltrip certainly looks like he is on the verge of challenging for either second or perhaps even first he's passing good cars to get to third spot and he's been able to gain a mr. Phillips when they had a 15-car Lincoln Manny back on the back bumper Richmond and again it's in the corners that Dale appears to be doing so well that car handling very very fine in the corners right on the back bumper of Tim Richmond an even challenge for the lead in the turn but Richmond for the moment hangs on to that top spot the Levi's Garrett Pontiac leading the and Goodwrench pontiac there is Donnie Allison that we mentioned that red and white car run again an eight spot it's good to see Donnie Allison back in my yard good everybody so well Daytona earlier this year he was doing so well but has not competed in all the grand national races this year Donny house younger brother of Bobby ounces of white car right behind Donny is pal Betty seven of Richard Petty so we've got two famous families but what in nose-to-tail out and look at this Earnhardt just blowing around him Betty Oh an impressive impressive past there in turn number three Earnhardt hasn't been impressive all day long and that's the 21 car David Pearson there lap and one and oh man hurt our chests stood on the button and went by rich but like II was sitting still there for the moment although now ten is not letting Dale get away with anything Tim Richmond now beginning to fall back just a little bit and Earnhardt stretching out the lead as we have completed 56 out of 147 laps in the Dixie cup 200 for Carly any person to Jack arute back but has made a pit-stop and has lost a lap also as horace tom is kyle petty in car number 47 tough luck Tim Richmond in China virginity he led this race three times for a total of 24 laps and now Darrell Waltrip begins to challenge they learn hard for the lead has been the most impressive race car for the past 15 20 laps looks like he's running as well as anyone out there they learn our the leader there spot red white cars Darrell Walter the black car would stay in front Dale Earnhardt we'll try to get a report from Jack as though what's the problem when Tim Richmond brought the card they thought the engine had expired but it was still running and they there's something right here in the blue box in the ignition system as a distributor distributor cap possibly the wires themselves they're kind of lady right now bring him in behind the wall replacing all those items but they're hoping it may be a caution will come out they could do it under a luxury under yellow well that takes several minutes to replace that doesn't admitting so if he does come in under green it really is a fun continue on if you lose that many laughs while we watch they learn our darrell waltrip rusty of pushing the cow Betty Carlisle all field goes back in the garage a looks like it's over town doing double-duty here this weekend so are these two guys that are battling for the lead Bernard and Walter of course be in tomorrow's trance out 500 Winston Cup race that will have live for you at 1 o'clock here on ESPN at slave colony car 98 that Earnhardt is overtaking remember Larry last weekend involved with Jeff Bodine on the main straightaway at Bristol Larry came back this weekend though qualified 32nd position in that Nellie California our Carolina and A&W goals will be on but he's being laughter this afternoon man is not in the top ten on the inside of earn are going to turn one was not able to get by but Benny you asked me to check on Dale Earnhardt when we check with Kirk Schemmel dine and he says nothing wrong with her Becky's not my dick right now really stop if Jack he tried to take the lead going into turn three he was a long sigh during art Bernard closed the door on him Darrell was unable to get by but he had a run at me he's trying to be one more time down the front straightaway I think he's going to get him into turn one they're side by side Waldrop to the inside ernhardt outside and Earnhardt will model and Waltrip get the lead I'm glad to see that because at least I enjoyed can be done there is Tim Richmond has taken his car behind the wall and out of that racecar but the action is so good on the racetrack let's go back and keep a close watch on it the leaders are approaching some slower traffic it'll be interesting to see how they get change in position there's lots and lots of slow traffic for slower cars right direct in front of them earn are comes off the corner goes inside Shelly car Walter was not able to get by so Darryl's won't have to by those cars up in front of it on the inside for the fourth quarter Earnhardt is behind the blue car and again they go into the course now he speaks to the inside of the number 10 car driven by Kenny Bouchard here comes Waltrip right behind him and Bouchard got iron off the broad Walter would get alongside of it down the back Fred was not able to we can't even shard trying to save that left he don't want to go a lap down to the leaders but look there's nothing he can do about his turn or Drive high of turn three or four start is running in 14th position by the way so we now have 13 cars that are on the lead still has not gotten around Kenny Bouchard and lapped him see what happens here and then we'll go down to the pit area and check with Jack arute who has Tim Richmond now well we're here with Tim Richmond in early afternoon to me one foot out we're not really sure Jackie something into motor started to lose power like it started drop a bow or something we didn't feel like staying out there and maybe boarding the bearing down kicking arrived Evelyn losing a race bar Anna motors to pick one right now Walter Bernhard we win the race you know he trying to stay with inside of it he's got the chance to working real good in reading for he's a little bit off and wanted to but right we're gonna have a caution but we did not now Waltrip goes inside and again they go into first quarter side-by-side no he knows what to expect this time but Bernard is able to do it on the outside one more time Bob we thought we were going to have a yell because Rick sadly in quarter number three he got the car to the inside of the racetrack in is in his pit on the fact is going to be out of the rain in believe me it was a coupla anxious seconds for Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Walter because he flew right directly in front of the leaders urn Arnett Walker good know is the tail competition here in this Grand National race at Darlington International Raceway as they learn hard incarnate boudin continues to run third than Brad Teague running in fifth position as hell driven by Donnie Allison in eighth position is spot is the number 11 carjacking Robert will be seeing pissed off in just a few minutes what's the strategy on the pitstop he's going and not and trying to get in the lead in their long history take the lead he probably would have a little bit handle a little bit better when he gets on the racetrack see what kind of strategy we're going to see when they start bugging the kids wouldn't it be pretty soon you know halfway right now 100 left that's right we the race now Benny what rule as weekend here at Darlington they can change two tires Walter pride again he got alongside earn are down the backs right away we have had three caution periods in this race one for Kenny mercs who slammed the law in the very first turn Charlie lucky had a hard encounter with the coming up a quarter number floor and stand in which Morgan Shepherd lost control down in quarter number three let's go down to the pits once again summertime Kirk when you come in for fuel do you take on tires or do you just do a gas and go well there's the answer to your question and we've got to spin out of the track Russian and it says barrier in car number 16 and this will cause the pit stops this is a break for Earnhardt and Walter because they were needing to make a pit stop change those tires now they're gonna be able to do it on the caution flag not lose any time that some of the cars are running behind them and barrier still is on the racetrack start/finish line here on the main straightaway we have hits on both the front stretch and the back stretch here at Darlington n has been apparently on the back stretch he's going to try to make it over there about the same area of the racetrack does Morgan Shepherd had his problem now here come the leaders into the pits Dale Earnhardt followed by Darrell Waltrip we'll see who gets in and out first L Earnhardt comes in first locks it up as does Darrell Waltrip they earn our group goes to work on the right side outside tires being exchanged also on Darrell Waltrip machine both cars taking in 22 down is raising the spoiler at the they're banging it back up that means he's the first one down in a way meanwhile they're adjusting on the wedge bolt at the left side of darrell waltrip scar so he's being kept in the pistol completed yet much longer stop by sterile but he really didn't lose that and stops have it made we're still going to yellow for a couple more laps to make sure the race tracker is free of any oil then we'll resume this battle between Earnhardt and Waltrip and Darlington International Raceway if you could join us today for the Dixie cup 200 grand national race from Darlington International Raceway that's being brought to you by mr. Goodwrench no one knows your GM car better than mr. Goodrich no one we are just past the halfway point and we are yellow and this is the reason Benny Parsons and barrier the cars been smoking all day long this time it looks like he had a little more serious problem something broke inside the engine the moisture got none of the wheels he's fun going in turn three and the caution flag was a good break for several cars joke Thurman Tommy Huston and Jackie Amanda skull Bennett almost laughing now they're able to come back to ride on the back bumper later a green bike they charge in the corner number one Ray's in second spot now is Waltrip third healthy younger more Waldrop still challenging for the lead both drivers asked for adjustments on their a little loose out there period inside that racecar and making some adjustments yes the quarter-final women we see in the rear quarter of these automobiles before reach inside the car and change the chassis as they used to now they have to literally crawl of the driver's compartment now it's going to be interesting to see if either car was improved and we have a car spinning Kenny Bouchard looses it on floor he hits the wall to the inside and just about the same spot that Charlie LOC had problems earlier in the race and he for sure this time causes a yellow flag Proctor's very much damage to the mother mommy a little bit of excessive damage as a rider ear but the run right front beam around with his knee damage to the car but I guess the toe-in has probably knocked out I'm told that that the thing is told in pretty badly he's meant to come in and make some pretty extensive adjustments to the car you know there's so much apron here that you really are able to scrub off a little bit of speed when you lose it up there before you actually make contact with the wall there was a Rick Wilson trying to pass the Kitty Bouchard car they got together touched the shard spins the car it's the inside retaining wall with the rear the front comes around snaps it and that's when he knocked the front suspension out of kilter so Kenny Bouchard a regular modified driver is in the pits and they're trying to see if that car can be salvaged and got back out there on the racetrack for more action as you can see with the hood up in the car that car is from Massachusetts long place of Azima Buick is that what it says I think it says on the hood of the car they're running quite a few that fella this year they're gonna run quite a few at best was getting to be shard down in the southeast and the grand national division this is our fifth caution period of the afternoon several cars have dropped out of competition here this afternoon and we have seen at least two cars drop out because of accidents as Waltrip comes in for another pit stop Kenny Charlie Luck and Morgan Shepherd all involved in accidents and you can see the other drivers and there we see Jack Ingram in the pens and Darrell Waltrip both cars changes left-side tires and that's Jack arute has it down in the pits and Benny that was a break because now these guys have got literally four new Goodyear tires on they change the right size just what now that the left sides out despite the NASCAR rule they've taken on corners and they learn art meanwhile stay on the racetrack easily in the event but he only have to do right and the tires aren't worn out worn out on these automobiles certainly they don't wear out in the hundred miles but new tires just have certain adhesion characteristic characteristics it's about them makes a race car feels so much better relatively got into a huddle with his crew to say maybe we ought to come in first I'm going to see if I can get a word with him right now Kurt Waltrip's taking on four tires and you've only got two on the right side why didn't you bring them in the stars raised pretty good right there so we well there you have it a gamble one side of the leaf duo decided to come in for for this yeah but if the car feels okay as Dale says it is why my father with it right why bother that's exactly right and the entire advantage will probably go away in about five laps and it's probably going to take Darrell Waltrip at least five laps to pass the cars that he's going to have to pass to get back up behind her and on I mean he's got to go bye Tommy Houston Brad Teague Donnie Allison the rick wilson automobile Davey Allison Brett Bodine LD on sir he'll there's lots of good cars between heat and the Dale Earnhardt all on the bill I think you've probably got a better race car with four tires but the advantage will be used up the time he gets there onto the racetrack in 95 the track on the apron pulling into the pits and here we go again with a resumption off the Dixie cup 200 the green flag displayed once again 85 out of 147 laps have been completed through the traffic or Willie for Dale Earnhardt can run away with things now there's the field moving through the first and second quarters everybody gets through in good shape LD on turn now right sure appears to be challenging for the lead he looked inside and couldn't get the job done as always Bernard just pulls away and their watery still behind Tommy Houston doesn't appear to be moving up at all he's on the inside now if Tommy Houston and Tommy but it's gonna be position 30 goes by the mic he cries - he's not able to get my washer and he has moved up to an eight spot now a lot of racetrack between them getting too in second place as the number double zero are driven by has moved around Aldi 'enter there is the interval it's an entire back stretch interval between Waltrip and Dale Earnhardt so a lot of racetrack to cover before he can get up there once again there how dine swing off the fourth corner getting way online they got a little bit close to that wall Oh dine now in second and running in poor spot and doing a fine job out there is insane the racetrack get skinny Bouchard they made some comparisons back second in third position behind an elk launcher you can see it's very obvious there Benny there's a pump down that quarter that bump is going to affect him more than who has now open up about a 10 to 15 car length advantage over nine and there's a good look at threatening of their Brotherhood now Archer and Allison looking to the inside of oh nine file formation going into corner number one exciting brand national bracelet Raceway in South Carolina come back for more in just a moment LinkedIn International Raceway for that things they come 200 grand national race and that interval that Darryl our dad open app has completely diminished betting and Brett Bodine now is looking strong and right behind him elevator I really don't understand what happened hurt are the what are the advantages of right now is down to three or four car legs he is destined to begin like he was a few moments a couple of times last week at Bristol is certainly in a much better performance here this afternoon on the high banks of Darlington back there maybe house was alongside the aldehyde run we'll go and turn four but was unable to get by maybe Allison looking very strong here in this race the average speed by the way 120 two point three two zero miles an hour periods and now bowtie goes for the lead and gets it into turn number three find out what it is red photon has the lead and the car you see in the very back of the picture right there oh here comes our hardback Earnhardt once again nearly alongside Bodine in the second quarter now we'll see what happens as they come out of the backstretch and look who has come that is Darrell Waltrip he's in six-five for the lien is getting it once again the fourth quarter now Davey Allison boosts to the inside and looks for third for therapy he was fairly easy for Daryl Walton to get there but how he's going to get by it's gonna be very tough for him to get by good race cars in front of him right now all right many now how much cramping are they doing out there those cars are breaking lots of wind and a lot of traffic down these thread ways there was lately alter on the outside of the brickwork nautical bill trying to take that spot away going for 50 R they come down the straightaway and they're side by side Trump cannot get this but now he does going ready you were talking to speculate maybe there was a problem there's really nothing wrong with dales just everybody else got a little bastard well thank you very much Jack arute over friend behind really gotta wonder if her heart just maybe laid back and said okay see what you got and then go back handily Hilfiger in arts built that way I think he's gonna lead every lap he possibly do now right behind the fourth quarter once again and he's trying that Navy down the front-runner he's going to get by gonna try Ricki Lake and Darryl does Darrell Walker ahead of him as LD after butyne and of course our leader Dale Earnhardt right up on the back bumper now of LD I'm sure in that number two both cars go wide in quarter number three they'll be running a very high line off the rear court just like Brembo nine Voyager 1 on the racetrack great racing and for the third year in a row the Texan 200 grand national believably exciting race Roger let's carve up there I was gonna try to get a long shot up and in turn four it began Roger letting that car slide hi in the third turn but darrell waltrip was the situation there Grinnell we have Rick Wilson challenging Davey Allison behind the group but the positions hold now waltrip once again he's got a shot he's alongside going down the back brings along three he gets it Waltrip has moved to third and is charging toward the front is the car that he now sets his sights on in second spot I'm here in the pits was that he chose the crew chief for Darrell Waltrip Shane Eddie you took more tires raise we're just ride with whereas we can race they own the tires we got them right now making way through and get the where you can rival day on the bracelet where they end up when you say ride with Dale was that the strategy wait for the last why this racetrack is I don't think he wasn't white just like I'm down here the Budweiser food gentlemen and waltrip is challenging for a second and hand see into the back stretch he gets it from behind Waltrip has moved into second position and now Dale Earnhardt leads this race by maybe 20 car lengths but I have a feeling penny that that interval is going to close up quickly I think you're exactly right I think Darrell Waltrip is going to be able to catch the Earnhardt out a little bit we're going to see a great race and there is the leader off the second turn and there is second place darrell waltrip that's how close they are we'll be back with more live coverage from Darlington at the Dixie cup 200 after new leader in the Dixie cup 200 Darryl Waltrip has passed Dale Earnhardt and Waltrip is the leader that was a nice move just-just there was nothing he could do what was her best he can do but I tell you one thing he Stewart tried his best to give that lead back during our number two has brought back in the past and this is why while we were away this is what happened he goes on the outside of baby Houston turn three and it's tough to go through there two abreast as LD Ottinger found out we saw Bernard and Walter do that early on in the race but it's very tough to do and they'll be on to realize them right now look three cars got fine yeah he's back to seventh position now LD you know they good luck today and here they are the leader is darrell waltrip second Dale Earnhardt Brett Bodine and Davey Allison Rick Wilson Brett Teague Tommy Houston Donnie Allison and Jack Ingram those ten cars are on the lead lap and there are the leaders and you can see that Waltrip now with about a five or six car Lincoln venting 111th laps of 147th have been completed I was walk but he changed those four tires and when he got there all that traffic be used up it looks like I was worrying for nothing because his car certainly wasn't used up when he got by he was able to pass her in art and darrel certainly the strongest car on the racetrack at this point and Dale Earnhardt has to be concerned with his tires and the weight of the car as well as it had in the pan in the early stages of this race there's the number 63 and Jimmy or a pit-stop hensley of course used to drive the double zero car that brett bodine now handles but and there is Jack Ingram or Carolina the defending champion of the Grand National Division and the driver who was credited with winning this race last year although he did receive some help from Harry Gant in the victory there we see Jack trying to get by Bosco Lo and me I don't talk to that other car that's randomly joined the car right behind Jackie the leaders once again setting the car into turn number three look at the interval he has opened up all of a sudden on Dale Earnhardt was like intervals about 15-20 Garlington I'm sure they're old it's not trying to stretch down any more than and he has to here's the race for third spot it is a great race involve the Miller America right ahead of him the double zero car of Brett Bodine or third spot in turn number two race fans remember the car used to be driven by sambar the topic for this country I'm out of Asheville North Carolina here's a fine run this afternoon by Davey Allison or third an interesting situation last weekend at Bristol and along with that the SPN and NASCAR preset attract back stock car racing fuel consumption can make the difference between finishing first and maybe sixth or seventh so how do drivers find out just how much gas they're consuming well they pull up to the gas pump with their 11 gallon dump cans and fill them up and as they're done their crew members are given a little sheet of paper that tells them exactly how much fuel went into the cans they take that back to the team they calculate their fuel consumption and decide how many more laps they can go before the next pit stop we have a yellow flag here at Darlington because of Mike Botticelli who has scraped the wall and come to a stop in turn number two so this could very well cause another round of pit stops and could cause a very serious complication for many many drivers we'll come back to see how it all comes out in just a moment Winston Cup rate in the broadcast booth today Betty Parsons has third quickest qualifying speed and will start from inside row number two in that race and we hope you will join us for the trance out 500 here you can see the baseball games in our around the nation this afternoon the Phillies leading the New York Mets four to two in the fifth inning and the other baseball scores from around the nation this afternoon that you will be caught up on once more later this afternoon and 6:30 Eastern Time we're yellow here at Darlington because of an incident involving Mike Botticelli in the car is still up against the wall that he is receiving some attention from the track crew so we are under yellow Dale Earnhardt has made a pit stop but Darrell Waltrip has not it could mean some great racing and we'll find out about that when we return that's seven o'clock tonight here on ESPN the track crew just now returning to its station after having cleaned up the incident over in turn number two Mike Botticelli scraping the wall but he's going to be able to continue let's talk about their Rick Wilson little bit in car number 69 Rick has had a strong performance here this afternoon he is a Winston Cup driver that will be going in tomorrow's race his best finish in Winston Cup competition this year is seven at Daytona he's from Bartow Florida well you see that map lakotas on the car that's a wrestler done in Daytona Beach Roy Yates the owner the restaurant I saw him down earlier he's here to watch his car Rudy's car on route Luke Wilson don't suppose today and tomorrow well now we saw some interesting pit stops during this most recent yellow flag situation jack update us on exactly what happened however stayed out first Justice Stan what 26 27 laps to go I talked to Eddie Jones and Eddie said well Daryl says the cars running very well and they waited until Earnhardt came in Eddie radioed to what Darrell what Earnhardt had done Darrell radioed back to the decision and said I'm staying out in the same situation out there why would you be more comfortable with Darryl's setup or Dale's well you know while ago I thought that Darrell Waltrip has a disadvantage because he had to start behind so many good race cars Dale Earnhardt has the same problem although Darrell Waltrip had what was it eight or nine that he had to pass yeah Earnhardt only has to pass three three nine so turn rush job is a little bit easier but I don't know I think maybe Waltrip may be just as tough as Earnhardt it's gonna be break sighs the last 26 left I tell you that this will complete lap 122 and the race is 147 laps we are back to green let's see what happens here grandpa died a second wrinkles and Thursday day-old birthmark behind and LD taani with a very poor start there is dropping back on the backstretch he got up there and I just had to back off the there's great away once again there were two prior to the end that has dropped off the face the other is Haskell Willingham in car number 19 LD actor all afternoon is having trouble Diaz on the apron of the racetrack in turn number two there is the leader though darrell waltrip still setting the pace the interval between first second third there's fourth place and that is Dale Earnhardt our CEO he's used up everything he has right now it gets better walking you know he has about 30 miles the stock car race thirty seconds in length it is a long time at all there is Waltrip in the quarter number three Eldee doctor is coming in for a pit stop and that car appears to have serious problems perhaps a tire has gone down but they don't appear to be in any hurry to the right side and begin to something more serious than that metal damage on the right side of the article tired just a little bit some of the spoilers around the racetrack thinks he might have sprained the outside retaining wall up and turns three and four as he did earlier on in the broadcast well it would certainly seem that way because there is a body man that you can see the cool has brought out the hammers tried to found that sheet metal back the tire well Earnhardt is definitely on the movement he's up to third spotting closing in they still force know he is going or that's right he's closing in on third Rick Wilson then find the Rick Wilson friend behind her heartin goes by he will help one of the cars like he'll help Wilson get by here they are in the fourth corner ernhardt moving alongside and Rick Olson filling that car up way high almost raping the ball putting a Darlington stripe on it for half I should know at the end of the day straight away Earnhardt has now moved to third there is boat on you between first and second here goes right now can he do it Benny he probably candidate because he's running very well in Bernhardt having to pick is I mean Darrell walked right now had to pick his way around slow cars he passed the slow carbon turn for them back again dramatically he probably lost one second on level to give pilots lower car normally you would go to the high side to pass the slower car on the straightaway but Daryl had to dive to the inside car which was the number zero seven car the Dale Earnhardt could do it I really don't unless we have another yellow and unless things change dramatically as long as we stay under green I don't think that her heart can catch their Walter ball though he has moved around Brett Bodine on the inside and taken over a second he made that pass off bo9 of a turns red for them very easily he has nothing in front of him right now except there it's about 30 40 car lengths in front of it we're going to see right now who has the better racer there are walking we will try to keep tabs on that interval to see if indeed Earnhardt is closing in there he is Earnhardt in second position now with Waltrip coming off the fourth quarter in the lead he completes 130 laps we have a 17 to go in the Dixie cup 200 and Rick Wilson staying close together out there on the racetrack contesting third spot but our interest right now and whether he can close the gap on Daryl Walter down to the pit area here's Jack arute with an interesting guest well this fellas been watching the fortunes rise and for all his brother Brett this is what upstart they don't a 500 champion Jeff Medina covering as if fred has really learned how to get around the track but he couldn't hold off Bernhard Wow Sam came in and changed left side tires stay out we could have come in but he said he wanted to stay out he felt he had a better chance to do that yeah Dale came up now he's the first Grand National driver in line behind those two Winston Cup drivers he's run a really good race the cars the little tighter wants approachable we would have liked to come in and made an adjustment when he elected to stay out well Jeffrey says his brother Brett's versed in flat berries is a feather in his cap to perform so well on this racetrack Brett Bodine the interval between first and second is not shortening it is growing it was three point zero one seconds two laps ago was three point five now it's up to three point nine seconds so Darrell Waltrip is extending his lead over Dale Earnhardt I'm sure that was an anxious moment as he went by the kidney Bouchard automobile when you pass those cars on the inside going in these turns you really never know if they realize you're there or not unexpected realize you there come down this time Kenneth Bouchard knew he was their game otsuru this make him down to a better race for second third and fourth position if Walter can continue to hold on his lead right here because as you can see it's about a half a straightaway advantage for Waldron this is something red bow dine and written girl my god they are staying right there with him although now because of the Kenny Bouchard car the slower car mark does red bowtie or as a leader Walter right here will be Dale Earnhardt that's the interval between the two is now about four seconds so we will continue with four 200 right after these messages or sixth seventh and eighth spot in sixth position right now is Brad Teague in car number 75 Jack has lost a couple positions in the last lap the last lap he was six foot drag Brad Teague past him between three or four and Tommy has led to get five down and running right ahead of Brad see that blue car is baby Alison at number 90 by concerns what appears to be darrell waltrip race at this point as we take a look there with navy allison it appears to be a darrell waltrip raced at this point because about a four or even four and a half second lead over Taylor are there is Daryl coming down the straightaway if there is Earnhardt behind her and heart of course their place and fourth place Rick Wilson but I can't betting I don't think the dealers are be able to you know there's Darryl wife's TV Walter they're walkin with four and a half miles an hour slower than Tim Richmond has been running up front all day long when we went into this NASCAR Grand National race Jackie ruined the points leader was 733 and branti was eighty-three and Tommy Houston was third in the points was 680 and you saw just a few minutes ago how those drivers were battling for position out there 5th 6th 7th and 8th and so the points are going to tighten up here at the conclusion of this race darrell waltrip of course not point situation because he hasn't competed in all the races he was 26 going into the in car number 75 who is getting a serious challenge from Tommy Houston and ever since you've been to the inside hold on to this vibe and we remember Tommy used an earlier of the first and second lap of the race something went through his windshield they put a piece of plexiglass over right in front of his face father Tommy just a little bit you can imagine the tremendous with on that wind field we held together well it has take it car number 75 daddy turn one with the better line going into quarter number one and Houston getting a little squirrely there in quarter number one you think of almost all the corner to get the thing back under control we haven't talked much about the v6 engine here today it certainly is an engine that has performed well in this division of course in what the last two races with Morgan Shepherd but factor here this afternoon No sure honey the cars out there and apathy sixes and whether they're the Chevrolet v6 or the Buick v6 but I think maybe Davy Tommy Houston I think has a v6 so there's various groove we grant isolation had the best thing this is a testing ground continuing to watch grad team on the racetrack as we have completed 144 laps we've only got three more to go Darrell Waltrip appears to be on his way to victory he is in turn number four when he comes down it or laps to go the white flag will come out next time Lord darrell waltrip well this race appears to be in handless once again talk about tomorrow many you'll be out there on this track starting in third position we wish you well but who do you anticipate as being strong tomorrow well it's certainly Dale Earnhardt Darrell walked up the fellas that we've seen out there today are going to be very tough Jeff vote on the poll he is extremely strong there's probably 50 guys that I can name that and win the race to Bob at those four Darrell Waltrip has received a white flag there is less than a lap to go in that Dixie cup Madrid he comes off of corner number two moving to the inside darrell waltrip from Franklin Tennessee wins the Dixie cup rad national race here at Darlington International Raceway now we watch this battle between 20 and Tommy Houston here off the corner and Teague once again with an outstanding performance finishes in spot second was Dale Earnhardt third was brett bodine fourth was the number 69 of rick wilson and in fifth spot was Davey Allison Stevie Walter was happy here Darrell is too of course be talking with him and Victory Lane in just a moment a great performance by Darrell here this afternoon and did everything just right as far as a tire decision is concerned I think you're exactly right Bob he did make the right decision he decided to stop and change four tires get behind and once he got in front he decided to stay on the racetrack good decision by Darrell Waltrip all right we will be back to talk with him in victory lane in just a moment Darrell Waltrip wins here at Darlington this afternoon will be Tripp has one before we go down to Victory Lane we going to excuse many Parsons here because he has a practice session coming up in just a few moments but Benny the best of luck tomorrow we hope that you do well I hope so I hope it will be good Bobby certainly has been a pleasure working with you the last two weekends and I look forward to doing again in North Wilkesboro that's right just next weekend when we will again have some great NASCAR racing good luck to you tomorrow Betty thank you all right down to the pit area now and Jack arute in victory lane and this is not an uncommon place for Darrell Waltrip but on a Saturday afternoon normally it's on Sundays congratulations Darrell Thank You Jackie just a super run by the car and by the crew I have so many unsung heroes on this team that work just like everybody else does on Grand National cars but they work on this little sportsman car for me and keep it tuned up real nice and I like to thank good your time rubber company for some good tires today and also for Ron Neil a prototype engineered up in Chicago that built this motor and it runs so good and of course 80 and all the boys it worked so hard on the car I'm one thank the Lord for a good safe race goes that I had a couple opportunities there I think I had a couple with me today let's talk about the crew though and Stevie being part of the food because we saw she helped in the decision today you guys came in took on right-side tires then another caution you took on left side tires Earnhardt didn't know is that what made the difference well I wanted to do the tires I had on this car the race we're not very good I qualified on I don't mean it wasn't very good they wasn't as good as I said I had practiced on so I was anxious to get those tires on the car and in all honesty early in the race I could I saw I could outrun everybody and I wasn't too worried and knew when I got fresh tires only a couple rounds of bite that Eddie and Donnie and everybody we're getting out of it and we'd win this race it's just a neat day and they think Budweiser in the course don't forget about colonial bread got ahead at ready that chicken and drink is bear with you've been with the grand national series when it was a late-model sports Mystery's and you won so many so many victories there at the nashville raceway compare the class of competition now Darrell to let's say maybe when you were in it you were the the hot dog well you know the thing is they used to upset me so bad guys like Bobby Allison and even Jack Ingram and Morgan Shepherd a lot of guys who's come to Nashville where I was supposed to be the champ and they beat me and I used to get right upset about that and of course I see why now they had a little more experience than I did at the time and that's really there's no substitute for experience in this game being 39 years old as a blessing it in the hindrance okay tomorrow can you make it to if there was any way that I could get this the Grand National car the Winston Cup car to handle like this car died left the field but so far I have been able to do that this is a this car is a phenomenal record as you know you've done a piece on it before and it's the car won here with last September this the car that Terry Labonte won with in Charlotte and I want it I had to win today because last time it was real interior one I want to be sure I was still up as good as he was anyway but we'll see if he can win two more and tell you what guys I'm gonna be a little late I'm going to get that chicken and that Budweiser and everything else you offered our congratulations from the booth to Darrell Waltrip who did an outstanding job here this afternoon in winning the Dixie cup 200 grand national race well we're gonna take this break and then be back with some closing comments a look ahead to tomorrow's Winston Cup race from Darlington we'll be right back hundred grand national race from Darlington International Raceway has been won by Darrell Waltrip finishing second was Dale Earnhardt third was Brett Bodine fourth was Rick Wilson and fifth was Davey Allison finishing in sixth position was Brad Teague seventh was Tommy Huston eighth Jack Ingram ninth was Donnie Allison and tenth was Larry Pearson we understand there was nearly a photo finish for fourth place as Rick Wilson and Davey Allison really went neck-and-neck there in the last few feet of the race but it appears as if Rick Wilson did come out on top there and finish in fourth position the time of the race was one hour 37 minutes and 56 seconds the average feat 123 point four to two miles an hour there were nine cars on the lead lap at the end of the race we had ten lead changes among five drivers and there were six caution flags for a total of 24 laps and no injuries here this afternoon the most serious appearing accident occurred with Charlie Luck and they came on lap number 12 but Charlie was not injured so we anticipate some great action here tomorrow in the Winston Cup race as Geoff Bodine will be starting from the pole position in tomorrow's event and Tim Richmond his teammate will be alongside well today 6ii Cup 200 has been brought to you by Ford and your Ford dealer have you driven a Ford lately and by Bush beer the beer was a taste as smooth as its name tomorrow morning at 10 o clock Jackie Stewart and Larry Hoover will have the
