town of only 2400 called Watkins Glen but the very mention of that name means auto racing the auto racing Museum in the village recalls some of the memories the first race here was in 1948 it was on a 6.6 mile course in the streets won by Frank Griswold jr. in an Alfa Romeo a permanent Road course was built in 1957 NASCAR raced here then but their most recent visit was in 1965 28-year old Richard Petty was in that race and he's here again today at age 49 the u.s. grown free formula Run race was held here beginning in 1961 Bill Hill and Graham Hill just to run free drivers who have raced at the Glen the last Formula One race was held here in 1980 all professional races cancelled in 82 and 83 but a new and more beautiful Watkins Glen track was opened in 1984 to continue the tradition there's an aura floating around this place like at Indianapolis and well you know when I go in here the other day I you know you could tell this is someplace special the Klan is back NASCAR is back and ESPN ready for live coverage of the Budweiser at the Glen hi the weather partly cloudy skies 67 degrees humidity a 35 percent northwesterly winds at 15 and a 40 percent chance of rain this afternoon good afternoon everybody hi Bob Jenkins along with IndyCar champion Rick Mears while these Winston Cup drivers aren't completely foreign to road courses they compete at Riverside twice each year however it's something that's not necessarily second nature and there must be a lot of mental preparation on behalf of the driver and a lot of preparation in the pit areas to run this road course Rick what about mental preparation well with the mental preparation I think the you know the biggest factor is reprogramming yourself to hustle a car a little bit more when you come from a super speedway where you run a little bit more of a fine line little bit more of a finesse you can't make a mistake well here you have to helpful a car a little bit more throw the car sideways more and just kind of program yourself to do that I think that's the biggest biggest job well that's the preparation that must go on the behalf of the driver now as far as the crews are concerned let's go to our pit announcer for the afternoon Jack arute Bob the preparation begins long before the time that they unload these cars in Watkins collect these Winston Cup competitors are used to running in a counterclockwise direction they've got to make the changes back over to the clockwise road course direction the preparations a lot of them take place back at the shop one of the more obvious changes is the repositioning of the fuel filler from the left side of the car to here on the right side now they do that so it's closer to pit wall because teams don't want to lug 22 gallons of gas and farther than they have to now the front of the car reflects some concessions to road racing as well aerodynamics are still important but cooling takes priority so teams open up the headlight panel and force air beneath the hood through duct work to provide cooling to the brakes because of the severe workout they get it's a technique used on short tracks but seldom seen on super speedways the clockwise concentration upon right-hand turns also puts a lot of attention upon weight distribution but this time it's shifts from the left to the right you want to get as much weight as possible over the drive wheel in this case the right-side wheel so all the coolers are moved to the right side even the fire extinguisher and extra lead weights or put as far right as possible steering changes to road racing requires quick steering so crews up for a quicker and more sensitive steering box so the drivers can sip through the SS and the sweepers here at Watkins Glen finally the transmission is modified and it's made as bulletproof as possible in anticipation of the more than 100 shifts during the course of today's race now despite all the best preparations when you unload the car you can still have problems and for more on one driver who encountered plenty of problems before the start of this race let's go back to Bob Jake well it happened Friday during a qualification attempt Phil Elliott hard into the guardrail in turn number five bill was not injured in the crash the car was repaired it qualified on Saturday but bill will start in 22nd position well the Budweiser at the gland event being brought to you back at Watkins Glen New York where 36 Winston Cup cars and drivers will be moving out in just a few moments to start this 90 lap race on a 2.4 to 8 mile road course very historic and famous Road course and we are live on this Sunday afternoon course earlier today you saw the Formula One race from Hungary here on ESPN and now an afternoon of Winston Cup NASCAR stock car racing back in 1957 but Baker was the winner of a NASCAR race and as Chevy here at Watkins Glen in 1964 Billy Wade won in a mercury and the most recent NASCAR race was in 1965 and Marvin Panch was the winner of that race in a Ford he is here today as the honorary starter of the event so not a real historic background as far as NASCAR stock car racing is concerned but of course they have run many types of cars on this track including Indy cars Rick that you have competed in yes we did it was a you know it's a great track for any cars it's been good to us we had some good finishes here and it's a fun track to run on so you know maybe someday we can get them back here let's hope so there are seven corners that we'll be concerned with today they're running the shorter course now there is a larger course that is used sometimes but they cut off a portion of it to run the NASCAR cars and there are seven turns that will be concerned with five of them are right-hand turns and only two left handers as you can see the drivers are being strapped in their cars right now the NASCAR officials are standing by ready for the command to start the engines then we'll have a couple of warm-up laps before we get the green flag for this 90 lap event not one of the longer races on the Winston Cup circuit for this year but it certainly is enough I think because of all the preparation that's that's gone on so far in practice and qualifying quite frankly the crews just do not know what to expect as far as gearing is concerned and brakes and those are two things that we certainly will be keeping an eye on during this race today well let's go down to the pit area with Jack arute who is with Buddy Baker not a driver in today's event well normally by the driver of the Crisco racing special when he hears the command that was just given gentlemen start your engines would say a little prayer to himself buckle the seat belt and be ready to go but Buddy Baker is not behind the wheel the car we'll hear more about that later you're the crew chief today buddy you're dealing well dad dad is with how all love in the world in Frisco sorry what family nice fellow to work with and we put a man in the car that would be able to win the race that's what it's all about yeah but now buddy you're a pretty intense individual this guy really takes is racing to heart how intense are you going to be as a crew chief do you think you'll be as bad as our driver as far as the intensity or a little better well let me play them we've done everything we can to prepare car and make you very comfortable foul and you know what kind of rate strawberry is be the best number of course if we've got the car been when the rates of electroscopes are be right up front we'll get to see a lot of his activity because he's the in-car camera let's go back up to Bob and Rick and the field begins to move away now there goes al azhar senior Geoff Bodine on the right along with Dale Earnhardt Richard Petty on the lap the entire field beginning to move out now and they'll take as I said to pace laps before we get the green flag they lease a starting line area and go down a short straightaway into turn number one and Rick you've driven this course so perhaps you can fill us in on what this course is really like okay let's turn one it's going to be an exciting course at the beginning of the race you know you get into that corner pretty hard a lot of cars running close you come in there into third carrier sometimes club car sports being on the gearing you'll downshift clear down into second gear through this corner it tightens up pretty good in the middle car can't get a little loose on the exit times go up over the give up a little bit on our side sometimes but as little as possible into attended to turn to which is a fast right handy approach a quarter in probably third gear fourth depending on the gears and it's a very quick right hander we hold the car a little bit tight is set up for the left and can't get the car load bit loose did you start going back up the hill out of turn to start coming little bit you know getting into turn three which is a very fast left-hander the roads a little narrow there you got the guardrails off both side and as you go over the bridge template it makes car a little bit like and that can second get your heart started sometimes this is the area of the track we refer to as the esses that's turned two three and four and right now they're between the pace cars leading to peel down did you come out of turn three is it turn forth the kind of a right-hand sweep or leading onto the back straightaway very long straightaway it's very quick I believe they're running coaching close 270 mile an hour recommend yeah we will have trap speed information relayed to us we do have someone out in that area to race track with a radar gun but as you indicated Rick they were running white at 170 miles I think 169 in my village just before it crashed and most other trap speeds have been in 160 to 165 or six mile an hour category now they're on the backstretch here and it's going to be interesting because especially on that first lap everybody's going to be wanting to try to put as much distance between himself and the next guy and imagine they're going to be standing on the accelerator okay going into turn fighters it shows that's where Billy Elliot had his problem to get under braking in front the corners karts can't get logic rest the hill okay this is going into turn six ninety two cars running through it and it's a pretty good left-hander you downshift probably into third gear it's kind of the same thing a lot of guys use the curve a little bit on the left side to get the left front light to take the rear of the car around a little bit and you know helps the turning of the car for the X to the corner then I'm going to turn seven which is a little bit tighter corner you'll break - you're probably the come off of that corner they come on the corner number seven and go by our broadcast position here on the main straightaway they complete one tape Lac and next time.bye they should be able to get the green flag the Budweiser at the Glen Winston Cup race ready to go here on ESPN and here is the starting lineup on the pole in car number 25 to Bulger Chevrolet from Julie North Carolina Ashland Ohio Tim and Willie T ribs decided to withdraw from the starting lineup for inside Allen's our seniors race car number 88 Briscoe O's will be on that starts outside of row number three in six positions of pace car pulls off here comes the veal down they get the green flag and the putt Weiser at the Glen Winston Cup race is underway we're glad you're with us on this Sunday afternoon stay with us for an afternoon of exciting racing it looks like this darrell waltrip s trapped the lead for false enter Tim Richmond let's see if everybody gets through that first corner okay it appears if they hand everybody up into turn number two Neil stringing through there and it's a good battle for that says Tim has gotten back that top spot as the number 27 car of Rusty Wallace and Darrell Waltrip battle side by side they go down to log backstretch and we should see some passing as they come down here that's Rusty Wallace going to the outside of Tim Richmond and going into second position Tim Richmond is back in third place already so we've had three liter at least two lead changes here in the first lap of competition Errol Walters qualified here this weekend on the road course he did expensive testing in this car and put it on the outside of row number two but right behind him is our pole-sitter Tim Richmond Tim getting this the right side of the car off the tractor [Applause] [Music] and here they come the completion of lap number one in his darrell waltrip followed by Rusty Wallace then Ricky rod has moved into third position followed by Harry Kent and Tim Richmond is definitely falling back in regulates the course a little bit that may evoke maybe just got a wheel up over there takes a while to gather back up sorry that's what put him up into the third position Ricky rut started around seven spot and is all the way up into third right now there should be a little bit of slope or something coming from the rear end of rusty Wallace's car I've noticed that a couple of times at the moment I don't know what it is but it isn't right behind our leader if there is Allen's or senior who's right behind him Richmond in Richmond addiction and alchemy R in seventh position car look like I've been a little bit of fuel overflowing that left me in Corinth is going out right rear corner which is probably causing that allons our senior negotiating this racetrack here at Watkins Glen behind Tim Richmond we understand that Richmond's car has missed the engine is misfiring our spotters around the core 7 corpus of bats will keep an eye on Tim Richmond's car has fallen back here at the beginning of the race to completed its bill roughly Wallace trailing darrell waltrip that's how close they are you can see the slight interval between second and third position as well as please the third-place ricky rudd I do not notice any of that fluid or his car stolen [Music] there's a little tire smoke there but again apparently it's not affecting the handling or the running of that car at all these two are taking off and leaving the rest of the field they come down to backstretch approaching a hundred and sixty five miles an hour here to trap speed on that last lap with 160 point seven or in the corner no right behind our leader Darrell Waltrip we're on lap number three of this 90 lap race good afternoon enrichment car is developing a myth that it's only within a certain rpm range I talked to Harry licenses.only up around 6,000 so when he comes up through the gearboxes to 6000 it misses when he gets up higher than that it goes away they're not quite sure what the problem is but now we see there's another blown motor on the course gentleman and we're not at this point but he has moved the car to the inside of the racetrack and will try to determine well it's car number 63 that's the JA coma Giacomo machine Jocko competing in Winston Cup events here in the eastern portion of the United States competes regularly at Pocono and came here this afternoon and that number 63 machine the Lyn ro corporation Buick and we have a yellow flag on the course and we assume it's because of that blown engine the crews will be coming out to see whether or not there was any oil dropped on the surface creating a hazard for the drivers so the pace car comes out in an overall gentle has been called for by the NASCAR officials and there is the number 67 buddy Arrington machine also coming in for a pit stop they're refueling the car but it's certainly a little bit early for routine pit stops but buddy makes a quick stop and gets right back out there in competition so rather early yellow here with only three laps completed the leader of this race is Darrell Waltrip running in second position is Rusty Wallace third is Ricky Rudd and in horse fun at the moment is Harry King we'll be back with more live from what the race is under yellow here at Watkins Glen New York because of a blown engine on the jacoba Giacomo machine car number 63 and a little bit of oil fluid out on the racetrack so the crews have come out to clean it up try to establish the radio communication here with Bobby Allison Bobby Allison this Bob Jenkins in the ESPN booth can you hear me Bobby at the moment is running in 11th position that we're apparently having some communication problems with him filled in single file formation now up through the esses the way they're running we have buddy Arrington back in the pits for the second time in the matter of just a few minutes here the leader Waltrip 2nd is Wallace third is Rudd fourth is Harry Gant fifth is Neil Bonnett sixth position is the pole sitter Tim Richmond who dropped back at the start of the race because of an apparent misfire in the engine Al Unser running in seventh and eighth position is Geoff Bodine ninth is Richard Petty and tenth is Dale Earnhardt seventh is Bobby Allison 12th is Benny Parsons 13 Terry Labonte 14th position is Joe Ruttman and 15th at the moment is Kyle Petty number 26 carb Joe Ruttman has probably made the biggest move of the race so far he started 21st he was the fastest second day qualifier on Saturday and has moved to 14th position Joe Ruttman moving up well through the field and we understand that rain is falling in back sections of the racecourse and that's something that we really have not talked about there were some black clouds in front of us but we have had black clouds and threatening weather about all weekend but it hasn't rained here on the track but apparently it is now and of course that is not good for high speed racing conditions and running in 14th position as the field remains under yellow there's only about a 40% chance of rain listed here this afternoon but apparently there is a little bit of moisture falling on parts of the racetrack not quite the type of situation that Indy cars have because when it rains you can live with a little bit of moisture in stock car racing but not so heavy cars break now it's a-okay though over the weekend since we've been here is the rain has been kind of come in and go away it hasn't really been a lot of real hard downpours until maybe late in the day it see a little bit of moisture on the windshield there about Unser's car that's definitely enough to make the car little slippery yeah certainly is so the peel slowed because of a blown engine on Djokovic emotion and rain falling in back sections of the course pace car comes down the main straightaway here leading the leader of the race darrell waltrip go talk to Allan's or senior about mental preparation changing from Indy cars to stock cars you just have to change your way of thinking it doesn't you still drive an IndyCar by the seat of your pants I don't care what anybody says you know that they say the downforce takes over but it doesn't if it did why did so many guys wreck with them you know so it doesn't always work that way but the stock cars are more see to your pants feel because they don't have the grip comments from Al Unser who was one of 12 drivers in the IROC race yesterday there is Buddy Baker the crew chief now on this machine mile senior lead for a great portion of that high rock race yesterday and we'll talk with Rick Mears about this performance in that race adjustable but the first of all let's go down to Jack arute to talk about the weather and the rain coming down well the Winston Cup crews may have a little benefit that they normally don't enjoy here in Watkins Glen there's a coveted area that generally takes maybe 80% of their pit so there and if they have to get in out of the weather be able to satisfy that boils back out of the engine before it goes racetrack will give you a price that well we have noticed some type of fluid coming from that car it did look like it was coming from the fuel vent area but they could very well be some oil leeching from that race car so Rusty Wallace despite the fact that he got off to a great start and is now in second position may have a problem with that al you guard Pontiac we're still under yellow at Watkins Glen and right back [Music] Aires and Jack arute this is Bob Jenkins back at the Watkins Glen International race course where the Budweiser at the Glen Winston Cup race is underway and we haven't seen much action quite honestly so far we went about three laps under green than the yellow came out because of some oil on the racetrack and because of rain falling in some portions of this track the leader is Darrell Waltrip in car number 11 second position is Rusty Wallace third is Rick Ricky Rudd and fourth is Harry Gant and fifth place is Neil Bonnett we haven't talked very much about what to expect as far as pit stops are concerned Rick I guess most of the crews are expecting two pit stops during this relatively short race I believe it the two to three depending on what kind of mileage a job but and also another thing as far as pit stops go you know we talked about the brakes being a problem as far as this track is concerned and you know 37 M pound car trying to stop it in these corners that really is hard on brakes I've even heard a couple comments from a couple of talking about actually changing brake pads during the race Bobby Allison crew did indicate that they were at least prepared to make changes in the brakes and to repair and replace them during the course of the event so that certainly is a possibility at this time when these pit stops as far as they like our the pit location a pretty good move on where he stood it in the pit lane being at the very end I know this pit lane when you come in here you come off of turn seven you can get a good run going into the pits but then you if you're pitted at the front you have to stop and you take off to get a good run and that corner exiting the pit is very tight so you have to stop again so it's almost like you'll have to make one stop instead of two you can stop right to bury in and just start getting up to speed as the exit filling watching Bobby Allison out on the racetrack behind Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty Tommy has had good success on road courses yes six wins at Riverside International the last one was in 1981 but he has had twenty top-ten finishes in 37 Riverside starts the word is being given to the drivers now by Harold kinder the official starter for NASCAR that they'll go back to green in one more lap the lights on the pace car are out and that indicates that they will go green next time around we had an opportunity to talk with Rusty Wallace about his expectations here at Watkins Glen do you think there might be a problem with the fact that at Riverside there's a lot of runoff area you get into the sand here you got guardrail to contend with well that is definitely a problem you have to stay on the racetrack there's a lot of grass around this place when you hit that grass you just take off like crazy and it's not like the sand that River started when you hit that you can fairly get the car in control here you don't have any controls what happened to Bill Elliott when he qualified to the ran broke off underneath then when he hit that grass it took off but you've got to pay attention what's going on to stay on the track and Bill Elliott crash would put hurt on the Friday he was actually warming up just to take the Greens by course qualification attempt was at least a very serious-looking race the car got on top of and part of the car over the guardrail but they did get the car back into the garage area and make repairs he qualified on Saturday second day qualifier it was the second fastest during that qualifying session with Bill Elliott looking to move up through the field now here on race day there is the Elliott crew I'd say they did super job getting that car ready the way they did and Jack is down there ready to talk with the crew members Jack well I'm here with Dan Elliot one of the Elliot brothers and Dan you guys had to do a lot of heavy duty reworking after you got here to Watkins Glen in the problem with Bill's car now that the race has only run actually three laps under green as he reported as to whether the cars working doing satisfaction or not know hadn't got a chance to get out of the traffic enough to tell how the car is but according to what laps around yesterday it's still not what it was the first day that we got here how tough is it on a crew when you come out here you think you've got your best stuff ready to roll off the truck and then even before you qualify you just roll it up in a ball and have to try and straighten it back out to get into the field and we just had to do the best we can with what we had because we really didn't have we had a fire car in the truck but we won in County Carlow we needed to run here so we did the best we could of all we had left then we're going to give it our best shot today and I hope it's good enough when you talk about that spare car if you go take a look at it it looks like slide because there's an awful lot of parts of these missing objects Phil Elliott has moved up three positions here in the opening laps he was 22nd at the start and now 19 the field is beginning to come off of quarter number seven headed for the resumption of the race green flag is displayed and we are back to racing at Watkins Glen number twelve the opponent moving to the inside trying to pick up that fourth position from Harry Gant again it's a very bad start Gary drops back to position number 33 skull bandit of Harry Gant drops two positions as both was a great flag came out before they got into turn number one the field moving up now through the esses turns two three and four headed for the long backstretch darrell waltrip leading the single file formation down spread around 165 miles an hour now the corner number five darrell waltrip still leading but only by about one or one and a half car links over Rusty Wallace Ricky run in there in third position his back bumper and there is still some fluid coming out of that race car [Music] but there is no kind of type of fluid or smoke or something coming out off that racecar across the start-finish line once again this completes lap number nine nine laps completed out of 90 that will make up this now a little bit of separation between second and third once again at least in the early stages of this race Waltrip and Wallace are showing their superiority Ricky Rudd running in third spot but there is Nielsen regard on Neil Bonnett stand right up right up there with Ricky Rudd bonded running in fourth position having made the pass of Harry Gant and now again tires motivation [Music] here's person that could be single right away after that [Music] earlier this year at Bristol Tennessee and that's where we will be on a Saturday night we again return to that my bank half-mile facility in third let's go down to Jack arute Bob we were talking about the problems that have been following the 27 car with Lester Wallace before never been telling you that they were going to build for my royal again [Music] my rap cement also going to insert the car if it doesn't stop smoking shortly that's an interesting-looking little contraption there but if it works it works whatever since now Wallace appears to be ready to make a move yeah he's going to the outside of Darrell Waltrip Racing him down the backstretch it's a drag race last time cramp speed 158 but Waltrip is going to hang on to the lead but rusty certainly made a nice challenge [Music] very tough goodbye one outside I would imagine that there are relatively few places the past there are some straightaways now there in one year between but I would guess margin same places that you have actually passed now we see the enrichment of there is the best meal gone into fourth position so there is no man fifth ricky rudd followed by Tim Richmond and then Neil Bonnett now Wallace drops down to the inside here on the main straightaway only taking look though not really in a position to challenge as Darren Richmond continues to move back up toward the front of the field misfires not bothering to might settle things Richmond was the pole-sitter flying at 117 point five six three just about a mile an hour faster than the second fastest qualifier Darrell Waltrip here is Dave Marcus who has come in for an early pit stop there checking over the side of that car and looks like they made no tire change they did fuel the car up and Dave back out there I saw him playing with a net could have been the napping on the driver side off the car could have been askew or something anyway he wasn't in very long and he's back out there Rusty Wallace continues to challenge Darrell Waltrip for that lead Tim Richmond lying back there in third position followed by Ricky Rudd and Neil Bonnett following in sixth position is Jeff bodean in that yellow endzone Jeff had a problem in qualifying on Friday he went out to qualify just after a tremendous amount of oil was put down on the racetrack and Harry Gant has come in for a pit stop and this be a terminal situation for Harry Daniel Agustin it up he has had just terrible luck in Winston Cup racing in too fast of the past few races he had quite serious crashes both at Pocono and at Talladega and in the last three races his finishes have been 31st 30th and 22nd his best finish most recently was the second at the Michigan 400 several weeks ago they're putting the foot down on the Gant car and a motion for Harry to go back out there on the racetrack but there is obviously something wrong with that number 33 scull bandit little Smokies you will watch that situation he did not work online [Music] I'm Ricky bud Jeff coming up there and you know Jeff what our GPL race here with Jack Jack Baldwin so he's familiar with the course he's a little practice on it several these Winston Cup drivers have decided to compete in either GPO or some Geoff Bodine makes a move on Ricky Rudd to the inside choosing to get some experience on road courses by running the GTO series Benny Parsons has been competing in that series all of this in preparation for what was supposed to have been an L R series from NASCAR a left and right road for theory but that's kind of on hold at the moment and nobody really is certain as to whether or not there will be an L R series in the near future 13 laps have been completed they continue to run in the same order and Rusty Wallace once again smoking tires number five following the leader there old wall room we are live on the Sunday afternoon from what get a new yard for the Budweiser FS Carter the crew chief on Harry Gant tires just completed another clocking you had to bring Harry in early Travis what was the problem all look like it's going out of the breathers I I think we might've overfilled take a little bit of something that you control and it creates a lot of pressure in the creation that down shipping advance a motor pretty high so [Music] well there's another indication to Rusty Wallace over filling the crankcase [Music] well Harry Gant is certainly back in the field considerably you can see there that he's trying to move back up through the traffic but he has a lot of racetrack in front of him as far as catching the leaders so Harry Gant is not looking real good at the moment but the car at the same time not showing any evidence of but perhaps evident from the car as it goes down the backstretch talk about being back in a field Elliot's working Bill Elliott from 22nd position up to 14th and Joe Ruttman who started in 21st position and the spin has occurred in turn number three that's Rick Wilson in car number four looking at but getting going anyway rick wilson and that kodak sponsored car trying to make a good impression on his sponsors who are headquartered in Rochester who are from here Rick was running in 22nd position when that little incident occurred and now he's trying to get back up to speed Rick performed very well The Oval track races earlier this year a great performance at Talladega he wound up in 11th spot but was running with the leaders just about all race long there are those again it is Darrell Waltrip continuing to lead as he has caught up with Chet Phillip and about to put a lap on him Jeff moving over and allowing a faster cars to go to the inside and putting a lamb on staying right behind in that second position and now Jim Richmond is charging back up big move here and let's see if he does he may have to eat nice move by Rusty Wallace and he goes in the lead he's running that car pretty hard to keep slide the fires I've heard say when they're due there they're good for about ten laps and start tapering off a little bit so it's hard to say how hard he's using those tires it looks like he's using pretty well rusty came here with a lot of hope this weekend they did catch that car here perhaps had a little bit of an advantage on some of the other drivers who himself here as Rick Wilson head to the mist Jack arute is down there [Music] [Music] properly our friction relax [Music] there was thinking is not [Music] and actually being hung up they'll have to work after Wilson's Kodak powered machine and put it back on all right thanks jack indications are that the leader Rusty Wallace may be Black Flag because of that oil or whatever smoke that's coming from the car we'll watch this time around to see if Harrell kender does give him the black line but that is the indication Tim Richmond meanwhile is moved to second position as Darrell Waltrip has now brought back to third Geoff Bodine has moved up to fourth the deal bonded running into this position so those problems that beset Tim Richmond early apparently aren't as much of a factor right now it looks like Darrell's kind of decided the face was a little too strong for the race conditions so he's going to look how he's going to back off a little bit maybe save the tires save the brakes and work on a little bit later on well rusty does not get the black flag that time around but you can very easily see the smoke coming from the rear end of that race car Darrell Waltrip one of the smartest most intelligent drivers on the Western circuit as far as himself he gets out to an early lead he establishes what the car can do then very often will lay back for a few laps to watch what everybody else can do and then at the end of the race make a charge for the front they come down here once again and Rusty Wallace has about a seven or eight hours later madman Lomond second place we understand that Rusty Wallace will be making a pit stop this time around or at least in the very near future we'll keep an eye on that and the indications are also that if he does not come in for a pit stop on their own accord he will be was located right beneath us in our broadcast location has the black flag in handy is dropping to the inside of the racetrack and is coming in for the pitstop here's Jack Johnson and the crew have brought Rusty Wallace in required and they put little room sweating down on the fuel excellency as a minor and here's Elliot employee card beneath the hood you can see the smoke coming up from beneath it it looks kind of like a spray for mosquitoes this is going to be somewhat costly spot stop for your leader rusty whoa well in the meantime the static resolute inside the car doesn't look at all concerned about the problem he's just standing there and now he just a signal that he is indeed quite upset about this is taking longer than one would have expected the reason is that the areas that they have to get to a switch behind to what they call broker oil filters they're flat filters and they're trying to work their handed on that hot engine right between those filters and the air later the work continues it does softly spot stop now it looks like you may 11:04 ticker what a launch not he is just going to almost lose a lot but I don't think he is going to here comes a leader Tim Richmond across the start/finish line rusty is on the track and up to speed already he did not lose a lap but he is almost down tough break for what Rusty Wallace who was showing some very determined speed and ability there the early stages of the race [Music] Wallace of course from Fenton Missouri the 1983 a and a champion and the winner at Bristol earlier this year you'll recall he also drove relief for Ricky Rudd at Talladega a couple of weekends ago and did a tremendous job Ricky was not amazing well and was suffering a bout with the flu and Rusty Wallace stopped in stepped in for him took over that drivers needed [Music] that car to a respectable finish now Tim Richmond has the lead with Geoff Bodine running in second position like temp experienced early the race corrected itself brick call API could yeah the carburetor or something like that they don't they don't heal up cells very often but it could happen now he certainly is running like the car is in good shape at the moment now with just a few car lengths advantage on Jeff bodean who's running second Waltrip has dropped back to third position six dis Allen's or seventh is Richard Peddie aid as they learn are 21 is the number 22 car of Bobby Allison Harry Gant has pulled off the racetrack I don't believe this involves any kind of a spin I think that Harry has just simply pulled off the course and realizes that his race is over so Harry Gant is among the early threats to win this race who is out of competition Harry started in third but his day is over we'll be back with more in just a moment Rob Watkins Glen Winston Cup auto racing live on ESPN this Sunday afternoon we're at Watkins Glen New York for the first Winston Cup race NASCAR race at this 1965 the leader is Tim Richmond three leaders in this race Darrell Waltrip left for a while then Rusty Wallace and now the pole sitter we had a problem earlier that we still have a problem well perhaps Jack arute can answer that problem that question just a couple of moments ago there was a lot of activity and Gary I fit here for Jim Richmond Harry we thought you were going to bring him in you thought there was a problem well we have got a problem with a fuel pressure gauge it's reading zero in one's legs on the racetrack and timber bridges don't run out of fuel but we should be able to out there about ten more laps now and you let the problem you've got with the misfire at 6,000 rpm you find it a little incredible that you're leading this thing well we we had to switch ignitions we got a backup different and he switched it over to cure that problem so they get rid of one problem and another one start just those kind of days for Harry Heidi Cruz Wheldon there is an explanation on whether or not for the car is still missing they switch over to the backup ignition system and everything is okay well now you know on that fuel pressure gauge in the bill self for fuel pickup and as it feels getting low you know they've got 23 it could be just as running by the fuel pickup pickup a little air making the misfire it's another inherent problem of running on the road courses as opposed to the oval in Germany last year concerns with right and left here and there's some timing the leaders are approaching the number 16 [Applause] [Music] racer who competed last year with a BF goodrich team teaming with Jim Busbee however this year Rick lost that ride and now is trying his hand in Winston Cup racing we have a battle for the lead and Geoff Bodine grabs it going into turn number one so our fourth leader of the afternoon and the crowd loves it because Geoff Bodine this is his well perhaps we should say homely back but at least he's a favorite as Geoff Bodine was originally from Shaboom New York now he has the lead and making a nice pass on Tim Richmond course geoff bodine living down in pleasant garden north carolina but he grew up on the dirt tracks at the short track of upstate New York in the Chemung area here's a replay the cars now coming off of the seventh corner headed down the straightaway he goes to the inside of Rick coop and stands on the accelerator rigid might had a little bit of that misfire prevent he'll pick up off the corner which made him hesitate little not really give Jeff a good run on him and going into the corner on the inside Bodine has the lead [Music] and bow dine now has pretty decent racing here in the first few laps we've had four different leaders there was some concern that these cars would get strung out on this road course and wouldn't present as good a show as you normally see in Winston Cup racing but I'm quite impressed with with several others running right together on track and passing for the lead [Music] a little bit sideways that look like they're in the esses he's running pretty hard bargain but Bhutan always does run hard running about a hundred and fifty two miles an hour we understand at the end of this backstretch the perhaps beat that are being fed to us about a hundred and fifty one miles an hour so they're considerably slower than they were during the early stages of the way and mainly because the traffic out of the racetrack there is Joe Ruttman who apparently is having some problems as Rutman has slowed dramatically on the racetrack he was running at third position after after having started this race in 21st but Joe Ruttman and owned by Kenny Bernstein is in trouble I believe he's going to make it around at the entrance of the pit area right now he's going to make it but it looks terminal for lot of speculation from the Kenny Bernstein team as to who will be driving this car next year Joe Grumman apparently won't do rumors that Morgan Shepherd in that car next year Kenny says he'll have a formal announcement sometime probably later this week now there is no Elliott Burdine who's moved up to 11th spot after having started in 22nd so Bill and Alan's our senior has fun and he takes with him Dale Earnhardt the in-car camera providing Bubba was out in the car straightened around again and a yellow flag [Applause] and it could be because of Alan's are spent or maybe the race nevertheless the yellow flying asked about this second yellow off this race [Applause] once again going down the backstretch there he is that Crisco Oldsmobile Al Unser senior having been asked earlier this week to take over this wife of Buddy Baker who simply wanted to be the crew chief in this race and see how things are going as far as his crew is concerned and Geoff Bodine has come in for a pit stop and we may now begin to see some regular pit stops here in this yellow flag period it's going to allow the drivers to come in and get the needed tires and fuel that they need for their first pit stop the clock is ticking away on the levi garrett team and now they're going to come over and change rubber on the left side of the car so this will be a rather lengthy pit stop but we are under yellow so Geoff will not lose any valuable positions here at this road a lot of activity taking place they learn marketing service on his car for tires there Geoff Bodine has completed his activity increase iron arm fully and take the lead it's going to be close because that is the Florida the pits Darrell Waltrip and Richmond awesome [Music] all the way around for the top three positions here in white display also moving back out on the racetrack Richard Petty and Benny Parsons they've been in for their routine stops Alan's our senior is in I'm sure he's flat spotted the tires and moving back out right now after the scible spin that also involved Dale Earnhardt Bill Elliott moving back out on the racetrack but several others remain on pit road Kyle Petty is there now beginning to move out so is Joe Ruttman whose foot is up and that is something a little bit more serious than a routine pit stop Bobby Allison goes out and here is Rusty Wallace who has a flat tire and you can see it's very obvious there on the left rear tire is flat and as a matter of flat has come apart coming around he's trying to nurse that car to the pit area pretty much a handful when a tire goes on these cars perfectly are that they got the inter ladder and it holds the car up off the ground so you don't drag the suspension that kind of thing enough to help you get back into the pits but it's still tough no matter what got a letter so the second problem with the Rusty Wallace machine he came in earlier they tried to correct that apparently overfilled oil tank and now he has a tire problem we go inside Allen sirs car and can show you the problem that he experienced any indication as to fun light a golfer auger and it looked like the way the camera you know from the angle when he went into the corner it looked like the rear tires broke loose under braking and started around and he caught it you know the first time and it kind of gets you into tank slapper and in the second time it just went on around with him now unser senior has come in for a stop and is back out there but let's talk with Buddy Baker the crew chief and find out if there is something else wrong with the car Bob buddy Baker has a request he'd like to get a TV monitor down here because while we were chatting before we came on the air I said buddy any problems after else fun and you said who where what Savino is fun really did a pretty good job if he did spend out so the you know didn't really lose that many positions so he does the cars real tight right now we're making some adjustments on the stagger on the dart but he doing one way of a job I didn't know it's fun well let's also show you one of the problems on the road courses you see the scuffing and the rubbing on the inside of this tire Melissa is not taking place during racing activity it's actually taking place when these guys come down in for a pit stop what happens is because of the brake scooping when they turn the tires just a tad so that they can get them on and off it actually rubs that brake scooping up against the inside tire now if you're too far down pit road and you turn in too quickly you could cut one down left to say a phrase of that so there is some work that is going on on the racetrack they're looking at sections of the track and some guardrail we're under yellow at Watkins Glen once again and we'll be back in just a moment we are back at Watkins Glen New York for the Budweiser at the Glen Winston Cup race and this is the largest crowd we understand to ever see a Motorsports event at Watkins Glen even when they were running the Formula One Grand Prix here they have never seen such a crowd they had to shut off the infield from traffic very early this morning there has to be well over a hundred thousand people in attendance here not only are the grandstands full but they are two and three deep all along the fence that encircles this entire racetrack Rusty Wallace is back in the pit area they're trying to make sure that the car isn't rubbing against any wheel now Joe Ruttman who was also in the pit area has gone behind a wall and apparently is out of competition we are a third of the way through this event and at the moment there are four cars that have dropped from competition namely Giacomo Giacomo in the very early going with a parent blown engine the number 76 car bill good is out of the race Harry Gant pulled off the race track and as I indicated the most recent to drop out is Joe Ruttman in car number 26 well Neil Bonnett and number 12 is still out on the race track and in fourth position and this is the first time that Neil has competed in racing since an accident a few weeks ago Opel at Pocono in which he suffered some cracked ribs and other injuries and he's doing quite well we had a conversation with Neil earlier the weekend concerning his physical condition and whether or not he thought he could go the entire race last Thursday Friday I was questionable whether or not I could come up here and I know a lot of work and you know get in shape I believed where I can make the thing about Saturday Sunday I started coming around and first this week I really started feeling a lot better the word from Neil Bonnett now Bobby Rahal was sort of asked by jr. Johnson and others to stand by for some relief driving however rain Hall went home after the IROC race they do have a driver however standing by just in case Neil needs relief let's get more on that from Jack Bob actually what happened is they asked Bobby Ray Hall at Talladega be consider coming up here and he said well I'll be here for Iraq but I'm just not sure if I'd want to actually try my hand ray Hall has driven before the gentlemen next to me lives close by and nearby Rochester New York Doug Heffron he was a modified super modified standout who also showed his hand in Winston Cup competition and did quite well until you literally ran out of cash funds Doug what did it feel like for jr. Johnson to call you this week and say hey come on up just in case isn't ready to do the trick here I was I felt really honored once before back in 82 or 84 even asked me to get ready for when Darryl got two tickets Charlotte the second time was happen and sooner or later hopefully something's going to break for them in here and maybe I get a ride is it frustrating for a driver like yourself to know that people like to hear Johnson think enough of your talent to ask you to stand by and yet you can't secure a full time ride in competition yeah it's very frustrating you know I've gone out I've done the best I could do with the equipment that I've been driving and the brakes have been going my way but when somebody like that asks you to drive or be ready to drive the racecar it gives you a real big boost hopefully it'll keep going well obviously the report from trackside is that Neil Bonnett doesn't need any relief today that's the reason for the civvies here on Doug Heffron also guys let me fill you in a little bit about being the reconditioning that took place for Neil Bonnett you know where all that work took place in the now-defunct United States Football League training facilities for the Birmingham stallions that group put Neil bought it back together well enough to run here today kind of ironic isn't it yeah and Neil was bound to determine that he was going to complete this race not letting the physical injuries that he suffered a few weeks ago bother him at all and deal right now running quite well as he is listed in fourth position so we remain under yellow we should be going green momentarily right now ESPN and NASCAR present a track pack one of the biggest innovations the show itself in Winston Cup racing on road courses has been the use of the transmission under normal circumstances on the ovals in the short track a crew would slap a transmission in the car push it up into fourth gear on a start and let it be there until the caution on a road course you go through gear changes as many as fifteen or sixteen times from first to fourth and so on so a company such as Jericho transmission has introduced a new sort of transmission a quick change if you will you pull this section off once you get to the racetrack develop the proper kind of gearing for first second third and so on put it inside and go racing makes it a lot quicker whether you're in first gear or fourth gear and that's the key to winning on a road course this crack pack was brought to you by my carrot chewing tobacco time after time the quality comes through we've completed 30 laps out of 90 here at Watkins Glen New York we'll be back with more right after these messages the green flag has just come out over the racetrack once again and got the jump on there to drop the green reckon that's turnover one got a really good job in because that's kind of how are these kinds of private so they're going to be running hard it is got a good run at it coming off the corner now what do you do in your mind when you know that you're going green do you try to anticipate and build yourself up mentally for the drop of the green yes if you anticipated really the main thing you know you try to lay back just a little bit and hopefully get on the throttle before the guy in front of you does and everything works out right you approach the car in front of you as the thing goes green so you can just keep the momentum up and go out on fire and Jeff Bodine has also moved around Darrell Waltrip position position goes from first to third here at least half lap that we have run under greens and coming off that yellow now under spin that also involved Dale Earnhardt the both of those cars back in action we also mentioned that Joe Ruttman car had been pushed behind the wall however he is back out there in competition so Joe Ruttman is still in this race Tim Richmond leading Jeff bodean and Darrell Waltrip through the esses running in fifth position is ricky rudd sixth is Richard Petty in seventh position is Earnhardt eighth as Benny Parsons ninth is Bobby Allison and tenth is Al Unser Jack arute in the pit area can you both aware of something that I picked up quite interesting we talked about the race-based early on when Darryl Waltrip and company were just blistering this track the first four or five left the race they stopped by about two seconds now and what's interesting is I think there's two methods of attack right now one held by Tim Richmond and Jeff Bodine and has to run a little harder trying to stay out front the other one is by Darrell Waltrip it looks almost to me like he's waiting for the races Johnson and Jeff Hammond and they confirmed that that is the technique that they're going to use they've decided in their own mind a race pace they want to set they're not going to deviate from it regardless of whether they're running first second or third like what you miss right now I guess correct that's just basically something that you have to decide before the race whether you're going to go short race only 90 laps that you would be very much concerned and at least staying for the front as much as you can well you do want to stay close but you know you've seen already there are going to be some yellow so the guys can kind of use that a little bit lay back save the car save the brakes save the tires save the fuel and you know as they get the yellows bunch back up just try to conserve a little bit now these guys are running hard up front and everybody pitted down to 27 teammates no appeals could be like if the demonstration a good point about the yellows on road courses in IndyCar racing they waved a yellow flag only in that portion of the racetrack in which there is a problem but in this Winston Cup race [Music] twice already there displaying an overall yellow is Jeff bodean white- off of quarter number seven and head down the straightaway and geoff bodine let's see now if he makes a move on Tim Richmond going into turn number one he shoots to the inside the racetrack tries to go inside and does I tell you that surprising being able make that move there after being kind of paste a little bit downhill at turn one because they use akil's your momentum a little he still have enough to get by our six different leader of the afternoon for drivers and a replay of it almost move in turn number seven here on the straightaway he goes inside his slides under underneath breaking I just did that a little bit deeper a little bit harder he's beating the brakes up a little bit more here but it was well worth it it works that's a good point you perhaps take a chance in making that kind of a move to grab the lead momentarily but at the same time you may be using the brakes just a little too much he's pulling out here though he may be working strong enough well about that if he [Music] the brakes and the tires in school delete darrell waltrip now back in third position and his teammate Neil Bonnett running in fourth position so the Hendrick team making a good showing here rick hendrick will be the man that darrell waltrip runs for next year plans of course have already been announced for darrell waltrip to join the rick hendrick team with jr. Johnson after the season and Waltrip now approaching the second place car of Tim Richmond and we may be seeing past there Terry Labonte has pulled into the pit area and he drops out of competition and the problems that have beset Terry Labonte in the last few races continues at a tough time he didn't fix the Pocono a couple of races ago but in Talladega at the most recent Winston Cup event he was 38 he also had a 19th place finish in the firecracker 400 at Daytona it has not been what you would call a good season for junk in that engine and that's the reason why Terry Labonte has called it a day jr. Johnson replacement for darrell waltrip next year Terry was running an 11th position [Music] we watch the action on the racetrack Rutland has come in for another stop and Joe's behind the wall for you know if you watch waldrop here behind Tim Richmond his Farsi is he hooked up a little bit better he doesn't seem to be have the lead on her quite as hard as Tim does to run that same kind of pace so I think Darrell is in pretty good shape he's right along here not using the tires up that much and still able to run right with everybody Richmond [Music] Neil Bonnett and where he run into this Richard Petty and [Music] said he barely has that car hooked up because he's stretching out the advantage just a little bit as they met down the backstretch at about 155 miles an hour geoff bodine as we indicated was extremely unhappy after his long now focus our attention on Richard Petty as we went out on the race track to qualify after a lot of oil had been dumped and he thought that was quite unfair because after he qualified the crews did go out on the race track and never [Music] and a [Music] there's Richard Petty and Carver 43 he's running in the sixth spot at the moment staying up there with the leaders they come single-file down the main straightaway he's right behind Ricky Rudd and look at Benny Parsons make a move on Dale Earnhardt going into quarter number one and Rick down here it is where we see most of the power here that is that's where you're going to see most emphatic John on a road course that's really another one of the main differences between Road course vandals it's all your past is usually done going into or off from a corner and side by side trip which is we know so funny old see a lot of that here today so Betty Parsons moves to seventh Dale Earnhardt is back to eight Al Unser is in ninth and in tenth position is belt Eliot there's a good look at Benny Parsons never plays at the moment bill Elliot up to ten after the 22nd starting position so bill continues to run well [Music] to feel off for that quarter once again off the corner number there is Phil Elliott in the number nine machine virtually destroyed an accident here on Friday but they went to work and got the car put back together and it isn't looking too bad really it had a lot of good paint crinkles in it earlier this week I noticed earlier - he's gotta fight this time to work as way of doing those would be yellows be able to bunch up and he looks like he's going to run in a page save McCarthy's work as well to the trust earlier thirty eight laps have been completed bill Elliot by the way was the second-place finisher in the IROC race yesterday here at Watkins Glen also the second-place finisher in the pending reviewer in that race and didn't have one of your better days it was one of our better days we had a little bit of a misfire right to do this I just after we start dropped back a little bit I thought this be kind of crazy to put this garnet in front of laughs so he just felt better bringing home winner of that IROC race yesterday for swiss announcer junior who also wound up as the IROC champion for 1986 there is the leader Jeff bowtie and we have Chet Phillip who has gotten off the race track got the wheels off finals they even made a complete spin maybe he did but no serious problem that occurred in quarter number two and Chet Phillip is back on course and building up speed once again we'll be back with more of our live coverage of the Budweiser Jack arute back with Bob Jenkins and Rick Mears here at Watkins Glen for the Budweiser as a gland and this gentleman standing next to me has retired from the company corner Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte carries some burn berries which out I get that what it was that's what we think it was anyway what about the competition out here today is it as good as you expected it to be it looks like one whale grace well it is it's awful hard to pass that's the biggest thing I wouldn't expect that's going to be a little bit easier to pass people than it was well it was tough to pass for Terry Labonte but there's been an awful lot of passes up front having their guys they really have as we indicated we've had six different leaders in this race and there is Rusty Wallace who led early and a couple of problems but he is running pretty well at the moment and trying to thread his way back through the traffic and move his way up to the front once again Rusty Wallace is now number 27 al you guard Pontiac running right behind Morgan Shepherd the way rusty was running earlier I don't think you'll have much problem working his way back up there unfortunately he did lose a lap on that no he did yeah Morgan Shepherd Shepherd involved in a race for position here ahead of him as and also bobby allison they're running 4 11 12 and 13 [Music] have the in battle involving 8th 9th and 10th in a sailor heart now after senior and Bill Elliott in position there's the in-car camera right at the start/finish line and maybe if we stay with us long enough we could go around the track l had a little trouble before - that looks like a trash gets a little bit slippery now and it will if the day goes on a little bit more so this is a very quick corner here it's a tough lot something I look D'Argo's left the car gets my feet back into the right hand even look at the local sharper than it looks right here when actually in the car you know we compare this track or at least talk about the fact that these Winston Cup drivers compete at Riverside on a road or go there I'll make it evolve on him and passing as they go down the direction that's where the hands are going to be done during the time [Music] unlike Riverside this of course has develop a changes there's actually some up and down hills and I imagine some blind spots on this race appliance posit you know the corner workers working it with a flag or they do a good job of letting you know if there is a problem but you just really have to stay on your toes and look for any telltale signs all crazy counsel with horizon the lead continues to be held by Jeff bodean it's about a four second lead now poor Jeff as we continue to stay in car with Al Unser senior Benny Parsons has come in for a pit stop they're changing the rubber on the left side of the car and refueling it perhaps not a routine pit stop for Benny because they pitted on about laps 27 and 28 and can go much further that we have gone without a routine pit stop so Benny Parsons has the work completed he goes back out there see if the problems that he is maybe experiencing in that car continue there's Bodine with the four second lead he's really struggling out here I'm feeling now far now being cometh don't settle down it just kind of get into a rhythm and everything work for him Tim Richmond in second position the number twenty-five Folgers machine Darrell Waltrip running in third and Neil Bonnett in fourth spot driven by ricky rudd earlier today here on ESPN the Hungarian Grand Prix as the Formula One circus went behind the Iron Curtain for the first time in modern Formula One history and in case you missed it Nelson Piquet was the winner of finishing in second nigel mansell third and [Music] and not even a week break now and they go right back to raising in the week from today in Austria another race that we'll have for you here on ESPN Sunday morning next Sunday promises to be one of the most [Music] the history of ESPN one race for you from Austria then we will have the Winston Cup race from Michigan International Speedway the two-mile tri-oval and which is always standing and then on a tape delayed basis next Sunday evening we will have the Pocono 500 for NZ cars and we'll talk with Rick Mears a little bit about that just a few moments of testing there right now we'll take this break and be right back to wander right after our NASCAR race this afternoon join us for the finals of the Volvo International it will be a rematch of the Wimbledon final and let's all versus Becker Vermont you'll want to be with us right after we conclude this Winston Cup event here in Watkins Glen for the Volvo International Lundell against Becker the leader here at Watkins Glen in this Winston Cup event is Geoff Bodine with about now a five-second advantage on Tim Richmond Darrell Waltrip for Cleo bonnet and fifth is Ricky Rudd there you can see the advantage that he has pulled out to here as we are just past the halfway mark it looks like Elliott might be backing off the pace a little bit for some reason Bill Elliott was running up there in the top ten however he has dropped out of the top [Music] I mean Wallace is we'll have to go with the official word from NASCAR Rusty Wallace who did make a couple of unscheduled pit stops because of a couple of problems including a flat tire of the left rear of the car is in the lead lap and running in ninth spot back inside the Al Unser Crisco Oldsmobile he negotiates this two point four to eight mile racetrack in seventh position it's pretty respectable joint Allen sir who was called upon just earlier this week to take over this done a great job they held the racer he didn't get anything nice to have a guy like that at least your teammate is a opponent but at least it is good pictures from the in-car camera coming to us there he is coming down the straightaway again he's running in seventh position Allen's our senior one of those who will be in competition next weekend as we go back to the leader Geoff Bodine let's talk about the Pocono 500 Rick you've done some testing there and what can we expect anyone else we have you know the cars are going to be quick they're even in front of it a little bit of a bump and turn two but cars working on have to get that little settle down a little bit but ours is going to be quick I don't know if you're going to see as big leaps or bounds or gain in speed there as we have income the other [Music] we'll expect next Sunday evening on a delayed basis the Domino's Pizza 500 from Pocono Pennsylvania Jack arute who's with Gary Nelson well Bob actually were high atop pit road and what they call pit boxes now they sell DC I don't think they sold one of this guy Gary Nelson is calling the shot on top of his pit position for the lead by Jarrett Chevrolet Gary why have you closed in here to call the run down the road well this area is right above our pits you know I think it's a bird stock all right that scene from the standard radio doesn't work under there because we're tracking like concrete I get up on top here and I can talk to Jeff up on the offer ends of the court and uh we got to call them in a piss in a hurry I got a donkey right up there are in the race are running away to fight it in the way you'd like it I only like it ones are out front down you know just oh he was gonna run it as hard as how to do to the car you're doing a good job lap times are really convincing and I think glory don't trouble where is good well okay and the report is that he will be pitting in about four or five laps what's in there I want to show you something Richard all you want to talk about some irony look at the name of the boots the Gary Nelson is calling the shots Flo quite ironical as the Levi's Garrett Chevrolet driven by geoff bodine ladies this one wiser at the glint and he has stretched the advantage to about seven seconds over Tim Richmond Jeff Conine the halfway point and we will have four live coverage from Watkins Glen New York right after these messages they with back at Watkins Glen New York for the putt Weiser at the Glen and the Napa mid race recap shows us the statistics that you need to know the leader at the halfway point Jeff bodean he had led a total of 14 laps and had at that time about a four and a half second lead but it's now more like a seven time an hour and 40 minutes the lap leader won't get the most laps in this event but right now is running in fourth position the average speed of the race ninety six point four to nine miles an hour we've had two caution flags nothing for anything serious a total of nine laps 21 cars on the lead lap and 31 out of the 36 that started still in the event and there are the five drivers that have dropped out Giacomo Giacomo out early so is feel good Harry Gant is out Joe Ruttman and Terry Labonte those five cars have dropped from competition but Geoff Bodine is continuing to set the pace here as thousands of interested race fans watch this Winston Cup event from Watkins Glen New York there's a look at the pit area jack has been describing them to you the two-tiered pit area which basically I think is a indication to the Formula One racing that used to be held here there is jr. Johnson watching the progress of his team and his drivers are running in third and fourth bonded his third and Darrell Waltrip in fourth position back with more right after these messages from Watkins Glen chef beau tines leads the budweiser at the Glen Winston Cup race with about an 8 second leave now on Tim Richmond though dine has led 20 laps we are on lap number 52 and we will be the pit stops here in the next few laps the about the maximum number of laps they could [Music] three and right now within about three the second and perhaps last series of his stop there is second place Tim Richmond a car number 25 really has really stretched out the advantage here he's got the car working very well he's running a good comfortable pace it's just their day's going and it is 10 second lead now for Geoff Bodine over tamp Richmond there is Jeff once again by Garrett Chevrolet the enrichment coming out of the esses yes sir I was doing a good clean job here it's been a good clean race so far bye you [Music] we have had a couple of spins but nothing of any significance whatsoever so yes it has been a very interesting race on this road of course we sing some fun good and rusty was too soon that's right boy rusty has had a terrible day grace started out so well for the yellow flag is out yellow is out this is going to allow for their second series so we'll prepare for they fit socks Jack will position himself to watch and call some of the major leaders how they do in the pit area rusty led in the early 42 this race looking so strong in that Pontiac but then things started and Lauren and the apparently still is on the lead lap and running in seventh position but he may have lost a couple of spots there in that bunch of all backup who's been holding one up there sleep and there is Jeff bodean still out on the racetrack but we assumed that he really coming in for his stop in just a moment here she ate the quarters as the meals posture because it has been by [Music] and here comes Jeff bodean into the pit area will watch his stop Jack arute is right there the pitch Bodine is committed to fifth Gary Nelson to levi characterless gone to work they're going to the left side tires and now they will make the switch around [Music] enrichment is come in that zone [Music] what later in depth what I did there and in 26.6 second Jeff Bodine has completed his work meanwhile Richmond is going to work Jim Richmond's crew also out of the Hendrick operation they are working on his machine left sides have been completed they're going to go to the right side as we speak this as we said is the difference between pitting and one end of the pit road and the other butyne is away but in the lengthy pit stop for Jeff Richmond they continue to work on the car the clock is ticking up they're still working he's down they move away and he's out when it was much longer than his teammate Jeff Lodi and I walked away as well Rick garage completing his work he is down and away it stops here but like me what is the reason brand-new tires no sense canceling last month it rode in the spine in one swipe event well although some of the pit stops were rather lengthy Rick I don't think anybody got really seriously hurt because of the yellow they closed there's Bobby Elizabeth came very close to hitting a tire wall over there focus firstly 37-minute I'm sorry the quarter number two is going into the SS so Allison is back on track as we were saying I don't think the lengthy picks offs hurt anybody they everybody took their time and are out there now in single file once again that yellow situation it's better to take your time to make sure they've done right really very accustomed now everybody will be able to go the remainder of the race without a pit stop 53 laps completed out of 90 there is there's a little long slide that's when you're you hold your breath pulling your elbows in and everything else right there but he saved it we didn't hit the tyres Bobby Allison also off the course and there is the pace car leading the field around bill Parsons is the first car behind the pace car we'll be back with more in just a moment the Budweiser at the Glenfield slowed because of our third yellow flag of the afternoon this one caused by a spin involving Rusty Wallace it has allowed the leaders to come in for their second and final pit stops of the afternoon and now with the field bunched up it'll be a sprint here when the green flag comes back out we're going to try to talk to Bobby Allison once again Bobby Allison this Bob Jenkins up in the ESPN booth can you hear me Bobby is scared us it looked like you were about to hit the tire wall you saved it what happened eight down into turn one and going go ahead and in to call over gear and the brakes wouldn't stop the car I had to go off the track and go for a big white goose to keep from trying to mess up mom or anything Bobby is a track slick from all of the oil and stuff that's been laid down this afternoon yeah the track is a little bit slick but the time said to be sand really good now always thought race nice with me Bobby last time we checked before these penstocks you are running a taint position is the car okay and do you have a shot of winning this thing well the car is driving pretty good to be am I'm pretty good that we're just not as quick today as we ought to be looking good luck the rest of the way we'll keep an eye on you Thank You Bobby Allison and a synopsis of how his race is going still under yellow here with the Jeff bodean the leader and in second position is Neil Bonnett third is Tim Richmond for this Darrell Waltrip and in this position unofficially at the moment is Ricky run so we'll take another break during this yellow and come back with more from Watkins Glen New York well we talked about the fact that they've had their second series of pit stops but can they go the distance without another stock Jack what about it well we talked to Harry hide the crew chief on Tim Richmond's car he said we wish we had two more laps they're not going to be able to go the distance they don't think they said it's marginal we checked with Junior Johnson down on this end he said it's marginal for them as well they've been huddled all during this caution trying to determine just how far they can go they're going back to green flag racing whether it'll be back in the pits or not nobody knows right now the green flag comes out once again and the race is on Jeff bodean as your leader he goes to the inside it passes Tommy Riggins now Tommy was on the lead lap in 16th position but he now chose a lap down he is on the lead lap but almost about to go a lap down with Jeff bodean we have 15 cars now on the lead lap and Jeff Bodine is pulling away from everybody else once again are you level too far along with see some real racing here going on because we heard us maybe a few sprinkles out on the backside and get those dark so these guys can be helped to try to skim the Oh bottom end and darrell waltrip running behind the leader jet but i yeah it has got a little darker and we have the racetrack laughs there is some concern that this thing could develop into a full-fledged rain who might have to stop even and perhaps in addition to that boat Modine although he has led for happy will try to see if they have as much as Geoff Bodine has displayed in the first 60 laps of this race since Richmond he's making a move good move Richmond takes second from Neil Bonnett and now Tim closing in on our leader Geoff Bodine who has not been able to pass bill Parsons and out of the pit area and they also have to pass him Jack in the pit area what's your observations yeah well Rick was talking about the weather and you were alluding to it as well knowing what we do down on pit road about the big question mark about fuel I'd asked Rick Rick as a driver what kind of a decision do you make you see the ominous cloud you question whether you're going to be able to maybe go the distance without another pickup do you drop the hammer and try and take the name now choice to say well the weather's going to hold and I'm going to go the distance and trying to conserve fuel I think these drivers may have a very big headache before the days over try to make up their mind that's gonna be a tough decision to make it's really going to you know the call would have to be just by looking at the cloud in the sky and see what it looks like and if it really gets dark in a very strong campus and raining stand on it try to go up front just in case of death they would like to drive to do each and every one of them you said we don't want to bring them back into the pit for more fuel so they need to do whatever is necessary to make that car [Music] well Neil Bonnett and darrell waltrip are involved in a real dog fight here bonnet right now leading Waltrip [Music] they are going on a tooth and nail they've had a good tight battle going over Junior Johnson cars battling for position out on the racetrack and Tim Richmond is at this point showing that he would very much like to see if he can pass Jeff bodean they come down the straightaway here that is again bill Parsons in the lead [Music] behind him and this that's for third position that number 29 machine there is being driven by George and here we are inside our saviors car once again last report was the confident put in about 15 collision other problems that have like him there were a lot of people going into this race based on Al seniors qualifying performance in this car knowing that he has a lot of Road racing experience in Indy cars thought that he had a real shot at this but it doesn't appear as if it's going to happen there is George Fullmer now that is sandwiched between Neil Bonnett and they're all crippled from having us [Music] the essence quarters number two and three a lesser senior is in the pit area in that number 88 machine our in-car camera and the problem may be a gearbox problem there he is Jack arute perhaps you can uh Caitlin music gearbox problem they have lost second gear and third gear and now they're in danger of losing fourth gear as well Buddy Baker the crew chief told me just moments ago when it rains on our parade it rains on heart a tough break for a blind run by the Crisco snowmobile and by how unser senior he's done a terrific job here today but it looks like it may be - Tiffany for the team he's taking his goggles off I think this momentarily we'll hear the kill switch gentlemen it's over her car number 88 for the first time in many many years but is not going to come away with the victory we watch this battle down the straightaways we also update you on our 28:58 update the American League baseball scores that is a Jeff bodean and Tim Richmond [Music] League baseball scores now don't forget the following our auto race from Watkins Glen New York the lentil and wiffle didn't rematch into vulnerable finals and of course our sportsmen beyond at seven o'clock you also have a contest going on back for the Flex position between the number forty-three STP Pontiac Richard Petty here's a pretty good that is Tommy Riggins at number 69 the number 69 machine well myself a penny there but he at the moment has fixed position they learn heart and Dale has really not been a factor in this race at least to this point the top five times at the latter moment Neil Bonnett Darrell Waltrip and Ricky Rudd six is petty seventh is Earth art 8 is Rusty Wallace who despite numerous problems is still on the lead lap into comedy and a car spinning their Shepherd I'm unbelievable Geoff Bodine who had a huge lead at one point until the most recent yellow and who was Richmond him off course and then again a spell disaster for Jeff bowtie English trust me pretty hard but did it look like there in the last laughter so he was starting to get little bit about distance between hippocampus company pretty hard to do it so now the lead is turned over to Tim Richmond and Neil Bonnett goes into second position this will be a real story of these with all the experience recently Midnight's position is Bobby Allison and his Betty Parsons 11 is Bill Elliott wealth is mortgages Bobby Hillin jr. the winner of Talladega 14 is rookie Mike Waltrip who is currently the leader in Quincy and Winston which of the year points in 15th position is another 7th car of Kyle Petty and then in an update market at the moment [Music] of course allowing the lead to be taken over by the rest of Hill there the Bobby Allison Benny Parsons and Geoff Bodine who is now back in about 11 body washed that much in just that little cement Richard Petty is continuing to smokin it get any worse and I think the worse on different parts of the track that could be a problem later marry consisted with a very good ride for return Betty twenty-one years ago five of course at Riverside victory was in 1977 this was his one thousand and fourth career start here at rivers they're here at Watkins Glen early 14th in the point standing there is the leader Tim Richmond the National Mall hire no consistently good here today we'll be right back [Music] a car off the course that is Mike Waltrip from Owensboro Kentucky and the Hawaiian Punch Pontiac the car off course but he drives it back on no major problem we'll see if it necessitates the yellow I don't think it's going to turn number one and Mike is back under way so no yellow now Richard Petty and number 43 has been smoking we have noticed in the last few laps word is that he might be black flag will watch for him to come around to see apparel kinder does give it to him way out for me be staying about the same but you know it could be getting a lot of oil on the windscreen to the cars behind him or something like that making the Trifield slippery also well he did not get the black flag so they're going to allow him to stay out there he is right behind they learn hard and he was running ahead of her just the last couple of laps and right behind Richard Petty he had smoked a wallet seven car he's also been smoking a little bit there - all it says - so it's blows up running together there that is fifth sixth and seventh Earnhardt the petty six and Rusty Wallace ricky rudd number 15 to have a very good race here and they're not getting spread out by anything and the leader Tim Richmond is being locked at the trial the backstretch the end of the backstretch at about 152 miles an hour so he has slowed down a little bit compared to one day running earlier but [Music] and the lead and about a couple of second lead on and the black flag this is being displayed it is being displayed to Richard Petty harold kinder waving the black flag telling Richard penny that he must come in to the pit area to have that car checked over to see if it is indeed leaking fluid Richard because he has been very consistent today look very very good I'm sure you've experienced this before reckless act like you hate to see that black flag you know even though it is smoking or oiling or whatever you hate to see it but everything is working as you're still running if it's bad that the cars but anyway they don't fight it don't going to hate defeat that black players running well and you can see they learn are making a gesture to Richard as it to say I assume that you saw the black flag and will be leaving the race course hopefully if Richard does life like but sure you will penny of course from Randleman North Carolina currently 14th in the this year's been a flurry earlier in the year at the 500-mile race in Colombia name at good villages recently resident yes he is its most recent best finish was a six at riverside he's in the pit area checker rooted in the STP Pontiac Renteria Richard Petty they go to the back of the car in the truck where they drive subsystem is located they check that it seems to be clean and dry so that's not words we do they look underneath the car they can't pull and they send him back in and you can see that Dale Inman is pointing right now to the ground saying there isn't anything on the ground we're not making anything I'm going to jump in here and see if we can get a word with data to see what the problem is Dale there certainly didn't seem to be anything on the ground any thought was coming from Jackie I don't know I mean it's definitely smoking but they might be a little bit getting on the brake rotors or something like in there terrible hot like an oven smoking laughter the story - tough break especially on a road course you can maybe tell them where you think it's coming from I know that they've been cigars and smoke all day but that wounded that they're women well they're going to have to live with it a tough break for Richard Petty yes also a tough call for the NASCAR officials to really throw that black flag there is any beer small car number 64 is off the track and receiving some assistance from quarter workers dears wall on that number 64 machine the sunny King Eddie from San Antonio Texas trying to get him restarted but I don't think they're going to have much success so we'll continue to watch Richard Petty to see if that smoke continues and whether or not he can build up the the position that he had at one point there is Jeff bodean who's also continuing to try to thread his way back doing all real well back up to eight but still a lot of cars between him as the leader and long race track beside I'm spinning while he was in the lead and has been trying to catch back up everything Tim Richmond continues leader bonded second Waltrip third Rudd fourth and Dale Earnhardt now running in fifth position Oh dine as we said in New York younger once again we see the Battle of the junior Johnson cars and they've switched positions in the last lap and a second he just waved to it when he came off the court little friendly wave there in the Darrell went around the open-toe we have a problem in a many almost making contact with him I don't think there was any contact it sure was close so now yeah now this will bring everybody in for a pit stop and it was take the possibility of everybody running out of fuel with just a couple laps to go petit is back underway but we now watch the leaders to see if they choose to make a pit stop and we are sure that they will this is our fourth caution period of the afternoon there is Tim Richmond slowing down more and a parent pitstop instead for Great Britain jump what I don't get [Music] Tim Richmond moving off of quarter number seven and entering pit road the leader is in the biblical once again to Jack arute all the pit road in Richmond is the first one to come to pop next one to this second and that bill bonnet is come to have all three of them good side tires they're also cooling down the brakes are on the right side crips is just about complete now they're going to go to four tires scarf likewise Daniel bodice car touch of Richmond on free cruise parking almost in unison taking a look here will be here to welcome it down to a curse and we welcome it and it'll be did Richmond taking a third so the junior Johnson team does its work the junior Johnson team does its work and get their drivers out front at the desert [Music] fitler you guys take a pass in the pizza well we say it time and time again and I know people get tired of hearing it but indeed a race can be lost in the scenario that could be the situation that we face here this afternoon as Bobby Hill ins car is still stalled on the race track this will necessitate a wrecker to the area to get it off meanwhile it's going to be Darrell Waltrip leading this race Neil Bonnett in second and Tim Richmond third as the result of pit work we'll be right back in just a moment [Music] still under caution here at the Budweiser at the Glen at Watkins Glen International but some problems maybe with a big question mark developing on darrell waltrip after that brilliant fitting on the Windham in the lead Jeff Hammond calls the shots here along with junior Johnson and Jeff right now they're concerned on fire they left to go to the we go back to brace all you got to do is you stay out front but the concern let us tell you is they put four tires on and it developed a vibration they have tried to shape the car down to determine whether it was a problem with the tires or not their consideration is that it is not a problem they're electing it looks like right now to keep them out on the racetrack because it is 17 laps to go Jeff it looks like you're going to not make the call to bring it back in no Jack it was just a feeling that he had when he first took off by the pitch he saw those lemon gas and at the same time he had a little bit of a bounce and the tires sometimes with a new set of tires you have to sling them out a little bit and he just you know right now he's so intense and everything is so important you might say he's feeling every little nick and hook in the card if it creeks the wrong way he feels it so whenever he feels that you need Holly's ending something's wrong something wrong so you know just had to come back down and then we went back to everything and everything's fine Neal look the car over force at the same time so we're in good shape we're ready to go racing well this is when something that ought to be pointed out gentlemen that's when cream rises to the top rather than making a momentary judgment and bringing the car back in during this caution and losing all that valuable ground they said Darrell stay out there take it down there is public caution laps let's find out what the problem is before we overreact put four new tires on and give away everything that we gained during that pit stop cream definitely does rise at the top good point in Rick and also a point to make here is that I'm sure you can relate to this late in the race you're leading you do feel every possible thing that can go wrong with the car oh you do do that that's exactly like they said everything is magnified at that point in time you just you know you're almost expecting something to happen possibly so you really cause a pigeon open at home but that can make you look for things that aren't there well Bill Elliott is leader on this race [Music] we assume that he's simply gambling that he can't go the rest of the different distance without stopping full fuel in p-panty very definitely has a shot at winning this race Bill Elliott is our fifth leader of the afternoon although we have had a total of eight lead changes yellow is still out because of a spin involving Bobby Hillin back with more from Watkins Glen after this [Music] yellow flag still is out at Watkins Glen International as the debris and the dust is being swept off the track from a spin involving Bobby hill and not a serious accident by any means there were a lot of interesting developments during this most recent series of pit stops let's take a look at what happened here comes Tim Richmond in and watch how close he and Darrell Waltrip come you know Tim swinging in the pits have kind of point the nose of the car out so it'd be a little better lined up to be able to take off out of the pit once he stops and in turn that forces Darrell to have to move his pit out a little bit as he comes in but then also with Darrell being out that kind of blocks Tim Logan as he comes out and as they complete the work on the Darrell Waltrip machine you can see the crew encouraging him to get out of there and he stands on the gas and moves out ahead of both Tim Richmond and his teammate Neil Bonnett now the signal has been given we'll go back to green and one more lap before we do that though let's go down to Jack arute talking about the strategy Phil Elliott team they pitted back on lap 55 they feel no problem we've got plenty of fuel to go the distance they weren't kind of like The Tortoise and the hare just catching a little bit each time getting back to the front but now they may have another problem developing and they were all craning their necks the car came by to survey the situation on the right front tire there were some reports and maybe that tire was going down they could really anything from this vantage point but from some spotters around the racetrack reporting back to NASCAR there have been some indications that a tire could be going down on your leader Bill Elliott only time will tell but as far as fuel consumption they say it screen all the way then they won't be back here looked at another problem well if he pitted on lap number 55 that would mean that there are 35 laps till the end of the race and that's just about the maximum that these guys think they can can't go so yeah it will be interesting to ZB as enough fuel and also people an eye on that tire situation well we've got just what I need to pit down Geoff Bodine has come in for a stop they didn't have to put up on that car it's back under power now but things have gone sour here for Geoff Bodine - the last few laps he led a great portion of this race there are 15 cars by the way Geoff is the 15th car right now laughs running in 14th position by the way is Mike Waltrip than Richard Petty and 1312 miss Borden Jeffers in position oh I'm sorry number seven kyle petty would be in Bobby Allison is 9 Ricky Rudd is 8 seventh and any parson fairly consistent racing school and Stevenson GTO races has apparently made off for him this afternoon Rusty Wallace is in sixth Dale Earnhardt fifth fourth is Tim Richmond third Neil Bonnett second is of course the number 11 car of Darrell Waltrip in in the lead at the moment is Bill Elliott with 14 laps ago and it seems that the green line will be coming out here at just a moment cars come off of quarter number seven or feast approach quarter number seven quick Italian the cars come off the corner the pace car dives to the inside the green line comes out and we're racing once again now let's see what their wall turf does let's see if that higher vibration is going to be a problem for him yet he can pass Elliot he held them up for the first turn a problem like that you can kind of sneak up on a little bit that percent to the corner just to make [Music] Richmond would like to take over the Neil Bonnett but now ten balls the pills slightly in the quarter number four and now on to the back strand Eliot leads it down Darryl Waltrip is right behind him here comes Tiffany but on the inside upfield wanted to try to take that third spot he's going to do it and go inside they learn artemiy wasn't able to pick up the spot but in Richmond Neil Bonnett is more than Earnhardt in fifth position now we have a change of leader as Darrell Walker Vallely attend darrell waltrip goes back into the lead and lead change of Tim Richmond can make a move on Phil as they head down the straightaway this is one of the areas of the racetrack that we have seen most of the tanks going in the corner number one inside we almost touch the distraction spot running here so it is Tim Richmond [Music] we'll take a look at the lead change once again as Walter chose the outside to pass bill Elliot he must have really got a good Drive you know coming off the turn five there to be able to pull out around him that early in the straightaway it wasn't well he is not pulling away from the rest of the field by any means a matter of fact in Richmond is right on his back bumper [Music] manage that Waltrip asset Bill Elliott getting a little high that mortar hitting the car just a little bit sideways but he did not lose that position [Music] we're in the closing stages of this 90 lap race here at Watkins Glen new your head look it's in Richmond right up on the back bumper up Darrell Waltrip tim has had such a great season seven races if you throw out a 15th place finish that he had in Michigan he has had a second a second a first a first a first and a second he has been really competitive all race long he was our pole sitter it has a problem at the beginning of the race with the engine missing he went over to the backup ignition system he has been leading or hot on the tails of the leader ever since that point Tim Richmond in second position he and Darrell Waltrip are really having a battle here with a closing stages at the Budweiser with the glass you know the Elliott here he didn't make a fist out there so he doesn't have the phrase tires on and he'd just be kind of trying to hold on here until these guys wrote the tires off a little bit and leave beloved it goes into the lead temperature becomes our test lead change of the afternoon only five liters but we have had ten lead changes Richmond begins to stretch it out just a little bit on Darrell Waltrip Waltrip and Tim Richmond you recall battled almost side by side to the final checkered flag at Riverside earlier this year a race that wall from one but it was a close battle with River men there is a kind of a duel here this afternoon on the road course they crossed the stripe once again in complete lap number 79 we've got 11 more circuits to go there's a good look at temperatures who gained some experience on this track driving in Indy cars heard him say before the race began you like to see Indy cars run here Rick how would I enjoyed this job very fun here's a good track for us [Music] in the nice area blurry besides boys enjoy company it really is one of the most beautiful areas I think here United States there's Finger Lakes system and there are tremendous rock formations and gorges and waterfalls that type of thing could make this area just unbelievably beautiful they're running in single file now Dale running for the spot right now it is Earnhardt in fifth position and Rusty Wallace in very close together out there racetrack great job coming back you know earlier the smoking the flat tire [Music] really working a little more our luck award of the day would have to go to rest let this rate experience numerous problems but through all of this has remained on the lead lap man position go file down the straightaway once again bill Elliot still running it third there's the O monitors roughly wallet are part of that record he of course is the current Winston Cup points leader but he is only just a few ahead of Darrell Waltrip and Tim Richmond is at second position 61 points behind Dale Earnhardt is Darrell Waltrip Tim Richmond is third in the point standings Dale Earnhardt best finished recently with laughs for the conclusion of this event now we'll see if Tim Richmond can hang on for the win after this [Music] with Rick Mears and jackaroo this is Bob Jenkins back at Watkins Glen International race course where we are about nine while in Winston Cup race it is Tim Richmond who is in the lead followed by Darrell Waltrip then Bill Elliott Neil Bonnett running fourth and Dale Hurd Hart in fifth position you know we were going for a record when we began industry today if there was going to be a new winner this year it would be the 13th different driver to win a Winston Cup race in 1986 there has been 12 different winners to date this season that the ties modern-day record three winners in 83 and in 84 and here in 86 winter it will set a record for Winston Cup racing now both the enrichment and their Walter have won in competition this year and so has Bill Elliott but when we get back to the fourth place runner that is Neil Bonnett has not won on the Winston Cup trail this year so he at the moment is the most likely to perhaps continue this string of 13 different players now we have a battle between our nen vomit the straightaway into turn number one and Earnhardt still without inside advantage as they he's really challenged on both leaning on four yard slide sideways monitored by there is a pretty good good fellow Indian drug leave a little bit of racetrack between now Rusty Wallace wanted to make a move on Dale Earnhardt but a slower car got away and rusty had to pull back into formation they come off of corner number seven and complete another lap this is the completion of black number 82 eight more Lacs to the finish little bit of racetrack now between first and second Elliott painting back judge on him he did not make doctoring the that we had stretches fuel mileage to the finish of the race and Neil Bonnett with a little entire small car led up with that way and that's Mike Waltrip who has spun some dirt onto the racetrack it's the second time this afternoon that mike has tasted the grass and has spun off the course this occurs in corner for three I believe at any rate Waltrip is back under his own power it is not necessitate a yellow feed has had some contact with the retaining wall if not in that incident earlier in the day cause the back into that cars banged up there once again are the first two in Richmond and Darrell Waltrip the mold for this race is Darrell Waltrip started this race the second starting position so we have the drivers who started first and second still running seven more laps to go in this race our history book of great they started running car one cars man we have Kyle Petty who is gone for assault bill but it's only a momentary off-course excursion and he's back out there did kick up a little vest reading perhaps the visibility problems some of the drivers at back of him the Kyle is okay and it started racing Formula one back in 1961 here at the clinic higher in one hand way he'll for about the next six years Jackie Stewart's our ESPN colleague one here at once planted formula one in fact this is the place where he retired after Francois severe was killed in 1973 the last one duration we know here and now we have they are really putting a challenge on it for the battle for position coming off that corner to get a run at even it looks like it's working let's see what Dale does he's down to the inside of the racetrack headed for turn number one we've seen numerous passes here today and we see it otherwise Bernard goes into fifth five and Rusty Wallace I think wanted a little bit of that Neil Bonnett cartoon at the industry way but he could not make then Mike Waltrip continues to have problems he is obviously experiencing some serious problems and Bobby Allison is also often the same owners of a piece of oil in that area Mike Waltrip slides off course and quite behind him Bobby Allison but both are going to get back on track and continue with the race avi Allison was running in the eleventh position an incident occurred and Mike Waltrip was wanting 15 so it was a couple of cars on the lead lap but neither one of them in contention for the win here now the leader the first yet Philip and he passed easily by the adrenaline and now also by Darrell next time also those brought to this lady to get too hot like that four more laps to go it is a dogfight between Tim Richmond day-olds rather Darrell Waltrip very cute Carly the bet is now longer Darrell Waltrip [Music] definite move up in 2014 Richmond if he can add to his total here this afternoon he is currently 185 points behind the Weathermen Cup points leader Dale Earnhardt but this will certainly add to his total although he won't gain a whole lot because Walter who's in second place at the point Andy leaders important [Music] [Applause] to manhandle that race car on the fire lighting it around the corners has driven up Mary consisted and good race Jeff bodean by the way is back in the pit area [Music] for that Levi's Garrett Chevrolet in the pit area after having drinkable another lap clicks off there now three to go and it's a two point one nine seconds advantage to point one nine seconds Richmond middle hair with Elliott looking for that third position third at the moment but a part is right there to make the challenge and it looks to me like that Tim Richmond is slowly pulling away from Darrell Waltrip yes and if they can put Tim Richmond could put some slower cars between and L meant Waltrip there will be greater advantage to happen Tim it appears is pulling away down into the about a two and a half second lead in full-time them next time grab to see if that increases Bill Elliott and their Dale Earnhardt Matalin here for that third spot tight coming off there this could be the time maybe it was mine you're sure they don't have to talk about it there's a large grouping in over position and he's off the track but look at that late-breaking we'll do this God holiday momentarily but did a great job of driving the judge two more laps to go the next time around it will be the white flag Lords in Richmond here they are Earnhardt and Bill Elliott more 35 Earnhardt now being able to pull away from Bill just a little bit it may still be concerned with the fuel although he would be going for it at this point with Lexington and Ellis to look at all the loose over the last couple laps two guys really been not not fit for tire the tire did he slip and slide but you got to wonder if that wasn't really a pretty smart move for Bill when he decided not to come in on that last yellow flag oh yeah I think it was the two laps to go now art now begins to put some distance between himself and Phil Elliott it appears in Richmond has at least one slower car between himself and Darrell Waltrip so it's looking pretty good one Sam Richmond here he comes on the Budweiser ethic legs here they come down the straightaway it's a 12.15 second advantage for Tim Richmond if Darrell Waltrip is going to make the boot he's going to have to do it soon he goes to the inside and passes George Fullmer a slower car look at Earnhardt get sideways coming off of corner number one but he keeps that third spot these guys are working here they're working in Richmond is pulling away it appears on Darrell Waltrip Tim Richmond will be winning his fourth race of 1986 and that will be the most wins that any driver has coming in Dale Earnhardt had three wins Tim Richmond had three wins Jeff but I had two but Tim will be all alone now should he put together this victory here this activity has about a half a lap to go down the backstretch for the final time it's still about a one-second lead for ten rigidly but [Music] very very strong [Applause] [Music] it's a little bit sideways the back tires off the course but it doesn't make a difference Tim Richmond has won the Budweiser at the clay finishing second was Darrell Waltrip and third place went to Dale Earnhardt fourth to Bill Elliott and unofficially in fifth place was Neil Bonnett in an outstanding performance here this afternoon after having serious questions about his physical ability to go this entire distance 29th at Neil Bonnett finishes fifth six unofficially was Rusty Wallace seventh was Ricky Rudd eighth was Benny Parsons ninth Kyle Petty and tenth was Richard Petty the Betty's finished unofficially in ninth and 10th 11th with Lorna Shepherd 12th was Bobby Alice despite agricultural racing late in the event and 13th was Dave Marcus in car number 71 Tim Richmond from Dooley North Carolina by way of Ashland Ohio has won the Budweiser at the glance the 100,000 or so fans have gathered here this afternoon begin to leave as they have seen a tremendous Winston Cup race here at the Glen the winner Tim Richmond second Darrell Waltrip third was Dale Earnhardt fourth Bill Elliott fifth Neil Bonnett the six through ten place finishers Rusty Wallace in a tremendous gallant battle this afternoon Ricky Rudd finishes seven Benny Parsons a consistent eight Kyle Petty a couple of off-road excursions but he finishes ninth and Richard Petty after a black flag and a couple of other problems finishes in 10th position so an excellent race Rick since it was you know I got to come in these guys these did a tremendous job on the track today you know I think a lot of people expected some a little more traction and with attrition and that kind of thing and it didn't really happen and just you got to come in the drivers and the crews for the great job all of them did you're absolutely right I think well of course a lot of this is brought about by the press who say oh there's going to be a lot of crashing and the the guardrails are just too close to the racetrack you can slide off at Riverside and slide the sand and never hit anything but they were predicting some perhaps serious crashes here at Watkins Glen but it just didn't happen and it was it was a great race Justin was well let's go down to talk to our winner of the Budweiser at the gland and the winner's circle interview is being brought to you by Goodyear Eagles you either have Goodyear Eagles or you need them here's Jack arute well who says who says Road Racing zaboor congratulations Tim root so that was one whale of a run I tell you what John there was lots of guys out there we we held back a little bit there for a while just make sure we had the brakes to be able to race them at the end and the cold were great I mean hairy hide and whole Folgers crew they you know they're making me look real real good and is they're making a lot easier on me too you know to win races and you know I I can't take much credit because they're the ones that put up this equipment under and Rick Hendrick and I won't say hi to Rick's mom down in Charlotte she was sick and my sister and while in Iceland the whale's rib down in Deerfield but they're going crazy now anyway hey listen for wind now you're the guy that kaledin you've got four Earnhardt head three you've moved into the leadership role what about the Winston Cup points case you said all along that we're going to be in it by the end of the year this has got to make it one more mark even though you gained just a few spots over Waltrip than the rest of in Earnhardt and the rest of them well you know they some drivers seem to think that the media and the paper and hey why there you go now there's a guy Harry hide it is absolutely proud Harry you know at the beginning of the year you said that Tim Richmond was really going to be the cat to be dealt with now how do you feel about it well I think he's great I think it's great I couldn't say enough for him you know he's run a beautiful race all day kept his cool run smooth and you know just proved he's a champion he's a champion all the way well I'll tell you we've got Rick Hendrick here also and this is a guy that we normally don't get to see in victory lane Rick a two-car operation you've won with both of them but this is the cat that's really getting the job done look what we did we brought the old man out of retirement how much that's an old guy Danny Grove a heck of a race and we couldn't be happier and I'm just so proud of Harry and tender this year and I don't know how many to go where he said he was gonna win eight I think you can you win 80 ah I promised you I'd win six so I got two more to go what do you think about that Richmond well I'd take it but also the guys back in the engine shop margrave's everybody I you know this thing ran like a top all day and I just I'm just glad to be here but what you talked about before about the championship thing a lot of drivers think they're talking in on this thing and in the newspaper something has something to do it on the track with this thing right down here is going to do you know I think you're talking will and if it can beat them it will and if it can't and I like sir - well Richmond says put your foot where your mouth is gentlemen well he didn't gain much as far as points as concern ease villain 30 gain 15 on Earnhardt still a hundred sixty points behind in the battle for the Winston Cup we'll be right back back at Watkins Glen New York and look at our race summary erased that Tim Richmond won he led 28 out of the 90 laps to margin of victory was one point three seven seconds time two hours 24 minutes and 56 seconds Geoff Bodine led the most laps with 33 the average speed of the race was 90 point four six four miles an hour we had four overall caution periods a total of 19 laps 13 cars finished on the lead lap there were ten lead changes among five drivers and we have a tremendous day of racing a week from today we're going to start it all off with the Austrian Grand Prix the next event in the Formula One schedule for
