Stadium in Detroit as we await the start of Game three of the 1984 World Series hi everybody I'm Vin Scully along with Joe Garagiola interesting pattern has developed the Tigers and their postseason games have jumped out in the front and for San Diego in each of their postseason games they have been behind does it tell you anything about the ball clubs well the obvious it tells is like Sparky said you better get these Padres very very early because the middle relief is very strong and it as far as the Tigers it means they come right out of the box in a hurry they come right at you Sparky didn't have a chance to use his middlemen during the end of the year very much and didn't get them until the second game of the World Series but now he's caught up so both clubs are about ready and remember that they have not used a goose as far as the Padres are concerned which has to be one of the big shots of the series thus far well it just shows you how strong that mill relief has been and apparently a bad hop will not figure in the game tonight but then again you better not take anything for granted anything can happen I don't care how soft the infield is although it looks great well let's beat the players on both ball clubs and for that introduction we'll go to our public address announcer here at Tiger Stadium john bell at this time we'd like to introduce the participants in the Company of New York in a former minor league pitcher mr. Arab berbarian sings our National Anthem [Applause] see [Applause] what's Oprah [Music] lastly whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous all right boy the ramparts we watched were so good [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Oh the star-spangled Oh [Applause] all of us in the feathers all the pomp and circumstances are over with the players lining up on the foul lines and kind of pawing at the dirt like nervous thoroughbreds and we are to that moment we'll be back with the starting lineups and get this one underway right after this Tigers Tigers stadium is the weather it really feels for like a spring night the beginning of something rather than a fall night the end of summer and maybe in a sense we have just begun each team having one one as the Tigers take the field and Milt Wilcox getting things ready on the mound Joe what's in your scouting report on milk well he's got a he throws a cut fastball Ben he holds a little bit off center it looks like a slider when it comes up there he's got two good curve balls I mean by that he throws a slow curveball a big breaker and he's got one it'll really bite he's got the split-finger fastball and everybody on the tiger pitching staff has he'll throw plenty of those Roger Craig just simply talked him out of his slider he used to throw his slider but he got him in trouble he said forget about it let's try the split finger he tried and he liked it and he's a good fielder probably second on the ball club to Mars base running has been so in the series and there was a feeling I believe on the San Diego ballclub that they could run against Wilkins but more and more as they studied him they find out that he has improved his move considerably bruce fremming in shirtsleeves we'll give you an idea how warm it is and you have some numbers to back up that well with the nine attempts of five of them were caught Lance Parrish is really throwing well and Roger Craig said his move is above average but let's look for some more pitch outs tonight because the Wiggins is going to come out running they're not going to change their game pattern and Sparky's not gonna change his the first ball ceremony taking place and it was honored to John Fetzer the sole owner of the Tigers until he sold the ballclub to Tom Monaghan a year ago the 83 year old mr. Fetzer a radio pioneer recognized as one of baseball's true statesman areas right there our heartiest congratulations to him Bluebonnet is happy Chandler barber Commissioner and Commissioner Peter Ueberroth define see that big K for Kentucky Alfred happy Chandler good under a hall-of-famer and rightly so while we have a moment we might tell you about Tiger Stadium which is one of the oldest ballparks they've been playing baseball on this site since 1900 Navan field at Bennett Park and it was also Briggs stadium and in 1961 officially became Tiger Stadium it's 3:40 down the left-field line 365 des left center but it the deepest centerfield for the Yankee Stadium is forced 17-2 senator be 4:32 let's enter so for 40 inch centers and air for cause back to 325 now [Applause] and once again for Wiggins and the grass here it's no higher than ordinary and I say that because in talking to their pet groundskeeper here Frank Fenwick frank says it's an inch and a half high it gets it a little higher in July and August when it's hot but he said it's nothing abnormal about it and we're ready to go look where Marty Castillo is trying to put a chokehold on Alan Wiggins Wiggins has been quoted as saying it doesn't bother me I'll just fun to the shortstop and if you have a memory you might go back to the 1976 World Series when Sparky managed against the Yankees he did the same thing against Mickey rivers and rivers froze there's a sign out left-center field it's distracting the Wiggins and I think that that's what he's complaining about the one directly behind lemon you saw Chet that white slash out there left-center field that's the problem and here we go it doesn't bother but he's thinking about it he says I may try to hit one that way to stop all this and if I do drag it out drag it between the pitcher and first base well that's the guilty sign one ball and no strikes [Applause] 484 Wilcox was notorious for midseason injuries he pits through this year despite a painful shoulder cortisone shots the ulcer took DMSO he owns horses and it works on horses he hoped that would work on him and that's it bear [Applause] and then to second base goes Alan wig he said before the game by him so it didn't take him long to do that and he had to base it on his mind a minute he in it though the Tigers are burned and herndon tried to backhand the ball in the bullpen and couldn't do it but this can right out of the glove however with Wiggins speed giving him a double anyway anytime Wiggins gets aboard now he has scored 75% of the time so he's in scoring position already as you take another look [Applause] tony gwynn tryna pick him up with Steve Garvey to follow big bounce of the Wilcox a block to second and a throw to first [Applause] great composure when he forced him to really go back he knew that he was going to take a good look at Wiggins and make sure that he doesn't go to third base watch what he does he's ready to feel his position he says hey I'm going to make sure I'll even fake him back [Applause] and he's got an easy out fine play by Milt Wilcox one away Wiggins holding its second just the start of the ballgame so pull up a chair and stay with us game 3 [Applause] Garbi trying to pick up Wiggins wall one want to know the Padres would appear to be very loose there is always a running gag between Garvey and Terry Kennedy Terry Kennedy said Garvey wanted to get a date with Mary Lou Retton but she wouldn't go out with him because he's too short [Applause] one and the big scene here yesterday when the Padres were working out Kurt Bevacqua was the last man on the field when he went to take batting practice the entire Padre team came to the infield and gave him a wave Wiggins to third and a hit and run foul ball wiggins had a great jump Garbi trying to drive it and filed it off to the right wiggins remember in the low- stole as many as a hundred and twenty usually when you run from second base you're asking permission from the third base coach with design where you say I think I can steal it and it also tells the coach that you're about 80% sure because you certainly don't want to get thrown out because you are in scoring position Wiccans had I'm sure more than 80% chance of stealing he had that base stolen be sure it did 1 & 2 the count is Steve Garvey Whittaker trying to birddog Wiggins at 2nd base Wilcox hi this year in strikeouts he had 8 against Toronto he can bring it and here now is break Nettles the Wiggins doubles Gwynn hits a comebacker Darby strikes out and nettles trying to pick him out [Applause] I've been pitching medals very carefully with 20 home runs and he's walked three times in his a short porch here [Applause] top of the first inning two down Alan Wiggins opened up with a double and he's still there [Applause] the Padres are trying to grasp the initiative they haven't been able to do it yet in postseason play remember they have trailed in all of their games just as the Tigers have led in all of theirs and here was a chance to break the pattern to a No [Applause] big change curveball what big junk that is with our centerfield shot to get a pretty good idea most of the pitches when you see Lance Parrish on the outside part to play nine out of ten times it'll be the fastball inside will be that big breaking curveball you'll see him move that's a ring saw and he missed with it so that's the fourth law [Applause] [Music] yes they are and the batter is another left-hand hitter as Sparky looks on Perry Kennedy dick Williams hoping to see his ballclub get out in front for the first time that's Deacon Jones sitting in front of it [Applause] young man behind him was Kevin McReynolds in what a class act not once moan and what a terrible break he got yeah you're right not being able to play in this series a change curve outside two hours later [Music] and he picked up those two RBIs you remember on an extra-base hit into the right-field corner in San Diego one and all [Applause] by the way the Tigers behind Wilcox Tramell pesty Oh in Lebanon Gibson on the bass bass Alan Wiggins at second Greg nettles at first do I just the start of something on deck is the man of the series thus far Kurt Bevacqua [Applause] and his flying machine one and one Wiggin genitals taking their leads off-speed roll down to Whitaker nice easy [Applause] wanna head to the end of half an inning Padres nothing here come the Tigers 6 395 pounder he's had his share of arm troubles and we'll get into that but first let's check yo scouting report he's pretty much a hard thrower we would be the best way to say it been fastball a slider 90% would be one of the to an occasional curve the key tool hour is his slider if he loses that and it's not working for him he becomes a one pitch pitcher and he'll have a high number of pitches made I mean 19 to seventh inning would be nothing for him Norris imply says there's no in between he's either hittable or he's unhittable he is averaging five walks a game this year which is pretty high in fact only two other pitches in the National were a little higher Bruce beretti McMurtry of atlanta and of course Lauer must grow strength we were talking about his are in 1982 he won 10 of his first 12 decision he had a circulatory the feeling in the end finger of his left hand [Applause] he hit the skids and he's been [Applause] you'd almost be tempted if you were catching the holler out to him watch the first ball because at home Whitaker is known to jump on a pop one in the seats you got to be a little careful and he has led off both games with a hit and first ball swinging a pop fly to Tony Gwynn though they get him by the way it's pretty tough to get Detroit in the first inning they have scored in four the last five games in the first inning in fact putting a stop watch to the game against Ed Wilson lichens first fits the Tigers scored a run in a minute and 55 seconds I mean they come out of the chute snarling Pierce Trammell right now on a great player and those would be the words of Sparky Anderson he had 3:14 he had 14 home runs he's their hottest hitter in the postseason [Applause] one and one [Applause] - basketball have stayed up nettles about even with the bag at third you have Garvey Wiggins Templeton and nettles Martinez Brown and Gwen and Kennedy behind the plate where the Padres stack up with the leather [Applause] two balls one strike ah good fastball he's got to keep the ball down he'll start to flag down get the ball up and that's when he heads for trouble he's a power pitcher he struck out 12 in a game this year against Cincinnati in July he can throw hard but he's also wild and his high he walked seven in a game that he lost naturally [Applause] [Music] where is Kirk Gibson with Alan [Applause] [Music] we were talking about what good moves that Wilcox had we're going to check the scouting report on Lauer he's got a good move he wants some numbers 19 tried at 13 the left-hander at the belt and he's in there Gibson to parade he had 27 home runs during the regular season [Applause] never slowly to sack on the blade channel take second babe goto down in the first-inning and make way for Lance no score even though it's the first Jenny this is one of those situations where Kennedy is after simply saying hey luck got first base open you want to go getting you go getting but be sure he hits your pitch don't be thrown up any room service jobs and he had better worry about lands parish who has hit about 40 points higher against left-hand pitching and against right-hand pitching though with two down Alan Trammell who walked is at second base no score [Applause] one he's gonna have to widen his strike zone I would think then to be able to hit the ball because just watching where Kennedy's given the sign and they're going to give him too much to hit unless it's a mistake and thinking about the on-deck hitter it's Larry Herndon now there you see Hernan right now you want to make sure that you don't give him a good ball to hit because he's going to be crippled shooting right here picking his pitch looking for a particular pitch parish hit 30 home runs 16 against right-handed he fattened up on lefty to a No [Applause] [Music] [Applause] they might let him swing my momma sure he's hittin in that fire catching right now I'd make sure was ball for the Reno the council Lance Parrish it looks like he is most anxious to pull the trigger [Music] whoa write down the fight that doesn't necessarily mean he wanted to hit it I mean he may have been looking for the low inside picture move it out wherever you not only pick a pitch you pick a spot free and oh you really got the picture down boy Sparky really high ball and then here's the 3 1 pitch to Lance Parrish another fastball for ball 4 so in a sense this is following a pattern of Williams has gone through it [Applause] [Music] and here's the hero of the first game coming Larry Herndon here's another one of those watch the first pitch situations too Herndon as hit two home runs in postseason play and both against left-handers Charlie Leibrandt and then of course against mark Thurmond in the series the Lalla nose is a handle with care' label here with Trammell at second Parrish at first two out in the first inning no score [Applause] though he's either down or up which is really wild it's one thing to be wild in one spot but he's been wild up and down and he is walk Trammell in Paris we can't get that ball up and stick stick around very long Larry Herndon [Applause] fouled away carries upstairs one ball one strike [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he is faced four batters he's facing his fifth he's not throwing any off-speed pitches at all [Applause] fastball I Drive to dead center [Applause] there because it's an airport 442 centerfield and the Tigers leave - and at the end of an inning the Padres nothing and the Tigers nothing Bevacqua Martinez and Templeton coming up hey your nails and finally if you hang in there long enough maybe you get a little gold Bevacqua is the d-h and of course there was considerable discussion about whether Jim ylor has hit three home runs this year to Bevacqua was one in fact Bevacqua and summers together have two home runs and Lawler has three Lala was an all-american th at the University of Arkansas but Bevacqua had the hot hand and he's playing second inning no score right if Lawler was allowed to hit and they batted for and they would really be in trouble it would just stop some maneuverability and first aquarium's doesn't want to do that on one account [Applause] and line but right at Whittaker tell you he's got a [Music] Bevacqua it's a BB right at Lou Whitaker one down and Carmelo Martinez coming up we pause briefly for station Asia this is the NBC television network and channel 4 K NBC Los Angeles [Applause] Carmelo Martinez his 250 during the regular year with 13 home run [Music] postseason he has really been struggling and he has struck out eight times in seven games he's been chasing a high fastball it's not a strike I am [Applause] is that big rainbow curve in the what they've been able to do through the youngsters just classic they've been starting the fastball on the inside corner he misses it they keep moving in and until the breaking ball anywhere away from him he's feeling the pressure Deacon Jones was telling me he's getting calls to order Rico from the everybody's calling in tickets and all at it and in it stuff that's all you need with all of media hype to have all the other stuff to know came a little bit by way a third baseman will say milkshake his head by Gary Templeton [Applause] one out second inning no score and [Applause] you know an interesting thing talking about Martinez struggling don't have a hundred RBI man big chopper Powell down 100 RBI man not 1968 [Applause] the Cardinal Jim Northrup at 90 RBIs that year in Mike Shanin at 79 Tigers in repose at least for the moment there's billy cansolo later on will tell you a kind of an interesting story about and Sparky Anderson and the Padre [Applause] 3 & 2 Martinez [Applause] the slow careful [Music] not the fish he could drive struck him out the 3-1 pitch was his best pitch and he pulled it foul watch the rotation on his curveball you can see his twist and he was out in front that means he has struck out nine times already in the World Series and here is Gary Tubman [Applause] actually the talk about the world series I add it and make it Genco season [Applause] Tamlyn hitting 375 he's enjoying looks like gary is all its inside and he's going to give a half of the playfully he'll give it to Wilcox until he's got two strikes he was talking about playing with it himself the other night he had three hits ground ball to the hole Whittaker knocks it down picks it up no play Lou Whitaker trying to flag it couldn't do it and Templeton of course particularly difficult hitting left-handed I asked him as we watched Whitaker try to flag down this base hit that's what he's predator with Templeton is I said what tells you that you are really in the groove hit him he said when I'm pulling the ball and he did that right there he pulled it got a face hit so he feels like he's in the groove Bobby Brown who has had a long series particularly in the second game every time he came up there were people aboard he had a runner at second and he struck out bird hit into a fourth way he had runners at second and third and popped up and they sat him down templeman meanwhile has stolen 8 out of 11 so they'll have to watch him Brown is a switch-hitter [Applause] [Music] Deacon Jones was really doing a job with Bobby Brown and I'm a big fan of Deacon Jones really knows hitting he says the thing that you're doing Bobby I just eavesdrop in the ESMA if I could pass it on he said the ball outside instead of going with you trying to pull it you're strong but you're not that strong he said I'm gonna go with it tonight now give me some hits he's over 11 walk speed line to right Gibson is there [Applause] so a couple of balls in [Applause] [Music] I tell you playing polo is a lot tougher than it looks sure is even though the horses do the running you still can work up a thirst so after chucker 2 we have mr. is drink Light beer from Miller yeah like tastes great and it's got 1/3 less calories than a regular beer and it's less filling and that's important because tomorrow we're gonna try our hand at water polo yeah I sure hope those horses can swim me too like beer from Miller everything you always wanted in a beer unless the NFL plays here San Diego old-world tight end Kevin Winslow fuels the charger attack as they headed to Arrowhead Stadium the NFL he's here Kansas City since taking over at quarterback Todd Blackledge has earned passing grades and directing the Chiefs offense the Chargers battle the Chiefs the NFL plays here my team plays here there's a great story in Chicago this relationship between Jim Frey and Dawn's there were kids together there is also a similar story here in Detroit you're looking billy cansolo billy cansolo and sparky anderson we've played together on the sandlots when they were eight years old they went to high school together would you believe they were on the American League in championship team that won the championship in 1951 they wanted here it was called break state and now they have returned the manager and his coach the manager and his buddy Anderson and Billy consult Sparky took him right out of the barber shop - he was cutting hair and brought him back the great move barbaro garbey poor in the series he played almost everywhere during the and he hit 287 good man to have around [Applause] while her walk to in the first inning and he's behind now to believe [Applause] bow back [Applause] on deck is Chet lemon [Applause] garbade paid his dues three years ago he missed part of the season with a broken jaw suffered when a pitch in the face ground ball to the left Templeton is there [Applause] one down the batter Chet lemon [Applause] in postseason play as one hit in 20 at-bats the hit game in the series so you know how hungry here [Applause] breaking ball missed ball one he's taken extra batting practice because he knows very well he has have been hitting the ball and he took about 45 minutes extra hitting before anybody else ever came out except you and me [Applause] I'm trying to get something started with one out of the second fastball fouled away place got a better chance against left-hand pitching from the right side far as far as numbers are concerned 382 against left-handers 226 against right-handed who tells you something come to the park very early again [Applause] second inning no score [Applause] [Music] now back two and two [Applause] I'll tell you what when we say bow back there will normally be a dramatic pause because when it's fouled back it's in our neighborhood we are right over the catcher you can hear it and I it doesn't take much for the this is where we are and he's right there and I'm right here - or - ball it's a base hit against [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you know the other night when we were talking about Darryl and his wife saw a flying saucer and Pleasance in California yep somebody said to me don't you realize that former coach John Madden lives in he probably saw Madden going out to get the morning paper to go to the train let's try it had a price shirt on and Erica a group [Applause] one four seven in the series you picked up an RBI [Music] hit punch for average during the year but he had 16 homerun [Applause] the Lauer and Evans once you have a good long look at Alex Gramma's then they put a play on because although he's at 16 home runs only one of those came off the left-hander and lemon has good speed he didn't run much at all he was five for ten during the [Applause] boy he's behind on a lot of hitters that's a dangerous way and no strikes to Daryl Evan Tim Waller [Applause] the infield swung way around the first nettles at almost in the hole at shortstop and Gary Chaplin way over to his left to fill up the middle look we're Nettles it he's almost playing short got a good home between first and second oh look at it expression would be punching up the middle [Applause] we came inside on the hands now couldn't handle it and account one ball at once every time I heard that expression bunch him up the middle I think Agustin our heart should catch you with the Yankees bit receiver not much of a hitter once against Connery pointer said punch him around the mound lalla as you can see breaking even with the strike zone one strike to the screen the second he picks it up [Applause] [Music] [Applause] the left arm Kennedy was trying to get in front of it it had to be the fastball because the bounce was one that just came straight back because his breaking ball with the spin would have come towards Kennedy but it just went straight off his arm they lose a chance with the DoublePlay [Applause] [Music] [Applause] lemon tagging [Music] you wonder what advance does for you that's one of the things tag up and run on the that they talked about Mike gets his win because he charges the ball hard the lemon tags and goes to third that puts a little extra pressure there are so many ways to store from third [Applause] little extra heat on Lauer as he works on Marty Castillo [Applause] strike [Music] second on the wild pitch goes no score the second in it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Castillo's only had two at-bats that was in Game one he hit 234 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one two i foul off to the does not appear to be playable back in the seat one thing in this ballpark though being double decked as it is you can't give up on the ball and say it's in the stands it will drift back it'll kind of slide back so it's a good idea to get over there and make sure it's in the stands and Kennedy sure did that though Marty Castillo at the plate no balls and two strikes just take the curveball away from wala with a runner at third of your catcher you worried about him bouncing another one go confidence in you catcher [Applause] basketball where that really comes into play been that kind of with the knuckleballer and that's why the left footballer becomes a luxury when there is a man on third but if you can about that curveball you have to have confidence he's been a blocking both Parrish and Kennedy feet as big as they are good job [Music] hm Oh into fastball 1 & 2 the count to Marty Castillo we're still looking for that breaking ball Markey anderson watching lemmings come down the line from third one engine fastball [Applause] have a picture finally [Applause] Falls and caste you throw mostly fastballs and sliders in that fastball it can still hit it was up and that's a and it is two to nothing [Music] under the heading of online [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Marty Castillo [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one intended he started him with two breaking balls and of course he's working on a left [Music] has been set the Padres doing too fastball fouled away [Applause] lemon was a third he's watching it and he sees it's gone [Applause] and three and toodaloo Lila wants another ball a man with really only one fits he was on very thin ice falling behind so many hitters they presented him with the bill he pitches his normal game when he's really going good he has a good hard slider and a good hard fastball he doesn't have that slider going for him he becomes a one pitch pitcher who's in granted [Applause] unless you toward the bullpen Aloha but he's got that middle relief which has been so strong but it's ironic the starter has to be before the middle relief comes in kidding about it the starting of the Padres have given starting up to the extent that hold them through free runs do we bring in the middle relief court needs of the Los Angeles Times led off his story saying the San Diego Padres should have the starting pitchers throw out the ceremonial first ball and nothing more and here is Alan Trammell line drive [Applause] watch this slide [Applause] the reason I say watch this slide Whitaker was going to make it but by sliding the up fence Kennedy in the ball gets by him and it could have been another base for Trammell didn't get I was backing up Kennedy and many times a runner will do that to you [Applause] Kirk Gibson by the way Lou Whitaker is a hundred and sixty pounds and Lance Parrish checks in at 2:20 and he was a to his six four and two twenty want to know [Applause] [Music] watching where the [Music] his priest at least cried grandma's never hesitate ball gets to the outfield which attract me he could turn Kennedy [Music] [Applause] watching hook Kennedy and I think this is one of the reasons been he's able upend if Kennedy is trying to block it now him hooked his shin guard [Applause] right here the left Pentium as Kennedy reaches and he never does get his hands on good aggressive play by Whitaker which could have meant a face two balls one strike ball three we told you that was going to have message down of the poll panel [Music] Greg Booker gets up then he's up now big right hand [Applause] [Music] Sherry's going to just merely try to settle him down and buy some time for Booker Booker hasn't really pitched that much he's got a good arm he needs to pitch he'll sink the fastball or sail and that's his you see him throw on the sidelines you're impressed sherry what's this big gotta settle down he's trying to buy some time the base on balls as always no defense against that when you look at the fact he has thrown more strikes than boy deceptive what has happened [Applause] we talked about him it's a fastball in his slider he'll throw an occasional off-speed pitch but the hard stuff and that slider has to hooker just hasn't pitched that much and all you can think back was trying to do it on one end had castile Owen to kept throwing basketballs and he was taken out [Applause] ohai change of paces and you start to look at the classified section where he has just put on his reading glasses and no strikes the lands fair Larry Herndon on deck three nothing Detroit in the second inning [Applause] with the fastball and obstruction I'm not that good in math in the year of an election if you projected how many pitches you'd make over nine eighty to be 252 pitches nice going like those kind and sarevok by the way the rock your school - baby don't look at me I'm one okay - and one tool and Ferris he's got a double in an RBI in the series big 33 home runs [Applause] turn one [Music] Lawlor is not only badly [Applause] oil slick 3 and 1/2 and oh and I get to shoot those cripples Billmeyer one of the great managers that played for set us like checking gas tanks with a match now edge of the explosion Korean [Applause] ground ball smothered by Nettles the pieces are [Applause] San Diego like Kansas City has as far as it can go we'll be back after this 3-nothing tiger looking for more in the second inning with two down [Applause] young Greg Booker replacing the starter Tim Lollar [Applause] Whitson [Applause] nettles covers a lot of ground and that's exactly what he wanted to do is not vielen save the run [Applause] did exactly what he started out to do much like the hockey goalie make a save with the bases loaded [Applause] is the son-in-law [Applause] of the San Diego fire [Applause] the last one 1970 by a pitcher [Music] [Applause] Alan Trammell is a third Gibson at second and there's Lance Parrish at first with the infield single 3-nothing Tigers trying to tear it wide open and Booker somehow trying to two and one [Applause] [Music] [Applause] well here's another pitcher pitching behind [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and dick Williams watching his ball club [Applause] it's a one-play that really takes the ballclub down is that gift run and a base on balls once again five walks in this game so far two innings fouled away by Barbara Darb a grounded a short in the second inning so Herndon is at first parish at second Gibson at all four runs charged to the starter Tim Waller [Applause] check swing foul now you might wonder he walks the man walks in and running for GARP a hits the first pitches saying why don't he take a strike you can see what garbage thinking that he's gonna throw a fastball to get ahead of me and he may not have too much on it try to aim it and I'll nail it didn't quite do it nail five this year Oh into [Applause] were introduced the crowd would chant after who cares [Applause] [Applause] or nothing Tigers [Applause] and of course you can't walk away from this inning without thinking to out lemon a third oh and 2 the count on Marty Castillo and Lawler tried to punch him out with bass balls and as the modern-day ballplayer calls it sto just let him up lemon on deck hit the center ground and the Tigers get four and leave three and chase Lala's at the end of two corn [Music] [Applause] the Detroit Tigers have jumped on starting pitcher Tim Lollar before run he's charged with all four sub Millwall Cox going to work leaning on afford another cushion you know it's interesting Wilcox pitching for Sparky Anderson they go back through the pages to the 1970 World Series the Reds took a four to nothing lead Wilcox was relief pitcher for Jim McLoughlin and the Baltimore Orioles got off the deck so we'll see how milk goes tonight a 17-game winner born in Honolulu grew up in crooked oak Oklahoma senator Broken Bow all I know is it's outside of Oklahoma City here's Alan Wiggins opened up the game with a double and they left him and that was a rather ominous start for the Padres Castillo looking bunt as always strike but I think that that tells you what they have to do now you had to take a strike they got to get baserunners and you fall four runs behind and you lose a lot of your weapons no balls one strike [Applause] one and one I would think psychologically for the Padres the live because they had never just been blown out of the game they were down three nothing probably happened in it they were down one nothing and took a two to one lead [Applause] and they gotta make any move at all this is the kid who usually you may have noticed that Wilcox broke towards the first base side of the mound the Tigers would like to take away both alleys if witness is going to try to feed out upon two balls in one strike any lines at the center shaking for a patient and Wiggins is too joana single the Padres can remember Game five against the cub they were down three nothing against the premier pitcher Rick Sutcliffe and they scrambled and beat him who is he Tony Gwynn hit that come back at a Wilcox freezing Wiggins at second base in the first inning that was a good play hit the first pitch when led the league hitting 351 castile plays him short now that's interesting four-run lead and Roger Craig signaler for a throw to first base and look at Lance Parrish they're playing I could say one nothing nothing nothing ballgame he's looking for a pitch outside and with a left-hand hitter at the plate they still want Evans on the bag leading by four [Applause] wanna know the count let's see if parish takes a look at the fence yep he just did ball no strikes breaking ball and [Applause] a year ago the Tigers are set to let Wilcox leave as a free agent they even wrote him a letter thanking him for his years of service of the ballclub and that too [Applause] most of it and almost got Wigan good quick move [Applause] Wiggins went into the back door easily one and one we just did not run again Milt Wilcox he picked off - and only men tried to steal as you pointed out earlier so he has really improved his mood and that's good baserunning on the part of Wiggins I mean he's taking a big enough lead to make it close and again that's telling them hey that four runs you got not enough pal one and one and Wiggins goes and the ball is hitting the right Santa for a patient Wiggins will and Gibson wisely throws it into travel Padres come back on back and Wiggins had stopped at second base and just kept on going once he saw that ball drop I really don't know why he stopped but he made it to third easily [Applause] Gibbons have some idea watch Wiggins he's got a straight steal never once looked and now he's trying to find the ball he sees it he knows it's going to drop and he goes to third surprised at Trammell or somebody didn't give him a deep I was just going to say they've been playing together since 78 would occur and Trammell and if ever a runner was susceptible to a good deal yeah that was a time they could have faked him right out of his shoes well here's Garvey trying to get the Padres back in the game first and third nobody out ball one before the game the Michigan State banned put on quite a show and of course both Garvey and Kirk Gibson played football at Michigan State they had their pictures taken before the game wearing Spartan football jersey slow down and God and he was locked at the plate he had to take it there was nothing he could do the book on Garvey is try to jam him the fastball and then throw the bat breaking ball first and third nobody out one ball one strike the Garvey [Applause] and Canada now with two strikes and you see any more than I have been here's Bert Garvey lays back and drives that ball the opposite field many many times stays behind that Paul will see down in a way maybe in the dirt but a push you have a runner at third fastball hit down to work [Applause] [Music] [Applause] one Detroit Darby's head [Applause] double plays during the regular trouble getting the ball out of his glove win-win-win town there you see it and Garbi to me look like he beat it boy he sure put an extra burst to speed to make right there Harvey picks up an RBI he's really coming down the line look at him stretch out and all good umpires will tell you there's no such thing as a tie that thing about tie goes to the runner forget about it he's either safe or he's out I remember having people tell me the umpire listens while he's looking I'd like to try and make a living listening in this ballpark tonight trying to hear the ball get into the glove while you're looking at the feet nettles walked in the first inning they pitched him very carefully ball one on deck Kerry Kennedy the Tigers four runs for his the Padres one run for him and as we mentioned it was very important I feel for the Padres to score in this inning and they've done it dunno it's both sides of the car and the tiger is that this is the one inning you want to shut them down and say we've got control of you now but when it ballclub with answers be it one or two runs even though you don't take that lead you are telling the opposition something three you know [Music] by four Evans was on the bag holding Wigan and I'm looking but Garvey to Ron and they had the left hand hitting nettles so Evans is off the bag they may just turn him loose too and three-and-oh degree he had a quick look down at Ozzy virtue and at short porch in right field [Applause] just couldn't pull couldn't pull it and that's good hitting experience in the clutch situation keeps you from that anxious moment where you just chase anything rien Juan de Garay opted in the air foul behind the plate [Applause] Caldwell he got you can see his doctor slice away I was looking right down at him on it right away so the Padres had their best man Garvey and nettles in a sweet spot notice he got rid of that mask so he wouldn't trip on it and he's got it all the way the Wilcox really fighting his way out of a spotty first and third nobody out he gets Garvey and a forced nettles to foul out and here's Kennedy [Applause] he has 14 home runs and is certainly capable of hitting the right-field seats it's 325 down the [Applause] [Applause] that some hardest ball he's thrown tonight that was the best fastball loose fluid delivery riveted on the strike zone [Applause] oh and to ground ball over the right side the Whittaker [Music] to fortunate to get one one run to [Music] Tigers for America Houston Texans the pilot is Captain Don in Texas would long America is Helia [Applause] 50 years old George Sparky Anderson is a very practical man he was putting the World Series in his proper perspective he said my daughter Shirley will be married in March win or lose I'll get an up doe to cover the marriage the father of the [Applause] get lemon Marty Castillo it was who had to base hit that started the trouble in the second inning against Lauer remember he was one for 20 in postseason play when he got the base head chopper to third animal [Music] [Applause] [Music] the lemon oh and two and it's four to one they really expect Devens of way wide of sir [Applause] of course after his years in the National aid [Applause] usually when you walk into a ballpark you pick one field and it's usually center field from field where you want your outs and this ballpark we've already had a couple of them chopper file well that's a long way the deepest part of any ballpark in the major league 440 feet [Applause] there was only one ballpark I can remember when there was really no feel where you could fit now is empaths field that's right any fly ball was in play and of course the old poet for 67 light [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] like to see it again here's party Castillo's home [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] lesson [Applause] [Music] did what Williams is going out there to talk to him about is the simple page two and the Spalding diner pitching dog nipple Tosun strikes just rare back with you clips strikes [Music] reminds me when you were catching the Jenner get to that by the manager for your pit selection as if the manager said hey you're calling the wrong Club breaking balls it's a job easy sure he was guilty to tell you I would convention to say that the toughest thing for catching is not throwing blocking the plate is finding out the pitchers best pitch that day and more catches some pitchers of the showers and hitters again somebody said to Kennedy to catch enough pitches Wanda Castillo [Music] play Sparky trying to stay away from that DoublePlay and he does two balls the outside part to play you see Castile get the bat on it and hooker top players not that easy because he got a you can see gotta be really stretching to keep that foot on the back [Music] though Castillo protects the runner gets him over Luke lied to write and walk but that was against Lauer now he's looking at Bukit he's about an 85 point better hitter against right hand pitches not to bowed he is 230 against left-handers 315 against and he can hurt she hit 13 home runs during the regular year fastball when the podrace bad in the fourth they have Bevacqua Martinez and Timbaland in three [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Waller started when an inning in 2/3 Frank Booker and to come in with the bases loaded [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Alan Trammell walk [Applause] in the second Lou Whitaker scoring from four [Applause] [Music] consistency in this wireless which can help you if he's violent no burpees while law obviously coming through [Music] the Padres gone from one foot to the other [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Gregg Parrish a right-hander up in the bullpen they'll be back on their heels and you never see a good play [Music] just trying to settle the youngster down it's a tough spot for no question about it Williams taking a good look to see if his man is ready he's looking for a sign from Harry Dunlop Dakota sian Texas had off bzees ready the has walked 3 la O'War for [Applause] Oh ciao [Applause] [Applause] [Music] bruce fremming is going to try to break it up because there's no strategy and Bobby who's trying to buy some time and now Williams is going to go out there make his change if his pictures ready and here he comes [Applause] we just go out there down here except to tell you [Music] we'll be bringing in dragon Aaron just like he boarded with the face is loaded six [Applause] [Music] [Applause] that one as a kid used to call it drop it's an overhand curveball and a slider but in this spot in Gibson's gotta go he's got the bases loaded he's going to try to get ahead [Applause] I'm going to sit on if it's anything but a fastball originally signed with them watch the deal [Applause] [Music] they roster [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Michigan State he was [Applause] breaking ball [Applause] the patient remains [Music] it's Gibson [Music] [Applause] watching if you're going to get hit that's a pretty good spot the base on ball to hit bats when they got her no official time at bat [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] minefield again [Applause] they said loaded wide open now [Music] [Applause] figure that Lance is sitting on that basketball for career Grand Slam so [Applause] without getting a base [Applause] three Kurt Bevacqua melot Martinez and clubs shutting the other guy down the Padres scored their run it almost scores a lot of run get back to one run they gave up when Bevacqua hit that three-run home run in game 2 Sparky Anderson said he must have been paying me back for the time I sent him to the minors when I was managing at Cincinnati he cut him in the last man to be cut in spring training to 7 [Applause] bouncer foul Marty Castillo hit the two run home run so in a sense there's the connection lavaca wa Castillo who now joins it in the celebrity corner [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] you saw that both kangaroo but Winokur I've been able to get to it anyway that ball hard the first time right at Whitaker this time he hits a passing could die but to know that's five hits off will Carmelo Martinez struggling just to make contact for eight in the series and in postseason play striking out a lot [Applause] that's the pitch they went into layoffs easier said than done no question about it Deacon Jones was talking to him long time before [Music] you see not aqua [Music] and perish now watch very simple conversation you got a four run lead just trust some strikes what are you trying to hit Carter's farm we gave you the lead throw some strikes we'll make some plays much later in the ballgame we'll have our selection of [Applause] baseball left in the top of five Padres one Bevacqua had [Applause] it's swinging his arms back [Applause] his breaststroke it looks like he's had a little trouble [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] and I guess he's one of those fellows [Applause] most of the others alike he got Martinez the last time on the slow curve let's see what he does [Applause] Martina's take a look at this cameras something break and he just cannot pull the trigger and follows it right into the catcher's mitt pretty good recovery Parrish goes out it's two and he throws three strikes well I don't he didn't go out there to make friends and influence people the influential pitcher went out here's Tamlyn all the way off there my problems with pitchers never came it always came in the game like this they think they got a big Li if they let up a little bit are they start to nipple and they start to finesse and you say hey what got you here you fastball drawing Wilcox should study little history concerning Sparky and complete games [Applause] Jack Morris that's the only complete that Sparky Anderson from the starting pitcher World Series game in the Gregory had came this year as we [Applause] Oh into all the way [Applause] [Music] Bevacqua at first [Applause] [Music] to play barehanded by Castillo no throw and [Applause] Padres would have had runners at second and third to Castillo wisely elected to first and second one and Bobby Brown about it stayed right on that grass you can still could do nothing isn't it amazing on bass replacing [Applause] the if the bum heart is last time he drilled one the right right at Kirk Gibson [Applause] second Browns strategies for hitting is going to be [Applause] in she way [Applause] the storm waves on a stern and distant shore [Applause] Casey at the back one two [Applause] picked that section that we show that and obviously because it was really coming around strong [Applause] would second one out too chopper to third right at the [Applause] scramble [Applause] himself a base hit with Castile [Applause] [Applause] annachi Virgil said he alright he said don't tell the manager and Bevacqua was just one step [Applause] running well just a half-gainer he's going to avoid the tag with castile whose touch the base once again the box [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] - what you said before [Applause] we're talking about Sparky in the fact [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] and they're also don't kind of things like rotating [Applause] in unison it is really something here [Applause] camera steady [Applause] a little bouncy by the mile what [Applause] the short [Music] breaking the game wide open the fact that they have left now we should make the [Music] [Applause] six men on [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you'll see it just like metal side [Applause] I'll tell you one thing he's 40 years old [Music] a little smaller the steps are going to get a little steeper and he's not going to make the play he used to me clam off the side a little bit more dude he made that play for ten years giving a basin [Applause] and the batter barbaro garbey [Music] [Applause] short flied - salad it awful when you pick up the paper and you start the trombone trying to get it in focus but the telephone directory that's all [Applause] herndon can run when they let him go he stole him six out of eight Greg Harris the third San Diego pitcher Lawler Booker and now Harris and it's 5-1 tiger both Booker and Harris had to come in with the bases loaded [Applause] ground ball not hit hard big Linda Wiggins wiggins on most cheated on that play at second base he really watched him because Wiggins in a hurry to make his play was almost beyond the bag on Templeton throw ball was hit that hard cut off the hand a look at Wiggins he may have just been in the neighborhood that was the old neighborhood play right there Paul Romney was bearing down on it but he was in the neighborhood okay where's the play by Templeton [Music] right Alan you got away with it he's learning fast at me this his first year at second base and here is Chet lemon ball one the best cheater and I use the word advisedly I ever saw at first base was Gil Gil Hodges there's nobody like that he'd be off the bag hand the ball to the pitcher [Applause] no strikes to chat lemon Castillo's home but he was such a nice guy he would never do that hell it was up to the unclarity fallen it was so big to only war of glob because the other guys did one ball and no strikes hoggish glove was about as handy as Michael Jackson [Applause] the one he left home one in 111 who's checking with alex grammas our BAE at first held on by Garvey [Applause] Garr Bay is in the red he's been caught more times and he has succeeded but they might [Applause] early in the fourth it is 5-1 Detroit and there has been an awful lot of shakin goin on properly so in Motown [Applause] big breaking ball but he's got a legitimate curveball you call it occur because everybody else does but that's a drop where kids most of those great names I wish they'd come back en shoot the out shoot Vader Rob Reiser [Applause] and they're gonna keep an eye on garbade thinking it might be a planet [Applause] [Applause] Maris last American Association in strikeouts they can get the job done [Applause] he's got a fastball a slider that was looked like the slider but that big prick breaking ball that he's got is a curve ball to drop Norm Chow his pitching coach refers to it as a legitimate curve [Applause] well that slider really complimented here's the legitimate curve that he drew before look at the rotation on this ball tell you that new camera is really something [Applause] I'm sure we'll see it on [Applause] football for instance when a receiver Eddie or did he not catch the ball did the ball hit the ground you'd probably tell with that Oh easy breaking ball fouled away right into the Tigers down [Applause] [Music] [Applause] lemon again along with garbade checking with third-base coach Alex Gramma's [Applause] and II can't they called him about to pitch another game over to first base - and - we'll watch garbage nope he's not really making a good move over there some of the times he's don't like to change a pace over there and other times he's throwing hard but it's not a good quick move it's almost as if he's saying I know you're there and I just let you know that I know [Applause] I really don't know if he has a better move but that's just a commercial or not [Applause] and there goes garb a hit run foul ball down the line out of play so they were sniffing at it they knew it was around here somewhere and they're gonna check again if it's still on I know the late Walter Alston used to always say if you think a play is good and a hitter fouls it off come right back with let's see it Sparky comes back with it GARP a checked with the trees iski took a good luck he's got to get her in the box - and - he's not about to pitch out he does he better have that sign locked bottom of the fourth inning one we'll see if they have garbage turn to nope now Bob so they put it on they took it off now why if you try and follow Sparky's thinking the count was the same the situation basically the same now you have shown at once why wouldn't you keep it on well he may have told gar pay if you get a good jump go ahead when he did it now somebody's going to tip it off now Sparky is took a good look at him grandmas hasn't done much guar bake did not check with tracewski [Applause] and that sequence did they put [Applause] to strike out Nevada is dere 11th when the Padres Quinn Garvey and that fastball was clocked at 85 with that Cameron looked like my trust the second base hi dears Evans oppa one hard slider inside one ball no strikes Evans wide to Saturn movie back in the second inning when the Tigers scored four and last time up in the third inning he walked [Applause] with eight walks and a hit batter almost everyone in the Tiger lineup has gotten a free ticket somewhere in the first floor inning and was hit by a bed parish water Evans what garv a and Castillo [Applause] two balls no strike quite a pitch two balls and no strikes let up on his turf ball but got it in there this has been a long inning and you collies Wow [Applause] hard to believe as Darrell Evans at the seven years ago he was part of the only threesome in Major League history did 40 or more home runs the illustrious named Henry Davey Johnson and and there's bill Wilcox keeping that right arm warm very comfortable evening here it looks like Wilcox has put on the undershirt I think so - to Devin three into Robeson to catch you at the Yankees mister beer pitchers three and two on everybody fighters [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] bases on balls are pretty unsatisfying [Applause] [Music] who cares we should here's Marty Castillo two-on-two [Applause] walks and a hit batter [Applause] and so Detroit has left in men they should have pause and iego out but it's still a game we'll be right back after these best you're looking down at Tiger Stadium here in Detroit kind of a throwback to the old day and maybe that's one reason why have you had nine walks and a hit batter by San Diego pitcher at least it's worthy of your consideration with a young pitching staff accustomed of pitching in a multi-purpose stadium the San Diego Padres Lawler Booker and Harris might be a little claustrophobic here and trying to pitch too carefully that could be an insight into why we've had so many warts ball one to tony gwynn one Big Joe and you look in the outfield because they have a wire fence atop the low barrier wall the crowd looks closer than it really is [Applause] [Music] there's the fence we're talking about and you do feel like the fences are closer the crowd closer and the sound here like it it really should carry and does carry the 300 in San Diego looks very far it's 365 here and it looks like about 340 and in right-center it is 370 the same distance of San Diego here you'd feel like the people right on top of at least it's a thought we lay it out you don't like it deep six interesting anytime a pitcher gets two strikes on Tony Gwynn because he's the toughest to strike out in the see Wilcox can do [Applause] once again is batting coach Deacon Jones as we look at the Garvey on deck says if I win he's not afraid to hit with two strikes and he's he can put the ball and play he says when he does strike got him really is almost ashamed that he strikes out almost leaks back to the bench [Music] [Applause] we took something off [Music] Nataly 13 times in over 600 look at this change um now you see the rotation fastball to tumbling effect then you just saw he's 72 and here's Steve Garvey struck out hit into a force play who's that the biggest shame [Applause] [Music] third and nobody out and if he hits one they're very much in the game but and the run people backhanded by Evans perfectly [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] see by Darrell [Applause] he's shooting the ball away and Wilcox many times you'll see a runner go parallel to the line and turn to the infield or if he's got the time which Wilcox did here he just caught the ball he kept right on going in the foul territory to avoid a collision [Music] walked in the first inning and fouled out in the third it's 5-1 Detroit top of the fifth [Applause] [Music] [Applause] wilcox trying to retire the side in order for the first time leading 5-1 in the bill as you see wearing the dark undershirt now [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] no hits no errors five boxing right after baseball Cornelia's posed to Edwards and Charlie choo-choo Brown Belfast before a packed house at his fan Barry McGuigan like leap a Roscoe big day tomorrow right here and [Applause] flied to right and at the end of the stick tough play [Applause] to pick it up when I because they wouldn't have had a chance to get whitaker looks like it's going to stay but not let go just barely likes it then while we got a chance here I made a note I could friend baseball's good friend bill fact recovering from an operation and Mary Frances bills wide watching the game we certainly wish you a speedy recovery baseball fans across this great country all over people bill Veck as much a part of baseball yes sir so get ready and come out to the ballpark we'll see out there bill get well in a hurry to the county and while we do put things in proper perspective [Applause] we'd also like to send along our best wishes to Margaret Harvey umpire Doug Harvey's mom who's in Villa View Hospital we said earlier Sparky talking about the most important you'll be able to take care of his daughter's wedding with the World Series year whether it's loser the world creeps in around the edges one and two to Lou Whitaker we're in the bottom of the fifth inning 5-1 Tigers [Applause] nice catch but he cheated man he could catch her Moby Dick with that thing vennett wandering gerund we saw bill Scherrer throwing earlier the Whitaker's caught looking toughest strikeout he got lemon transduce telecast presented by authority of major league base and may not be reproduced without the express written [Applause] [Music] tamo has been busy he's walked twice doubled scored a run would you believe the Padres have more hits than the Tigers [Applause] what was that thing you used to holler on the playground come on walks as good as in here walks as good as in here if so the Tigers have 14 hits [Applause] dear watching Harris now especially with the good breaking ball Association in strikeout wanted to [Applause] Bevacqua and Martinez coming up in the sixth a tinkerer said - winter the Tigers got four in the second the Padres got one in the top of the third and the Tigers came right back with one in the bottom of the third [Applause] breaking wall looper and Wiggins that's the second one and he is simply outran he outruns the ball he catches that ball mile with that great speed in his you can see the ball watch it hit off the end of the bat it's a curve ball kenneth chalks it up accuse it just simply outruns it though the converted outfielder using all of those skills with that great speed [Applause] his Kurt Gibson walk hit by a FET when he was hit by the pitch it was also for for [Applause] dunno [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] and the Tigers scored their right database hit three walks [Music] and another that makes it 10 record for anybody if you're ever at the ballpark in a game like this start to watch the infielders and outfielders and you'll see all kinds of things why don't we scratch it is Mac the other one we'll be taking is the other guy's got his finger in his ear I mean you just cannot stay on your toes when they're three and two and walking all these people Lance Parrish will put you on your toes he has walked singled and lined out to Center with the bases loaded the Gibson with his great speed held on by Garvey 5:1 Tigers bottom of the fifth two out wiggins way over to his right to fill up the [Applause] the outfield just about straightaway around two steps off the line and [Applause] Gibson has stolen 29 pairs medals now kind of walking around [Music] [Applause] one and OH just before that pen nettles and Templeton I think we're calling the fit one of them was to the other they do it again nettles will fellas what to live up to his mouth so will Templeton just watch you see if they do it quickly - boss yep - and our what you need to know if you're an infielder especially the shortstop looking in is it an off-speed pitch breaking ball and one calls it for the others usually to use his first name and with the open mouth he just opened his mouth that would be curveball based on what he did on that pitch Ian nettles are doing it not so much Templeton working with Wiggin pull hitter [Applause] and there goes Gibson the pitch is low [Music] gets rid that bowling good not especially good ball to handle he had something on it and it just pops right out of the glove that was an interesting bit of inside baseball the second time that templeman put his glove up and opened his mouth he was looking at Wiggins for the first time and that was telling Wiggins you covered I stay the previous pitch he did something to Neville no cover he was falling a bit there Riaan Wanda Gibson good save by [Music] [Applause] a record a best-seller [Applause] [Music] [Applause] lied to santa walk and a single [Music] one for two [Applause] is a hit batter as good as a walk if a walk is as good as a hit same thing it really is 12 and norm sherry who does not really want to be called a pitching coach tonight [Music] no question about it he just wants to be a coach tonight like introduce myself to you you'll swear you've never met me people ask you what I do you don't tell them what I eleven walks on a hit batter and we've only played four and 2/3 innings you know it really could be a little claustrophobia especially predict Williams 136 pictures [Applause] making an average of a hundred pitches per game three ganger it's still only five one before [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Parrish at first Gibson at second and more play between temple and [Applause] chopper less than a foot couple of inches [Applause] rosemon throwing alone down there in the bullpen baring gear his stop 1 & 2 the count to Larry Herndon [Music] five hits have the Tigers and eleven walks [Applause] [Music] [Applause] remember the Tigers have already left ten men in ready the lost battalion [Music] I popped by 10 [Applause] the Tigers lead to more left 12 and 5 and [Applause] [Music] five Padres one Kennedy Bevacqua Martinez come with all the walks the crowd of course if you were the catcher and your pitching staff has walked 11 and hit a batter and all kinds of wonderful signs why would the sign because she would give to this pitching staff tonight well I actually did this numbers got points part I held up like this and the pitcher call me Ani said what is that I said the garbage you're throwing good luck pal well so far they're getting away with it what do you think about it it's still very much a game it's five to one the Tigers who have squandered numerous opportunity they left to in the first the bases loaded in the second and third two and the fourth and 2 + v to leave 12 have left six they've got a chance to get back in the game let's see whether it changes it all Kennedy has grounded out twice then Bob aqua and Marty ground ball foul and with Kennedy up there with the include time we say that he's caught most of those pitches and all these base on balls so I don't think he's going to go to the dance tonight we can't count on him and he's fought a lot you know during the regular year [Applause] but one of the things he said he's hit that little shark I'd first-base wouldn't get on there once a while I could play there and he could catch standing up he's always on garment on the cow five runs five hits for Detroit six hits for the Padre big change [Applause] away too until [Applause] there's Terry Kennedy with his dad Bob Kennedy who has done everything in baseball except the owner club he's been manager general manager Claire personnel now assistant al Rosen Houston [Applause] well what a thrill he must have had watching his son double in a couple of in a World Series game [Music] [Applause] [Applause] Kurt Bevacqua on deck his thunder was stolen by Marty Castillo tonight amazing sometimes you world series and it's not it's a Bevacqua or a Castillo [Applause] Wise's one two [Music] dusty roads in 54 labeled single-handedly beat Cleveland [Applause] would eat his glove Kennedy leading off the sixth inning Lopez goes jogging down they Detroit bullpen [Music] watch Wilcox has only walked two [Applause] Bevacqua hit the ball hard twice lined out to Whittaker and single by Whittaker in the fourth inning of course is never a threat to doing Iran [Applause] now it's a turn passing signals as to I would think with a guy like Bevacqua you'd be switching with parish when he was up there hidden you figure that shortstop would always hold [Applause] [Music] around second base where the infielders have a very basic sign as to who's going to cover they settle it before the game if the shortstop is the mouth open means one person how close means [Applause] [Music] strides into it and he's locked at the plate he has to tell you there you take a look at trample and watch what he does [Applause] that wasn't a signal there it is i foul behind the plate bearish coming back looked like it was going to be in the stands just comes slicing back there's no particular Brie it just must be a graph whoa everything back as you can see the flag 125 feet high in the air not just watch when Wilcox pitches to Martinez the pattern has been the same fast balls inside and then the curveball see if he stays with that Martinez has struck out twice old four two over nine in the series [Applause] and sure throwing behind Wilcox in the tiger bullpen [Applause] Wilcox made 33 starts this year without a complete game check swing foul he's still swinging those arms around as you said it might be a happen remember Bob Miller who pitched for a lot of teams in the nation always have a habit of looking for sign and he pull the top of his shirt he would do it after every pitch and he was totally unaware Robin Roberts mr. brushes brushes be careful John didn't strike ya on Martinez [Applause] ground ball to the hole smothered by Castile but no [Applause] you know I don't know if we have Castillon a cab let's see if we can see him lean to his right and the ball was hit to his left that's a difference in the game well it was a slow curveball he thought it would be pulled right and he did not pull it as hard as he did you'll see him break once tough to curveball to cover the line and that's what cost him to face hit [Applause] though Castillo is very surprised thinking that Martinez couldn't pull that slow curveball and it winds up giving Martinez's first hit in the series here is Templin fastball lined to center but 11 boy he had right on the screws [Applause] not an easy ball to handle you can see it knuckle from here tell you with all the face on balls and all that somebody popped one right now and the Tigers can be [Applause] downtown Brown this is the unti time that come up with two men on base but in the shape well that's a tough load for a guy who doesn't play regularly he's playing for Kevin McReynolds who's out with a broken wrist and every time you look up he's on the spot and tonight he's hit the ball hard to right feel and then hit that ball to the third base of Castille didn't make the force on third base and he's over nine by the way today he is swinging a little bit different tonight though he's trying to go to the opposite field and then fall outside the original downtown or san diego uniform and there a lot of people is to like to go Bobby down down and cross down and up down two on two out oh and one two Bobby five one Tigers Wilcox's pitching like a man who's almost standing around waiting to be caught and the Padres have been trying and all have succeeded in doing is leaving six men on base [Applause] this is not one of those games that you show the little wager and say this is the way they do it [Applause] one and one to brown [Applause] and he missed with that slow spinner and it's one strike Bobby hit three home runs during the regular year in Sparky's base in the deck this is not an easy 5-1 lead at all [Music] fastball you hear ballplayers sometimes use the expression it's a laugher this one definitely is not elaborate it's really and I'm not being facetious it's a groaner managers will sit on that bench engines roll hydration groaning because they've given up so many walks the Tigers are growing because they really let him off the hook [Applause] two and two [Applause] well II get a little bit of a any speed [Music] first and LB [Applause] [Music] almost on the grass he's that deep at first he's out of your picture the runners ready to go Brown isn't ready in fact Virgil I think was calling time for brown telling him to get out [Applause] telling them just keep on running now you've got a score lose the balls hit takeoff Kennedy there they go and it's hit - laughs coming up is Herndon [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] Detroit Tiger Stadium bottom of the sixth inning it is 5-1 Detroit and barbaro garbey Kent lemon and Darrell Evans [Music] [Applause] foul ball that'll give us a chance to give you a little note you know garbade made the first and last out in the second inning [Applause] named rusty Staub with the Mets against Oakland back in 73 [Applause] it's not much but it beats talking about walk not much of a choice is right 11 walked a hit batter and 20 men left well by Detroit eight by San Diego two and two [Applause] the Padres have seven hits the Tigers have five hit Garr Baio for 6 in the series have you seen Edelstein [Applause] now back Eric Shou at the far end of the do it [Applause] he hid it upstairs [Applause] [Music] [Applause] - and to the barbaro garbey matters in the bottom of the sixth inning duck bears up for the first time joining share in the bullpen oh what a breaking ball adios no doubt about that one it started for the middle plate and nip that outside corner [Applause] take a good look at it watch this now tell me the curveball doesn't curve [Applause] no way he couldn't hit that with two or three bats in the sixth inning and [Applause] strike says fremming Kennedy was going to ask to check with Garcia Bruce said I don't need any help on that one Owen [Applause] [Music] that's a good-natured guy he's fun to talk to ya you know not that fremming did it on that but I tell you when you do get a close one you will throw that right hand up and try to get this game going away so Harris now starting to throw some strikes and he has it on - we saw the manna throughout the ball in San Diego that run you was fine play you better start swinging when you left the dugout visit the pitcher to Utley usually we call it the strike there they are the left-hander of the right hand [Applause] 1 & 2 [Applause] one out six inning five one slow roller tough play for temple [Applause] get first slide he didn't try look like he bounced [Applause] here's a real good look at it he sees base hit insight you know I've had a lot of baseball scouts say that you actually lose a step when you die I guess they clocked them what's the what's the arm on his gun on a way he flips it he knows that he's got to get rid of it in a hurry [Applause] great hustle by Chet lemon that beat out a slow roller to shore [Music] that's pretty good fit [Applause] darrel flied deep to center and walk twice scored in the third you know lemon must have been hit in his career they've been a hundred times by pitches but he must have been hit many times being he really goes back holding his head he's always worried about that helmet [Applause] [Applause] another slow curve watch Lemongrab that helmet I would think somewhere along the line somebody comped him and it's been on his mind ever since it's not a good feeling even with the how much you get hit that it's not a good feeling it isn't man autumn makes him feel like you're inside a bell a strikeout for Harris picking up two in the inning Marty Castillo you would think that the helmet gives you protection and but you still feel some [Applause] [Music] he's afraid the helmet might fall off so he's trying to keep it on his head in case he takes one I've seen outfielders play with the hell not just their own defensive shortcomings I haven't seen anybody wear a helmet in the outreach [Applause] mentioned Dusty Rhodes come Sparky 54 [Applause] Oh balls went up he misjudged him he called time came into hitting the sunglass trace and don't give me a helmet I popped by and Alan Wiggins without [Applause] [Music] one hit a man at the end of six five one time well bill Scherrer has picked up a Milt Wilcox and a one-hopper right to Marty Castillo [Applause] we'll share on the skinny side from Tonawanda New York [Applause] the tires acquired sheriff from the Reds after the start of the season when he was a rookie in 83 he saved ten games for Cincinnati his first two years in the the ambitions last - in office glove and that's going to take Whitaker out of the play yes and aboard is Gwynn with a beige in tony gwynn is two for four somehow those good hitters find a way to get on find a way to get a basehead and only because it that balls solid more times than not right off the end of the glove and when really digging hard down that first base line look at him going hustling all the way Wilcox went six innings allowed on and seven head it was somewhat of a wobbly six however and so Sparky has gone to the left-hander and down in the bullpen he has his ace Willie Hernandez Garvey is struck out hit into a force play ground lines it - laughs Herman and it's off his glove [Applause] he's in there in the second goes Garvey [Applause] things that they always say in baseball is keep that double playing on it when you're on defense and Rendon trying to make the shoestring catch hits his glove and it allows Garvey to go into second base so it's 2nd and 3rd DoublePlay threat as he raced a base hit now and the Padres are right in it the second and third and one nettles and Kennedy both left-handers coming up against Shearer [Applause] [Music] high flyball that's deep enough to get [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Barbie was watching Castiel [Music] watch this and here comes Sparky out there but lemon makes a good strong throw and let me guess they're just standing there to see hands on his head bird to leave now gotta be his fool than he when he's in easily [Applause] [Music] [Applause] you're a day and night to give a parched land a drink of water now comes your turn and miller.time means it's time for the best views and v Miller my life [Music] here is what - welcome to Miller High Life [Music] good pitching is the most important part of baseball hey wait a minute good hitting is more important while we disagree about which is more important on the diamond off the field we both agree that everyone should learn how to perform CPR knowing CPR could start someone's heart that have stopped that could make you a winner for more information on CPR call your American Heart Association or the American Red Cross baseball cares and you should too right right this message was furnished by major league baseball in cooperation with the Players Association here's the play by Garvey now when he goes from second to third he's looking at the ball thinking is not being thrown now watch the third-base coach Virgil and watch the acting job on a third baseman look at him well that's cutting it close very close down was Virgil and Castillo at his hand on his hip like he'd said well no play well as a playful Willie Hernandez all right he comes in with a runner at third and to out five to two in favor of Detroit and of course those brilliant numbers you know in the big deal of March 2:24 [Applause] [Music] [Applause] involve Philadelphia the Tigers wanted Greg gross but gross was a five and ten men and he vetoed the deal so they took Willie Hernandez in my Greg gross they got Dave Birdman can you imagine opposing hitters trying to pick up garbage sir less than 200 for Terry Kennedy [Applause] [Applause] [Music] on deck hitter if Kennedy somehow extends the inning here comes Kurt Bevacqua [Applause] you would be the time run [Applause] you can see Sparky sneaking he's been waiting for then he needs somebody to start nailing it mr. Hernandez and there's a rotation seto seeds 83 he's not known as a power pitcher but he looks fast when he starts going the other stuff by comparison two balls two strikes two whoa good save by parish and other runners funny they never give capture a standing ovation if lemon made a catch like that it brought down the house but the catcher for some reason doesn't get the crowd they expected it's just like when you get hit with a foul-tip you think the umpire ask you who checks the ball that's a cinch save of a run three into the Kennedy [Applause] [Music] a drive to center lemon was shallow it's over [Applause] you get I got a Big Mac where's mine you said you weren't hungry I said that too bad too because it's irresistible I can't wait to sink my teeth into this big mouth watery hey Lester you know the trick is for you to talk while I eat as I seen it Jake let's see if you can dump while I eat that's no trick trick you want your trick I'll show you a trick I'll get my own Big Mac and I'll seek my own teeth into it you just sit down save my seat you think dummy I can't tell you everything for it is done lately but just for openers let me tell you about the doors ford's aircraft style doors blend smoothly into the roofline they also have concealed rain gutters this contributes to better aerodynamics which reduces wind noise and saves you fuel better doors are just one more area where ford is closing in on perfection [Music] here's the great played by Lance Parrish on the throw Wow [Applause] [Music] [Applause] his bicycle craze [Music] [Applause] how close San Diego has come patches 5-3 Vin's east and Bevacqua is coming up we still have a lot going on it's a wild kind of a game you don't get the feeling no matter how far out in front they've got a lock on it one thirteen men on the record for most men left on Beijing and nine his 14 San Diego every inning but the fifth they've had bass one these tiger pictures you know it's almost like they've had to infield look at that 22 it's a lot of standing around [Applause] and the record for two clubs is 23 got another story they're the two worst records in the world walks and men left they what kind of can't even tell your grandchildren about we set the record for men left the question so who cares yeah [Music] 1 & 2 [Applause] Lou Whitaker flied to right walk twice struck out and he cares [Applause] five to Detroit got him on the corner [Applause] Irish came in in the third inning to pitch to Gibson movie hit is now struck out five he's settling in [Applause] Hawkins and Lefferts you're Becky now you have Harrison all good [Applause] yellow stars [Applause] [Music] very very close and only a Greg nettles can make a play like that clothes that Greg nettles caliber I mean watch it from the top I mean it is almost just a dead perfect father's past the pitcher he comes in very handy almost get seen that's it's just a super plays Brooks Robinson in the world [Applause] so travel tryna shake up his ball club a little bit and here's Kirk Gibson [Applause] when the Garvey on the bag it's a tag at second and high throw so for the first in the series [Applause] the shortstop since he stepped on the bag it had to be a tag play at second he had trouble I think getting it out of the glove he wants to make the one sure out and there's we had a little bit of trouble and travel slides in safely [Applause] [Music] if Templeton doesn't catch it you folks at home happy right action great here's Lance Parrish walk twice infield single lined out to Center big hook sent him to his knees for one Lance just missed being a hundred RBI man and we said there hadn't been one in this series and there hadn't been one since 1968 he had 98 RBIs popped it up and Wiggins and its Wiggin so the punch single by trammel and their yet and left on base 23 in the games it's higher records you can have a Tigers 5 Padres 2 now in the eighth-inning Bevacqua Martinez and tamilyn against Willie Hernandez [Applause] we have a new first baseman for Detroit Dave Bergman taking over for Darrell Evans find out two Whitaker single to right-center and one for three [Applause] Bevacqua right now is for ten he's hitting 500 he has a home run in three RBIs [Applause] one-on-one we'll scroogie down and away [Music] [Applause] [Music] in 1983 the Tigers were the last team in the major leagues to get a save you talk about turning an apartment around [Applause] allowed a home run in his last 60 innings it was a fastball he's got a pretty well set up if he wants to throw that screwball two and two fastball the old story you look for the fastball because you figure you can set up and react to the off-speed pitch you went the other way around you'd be left at the station all the time go into [Applause] lacy once said some was very confused he said he sits on the fastball but looks for the curve two and two and a scroogie a half swing top of the Castillo [Applause] that's what the scoop all do you start to swing you think it's out his strike zone and he starts to gone he wants to draw back but it and he stumbles getting out of there and here's a look at that scoop ball watch it break [Applause] just got the bat too far now though with one out here's Carmelo Martinez one for three [Applause] [Music] [Applause] count twice and had the infield single member the big slow curve and Castillo knew was a slow curve and he broke towards a foul line and all Martinez's would roll it sto 5 eagle [Music] it was only hit he's on a pitch he should have ripped he's really having a tough time of the fight little bouncer down to tram [Applause] the Tigers are leading five to two yet they to retire the Padres in order only once that was in the fifth inning now here in the eighth they've gotten Bevacqua Martinez but you can almost feel how they've really come together with Menendez out there now yeah but remember the first guy Hernandez pitch to his cherry Kent Hannity right in lemon don't make that cat's look out here's Templeton two singles and lined out screwed you missed temple in his two-four-three hitting 455 he's had five hits in the last two games [Applause] popped it up and I mean up second time [Applause] five to Detroit's market and look too good [Applause] Honda invented three wheelers so families could have more fun together in the winter time or any time of year if you want your family to have more fun this winter's see the world's most complete line of three wheelers there at your Honda dealer how far is our Honda dealer daddy just keep walking Tigers leading the Padres 5-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning and Detroit will send up Larry Herndon barbaro garbey and Chet lemon the paid attendance tonight 51 thousand nine and 70 one nine seven Oh [Applause] tomorrow Jack Morris and Eric Shou the pregame show at 1:00 p.m. Eastern the game should start at 125 followed by the doubleheader of boxing on sports world [Applause] Larry Herndon walk single in hot dog picked up the RBI with ball hit the tempo why [Applause] barbaro garbey [Applause] [Music] why the shattered into a force play and struck out [Applause] if you're not keeping score and you like the to the ninth-inning the Padres are due to send up Bobby Brown Alan Wiggins and Tony Gwynn and if anybody gets on Steve Garvey [Applause] to an hour [Applause] Tigers scored four in the second inning and that's been the key to the whole ball game ignited by the two-run home run of Marty Castillo ground ball to third nettle flip the Garvey two down [Applause] the big defensive play of the night playing shallow and it's [Music] it was hit over his head [Applause] markable body I'm really surprised you didn't fall down at least since that ball wound up over his head and then behind you flyball to right for the first time tonight [Applause] [Music] bass Tigers 5 Padres to crown Wiggins and win a new idea like a pebble in a pond can change the world around it technology from a company will be the key to winning the file battles Sunday as we go to the ninth inning Bobby Brown is due up and he will not come up Luis Salazar third baseman and outfielder will here it'd be followed by wig [Music] five to two [Music] of Detroit and the night two games to one over San Diego [Applause] steal right at the bag at third and here we go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] all for two in the World Series [Applause] [Music] and of course the Tigers have an absolutely scary number when they're leading in the ninth-inning they're perfect what was in 94 and OH [Applause] one the first game of the series so their record absolutely scary and sip [Applause] the Johnny racers out on the mound [Music] [Applause] 1 & 2 lying in the right-field he got the ball [Applause] he made a bad pitch on Salazar that ball just stayed up and Salazar drove a nail through it into right field high school ball you can see him turn it over the pitch stays up there and Salazar tattoos it she turned it over and high school ball [Applause] real good look at the rotation to see how high it was cells are when I've got it now you have Wiggins who is 2 for 4 you have Garvey one thing about Wigan he's the toughest man to in the major leagues this year they only hit into two double plays and I would guess both under 1 he was hitting right-handed he's a switch-hitter [Applause] interestingly enough the two double plays he was hitting left hand pop it up and it will be travel [Applause] Gwen is coming up our executive producer Michael Weissman our coordinating producer Harry Coyle producer George Finkel our director Harry Coyle technical director lens reminder tomorrow pregame at 1:00 p.m. Eastern game time 125 followed by sports world win has to hit C Street before and he hits it to the right a Whitaker big Happy Feet store they've got a double play and it doesn't big huh would that have been ironic to have a bad hop on this beautiful field at ball really up to Midland it carries Whitaker almost past second base there's the big high hop and a momentum he wants to make sure that he gets to one out Trammell takes a look and says no I'm not going to throw it and take a chance though with two down Steve Garvey coming up Garvey doubled in the seventh inning off Herndon with an RBI [Applause] Garvey with nevels to follow if Garvey can get a board otherwise this one is history [Applause] [Music] [Applause] I think not only is the noise a distraction but if you're hitting and those people straightaway centerfield are waving their hand that's a tough background out there although it is far away it doesn't help you [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh gee miss [Applause] [Music] the dick Williams is down to his last out [Music] [Applause] [Music] challenge [Applause] one two that Suns out
