Johnson is standing by of the growth junior doubt pits about the hundred yards down the road here how do you communicate back and forth to keep in touch with what's going on well we don't right now the radios that I have should pick up there our darling Jeff when they're talking but they got their hands full I got behind Pune with us through the best again with the team's the way they're separated right now they make all the season there and I like them here junior people that have been here awhile say this is the hottest Daytona 500 city they can remember will this be a factor today great playing definitely a factor I think the cars it is not a handling real good will start showing up some more around two or three hundred mile and and you'll see some guy that it's accidentally hit the right common us and go away from the rest on about that okay Ken Darrell Waltrip now volted Waltrip is not 21st on the field running 21st they come around and for at least one more lap of caution I think the heat could be a factor for the drivers here too because in the winter these guys are cause driving the worse conditions in the world southeast because the tremendously hot in the summer when they build up to it but every bit out of practice that sort of thing and they're normal it's a pretty cool race are they going to get hot today very hot I can remember the late 60s in 67 when Mario Andretti won this race it was a scorcher and I believe in 69 when Leroy Yarborough won this race it was also a day equal to this duck Hebburn is back on pit road we can take a look at a race analysis here as we watch doc ever and having problems in his first go out here duck Cameron there's the race analysis 42 cars started today for a purse of $1,200,000 here's net George with Dave Martin's first driver out of the race if Dave Marcus Dave I think that look on your face tells a story very disgusting man it is it's you know we were really running good all week long out of this portion in the 125 I got a black Pike Mike jumped on a restart and running forth with the cars all week long we've been able to draft with anybody around 197 198 with star system this is the best race car really that I've had on this racetrack I think since I've been here in 76 with the Dodge and it's it's very disappointing cuz I really felt like we could get up front and we had a chance to win this race who do you like out there do you have any pictures those that are left out there as to who might be the man to beat well I know Cale was running good net but you know I still think the Monte Carlo is are going to be tough to keep tight during the race at speed and I'd have to say that Bobby Starr is I ran with him yesterday he's very comfortable he's very tight he showed that in the 125 is where he really beat the guys through the corners they'd run back up on him down into the straightaways but when they got there they were so loose they couldn't make that pass I'm sure they had the power and everything like that to do it but Bobby's car was working good he was ticking and I would say that he's the guy because his car I know is very comfortable I ran with him yesterday afternoon and I told me cause Bob employs us in our car Bobby says never to do cause you can see lead this race today or camp as an interesting situation we'll have to give out they mounted on three lap system on those days you just wonder why both together Richard Petty has been on the move from 34th to 16 before the caution flag came out and there you see him with the car number 43 bloody parrot crew chief on the car they'll now move their shop to Kannapolis North Carolina some 60 miles from level cross were a petty racing organization has called home since the very beginning back in 1948 with leap in on the Goodyear blimp you're getting these pictures of the cars up on the banking give you a feeling for the 31 degrees of this track Goodyear blimp Enterprise out of Pompano Beach Florida showing you this vast expanse this largest crowd in the history of the southeast pilot captain Patrick Henry Parsons West Virginia down behind Lake Floyd moves the field and Green will be shown this time line they will take green as they complete nine months looking to an early caution I had I not help appeal them to be very disruptive to the drivers train of thought you really build yourself up all morning and then the day must fall out it's really the panting climax is terrible but these guys have been pumping selves up the last two weeks have a green as a caution by the end of the third a little bit disruptive I hope they got a good clean start which is awesome in single file because I had nobody in his lap which one of the things about they've marked into trouble through the qualifying race when he did it that make a second file as far as M you'll fauna5 nine down Harold kinder holding boxes 65 miles per hour there's the green flag and from the Goodyear blimp you see them come through the trials cross the start/finish line Kyle Petty and his father absolutely side-by-side it both jumped out of line man and there goes Rusty Wallace in the whiting green car Rusty Wallace victim of a terrible crash here number 88 a year ago now here with Richard Petty he takes Bouchard and he's going back 415 Ricky runs the 14th position right away cale yarborough [Music] cale Richard Kenny on the inside are in single file in the word one he's running about 1516 running in the breakaway now Bouchard has moved back wiring 447 for the leaders surprising at last victim Regan villager number 77 white Mon petit rear bumper this is only his 16th Grand National race there you see in the 77 as Ken Reagan he's a car dealer from Unadilla Georgia was a kart racer I mean go kart not any type cars made the switch very slow the yes all these long here that's two and a half mile track Robin Hood and parts of the adapted drivers here but he doesn't did you say all week an attorney isn't ringing David Pearson is currently running 11th the going 1209 the 13th position is Kyle Petty they swap them around for 14th these days here's Terry Labonte going back by Cale Yarborough just squeezing down the inside David Nabit begin behind Terry to pick up his drop but pulling straight out against an amazing the staff assignment in front of the start/finish line here here they are dead even the pre climb they call McArthur what our yard rail goes back in front and takes Bobby Allison pause Terry Labonte with it Bobby Allison has won this 500 right here's a fencing unified threat number 22 Savanti that spectacle AJ point on pit row number 14 1972 500 winner the last time he won a grand aspiration was 72 and Ontario California hope to have an Oldsmobile doing better today their country standing line leaders go into free and funny Bank is pulled up 2/3 plus support Buddy Baker always a very strong runner here super spirit loves those 200 mile-an-hour lives paper in third Taliaferro who won the poll who won a 100 [Music] the first man since 1962 when fireball Roberts did it to win the filling 125-mile qualified race and go on go into 500 it's only been done at 25 years yeah girl has a shot at it this year if you've made the call to the second-fastest time but most of the drivers like the money and they really like to shake the cars down over that 125 mile distance hence Yarborough coming out and just running the wheels off this car on Thursday afternoon that 125 mile decrypt all the rage there was a moto victory in the end he just pulled out of the draft and ran away with a debated look Parisi which is had everybody else here pretty uneasy 500-mile race is a bit different as this Bobby Allison is a second 125 mile qualifier and the others Russell was the Parsons now here with Neil Bonnett here he is closing up on Terry Labonte you're in fifth place you're in fifth place right now going down the back straightaway about 200 miles an hour you're riding with deal but it makes a little bit of ground on terry labonte see they go into three pretty lows and centrifugal force which is those guys up the banking [Music] one lane from the opera's vantage point you're looking to second place there's Buddy Baker there's the Ford closing right up on a rear bumper [Music] our report from the AJ point Pitts Chris economy [Music] he says it's just like the rear wheels aren't getting ahold of the racetrack just like BLM is out there so we adjusted the chassis and we're going to try that it's not because of the heat I think Shaw's increased we haven't had any rain this week to clean this racetrack so the oil the rubber on the racetrack mr. company okay words to make a point pit cap first 213 one and eight ten seconds Alison happily reappropriation by Cale Yarborough Baker lies third going for its Terry the body and maintaining fifth Neil Bonnett back there in six is Harry Gant directly behind him 87 anyone with AIDS Walk wonder mom looks like he's gonna do the same thing because he's been running drink for the week very well as does buddy baby and for the first time this year people abroad television sets here to the Speedway they keep track of what's going on out there that infield is absolutely crammed today wasting it [Music] largest crowd in southeastern history is here after Daytona International Speedway you're back with Cale Yarborough getting a gander his rear window at Mafia they have cleared glass-fronted apps on these cars for some time so the random flanger was outlawed because you can't see through the cards [Music] is three or four cars in front of you this 190 mile an hour track is very confusing back in Midland again here's Allison down the inside and going back into the lead Bobby Allison sticks to Newark back in front as we back on the road [Music] Robert boys Calgary Alberta Canada number 48 runner up in the air here he'll go up in smoke slowing down in lap 18 [Music] God is runnin campaign by James Hilton who's been around NASCAR racing home as far as mr. penny AJ Boyd clerk didn't go to his pits before this had white light tires change about chappie adjustments are being made by this crew which is also in Indianapolis car crew he's losing a lot of time here they're just enclosed slide to the car that we're usually an adjustment is made on one side advance for weight from the left of the right or the right to the left but here the mechanics have worked on both sides he is fighting at the car the handle has it roars back on the track down coming by there's clever boys on pit road field is coming by another lap my team down Yarborough stays in front Alison states second Baker third fourth move Neal Bannen as Ken Regan improperly Unadilla Georgia driver number 77 Reagan - rode his Chevrolet having some problems early I'm saying with you very well prisons a report we're working at Kettering and again it's a fire situation right front tire the remarkable thing about places tires is reflecto soft the driver is never sure which one it is on a field that is the right front he may go out and come back a lot better saying that wasn't it this is because of the inner liner in the tire and it's quite a commotion joy Allison hold on get the mother laughs not the most well grilled pit crew and a slightest emotion going on here right now thank you Ken 20 lakhs 50 miles have been completed 450 miles to go in the million-dollar Daytona 500 back straightaway Garber on Allison they're at it again [Music] because he was the car that a lot of the crew chief Dunham is saying is going to be a major threat in this rape you know well and after we've heard already today's hot the track has got slick and the weakest are are and of course that could really as the race progressed continuing to nominate Cale Yarborough AJ boy dominated the compass in 1962 when he led 167 of 200 laps [Music] [Applause] kyle petty in his fifth daytona 500 is in trouble he just made a pit stop came back on the track of boom of smoke behind him and the 23 year old campaign looks like it's going to be a short day now what is the interface of level across North Carolina meanwhile his father maintains tenth position in a 13 twenty-fourth black and there is Richard Petty just in front of Ron Bouchard who is an 11 just in front of him is Tim Richmond and now there's another change of the lead cale yarborough and Bobby Allison continuing the ping-pong believe at better than 195 miles an hour it's going past coming gala how would you like to run that close to a wall at a couple hundred miles an hour [Music] just like going over the 59th Street bridge [Music] the leaders neil bonnett maintained important position Terry Labonte is in the fifth spot now fire situation developing here at they thought here's another change the lead down to the inside here is Yarborough squeezing by as he works with live traffic Bobby Allison Chris what's the story on the tires well it's really not a tire turns we found out you know the physical forces in act on these cars are very powerful we've seen the vibration and that vibration broke five of the nine spokes in this steel wheel and that's why he stopped they thought it was a prior vibrating the track these folks right off it's really an unbelievable situation and down pit road back here I have some more information riff I'm standing by with the Leonard word the first convoy favorite cars in seventh and what might be happening some drivers or not the car John handling as well into because of the heat blizzard yeah it's got a hot you know the track Gus liquor and he said it was okay the early in the race because that's our the vibration right now you don't know exactly what it is we'll keep an eye on that end of the afternoon goes on because he could make a difference in how the cars handle and how they need to be fed up of course they set him up yesterday afternoon in the last practice session there was a pretty good temperature at that time the trading conditions change Buddy Baker is in third Wood Brothers car and then 10 car lengths back in fourth Neil Bonnett there you see the interval three back to bottom court and right in that second rib is Ken Reagan number 77 every unit in the Georgia the guys and wheel straightening doing a very good job hanging in without leave work early and business Taramati he's about to try to make a rule [Music] what they're going out of another time peel back and free made a point on pit road a game we have a car pitting from among the leaders it is it is 21 twenty-one it it's buddy baker 1981 or the fastest 500-mile race in history as you watch it live here today on CBS Sports this special fun Daytona here's that jarred here they're changing the right-side tires we just heard Leonard Wood plays at saqqara gotta lose pal apparently they got another problem under the right front and they got that power home he had a little problem they're taking a lot longer so they normally take to make a pit stop so Buddy Baker Burton is having trouble it looks like your motion him to pull behind the wall so they got bigger problem than just powers right now we'll get an update on the Buddy Baker story for you in just a moment but two cards now complete the 29th black Allison and front Garber Oh tucked right in his rear bumper will get sometimes wrapped up in front third spot well then up here about 190 200 to 192 miles now the laps may have dropped quite a bit the track surface must be getting slippery and then he companies recognize that he's got and that is meant Bobby Allison [Music] looking up by govt daily he's out there in the front right now in pale Yarbrough dictating the speed of this rain Richard Petty coming off turn four is in 9th position and carnival 33 as they come to life with any opossums who's also been going extremely fast here he is closing on Parsons that's petty on the inside for six goes underneath penny they're going to fill in one these guys over behind me very well because he's driving very well on the right track which is unusable but you really like to hunt that wall on the other hand the petty cars always work well on a slippery track that's always been the mark local area is closing up on on part number qualities in the inside drew buddy has Neal bought it you'll bodice taking a look at Richard honey just shoots underneath in there so Richard Petty from 34th position tackling the leadership who is it rock and credible stories of petty story and direct in 84 a great Neil Bonnett I view them through their Richard continues will his magic here at Daytona he himself is one at seven times the Buddy Baker story here snap revealed by Buddy Baker car and he in the head one of the look stands on the right front window manhood it would when taking that power down defensively behind the wall if you see Leonard in their work picked the other lug oh they'll have to replace that said getting back out there killed any camp but he has a winning the stakes on a five hundred for the second half look at this freak battle between Bobby Allison the white car the outside on the orange and white car Cale Yarborough there's Yarborough talking back in the second place as they come back to the start/finish line a complete black 42 [Music] [Applause] why for the Daytona International Speedway they taught a 500 warmly right for the moment Taliaferro has a little breathing room there you see him by his lonesome back straightaway right valium is Dale Earnhardt and there you see Richard Petty sneaking into your picture al-anon we've rather ignored but he had his back been in that scene group the whole time and he just enjoyed second spot for Bobby Allison I'm Richard Petty Petty down on the inside going for second place sucks back in again this an all over 190 miles per hour and there you see Bobby Allison back to the plane working in court [Music] kyle petty was the third with Tyrese from the event here's that Jarrett with it pal is already chains entry Street close call what went wrong I don't know Nate I get the Broken Bow spring or something we were able to hang on to the draft with them and that's really all want to do when you turn a lot of rpms they just kind of riding them just right along behind them on this behind me people in front of me so really what happened to run wide open race track so we were looking around all day here's your dad raced a few laps they're side by side and then you pulled away from I don't know I guess lucky rights right along in there he got the people messing with him and and I got lucky and caught a draft and we went on and then got separated from that pack we were we're easily being able to run in a car can really be like a say so uh I don't know I had to either bear the cost is a little bit out of it also yeah Cobb is plenty of the pitch here's Chris the con Avakian Cale Yarborough's pitch the leader coming on pit road Chris Riddell Wilson it's got the side as I bring kale in a submarine rocket stop the girl is here flying on here the wheel stopped and I watch start it's right side tires you almost can tip Krista cata Mackey okay we're Richard Petty's beneath the service now this man has come from way in the back to lead this rate he's doing a remarkable job market rather creating dust and debris from under the front bumper that soldiers of the practice 30 under taking the summer off the front there so want to get more in here so the heat [Music] got one here in the kitchen now you notice that's an all-new team that's been organized just to eat there was a little problem as he came back on the track the man just on the front it was working trying to clean that car nearly stopped underneath it and they dragged him away see some concern down there they just haven't had that much time to work together on the petty thief pit stops taken place unofficially now Cale Yarborough has gone back into the first position in car number 28 over waiting for Bissell story pit stop under green the speed is climb speed record 177 miles an hour 1980 Buddy Baker Baker lost several laps while they work from run and right behind him comes Dale Earnhardt there's Alison and first Lake speed company carnival one the hot selling machine [Music] racetrack as Lakes beat has a problem you see Richard Petty third position running for Terry Labonte running in fifth de Leon row and the sixth position the present time is Richard Brooks in the junii Don let me go Marrs out of 4 [Music] [Applause] here's cale yarborough fighting for fourth position with Terry the body right behind Yarborough now Jim Brickman is honorable here's Yarborough closing again on the fourth place car nobody on the high side cale yarborough pathogen you can swap the positions in Yarborough now for the here comes Tim Richmond number 27 Richmond gathers up his party told me last night he was very skittish about this race today now you see 90 the white party inside all the running anything number 43 Richard Petty goes to second bernard falling to third well into the trap of miscounted penny about five years ago vintage race to believe [Applause] that is a magnificent pull up into the perfect kind of day for 46 year old Richard Petty he likes it with his warmth so for that matter mm they drive on whether race track 95 98 degrees and inside those cockpits [Music] of course killaby old and generated young man to the long waisted champion ready for the lease [Music] [Applause] oops Sally inside and Richard Petty from dirty blood spots the second time today has taken the lead any morning all was the story of paper his father wanted in that dead heat finish a 1959 story the penny story with a petty dynasty as we have known it changes dramatically as this 26th annual Daytona 500 [Music] [Applause] [Music] most of the folks here he is still the king with 198 win but it's a different team [Music] my third daily opera his outfit there's tail let's take a look at fit six and seventh now there you see them the field terry labonte there the inside that looks like Dick Trickle to me great Midwestern scarves but having a pride we've been great sex modify drive around the state of New York sticks his nose right in there [Music] number 17 goodbye reflect fire watcher hampi machines at Sterling Marlin trouble [Applause] latest rundown Bill Elliott in the 9 squad Mary Gant intent is Bouchard Rusty Wallace is fitting part of her endgame the coach Stewart number 88 has just pulled on pit road Carson's 13th spotted deer you see Wallace and going 14,000 with the no-neck monster from Timmonsville South Carolina is winding in the lead he's Bradley picking up with no drop to help him he's running on his own and he's graduating up that leading true let's check the interval between the front three and this man cale yarborough number 28 seeking to win his fourth 500 today ahead of him I'm at Gregg and Nicole has already done now you see the interval around the back straightaway back of Lake Lloyd front three the fourth place car [Music] they're the leaders intern for the interval was five and for ten seconds even five seconds now it's down to four point seven four laps let's go to that Jared weird Danny bounce Richard Carol there's a former driver email pal the holder of car Dale Earnhardt is running in third place how are we wearing the Caribbean position of the practical into the gear everything looks about like we anticipated we just need to change our lip set now to get our dagger and all back right course this little loose kidney and other that everything's okay they all seem to be content riding along there behind pity and Allison is that part to plan yeah the car feels a little better right there right now getting in in behind the boy from the Dale Earnhardt hair I mean around a complete 54 laps here's a report remember circle of years when I was 12 years old I took a 60 mile trip to a race and the one thing I really wanted was a pit head but this little guy is from Willimantic Connecticut how old are you what's your name Billy who's your favorite driver he's got a big Bobby Allison that's the story here they turn up and down this pit fence fans from all ages and from all over I wish they could get in the pit pass and pick the tire to get a closer look at the cars and drivers back to you again this guy is now running third Dick Trickle the number 42 is just pulled on pit road Midwestern champion is now on pit road meanwhile the leader remains Richard Petty Ayers Dick Trickle at number 42 seeking sponsorship there that whole lid is empty on that car unusual David watch but you'll be sending image a welcome Rene service from all seconds KLM is now behind drastic testing up he's pulling away from Tim Richmond who's older running and as drop freeze Oh Richard Brooks is hanging on that fifty-five lobster down the 1984 Daytona 500 one hundred and thirty seven and a half miles have been completed mortal [Music] [Applause] see the standings at 58 laps 145 miles Dick Trickle saying goodbye to this race he is the 8th retiree from the Daytona 500 live here on CBS who are watching Richard Petty one of the most outstanding performances as he goes to win number 199 reaching the closer and closer to that magic Martin gold tortoise attained major league racing of 200 wins by slight trickle even Bobby Allison I am done in a holla short track sir the paper leak sir ninety-eight David Pearson second time seems to be hardly credible but ever you can see from that picture there Richard Peddie is stretching his lead on Dale Earnhardt and Bobby Allison on his own he's just starting to drive away from those two guys following him now Carol Yarbrough is definitely catching up with the third third country having run for a long time on his own he'll be using field at a faster rate than the guys who are drafting which may upset his pit stop Rosie he's an overlap reaching out of the ground at a turn number one there's petty on the outside that two cars Raph shows up in front Harper's that car that had the terrible crash here just last something tricky what what end over end and side over side out of turn number four here you see the second-place car there is Dale Earnhardt number three is pulled away from that core to this Pontiac Ferguson to Pontiac in first the cord is now in second Toby odd isn't blowing down infantry Bobby Allison slowing down he got me a regular pizza exactly a Miss Allison has dropped to the inside of turn four there you see in bottom of the track well what's viable at the two-time winner of this event bobby allison coming down on the pit road here's that jack [Music] Bobby Allison has posted into the 15 it doesn't seem as if he has power your pin goes up they're working to see if he's in digit or losing and repair very quickly but the former two-time winner of in signals a 900 running so well here today and certainly wanted to pick among the crews in the garage area is improbable here at Daytona right now that most Cale Yarborough into third Terry Labonte up to fourth Richard Brook she goes to fifth up to six moves Joe Ruttman in seventh and eighth Bill Elliott and ninth is Ron Bouchard 10 now Denny Parsons Bobby Allison in trouble on pit road be coming here since 1961 there you see rusty Wallace's number 88 being lapped by Richard cutting on the lawn back straightaway and the point that they made another car on the back load an engine right on straight slowing down during the quarter is Karly hert Bobby Hillin Midland Texas driver 19 years old caution is out cautions out there's going to be a wholesale pick flurry here because we're about to get stumped anyway we were talking about last night's mother is blown in from Midland Texas to see him in his first Super Speedway race he almost did it going last year and on the last lap of the 125 mile qualifier it just didn't work out for him [Music] so we are under caution for only the second time today it happens in the 63rd lap the story of Daytona is this man Richard Petty the story in 1984 is a far different story than we have ever told before here is the 1984 story of the petty dynasty the petty racing dynasty that originated in level across North Carolina was never a team it was a family now America's first family of racing is breaking up Richard Petty is moving some 60 miles from the homestead where his father Lee built the first petty car in 1948 through the years Richard lived next to his dad his brother Maurice across the road and all within hailing distance of the shops that have produced nine championships and 261 wins as the break up takes place the clan patriarch Lee petty hones his golf game on the front lawn and deals with the question why time it's no no way that thing's today like it was yes and there's no way tomorrow it'll be like it is today a lot of that changes gradually you don't see it with the gradual change and then something like this comes along and then that just completes the cycle I mean it's no way out but one evoked this change that in 36 years has generated over six million dollars in Percel own why at 46 is King Richard advocating this cherished part of his domain the future is Kyle pity this is it Richard paid typically paid his time for Kyle paid to start in that vein that they go Richard pit Richards 23 year old son Kyle continues his career in the petty shops where it began for him when he was 18 Richard shocked the racing community when he chose as his son's first-ever practice field the Daytona Speedway Kyle responded by winning his very first race a 200-mile preliminary to the Daytona 500 since then piled results have been mediocre at best with no wins we now inherit the place is father vacant father the family Gamble's on the fracas record shows as it turned out at Hill p.m. we feel like and to get let him get out in the last five or six years or 50 years that he races however long he's going to race to let him get out on his own and do some stuff away from the family that he's been into it gave us a chance to for me to really separate on my own almost and I think it was a big deal big step for him to go out but we felt like that pain Enterprise used to win races in the 60s early 70s and when I started racing and kind of drugged the team down to a two car team and that's the only way you can look at it it was it was a stumbling block for Richard Petty and we feel like that with him gone then or me going whichever one left it did it picked up both teams again from their home linda petty speaks of 1984 as the year of decision for her son Kyle I would say toss them come out the worst on the son because he's got a long way to go and a lot to learn at the end of the year and things don't go well Kyle can say well uncle Marcus your father daddy into her thoughts it can be anybody's fault the tiles because Kyle's running the show there is more to this than making room for tile this man Dale in Mike Richards crew chief cousin friend left petting enterprises after their 1981 Daytona 500 win it is said that Inman in the be steady weren't communicating the breakup had begun and it was hard on all concerned when you face back revise what do you mean sometimes you have busy families bad things like that but the single incident which seems to have changed the old petty ties came last October in the Charlotte 500 richard handily passed Darrell Waltrip in recording his 198 win the post-race Nez car inspection found Petty's engine was illegal oversized Maurice petty was in charge of engine construction and Richard had not been told that he was winning the hand with a stacked deck buying $35,000 change was now imminent Maurice petty still lives just across the road still an officer in Petty Enterprises but he is out of the fabricating shops out of the engine room that's part of another lifetime he now manages a country rock band blue clinic funders to the Carolina nights and daily he ponders the changes and I don't think it'll ever be the same again because like say with Kyle coming in that's a whole new generation man Richard we got along together we had our differences we had our problems but with two of us we could always work it out and then you start throwing two and three and four and five people in there then you know it's hard to work out and instead of having like I say instead of having our differences that I just get to side and see what happened the biggest decision that I feel like it I've made was say okay we're going to change the whole concept of pity enterprise Richard Petty's leaving Kyle Petty's staying Maurice pity is no longer building engines you know I mean the whole deal has changed so much and said last three months that it's going to be a completely different world that I'm going out in this year than what I did last year is it for the last 25 years the outcome of these changes is the matter for the record books the constant remains the man that should petty things are going to happen with or without you the Sun is going to come up tomorrow it's going to go down the world's going to turn whether I'm there and what I'm not so you are not going to stop the world the world does not revolve around Richard Pitts Richard Petty revolves in the world so the situation is get if something happens to me I'm not going to stop it the only time I stop is when they closed the door on top of that little cat for the last time and that's it any other time you can come back and do it [Music] [Applause] [Music] they have just taken green we are back under way this the 67th left and Richard Petty is coming back he is in second place Taylor hot is leading there you see them just taken the green Bronco experience the fourth caution today and there is Cale Yarborough directly behind Petty and third a battle of the Masters Tim Richmond has been on pit road for several laps now you were seeing Earnhardt fall back you are watching Richard Petty take command here is Tim Richmond find a fire number 27 and come back into the Daytona 500 meanwhile among the leaders petty is first jabra was second Earnhardt is third [Music] looks like that front group have made a break this is a great flexibility and I'm a corporal to be able to get right with those leaders again trying on that lead drop the fourth position Richard Brook stop providing record and then comes number 98 Joe Ruttman on the back straightaway up past below sighs Garo goes back in 4:43 setting clause ii ernhardt price to move up earnhardt comes to the inside he's trying to find a way to move through life line he was the fourth place car Richard Cookson then comes Joe Ruttman in the caution period another major retiree on the Ray Knight retiree one of the favorites to win it standing by on pit row Brandeis will champion two-time winner of this race without loving today some went wrong in the motor running real good and handling good and all Senate just shut off indicated at the camp we're not sure yet some have said that the track may be the way to end kids faces hotter here today than normal if it looks slick and your father seemed to be adapting to that well the track is slick that's what happens when it gets warm and we were hooked up pretty good too I was very pleased with my car about the only one that really impressed me it looks like Robert Yates lkd an awful good engine for today too and he was handling pretty good too he was strong we are the one that really was hooked up and running strong the first Robert Gates who builds the engine for Doc or Bobby Allison crew does building engines now for Ricker pity him so Allison like to look to him right now 95 mile an hour great crane down the back straightaway on the tail end of a tonight spot is Bill Elliott [Applause] Elliott won the final race of 1983 in Riverside California to decide the Winston Cup in favor of Bobby Allison as the champion last year now there's Neil Bonnett now he's running further back Barnard currently latest run down head of his 12 now you're back with Cale Yarborough and tail has clear sailing and here's Neil Bonnett Ricky right directly in front of Neil Bonnett get well doc doc Richard his crew chief run over a hip on control drop his leg yesterday 300 miles forcefully [Music] [Applause] we are under caution for the third time today after 49 year-old Tommy Gale from Pennsylvania had a motor come unglued just past the start/finish line it looked like it ate something that didn't agree with it and it freaked the track of a little oil coming down the aisle two motors that's finishing that year was the 11th back in 72 he's been running in the 500 to 1970 Almo Langley car number 64 the Sonny King entry having trouble Terry Labonte is on pit road he's running 12th overall in the race Doug heaven they're in the yellow and red car also pulling on pit road Hebburn is an interesting story we'll get to in a bit we would hope modify champion from around Oswego with a supers run [Music] there's duck heparins car well how darius in the field and goodbye for tommy gale back to the garage area early for him this happening he goes back to the 74th lap he blew in lap 73 11th retiree from the day Tim Richmond has also officially retired from this afternoon's 26th annual Daytona 500 which you are watching why here on CBS Sports today delighted to have you with us the largest crowd we believe in the Daytona history life is proud of the southeast is congregated for this day that Jarrod is standing by with Tim Richmond in the garage area let's see if we can get a work as you can see Tim was out of his car and out of the race want him out of my mind here I just I don't know the cylinder head on the on the engine cracked from the outside it didn't crack on the enzyme or a crack from the outside started spewing water out onto the spark plugs which bowed them all out which it can't run like that so supposedly NASCAR is going to have a test of cylinder head just coming Tuesday knows in two days but that's a little late for today that's an unusual occurrence for it to crack from the outside well it's not an unusual occurrence for these head you know we complained about them all last year and now you know it's again here this year and it is unusual for it to crack from outside but that's just to show how defective they really are that we can't get the good stuff and hopefully Tuesday will prove out that the test will we can get the good stuff and won't have this kind of problem it's not good for the vans when their cars we're sitting in the garage Tim it's a hundred a here at Daytona than normal for the Daytona 500 well how was it affecting you how was it out there and has affected stress as far as physically it was fine on myself the race track is you know it's not the best I've ever seen it but it is not terrible you know it's not bad it's not bad at all but it could be better I could still be out there that would make it a lot better for him ken there you are watching the pictures from Cale Yarborough's number 28 following the pace car the safety car through the 31 degree thank you cale yarborough now running first Richard Petty is in second Dale Earnhardt is third Trail Yarborough this is tense wire at CBS control that car looks like it's doing just about anything you want it to do today Cale well the car is sailing put a good camp on the racetrack is awful brief it's awful slick it's habit to Linda crow hung up throw a strike more than I like floor to but I can do about it is David here is Richard Petty a surprise to you coming back 34th position light not giving you a hard run now yeah looks like Richard played it might be the man to beat today he's really running strong and he's gonna beat us today how's his engine too bad do as you feel looks like looks like we put it pretty equal or powered which hard-working issue if he resolved a holiday with a goodly just how free C is that track hotel in it's about a dream since I've ever seen it in February inclusive is also hot today and I think that's that's what walked over the race I could easily all we have another lap coming up under conscious before we're underway thank you very much Cale Yarborough we're talking with a man that's on the point and we'll be back in a moment from the world center of speed Daytona Beach Florida [Music] Hey we are still under caution number 15 Ricky Rudd has come back on the track as has David Pearson David Pearson jumped out of the pitch now the fit such a key part of this game here is Chris Takano Mackay for a quick report Richard Petty Mike curve STP crew is really something Lake speed was pitted next door's out of the race and the last five minutes crew chief uh deep erik has sent men out out of the track they've remarked that's what should Petty's old stopping point this is his no stopping point down here they picked up the equipment they've moved over and I've taken half of the nut of the lake speed to get some more elbow room so there's no crowded last time and Richard Petty's men took this little aluminum plate off the left front headlight they wouldn't say why but the oil cooler is right behind this they want to get a little bit more air there it's really a slick road doing a great job and Sylvia Wilkinsons put dirt tracks the glory she quotes Ralph moody is saying the driver isn't out there by himself if the guy in the pits is any good at running the team he also runs the racecar out of the pits so be it with car number 43 at this point here we are getting ready for the green flag of fall it is 78 laps complete when they come down this time 195 miles down 305 miles to go get the 1984 million dollar great American race bunched up with Kelly burro first Richard Petty trying to win it again win number 199 his career can he do it in third spot Lord Richard Wars John Phil Elliott as they trundle down into turn number one we jump by down [Music] inside [Music] looking around the disco dining car [Music] right with Ronis also in Harry with screws back there in 9th position 8th position is Bouchard next position is parks gilad us as well [Music] there you see them in front of this tremendous congregation here at the dakota speed while you are looking out of the front running car the figure that is shadowing him Richard Petty hold light up on the rear bumper running just about three inches or less apart and over 100 miles apart the navigation probably proceeded cars weaving and dark around over those pumpkin alters the Richard Petty's hook flapping there in the wind off tail car closer we get the more flat the wind is coming off that lead car and just socked him down onto that onto that hood and onto the windshield huge an idea of why they're running these tremendously practical you could also see on that job why they banned oh stop stream because you can see quite getting rear-ended sky you can see Dale Earnhardt right behind him and that was when they wanted to drive ability to the Sudan pilot there's Walter pinellia and right behind him Bouchard and there's Harry Gant of the picture in the Bandit number 33 a sex position there is Rutland and it fit just in front of it safar eighty-one complete daily I brought there now you're inside the car of deal bonnet directly in front of him in the lap car of Jeff bodean back straightaway you see his rev counter there hovering around about 7,200 off yet how's it coming here's to be I'll drop a little bit there it drops down almost dead off 6000 he's going through the turn a little grab you pick up here in the draft and he they did going up to about 7400 flatten up big old ship Neil Bonnett running clunk you're inside of the stop [Music] he's up to a month there he is flat-footed down through there well you can see him just lifting a little tiny bit because it depends on the drop the car in front that he is going to lift that and it's just those little tiny nuances with the feet that make the difference on the Super Speedway when you work in the rafters these run all right now [Music] [Applause] the reason the most that speed is lost on the back again is dumped as they lift up and slow down it's just the pure rolling resistance if the car turns in struck speed up the jump or die number five car he is one lap down currently in 14th this David Pearson in the 15th position is filled Parsons is great facts and 70 is Ricky right right up there the lead as we could come on we could cup the Wallace in Drake's where if we have another caution Lodi could lead the group across the line he was earlier we have Taliaferro where we see you on race cam is it as fluffy as it looks the race cars you know these race cars are awful stiff and of course racetrack is there's no way to have a smooth voice back in when you hit one of these votes from the racetrack if it does on bounce you ran quite a bit so what you see on the camera is what's happening in the racecar arms working like Pistons is he spiked that car down of the current wanted to tell you bro you're in the lead automobile blue sky and clear roads in front of him as he hits into the back straightaway you can see what for the lump yes but on to get that big machine do those really relatively sharp corners here's Richard Petty closing at Fern Creek two of the all-time masters of super speedway racing in our live pictures from the Daytona International Speedway the 26th annual million dollar 500 is just one of the dandy of breezes they've ever had here comes Bob I'll be them we are 84 laps 210 miles I need to go look at that to to train up loose getting side by side they came off the triangle and run up the wall rock blues job let's take a look at the battle now for seventh eighth the ninth there's Bouchard in the 47 working your way up the back side it looks like bondic trying to break out and multiple bond right behind him comes bill Parsons in a 55 penny buck and there is Ron boost rod right in front of you bottom you can see all the way to the lead there's Olin on the webinars 20 within one second of each other of 190 miles per hour Susie mate $12 welcome to deal bonnet running close together the first time they've been together in the whole weekend pulling up on Bouchard goodnight Quran butchart here Bouchard who won at Talladega as you'll recall in 1981 in that dramatic finish on CBS now another move closer falling back and God it's beginning to show some light got there back with the leaders again here comes Patti on the inside Richard cutting down low Yarborough in the 28 car hi [Music] I'll remove [Music] [Applause] see cars collected on that lead glass now maybe queen there the three worst the sixteenth they're reporting even outside the draft three in one tenth of a second apart the trial for 17 degree banging headed for the 31 degree turns you up on your side like you're running a barrel here and notice how high they're running the pragmatism they've started to move up the racing line always tends to go higher but what you may see if that line works up at this dr. Dre [Music] five amusing inside one of the ways he collected all those wins we always had something going to suspension department just a hair heat go down there and find a place to run where others would not [Music] [Music] [Applause] moments of joy inhalation for petty in the last half-hour turned to tragedy car number 53 has just lost its engine while in the lead although they built a 500 petty has dropped on the bottom side of the racetrack and he is headed for the garage area and he is out of the 26 Daytona 500 Cale Yarborough there is now again the leader Dale Earnhardt a second Richard Brooks is in third petty limping slowly on to pit road let the little trailer smoke a few turns one and two they're not part but obviously enough cuz whatever is happened there is calling to complete halt in 199 got me today behind the wall it happened in the first and second turn just a little smidgen of smoke out in the back of the car and then lost power ease it up against the outside wall and this herd thundered through [Music] and oh yeah but by that Canada massively darling majora Khalifa giving back [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] we'll spring on guyliner busy to pick down [Music] one thing to watch Richard Petty is the pulp retiree from the 42 car starting field working here is head Jarrod Richardson he has just conned out of his famous number 43 Richard had looked awfully good for a while that was for a while the only thing about it is we're sitting here we're not running but everything worked perfect I was hardly good how a good and no no we had them all covered not that we could race with the matters remains on Ken Squier made mention of the fact that it seems like on slick racetracks in this track is slicker than normal for the Daytona 500 because of hotter here than usual that you always seem to prevail on that kind of racetrack well I don't know the longer we run the better we would have been I thought put it that way which I getting slicker and slicker and those boys are getting where they came from wide open in the corner I can turn my car wide opening that was gonna be the difference where they really comes down to visit you know see and it's amazing that the man is always able to smile even after a disaster of this sort now let's go up on pit road with crystianna makya hood with waddell wilson the fruity phone he'll Yarborough's car the pressure is off the petty was the only guy to come run with you you got a handle any differently well you know everything's going well for us I'm worrying about her car now for simple fact that Bobby's going up front even bailout directors was up there and he's out and we've been up there as much as anyone you know the heat today is hard on the cars ranging running gear and the tires because you know whenever it's hot the cars get frizzy and in the slide around and we're having problem with that right now the car is not sticking like it should back you can Rusty Wallace in trouble caution is on the track rusty Wallace's number and 88 the foot Stewart car has spun this will bring out Hoxton number four Costin number four is not coming on the track in wonder if there is an upset in the making here today let's have a replay of what happened with a good steward fire petit is out allison is out we begin to see some new faces up on that leaderboard here's Rusty Wallace in a whole lot of problem hey there of a spinning that Ronnie Thomason 41 Ronnie dumb into the heart now must be just about station he had the right trade on Howard he missed him by now Ronnie Thomas is on his third engineer about a $14,000 engine from Richard Petty other day and it's the last nickel and he said it was his bankers last nickel [Applause] [Music] here we have a mass more in road on the pit road caliber we see them coming up these pit crew now they were about ready for some here's Prince Wolfgang kill your armor is in it's a very calm through here unruffled they're doing things right quickly but they do it in an automotive manner radiators cleaned off the weight healed right side tires getting tech tailors talking to one of the flight controls the other one is ours the second can of fuel is another loosening the lug nuts on the left side will be a four-tire change remember with what I will set the tires are getting hot and taking so these guys are not worn out it gets hot they'll maybe go back on the car at another pizza nevada collector you can see how fast and away he goes reverse because this bulb in in Fox's way all that work to Laban second at a car this way and that second thank you can they learn hard first man out [Music] Dale Earnhardt puts number three back on the track Velen hofstra been working extremely well richard childress crew getting Earnhardt in and out in the traditional way remember but more were those on the back of a blue number 15 always make good pit stops now that Earnhardt must be simply dropped off over there because this crew is doing an outstanding job if rusty wall is coming in with a number 88 Chevrolet badly crash we'll be back with bars to come to the halfway point of the Daytona 500 in a moment [Music] Hey [Music] [Applause] let's look again at exactly what happened to Rusty Wallace David Hobbs well it looks like he just lost control that went up t burn the outside wall did the classic came down and young Ronnie Thomas was unbelievably lucky to avoid him and it didn't seem to fade I mean they're even swerve but it put Rusty Wallace out of the race that's the one thing you don't want to do is swerve because if you go where you think they're not you get there that's exactly right bless you boys Elvin now the circumstance this as we watch dog heavens car coming back on the track tomorrow one in his first Super Speedway start today we go New York champion back on the track the standings interesting here all of a sudden Darrell Waltrip is up into the second position Richard Brooks is in third going forth as Benny Parsons join and fifth the present time is somebody a lot of car they're switching some positions around we had a couple of pit stops Terry Labonte is 44 has been shown in six the seven spot was car number nine number nine car Bill Elliott remember mates is Rutland night Bouchard Caleb and sandwich back tenth position you may be getting there's a problem here on the tractor checking some debris just past the start/finish line three of the NASCAR officials are pointing up for the practice down below as to the left looking at something on the courts Hale seemed to have rather long pit stop then he has dropped right to the back of his line they're cleaning up some debris right here in the tri-oval you know three drivers have won their first career victory ever here in the Daytona 500 David tiny LUN back in 1963 when he took over for Marvin Panch in the Wood Brothers car Mario Andretti won it in 67 for the homeland Moody folks and of course Pete Hamilton for petty engineering I have a surprise here today let's go to a net junk we're standing by with Russell Wallace who is out of the race ken Squier if we could pull that tape up where he spun over there we'll let him describe exactly what happened rusty you see yourself going into turn two there now Helen well I think we're a little late on that one but what happened getting into it that's the late part of it but getting into it to discard the Carver's just been running loose all day long my crew is trying to help now to try to get me to run a higher groove I've just run a tool over grew but they thought I tried to move the groove up and just try to make the car a little bit better just trying to save as much as I can because the car was just running so darn loose but till I got up and in the 89 car that gold car was behind me and it just must have broke the draft on me or broke the rear and loosen the car just got I tried to save it because there's a bunch of cars down behind on the low side of me when a spin in front I did want to lock it down to the left and spin and take coupling full with me so I just tried to hold on as much they could it looks like I pretty well had it then it's right the last minute just toward no saving it but till you know you know new rookies reading to tell you to lock him down and bring him down to left and I thought that soon as it happened but I didn't want to take anybody with me right right down on the bottom side of me and I had been you know a bad deal for the 41 car and a couple other cars behind me so I don't know the beginning of race we could really run good but soon as a tire to give up and a chance to start getting the spring start getting hot or shocks or whatever the car just got getting loose but beginning to race I was real confident we were right up there with the custom well if demand is out of it there is one of the Holly County rookies on the circuit in here the green is out our is Benny Parsons the old Jackson prepared number 55 which is been running some amazing laps the last three or four days and crimping from this 500 black and white number 55 corresponds March 1975 winner of this race going low is young [Music] the racetrack [Music] good shot that is bonnet all the way up in the bottom and here is Cale Yarborough trying to hustle out from that traffic he's way back Cale Yarborough well back so intent both along the list as they get ready to the start in some lap traffic there with an including David Pearson directly in front of it and is a long way back now his biggest fear at this stage that front trio or front quartet is going to break away look what they've done to do already leave him high and dry or high and promise well Neil Bonnett went from fifth up into the lead in that short and here pictures from Neil Bonnett scar is up the inside comes Terry Labonte for the lead what are knock there too loved it that is a quick way to lose three positions fact they 107 laps complete this time by 93 to go second [Music] and the team prize from junior judges Boston stables run third and fourth so be quiet please right imagine take a look at that place for just a moment Rutland fallback Louisville Eliot there there's Ron Bouchard still holding on he is the 9th place car to move on to Joe Ruttman in the 98 rod is there a lap down of a new suit Cale Yarborough he's up to 11th [Music] transport trying to get unsorted here go through it does not want those leaders to break away South Sudan they race live snakes Walter perception I didn't stay up in front Barbara has a real task on his hands he wants to be answered back up there why would sleep when he does Ron Ron Bouchard and a mountain living behind the back there is a little bit of a delicate training here's kale making a little bottom side of the racetrack getting underneath that more car and kale picks up Ricky what [Music] huh it looks like 55 is off the pace study Carson slowing down that's part some part of the frame to see him on the bottom for a story way down sodium is that people's half the left pulled out of the sauce line very well any part since 1975 winner everybody thought that David Pearson had at one here's Bobby Allison fought the Matadors second place for any March 1984 there's not going to be any credible report very is slowing down back straightaway meanwhile leaders he's banking Terry Labonte the Texas driver's name is life - like there was seem to be having a little engine problem today maybe they don't allow the crew team Benny doesn't get the car guy that'll be default rate climate cale yarborough has fought his way through traffic all the way back to the front and has taken the lead back from Terry Labonte Dale Earnhardt is in second with Neil Bonnett in third let's get back to the action at Daytona where 122 left's are now completed Cale Yarborough with a hard vintage seed number 28 he's beginning to walk away from the deal he's now picked up about a 15 car lengths advantage seems to be placing the draft on the second place mark Dale Earnhardt with Neil Bonnett running fourth there you see the interval bike from tails far as he sees it in his rearview mirror and right now we're not pulling up a little they can look further back there's Joe Ruttman in karate hey now being shown to the mic position directly in quantum in eighth position number 47 that is Ron Bouchard and now taking a look at 7th position there you see Bill Elliott right in front of a shark none of those sports accompany adult might show well talked into the trade will see Cale Yarborough I'm gonna show you dream stomach Cale Yarborough you see Rahman good night kale into the brass [Music] first one persuades 1968 [Music] came back and won at the 77th and won last year now can we do it back to that honey once we get back the back doesn't you'll be the first man in history to win the Daytona Triple Crown take the poll on holding 50 days 7 days qualifying to then come back and win the 125-mile fortifying race and go on to win the 500 and from these pictures you get an idea of the throng that is here volleyball Robert did it in 1968 on the Triple Crown the second man in history to do a shot does that give you an idea to mantastic Christ we will run it in front of all people he called the other race against race brother before ginseng the tails pulling away like I did like Sarah's hand but it could be distract maybe could break that lead wrong to be counting us in very very good shape there he is screaming around Ronny Thomas once again the suitors crying so hard to make it all work but your laptop they're getting in without lead group come into tribal 26 lines now complete only 74 to go building here now you see the speed the last lap 190 miles an hour and you can look back with him and feel a little comfortable nobody breathing on his rear bumper at the moment on this relative term I mean how far behind him in second that's a big interval here blinking [Music] through the third place car googly marry dance number 33 come down and time we picking up some cars running right in front of a Ricky white car [Music] he has been shown at that position we start Neverland sparking left again by cale yarborough we found on over a segment over once secondly for the second car fourth on the all-time win list Taliaferro 78 all-time winner petty as we mentioned earlier 198 105 and Bobby Allison works 79 wins he is retired from the event take a look at this those folks are really enjoying the stay in Florida the name is suntan today - cloud covers keeping the heat off the track so it may not get too much worse than being because of the heat yah gross lead is now stabilized [Music] first place five and bonded s to get a real tight draft with Dale Earnhardt the extra overclocked beginning to be a cushion for Cale Yarborough that he sits on very comfortably in the state total 500 all the leaders have pitted the leaders have all been on pit road and you are now with Neil Bonnett we believe that he is in the second position number nine Vallely and that's not fitted and Elliott may be putting this time around if so he would give Neil Bonnett first place he's coming to the start/finish line area 138 miles of accumulated and immediately after him came the Rusli entourage it was Dale Earnhardt in now you're looking at number 12 this is Neil Bonnett the Warner Hudson jr. Johnson car and there is the Dale Earnhardt fly number 3 made a very good pit stop number 33 number 9 has been leading-- he is just pulled on pit road number 9 on pit road that was Bill Elliott who inherited the lead in this rash of pit stops Jody Rutledge in Joe Ruttman his Auto on pit road and Harry ganodi senior picture the bottom of a fairies come in I mean out now is Bill Elliott pause and then they been pushed rolling is Joe Ruttman right in front of majority rhythmic still being on the front of his farm right when having a terrible time on pit road it looks like he's lost the gear Dave and he's been in there Billy a minute now what was trying to get out daelin hospit crew yet again to the heck of the time he was only in for 13 seconds pail was in the 16 and a half number close intercept seen as pillbot so that means it's Alan Hart could have sneaked out about a three-second feedback - 33 Harry Gant for just a moment had the lead as a tip stock period of coming under green when they come by this time they will have completed 140 laps leading from aid there we have the position I think that we've got Dale Earnhardt being close by Darrell Waltrip is your announcer second half that I picked up the indeed that is the case there are your leaders a third will be big Brooks at the four perfect day he had a good stop [Music] back straightaway Waltrip just one day ago I ran the three hundred mile sportsman race yesterday and he wanted one at conforth positions about two laps to go not looking for anything that would give any indication that he was ready to be in the hunt at the end and then all of a sudden he fits down hard and flew past Sam yard and Neil Bonnett and charged home to take the win lap 141 141 Waltrip who has never won this race he's won 57 grand national races he is twice from the national champion but he's never won Daytona here comes yarrow moving beneath the Chevrolet number three of Dale Earnhardt as you can see none in-car camera Cale star has now got the wood finished inside they Bella veneer finished who had a bit of class blackguard nevertheless $65,000 for a car you have to crawl in and out of the out of the dollar even open no air conditioner no radio not much of a bargain the fifth caution of the day is just out Joe Ruttman his crash in turn three and four he is all right being extricated from his car let's go like to that Jarrett Darrell Waltrip is making the babies are this Alton period for a four tire team they've already take the right side now to come around to the left side but now let's cook the prismacolor back can y'all burrows doing the same thing he's been in official 40 seconds now and they're working on the inside tires but the top is flat waiting up in the race to beat even for the distance there has to be what form you net the locum and babies here's let's say they race down this road which of those drivers can get out Burt there you see the Yarborough farm and moving around [Music] Frank Liberty they get ready to go yet here is weapon out of his car and walking away Joe Ruttman who was a fourth and third place finish in the last two years respectively and all he is third Daytona 500 carrying the number 98 that his brother Troy Rahman carried to Daytona 500 other Indianapolis 500 back in the fifties spinning down the Bob the track he was running two laps down if you recall to get some problems on pit road and he has a skirmish with a wall and turns three and four that put your weapon out of it today Cale Yarborough leaving a there David and Neil Bonnett right behind him seems interested in having a few frames moved yeah line those two big guys right in his way you'll see his carnold bumped down off the jack any second now and he can just Josh stay out dude there it goes and off he goes right where those times where he's fallen just accidentally leaving now there have been situations like that that weren't quite that easy for instance the teal Bobby situation right last year TOS lobbying the race of him beside ran over another Cruz ad Jack hoes and they penalize him a lap which he felt was very unfair because obviously he hit leave his pit Joe Ruttman is out of the race with car number 98 the talk to Marvin has a relative newcomer here in the Daytona 500 act ago his first NASCAR race in Riverside California back in 1963 when he was 18 finished tenth that day of course he went on and did a lot of racing up in the Michigan area there is one spark of 98 being brought back to our area hard day for them it's all and for two good years and two good finishes kill Rutland winds up out of this one very early we're at last 152 which means there are 48 laps to go and they will have to pit one more time to get themselves safely home today and they have greens and downs in going to be very quick Green winners from the pole here they've only been four and one of them is the man right now who's leading the event Cale Yarborough who won it in 68 from the pole here is Chris economy well if Neil Bonnett was held at the end of pit road he's not telling anybody we just kicked with jr. Johnson and his boys about that Neil Bonnett kind of man apparently like the Supper and silent lucky again wasn't held so much on on the end of pit road as he was just a little concerned he might be held up by his leading adversary in the race here had some tires out this is like all right the brakes and as they start we have kale in front Bernhardt is back in second it is welcome in first played it very cautiously very close to the best all day the fourth spot remains Richard Brooks and in tip is Terry the body as they come to speed another time just completed the fifth caution of the day from one 151 153 under yellow [Music] superiority that his constant all week a fella in pedantry and here comes darrell waltrip to the outside Walter White's national champion controversial figure a win Bobby Allison billions national championship last year he was very magnanimous he came right into the pit row and his first stop was in the Allison pizza congratulate them on a job well done for Bobby Allison this has been a bitter day falling by the wayside among 15 cards that have now retired from the 42 in such the great American race in his job or a lot of turn 2 followed by Earnhardt Chevrolet then comes that Warner Hoxton jr. Johnson car his crew chief whether the wall topography clothes barb another call car there through chief in the hospital day there's the number 12 car pulling up for fifth position number 44 44 is in fifth and it is gone it's crew chief that record was watching today from the hospital bed in Halifax Australian economy really following closely behind Terry Labonte and I do realize that only just had a picked up and although screen have just been cleaned and that gives you an idea what they've done get like doors into the right give you a headache gives you a headache and it certainly gives you a double digit I mean you can see how bad it is with the Sun and the Sun starts get low as well of course we have a bit of a cloud cover today the temperature just outside of our CBS booth stands at just about 92 degrees track temperature well over a hundred degrees now it is one of the warmest 500 key card and then motors expired including Richard Petty AJ point Buddy Baker on this race Benny Parsons Joe Ruttman that here is a battle as on the inside number 33 grant for green and white bar is fighting with Ron Bouchard it gives a little nod to emotions to him yeah I thought that was about maybe trying it out again even a bit of a tow and try and pull adults back to that lead group they are the moment losing ground six cars run the bundle for the lead and 15 car legs back in the seventh position we cover still Elliott and car number nine there's your leader number 28 Cale Yarborough working on win number 79 it would tie him Bobby Allison near wins on the grand national tour if he can pull this one off but more important he would equal the Triple Crown mark that was only been attained by one driver in history the late fireball Roberts 1962 21 hole the qualifier to take the bag and I saw him do all three from right on this very grand just afford here for the very first running of the Daytona comin to the three RFS 24-hour race now bonnet moving up not any much like 444 the body pulled away there you see them back to free these guys displaces again with another 40 on one bullet the 40 on that car spinning it is Richard he's getting his swear that's why one more shot our Patrol is still quite expending I mean nobody really factored to hardrock Bouchard is definitely too diffident and he was very lucky he didn't get hit harder in that particular situation Richard brought Wallace shame he was running so well in a comedian car here we're going to see a bit of a rush down pit lane obviously every was going to top up but there's still too many laps to go for these guys to finish it off 40 laps to go we can look at it from several angles as to exactly what has happened to bring out the sixth caution of the day let's take a look at these pictures first on a wide-angle shot the car just broke away it looks like a left front tire may have broken loose million luckily scraping by there bouchard not being so nothing no place to go from an impact on both cars is really bad lies the best you can hope for actually are something I tell you there should be some pictures here from our cameraman Joe sakoda who is white at that critical part of turn four here's this is from Joe cicadas camel right in turn four and you're right in and they're coming right at him [Music] hey when they give out the envious of Kota the pictures he has taken out turn for this race crack the last three years have been just amazing now you can see why he was doubled and freshly wears a black jacket and halibut now from the Flint let's take a look at what happened we go on sure looks like a tire good cut down there okay would you like to see it one more way what about the in-car camera David [Music] we may find out that it is a tire down if the in-car camera can capture that for us in hot iam tiny bunny in front and right in front of him his big Brooks will obviously perfect view that's hidden the car on the left there yep it looks to me like the time just lets done was it just spewing out from the headers and he got into his own oil and came around the way it exploded I thought it was the left side tire that looked like the right did the camera God just missing the action then we could look at it again incredible how the dice fall in the game like this here's the other in-car camera and maybe is Indian does let go and it definitely comes out of the left front first doesn't explode definitely comes out of the left front and if he's pouring oil down those rear tires he runs into his own oil and then he's away for a very slippery ride those things aren't built to be figure skaters that's they then here comes 47 into and right about now I don't think you're going to get a bit of you the racing actors in that look new we've got cameras flip close-up George crappy old controlling one of those in-car cameras that gave you those four pictures here is that Jarrett with Ron Bouchard well we have dick Brooks and Ron Bouchard here that was involved in that accident first if we can get the the accident back up on the screen team we'll get Brooks and he was the one that appeared to be spending first here he comes dick can you tell us what happened yeah blowed up I don't know what happened something broken it spluttered it I mean you know just fluttered and then just the wheels locked up and that was the end of it I sure hate that firaon I tried to keep it down I had two breaks locked up there but it just you know it was it too far off the turn when you saw Ron Bouchard coming towards you there what did you feel well I didn't see my saw the smoke I never did see him at all till he hit me but I did see some those guys go by well here here we come from another angle down will turn over to Ron Bouchard as they come around okay Ron now you're seeing Brooks in front of you starting that's being your fault did you begin to come into the picture now yes I see dick when he blew up and you know everything was so close I had Harry right inside of me I couldn't move to the outside and then it just gets too smoky I couldn't see where he was and I hit him right in the middle of this whole another thing in the world man can do in a case like this no that's for sure there's no way to slow him down we're running so fast and you know when you can't see where you're going you got problems okay dick here we are from the in-car camera from behind you that fondest card see where it blew up I don't know what it was it just blowed out both sides it just thought they was running good do I we had the car hooked up really great I think that you know we just kind of biding her time Kael was awful strong but when petty went out that left the race for about anybody else this is from Cale Yarborough's car that we were saying right there yeah Mike Hale strong though he he'll still get back up in there but that's a shame man I'll tell you we had such a good run here last year and was having a good run this year I don't we got to get a fix well we're glad to say this you're okay but tough luck for both of you here today Ron sorry about this [Music] [Applause] there remain 37 laps at this point ninety two and a half miles in the 1984 Daytona 500 Cale Yarborough would you pull back and draft behind Waltrip rather than lead here and try to save a little fuel driving by the crash site now carnivore 90 Richard Brooks Cale Yarborough do you hear me Neil Yarborough ken Squier do you hear me go ahead well we'll use continue you're in second place and we relaxed running out is about ninety two miles to go now try to save some fuel well y'all gonna have to thankful I gotta do here now [Music] what is the range on your car how far can you go we go further six left six laps so one more lap you could prop your tank you would go home [Music] before the great caused by gas profited off in shortening a rear quarter cup destruction but thank you when they come by this time 165 laps will be completed there will be 35 laps 87 and a half miles to go and David they're within range of the checkered flag yeah but off this long course and they are now within range of the partners is going slowly like this to happen to use much fuel they could go in and top off now but they're going to have plenty of time so our CBS coverage will be focusing briefly on pit road here because they should be coming in quickly topping the tanks and putting their drivers back out there you seen care with his arm I'm trying to get an extra scoop of air inside the car because it is pretty hot in there Dave is 90 I'm here it's about 125 inside that car and any air you can get in is very well but you can't put your hand out when you're doing 190 because it pulls you up Waltrip is in front trying to win that first Daytona 500 he's been very easy all week hasn't it too much to say but yesterday when it counted he came through and won the prelude to this event the sportsman raised the goodies 300 Darrell Waltrip the most fish owner here come all the leaders on to pit road coming in couple of lap cars they may wait a lap now they may have prepped themselves because they're showing one lap to go one lap or they're going to turn them loose I think that told them by suprise I think maybe could it be at least two to go we ought to get some reports with the pits because this may change the story dramatically here here's Ned Jarrett we're standing by with Jeff Hammond the crew chief own Daryl Walker Smith can you make from here on yes then we got to got a thank you later you can get your good gas mileage about all day so well with the amount of caution that's been run here last few minutes we can go all the way when many of the cars did choose to come in and top their tanks off you didn't know we got everything figured pretty close but right now we can go all the way and were to stay up front very confident is you can tell now let's go to Chris Takano Matt who is with what L will well what else standing a few feet away but they just jumped up an ear because they've run the yellow flag out again what else they're going to go around one more time will you have a chance to stop we're going to stop this time and top the car off so we can make it the rest of the way okeydoke there you have it from failures crew chief but look for a moment or so the race we get the green flag this time by but such is not the case down indeed that is the story they have put out one lap to go they had a one lap indicator on the field now they are taking an additional lap for Yarborough that'll be a break you will pit and come in and then he'll probably be on the back of that lead lap we'll check the other cars to feel that they're within range of the checkered flag from here situation is there are 165 laps complete when they come by this time there will be 166 laps complete 415 miles will have been run 34 laps 85 miles remaining that's a bit of a break the Darwin on the other hand he did in fact do 38 laps on his first if not 36 so he probably could have seen this race out now what's happening is in turn four they are spreading that oil dry that kitty litter they put down to pick up and they who is that have a drop from a car we're watching Taliaferro come in right behind ten Reagan at number 77 Reagan you're inside tails car [Music] here's Krista cotta Maggie Caleb brought will stop its gas and wind yield we've got a stopwatch out of the rocky banks there he goes five point five nine one hundreds of a second five point six is right there you're ever in and out you all wanna wish you plenty and that's the last crew will see of kale unless they visit up in victory lane for the garage are 166 laps complete don't be it down one lap to green they are saying well this one has popped the engines on so many leading candidates to win it today getting set for start now back on the 150 lap rundown 90 Richard Brooks was running the tale in the lead lap and we had at that time eight cars in the lead lap we now have six as cars numbers 90 and forty-seven have been retired a lap down in the seventh position we get booed I'm the eighth position now is Ricky Rudd the ninth position bill Parsons we get ready to resume tenth position is David Pearson 11th position Ridley getting set to go year once again watching the field up there you see David Pearson 1976 winter down on the inside silver foxes won 105 races Paige was quite honestly their adrenaline to the heartbeat will be borne out it was the beginning of this race because this really is it we're now talking about then relapse pressure six cars all in the fight to win the Daytona 500 the green is a leader coming to the line is number 11 Terry Labonte Neil Bonnett is in third and fourth is Harry Gant and the hal needham team number 33 cinnamon squat I believe should be number [Music] he's been running right there with the lead back all day we improve on lockers as issue is kaylee are arriving to fight his way out of lap cars for blocking just in front of it now there's kale and right on the inside is a lap car they go through the speedy dry that's just been lay down Bill Elliott is running just in front kale price to dip underneath him as they come out to trial Yarborough running Elliott on the inside and he has him just going by he closes up on Geoff Bodine Blackfyre bow dine directly in front of the Oberoi he continues his assault on the summit here in the Daytona 500 liters back straightaway Waltrip through the 11 the blue and white 40 cause if it's upon they've made a break from the rest to build let's go quickly to net Jarret him we talked to Jeff Hammond the crew chief on Walters car a little bit ago he was confident they could make it they didn't come in and one reason they didn't Cheryl Davis is starting to get mileage here empathy and fidget if he doesn't make it all in your children's is that right that's the way they they've got it figured if you rent that against your going to put it all on me but he's not going to we're getting excellent gas mileage today well there's further confidence in this sentence graces a lot of pressure there lose the race and serve the papers on meanwhile Kalia bore grow up to fourth spot having good disposed of a learner breaking ground on Java and our again Yarbrough now showing the horsepower that Waddell will see develop there he goes by the bandit Harrigan the Waddell Wilson prepared virus blind on pit road as Neil Bonnett is on pit road number 12 on it comes in your wisdom heartbreaker for here here's Chris what was in the left side tires here and the top whatever chance you had of winning now is out he just goes right through it working hard right for Neil Bonnett was rectory [Applause] 170 laps complete 30 to go Waltrip is in front Terry Labonte is in second neither man has ever won with a tone of 5-under closing ground third place man the present time is Dale Earnhardt's number three but here comes Cale Yarborough out of fourth as we get down to the decision [Music] [Applause] cale yarborough here with him he's come all the way back to second place there lying in front of n' Darrell Waltrip Waltrip has had the most terrible luck in this race he's never finished better than fifth and that was in 79 correction in 79 finish got seven cylinders and was able to come in behind he just hasn't been around very often the end of these things here he is out in front the Warner Hoxton jr. Johnson car is lady who tail just collected the David and he came up through number 33 Terry Gannon the fourth place panelist any missteps behind his leading group as you say one of the cars depart for the Miss victim canary gap who tagged out he holds with it and he dragged him up so now the four cars train they learn how to now make it slow drowned on them as is Bill Elliott at the board the one remaining competitive poured out there so we're going to end up with a fixed card money in his hand open Oh Kyary opposite engine coming to the trial a car smoking a lot through the trial and yellow is out caution is out for this car Christ's work went off near my paradox Neil Bonnett crossing the line now to put a lap back on the lead group and he conjoined that sixth card drop Lee trying to put bond and white back in it Darrell Waltrip in whoa Daytona 500 he also what did they get these guys made you guys the posi the crucial time six seven slowing down here's Krista kono machi jr. Johnson did some things a moment ago that a kid does when he goes to work for the first time in a gas station he swept up in any white windshields because Neil father was behind an accident and then after the green flag Nevada car has a soft let's retire came in the pits and was 99 percent of a lap behind on this yellow flag is now going to let Neil Bonnett go around and get on the bag and add to the excitement of the finish here now down to your net we're standing at terry labonte fence where dale Lindeman the crew chief is waiting for him to come in they planned a four-tire change and I expect that we'll see all of these frontrunners come in and put on four new tires and take on a full tank of fuel they were not concerned about the fuel but they'll put those fresh tires on because they're cooler will be for the track a little bit better give them a better shot at running for the roses as we get down near the end of this content the only Chrysler products feel buddy Arrington let's go at a hundred 76 laps the laps remaining now stand at 24 Harrigan did gold bandit number 33 decides to be his tire change now theya Waltrip stays in front Garros the second there is a body maintaining her the spring ernhardt up support also on pit road is Bill Elliott here's Chris Harry again at the cool calm and collected snowman into the changing the right-side tires for Mary again very careful in the wind feel the Sun is setting now getting down to the term one is quite a glare the nuts are being loosened on the left hand wheel NASCAR regulations have been only one jack to be used so the you exercise has to be complete on one side the board begins on the other side as to the leg design of the car stay at rest in the pin and okay Harry head back in the competition and he is on to us for today Chris Mary can stay right up there the leaders throughout the afternoon Neil Bonnett is back in the bits of other time water break provided he will now be a serious factor to win this 26 Daytona 500 live today on CBS take you to Michigan International Speedway [Applause] [Music] in 1984 the International Race of Champions returns and you'll see it on CBS [Music] [Applause] let's see if Waltrip will gamble here and bring the car in safety car has them until out of turn four a lot of oil a lot of penises you'd call it down here in the trial to make that a bit slippery the first time around water this time by 178 whacks 445 miles complete 22 laps to go just 22 laps through the decision on the 1984 Daytona 500 stay with us for the finish [Music] [Applause] [Music] there are six cars in the lead lap as we come down to the finnex the most cars in the lead lap previously to come to the wire were five cars in 1981 when they were led by Richard Petty with Bobby Allison then in second Ricky Rudd third buddy baker fourth Dale Earnhardt fifth there you are with Cale Yarborough and there's the butterfly for good luck there on the dash tail Ken Squier again at CBS race control and you talked to us yeah Bergkamp okay now how do you feel about it from here on in if you got the horses to contain Walter Brian real good job [Music] take a look at it I don't know whether to you know go ahead and plot a breakaway up to here with it myself er what happened to make she left what about terry labonte in the 44 he's right there behind you and that Dale Inman car has been a sleeper all week Dale I just have to make a decision well that's cale yarborough proudly writing second place a year ago here on CBS you saw him call he's got at this juncture of the race and go on to win the Daytona 500 somewhat different situation this year with so many cars in the lead lap so many people eligible good candidates to win it all a good cause in the lead lap - here's net John did we're still sending in Terry Labonte's Pitts we're seeing Bobby Labonte who is Perry's father standing with two towers up on pit wall ready to change those tires we've speculated a moment ago that most of the top drivers would come in and put on four new tires as we see that didn't happen it's been sort of a cat-and-mouse game down here if Walter Peck come in or if Gail had come in then Labonte would have come in they were prepared since they stayed out there of course the 44 car the crew there chose for him to stay out there also but they're still cocked and ready just in case and one of these laps are one of those decide that they want to dip down pit road and take on those fresh tires now for Harry dent Neil Bonnett and Bill Elliott all did better come in put on fresh tires we'll see what kind of a difference that makes if the others don't come in 180 laps 20 laps ago 50 miles when they come by this time there'll be at least one more caution and the situation is this not six but seven cars are in the lead lap as Neil Bonnett stays there bonnet able to change rubber and get back out and so as we stand now number 11 Waltrip is in front the Tennessee driver then comes Cale Yarborough second Terry Labonte third Dale Earnhardt is in Port Perry Gant is in fifth Bill Elliott is in sixth and going seventh is Neil Bonnett those are the front seven cars all in the lead lap and the laps any left David Neil Bonnett does is villa in canal to be really friends having fun on board you done pit stop that is assuming the time the right sides and everything else because what we have here is a clash as we saw one week ago live here on CBS we have about 50 miles it'll be at least another lap less than that north at 20 laps print which Neil Bonnett one last Sunday as you saw it live here on CBS in a dramatic finish he laid down one Ryan and goes up as intense as anybody could have a distinct advantage starting off and of course yesterday in the sports the race we saw Darrell Waltrip for the win off and that a bit stuff just bride that he has changed guys and the other three drivers had not here's Cristiano Mack well Neil Bonnett is 18th in line on the track right now and in the same lap with the leaders so it's coming down his experience in traffic is going to come in handy here for rookie were in that position with a fast car he'd have a lot of trouble fallen it's got to get through those slowpokes to get up and take a shot at the leaders another bit of trivia here Cale Yarborough hasn't worn out a single tire today but he's changed 16 of them back to you Ken there's the Neil Bonnett car line six on the field of a black cars will drop to the inside Marzulli laughter for money outside and he is he his seventh on the field he should thought sawed off in about seven degrees hi Lane all lap cars pulling down to the left-hand Lane but of course once the racing starts they then tend to spread all over the track and of course it does make it hard if you get behind some of them and the your immediate adversaries are pulling away with a clear track one lap to go now we'll see Neil Bonnett pull up they crown other leaders that top line Java right behind Darrell Walton getting ready for green next time.bye Taliaferro how does one feel when you get out of a race car after 500 miles where you feel like a mech tool for something going over you you're real exhausted enough you know because you have to give a hundred percent physically and mentally for five hundred miles and it just frames you dry take you to take you about a week to get over one when they come by and take 3 182 laps will have been completed and there will remain 18 to go 45 miles 7 cars the lead lap back to the eighth spot is Jeff bodean the line in the five car in the ninth position is Ricky Rudd what a comeback after that horrendous wreck you had a week ago pets are the top rookie here is Phil Parsons the 11th position is Pearson default position is ridley 13th is Reagan 14th the Sterling Marlin 15th his pawn 16th is Mike Alexander 17th is Jimmy means Dean Roper is 18th greats axes 19th and Dean calls his 20th whatever in 21st block 20 seconds 27 23rd as they get ready to put the green flag back on it and sprint to the finish and is this grim 290 lat 18 just coming up while supplies [Music] is making a real flying start there leaving everybody else way behind and David pistolero flooding in behind it first there's Pearson right there kera Pearson the 16 car wanting a look here comes Yarborough by the Silver Fox chasing the two-time champion Darrell Waltrip is a depressant for everybody else they must have been 50 off behind the dark they crossed the line reeling in Walterboro at the tri-oval and there are seven teams ago on the move comes product see him trying to drop inside [Music] the body remain sending forth this Dale Earnhardt there are your leaders Darrell welcome now making his remember winning today taught a 579 he finished second when Donnie Allison and kale got right here in the back right away Richard Kenny came home for winter Darrell was second AJ point third one the early retirees today out of four look at his hand shuffled on the top of the wheel as he tries to maintain the pace at some 190 miles per hour Yarbrough hitchhiking on the rear bumper of course this stage you've got to tell whether in fact he wants to leave now before the round the leader and the last two major races lose out of now also we have pyrotechnics in the last laps here at Daytona and we may be getting central one again now let's go back to third place there you see number 44 incurred Labonte in fourth that is Earnhardt and in fifth is number 33 again and in six steel bottom in number nine Vallely ears product closing on her again [Applause] flyable now 185 laps complete 15 to go if we get out of there without serving missing offenders flail be a bit of a surprise [Music] [Applause] we'll be with you straight through to the checkered flag from here in our CBS live coverage in 1984 Daytona 500 one change of position bonnet has pulled up after again he has gone to fit cannister six Elliott is in cars in a bundle trickling away Walter Kurtz Yarborough second Terry the body stays third all back together as they come out of turn four 70 drivers trying to win the Daytona 500 any one of which could witness race Taliaferro second place down into turn one probably saving it wanting to use Walter for slingshot at the end they may strike getting aggressive here waltrip not knowing quite what to do with it stay at the leading minds lipsmack of the bus neil bonnett who is it about you want to get just a bit near the front the Miss America on a lot here to the inside pulling up one that's word aren't going to third pulling up into port taking a squat it is Neal bottom and here comes Game five and they get through and dropping back into the sixth position goes carry the body during the body made a little bit wine going through tunnel Neil Bonnett how do you know where to go and a shoot out of the finish line if they talk if I come down in the end the wire sticks on a 500 I can't say look I want to possibly do this I posture that I'm going to have to work I'll split second anything I'm even going to be the biggest hero year or so or the biggest doesn't doubt the decision time Terry Labonte has scraped the wall number forty-four he's falling off the pace the day alignment crew the Billy Hagen car number 44 has just punched the wall and he's down the hill he musta had a problem stop he went very wise does a lot before that maybe he had a tire going away or something now there are six Terry Labonte he drives so well it just doesn't seem to be able to whip running rape when they come by this time there will be eight laps to go a million dollars at stake here's Terry Labonte on pit road they've done that wall what a sad moment for the Texan Gerry Lombardi who is driven such a great race today something had to be missed Yarbrough still in second holding on to Darrell Waltrip here is Neil Bonnett maintaining 4th position a quick word from Ned Jarrett they are changing the rust on tires fully get it busier metal away from the tires here but they did you say this particular out of the possibility of winning this race in Texas relative leaders going by now so they're going a lap down they got a problem over there so too bad for turn the body they put a 500 ending in a six drivers six white teams hate to see anybody lose out this route but you'll only remember the winner here they are back straightaway Yarbrough sitting there when a marble is dropping third and now down the inside very damp position on the Obama that they locked up slide my bongos one rig Nicola way here comes him try the low line there underneath wheel but we went round the outside there the same place about three laps ball touch back in Yarbrough still waiting inside pass outside past going into three coming out of court they'll all free a lot of racetrack he's sizing things up we're deciding where he wanted to take that shot remember 79 right there where it happened cale yarborough Donnie Allison crashing spinning playin it we'll all right here and settle in for Richard Petty six out of four out of the grass they maybe I'm wrong a walk [Music] 194 laps as you see it from the Goodyear blimp enterprise have now been completed there are six laps to go six brake line each of them confidence they can do it if they didn't have that confidence they wouldn't be in those chairs [Music] - under by Cal Yarber making a bit of a move on there Darrell wanted right behind him they learn are coming up final part from that Jarrett for Jeff Hammond Walter poofy yep he's been leaving this baby where he wants to be miss get that in cause you told me a while ago already enhance it he's hearing from girls and he's going to try the other guys out to pick the best place you don't know okay you can see that he was listening to their old one ear and trying to talk to us on the other that they were going to feel out the competition he doesn't really know where he wants to be what they are versus oh right Alan Hale where you wanted to be in where he wants to be right now the last auction he told me that that's where he wanted to be as in second place and it seems to work in second in the blue serration always third and ended up second and the second place man won that way so we just have to wait and see what he decides to do because he's the one who knows what the cars going and what he's capable doing what's he saying he isn't saying anything right now okay backing you can honey by 196 laps will be complete there will be four laps to go [Music] having another go to try and get round the underneath of me about having nothing of it these guys have evenly matched [Music] it's going to be speaker very disappointed people out here did the juban 35 wheels off the laps that's the sort of thing that can catch all your plans you can lay plans all day and then a guy like that the $41 would be right where you want to be on the last lap the whole thing and yet you know that the leader is sizing up those lap cars looking around that track keeping track of them to try and contain those men behind now if you look out of Cale Yarborough's park and he would give anything if that butterfly had wings that could really fly anything to help here I think laughter they're about to go around here's probably the last obstacle before being great for them there is another that I don't think I'll make my Swiper 190 miles per hour and they've really slowed the pace down 190 back straightaway there's clock Flyers number 17 seen past the field goes back to the three Yarborough closes a bunch of a hole on the inside he wants to go he's going to go around late has done down maybe because now holds it drama here comes back to second throw no thank you for Lana [Music] my miles remaining for a million-dollar purse lie and share it gets divided among volatile of course here is Yarborough they respond at my fort right behind her and Hart who's had a marvelous day right why next time bye [Music] 130,000 coming to their feet they said this could be the one to remember it was fantastic 76 with Pearson wanted over petty it was great in Southern Ireland petit came back last year Kelly was an amazing woman last lap to set down Baker and Bill Elliott came off in second place this is that the last lap America Walter still deployed first Navarro in second Yarbrough edges to the outside thanks wait away final time not only inside the movie log here he comes up the inside it is Haley Yarborough taking first as they get into turn number three for now be inside your concern viola earn are flying for second and trying to find a place around there humming the finish line and collide it is he started again [Music] thank you hard [Music] carry on bro back-to-back in the first man since the late fireball Robert so when are they called a purple brown now halted real lazy love second place as well Bernard told us to congratulate him and wave to him it's over marvelous race and again the executor in the back straightaway Haley are bro this must be a thrill what equation over on that car such incredible power today well this car rental is a farm zone and everything is with orders [Music] Salem begins oh my Florida for goop flavor is horizontal Richmond Virginia for you next one and a half mile and Rockingham weren't you worried about those guys out back well yeah a little bit worried but I had to be permit and we're here to do it with well here he is coming down on the pit road waving off those who try to go back to the large area and one power alone regulates the pit crew and we have a photo finish to look at for second place in the various pit crews all applauding as KOCO 5 having one and you can hear the crowd now over the edge a nice look at this battle for second that's Earnhardt of the yellow card inside Darrell Waltrip on the outside first across the line Yarborough and it is Dale Earnhardt for second place and now you are driving to the most hallowed piece of turf in stock car racing if you are driving to the victory lane after Daytona International Speedway there's that Jared standing by some 100-150 photographers just to the right he's waiting to all get pictures for newspapers around the world up this man Cale Yarborough is with that journey he's trying to conjugate a safety paraphernalia unbuckle tail another super run if it didn't work from here buddy thinking that I'll tell you this Hardy Chevrolet just did a fantastic job what elders had to call working so close we never had uniforms plus 11 you know like really drive it as much of the front well you got that move down past I've been working on a long time then well they certainly half to him and I'll tell you when you work on it that long and Amanda perfection that he is it results in being in Victor Lee 1962 he has come to Daytona let's look again at the pass for the lead as Cale Yarborough gets out of the saddle after this great victory here is the pass that gave him the 26th annual they tone a 500 Darrell Waltrip on the outside well at 1 L Wilson ended in that car of Caylee Ava's just seems to have that much more hard about anybody else fouled it must've been sitting there just well Pig sick because it's just inevitable the whole week the whole two weeks that was going to happen when it sure did look at Bill Elliott giving his all again on the outside in his car in the back of that picture Donald Walsh is getting his old ticket or his arms through the way going like windmills as he crossed the line talk about heart let's go to Chris Akana Mackey with Darrell Waltrip well Darryl that had to be a tough last lap for you what can a guy do with this racetrack when he's in the front on the last lap well you know you got no chance so you might as well if I'm going to have to get smoked off I'm going to be in the front I couldn't pass him if I was behind him so why following I decided to stay in front who knows maybe they got sideways maybe the thing would have skipped a little bit or something would happen and I could have beat me but I knew what was going to happen in you know I didn't seem to link it and all upset about it okay tonight next time valve ken average speed 150 miles per hour is Cale Yarborough is victorious defeating at the finish line Dale Earnhardt was a third spot coming to get to Darrell Waltrip fourth at the line today was that car number 12 that just hung in there Neil Bonnett and fifth as we get down to the finish was Bill Elliott [Music] like that I could have passed Darryl and maybe maybe beheld him off on the last lap I didn't think probably could get around me but I felt like I had a sure thing sitting there in second and if everybody would let me stay there so I kept watching everybody and had they made a move earlier I would have also but uh it ended up just like our planet Yarborough's victory would be enshrined in the record books kale was the first driver since fireball Roberts to win the pole 125 mile race and the 500 in the same year and he would be the only driver other than Richard Petty to win back-to-back 500s to that point overall it would be tails fourth trip to Victory Lane in a great American race we have guitars and more horsepower one thing just went well for us and just happy to put on over in the record book I would love to be anybody not only there didn't matter who it was I still wanted to beat them and win the race but to me it was there for NASCAR classics the 1984 Daytona 500 I'm Steve Byrnes thanks for watching they are way my 1984 Daytona 500 you just lost control that went up he burned outside wall did the plastic came down and yeah [Music] he's got it again
