winning side of the ledger Richard you were feeling very badly on the eve of your 900th race you're qualified 10th what are the chances that you're going to be able to win victory 196 here today well I don't know right now nobody's wondering race our chances as good as anybody I'd like to start it a little further up front but we've got 400 laps if we run good enough we can catch up how you feeling I feel good today it was just a cold miserable yesterday but I think I rest a little bit yes sir I'm feeling fine right now from the Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway superstation WTBS and motorWeek productions preset exclusive live coverage of the Richmond 400 brought to you by Chrysler Plymouth engineered for luxury quality and value Chrysler Plymouth and by the makers of skulls and Copenhagen four-wheel tobacco pleasure without lighting up a pinch is all it takes one week ago back stretch Daytona International Speedway and one of the most brilliantly executed races in his career but Timmonsville terror cale yarborough scoots to the inside takes the lead and comes out of turn number four with three men trying to shoot them down but at the line Cale Yarborough held them off to win the 1983 25th annual Daytona 500 it is our great pleasure to welcome Cale Yarborough to superstation today Cale a whole lot different position today from one week ago well it really is Ken but it's been a good week for me and I'm anxious to get back into racing and right here working this race today is really going to be a treat I think we got a real good race coming up two-time winner of this event 1977-1979 Cale Yarborough what's it take to one and a half mile as compared to a Super Speedway well this this racetrack is a unique racetrack it's only a half a mile in length it's a very very narrow race right it gets slick during the day and you got to have a car that works good for you all day here and it's a racetrack that you probably have to change your chances several times during the day and and even change your lines on the racetrack so it's a racetrack do we in here you got to work at it well thank you Cale I'm Kent Squire working with us down in the pits today standing right alongside the man on the pole for the second straight week here's Dave Despain with Ricky Rudd how's an hour slower here at the Richmond that it was at Daytona but the face on the pole is the same Ricky Rudd 13 times the pole sitter has won this race what are the chances this will be your first grand national victory here today well Dave I feel like our chance is gonna be good on a short track the place to be out front and I just hope I'm gonna try the best I can to keep this Piedmont Chevrolet out front of this pack and I'm gonna have my hands cut out for him there's no doubt about it on the pole Ricky rod back to you Ken Squier outside of the front row is the great upland california campaigner and standing by as the well-known Motorsports journalist Joe Whitlock with Joe Ruttman Joe Ruttman excellent run last week in the Daytona 500 today in fact the short track grassroots racing where you're supposed to be a real highly regarded competitor what do you think well I'd love to have it to come right here in Richmond we've run extremely well and it's a it's a shame that maybe Cale is down here with me to give me the encouragement to run on that last lap with him but I'd like to say you get this opportunity to say hi to my wife Harpo and their girls and tell them that dad's gonna do the best he can in the race okay good that's Joe Ruttman starting in the third position today is Terry Labonte in car number 44 and Dave Despain is standing by with him a brilliant Drive last week in the 500 from 41st starting spot to 6th finishing spot Terry Labonte it's got to be a lot better to start third what's the strategy yeah it is a lot better at least we don't have to pass news many cars this week how you gonna go approach this right so you gonna go right after the leaders well I don't know I think you know just wait and see go there thing after everybody gets all settled in and see other cars weren't gonna do see if we can do Terry Labonte starts third ken one of the key stories in this race one week ago defending two-time national champion number eleven Darrell Waltrip out of control in turn number four loses control 190 miles an hour slams the wall directly in front of Cale Yarborough just missing Darrell Waltrip in the hospital for the first time in his racing career he said he was okay but the next morning he didn't remember anything about it at all Darrell Waltrip has cinched up the seat belt he's ready to go let's get to work from him now horrible crash in Daytona I gotta ask you the obvious question how do you feel and you think you can make it all the way today well I don't feel like I can you know if somebody falls out of the race we're definitely gonna have him standing by but I'd like to tell my dad happy 60th birthday today and that I wish they were here with me thank you good luck Darrell back to you Ken we'll be back to take a look at the starting lineup for the Richmond 400 live on the superstation WTBS after the browns ray Milton is giving the command to start this race race number two in the Winston Cup tour and he fires them up for race number two on the nine million dollar grand national tour of NASCAR race number two erased number one the great Daytona 500 which my colleague today Cale Yarborough drove so beautifully a year ago you've won here twice in this race the weather today is in the forties yesterday for the sportsman race of which Sam hard came off the victory very cold the tires were like hockey pucks temperatures mid 40s today Cale what's they going to do to the cars Kent I think his ideal racing weather this racetrack has a tendency to get awful slick during the race and I think the cool weather is going to have a make for a real good race $200,000 at stake today some different than a few years ago and they ran the half miles let's take a look at the competitors who will be fighting to take the lion's share of this $200,000 purse in our lives superstation WTBS coverage today let's take a look at row number one it'll be Ricky Rudd as he was a week ago at Daytona on the pole up Linton California's Joe Ruttman starts outside of the front row Ruttman still looking for that first victory on the Winston Cup tour going to row number two from Corpus Christi Texas Terry Labonte and beside him the story that's Darrell Waltrip injured a week ago can he make it back he's won here on two previous occasions in row three from Fitchburg Massachusetts the great northeastern Iran Bouchard and the leader of the Alabama gang number 22 Bobby Allison set to fight in row number four Geoff Bodine another campaigner out of the Northeast Rookie of the Year last year and beside him the 1980 grand national champion Dale Earnhardt going to row five from New Albany Indiana former AAS a champion Mark Martin and the story of this race Richard Petty making his 900 career start looking for his 196 victory there you see old 43 right under the flag stand as they get set for the start petty on a losing streak he's lost 42 in a row but he's still trying to reach the magic mark of 200 victories in a career and now let's review the rest of this starting field as they engines have come to life they'll send them out for three or four laps before they will turn them loose today give them a full chance to warm up row number six is Mississippi's lake speed and the Bandit in the hal needham car harry games going to row number seven on the inside is Neil Bonnett the renegade what a great job he did at Dave Dion and New Hampshire State Dion is qualified well beside Neil Bonnett then comes Jimmy solder and Dave Marcus in row nine California's Richard Brooks and Bill Elliott body baker is in row ten the Wood Brothers he here and Ronnie Thomas is qualified well puts Lindley and slick Johnson row 11 row 12 is Tommy Ellis he knows his track wallet Morgan Shepherd enrolled 13 Sterling Marlin and Joe fields Richmond Virginia driver Jimmy beans and temperance the row 14 row 15 and Tommy gale in rows 16 what a story there Kyle Petty crashing them practice yesterday had to put it all back together and came in using up one of his reserve positions each of those grand national drivers allowed two starts if they failed to qualify in the additional year they must select the races and Kyle Petty had a bad date or the Carll up and they had a a red eraser there you see car number seven Kyle Petty and they took parts off a red eraser car off a rent-a-car it is now a rent eraser and I am sure that the Hertz Avis are national we won't say which one are going to be greatly surprised if they win this race but the whole front end is his operetta car would you think they the rates would be a little hard today candid you home to rent a car you ever remember in the old days when they used to bring in cars just rented cars and run them I sure do I could remember that very well did you ever do it no then pile petty car number seven remember he won his first race on a Super Speedway at Daytona 1979 the ARCA 200 but he has failed to score yet in grand national competition but that's not unusual Cale it takes a few years against the kind of competition we have here today well it really does you have the best competition in the world here in Grand National racing and I don't care who it is or where they come from it takes a little while to get a custom visit operation most competitive automobile racing in the world 60 official lead changes in last week's race and that doesn't count the number of times you guys would squander the lead give it away to somebody then take it back as you try to work those cars around and set each other up for the finish just amazing two laps to go there there's the pole-sitter ricky rudd the Richard Childress car why are they qualifying so well kale they've been running just beautiful well they are they got a good race car and course Rick is real good driver and he's doing a good job what car in the pits right now is car number seven Kyle Petty is having a problem and he is on pit road in fact there you see the car just coming back out again remember he is in the last row with buddy Arrington he's driving a Dodge today I think it's the only Christ with a qualified Cecil Gordon brought a Chrysler to the race that did not qualify ricky rudd up in front joe ruttman beside him i would say an experience and in strength you've given to two ruttman the 36 year old from california of this ricky rotties appearing before hometown fans is following starts at Chesapeake Virginia or his dad owned a salvage yard where he had his first race cars built and there are thousands in this capacity house we're here to see him try and win it for the state of Virginia today live superstation WTBS coverage as you look at some of the throng gathered on a brisk cool gorgeous day as we get down cale yarborough what about it if you're in the start of this race where would you want to go at the beginning just hold for a while or do you want to charge well it's if you're up front you need to get in the lead if you can draw hospital get there early and I see Carl coming back out again he had to make another stop something must be wrong with this car there but I think ricky rudd everybody on the inside ken has got a better chance of holding their positions in the on the outside the inside this racetrack is where you need to be on the start so you're going to see them fight to get down to the bottom of the racetrack salutely you're gonna have to find a hole to get in pace car is in worst set for 400 laps are the most competitive automobile racing of the world as the NASCAR Grand National Tour tees off for race number two on the half mile at the Richland State Fairgrounds Richmond into second coast California stolen wall ship drew took third terry labonte drops to fourth as they had turned number three Ron Bouchard on the inside slides his way up through for fifth position laughs complete 399 to go real marital racetrack and you really are it takes a lot of concentration from this really get in trouble with lot of punching a lot of banging and crashing out there one of the experts is our co-host today is kind of racetrack but he's running a limited schedule these days lap number two complete and they're hitched up on a train in what in the second spot Rutland third Waltrip in the 11 then the terry labonte the texan join invent is car number 47 Ron Bouchard and then in the sixth position his car number 22 Bobby Allison there you see car number seven fighting his way up through traffic moving it on James Hill that is Kyle Petty trying to get underneath Jamie McDuffie McDuffie takes it on the outside now here comes Kyle back on the inside he gets underneath McDuffie McDuffie goes back around him what a scramble and backing off a little is 41 that is Ronnie Thomas out of Christiansburg Virginia down to the inside comes number 7 Kyle Petty picking up another spot kyle petty getting the made slick Johnson that time still working his way through traffic from dead up on the end of the field back to the leaders another time and here they come in a bundle Ricky rot in first in second Rutland third waltrip fourth Parvati and number 47 Ron Bouchard the Fitchburg Massachusetts driver is worth Mark Martin is trying to get out at eight number 88 as they come to have to charge three and four main straightaway bid SWAT bouchard six hallasan seventh Dale Earnhardt going 8 Geoff Bodine those green and white colors of the Stokely Richard Petty the tail into that batch as he tries to wait him out on the lie don't think richard will make a move any too early today kale i don't think he will you know richard felt a little under the weather - I think he's just gonna kind of ride there for a while see what it looks like but I feel a little bit of thinner rubbing going on already out there this place you cannot run it without leaning on somebody or a little bit of fender bang and it's just that close and it's one groove racetrack and it just takes some of that to get around here remember it's only a half mile just a tad bigger that I have a mile and they hit over at 90 miles per hour as they come down the straightaways and they use up a ton of breaks out here well they sure do you have to you have to be real careful the first half of the race not to run up your brakes and so you won't have in in the second part so it's the thinking man's racetrack coming around completely nine laps and Ricky rod and Joe Ruttman draw away by about 12 car lengths over Waltrip in that third position the body maintaining fourth bouchard in pit banging of the rear bumper of Terry Labonte then behind them comes Bobby Allison now battle up in front trying to work a little on the outside as we watch number seven just getting by McDuffie JD McDuffie getting passed by Kyle Petty as he's picked up six cars since the start file penny looking for Civil War running robbing some more cars to knock down he's got a lot of running to do up in front there's the battle and it's 98 Ruttman twine the outside unbelievable move kale that is a real tough move on this racetrack and looks like he's gonna pull it off Joe Ruttman from California rep riding in turns one and two and they paced each other and Alyssa hit the middle of one out of two rut leans on Rutland back they come still side by side down they go Richard Petty getting hung up on a car for just a moment on Dale Earnhardt's carbon gets away and keeps fighting his way around it is what been going out in front I think you got to have a car that's really working to be able to make the outside pass here well the buddy parrot prepared card number 98 he has never won a Grand National race but in short track racing he is incredible Joe Ruttman grill he has it hitched up made a magnificent run at Daytona I thought he might get a shot at you at the finish he was right there looking for you Cale well he was he was right behind me when I made my move on Buddy Baker and went with it but I got a bracing end between turns three and four and that was pretty much the end of that 4:48 as they went down the back stretch and now Waltrip begins to move up Waltrip last week blind out of his car and said tell my wife I'm okay but the next day he never remembered it yeah I understand you know I saw a world with Hillman this morning and the thing had a big crack in it so I'm sure he took quite a leak and he's bare forces of evil biggie erasing today well here's Dan he's still fighting his way up through down the back straightaway Kyle Petty working his way from the back of the pack Richard Petty has been by here again right now I look at trial getting down to the bottom that is at 113 times Richmond not here the power of Jim solder from Wisconsin that was just passed by number seven I didn't want to give up he comes right back now pile has come from 30th up to 22nd pet is the 22nd place they can now see him in as he picked off fake cars and we're trying to give you a look at some of the Outback competition as well as what's going on up front and this car qualifying Bart as it did not qualify [Music] had to use up one of his provincial starter's for this race starts at the points in three vias early of the season is utilized by many pile to get himself in this event now there's 98 Brooklyn and he seems to slide that car as he comes off turn four just kick the back end down battle coming up for second place there you see it it is number three Ricky Rudd and Waltrip doesn't look like he's lost a stitch even after that crash a week ago Cale yeah he looks real strong dog candies he's put putting the pressure on Ricky Rudd right now you are watching the battle for second place live here on the superstation WTBS between the most competitive races in the world down and turn number one on the old fashioned routes racing Fairgrounds the Richmond fairgrounds where they've been racing down for some 40 years it used to be dirt in those days Ned Jarrett buck Baker Lee petty and there was some kid always in here they had to throw out of it every two in two races because it was to the gun ain't Cale Yarborough I was right here kids back putting in the dirt days and up in front that car number 98 begins to get a bit of an advantage you can see the interval between the first waste car number 98 right there at the second place car Ricky Rudd about 20 car lengths a lead here early in the race does it mean much or doesn't mean it doesn't mean a whole lot right back in I have seen our car gear that ran real strong first quarter a stop I've done it myself then if the racetrack changes the car goes away 12 laps now overnight correction 22 laps 378 to go behind that that when the body is in forth Earnhardt is in fifth Bobby Allison is in 6:1 Bouchard is seventh Bodine is eight Mark Martin is at night trouble at Lake speed and Neal Bannen and the whole trouble long way to go drivers from 16 states there's car number 2 Mark Martin thank you to move on Jeff bodean now what a battle that one is that's the battle for eighth in position and on the inside that is Mark Martin down low has the spot here comes Richard Petty the bottle racetrack does not get through [Music] squat Shepard I'm back here comes penny right behind it is number 33 Harrigan that's what's exciting about this half mile racing it keeps the action contained out here Kyle that's right it doesn't get away from you everybody here has got a good seat in the house and they see exactly what's going on and it's a short track race to the finish line bleep this next time by 10th position centrist car he's never too eager and you'll go for them you see that group there's Richard pen there's your leader again number 98 it says Auto Club Champion Daytona 500 chip [Music] he wants to make his name out of the stock cars he really had his heart set on beating Cale Yarborough line any part of that he's really running strong here today toki and if he continued to run like this all day he just might win his first Grand National race moving toward the 30 here in the Richmond 400 Joe Ruttman out in front in the second position ricky rudd going third darrell waltrip fourth Dale Earnhardt fifth Terry Labonte Bobby Allison a six run Bouchard is 7 and Mark Martin is running in the 8th position and will return to more of the action of the Richmond 400 on the superstation after the 33 laps complete 367 remaining of the Richmond 400 up in front his Joe Rutland his for second place and it is a struggle that's going on here is Terrell Waltrip Mickey to move in number 11 trying to go but he tricked you out of turn number 2 did not make it here he comes again twice Waltrip is tried here comes Walter bunny inside running wheel to wheel out of turn number four Walton on the low side it is blood on a high side and they've got a problem up in turn number two one car spinning but they keep going yellow is out number 29 they D on spun in the second turn as the battle was being waged for second place Deon spinning his sport which comes out of Hudson New Hampshire and dynamite Dave is coming down the track quickly through the pits he'll take a lap to stay up and then probably hit smart move by Deon qualified well here up from the front row about two years ago cale yarborough as we watch that begin to unravel between the wall ship car the yellow number 11 and Ricky Rudd at number 3 and appeared that Ricky Rudd was just giving up the inside that car's not working at well it did it looked like Ricky was going a little high going into the car Darrell was taking advantage of that it earned him going into the corners but they learn hard it's hard to come up and he was really good put the move on both over good luck number three number three in the pits the leader 47 is Santos yard Paulo citizen all the leaders coming in and changing some rubber out here boy tires are really the issue in a race like this there's no doubt about it if your tires go away it's no way you can drive on a racetrack like this there you see Richard Petty and already you can see the side of his car is scarred from that close competition there's Buddy Baker coming out it doesn't run that much on a half mile but the choir that you followed for so long and set him up he said it by the gun 300 miles an hour fifty miles an hour hey I would have stayed behind me well he was exactly right let's go to Dave Despain [Music] the lead automobile of children but not yet on pit road his crew waiting for him here Terry Labonte has just come in it's a real traffic jam on pit road and that's part of the reason Ruttman elected to stay out one more lap he wants the pits to clear out and then the ruttman car will be in back to you can Richard Petty has come back on pit road Neil Bonnett is there Bill Elliott Buddy Baker in from the other side tires Tim Richmond has come in Jim solder [Music] I really don't understand why Rothman didn't stop then they've thrown enough left's and he should just stop and take on [Music] said the pit road was too crowded but if out of it am I to make that stop well now this will change the entire wholesale change in those front positions well let's see here he can hardly afford to come in naki and we put it too far behind to work his way all the way back up so he's not going to use Joe Ruttman a leader on Carter 498 will not use this first caution which came out at lap number 37 when De Dion spun in turn number two he was able to continue and appeared as if there wasn't very much damage to the [Music] real change in positions believe in front of the second spot - Darryl Walsh who's the third last year's winter day arey gasps afford the so it's a big gamble for the buddy parrot crew car number 98 let's go back to Dave dismay we're with buddy ferret at the Euro buddy why did you not make a stop well in this game you know you gotta you know when the hole will win the poem we had plans our strategy not to bid early because we feel like it's going to be a lot sixty you know Darrell them didn't pit and so you know buddy parrot says the reason they didn't come you got to know when the show two cars did not waltrip elected to stay out and so did Ruttman back straightaway roll them out again after a green flag fell 71 Marcos is trapped behind two lapped cars they're the two leaders beginning to get away there you see that blue number third overall in the event initial report was he had gone a lap down which Overland on the dining car with that ninety car looks shaky to us 1998 a week ago looked like they had any moment already just lose afloat away great driving by Brooks admitted retirement in semi-retirement this year he's going to run the entire circuit here's the situation number 98 is related there's 11 at second spot Waltrip Bert and Bert bad for the first time in his career one week ago and he slammed the wall at 190 miles an hour at Daytona now he's trading sheet metal mile track enrichment project can fight you we saw one car butch literally totally demolished in turn number one and this is the tractor mommy Alison had a terrible crash a year back number 48 james hylton has brought out the second caution of the day yesterday in the sportsman race which was won by Sammy are committed landok NASCAR champion it was called and they had seven cautions and they had miss Rex with the worst turn one foot smoothly just thrash the wall I think we're gonna have a chance to see this again cale yarborough number 48 the hilton car is a little crunched up on one fender we see what happened here here he is he's already factored into the wall it stays up high don't want to get whatever you do you don't want to make any moves from there cautions out second time caution Falls I'm sure bush lemons got a soul ride today he took a tremendous cry yesterday into that first time we have a sword we'll be back with more from Richmond after these message green comes back on in the 47th lap we're now completing the 49th Rutland jumps out in front Waldrop had just pulled into 2nd in back in 9th place Richard Petty picked up one spot since the beginning he is now closing up on Ricky Rudd who set on the pole Ricky Rudd is running in the 8th position directly in front of Richard Petty there they are sailing down into turn number 3 we see the inside of his car just a little dinged up out there but that's part of it well Cole that you get when you run with his size now here's petit again trying to get through those lapped car the track and get a shot at number three ricky rudd and there is what making a move on bowtie new Texan 88 Bodine hooked up into Ricky rut to hold him back here comes petit what a battle out and back meanwhile Brooklyn is pretty well pulled away this is where the fight is there's your leader going through turns one and two the scrap Willis further back we got a big shut up and turn number four Ford cars say how do you do this we'll bring out the third caution of the day and look out will they try to wall them I'm sure you see these front two cars pit this time can they've gone five for them James Hilton Dave Dion Tommy gale and Morgan Shepherd in that altercation kale too hard I don't think Richard Peddie could be too happy where he's running right now Bodine doesn't want to give an inch Ricky Rudd's trying to make up some ground there's no place to go out there I know this is a real tight race dragon it just takes time to where it's take a look there's the shot again after two cars at angle two more just came in and dole on top of them well that's what you get in half mile racing the folks up on the third fourth burn they had pie there's Dave Dion's two number 29 all torn up in the front now Walters was in the pits and Brooklyn hadn't come in yet I really it's going to move Dale earnheardt one of the ports into that second position the car remains Joe the Buick up in front we have a Ford running in the second position the move Jeff bodean unofficially now the third that car number 88 Bodeen driving a Pontiac so we got a mix of breeds up in front they come through up on in now so the leader is in the pits leader is now pity key pit stop for car number 98 you can see him down there just on the end of pit road that is Joe Ruttman and they're changing right-side tires taking on a little fuel like they're holding off on the fuel for now he only need one fuel stop right Cale he's changing all four tires he's taking all fuel hit get more exist on so Joe Ruttman gives up the lead and he'll give that first place to number 15 [Music] what a race last year for dove but Morris really flying before the season is over the Fords were discounted for the most part down at Daytona until when they got the drafting we found out that the Fords done a lot more to offer than anyone giving them credit for it looks like Dale Earnhardt's car is working well here today I've been watching he's moved up through the factory well and I believe he's going to be tough for the days over so Earnhardt has the lead and as we see a Bobby Allison will of second Bodine third Bouchard fourth Ricky Rudd fifth Richard Petty in sick Terry Gannon seventh Buddy Baker in eighth Neil Bonnett at night these are all unofficial there you see Joe Ruttman who's back on the track he's driven both now he's been on the super speedways and did a magnificent job a week ago and he's pretty used to the short tracks and we asked him about what's easier for him what words not better comparison of the short tracks of America and those super speedways this is what joe ruttman said well Bromley first physically is a little tougher on you on a short track like this because are coming a lot quicker a lot more breaking a lot more physical effort inside the car that you know the effort you know it's obviously greater the speed is down so the adjustment to what you can do with the car is quite a bit different Joe Ruttman as you see the he didn't he didn't get first place but he collected fourth in a pretty good case of laryngitis everyone came out of Daytona with a cold last week Gayle kept you I guess though I was so happy I guess I didn't have time to catch you go Adrenaline's still up still still fluid strong so Richard Petty's won at seven you've won at three you're going to go after his record for win at Daytona we're gonna win as many as we can I hope we can surpass that right well there's a lot of kids out here they wish you old guys would give this game up and play checkers or something what are you going to get out of this stuff it is Earnhardt leading here at the Richmond Fairgrounds live on wtbs the superstation today when Bobby Allison currently shown in second place he won this race back in 1974 Geoff Bodine that charger out of Chillon New York is in third going north as Massachusetts Ron Bouchard then Ricky Rudd the local favorite from Chesapeake Virginia airline spots a car that in the sixth position it's Richard Petty and in seventh is butch Lindley now Lindley to talk about if remote butch Lindley crashed hard yesterday and he is mighty sore and stiff knee shoulder harness just tore him up and he's backed out here in break anything but he sure bent some muscles and the Greenville South Carolina campaigner two-time national sportsman champion is driving one of the best loan cars in Virginia a car constructed by Emanuel in sir Bacchus and that car number oh one on this track he has come from a starting position to 21st to now appear in the seventh position overall we'll be looking at him for a moment let's go back to Dave to spam we're in the pits of the leader Dale Earnhardt was one of the grand names in this grand game shot core right are you happy with the way things are working out there you started eighth are you running according to plan well the other thing working real well right now the car performing real beautiful and looks like we're gonna have a good day if everything holds together got her built for 400 laps today don't you we hope and so if they were thing working real good right now that's but more car owner on the lead machine of Dale Earnhardt yeah there you see Dale Earnhardt the leader in car number 15 and we had an opportunity to talk to her Earnhardt before the race about the difference between the Daytona truck smile Richland fairgrounds Speedway well really race cars I hold of a race car and racetracks hold it racetrack huh just drive it like a short track it's a lot different than going down the corner wide open out crackling yeah you have to use some brakes and you know you're raised real close a little fender banging during the race you know to get a real exciting Sunday there he is Dale Earnhardt what a courageous competitor he is the old one is up to the sixth position now butch Lindley has come to the seventh spot as we get ready to resume this race up there's the leader Earnhardt pity he dives in [Music] what laughs to go again that's gonna play go [Music] Richard Betty [Music] [Music] see them right there my head of steam see he only got right-side tires that's gonna hurt him come on ken he should have come in earlier and changed all four tires like everybody else 222 Bobby Allison now takes the lead first and third caution period coming to conclusion as they come up for a restart 59 laps will be complete we'll be working they are working the 60th laughs at the present time coming down out of the corner restart Bobby Allison now has the lead beau dine at second what six puts Lindley the short track driver giving this thing a real stab he could be forming over for the day is over now Wilson in first three and four as they come around and get them back to racing speed how hard is it to control you really have to think about it kale on a restart on a restart if the racetrack is cleaned the coal right now they're the best as they come around this time Ricky right position Richard Petty is moving up there you see five let's go quickly to Dave dismay wait a minute passed out of the turn there's Richard Petty underneath trying to make his way down the back straightaway petty fighting his way up through meanwhile out of the back comes car number 15 here's a hurt heart on the charge just floating through cars Earnhardt fighting his way up and in Barnard taking three cars of the last lap that changing tires really helping her hard as he continues to muscle his way around the speedway action everywhere back to the leaders it's car number 22 allison in front we have a smoker coming down to main straightaway number o two in trouble Tommy Gale getting the black flag pulls on the inside as the leaders dive into the first turn the third place car Ron Bouchard and petty has gone to port and he's going underneath Bouchard petty is beginning to attack Ricky Rudd has fallen to fifth daddy looks like he's ready to muscle it out for the lead now care well he sure does he must be feeling better now I guess going under the shard going into turn one Oh - all torn up in the back it finally comes to a halt let's even bring out a car shop lower than the road waltrip pulls onto pit road yellow flag is out caution is out 47 is dropped back to third Waltrip has pulled on the doctor all the way decided to go right straight through so he wouldn't lose a lap and Richard Petty gets in front of Ron Bouchard you got to have eyes in the back of your head because they are everywhere making maneuvers Earnhardt was making a tremendous charge to get back up with the leaders and now we are into the fourth caution of the day that comes with a total of 66 of the 400 laps completes that leader maintaining first place Bobby Allison in the second place is car number 88 bo time there you see Tommy gales car back to the garage area and his day seems to be done leaders are pitting here in the Richmond 400 sure petty has made two pit stops here come back on the attack another time number 11 Waltrip was in and the hood was up on his car as things now shake out number three after these pit stops Ricky Rudd has taken over there you see the petty car you can see that front fender really was thrashed on 43 he's mixing it up a lot and getting some abuse out there second place car is what in some tight spots already can't but I don't know what's wrong with Walters car and he came in and they went under the hood and also are in the trucks and something's wrong let's go quickly to Joe Whitlock in the petty myths can we just check with Richard Petty's pit crew and they said [Music] okay scheduled pit stops for number 43 petty or at least they're not willing to say what they have in their hand back straightaway coming around as we're under green it is Ricky Rudd looking for his first grand national victory so elusive it's the Memphis pressure and competition at this second spot stays put third is Neil Bonnett who is good a short track driver is in the United States of America today the fourth position is 44 Terry Labonte between 75 bonnet and Labonte is the lap car two laps down number 90 Richard Brooks then crawling back to the he has come to fifth Joe the six at number 98 the leaders the earlier leaders Bobby Allison Carr at 47 are running from Outback they mitad late have to work their way back through and Richard Petty is following wave that pit stop they have the tires we say there there you see Conover 5222 about me Alison trying to fight his way through Alison getting up through starla fall back a little there's the 15 and look at her heart a callous attack [Applause] and 22 Bobby Allison and checking dispositions off he has pulled itself up to a level position unofficially on the race they say that the walls of cars begin to show no smoke out there let's not a Dave Despain there's a potential problem on the car Kirk what's the matter with the engine run on seven cylinders right now are you going to try to keep him out front and wait for a yellow you're going to bring them in [Music] automobile of ricky rudd running on seven cylinders a decision still to be made what the strategy is from here back to you Ken well he's got to stay with it stand on and upon him is Lindley Richard talk to be all over [Applause] [Music] 4:17 is completed 77 of the 400 but it is beginning to dwindle moving in which lately in position the fourth position the 12 [Music] Rutland in number 98 with a couple of laps in between them now 78 laps have been completed and they remain 322 the conclusion as we bring you live on the superstation today race number two of the Winston Cup 1980 national tour they told us Superspeedway a week ago back door cracks like the Richland fairgrounds in Virginia and there is a short truck driver whoops Lindsley fighting it out regularly Ricky Rudd meanwhile back comes number 11 and I think but all go to retire number 11 Waltrip has gone behind the wall go look under the truck into the truck there's something wrong and he had smoke coming out on last before he farted let's go to Dave Despain quickly where alongside Darryl Waltrip Darryl do you know what the problem is I got a whole league and the nothing you can mix to get back in [Music] why are you failing physically after last week's correct [Music] darrell waltrip says it's an oil leak they don't know if they can fix it they're working on it now back to you Ken that breakthrough woloson three and o'lone are side by side under the first word it is butch Lindley on the inside in front that comes Ricky run to take the lead on the outside wheel the wheel and turn three squares it off and he fights it down through to take first place and he's got it now butch Lindley is at home here at this racetrack on ret short very striking he's doing a good job now I'm sure he's awful soul football yesterday's price but Fisher was not sure there's ricky rudd hanging right there Chevrolet automobile now it is a Buick the third position another Chevrolet with Neil Bonnett bad break for Daryl Walter [Music] Joe Ruttman unofficially shown in six position car number 22 Bobby Allison there he is right behind mark Parton number two mark Parton is in eighth Bobby Allison is running in the ninth [Music] let's go back to the leaders at other time much lately Sportsman champion Greenville South Carolina campaigner he's run as many races as anyone here on those half mile and quarter-mile tracks just got particularly favored the super speedways he feels much more at home right out here in that car as we mentioned earlier by Emmanuel Cervantes one of the early stars of grand national racing well quarter mile tracks mangle does a fine job building cars right now at your Woodman is moving back up in here his car really working well and he looks like he's going in the leader set of the making will push Lindley pull it out of the fire here we'll find out with our live super station coverage of the Rick we are in the fifth caution period of this Richmond 400 live on the superstation WTBS today with cale yarborough I'm Ken Squier along with Joe Whitlock and Dave Despain in the 90th lap mark mark and Kyle Petty got tangled up in turn number two they brought on a caution they were able to continue of sheet metal damage what it as done as it's changed the front of the field around again and Bobby Allison at number 22 in a position to run off the point meanwhile back in the pits is Jeff bodean at Lake speed the two cars in the altercation in turn number two that brought out the fifth caution for the day have continued on their way safety crew is also looking overturned for president I'm Darius see Kyle Petty's car let's go to Joe Whitlock in the pits can I'm standing by with the manuals of Bacchus he's talking on the radio right now doing serious wreck yet today manual feeling alright [Music] he had said he got tired you know I'm hoping that he doesn't he's running real good and voice you know we're running infinite we're looking for major sponsor and we have a local Miller dealer and Lee honest opinion helping us on this race and we open look better things thank you my newell emmanuel used to run this race track when it was dirt back that's quite a team back to you kid well there you see Kyle Petty coming on they tracked another time made another pitstop way up on the end by turn four all the cars in this half mile track as you've noted it on the main straightaway sometimes like in Martinsville Virginia they've been half the feel the front straightaway in half on the backstretch that always adds a little big a tea and confusion Cale well yeah they are also Ken they're still working on Darrell Walters card I know Darrell still in the car so evidently he has intentions of going back down well you know the point back right he's worth what half a million dollars the Winston Cup this year if he you're not running for points but he is he's already had a 33rd finish at Daytona that's been setting way off the base not as badly as a year ago if they don't when he had trouble early on in the race but now to have this happen I tell you national championship will go right down to Riverside California they sure can and I'll tell you is as keen as the competition is right now you can't afford a racing championship as we watch Kyle Petty let me ask you this Kelly are but they're the only man in history to ever win the national championship three successive years how do you put it together three years in a row well you just got to work hard you got to have a team you know kin like ginger Johnson's team that I wanted with and that put the hard work in and prepares the cars and just never give up even though sometimes you have problems you got to keep going holding Schofield's car number 92 down to the start/finish line apparently he disobeyed the flagman $10,000 worth I heard they reduced his mine to about five that get your attention all right we're ready for racing once again one more lap and we're back live on the superstation from the Richmond Fairgrounds most competitive automobile racing in the world for you today and up in front from Upland California it's Joel Ruffin and right behind him comes the head of the Alabama gang the leader himself number 22 Bobby Allison still driving with bruised ribs and that terrible crash that he had in the at Daytona the end of the third spot 1980 national champion Ron Bouchard that sensational victory and television couple of years back lies forth to the field and look out because Bill Elliott from Dawsonville Georgia in a Ford is in fifth with Harry Gant the band in the Burt Reynolds how Needham car running six Richard Petty is in seventh as they come back to the line at were race even richer the old pump and pump down at turns dota 2 has all of a sudden Alice and Earnhardt and Bouchard begin to scramble back they come to turn three and moving down to the inside getting a little closer up on a lap car comes Dale Earnhardt that blue and yellow my garden Traci number 22 that car stays in that second position and he gets away by about six miles now there's your leader meanwhile look at the oh one write his way back up through the heavy traffic this guy whatever the race card here right behind the number 75 he's just gone up into the 11th position he's right behind Terry Labonte you're watching the battle for tens now 44 about his intent old one Lindley is at 11 there laughing buddy Arrington to the Dodge as they go to turn three [Music] [Applause] cited his whole one living [Music] Texas 136 feature events of one season down there there's Buddy Baker there's the ninth place car number 21 Baker then here comes ol one little e on the inside trying to reel in the 44 back they come through the turn a little [Applause] he picks up a spot where's it right down in there throughout the 75 that's what's happening they've opened up a whole and driving right through assisted by butch Lindley is Neil Bonnett and now he's ready to work on Baker back in turn three and four to the top [Applause] the 98 car with 100 complete look at Dale bonnet go up underneath puts Lindley 21 stay in there and for just a moment we had some cars slithering to turn one but they gathered it back up again and the Battle of continues at the turn four there's where the struggle is look at the as sensational a week as anyone won the crash among the 16 time trial winners of a year ago then came back and won a 125 mile qualifier right now he's in the box Jimmy saw Neal Bannen an old one [Applause] fights his way back through they stand the nine places Buddy Baker been ten places 75 bought it the old one getting back on their bonnet another time he pulls up the dead there's your leader Rutger now what has it I've been watching and he has a bobble too Tom he's going to be tough here today as a checker game I would say this is just a more intense checker game keeping track of all those lap cars absolutely you've got to keep your mind on work so Joe Ruttman stays up in front Bobby Allison is in fans will tell you that Richmond is a wonder the car builders will tell you what so ungrouped ride someone neglected to tell the drivers they are running this thing like an expressway and the passing has been absolutely intense look at butch literally getting up underneath Ricky what they're fighting for position right now that is the battle for 6th you're watching coming through like a house of fire here he is fighting for sixth place on the inside is Lindley on the outside is Ricky Rudd Ricky Rudd takes the spot back remember 90 is a lap card number three Ricky Rudd back into six just moments ago that whole one made some incredible maneuvers and picked up some spots watch this there's Richard Petty they were from Inquisition off the turn just a below shot here as he came to the base right away meant cutting in the inside went which lonely in the Sobotka's car Betty what a little and down to the inside when Linda this is replay now and following in through page number 75 Neil Bonnett so Petty's day is not at its best at this particular Richard Petty [Music] meanwhile the struggle continues laughing James Hilton is puts Lindley and languid in comes Neil Bonnett bonnet just looks tough these days there's your leader number 98 Joe Ruttman you like Rutland as a driver rodman is a real good driver kid nobody really paid too much attention to it but all of a sudden you saw him I thought there good cause it was going to be tough but we got everybody's attention right quick number 98 8 in the event Cale Yarborough alongside us now watch this battle again between three and o'lone that's the battle for sixth place right in front is number 47 and 5th pron Bouchard there in turn one these cars change every lap is one of those subtleties which the average viewer just doesn't get a chance to to know about well that's true the car changes but the racetrack itself changes and you got to keep up with it all day if you're gonna be competitive fuel goes down the tire very deaf man that control that 3,700 pound car there goes what trying to get at a Bouchard again Bouchard and 5th Ricky rut number 3 and 6 Lindley down the inside Lindley charging to deter number 3 bottom side again trying to muscle his ban puts the shoulder to him and Lindley is there let's see if Neil Bonnett will come along at the bottom side back they going to turn number one some of these cars can have already moved the groove they're running Joe Ruttman is still running a low crew pretty much around the racetrack but I see Bobby Allison has moved up down through turns one and do it he's running the high groove now this is the battle in that bit spot is 47 Bouchard then insects wield a wheel puts lint Li inside the pole-sitter ricky rudd outside the kid who set a record official record at 198 miles an hour Daytona your co-host today Collier Cale Yarborough's said an unofficial record over 200 miles an hour then in lap number two you all know what happened side over side backwards watching 75 there goes number 75 up on the outside trying to pick that spot to get onto a lap car and bonnets they're just able to make old one lift a little or no stock trouble coming down pit road Earnhardt on pit road here's Ricky Rudd in the three car down underneath the 47 that's the battle for fifth remember better than 90 miles per hour while track here comes Neil Bonnett underneath Ron Bouchard ricky rudd picking up another squat talk about wait for a race to stabilize there just no such thing here they're swapping positions on every lap with a leader at the moment but well back in the back 98 Rutland has itself about a 15-car length advantage over the second-place car well a race never stabilizes on a short track in because you're always in traffic you never get a break on [Music] another car but always on the short track you insect I can remember when Richard Petty stabilizer three we won one time here by five laps let's go to Dave Despain here are the mud more Andrew needs bit for Dale Earnhardt adjustment running the tail in that time was a flattened right front smoked right side tires now under green the right front has gone flat again it's time the right front tire problems back to you can ricky rudd at number three is now pulled up the board spot there's your leader and car 15 is showing us a lap down he's trying to get the lap back Earnhardt unofficially now back in you may have lost two we know we lost one it is Ricky Rudd in fourth quantity is infinite and the sixth position is Bouchard seventh is Baker Akers Labonte in the current status unofficially back tonight is Richard Petty number eleven is getting ready to come back out again and is now on the track Waltrip just rolling back out and he is down 45 laps so it's strictly for the points to try to stay up on top to win his third Winston Cup and to equal your bar well it's no doubt about it is there's no way he could win this race but he's going to accumulate as many points as he [Music] days it's stone and it's been a week of large stones for this fellow Darrell Waltrip Neil Bonnett resting letting the other guys use up their race cars out but the other guy speed up the seat battle maybe where the parts down you got to take the holes when they Richard Petty's car is not handling is good the problem force all that can change you come in on a pit stop and football fresh tires on it might get to stagger just riding and he'll be the man to beat so Joe Ruttman continues to lead here at the Richmond 135 lat 265 Joe Rockland is but secure because the leader of the Alabama gang this man number 22 as that number 98 cent in his sights and he's tried to shoot him down [Music] by our legs he was trailing by 20 car lights just a bit ago let's go to the pits for an update from Dave Despain sleepy Waltrip Stevie Waterhouse Darrell feeling [Music] Darrell Waltrip Watts Lowe's Brandon garnett go back out on the racetrack that's new longer barrels wife back to you fence wire pretty revealing for you now the standings with 137 laps we play this half-mile track we have a laughs with a hundred 37 laps complete Ruttman first allison closing in second Harry Gant his third ricky rudd now born bonnet v moneymaker in sixth era the body seven foots Lindley is a Ron Bouchard nine mark mark 1009 11 Richard Petty is back to 12 we change one position petit is just knocked off he's picked himself up Richard Petty picking up cars to pick up 11 squat he's going after villa [Music] Joe Ruttman Richard Petty has picked up a couple of cars here all of a sudden he just scampered by the picked off the number 47 of bouchard's he was up in 210 there's your leader 98 which is picking up the pace a little bit [Music] he can see Joe Ruttman come [Music] pick it up we all wanna puts lindley right in front of richard petty old one lynly and Richard Petty is right on his deck [Music] there they are there you see butch Lindley and the old one that Richard Peddie money next to the 43 that squabble is where a faz petty has turned the wick up a little out here and is closing on his competitors trying to stay in that lead you know you can run long there not knowing what's going on you see the leader coming in your ear you know you gotta pick it up a goose off my back let's go back to the pits for this late update where is the pit for the number 22 machine of Bobby Allison fruit chip hearing no that is everything okay with the car yeah the cars running real good it's on a little bit of the loose side we're trying to get it even better like behind a building around in Connecticut you been talking to Bobby on the radio he's bruised up from his Daytona brag how's he doing out there physically no problem with Bobby physically he did great Jake that's Gary Nelson crew chief on Bobby Allison Russia he's come from six hiding spot to run second mother racetrack back to you Ken and for the moment for the moment this race has stabilized the Jill Rahman in front and Allison in that second position wait just a bit running a little off the pace 411 Darrell Waltrip who's 45 laps down and he is just that's got to hurt more than running hard just have to be out there and grind out the laughs well not true we got to keep going forty-four Labonte and seven shown as the [Music] a lot of changes taking place further back in the field but the secours to turn three goes Joe Ruttman Grand National race here today yeah he sure looks good hey Richard beta gonna pick his place after brother Fisher were closing down on go find yourself a left down Richards come a lot of times when laps back to win races several times that can happen but the way the competition is back in you don't want to catch yourself a lap down impossible it's about a straightaway there you see the 22 car straight away b5 I'm going to lap down see those leaders together as Allison has made up a lot of ground and he's right they're running with Joe Ruttman for the lead [Music] car number 75 by 2 number 3 they're fighting for fourth position everywhere you look somebody's in a struggle out here we track out here on the race Ricki right at number three and number 75 before Neil up in front we don't dare leave because it looks like Alison is ready to give it a go to go up on the point on it I think it's by road going into turn three 150 of the 400 laps are now complete Alice I'm getting a little better hand a lot of turn number 2 that time third place car still is the bandit Harry gana the Hali three but he's side-by-side with the 75 at 75 Barnet's going to make the shot it's 75 bonnet into for rabbit will fall the sixth position black marker moneymaker join Mark Martin as a left out the Snowman so Buddy Baker will have the six position and seventh will be Terry Labonte [Music] is about to lose that one a Jeff go die back to the leaders Rutland the 98 gets a little bit of breathing room all of a sudden he pulled away to about a 12-car length advantage yeah it looks like you know what to go looks like he just turned to wake up and get on the way Richard Petty's car the 43 right behind Woodling of the old one they are running in tenth or what Richard Petty is running 11th so we work toward the halfway point here in the Richmond 400 race number 2 of 30 takes these cars all the way to California twice boxer met Daytona votes this easement notice so next Sunday I'll try Rockingham North Carolina for the next battle of the night that's a tough one sure is that's a five - 500 miles or 24 hours whichever comes for absolute [Music] pitstop Idol Rutland as to what they plan to bring it in conceivably they could come in one time here and they stay green and go the distance today so Joe Ruttman in the woman has just a bit of a breather as he tries to close in and get a shot at laughing at the Richmond Fairgrounds in the Richmond 400 for the Winston Cup tour of NASCAR the grand Nashville cars are thundering this afternoon we have been five caution period there you see Gary Nelson the crew chief on the Bobby Allison car on the radio talking to his driver currently second overall there you see him closing up another time on car number 98 Joe Ruttman as they run through turns three and four on his half mile paved track sold out today as was Daytona a week ago the difference besides the track certainly not the action nor the competition like behind car number 90 Mitchell Brooks lies your leader Joe Ruttman Brooks a couple of laps down would be here in the booth is Cale Yarborough three times he's won at Richmond twice of this 400 we'll talk to him adjustable we get a quick report from Joe Whitlock of the pins [Music] Betty pays out there today what [Music] really good I can't hardly hear what you're saying but the car was running super we were moving right up I think we're up into sixth place and I had to the fourth of fifth place cars right in my sights and was running them down and we lost a ring and pinion you know I don't know what the problem was it was just you know mechanical failure [Music] the JD Stasi car in trouble with Mark Martin a brilliant driver the Midwest right down there in the trenches on a half mile track sounds like a combat zone here's maintaining that second spot as they put a lap on Bouchard Spa number 15 a pony outside trying to work his way through in his Earnhardt going around Bodine in the 88 it is beau died on the inside Bodine down low and car number 15 right there 15 an 88 fighting for seventh position and Earnhardt and what a lap down now picks himself up the spot Bodine falls to eighth nobody's willing to play it even today everybody's making a run and we still are a long way from halfway well was York in the car and Allison called Ritter on install now they're up on the back bumper now for rich finish looks like he's going to go a lap down that would be hard to make up the 11 cars of the lead lap something to miss the Richard Petty he's won 13 times this track he's about to go a lap down to Joe Ruttman the upstart from up one California and right behind him Bobby Allison Bobby Allison looking for his 74th career win grand national competition and Joe Ruttman looking for his very first there they are ready to laugh in so much history Richard Petty won his first race here in Richmond back in 1961 back when you were just a little kid tale no doubt about it can you know Richard paid his fatherly Richards run good now calm head has come along and he's running good understand Kyle's got a couple of kids so I guess they're gonna come along and run I guess it's gonna like [Music] here is number 98 Ruttman in front I thought you're lying a couple of weeks ago they're talking about Bobby Allison worried about his son and Richard Petty worried about his son you said that you didn't have that problem of your boys Harry Gant runs in third about 10 15 car lights back in this battle up in front and now it is heated up another time bar number 98 can he stay there bobby allison just about now would like to take it away 172 laps are complete [Music] twenty-eight to go Allyson's willing to wake this one out he's been here so many times there's here again there's your third place car number 33 you can see on the outside the young drive International I'll try to go he fights his way up through there the leaders and again Alison is there crowding for the lead on Joe Ruttman what a struggle they improvise i guard racing k boys and allison won the 1980 this year had a terrible of his horseshoe to the clash hard serious crash now there's the fourth position number 75 Neil bottom as great tea I think that slick Johnson today the bottom fifth position Bobby talked about Bobby he probably had too bad crisis they told him so he had double trouble down there in almost two days in a row first the flash destroyed a car then he and AJ Point were drafting car in front of them Hand Grenade in an engine and Allison had nothing to do but ride it down they gotta get broken some ribs there's a lap going on Terry Labonte number 44 Labonte falling a lap down so they're now up to the front eight cars of the lead lap let's go to Dave Despain once again at the Bobby Allison we just checked with crew chief Gary Nelson again about Bobby's situation Bobby had fallen a little bit off the leader Joe Ruttman space I asked Terry what was happening he smiled and he said my driver got a little overanxious Allison got himself back in good shape that is right on the rear deck of the leader Joe Ruttman buddy parrot of the Joe Ruttman crew says they will bring Joe in about lap to 20 they'll get past the halfway point about lap to 20 it'll be time for back to you can Carnival 98 Ruttman in front Alison and second the fifth place card the present time could be the fastest car the track ricky rod expiring blowing an engine car number three ricky rudd losing an engine and he will be the six retiree from the event and i don't think we have a caution coming down you see the scope coming out of the headers clouding up his day Ricky rod who's set on the pole the youngster from Chesapeake Virginia these Virginia fans would love to see a Virginia driver witness race but it doesn't seem to be in the cards right now California's first Alabama's second North Carolina his third Alabama is fourth North Carolina's fifth [Music] I think the toughest race on the racetrack right now is her again Tim Richmond they've been battling for about ten left passing each other Bank fourth ugly where Daytona 27 that car is reported as a lap down in fact he is being shown as two laps down Tim Richmond's car but he's sure making war with Harry guitar Perry at the present time has the position and he is third overall the 27 car he's being shown 15 one hundred eighty lamps are now complete in the Richmond 400 live on the superstation there's the crew on Rikki ruts car gathered about Dave Despain trying to get a word the most difficult of conditions is rough on a Super Speedway but threefold here on a half mile car number nine Bill Elliott in his board at Agassi Bill George is rolling down pit road as they roll back barn for three the pole sitter for the second straight race on the 1983 tour Richard Petty trying to make a move on number 44 petty is pulling in and trying to get under Terry Labonte here they're fighting for the eighth position of the present time up and turn number one later trying to put a lap on kron4 eighty-eight bowtie let's take a look at Richard Petty right here up on a hot side with him all the way is the old one puts lonely enlightened 44 car Terry Labonte is running at 4th Richard Petty is now tonight which Lindley is intense we'll be back with more on the RIP clop Bobby Allison making some serious moves to take the lead away from Joe Ruttman and there's the fifth place car that is Dale Earnhardt and what a tremendous job he is doing back with the leaders and other time as they fight for first a quick report from Dave Despain Ricky Rudd's entities that on the pole for the second straight week we've got the start of these things down now we got to figure out how to finish today was not today Ricky what happened well real early in the race all about the fifth or sixth lap is known to miss and I got out front was leading the race and uh we thought a part of sparkplug Larkin's it started running on Sep sellers and he just continued to get worse even though the call was working good enough we can still lead the race in one time but the motor just continue the good continue to get worse and finally just blue all together you had some left front sheet metal damage where'd that come from you know I don't know everybody's just racing pretty hard out there in the early goings and I think my car penny star got together a little bit that's the balls in a ricky rudd out of the event blown motor and battle for the lead Bobby Allison is there knocking on the door Joe Ruttman is out in front here they are the main straightaway into turn number one justified as he tries to stay in that front running position he does he is relentless here he comes somebody outside it's Bobby Allison hi Joe Ruttman lo the leader of the Alabama game making his move the first time of the race at lap 193 moving to the halfway point Allison flashes down in front of the turn number one Rutland cuts the cornered old fighter just tweaking it and it is Rutman back of the lead back comes Bobby Allison the outside Allison the back straightaway going up in front Bobby Allison in number 22 who becomes your leader here is 98 runt bun tried again but the high side is the quick side right now and Bobby Allison takes first place Cale Yarborough what about the tires on well I'm sure the turkey getting worn down for this well hi no-nobody loft for hit stop and they'll walled up his bonus card completely behind the guard round the track is taken to the truck Waldrop is officially retiring from the race as Bobby Allison takes halfway point five laps to the halfway bar on superstation WTBS race number two of the most competitive automobile race into the world and Bobby Allison 1982 Daytona 500 mile champion stays in front tried to be the national champion time and time again has always ended up as runner up the water deep great driver he is now look at that car begin to feel about how did you save rubber how do you save tires when you're going this fast when he just wants pressure on well it's rid of no way to save him can unless you can run way more on and back off and don't run the car quite as hard now Bobby now just pulling away and he's going to be able to just back off and he's through the Taurus which will not heed his cars up to bed the third place car remains Harry n he's the sleeper in this deck then in the fourth place in his Neil Bonnett in fifth is Earnhardt sixes Baker's seventh Bodine hate his petty night this Terry Labonte 10th this lovely 11th his Bouchard 12th this Lake speed at 13 his last year's Warner de barcos remember he wanted wait boy in the rain we've got a smoker carp loin coming up pulling out of pit road take us the Beatles car right behind Kyle Petty here comes Bobby Allison cruising down into the main straightaway we didn't overlap now two laps down at Kyle Petty now halfway next time by [Music] it will be all it Bobby Alice at the halfway there's any bonuses here today sometimes they have bonuses for all kinds of things the embrace in there you see Harold tenders displaying the half way indicator crosswise here's the quick report on pit road group Jill Whitlock standing here with Darryl no he's not feeling too well because the action he had last week [Music] [Music] the fields car number 92 being rolled back that one is retired in the attrition rate continues to develop here Waltrip now has retired from the race he would be the seventh and the eighth retiree is number 92 Fields losing his engine on his car so Alison is it front for the moment having to settle for second place again just waiting is now one half lap down to Bobby Allison big car appeal bonnet is running very very well and also the car number 15 to the fourth position Bobby Allison this would seem to be your kind of racetrack what do you have to say about it I've had a lot of good races here had a few mishaps here too specifically the last 2 February races 1981 I went through the wall and turned 4 and 1982 I went through the wall and turned one and that's enough wet kind of stuff it certainly is enough of that kind of stuff well he's sure working good now fathers car is handling real well he's running up into high group the race trike has changed Brooklyn's cars loose I wrote this car handling real good the first ball to race but now he's breaking loose and fish he's tailing off the corner and just let Bobby Allison is normally a superstation WTBS with motor week Illustrated 5:35 to 6:05 every saturday we hope you join him here's rut but making up some time with his new tires on remember he's coming from a lap down it's just made to lap up he's back to the lap for the leader but he's got some running to do he's on the tail into the left and remember as well that Allison still has to come in and you can be sure that Nelson and the Nygaard crew our wedding there and they're going to try to set all kinds of records to get them out I can recall when Buddy Baker won at Talladega went but more did a 12 second pit stop to turn it all around and give him a victory because on a Super Speedway one second on the track is about one second in the pits is about 300 feet of the track absolutely now Bobby Allison scores get begin and get a little loose up there like he'll be making this doctora now what it gets loose it begins to sashay and get her around out there you must have to work so much harder oh it's no doubt about it it's just like driving on us you know I remember here a few years ago my car broke loose coming off a turn for leading the race and I ended up down in the infield run head-on with a fire truck so if not better please a bit to run our car to lose here fire company sent you a bell they tried to give him a debate for it but we talked about it gave me your autograph instead nice going here's Bobby Allison still leading but he has to make a pit stop and they consume 215 in the 400 laps are now complete second place as things stand goes to Harry Gant and Dale Earnhardt has come Richard Petty is on pit road his car is on the right side in his really sustained some abuse car number 43 now on pit road it is beaten up tore it up and battle scars 41 Richard Peddie gets back out he's back in 10th position rich lore from Richland spelling off the place back here again live from the Richmond fairgrounds where you're watching Bobby Allison lead you're also seeing cry number 33 in your picture now that is Mary Gant abandoned who is running in second place overall in the event again maintaining second place Dale Earnhardt was right at his rear bumper then fell 15 car lengths back just moments ago something to miss on his car now Geoff Bodine is pitting car number 88 here is a late racing update from superstation WTBS at Miami into Miami Grand Prix red fly torrential rains in Miami this afternoon race is stopped al Hulbert from Pennsylvania leading with a Porsche when the race was put under a red flag we'll try to keep you updated from there this afternoon at the full story next saturday afternoon from the superstation on motor week illustrated with host Dave Despain Bobby Allison still first here at Richmond Barry Gant is in second there you see the third place car Dale Earnhardt Rookie of the Year 1979 paid back and was national champion in 1980 and then right through the back of the field for all of 1981 Cale Yarborough he had a tough year he came all strong and then you know he's won the championship and then it hasn't done anything says it looks like this year fourth place overall Delmont at fifth Rutland six Lindley sevens is currently Ron Bouchard as he reached 225 laps complete 226 on the 400 to be rotten Bob this half-mile track man wanna battle they're heavy here in Richmond today bobby allison has driven a brilliant race waited his people out made his moves here's Ron Bouchard who has already pitted trying to make up a lap now Bouchard grew up with the bottom line ranks probably best known up at Stanford Springs Connecticut where he cut his teeth and racing his dad at the trucking business up there has two sons both excellent racers Ron Bouchard getting his opportunity just a year ago number 44 Labonte weather two years ago who really move up in the grand national racing Terry Labonte is retiring number 44 just going behind the wall on pit road Terry Labonte who made such a great run for the national championship of 1982 that the leader is coming on to pit road leader is getting ready to come on pit road did not come in yet leader not coming in yet they were all set to see if commit a quick report the Dave Despain where the bud board Pitts with the narrower of the Dale Earnhardt machine on the racetrack and making moves down there surely in the men got themselves into trouble but Bentley on the radio to talk right now he's talking today alert he's very comfortable with the way a car is working you can look for a charge out of Earnhardt they've got good rubber up the car they're running very well out there Lakes Lake speed is pitting his car there you see the Earnhardt number 15 line third he's had to make up a lap and now they're battling for the foot position it is Bobby Allison Harry Gant is there the Bandit here is another driver on the modified ranks of NASCAR worked his way up finally got the break from maldita to get this ride and he's taking the lead Gary get is going to put the Bandit up and the car owner haldi Tim is here today watching this car operate Needham has just done a movie on stock car racing sorry body Anderson parameters from the 7m v vote and here's the leader Bobby decided it's really time for tires watch this pitstop now stop fuel tires being change seconds ticking off we have the clock on them [Music] bobby allison who has been your leader right side rubber jack man ready to drop it it's down he's away [Music] well seconds flat two tires take a fuel tell that to your local Philly they're really really doing some good stuff here today [Music] and this on one of these you've either got to get it right get some more practice let's go down to Dave Despain with earring else and dairy good stop everything okay [Music] we tried to fit this far as we can it's gonna be very close to people can make it all the way from here fires our fuel boats on tires are going on and okay now they made this table Gary Nelson has put the leader back on the racetrack again 234 laps complete 166 to go and Harry Gant is the seventh different leader in the Richmond 400 today it almost says over said it becomes a cliche about this business of competition kale but so many great teams megabucks sponsors good drivers can't buy a ride in here like you get at some forms of racing you've got to earn it you've got to prove you belong out here well there's no doubt about it you can't come in and buy a ride like you're doing some of the other five races you got to be a racer you don't get a ride that's the name of the game here and it's been good for the sport you know we were talking about Richie fatty winning races four or five laps down and coming back to win that doesn't happen anymore because those cars is called run strong all day and finish and one of the right now is number 33 Harry Gant abandoned the crew chief Travis Carter now Travis Carter is just as good a crew chief as you can get and Harry Gant has proven himself to be successful on Super Speedway in the Nashville 500 in Charlotte last year and at Martinsville and you're watching at pit right now and we'll watch this Travis Carter crew go to work see they come under 12 seconds there you see number 33 on pit road that's his timeout this guy works as a carpenter just to stay in shape Hills housing IVD building now here's Bobby Allison trying to roar back into it it's not this is a lengthy pit stop took him over 15 seconds that's bad that's exactly right so as we check the leaderboard now at the Richmond 400 in Richmond Virginia Dale Earnhardt will find himself in first place third heart in number 15 now up in the front running position it's amazing how many races these drivers get into before they get a chance at a grand national most of them event 5060 with some of the hundreds of wins Harry Gant said three opponent wins before he ever got that break well that's right you know a lot of lot of drivers think that you can just come jump right in to Grand National race or race card and go to winning and that's that's far from being true it's a different ball game altogether let me review for you how we stand we're showing 241 a 400 laps complete with Cale Yarborough I'm Ben Squire Jill Whitlock Dave Despain out of the pits here at the Richmond Fairgrounds sellout crowd beautiful day Dale Earnhardt has the but more Ford in first Neil Bonnett the Chevrolet is in second and it's Joe Ruttman in third driving a Buick when the fourth position right now Bobby Allison's car number 22 under the Chevrolet that of the fifth spot dropped me back after his pit stop Perry and Gant fifth spot Harry again pit stop complete on that car the sixth position will get for you in just a moment five cars are now showing in the lead lap six unofficially Jeff bowtie seven butch Lindley these three cars are left down 4:47 Carl brought Bouchard now we have gone since lap number 95 without a caution fail this could be really be a factor in this race now iron horde has got to stop another time and pilots got to stop another time that's going to put Joe Ruttman back in the lead and Joe right now has about almost a full straightaway on Bobby Allison there you see 33 and 50 getting back down at another time Earnhardt fighting his way right back in there with here again and now 50 drops in brings that car down this cut board crew can do just incredible jobs on pit road Air Marshal like a military unit when they pull in let's go to Dave Despain but more thrilled going to work on the number 1515 of a leader Dale about a 15-second stop on the league from here barring anything unforeseen so intense so electric the moments of this race there's just no letting up the pressure is there the excitement there lap after lap as you watch car number 33 Harry Gant right there with Dale Earnhardt again switching positions around another time I've been watching Rutland's car you know how good and how strong he was running the first part of the race woofman is definitely off the base his car is not running as good as it was and Bobby Allison I was making up ground on his pretty face you see Neil Bonnett has just made his pit stop back of the track and there's 33 Harry Gant who had been running in fifth all the leaders are coming in here the 244 laps complete I believe this is going to give Rutland he is just going to pick it up here as a leader with these pit stops all making what could be their last stop before they hit the checkered flag in the Richmond Joe Ruttman is now the leader in the superstation WTBS [Music] I'm Ken Squier up near topside watching Joe Ruttman of Oakland California try to put one away witness first Grand National race but he has his hands full right there number 15 has been closing about two car lengths so laughs in the last 10 laps and this ernhardt car seems to be handling much better than sure is can you know as I said earlier a sometimes the caller starts off strong here the racetrack changes and you just can't keep up keep your chest up adjusted enough to be able to go with the race track so our heart and Allison now definitely running off after the run they're gonna be taking him over short third place car is Bobby Allison there's a lap car in between them and out down to the inside at that lapped car number 17 that they're trying to move over sterling not so much they as he earned have some mental power to slide him out of the way and give Earnhardt a real crack at this man number 98 and we can see the interval here as they scoot into that turn back they go to 3 & 4 there's your leader number 98 there's that lapped car and then here comes now you see the three of them and the situation as it develops out of turn number two the lap car of Sterling Marlin 17 separating Earnhardt from the leader number 98 Joe Ruttman Marlon doesn't seem any too excited about getting out of the way sure doesn't and you know being a lap down he should let that our heart go back there go into turn number one [Music] Dale earnheardt how many laughs can you be down and still come back to win this race well you a couple of years ago pedis mortar for your five or six months back you know it you just got to stay in there to keep crashing edit if you have problems at the first few you still got a shot at if you don't give up if you can get your lats back called g0 tracked I have several cautions you know well he's made up one lap it's tough going he has come from a lap down and now he's fighting for the lead he has cleared that number seventeen and there you have them once again three cars battling for the lead as Bobby Allison is there batting on the door as well rambunctious grew up here at Richmond this afternoon racing out of turn number four Brooklyn on the inside rather into turn two in the number fifteen car Earnhardt in that poor just Hank's it and there goes up on the outside look at this battle 33 and o1 slugging it out further back they're fighting for the fourth position of present time back to the leaders again our number 98 on the outside going into the corner finding his way up comes from Earnhardt wheeled a wheel and Earnhardt is going from the spot it is Earnhardt into first dropping into second comes Bobby Allison back to third falls what [Music] government must be having some problems they came down the front stretch and he just pulled down to the inside and let him go he didn't try to fight them all what spot is here again he's about 15 20 car lights back for the leaders let's go quickly to Dave Despain we're with bloody merit crew team by the geohot machine buddy it looked like nobody let him go is there a problem with the car well right now I might tell Raymond [Music] definitely not the motor today we've got we're experiencing brake problems [Music] before yes and but really the car has been running good we got brake problems actually he just got enough rings slow the car down in case the Backson is something right now what's he going to try to do from here to the finish now he's gonna try to keep them in sight but it's kind of hard to do because they're closed away from him right now but hopefully we'll get a long caution the brakes back out so cooling the brakes is the issue for Joe fast but it won't slow down and you got to be able to do that here in Richmond the world of 264 laps complete 136 laps to go they are showing seven cars the lead lap and these two cars lead the way Earnhardt in the 15 and the 22 of Allison Allison approaching on the inside Bobby Allison taking a shot at first place her not offensive on it's gonna be hard to pass on the inside now the crews moved up high and the racetracks office leak down low so that's the only place Bobby has to try then he's giving it a good shot now sometimes they set a car up so it will work well down on the inside and it gets really slippery and greasy and all that well you'd like for it to work well down low all the time for this racetrack it's worn against slick there's nothing to do but but move a seventh-place car Buddy Baker about to be lapped by the leader Baker in the Wood Brothers number 21 for going a lap down as ernhardt overcomes if going into the first turn there you see part of the mass fairgrounds today packed to capacity to see race number two plus grand national tour for 1983 still in front Alison right there as he has been all day welcome third gam court Bodeen six Baker seventh Lindley at the present time six cars in the lead lap here comes Bobby Allison another time on the bottom side and the die guard car is working very well where they're not supposed to work well well it's working good ken but Earnhardt has that high lane and he's getting better got a better shot off the corner which carries him down the straightaway quick quicker even though Bobby can get him into corner he doesn't have the momentum down the straightaway that 15th are those how much brake do you usually have left on these cars with the new braking systems that you now have on board well you could you can be completely out of brakes halfway the race if you really use them hard usually when the race is over you my guess Rutland's uses pretty much already Richard Petty one time totally used to be his secret that he could drive sold-out parades he said now with the Duke braking systems in cars so many other drivers can stay up with you whereas the old days you fellas five laps or breaks were totally gone and you learned to drive it up that's right [Music] we'll be back with more of the rich wouldn't 400 live on superstation w trying to win it for the first time he's had two fourths of fifth in a seventh place but he's never pulled it off with a story of how he's done on this grace let's go to Joe Whitlock crew chief [Music] [Music] he is a Tuffy Tuffy indeed here's Bobby Allison trying to make a shot at money inside again the old rpm level on the outside but [Music] it's not too slick is the short way around let's see how it works here in turn to Allison closing on the inside groove both cars a little loose off - yeah you just don't have the momentum down the straightaway when you as you do when you're on that up in front Alison takes another shot at the inside remember how those Richard Petty cars used to work this is true you know Richard heft heads pretty well locks on them right these are what Alison Stewart now you should know about he's really using his tires up when he runs that low lane right now so he would be better off to just [Music] that will prefer there's my name strip on the inside as Harry Gant attacks no give it back to what he comes back to life and tries to hold on to it as he realizes that Gant wants to take a shot from the outside taking out [Music] and in one and two back comes Harry get another time Larry Ganem is on his way to third place it's been a thriller an exciting race back with the leaders 15 and 22 nose to tail James Hilton backs right away like to put it together this afternoon [Music] gorgeous afternoon here at I'll track a week ago [Music] 25th anniversary today it's another sellout crowd join this great competitive [Music] the Alison depended on some black cars and pulley with that 286 lat four teams ago [Music] in the last hundred laps on this our but you're on this size track in your arms must feel like you want to drive off the bottom of the steering wheel instead of well they sure do can about stop this comp of the race you really starting to feel the fatigue set in see five that's the 75 position right in front of him you see butch Lindley the sixth place is number 88 bowtie seventh is maker [Music] is the butch Lindley car [Music] is Tim Richmond [Music] next comes Richard Petty back to Dave Despain Bobby elephants crew chief Gary Nelson tells us there may be a gambling game being played here Gary what's up well we stretch there top as far as we could on our fuel and it came out very close to the finish it looks like we're gonna have to come right down to the wire and de- said you want to try and make it on the gas we have Florida stopped with just a few laps left at the range who makes that decision [Music] good days I do on that anyway we're really going to watch what I'm talking bout the Titian does it now to really help us decide Bobby's running very low on the racetrack earn arts running implies that significant I knew it the mantastic job I think he just found a groove that the most comfortable the track is slick hi mo we're reading of The Times to him and he's trying to find the best group good luck Gary Nelson says they may have to gamble on fuel for Bobby Allison who's running for the lead Bobby Allison is about to take the lead he goes down the inside twice he has stuck to those of number 22 in there could not get through once again Earnhardt Ben Zuma again Allison reels it in and turn number 3 that will pull the lead we have a car blowing up in turn number three spinning to slake speed it's going to bring out a caution flag no caution no caution flag it spins to the inside the track is clear you know blush is fun Hardin he didn't blow he just fun leaders all backed up did Alison get through that's the question here twenty-two dollars a right there in that number 22 in behind the fifteenth and here is Lake speed coming in there is no caution on the track no caution is Lake speed Pitts with a tire down will be back 100 this afternoon and oh my heart what a race up at what Earnhardt is holding on to the lead as they lapped last year's winner Dave Marcus take a look at what happened just a moment ago as Lake speed came down at a turn of a three driving the hassel ative car right behind the leaders had he been in front of them he was a lap down looked like he caught a tire down Cale Yarborough well it did something happened to him I think he just went into Harkin and lawsuit because he's continued running and hasn't made a pit stop so I really feel like he just got Oprah's head trying to follow those leaders in their head got in trouble 25 cars still on the track at this moment now he ever had a spin about taking somebody out he caught me there's your third place car here again I get lapping Kyle Petty third place car Gant he is running the lead left five cars shown in the lead lap I saw one at Martinsville like just a couple of years ago where they hold on to each other lap after lap married Alison looking anything but a tease out here as his car is running right there with Dale Earnhardt quit early to his car is that white and red numeral number 22 the but poor car the yellow and blue car up in front here's Alison taking another shot these two it really hello theythey worry more about having to stop again for fuel than passing right now because I don't believe her heart would have to stop I believe he's pretty well said to go with the Tollison has to stop just pretty now to continue say this thing might become an economy run Cael ahead could be Yale is going to make tough the national championship this year right now you're number one if you gave it up today you're not playing all the races you announced as I'm sure every every racing fan knows you wanted to be home or with your family but there's a lot of them out there plugging away trying to win that illusive crowd who looks good to you well it looks like Baldy Allison's gonna make her make another bid for then you know he's had so many near wins I think Bobby's gonna make a good hard strong run for this year for us you can never count Walter a lot of good ways I play bothers no bigger man here you think he could win it so many years he's almost like Lloyd Ruby at Indianapolis he comes so close but it was never quite to be well he's going to give it his best shot I'm sure he's had a lot of tough blow late in the season for the past couple years now there you see but more much more standing down as the crew chief and that car of his is being passed by Bobby Allison another time I get their wheel to wheel up on lap cars in front of them Richard works directly in front that comes Earnhardt on the outside whose father Ralph Earnhardt you ever run against his dad sure did one of the best short truck drivers his kid sure looks good today the lake dealer and hard to never won a national championship he'll tell you that on the outlawed dirt tracks after World War two he was unbeatable and the great style of his son and the lake wobby Isaac here they are out of turn number four Nelson does know where to look first they're all over him everywhere lapped cars everywhere there's but more getting a little itchy out there Purple Heart winner from Europe two tough old guy bills great racing cars about to get beaten up if he finds out I call them old here they come out of the car they punch them up Bouchard down to the inside in almost no place weren't hard to go the Earnhardt car is really working to run that far off the marbles are not break away it sure is that the cause got to be stinking good to get that for but Alison is right there unrelenting just stay there and again the inside as a whole but there's a lap car buddy Arrington in front of him and Alison who is 173 Grand National remember one more Richard Petty 195 of [Music] the great khali Yarbrough who is now 175 and I left out warning for David Pearson hunter [Music] back out of turn number four back to the inside another time [Music] a car is being shown on the tail end of the lead lap in the sixth position the six position is card 488 bowtie Ruttman and pith the fourth squad has bought it we'll be back in a moment 400 today at the battle is right on the nose it is Dale Earnhardt in what Bobby Allison at second they are separated by one Carling and that car lengths at the moment is bill by Jeff Bodine in the 88 back in third as Harry Gant his bowtie six of Bill Elliott seventh is Richard Petty in a real squabble at the present time with puts lately and eight and running in the ninth spot is Rhonda shard with Kent Lake speed in tenth now there's that old one right behind him falling back of it now is the Richard Petty car Hetty had been right behind the old one just a lap ago but as you see that's not to be they just put another left over to pay a few laps ago here this cars really not of the car today the pen is coming in pit road Richard Petty pulling into the pits his career race Richard Peddie all scarred up battle fatigue car number 43 comes to a halt quick pit stop block is on it's put out of the pits right now for this report we're the Mets with mud war you see [Music] we're going to happen to bring nail over nard in and put new left-side rubber on the car in the next bed Gary Nelson still hasn't made a decision whether he'll pit Bobby Allison for fuel back to you Ken Richard Petty electing to take on four tires he having some transmission problems they've had to push it on he tried who so again here this will drop him back to at least overall standings it leaves Lindley rowdy and seven that pulls up into the age Bouchard and up 2/10 buddy Baker's shown as two laps down just all breeding room between those leaders first second squat still is number using up a high groove all the way around the outside if it was yours to do who what'd you pick here well I don't know Bobby Alice's car is getting a little bit loose now as it comes off turn four he's only got a stop for fuel and Earnhardt's got to stop the towers Bob they'll have it be home free cuz I don't believe Bob plans to change tires on the last stop bacon there he is Allison down the inside the time this coming in lap 324 Allison inside Earnhardt outside it has been this kind of a race all day is this kind of a race almost every time they go to the line this is the most competitive out of no race in the world outside Earnhardt back in front another time Allison wobbling a bit gathers it up and streaks down into turn number three your arms must be ready to fall off at this point well this year or especially in a contest like this where it's laughs after lap after left you know you have no time for risk whatsoever so they giving it their all and you know kid it's not only a physical strain there aren't a tremendous mental strain out there race track slick they got to keep their mind on what they're doing 100% of the time oh yeah they learn are trying for his eighth career when there isn't quite Richard all the way around the corner trying to make up some time he is into his forties hundred ninety five career win Oh still tussle with anybody [Music] work starts in his career 110 in a row at one time [Music] taillights that outside 43 Rich's gone for fresh first try so he can run that inside lane so he's making up a long time for cars remained the lead lap Earnhardt and Alison that second and a half two seconds back [Music] goes to the front for a lap down at fifth is bowtie sixes Elliot into seventh is Bouchard and showing eighth Lake speed even after spinning nine Richard Petty there they are side by side another time as the war continues at Richmond between Dale Earnhardt and Bobby Allison back up to 400 and the leader is pity let's go down to the pit road and follow dale earnhardt bought this pit stop rolling to a stop in front of but four [Music] to come in for tires Bobby Allison had just passed him you're right they're on pit road as they go to the left side of that Park Hill it hit left side tires nice Bobby else just went by is gonna put him at that [Music] once is going to have to do it again and there aren't that many laps left is going to have a pretty tough row to hoe as a previous every track there is on grand national tour looks like he is as secure as one can be our has to be perfect or as close to perfection as you can make it with people slamming on your pumpers rippling up the sides of your automobile [Music] checking the clock to make sure they are right on time go SWAT stay the same Allisyn he drives very meticulous laps you can turn like you can thought is is real good not only on short track super speedways he's very consistent he won't ever laugh just about saying late reports from Florida that grace they're still red flag with torrential rains and with Al Hobart leading and we would remind you the totally Illustrated will bring you the highlights next Saturday afternoon 5:35 to 6:05 back to Dave Despain wherein they fed the pets with me Bobby Allison crew chief Gary Nelson he's been taken away for a radio conversation with the race leader now the issue of course is whether this but by 14 the too [Music] but more pitstop change your strategy now are you going to bring Bobby in a little bit of a surprise [Music] this agent still not made by crew chief Jerry Nelson weather he's going to be very short on fuel at the end of this race camp it may have been that Earnhardt chewed up a tire we saw him dance over the ripple strip on the inside of turn 2 and Bobby Allison passed him in the lead something like this [Applause] laughs he was in and it wasn't right-side rubber there is Earnhardt your interval between the front-running car and Harry Gant the second-place car kappa lack half a lap down is gay 33 holiday to Burt Brothers car to this the Buckhorn number 15 Bobby Allison [ __ ] true making up time right up there just so smoothly so beautiful we asked the man down 22 bobby allison is your leader and 15 is trying to bake back his left okay cycles like you throw an allison is most definitely the man that pit stop as nvivo position and having to make up a lap late in the going he's got to move around Alison unless Alison he likes to hit Ken evidently Earnhardt got a tire change behind everybody else I don't think he changed his left side tire see the last time here to change them right-side tires really what you need to come on if you want to run faster data for iteration but I just think his website Charles were gone and he had to change me the leader Bobby Allison 15 running back in fourth place and there is Harry Gant what a story net 41 Roddick Thomas borrowed $100,000 for the banker he crashes the car twenty years painted off brave little driver a great banker everybody banker get back in racing together a first-class team running 17 [Music] field continuing evolve here at Richmond we asked Bobby Allison what do you have to do to have success out here at the Richland Fairgrounds well what this track calls for is an awful lot of handling but you have to run good - we have a good combination with our setup gary has always been able to really respond to to my requests on handling and the way I like the Carter Drive they can adjust that thing up quickly for me well they've certainly got that car adjusted up right now and there is Earnhardt still trying to make back the left but Bobby Allison is command Harry Gant is at second Neil Bonnett is at third Dale Earnhardt on the tail end of the floor you are watching Bobby Allison Hueytown Alabama injured at Daytona just days ago driving a remarkable race in one of the die eight automobiles in that stable in two days he demolished two of them at $18,000 a copy but car number three the short track car really looking good now number 33 Harry Gant is your second place car that is the third actually they brought a third car today told on a long track car this would be like car number 4 and their stable their short track machine that is leading and here is the second place car but they call the short track car for the Travis Carter stable list number 22 [Music] 90 miles an hour every time just right just being so careful about those brakes watching those gauges watching the competition four and a half because one bullets miscalculation here with costume the lion share about 40,000 of the $200,000 purse today overall now there's number 75 bird he still has a crack at this the issue is will number 22 pick one more time Cale Yarborough I think he's going to have to pit kin but whether they change tires or not I just don't know I feel like they're pretty well set on tires if everything keeps going going like this going let me review a little further back in the field as you watch Neal bottom the sixth position at the present time is that number nine of Bill Elliott seventh is Joe Ruttman Rutland has fall to seventh eighth does Marcus night his Bouchard at running 10th overall is butch Lindley 11 is Richard Petty the 12th position is Kyle Petty whose couple yet from 30th the 13th position is Richard Brooks on the 14th position his buddy baker that's what score 8 is giving us at the present time there's the fourth place car that stubborn kid ernhardt let me review attrition for yo for : these cars have fallen out of the race David Deon Morgan Shepherd Tommy Gale Ricky Rudd Darrell Waltrip and slick Johnson by the wayside [Music] the latest for taco back on the track is Bouchard Bouchard has not retired so there's only six cars out of this way it is just remarkable that is remarkable Ken the racetrack is still full of race cars I know in the past year I've been down here and finish the race and with only 10 12 cars running the distance this is just a credit to the comp a foot we have race in man while this crowd estimated over 15,000 sellout really getting to see some exciting competition as Alice waged as good a battle as you could hope to see right now is Alison's race to win but it's all up to what they say on the radio as to calculating do they dare take the gamble or not let's go to Dave Despain Gary Nelson Gary you tell me you have made did you have any decision to fit the car is that correct at least for fuel we're about 15 seconds ahead of second place right now so we're gonna keep an eye on him I think we can go up to around 20 laps from in and just put in a little fuel way on the field a gamble by tires are we well you know it's hard enough to be like Littlefield me looks like it's going to be a fuel stop only for the leader Gary Nelson says he will bring Bobby Allison in here again with Jenna shot Ken it is down to a Saturday night short track shootout five laps to go it is a sprint to the finish you have to gamble and Bobby Allison left to take that gamble it could come in the next ten or 15 laps live the superstation WTBS you are watching the Richmond 400 this afternoon coming in and say good night suspensive quiet whether or not the leader has to make one more stop Nelson says there will be one or time on pit road remember 22 fifteen seconds back is Harrigan [Music] [Applause] place at the same lapis Neil Bonnett and the word is he could go home from where he is the bonnet looking very strong as we get down to the end of this one I don't think you should rule out Earnhardt he's he's moving up again he's closing in heart on her again that's gonna be a shootout there at the end third overall and he has made that pit stop he doesn't need to communicate well he won't have to stop again and you know if he keeps gaining getting away from Alison as much as he is right now he could catch Alison it just makes him forget stop there you saw butch Lindley just getting under he had new tires of that car now there's Gantt in the 33 [Music] grand national winner national 500 Charlotte North Carolina last fall he also won at Bart's go for this team finished well up in the National standings there's the leader Bobby Allison we're staying with him as we await the decision as to what to do on fuels and tires karna returned 22 it's the issue here still a lot of he'll slip here Ken and you know it gets right down to it ain't over till it's over there's one in capital letters my number 15 place call for cars in the lead lap [Music] he's got a real shot at it at turn three 22 laps to go for car 22 and they say that in two more laps we may see some activity as the best of Bobby Allison on pit road begins to bustle with activity second spot Gann third spot a hardcore SWAT van and pit al said six is that blue jelly at the old one that you just saw getting a lap back from Bobby Allison falling to eighth is Joe Ruttman ninth is Marcus Smith his wake speed 11th his penny richard 12 this petty crime with 13th Richard Brooks there's Buddy Baker getting a lap back and the tires have got 22 skidoo on car of Bobby Allison there's 44 taking a lap back meanwhile 33 at 15 begin to battle there you see the 33 in the second spot at the 15 of Earnhardt is right there looking at the laps run down coming up Sunday March 13th live the 42nd annual Daytona 200 motorcycle classic you'll see it live here on superstation WTBS as well as the exciting daytona motocross and the super bike production race series that's all on Sunday March 13th we'll take you to wheel racing on superstation WTBS live from Daytona Beach the 200 and recorded versions of the motocross and the production bike race are they ready on pit road for Bobby Allison indeed they are standing a parade rest his entire crew he elects not to commit this time he's trying to stay up there a little longer [Music] 382 laps complete there's the battle for second place Bernhardt is on the inside Canada's on the outside the yellow and blue car the Ford of Dale Earnhardt moves in on number 33 Harry Gant of the Buick now they going to turn number one Mark Martin wants to skirmish he has fresh rubber the youngster out of New Albany Indiana goes in between those two Mark Martin running outside the top ten but every position couch get willing to use mark Barton is a foil here against Dale Earnhardt by [Music] like those lap cars sometimes otra Gail yeah you can use them to your advantage so Alvin Martin's got fresh tires on he grew in that low group and he's he's doing a good job we should back off at the second third place cargo there's the reception committee for the Bobby Allison team and he is on pit road the leader is in leader is in you're following him down pit row ready they've got to take on fuel looking at tires let's go to date this Bank there was a problem on that pit stop they did not get the fuel filler quickly into the [Music] second thought that fuels diverse wash of gases with Bobby Allison gotta be smack the mystery of it all not getting perhaps enough fuel to bring him home a foil pitstop for car number 22 as Alison comes around those tires issue son working [Music] heart is gone by harry gamble he was bundle of lap cars running just in front of the second place man [Music] here's Earnhardt flashing his way up through trying to find Bobby Allison as the laps run down Allison's got a clear race track and our hearts call traffic it's going to be hard for him to get through and get to it but I believe he's running a little quicker than Bobby is right now if he could get out of that traffic he could make a real race out of it to gather up some speed here and get around someone thought of Appeals here's the leader now watch Earnhardt as he attacks them about seven left cars between himself and the leader Bobby Allison that's where the story is now he has to actually lift up lap cars all over and there's no place to go as he rim rides down off the corner of two get to the back straightaway fly the pride some rotting rope just any kind of a hole inside outside takes the mob money outside goes by McDuffie pulls up on Dave Marcus comes around on the outside meanwhile Alison is across the start/finish line what a break there's no leader Bobby Allison coughs got pretty pretty clear shot half he gets by this one more car and it's gonna be right down where the kitchen alone laughs to go [Applause] [Music] [Applause] mark just goes up as they straight down the back straightaway Willie to make it ernhardt freshly shot has enough fuel to go the distance the question is up the Alison [Applause] revenge game [Music] about 20 car lengths back again and third four cars in your lead what the ocean in front well it's a no-win situation for Allyson except to stand on it here kale that's what he's got to do and to go eight laps to go and all he's got to do is play it safe and don't make a mistake [Music] [Applause] just a bird heart himself traffic and with that unraveled he has a clean shot clear sailing but time is of the essence [Music] there you see the first at second place car [Music] 4:22 and they're both in the back straightaway and a bird heart is making a tremendous charge considerably faster than leader but they are separated by about 25 to 3 number 15 hard swinging to the outside around James Hillman time Alison way hi turn number two ernhardt wine together it in close ground there's Alison trace seemingly less mechanical gremlins or fuel or tires our lights and still three laps to go this time [Music] [Applause] Bobby Adelson seemed to get a little breath that time [Music] back at turn three it's all heard art crowding in [Music] there's your leader inside his Earnhardt just gonna run all the time he and he is really there is our picture white flag is out there is one to go at Dale Earnhardt closes up car Lakes the finish here in Richmond back straightaway there's Bobby Allison and 20 years her life one last stab digs deep they come on a turn for an artist coming to the inside he's for carnage back Alison takes the checkered flag the third place cause on pit road [Applause] Harrigan staggers onto pit road at the end of the event number 75 punch across Baelor nard up congratulating Bobby Allison on at 74th career win Oh Oh bye mark what a finish that was a good finish our heart just went out of time he was really coming strong one more lap oh but for one more lap is what but four and Dale Earnhardt our same as Bobby Allison says which way to Victory Lane here at the Ritz victories come from great battles and Bobby you were in one all day weren't you I'll tell you those guys run so good Earnhardt you know you had some bad breaks but boy he just runs so good and ruttman and just all of them what a race here today were you in on the decision whether to come in for fuel or were you at the mercy of your crew there well I leave that up to Gary I try to steer the thing and work the gas in the brake pedal and he tells me when it's time for gas and tires it's a good decision wasn't it it really was it worked out perfect looked like they might have had a miscue they had a little problem getting the fuel in were you aware of that did you did you doubt for a moment that you had the fuel to go the distance well what happened is my foot slipped off the brake and the car rolled on on me but I knew that they could respond Odegard crew you can't beat him race long out there it was just a spectacular battle there really wasn't much strategy to this one it was a typical Saturday night short track brawl for you wasn't it it sure was Gary just got on there and said well go fast as you can go ahead and stand on it it looks like we gotta race them it started out as the story of Richard Petty's 900th start but it becomes another Bobby Allison victory and I know it's got to be a real satisfying one for you after a tough Daytona well really we did everything wrong at Daytona I crashed in the Busch clash I crashed in the practice the next morning with our other car Gary and the guys had to work all night every night and we had to run our short track car down there but they built this brand-new Monte Carlo SS for here and really they just haven't quit working they went home and you know I was feeling a little sorry for myself and everything and it kept me cheered up all the way so man I can't say enough for Gary and Robert Yates and of course want to say hello the folks back home my mom and dad and my kids Judy's here with me but the rest of them are there at home and of course Bonnie's in Charlotte so I need to say hello to the whole family but it's just been great for us and bill Gardner wasn't here today so I know he's watching there and Connecticut on TBS bill the guys did it for you Bobby congratulations to you Bobby Allison brings home the gold in the Richmond 400 Ken a splendid victory for the Gardiner brothers of Connecticut who maintained the die guard racing team and for Bobby Allison his 74th career win that there was one phrase that summed up the entire race it was stand on it we will talk with a man who nearly wanted Dale Earnhardt the but more crew in just a moment as we bring you more live coverage from Richmond Virginia on the superstation Earnhardt there you see the Earnhardt crew gathered around back with the others that get marked as losers that's one of the toughest parts of this sport can be one winner and there has to be 31 losers here today Joe Whitlock is standing by to talk with him after we take a look at that last lap you talk about the camaraderie and the esprit de corps of this this was when the race ended when the race was over the first man to congratulate Bobby Allison give him the okay sign Dale Earnhardt who had just been whipped by him so Bobby Allison wanted Dale Earnhardt finishes in second place and let's now go down to Joe Whitlock who is standing by with Dale Earnhardt that was quite a run today I'm telling you they call you the tough customer you seem to be fighting your way back all day long do you know how many pit stops you made no I don't have any flat tires we had two flat tires and that's two guys with pit stops really and you know we got two laps down wanted you know at different times and we had to fight and make them back and you know it was just a tough race we just run out of time where I feel like I could've beat Bobby if you know I just could have called him that little bit of traffic got in the way there about 10 to 15 laps to go and it slowed us down
