Esmond Dean these days its features have been enhanced by a sunken bath which lies through an archway leading from the master bedroom the main lounge is bigger than a tennis court but for all the opulence this is a home the pictures which seemed to leap out of the frames on the sideboard now the golden and platinum discs which line the walls give a clue to the identity of the man who lives here Brian Johnson is a symbol of the rock age his life began 35 years ago in a council house only a few miles from here at Dunston on the other side of the time now he's the lead singer of the international band ac/dc [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well that's Brian Johnson these days helping out rock music - the world-famous ac/dc but it was a different story in the 70s and along their head Johnson was lead singer in a group called Jordie seen clearing out time T series called appropriate Jordy Seaver started in late and 72 of them and if ik Malcolm toggle drying lips for localized we just went down London with a bunch of tips in mind just want you know the old story next thing you knew we were saying them you know reg1 went on top of the pops [Music] was it ever tough forever out of work or on the dough me die and you get note-for-note and a dead rate for about seven years after you know I left jewelry from six years you know I was literally living so I had the most you know in the latter part of it about seventh year who started a band called Jordie again with with three new large you know that was a great time you know at least two had a little bit money and more pockets to sort of buy a Chincoteague but can I say that yeah we'll get a prawn curry awesome a geat between between were you know what it wasn't too bad I've had quite a lot of stories about how you started with a CTC but perhaps you can put the record straight for us Dell easy dead easy story I was playing with Jordie I've got a telephone call the wouldn't say who it was you know that he said I'm sorry what kind of tell you it is because of the fact that there's been a bereavement in the band and we don't really think it's tangle at anybody newer or who the band is what I've never been for an audition in me life you know I kind of go to London you know I can't afford it you really couldn't afford to go down to London no no Brooke I was very good a good friend who who let his his car and as soon as I walked in it was like a real friendly atmosphere just said our hellos and had a can of Bromley oh wait and for this you know the knows from you Catalan kind of brownie oh yeah come on we know you may be nervous and what was that tired was a knockin I wasn't I wasn't nervous I was just seeing a let's do it I'm gonna get gonna get back up with a gig them well I would you again how was really getting face without gig the enof you know he's Alan heating bushwell have always been good peers i think i think we're getting about 120 quid i think a dream three now many between four away which was like a big peony that now when was this when you actually landed the job with ac/dc that was nineteen Yeti SATs thank you three years ago be three years ago yeah so I was sure I must admit it was a it ever you know I look back on me later that was the year that it really all started but how is it that a lot of people and I'm talking about nosy people like myself will say well how has he done it in such a short time because he you seem to have a lot of money now uh you've L asked me accountant that I don't I think it's just we just we did an album it's all heaps and heaps leaps you know right around the world and countries that I've never heard of you know and I think the band itself an honest hard work and bound nothing the try the hardest to give the best value for money many difference for me is I live in a big house I don't pay the council around anymore II live in a castle as you always I was brought up like home so so yes you molester lives there so lose it the fans and people generally speculate about folk like you though say you're a millionaire now would our true hey no no never the tax man what's your no definitely not but you know unfortunately I'm gonna I'm gonna leave the country for money reasons and I never ever thought I would you know I was determined to stay here but it's you know just cannot kind of afford or you know any longer resisting that dogs even worried about it we don't know Hawaii because cliff the BSP already lives here you see I mean Kara went out there in the summer last year and it's it's not the most sensible place I think yeah as far as your life is as stars in our concern what does it meant in America how recognized are you there well it's worse in America than it is here actually it's you know it's I've never been to America in my life until I joined ear CDC and the first king we did there we know straighten the Madison Square Garden and you know just before I went on stairs I promptly got thrown out by the security wonder what a bum like me he was doing hanging around Madison Square Garden it was sold out it was packed and I couldn't get back in see what are the Sherpas who took their spot it is and they put it in the back of the limo honey he drove us back in again as I said in the state's they're all the religious moral groups all the think we're real bad lads you know and because of the naughtiest songs well I think they drink too much you know what making the kids we're what I mean are you see that American kid hey that our truck has one you know that I'll remember yeah because the lanes are revolving it's too fast the lights to faster can I keep all by themselves you know I'll tell you something Brian I didn't recognize you today with like a cap on there all be doctor I've got it see I will be done there that's better I started wearing less and Jory actually girls giggle it was west of Excelsior club I put it on that night I felt a bit Duff but I stuck with it I kept it on and yeah with the lads and advances all you want to keep it on you know a bit of a trademark I feel comfortable when I grew up in it you know it's just once upon a time everybody used to wear them know the turn brother are you thirsty the earthers did some or other girl next door but I think next a comin true [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] better better explain the viewers of this is your house and not a Papa but we're going outside I know this is this is me wreck you recreation room you get wrecked when you come when you walk out of it why do you have a bar like this in the house I mean you've got a dartboard I see you've got a pool table it really isn't it well it's just sort of a room from warm you know if you kiss sometimes I you know when you when you do grow you know the driving stuff with a breathalyzer knowledge so is its hand yeah just to crawl over here up the stairs and their bed you see eventually that moment to go home from home well although we are moving abroad yeah I've bought a house here you seem to have your routes pretty strongly in the Northeast what is it about the area that still appeals to you the simple answer is it because as soon as I did move away I miss tool we must be me it's you know the band itself are great rods and all that you know but I mean it's you know you still feel like you want to be who you know like yeah it's already been in Hawaii but what do you do it how about seven when everybody else is getting dressed again to the club yeah you're still swimmin you know and it's a bit boring you know and there you want to be back home cuz it is a wasn't a little Tonio castle you know it buzzes you know as I was an excitement there looks like that's happening it are very aware about your your old mates were looking back to the days before Jordi before your singing you mentioned in apprenticeship what sort of work did you do um I've been at Turner drops again window cleaner I used to put in wind screens you know the emergency windscreen service on the m1 value roof inner just in you anything like you know I was I was looking a moment ago at yeah yeah yes whether they were Newcastle United and blazoned across it have you ever got an ambition to be a professional footballer ah yeah right I just wasn't good enough you know I played for the United States of America against Italy get away hello no I was I was the only Englishman in the team actually and replayed Italy at the Fiorentina Stadium there was with 25,000 a you know it was floodlit ladies had turned a jelly and it was against the Italian sherbert eleven and one beaten and they thought we were gonna be a walkover but they didn't think that you know where I'd Chuck Norris you know the way Bruce Lee he was were sent off well you know you didn't got me other man whose DeAngelis and where would one know and I was a fantastic yeah they because dealers off key em down near the Italian girl Kimura and he presented me with a man of the match award and I was front testing late fantastic later how did you get the play for America how does that come about they're not gonna telephone caller that I was sitting scratching me Edwin send them all and we didn't appear by like I got a telephone call right out of the blue from Los Angeles area and they just said listen to your fans he decides he again we bring a bow but we'll beat them and it was great and I was like the highlight of my life you see Tom musics me love and footballs me passion you know what I mean it's two different things you know yeah well you may not have made it as a professional footballer you're hoping to make it into the professional soccer world as a director of Newcastle United ooh yes stake yeah yeah yeah yeah you put it this way you want to be a director Newcastle United you're gonna bother to in the bank what's happened are you going to be I hope so I hope so I really do how much money are you prepared to put in at the club I said a hundred thousand and I mean a hundred thousand I'm gonna go back we we I do want anything out of it I want nothing you know some things I think it may be a little unfair for me the clusters anything to do with your CASL yeah and if I'm not there and whoever I say that I could make a big difference to the team I like to think I could but you know maybe I'm to an experience that you know it's a frightening thought you know but I'd love to be able to do something I know one thing I really would like to help Newcastle United with and this is another thing that I found refreshing with the directors the one who makes and James's Park a good rock venue which I thought was great once upon a time they wouldn't even they would never have thought of that because remember Geordi tried to clear there and then knocked it on the head but now actually the one because the Rolling Stones kill me that was tremendous it was direct a training in luring storms here [Music] our youngsters in the city and throughout the north their dream would be to be where you are today now you're opening your own studio to cut discs in the city yes is this an ambition of yours to help young people our music well well I'm really yes it is I'm dead excited because it's realization of a dream for me I'm gonna try and help people up here you know so you know with our publishing companies and stuff like that yeah look I'll tell you what we're gonna do one of those magic things on television you and me are gonna pick up the whiskey the camera is gonna zoom in on us enjoying ourselves how can ease drunk and any he'll pick us up at the studios we'll see what are you gonna offer this so yeah she'll feel like here we are Brian just like that yeah yeah this is the mixing desk in the new student I expect you know all these buttons work well I don't feel with them out just come in so it says still pretty new old everyone in this dude you go sir you know what we get the hang of it by tomorrow me well I have been recording studio for some time in the Northeast but what's so special about this one they put it blue get to the best it's the best you can get best that money can buy and we've already got three or four American bands big American bands very invested in recording here for tax reasons obviously for to record in England there's some European bands want to come over here and but yeah the same thing we weren't afraid enough local talent you know we're gonna frank them off by you huge prices you've obviously got to keep yourself within sort of freedom workman yeah people love you I can afford we've talked to us about your international career you're moving away next week but here you you've put your money into a recording studio on your native Tyneside yeah well it's just you know good things have been going the last couple of years you know everybody's being talking about recession and stuff like this and I must be a lot of big money investors who really aren't putting as much money as they should they may be weird in hedging their bets a little too there is British whoever I want to invest my money here because the future of the talent in the Northeast I mean it's the biggest hotbed for music in the world as far as I'm concerned and I just want them to have the best in standing with me where everything is live from the city hall and as well as plan for burger everything you make everything is live from the city hall
