presented with a large bouquet of flowers so al everything is set we're just about ready to go it's time to play for the marbles now george spring training a lot of fun everybody enjoys spring training and now when it really counts and you can eliminate all statistics all batting averages pitching performance it counts now and the fellas that are able to turn it on when they have to uh are the ones you hope like a jack morris who did not do well in spring training but he says he feels fine and you know jack morris is going to win yeah now's the time to do it jack had a terrible spring as we told you he won one lost three earned run average of a little over seven and he knows that just will not get it now jack last year won 14 lost seven during the regular season against this ball club he was on o his lifetime record two and three against the kansas city club and he'll face the left-hander larry guerra now we talked about garen the pregame show lara won uh 11 last year and lost seven he's had a great uh career against the tigers he's won eight lost five but he's pitched much better than that he's just been a tough tough pitcher against the tigers so we should have a fine ball game tonight jack morris a right-hander larry guerra a left-hander and we're going to be right back after this message well you see the umpires at uh home plate it'll be dave phillips behind the plate tonight nick bremegan will be the empire at first big greg kosk down at second base and steve palermo will be on at third base a rather late arriving crowd as you might expect on a cool evening and it's not that bad at all temperatures should be in the low 40s here in kansas city just a very pleasant day it's been a bright sunshiny day all day long here in kansas city they had sold 25 000 seats they were expecting 30 000 and now they're going to have close to 30 000 people here tonight well it's a pretty good crowd george but i still wonder why they would play a night game opening day you would you would expect it with all the season tickets that they sell they could have played a day game and it was a great day and as you mentioned a bright sunny day the astral turf will create a little bit more heat and even tomorrow the players were saying why don't they play a day game on saturday instead of a night game early in the year uh you would think that they could draw 30 000 during the daytime well they're going to play here tonight though that's the schedule and they'll play again tomorrow night the temperature will be better the weatherman says tomorrow night it's going to get up to 55 tomorrow afternoon and then on sunday for the finale as we told you a little bit earlier the weatherman has promised a very delightful sunday afternoon easter sunday of 68 degrees you just can't beat that this time of the year so a rousing applause saluting the kansas city royals as they were taking the field and larry garrow here taking his warm-up tosses georgia we have three new players that will be facing uh larry for probably the first time uh cabell might have faced uh uh larry when he was in the national league but ed miller cabell and larry herndon this fellow is a very crafty left-hander as we've mentioned before his record he always pitches well against detroit he has more success against the free swinging type hitters the ones that go for the home runs uh the three fellows that are in the lineup for the first time against him are not those kind of hitters they're more basic type hitters and maybe they will give larry girl some trouble certainly we need uh if he pitches like past performances we need someone who can who can get on bait another thing we should look for uh the tigers are are going to look to be running but larry gir has one of the better moves uh to first base so that might delay the start of the the go go type tigers well it's going to be ed miller to lead off enos cabell will bat second and play at first base tonight against the left-hander and gibson in center field larry herndon of course is in left field john walken fuss the designated hitter tommy brookins is at third base lance parrish will do the catching alan trammell is a short stop lou whittaker the second base leading off for detroit and jack morris will do the pitching for the tigers right field chet lemon is going to be out for a while he has the pulled rib cage muscle and that can be uh very sore it's just a matter of time so we're ready to go in the first pitch of the 82 season the attempts about it when you play on astroturf with the speed of ed miller of course the tigers have been trying to get him to hit the ball in the ground to begin with but you should try to hit the ball on the ground or line drives here's a line drive base hit this one is in the right center field so ed miller starts the ball game with a solid base hit george i mentioned they're the type of hitters that will give larry gura much more trouble than someone uh a free swinger lance parrish to name just one someone who goes for the fences someone who tries to move the ball around uh will have much better success against a larry vera type pitcher there's enos kabel who's playing at first base tonight i'm going to see a lot of cabell this year he'll be at first base third base designated hitter might even be in the outfield and we'll do a lot of pinch heading they've been hitting and running with the cobell particularly in spring training on the first pitch i doubt whether they'll have miller going until they see what kind of a move he has to first base [Music] pitch just a little bit high too cabell i should mention the catcher is not known for his throwing ability he's a fine defensive catcher does not have a strong arm but the pitcher gary gur has a good move he's a smart veteran pitcher that will not give the base runner a running start he's made two throws to first base both have been more or less token throwers over there he's got a better move than that which is inside and it's fall too and no strikes [Applause] we're in the first inning in kansas city on a very delightful evening much better than we had hoped for they had some snow here yesterday morning ball two no strikes [Applause] gonna hit and run al that's a pretty good time to go right now if you just don't get picked off [Applause] bouncing ball to third that might be a double play hoopsie throws it away and down the second will go cabell well there was two brett almost bobbled that ball it was a high hopper it looked like he leaped forward and then 23 made a bad throw look at it again see exactly what happened here you see the great speed of uh a miller here it is a high bounder and the throw is not a good one it's down low and you can see there uh miller going in real hard at second base i remember a year ago where they called the base runner out on gibson when he went in hard to second base pretty much a judgment call on the part of the umpires it's going to be an error charged against the second baseman nevada is gibson pitch is inside so miller is out third to second and then cabell moving to second on the throwing arrow [Applause] frank white saying to himself my goodness i just got the golden glove presented to me just before the ball game and on the first play i get i'm charged with an error george you could also be remembering something about george brett too yeah george you're going to get me killed down here if you don't give me a better throw than that on deck hitter is larry herndon ball two and no strikes the runner at second is cabell [Applause] the pitch to gibson bouncer to the mound knocked it down oh he called him safe and then out extremely close he went down and then came up i think he made the right call on it number three who watched the umpire again here nick remington i believe larry forgot for a minute who the hitter was you see you went after the the ball rather slow and very close play i don't believe you could even tell on the replay so gibson is out out number two the runners at third we'll look at it again here tell you the first baseman doesn't give a very good stretch ooh that was close very close cabell at third two outs and the batteries heard it a breaking ball for a strike i think al you pinpointed exactly what happened guerra thought he had plenty of time and then all of a sudden he said hey wait a minute gibson's running hurry just played just in time to get him one ball one strike it should be the type of pitcher that uh larry hernan has uh quite a bit of success with say john walker plus uh someone who doesn't have an overpowering fastball ball two and strike one [Applause] vera is not wild he's wild by design he'll throw a strike when he has to ball three strike wide gura has never opened at home he's never been opening day pitcher at home he has been an opening day pitcher one of the time but that was in baltimore and he's never been an opening pitcher in his own ballpark [Applause] kansas city has played one ball game this year they opened in baltimore and they were beaten 13-5 here's the 3-1 pitch good stop by wathen herndon gets a walk so the tigers have them at first and third with two outs and the batter will be john walkenfast john had a good spring uh showing the signs a couple years ago swinging the bat much better than he did a year ago had a couple home runs we're in the first inning in kansas city the tigers have them at first and third with two outs [Applause] is a little wilder than he normally is i thought he was going to overthrow that one a bit third base runner is cabell first base is herndon one ball no strikes i'll make it to it though [Applause] john normally uh will not swing the bat until late innings at a breaking ball usually looks for the fastball early innings until he gets two strikes uh guerra not known the challenger hitters too much with the fastball will try to waste the pitch inside but of course uh with two balls no strikes you can't take a chance here this will be out of play off to the right ball two and strike one [Applause] the inning started with a base hit by ed miller a single to right he was forced at second by enos cabell then on the relay to first which was while cabell went to second cabell moved to third base as gibson bounced out then herndon [Applause] fuss walked it away and it's ball two and strike two good shot from center field as shiro gets ready there goes the runner and a drive to right that's going to be caught hit the ball well but right straight to the right field no runs in the inning on one hit tigers strand a couple we go to the bottom of the first in a scoreless game okay here's how the kansas city team will bat against jack morris leading off playing left field tom poquette patting second and catching john watham adding third playing third base george brett batting fourth in the cleanup spot willie aikens play in first base batting fifth amos otis playing center field the designated hitter hal mcrae batting sixth new player in the lineup playing right field jerry martin playing second base frank white and playing shortstop ul washington of course they will be facing uh jack mars and i think it's been talked about many times uh that he did not have a good spring but that sometimes uh does not really mean a thing it means something now the start of the season his arm feels fine uh roger craig the pitching coach a very fine pitching coach uh thought he uh saw a flaw in the delivery of jack morris [Applause] followed by watson and then towards brett as kansas city comes to bat for the first time in this game the first pitch from morris pop fly behind second base and it is [Applause] will be scored as a base hit for our [Music] poket bring up the catcher john watson good hit and run man you're very seldom see a catcher batting in the second spot but he handles the bat well he likes to go to right field one of the best second place hitters of all time was a catcher in detroit nikki cocky cochran that in the second spot pitches in tight watson inherited the catching duties here when uh daryl porter left to sign a free agency contract you remember a year ago a little over a year ago with the cardinals boy what a start he's getting off to an 82 darryl porter with the cardinals after a very disappointing season last year one ball one strike on deck circle george brett what can you say about this guy that has not already been said the runner at first is tom pocket he's playing in place of willie wilson who's got an injured rib cage too there's a pitch out nothing develops [Applause] a chance to talk to a good friend rocky calavero is now back in baseball as a coach with the kansas city team looks great again throwing a lot of batting practice wants to say hello to his good friend eddie robinson back home [Applause] the 2-1 pitch and the runner is on his way he pops it foul as we out of play royals had the hit and run play on [Music] and the count is even at two and two kansas city pretty much the same ball club that they've had the last few years a couple of changes a few new pitchers vita blue for one right field a new right fielder jerry martin playing for the royals this year this is foul out of play you can see wathen trying to go to right field with it as al pointed out he handles the bat [Applause] well [Applause] still a ball two and a strike two count bottom of the first no score in the game a ground ball up the middle watson with a base hit so the royals have them at first and second and there was another one hit on the end of the bat of the hill just barely got past camel in the center field yeah both balls were not hit well that one was on the handle just barely got out of reach of alan trammell jack morris throwing the ball extremely well here early but uh so far has not had any luck and it's not going to get any either easier with this fella had a great spring bet well over 400. oh he's got the heart of the batting order now brett aiken's a notice and then mcrae runners at first and second nobody out one strike to brett [Applause] [Music] george said he had a disappointing last year he hit only 314 after hitting 390 the year before well that's 3-9 is a tough beer to try to duplicate there hasn't been too many people in the history of baseball that bat at 390. outside one and one george had a difficult year off the field off the year i know he had gotten into a lot of trouble with different people the press the media and so on and so forth a very difficult time for him and uh and there's the big guy willie mays aiken george had a very difficult year i'm sure he was glad when it was over one ball one strike morris trying to get out of a jam here in the first inning two on nobody out fly ball into left center field gibson is there oh nobody tagging up that's a little bit surprised now he's headed for third base here's the throw and he makes it well that was surprising coquette did not tag up till after gibson caught the ball then he took two steps back tagged up and still had plenty of time gibson really mad at himself and rightfully so he coasted under that ball and although the flag is not moving it's obviously obviously the wind is blowing out because he backtracks and then when the base runner saw that gibson was backtracking there he knew it was impossible for him to get anything on his throw you see there he's backtracking and now to get any momentum on his throw is almost impossible and the second thing he did wrong was going to third base he had no chance to get third base he should have gone to the second base to try to get a double play both runners moved up they have them in second and third one out and the battery is aikens [Applause] we're going to walk him to pitch to otis [Applause] as you might expect notice a right-handed batter set up a possible double play well the intentional pass has been a part of baseball for 82 years i guess that's how many years the tigers have opened in the american league and yet they always boo the hometown moves and you give the intentional pass to one of their players they're going to pitch to a guy that's had a pretty good career against detroit offensively has always been a tough out for detroit although a year ago and only 16 at bats he bet at 188 but he has a lifetime of 294 with 24 home runs the most home runs against any other club bases loaded with one out in the first inning this inning started with a single by tom bouquette john wathen followed with a single to center brit flied deep the left center the runners moved up then the walk to aiken the pitch to otis one ball no strikes this fellow is a good breaking ball hitter out he seems to guess real well against the tigers no matter what they throw him he doesn't try to pull the ball through the fastball by him one and one [Applause] amos has been around a long time with this ball club they got him from the mets in a real steal a third baseman here's a drive hit deep way back in left field and it's gone a grand slam home run by amos otis well there wasn't much doubt about that one otis gave it a ride into the left field seats and the royals take a four nothing lead [Applause] looks like he might have hit a breaking bridge [Applause] [Applause] no question line drive this crowd wants amos otis to come out and take a salute and he does so a grand slam home run in the first inning and the royals have jumped out in front the batter will be hal mcrae pitches in tight mcrae's been an outstanding hitter [Applause] both in the national league and long time here in kansas city [Applause] lion drive speared by brookins at third base mr ray hit the ball hard extremely hard caught by brookins [Applause] it's out number two and it'll bring up jerry martin as we look at that again well he got all of it and tommy goes as high as he can to make the play here's a new fella from the national league fire from the san francisco giants jerry mart [Applause] had a couple pretty good years with the cubs [Applause] one strike to martin the pitch from morris is in tight one ball and one [Applause] [Applause] i've had the idea they're all digging in a little bit too much on him there's the 1-1 pitch one ball two strikes well you bail out a little after the other one well you have to let them know you're out there you know you're not going to just stand out there and let them beat your brains out so not trying to hurt anybody but you want to get them off the plate a little bit [Applause] struck gave out they get four runs in the inning on three hits at a walk and at the end of one kansas city four and the tigers next [Applause] [Music] you're watching tigers 82. tom brookins will lead it off the pitch from guerra is up high [Applause] royals have four runs on three hits one air the tigers no runs one hit and no errors all two and no strikes the baltimore club used the home run on opening day to whip kansas city 13-5 and they have retaliated against the tigers here in the first half of the grand slam home run ball two strike one the pitch to brookins fly ball down the right field line foul this should get into the crowd makes it fall too and strike you well you can see it's a bundled up crowd but they've really filled in as sheldon just pointed out to us it's a was a late arriving crowd but we have 30 000 more than 30 probably struck him out tommy brooking strikes out that's the first strikeout for here setting seven number 13 lance parish looks like tommy uh goes for a bad pitch here out of the strike zone take a look at it two strikes tough pitch to lay off of that'll bring up perish with one out and nobody on drive down the left field line that will be found willie wilson is out of the lineup as we told you with a full muscle tom paquette is playing in left field today's paper quoted manager dick hauser saying that wilson is not a power ball player he's a speed ball player and when he has a pool of muscle he's just average ball player something to that effect here's a drive hit deep into left center field is going to be caught on the warning side lance parrish flying deep to otis and left center number three and it's always great to hear from our friends in the kalamazoo area and we want to give a special hello to gordon anderson and jerry raffle from wkzo who make these telecasts possible in the kalamazoo area we appreciate your gang as we go up and down the network on this opening night alan trammell batting with two outs and nobody off [Applause] i'm going to say a moment ago hauser said wilson just averaged with a cruel muscle he said i'm not average at anything he said i'm a 300 hitter with a pull muscle i'm better than that when i'm at full strength got to be a little careful what you say about these athletes one and two to trammell lance parish in the tiger bench ball two and strike two tigers have only one hit that was a lead off single by ed miller ground ball to sharp washington flips the first tigers go out one two three nothing across we go to the bottom of the second it's kansas city four and the tigers copyrighted telecast is presented by the authority of the detroit baseball club is intended solely for the private and uncommercial use of our audience any publication republication re-transmission or in the use of the pictures descriptions and accounts of the game without the express written consent of the detroit baseball club is prohibited frank white ul washington tom frequette do up for the royals four to nothing kansas city leads it here in the second inning the pitch to frank white bouncing ball foul barely just outside the line right on top of the play third base umpire steve palermo let's take a look at that al see if it missed by two inches or six inches or what try to paint playing him off the line uh normally not a pull hitter but you can see the ball just going foul one ball one strike morris delivers down low ball two and strike one this crowd in a very festive mood with the royals off and running four nothing ball two and strike two the pitch to white he checks the swing and this is going to be a tough play fake [Applause] he's had two tough plays in just uh less than two innings he sure has well he gives i think al he gets himself in a bit of trouble with that funny call he goes down and then he comes up and that down would indicate safe and then when he comes up that's when he gets the argument ul washington batting takes it outside i'll tell you not many pitchers other than mars would have made that play all two and no strikes we've told you about this complex in kansas city many times just absolutely fantastic a beautiful stadium i'm sure that many of our listening audience has been here but if you have not and you're in this area you should come out here just a beautiful ballpark you scan the field for you in the water tower and right field looks a little bit chilly tonight that summer time it's refreshing wall three and strike one washington waiting on the 3-1 pitch fly ball to left urndon is there makes the play that is out number two and it'll bring up tom folks captain started the four run rally in the first inning [Applause] this fellow's been around a little bit al oh he's played boston uh i believe a short period of time in baltimore seattle i think time to check him out here i thought i had him but get away from me there's a strike fastball at the knees he's had some luck against detroit pitching uh career-wise 369 one home run and 12 rbis it was a change up and he got it up high one ball one strike the pitch from morris fouled away well to get us straight he played for kansas city he's played for boston and he's played for texas and back to kansas city we had him in the american league pretty good hitter he's had a couple of 300 seasons one ball two strikes that might get two into kansas city plays much better at home than they do on the road they gear themselves for the astroturf they like to run they don't have a lot of power this is foul we're in the second inning four to nothing the royals lead it two outs nobody on and the 2-2 pitch coming up to poket bouncing ball towards short alan thermal will make the play so he gets some one two three nothing across and at the end of two it's still the royals four and the tigers nothing [Music] here lou whitaker will lead it off followed by ed miller and then enos cabell for the tigers in the third inning the cubs this afternoon beat the mets five nothing at wrigley field cincinnati leads the giants five nothing at the end of six tonight there's a bunt that's foul atlanta five houston nothing they're in the fifth inning montreal two the phillies nothing in the fourth inning san diego and the dodgers will play a little bit later [Applause] bouncing ball to shortstop long throw and he got it what's some close plays [Applause] george these first baseman's uh on both sides refuse to stretch and these plays are very very close every one of them could have an argument on both sides i think whittaker is out rather easily not easily but more so than the other two there's ed miller he was ready to bunt and the pitch is down low and as you say al you could just get a extra half step uh advantage by the stretch boy that means so much aikens might get a full stretch as big as he is [Applause] one ball one strike [Applause] third inning in kansas city and the royals lead it four nothing on a grand slam home run by otis in the first inning ball two and strike one [Music] miller has the only hit off larry gurra bouncer to third base stopped by so miller is out third to first and the matter will be cabell enos bounced into a force play as first time up here's a drive in the center field otis picks it off and the inning is over tigers go out one two three and at the end of two and a half innings of play it's still the royals for the tigers forget now next thursday next thursday april 15th the tigers will be home in detroit to open the season that'll be the home opener it's not on your schedule but it'll be next thursday against toronto we have a limited amount of tickets for that game they're available at the advanced ticket office located at the corner of michigan and crumble but you better not wait because they're going fast the advanced ticket office is open daily from nine to six now that's next thursday april 15th for the tigers home opener [Applause] john wathen will lead it off he had a base hit in the first inning came around to score on the home run by otis [Applause] one ball no strikes four runs on three hits for kansas city they've made one error the tigers have no runs on one hit no errors in regard to tickets now don't forget you can still buy tickets the same as last year the easy way for all the tiger home games you can charge them on your mastercard or visa charge account just simply pick up the phone and dial 313 seven three hundred that's nine six three seven three hundred and let us do the rest of all three no strikes and our strike gawatan will be followed by brett and the nakeds strike two california won minnesota nothing in the third inning milwaukee beat toronto 15-4 this afternoon always starts off with a bang bouncing ball to third brooklyn spirals over to first white sox and the yankees postponed because of snow boston and baltimore postponed cold weather seattle's and oakland later tonight [Music] [Applause] it looks like that minnesota ballpark is going to be a fun one they look like the home runs go out there pretty easily i'll tell you it's been a fun ballpark this early in the year with the temperature at 70 degrees outside it was somewhat less than that the pitch to breath this fella flied deep to left center field his first time [Applause] up [Applause] and he pops it up oh that is a major league papa brookins is gonna have to wait until he comes down [Music] he hit it a mile high on the infield that's out number two and it'll bring up willie aiken to receive the intentional pass his first timeout royals scored four runs in the first inning but two of the base hits were what we called chinkers that just got over the infield through the infield uh corsotis hit the uh hit the home run but i believe jack morris is throwing the ball well a pitch and a drive into deep left center this ball is well hit and it is off the fence in the second base will go willie maysacres [Music] tip number four for kansas city [Music] [Applause] well he tags this one akins more of a full hitter but this one is over everybody's head you can see he has a good swing short hops defense [Applause] home run in tiger stadium to bring up otis who had a grand slam home run in the first inning batting with a runner at second and two outs [Applause] this is foul out of play akins is the first man to feast uh to reach base since the home run by otis [Music] [Applause] what breeze we do have tonight is blowing toward left field left center field it's beginning to move the flag a little [Applause] bit otis waiting on the one strike pitch [Applause] you got the high changer fouled it away well it didn't fool him any either i believe it's the first change-up jack has thrown tonight and uh of course it was a bad pitch up in the eyes he had a good cut at it strike two to amos this fella hit a home run his first time at bat in the world series you remember a few years ago against the phillies a couple of years ago [Applause] through the fastball by him otis strikes out no runs on one hit they strand the man and at the end of three it's still the royals or the tigers nothing son will lead it off in the fourth inning for the tigers gibson herndon and walking fuss against larry guerra four to nothing kansas city leads it in the pits to gibbey it was a strike he bounced to the mound his first time [Applause] up one ball one strike the it's the curt there's a strike got a breaking ball over one ball two strikes i think it might have been a little cold in toronto today well it was cold in michigan so i'm sure it was cold in toronto there's a line drive caught for the shark stop gibson hit the ball sharply into the glove of washington that'll bring up larry herndon who walked his first time at that the milwaukee club who packs about as much punch as anybody scored 15 times today to beat toronto 15 to 4. al ackermann fix them to win it all in the american league east they have an awful good offensive ball club whether or not they're pitching strong enough of course they always have fingers out in the uh [Applause] you wonder when he's going to start going backwards he has just been probably the finest relief pitcher in history for 10 years for 10 straight years and had his best year a year ago how long i got a ball and two strikes to [Applause] herndon and the pitch the strange deal the cardinals know they had suitor and fingers and traded fingers away along with ted zimmern which ted did not have a good year over at milwaukee and a lot hinges on him coming back and being a player he used to be there's a ground ball to short big hop to ul washington who tosses it over to aikens larry herndon is out nevada will be walking fuss [Applause] guerra has retired nine batters in a row cincinnati five the giants nothing they're in the seventh atlanta five houston nothing in the sixth inning there's a bouncer to third lord another one two three inning for here nothing across we go to the bottom of the fourth four to nothing the royals lead it after a while first inning had settled down into a pitchers duel the tigers threatened they had two on with two outs when walk and fuss lined out to end the inning the royals came back on a grand slam home run by otis to take a four-nothing lead since then they've had one basement tigers have not had a base runner so the pitchers have taken over pretty much there's mcrae who was robbed of a base hit by brookins his first timeout ray jerry martin and frank white oh my god a ball and a strike kansas city might be out one of the few ball clubs in the league that uses just one designated hitter mcrae against right our left-handed pitcher does not matter this fellow is a good player has been since coming over to the american league playing on astroturf been a real outstanding ball player was a pretty good player until he hurt his arm and now can't throw anymore and has been moved into just the designated hitter role and does a great job one ball two strikes let me get two and two to mcrae he's unhappy here i don't know why but uh he was wanting to be traded this spring well he was uh wanting his contract extended and he's i believe 35 36 years old and [Applause] i would mind having an extended contract too if i was 35 36 years old they got him fast fall over the outside corner and mcrae has called out on strikes well here's when jack morris is sharp when he's effective when he's pitching well here's where he has to get the pitch outside corner low if he can but jack has to keep the ball in the outside corner third strikeout for morris and the better is jerry martin who struck out his first time up bounces it foul the difference in jack moore since the first inning uh after the home run he came in very close on hal mcrae on the first pitch he came in very close on jerry martin on the first pitch and these players have not been standing in there quite as as strong as they were the first time at bat here's the change up and a good one he got that one down low yeah the scoreboard a little messed up i guess the cold weather having a little effect on it that's opening day making mistakes the players do tell you it's just a delightful evening i think here in kansas city much better than i could ever have hoped for i finally took the advice of my wife and brought my heaviest coat and i don't need it no you could get by on that little light when you used to carry around struck him out again four strikeouts for jack marks that's out number two and it'll bring up frank white well here's the same pitch again he pitches me through a fastball inside here's a slider perfect pitch low and away corner nobody can hit that all you do is a hitter you try to foul it off and make him come in there again with another pitch [Applause] frank white was thrown out by the pitcher his first time out talking about jerry martin a moment ago he had two great years in chicago he had 19 home runs one year and 23 another last year with the giants he only hit four [Applause] george sometimes i get some mail when i mention the fact that you try to foul a pitch off and yes i used to try to foul pitches off uh sometimes on a perfect pitch you just try to hit it out of bounds someplace and uh and it does happen you try to foul pitches off at least i did sure you do luke applin was a master at it was he not oh he used to say he had he fell off until he came right down the middle with it there's one in the center field on the go is gibson still going he can't get it white's gonna stop at second with a double so a long double into deep center field by frank white oh looks like it is carrying an awful awful well tonight uh frank white not noted for this kind of power and look how far this ball carries [Music] gibson looked like there was a possibility he might be able to run under it but the ball like it bounced over the fence and came back [Applause] so our runner at second with two outs and the batter will be washington who flied to left field his first time out that's hip number five for kansas city they got three of those in the first inning [Applause] three of the five have been for extra bases [Applause] and our base hit in the center field nope it's going to be caught lying shot that just carried well that ball is carrying well right straight to gibson no runs they strand of man and at the end of four still kansas city for the tigers nothing [Music] four to nothing kansas city leads it some tiger fans out this is dundee michigan all right the same group uh that was in lakeland too i flew in today over love quite a few people on the plane coming to watch the tigers play this weekend they're going to have a good weekend of baseball brookins will lead it off tommy hits it right back to the mound kicked off on one hop by aguero 11 batters in a row retired by larry guerra and the batteries perish you fly deep into left center field this first time up you can tell when uh gur is pitching well he hits a lot of ground balls there's quite a few ground balls already tonight pitchers outside to perish cincinnati got another run they lead the giants six nothing red's batting in the seventh ball two in a strike atlanta still leads houston five nothing cubs beat the mets five nothing this afternoon at wrigley field montreal two and the phil is nothing bottom of the sixth bouncing ball to third [Applause] [Music] so parishes out third to first out number two and the batter will be alan trammell allen's showing no signs of the freak accident that he had yesterday [Music] he bounced out his first time up takes a strike on the inside corner 40 stitches right below the hairline very lucky it didn't get into his eye check swing his foul take 40 stitches on me i'll be out for the year boys will be boys but it comes to time when uh when boys have to grow up grow up can't take a chance with anybody's future he pops it up behind the plate it's going to get back on the screen still a strike two count to tremble and the pitch line drive one hop bobble by the shortstop looked like it was going to be a routine play to ul washington but he got away from him waiting to see uh what they call that paul uh as you know on the astroturf will stay down it doesn't come up as well as uh it does on natural dirt uh they scored that as a base hit very generous scoring and alan trammell gets credit for a base hit and he thanks him very much lou whitaker robot lou bounced to the shortstop his first time up [Music] one ball no strikes the pitch to whitaker outside the phillies got off to a bad start on their opening day at home steve carlton was hit rather hard and the phillies just were atrocious in the field committed three errors and a couple of more that they said could have been heiress here's one hit into deep center field otis drifting back well he goes back on a ball just just like you're supposed to go get him right to the spot camp sandra makes the play tigers stranded man we go to the bottom of the fifth four to nothing the royals lead it [Music] i want you to forget about the tigers home opener [Applause] [Music] tom paukette will lead off he's had a hit in two trips takes a strike at the knees kansas city scored four times in the first inning and that's been the scoring in the ball game the pitch is in for a strike [Music] they tell me the game in new york has been postponed again tomorrow yankee stadium is covered with snow boston at baltimore today postponed minnesota and california are tied 1-1 in the fourth inning no cold weather in downtown minneapolis tonight not in the dome this is foul kind of screwy scheduling for opening days you had the warm weather teams playing each other it's kind of funny you had two california teams playing each other two teams were dope two teams with domes and i know it has to be an awful tough job opening day but it seemed like they could do a better job than he did ball two and strike two milwaukee beat toronto 15-4 in toronto this afternoon seattle and oakland will play tonight a little later here's a drive in the left center tom bouquet has his second hit [Music] nevada will be john watson who has singled and bounced to third [Applause] they might go play for one run now they have a four run lead just try to add to it possibly stay out of the double play try to advance the man if they can not a bad play with brett aikens otis mcrae coming up we'll see how dick houser played nope he was ready to swing kansas city player is very happy playing under dick houser they seem like it's a more relaxed type of atmosphere in spring training and they're all very high about the upcoming season [Music] you know it's a strange situation now jim fry is one of the finest men i know in all of baseball and yet they had so much discontent over here he finally just had to move on and you wonder why well i have my thinking and players are different today with the guaranteed contract no trade contracts and it's pretty tough for a manager to have any sort of discipline when people have are making five six seven times more than the manager and uh also have guaranteed contracts and can't be traded fry is coaching with the new york mets now he coached for a long time under earl weaver at baltimore one ball one strike the change-up foul back i'll tell you one other thing too he succeeded a very popular and successful manager whitey herzog and that's tough born and raised very close to the stadium here but i guess whitey did not get along with the owner one ball two strikes a pitch stawathen how do i get two into i'm talking about the milwaukee club having some punch california ball club's going to have a little punch this year three mvps on the same team ground ball to tremble one out double play trammell to whitaker and back to enos cabell and they turn the double play take a look at a perfect double play on the astral turf ground paul uh generally bounces true and uh just a routine flip to second base and an easy double play and the batter is george brett who has flied to center and popped it up to the third baseman pitchers down low to brett did don balor win the mvp one year [Applause] he was very close i know one year and what they have jackson don baylor did win it i'm going to say he did it jackson lin and rod carew the year they won the divisional title i would say baylor was the mvp that or very close to it but they do as you mentioned george have a very explosive ball club again uh the name of the game and you can score a lot of runs but if you can't get the opposing team out they have to worry about their pitching as do most teams well they've got the senseis he's got some punch he won i think two ball games with home runs in late innings already bobby gritsch here watch it we're building these guys up too much they're looking for a catcher they're not exactly happy with downing bobby boom there's a fly ball to the left earned and back still going back for the ball is carrying well in that direction no runs in the inning on one hit nobody left and at the end of five it's the royal score of the tigers nothing four to nothing the royals lead it as we go into the sixth inning top of the batting order ed miller enos cabell and kurt gibson for the tigers they've had only two hits miller had a single in the first inning trammell a single in the fifth inning and the pitcher's down low tigers had one threat against guerra they had him at first and third with two outs in the first inning wachenfuss lined out since then mr guerra has been in control one ball one strike from the pits to miller one ball two strikes they're in the bottom of the eighth in cincinnati six to nothing the reds over the giants in the seventh inning in atlanta five to nothing the braves over houston cubs this afternoon beat the mets five nothing they're in the seventh inning in philadelphia montreal batting leading the phillies two nothing fly ball to right that's gonna be caught so miller is out on a flight or right to start the sixth inning the matter will be enos capel who is over two now you watch larry aguero pitch and you think uh boy this guy is just nice to hit at he just does not give you good pitches to hit he keeps the ball in and out tries to sink the ball down and away from right-handers there's a pop fly that's going to be caught by the second baseman white he jammed him with that one hit him right on the fist and enos popped it up so two quick outs here in the sixth inning nevada will be gibson who has bounced to the mound and lying to the shortstop gibby had a reasonably good spring training batting 276 had two home runs and 10 rbis this is out of play off to the right of the screen you got that one in on the fist of gibson kind of stung a little bit and the one strike pitch there's a drive into center field right straight to otis the gibson lines the ball to otis the tigers go out one two three we go to the bottom of the six still the royals four the tigers nothing [Music] box scored a run had a long double his last time aikens otis and mcrae against jack morris one strike to willie they got willie may aiken from the california ball club bouncer to shortstop scout a little in between hop but alan carmel played it well [Applause] joe akins now we're going to take a look at the grand slam home run in the first inning all the damage so far in this ball game right here on this pitch grand salami [Applause] he hit it didn't he did he ever fastball on the middle part of the plate [Applause] since then he struck out pitchers outside [Applause] kansas city has four runs six hits one error the tigers no runs two hits no errors [Music] minnesota and california are one one in the bottom of the fifth ball two and no strikes it's going to be dan petry tomorrow night against dennis leonard or right hander there's a strike then on sunday dave rosema will get a start against fighter blue i'd like to see by the blue i wonder if he can still throw the ball like he did running with oakland a lot of people say no here's the pitch a bunt then it's foul ball two and strike two kansas city gambled some pretty young prospects for vitable they're trying to win they feel that vita blue might be the fourth starter that they need [Music] he only won eight ball games last year with the giants which is an off season for vital blue there's a foul ball and six of the wins were against the last place teams that's markie anderson and his coaches [Music] we're in the sixth inning one out here's the kansas city bench they're contented for the moment for the four-nothing lead bouncer is short again we'll pause right here ten seconds for station identification you're watching tigers 82. two outs nobody on and the battery is mcrae who has lined out and struck out one ball no strikes to mcrae one ball one strike jack says uh if we could just forget that first inning everything would be hunky-dory the 1-1 pitch another one to tremble he's going to tie a record right here and throws them all out three in a row they go down trammell to first nothing across and at the end of six it's kansas city for the tigers number [Music] guerra working on a two-hit shutout at the moment delivers outside ball two no strikes [Music] and a shot in the center field for a base hit so larry herndon starts the seventh with a solid base hit the designated hitters tip number three for the tigers and it'll bring up john walken fuss john is lying to right bounce to third they're in the ninth inning in cincinnati seven nothing the red legs leave the giants and our strike to walk and fight they're in the eighth inning in atlanta braves five houston one bottom of the seventh in philadelphia montreal two phillies nothing the cubs beat the mets at wendy wrigley field this afternoon i think that would be a safe assumption don't you pretty good chance i would say 75 percent when whipping around there goes the runner and a base hit on a hit and run play walk and fuss who does that as well as anybody in baseball today slides it into right field and the tigers have them at first and third with nobody else well here it is and george mentioned john goes up on the bat and just tries to chop the ball on the ground second baseman was covering on the play so the tigers have them at first and third nobody out nevada is brookins who has struck out and bounced to the mound a hurry up call to the kansas city bullpen and from that delivery it has to be quisenberry going from the side he is the right-hander could be grant jackson the left-hander we'll have to check that out there's a strike brookins said it was a little bit low but dave phillips said it's a ball and a strike base runners turned in at third base walking puss at first nobody out as the tigers put on their first threat since the first inning strike two [Applause] [Music] guerra made a good pitch on him right where he wanted it right on the outside part of the plate [Applause] one ball two strikes tommy got a piece of it stays alive still one and two [Applause] well they tell me this stadium only seats forty thousand i'm going to say ah we've got about 27 000 here tonight 26. you're not going to go with the estimated crowd 30. i thought the stadium seated more than that well i'm not going to go against you that was close ball two and strike two everybody in the ballpark but brookins and phillips thought he was out [Applause] [Music] this is foul pretty good pitch by larry gur there you think two strikes two balls uh either try to come in with a fastball throw him an off speed look like a screw ball or a changeup what makes him so effective he does not have to throw his fastball to win ball two and strike two two on and nobody out and the pitch coming up to brookins this is foul change up and tommy got it right on the end of the bat i'll tell you he will not throw you the same pitch twice in a row here's the tiger dug out silent trammel standing three and two to brookins do you run him out keep him out of the double play i believe they will in this case i know four runs down that is going against the grain a little bit but i believe they will running guerra says feels like a shot at walking bus in casey started early sometimes on the hit and run play a man will start early you can pick him up fly ball on the infield ul washington will make the play the brookings pops it up guerra gets a big out and the batter will be lance parish lance has flied to center and bounced to third in two trips [Music] you have to take advantages of those men on third base with less than uh two outs over a course of a year it could mean uh 10 12 rbis for for a hitter and the one thing you don't want to do is pop the ball up on the infield final score from cincinnati seven nothing they beat the giants [Music] hop fly this is going to get into the crowd steve davila [Music] tigers trying to get back in the ball game they trail four nothing at first and third one out and a strike to perish as you look at the crowd good crowd here on opening night strike two like you might have quick pitched him gotta be ready larry guerra knows just about every trick in the book i don't believe now he will throw him a strike the next two pitches i think he will try to just waste him and hope that lance will go for a bad pitch there's a hard shot up the middle for a base hit walking puss makes the turn he'll go to third and with two strikes on him perish rifled one through the middle that makes it a four to one ball game just shows you how much i know i think that larry garrow made a mistake i don't think he intended to get it in the strike zone to give lance a lot of credit he hit a very good pitch the ball looked like he was sinking low and away let's take a look at the last pitch i would believe he was trying to keep the ball a little bit outside hoping he swing at it it's like a good pitch outside corner and uh girl good feeling uh pitcher ball was just by him too quickly covering up travel lose one for two allen had a single his last time up busts at third base perish at first and a foul ball back into the crowd four to one kansas city leads it and the bullpen is working overtime for kansas city wisenberry we know is the right-hander and it looks like the left-hander is grant jackson and a strike snapped off a breaking ball over the outside corner or he was strike two on brooklyn strike two on perish and now on trammell [Applause] tried to jam him with a fastball got it in a little tight one ball two strikes face runners walking fuss and perish in the one-two pitch this one fouled away lou whitaker in the on deck circle tigers trail by three guerra ready to pitch to trammel this one hit deep down the line but it's foul he had home run distance and pulled it foul there must be a stronger breeze blowing to the outfield than we can see from up here i see the flagpole now the flags are waving a little bit but uh unless that or the balls seem like they're really jumping out of here tonight ground ball to third he'll go to second for one out that's all walk and fuss comes in the score as travel bounces into a force play makes it a four to two ball game and the battery is lew whittaker good piece of hitting here uh even though he doesn't get a base hit but he protects the plate he puts it in play allen has good speed going to first base and uh he gets the base runner in blue whittaker has bounced the shard and flied to center bounces this one to second frank white picks it off throws him out tigers get two in the inning on three hits they strand them in we go to the bottom of the seventh kansas city four and the tigers too [Music] the royals lead it as they come to bat in the seventh inning and this crowd of about 26 seven or eight thousand standing for the seventh inning stretch they're going to be sending up jerry martin frank white and ul washington against jack morris i see the bullpen continues to throw out kansas city george there's two new ones out there now two left-handers just trying to get a little working i would imagine jerry martin has been to the plate twice tonight and he struck out both [Music] [Applause] [Music] there's a times from morris in minnesota they're in the bottom of the sixth inning california tied 1-1 with the twins seattle and oakland about ready to go here's the paper jerry martin lines it hard into left field [Applause] the newcomer jerry martin gets his first hit the batter will be white who had a double his last time up [Music] the hits are all even at six apiece the royals lead it four to two on a grand slam home run by otis in the first inning [Applause] white is a good bunner handles the bat well we might see the sacrifice here he squares to bunt the pitch is up high martin has fairly good speed he's not the burner as uh wilson or some of the other people on kansas city uh he used to run uh fairly well but has had leg problems these last couple years the pit's coming up to frank white a bunt and it's foul one ball one strike they traded away clint hurtle replaced him with jerry martin never did get the production out of her all they were looking for he was uh he was all confused over here at kansas city they wanted to move into have more power and then try to switch him the other way and he's better off with another team he was a had a few problems over here one ball one strike nobody out we're in the seventh kansas city leads by two that's why they paid third basemans a lot of money when they're creeping in to get the bump and crash one ball two strikes [Music] hard slider down and away [Music] five strikeouts for jack morris uh tonight that's that's kind of high for him he doesn't normally strike out a lot of people and if he could only eliminate the first inning ul washington is fly to left and line to center field hit the ball hard this last time up a low liner that carried straight to gibson this one off the glove of the pitcher and the second they say i don't know nobody believes it they say parish was there the left fielder whittaker was already past third base into the tiger dugout what happened here oh no extremely close ball hit the glove of mars yes it slowed it down just a little bit he uh of course it's a natural instinct on the part of a pitcher the ball is hit they're going to try to make the play and he just slowed it down a little bit where uh they couldn't make the double play washington runs well here's pocket he's had two hits tonight [Music] tom pocket started the ball game with the base hit there goes the runner no chance he picked a good pitch to go on a change of pace and it was down low and inside [Applause] besides that he had a flying start well jack you can get a good jump off of jack he gives you a very long leg kick he brings his leg back across the rubber and a good base runner will see that and can get a good jump did he swing he did one ball two strikes washington is second with two outs we're in the bottom of the seventh the royals four and the tigers too fly ball to right should be no trouble for ed miller no ryan's in the inning one hit they strand a man and at the end of seven kansas city 4 detroit 2. [Music] but the batting order for the tigers in the 8th inning miller cabell and gibson against larry guerra spike breaking ball at the knees miller's had one hit tonight in three trips right back so miller is out pitcher to the first baseman the matter will be cabell if again next thursday now april 15th the tigers will be home to open the season toronto will be in town and there is a limited amount of tickets available for this game you can get them the advanced ticket office corner of michigan and trumbull thursday april 15th tiger home opener the old weatherman says he's going to treat us a little better can't be much worse been a tough winter back home pitches in tight ball two and no strikes montreal batting in the ninth they still lead the phillies two-nothing houston batting in the ninth atlanta six houston one on a strike to gabel george you know the pitcher for the chicago cubs no ferguson jenkins 31. that's the number he's always won pitch the shutout today if it's fergie there's the pitch to and a line drive into center field enos cabell has a solid base hit december nevada is gibson who is 0 for 3. i just checked that was ferguson going back home well where he originally started his career and many great years this fella just keeps going on and on great competitor gibson batting with a runner at first and one out in the eighth inning the tigers trail by two fly ball to right coming hard jerry martin is there and he'll make the fly [Applause] so gibson pops it up in the shallow right field the matter will be larry herndon now gibby was going to try to tie the ball game up with a home run and uh of course when you're facing an experienced pitcher like larry girl he's not going to give you a pitch inside he sort of pulled him a little bit on the braking pitch and uh but curt was trying to tie the ball game up herndon has walked singled and bounced out tonight a strike good fastball about letter half top of the 8th in kansas city the royals lead by two [Applause] coming at one and one [Applause] it will be dan petry tomorrow night for the tigers and dennis leonard a hard-throwing right-hander for kansas city and we'll be here with you at 8 o'clock [Applause] runner at first basis cabell the swing [Music] ball two and strike one [Music] good shot from center field as guerra gets the sign and a pop up on the infield foul ground is aikens to make the play no runs in the inning on one hit tiger stranded them we go to the bottom of the eighth still kansas city four detroit two [Music] well we just got the paid attendance here tonight and like the man said 29 0069. 29.069 royals said this afternoon they were expecting about thirty thousand they just about got them [Music] this is john wathen to lead off he's had a single tonight in three trips rike makes it one and one three of the seven royal hits came in the first inning along with a walk and one of those a grand slam home run since then morris is not allowed a runner past second base ball two and strike one three three-in-one john watson waiting on the 3-1 pitch from morris and he pops it up parish near the stands oops he's got it good play by larry lance parish who crashed into the barrier hung on to it lance handles these pop-ups about as well as anybody yes he does of course lance was signed as a third baseman has made the adjustment to catcher rather well where's brett who is oh for three minnesota batting in the seventh they're still tied 1-1 with california and a strike to brett bottom of the eighth here in kansas city the royals four and the tigers too and a strike makes it one and two [Applause] [Music] the one-two pitch bouncer to short [Applause] alan trammell down low but cabell came up with it so brett is out short to first [Music] out number two a little bring up williams who has walked doubled and bounced out i there's a towering foul fly that may drift into the crowd brooking's over but can't get it [Music] looking ahead to the top of the ninth the tigers will have walk and fuss brookins and parish as they'll come to bat trailing by at least by two [Applause] [Music] right on top of the fence and bound it back into the playing field [Applause] [Music] take a look at it again [Music] jack must be giving his off-speed pitches away because he was really on the pitch take a look at his right on top of the fence and uh where else but on astro turf when you see an infielder field this ball lou whitaker feels the ball and holds into a double [Music] [Applause] [Music] runner number 16. that would be dennis worked for the e-r-t-h got him from the yankees and he'll play first place aikens had a big night here on opening night a walk and two doubles and the roar you hear in the background is for amos otis who has accounted for all of the kansas city runs with a grand slam home run in the first inning [Applause] this will be out of play jack gave a gave up a two-out double in the third inning got otis then a two-out double in the fourth inning got washington out now a two out double here in the eighth setting [Applause] and jack's having all kind of trouble with the baseballs and now the umpires is here take your choice dave phillips it's the way they used to do dennis mclean you remember he'd throw back one after another finally nestor or somebody would go out and say hey a pitcher will feel you know sometimes they feel the ball and one feels bigger than the other sometimes the stitches feel larger or smaller and [Applause] bouncer to the mound right back to jack he's got him out no runs on one hip they strand a man we go to the top of the ninth kansas city four and the tigers two john walken fuss will lead it off in the ninth inning for the tigers they trail by two the pitch is down low johns had a hit tonight and three trips and he scored a run four runs eight hits one error for the royals two run six hits nowheres for the tigers grounder to third brett over to first so walking fuss is out third to first and the better will be tom brooke tommy's looking for his first hit he's over three 29 0.69 the paid attendance here tonight as brookings looks at her strike final score in philadelphia montreal two the phillies nothing this is foul cincinnati seven the giants nothing the cubs five the mets nothing and they're underway in los angeles san diego and the dodgers one ball two strikes [Music] tigers batting in the ninth one out nobody on and they trail by two foul ball out of play well jack morris has pitched a strong ball game but uh larry girl i believe has topped him he has been under control pretty much throughout this game but it has to be encouraging for jack morris after giving up the grand slam actually uh the first two hits were the real cheap kind and then the home run was not there's a ground ball to short ul washington will flip it over to first out number two here in the night then they begin to head for the exits it's up to parish two outs and nobody on well lance has hit the ball rather hard tonight hit a deep ball into deep left center field and then the line drive base it to to drive in a run there's a high fly ball that should reach the crowd down the right field line one strike to perish batting with two outs and nobody on except one and one [Applause] foul ball back on the screen [Applause] one ball two strikes the crowd beginning to roar for that third strike from gerald and he fouls it away ooh that hit him on the foot i think it does and uh that hurts particularly uh with it being so cold [Applause] don't forget tomorrow night eight o'clock we'll be here with you dan petrie against dennis leonard don't forget opening day in detroit thursday april 15th toronto will be in town very few tickets left for that game one ball two strikes ball two and strike two you reach back a little bit on that one i believe it's the hardest pitch you've thrown all night [Applause] here's the two toothpicks we'll make it three and two full count to lance parish with two outs and nobody on and the payoff he pops it up worth has plenty of room all the way but he made the catch perry popped it up to the first baseman the tigers go out one two three in the ninth inning nothing across final score of the ball game kansas city four the tigers two and we'll be right back well jack marsh gave up four runs in the first inning tonight a couple of cheap hits as al said to start the ball game brett flied deep into left center field the runners moved up the decision was made to walk willie akins to fill the bases and amos otis who's been an old nemesis of ours al for a long time came through with a grand slam home run well it looked like it was going to be one of those nights for jack morris a lot of runs scored but to his credit he settled down he pitched well throughout the rest of the ball game uh it's unfortunate that the first two hitters uh happen to get the cheap hits but that's part of a part of baseball but it's very encouraging to see jack come back and pitch well throughout the rest of the ball game and uh has to be a sort of a i know he feels a little down right now that he lost but he has to feel a lot better than his performances down in spring training yeah he did not fit well in florida not at all and he said he was tired he said the weather was hot and once we get north it's gonna be a little bit cooler i don't think he expected this kind of cold weather but a little bit cooler and he said i'm gonna be better well after the first inning tonight he was better he allowed seven hits tonight three in the first inning four after that but as al kaylin pointed out larry girl was just a little bit better than jack mars tonight he blanked the tigers all the way until the seventh inning then singles by herndon and walking fuss put runners at first and third and finally parish came through with a single to drive in the first tiger run and then uh alan trammell with a good piece of hitting i thought on a two strike pitch got in another run well the tigers sort of got some life in him in the middle of the ball game but this guy gura always has pitched well against detroit uh if you sit back there and look for a fastball down in the middle of play you're going to be sitting there all night long you're not going to see too many of them you have to guess with him a little bit to try to figure out his pattern uh i thought we'd do much better against him tonight we had the type of hitters that i thought would would do well uh not the home run type hitters the ones that spray the ball around but again you have to give him an awful lot of credit he's been a tough pitcher throughout the year and a mighty tough one against detroit well i thought they did work better against garrett tonight they went to right field miller had to hit the right field herndon had to hit the right the hit by parish went up the middle uh the hit by walking fuss went to right they were not trying to pull the ball like they normally do again well that's what they have to do because he he wins his ball games by guys trying to hit the ball out of the ballpark because he's not going to give you the pitch down the middle the fat pitch that you have to have at the home runs we're going to send it back now back to the station in detroit where eli zarat has put together a few highlights of this ball game and we'll send it back to eli and he'll send it back to us in just a few moments thanks fellas the lions score two runs for the tigers six hits no errors the royals four runs eight hit one error so the tigers are all in one as george and al said jack mars although a shaky start did pitch pretty well but to be honest about it the tigers really didn't have enough offense to expect to when larry gore took care of him pretty well let's take a look at some of the highlights it really all comes down to the first inning of this ball game that is the story pretty much centered around this first inning grand slam blast by amos otis off morris amos led him in rbis in 1981 and looks up to the task again this time around scoring before him poket wathen and willie aikens who was intentionally walked to get to otis meanwhile guru as we said doing his job admirably retired a dozen tigers in a row as the tigers had only two sick hits through the first six innings in the seventh they mounted a mini charge lance parish not the single pass guru that scored larry herndon who had led off the inning with a single and after that alan trammell made it a 4-2 ball game he grounded the third and that scored john walken for us who had made a nice hit-and-run single to right so that is that two six and all again for the tigers four eight and one for the kansas city royals and tomorrow it will be dan
