proud hadn't even been born when ABC's is his first firecracker let's bring in right now a man who on that day in 1961 actually did his first television show a man in the pits always crispy kind of Mackey the editor of the maximum speed sport user today is also our expert on the comment area tonight the heat gym is gonna really be tough on the participants in the pitman so I didn't look Jackie some of the crew members lose up to 9 pounds on a day like today servicing the cars will be a lot of pit stop the track has never been resurfaced and all that the Prius worn out it's going to be repaved after the trace and they say with this heat and the track condition it's going to be tough on the driver okay well let's check the starting field number 11 is the fall/winter Cale Yarborough at a speed of 186 point eight zero three next to him number 72 Benny Parsons moving to road to and car number 21 is the racing grandpappy David Pearson of Spartanburg South Carolina next to him car number 27 Buddy Baker 92 is Skip Manning outside of him is number 14 cuckoo Marla then we have the king of the stock car drivers Richard Petty car number 43 looking for his first win of the year 88 is Darrell Waltrip number 2 is Dave Marcus Wausau Wisconsin number 15 is the veteran Bobby Allison of Hueytown Alabama in row 6 dick Brooks in car number 92 California number 48 from the sports car sir canal over then we have number 1 Donnie Allison number 54 Lenny pond the rest of the field strung up behind them but it looks like we're going to get a start well Jim the prize money's $186,000 the winners gonna get more than $20,000 and that looked back we had at the beach race the total prize money those days was only thousand-dollar okay racing conditions not good so hot it is overcast giving the edges a little bit of a break standing by now for that green flag that will send them into turn one on the inside there's mail Yarborough out for this with any and the green flag is out there racing [Music] going down low challenging for the lead David Pearson car number 21 challenging Yarborough and penny partners for the leaf three cars of rest now that is sensational racing racer and there is Benny Parsons number 72 taking the lead right now and nipping in behind him is number 27 Buddy Baker moving ahead of Yarborough and Pearson there going 175 miles an hour Jim - side by side door handle Drucker a remarkable talent and there goes Buddy Baker number 27 as he always does getting into the lead just as soon as it is physically possible for producer like the lag at all nobody has a tough day today two days ago his younger sister on the way here for the race was killed in an automobile [Music] now that the bullet riding in first place in fact is bloody Baker there's a good look at the lead shot of the cars flashing by Buddy Baker in first place Darrell Waltrip in second place and Benny Parsons Malley in third place is Mark constantly being shifted here in the early going anyway it's the Firecracker 400 shrews about possible oil on the track they say that a spot of oil spreads much wider on a hot day than it does on a cold day the 500 years Ben Roy was three of that Senate looking for that today it forces this place is a moment our Cale Yarborough and David Pearson [Music] well Evan you see Pearson like he's just a little bit but those five are definitely moving away from the rest of the field is really hot new year national championship and the tiger at the wheel small feasible South Carolina what are the pleasures of fellas to talk to in the sport of stock car racing to look at this house close the raising is moneymaker spot over $27 Waltrip is 88 and they are the ones new cards at the moment no David Pearson the Sly Fox never seems to be in a hurry during the first half the leaders of all the stock car drivers but he never seems the kumano Kuwait they going on there [Music] wearily wind up because he gets out of the draft [Music] taking the lead is followed by many partners number 72 and the they were still in the trap mine back in four places the remarkable here and Buddy Baker down-low [Music] it's almost like a district is dance that they do out there at 185 miles an hour and upwards but it's not rehearsed you totally unrehearsed on the other hand however these men have a great feel for each other's techniques of each other's abilities racing against each other we can't believe in hereafter here right that's right it's a 30 race season NASCAR has given and white boys race they really know one another and get along that way and they have a lot of respect for one another - and now back in first place again is a man notices the cars or the higher half of the fragments assessment to be [Music] watch your mouth [Music] down there that's why the track employed Amiri service what this race is over that particular Turner was Buddy Baker moving back into second place you have a yellow flag out there is no accident of any sort the word is debris on the track [Music] so we'll take a break and come right back there's Elly [Music] Buddy Baker in number 27 you saw number 72 in Darrell Walker [Music] along with card over 21 yeah why beginning line there him [Music] once again there's those Parsons followed by Darrell Walker moving ahead of Buddy Baker [Music] yellow flag for debris on the track and that was the photographer's lens yeah I'd like the madam raising murders wrong [Music] they're very safety-conscious here and that's why they float the right darling [Music] once again those five lead cars begin to the edge away from conventional feel here many years ago was a week of infection Walker [Music] action on the backstretch is some kind of a spin and drag there we have number Halo 5 Bruce Hill right and skip Manning there's lucky wagon in car number 39 trying to avoid this pending impact on the race course here now banning getting out of his car Oliver's running over [Music] can't really tell what happened what's on the back striking killing Danny gun [Music] what you do under these circumstances there's nothing much you can do debris flying off the face spa grounded route to a stop I'm here that still is okay Manning made a bit of course the cars are damaged enough where they cannot continue well you can't see fruit moving inside the car and apparently a relaxed fashion looks like he is okay however the yellow is gonna be out for a good while here at the Daytona will be back of course for more action now for an event scene earlier on wife of the sports is Jimin [Music] the Hayward Wisconsin for the world lumberjack championship now however this is Jim McKay along with Christie kind of Maggie back again at Daytona International Speedway under the yellow right now in car number 11 the leader is Cale Yarborough number 54 that's Lenny pond has moved in the second place in the race at the moment number 21 David Pearson the first three cars many parts is number 72 is in fourth place behind them and it looks like we're going to get a restart yeah the green flag is out racing again at Daytona hi it's safer that way just Cale Yarborough in the lead Lenny found a second Davis here to disturb enough anymore [Music] Carolina very much a factor here he was part of the early going but he is now behind him our Benny Parsons and David Pearson 20 makers out of any trouble [Music] Cale Yarborough's mechanic of last year working on his car her lab and he went up there [Music] once again moving into second place extremely hot temperatures near 100 degree mark and just about that so far however the attrition of the cars is not going down low trying to pass 25 and he does know David Pearson back in second place and this boy has been for much of the day Yarbrough first David Pearson say no he's away with a superstar to stock by raking the same things always need to be up there coming NASCAR races July 30th the token of the Pocono 500 August 6 Talladega 500 now a man [Music] right now however still pretty much raping and they put on we an incident involving Bobby Allison we have a mullet another look at exactly how that occurred David Pearson on the same bus because of that yellow frame here that's right Ayurvedic since I put in the green spikes all lap down and thanks to the yellow flag is back up here with the leaders now trying to Lelaina their scale charge on the average speed now go over 150 miles an hour despite the slowdown on the race back right now they're in the her smile an hour mark of there goes David Pascal okay David Pearson crying yeah from Carol Yarborough once again Alice's right front tire blew [Music] at the head of the straightaway and the side of the car he was okay yeah look at the cause [Music] now [Music] with the leaders at safely what he wants to understand again there's a second than many Dave Marcus number two we'll be right back as most racing continues under a broiling Sun as daytona que habrá being pursued and now being passed right David Pearson number it's been back and forth all afternoon famous all year long yes been able to run number 21 car and now he's definitely able to run ahead man at will it see the seeds are taken when they near the finish to see how they start setting up on each other in third place number 72 is penny part that's been having trouble in here [Music] that makes his farm turn memory as double driving well before the race began today [Music] there goes Carol Yarborough taking the lead again madam would kill you [Music] worn out refresh what about the track tail it's talking about it being worn out what does that mean and at the wheel what does it mean well the track being worn out is though really means is asphalt itself they just lost its line and has no adhesive whatsoever and the car is uh you know when you go into the corner the car just gets into a four-wheel drift and you just don't have any thinking power the track does needs they'll resurface job but you know I guess it's just as fair for me as it is everybody else so it should be a good right comments cale yarborough before the race and they're here now walk through the card over 88 and here is many partners separate from any have some [Music] and makes one of the bars no señor does this outro right now either it's getting to be a repetitious story but David Pearson has retaken the lead from Carrie over [Music] here sixth place cars the first one there is Richard Petty go through them [Music] leisa to hear the last 21 [Music] celebrated his 41st birthday two days ago and he said definitely lifer him did not begin in 40 homes it's better at 21 right now Richard is looking pretty good there is many Parsons being wheeled away the afternoon is done well at least he can go get cool [Music] the next problem is over there's our waltrip mixing it up right now with the leader [Music] why usually rates it so well here Richard Daytona trackers but always been your racetrack yeah I think you started drafting here many many years ago and you always do well here what is it about Daytona that works so well for Richard Petty well I know this gift is just a combination quickly you know we usually have a pretty decent running car and you know and defang use the handles pretty good you know in the last four or five years the tracks got you know really wore out and and the deal is that as you run a while the guy gets the slick that the cars can't run wide open and we've been able to get the course set up most of the time we could run wide open maybe a little bit longer than some of the rest of them and it's made a difference now you know today if we could get the car the handled Ridge Winery and I wide open all day then I'll be right in the thick of it if I can't then they'll relatively well at the moment Richard Petty seems to be driving an old fashioned petty race [Music] rethinking second place from darrell waltrip the leader is still cale yarborough no race goes on and they Kaname well the chess game 185 miles an hour continues at Daytona David Pearson has yet again [Music] 21:11 it went one way or the other most of the afternoon and now here comes Darrell Waltrip in third place car Wanda and memories of the days we don't hear Karthik same 24 these days but the normal fit stuff under the greens those feeders of the Esther 14.9 good pit stop here in fact comes Richards heading in car number 43 it's really a vision under the the right front wheel press making a chassis adjustment he's shifting away from one side of the car to the other the problem for Germany is make fall [Music] [Music] still Yarborough's trailing David Pearson 21 and 11 just about as close together as they could get let's get a report from Chris now I'm coming out it has just got into the lead the last for the driver okay Chris and here comes Davis Pearson number 21 heading you away into the mid yellow at this place would certainly favor Yarborough the only man still out there here is the most famous pit crew bang out again Cale Yarborough's still on the race course he would love to see it yellow but there's no side of it right now and very very green Dell y'all broke 38 years old from tippin's built South Carolina one of the shorter men among these drivers five feet seven but he's a compact 175 pound Yarbrough into the pitch again let's go down the creek [Music] fire [Music] [Music] reach his maximum speed accelerating as he goes into turn one the standings at this moment been David Pearson followed by Yarborough Lenny pond Darrell Waltrip and Richard Petty will be returning here for the matter back to the world of rejection in the 1978 edition of the Firecracker 400 stock car race this is Jim McKay was Kristen Carter Mackey and that's the lead car number 21 of David Pearson in second place story much of the afternoon car number 11 Cale Yarborough 21 or 11 leading 21 for a long long time in third place right now is this car number 54 driven by money in 4th place down Waltrip in carnival [Music] put him a lap down it looks like you'll go another race without a victory without a victory his longest losing swamp in his long career boy it certainly is one of the NASCAR stock car races Richard Petty the king of the stock car drivers but the king of this race in the moment is number 21 David Pearson another veteran 43 years old a grandfather leading very merrily or [Music] work his way back up among the leaders on this circuit and now has been having an upstanding record for that several years well everyone is talking about the heat I see before the race you've got a towel in your hand what's it gonna do to you Chris I tell you the best way I can explain it is it's like going down the highway with your windows rolled up and your heater on on a hundred degree day I believe Talladega last year was awfully hot extremely hot but this is probably the hottest conditions that I that I can remember racing in particularly when you're in a draft you get bumper-to-bumper behind somebody and it just the heat off of his car and heat off of your car it's it's really unbelievable it's almost I don't think I've experienced anything like it and it's really hard to explain but it's uh I think a guy get a sunburn in everything physically though what happens to you one of those circumstances well Chris you you know it's hard to breathe the air in the car is so hot just see me hot in there it's like being in a steam bath almost and it gets hard to breathe and you start you know grasping for fresh air and you can stick your hand out the window and funnel a little air into the car and that helps and then the next thing is a dehydration you once you started to hydrate you get dizzy and hopefully you can make a pit stop along that point in time maybe it'll all work out to where you'll be in the pit you can get a cold towel and something to drink and continue on what about getting laid traditional bucket of water thrown on you're doing a pit stop is this help at all is it helmet and everything they could down the visor well you know I've tried that we spray water down my back and that's almost desperation when you get to that point I found it with the sand and the dirt and the grit and then you get your uniform which it's you know it's got first racing it's full of first racing but that water goes in the floor of the car and the floor of the car is so extremely hot that it just added steam the water just steams up and it's again it's like trying to cook one of the more articulate numbers of the NASCAR circuit you're a star boy they're feeling it up there right now [Music] David still hanging on to many people have watched this race like Buddy Allison up against the wall coming out of and we had an earlier incident that brought out one of the first yellow there was skip Manning number 92 what are the principles the other was Bruce Hill a former NASCAR rookie in the year [Music] what's that late no injury there are good many other prominent drivers among the spectators at this point for example Buddy Baker every meeting early Brewers engine many parks and also had engine problems Donnie Allison brother of Bobby is also out of it very much into it's still that same fair 21 [Music] it looks like they're going into the pitch right now we have not that car but this one you going to see here right 88 Daryl Walker hood in third place in the rain he they lose again a lot because this is under the green flag force and the seconds are flying by these two the unofficial time at the bottom of the screen tough break for Waltrip [Music] okay start testing the past Waltrip before he comes back out again going to be close the area right now and they've got it they've putting collapse or Darrell Walker of course the building [Music] is all-important we return they come way for the closing laps of the Firecracker 400 the lead car number 21 is David Pearson second car number 11 Cale Yarborough's been that way remember much of the afternoon there's a duplicate reporting along with crystianna makya [Music] with them like Darrell Waltrip and Richard Petty and Lenny Pond have all had to make kid stuff from the green flag and then his foster burlap penis [Music] don't see who will he get back of the same funny how you look real up like when you're a lap down there's penny I'll go a lap down staying right up there with her okay patty fourth place remember closing in on the Darrell Waltrip at the third place to here are the leaders clatter hey Cale Yarborough sliding down going to get available all right so far absolutely control headed for the wall [Music] under control into the [Music] [Music] something is the best would you believe deletion now yes not only did he's not lose a lap he is also going back in first place because here in event let's take a look at it [Music] [Music] get down on the bed this is really difficult each one of these things great on this foot [Music] [Music] Rohan David Pearson still in the pits remember car number 21 back out again second place number behind Cale Yarborough and here from another angle another look at this virtual subscribing performance right here by the word way the word on that salad and he had a flat fire between [Music] firecracker 400 well the steam is rising from the part of plant fans on [Music] did you see we're in the final lap now the Firecracker 400 is it going to be Cale Yarborough or will it be David Pearson well right now the interesting development as did you'll see here says second front rows and Yardbirds it was when we were two on the other side [Music] [Music] [Music] well that is the point of course McHale wants to be in second place at this point in the race meanwhile we still have a pitcher Teddy inside number 43 in number 88 no their last album to write behind the leaders remember should anything happen to those leader we become the number one and two cars their own private battle for third place now once again a little more explanation for is if you will as to why he wants to be in second place the aerodynamics of stock car racing is Internet [Music] I'm pleased by the leading car [Music] [Music] it's happened here this is my race so many fine a second place [Music] as you say take the bait there are the among them is that there's one full lap between the second and Jew leaders on the same life just being apart David Pearson a43 Cale Yarborough wily veteran for ever have they just match about underneath five miles an hour David [Music] where the other guy would go not go where he goes better and where he goes poorly so they are before he breaks on the other man's capabilities on the train tracks he is really soon after playing that chess game with one another the gray boxes they call him from Spartanburg South Carolina still in the lead not where he wants to be but there's nothing he can do about it right now remember by taking a second pit stop under I made a very good tactical move they've got him in the second place where he wants to be there's no way it appears that fears they can get them out of it how it's like to have a seat now Walter passes view of this great battle for the lead nearing the end we'll be back for the finish [Music] what has been speculation of the now soon will become actuality one way or another means one left to go that's only one they are the only two with a chance to win the race we have Yarborough car number 11 in the favored second position because probably going into turn three he will make his move try to do that slingshot maneuver that we've been talking about now the back straightaway and into turn three that will be the point it's coming up very very soon [Music] hey strategy was black now what does he saw that turn up but this is the break is here to see the pressure is off right now when you come see on the landing flat side David Pearson winning the Firecracker 400 [Music] also just feet apart so it's all over as long lasting battle of wits and end of the eatery and Davis Henson and Cale Yarborough [Music] we're almost sad it was about a 200 yard area that made all the difference between job row number 11 on the right as he began his close in on turn 3 on David Pearson that watched just as he's moving up on him to make the slingshot everything the reason the flora car number 45 Baxter price was blocking it wasn't a maneuver by Pearson or de Jabra simply must be bizarre and time whatever the result it's all over let's get on to Chris nice job David congratulations I know when I got that lap down I had a flat tire I thought it was gone it'll be hard to catch up but everybody won that way you know if Michigan kale with a lap down came back and won it here today you call a lap down came back and won it when you get the lap down you go harder no I was going harder I guess all day long but you know I forgot the lap down and I could later on I've seen it they was everyone expected Cale the try the slingshot why do you think he didn't well he taught to in fact going down to lie back straight they were the soil carbon for me and so I jumped down in behind the slow car to get the draft over here I mean course he'll come down the inside of me and I went on outside slow car and he'd come down inside I think but anyway it worked out I and so it's David Pearson still well describe it this is the way it happened as we said about a hundred yards made all the difference after a 400 mile race Cale Yarborough couldn't do it because of the slower car that's the story from Daytona Jim McKay was pizza cutter Mackey report
