okay kevin thomas here uh i'm about i am about to uh try to tear apart my crank for um my h1 500 1973 kawasaki project and today is uh september 24th 2020 and uh enjoy i want to make it a a time-lapse video and see see if it can be done at home all right save myself about 400 bucks all right okay i want to do this real time what happens i've never done this before so just be aware so i'm good i've got all the parts to rebuild this crank so if anything's damaged as far as bearings and seals and rods that should be okay but anything other than that i'm not sure i would have expected it to let go by now there he goes hey one so this press is is uh i got this press from our freight 12 ton it's a standard rail run of the mill with a 90 dollar i think it's ninety dollars i've been 130 so i'll put that here so i know where it came from get this little bearing out of here now i'll press the center out look at that little ball of it that worked pretty good i'm not going to use a bigger socket here you got one right here yeah it should work fine just clearing i got a little nail pin right here i have to bypass that make sure enough press that should be okay if i do but i'm not sure try to get lined up center as this can all right [Music] it goes [Music] see the dow delby i don't know if you can see that i have to knock it out all right now i gotta pull these bangs not really any rust but yes it stopped right there so there is rust in it that's why i decided to reveal now i should be able to pull these off and this rod goes with this lobe and then we'll add the same thing here this down on this rod is right here so i take this off so i want to do that off camera pull these off just to save i mean anybody can pull the bearing right so that's what i want to do be right back okay i've decided to do this on camera i got it almost set up here and i just wanted to illustrate in this case somebody didn't know i got this uh from harbor freight as well this little puller i got several here that i've accumulated from working on my own stuff actually i could save money and buy the tools i need for maybe later next time i have to do something else it's a little more in depth i'll have the tools so all i'm doing here is tighten this up i have a little the rubber seal for between the cylinders is here i need a i need a socket and notice i got the anti-seize on the threads i learned that when i was doing putting keys in a truck the instructions that came with the tools i have for that say uh that you need to put that on there to save your threads hey that's a brilliant idea i don't think i'll do that so with that i'm not going to use a socket i'll use this attachment that's supposed to be in there anyway and i'll need a something flat to go in there i um another piece of metal i can use this they're right but if i have these tight enough this should pop that right off of there so let me get a wrench for that i think that'll work now if i'm strong enough that is the question yeah i think it will be so you see what's happening here so i'm pulling that off right but i'm not there yet so i want to tighten this down just a little bit i really don't want to damage the crank so let me find a smaller flat piece i think i'll wash it right there be fine nope let's open the bike i don't want to use that it's not a whole lot of pressure right now so shouldn't be too bad all the videos i see on youtube or on the internet at all never has the detail that you want well how do you do this how do you do that a lot of guys make a lot of money because of that [Applause] because nobody knows how to do it exactly and they don't want to take the chance to figure it out well i'm kind of the type to study on it for a long long [Music] time and then i don't usually try anything unless i'm really sure how to do it so get that put that there so i won't forget where it went that looks pretty good shape too that's what the seal rides on so now that i got this out all right i got more of these so i'm not going to worry about it um the only thing i might damage are those screw heads and i don't think i will because i didn't own the last one and the one that i did on the beginning on the uh first one i pulled off had one on it before so i'm not going to worry with that i'm just going to probably mess the seal up but uh i got another one i'll reuse those screws as long as i don't damage all right so about the only people that this may interest is people that have projects like this like the motorcycle i'm rebuilding like on the kawasaki triples club on facebook uh restoration um facebook group i'm on you know and all that that sort of thing so shout out to you guys all right here's how i put that on there see now on the first bearing that i pulled i used impact for this because it was really really hard to get that in there and get a good bite i don't think i'll have to do that i mean i may but if i get it to pull then i can go in and tighten up some more let's see if i'll strong earth i should have a better workbench huh so i want to loosen this up a little get a little better bite that bearing yeah that's good right there i'm going to tighten that up now with the range i'm sorry can't understand me sometimes a mumble when i'm doing something trying to get this to where you can see it maybe you can see it there so this is what we pay these guys uh part of the four or five whatever it costs to rebuild it usually four hundred dollars because i haven't really got a quote the minimum i've been seeing is about 375 just for the rebuild not for parts and i've got roughly 500 parts in these parts of dollars in these parts oh crap so uh i really thought that was going to come there so for the uh for money you can do it yourself granted those guys are very uh they know what they're doing i mean if uh if you need your crank balanced you know and everything you might want to send it to them but if you don't want your crank balanced and you want it just well you know mine's not too bad it's got a little rust on it but i intend to get that off it's not really any pits it shouldn't throw it out of balance i'm not gonna be drag racing this bike you know it's gonna be run every i don't know i don't know maybe three times to nine ten times a year maybe once a month so uh don't plan on putting a lot of miles on it so you know it may be worth it to you to send it to somebody that really knows how to tune it and balance and get it perfect you know like brand new um my my uh my career has always been in machining um started out in you know manual meals manual lathes and now i'm a cnc programmer it's been uh 32 years so i got a little bit of knowledge with indicators but anyway not to brag or anything a lot of guys like me you know but i just like doing this stuff and uh anyway enough about me what i'm gonna do now is take this off off camera because i may strip a you know head and when you when i get you back i'll uh i'll have it set up in the press and we'll do the next one all right thanks okay i'm gonna drop this in got those out no problem only one of them was a little tight but it i picked it with a hammer first with a screwdriver in it and uh it worked out fine i forgot to turn this this way didn't quite draw this up enough for my machine shop to get it right my intentions were to get this a little further back right there that way it would encapsulate the entire tube which it don't but that's okay it's working it's still enough to come out so we're good i'm just gonna put this in there if i can to the side right about there a little socket [Applause] [Applause] yes i already had a president you know i work on my cars and stuff a lot mainly because i don't trust people to do the work and so i've accumulated some tools and i'm glad because i can do just about just about anything on the car i just don't like being this close to this oh [Music] one more it could be dangerous that proves it okay right cut that one off and see we'll come back later while i get done with all these and flip this over and get that pin out i got any pins press it down get them all in and then i'll put them in as i go i hadn't really decided it probably doesn't go away won't mess anything up swap these out all right see how that's flush right there that's what you wanted that's what i really so i got my dimensions off of the machine shops not their fault got another pin right there trying to miss that get this washer out looks good i do that almost every time make sure we're recording here yes so if you're wondering how much a project like this costs if you're lucky and get a really good bike for not much money you know you'll come out better the the less money you have to spend on biking parts to rebuild it the better off you're going to be if everything's good they just have to be refinished or repowder coated every polished you know and don't have a lot of rust on it that's awesome my project was pretty much in a rotting barn on the outskirts of the barn for 20 years and i've got a lot of rust i won't have to spend a lot of money to uh get that going just to get the parts and then you know powder coating and parts replacements and labor labor is the only money you can't get back really [Music] it's not too bad of course i can take it apart and not put it together so and that'll be on another video all right [Music] now i have to pull the neck bearings and once you saw that you shouldn't shouldn't have to sleep this is just a little bit bigger bearing pretty much a dirt bike right now on this one so anyway i'll hook it back up when i get these pulled you've already seen it so should be good okay got it ready to go i just want you to look at the bearings and seals on that one the totally toast rust uh you name it is really bad so it needed to be done these old retainers here um or whatever you call them they need to be done i got everything to do it with so now excuse me i'm zooming in and out i know you're getting dizzy now i'm going to do the last one take it apart and call it a night and then tomorrow and then the weekend i'm going to clean all the well i'll press the rest of the pins press the pins out i might i might follow up with a video me doing that and uh how to set it all up and get it in order but uh i'll have to do a press video of the pins and then get all the rust off clean them up see how they turn out do a video of me placing everything back in order and then pressing it back together with measurements so on this one it's so far up here i can just stuff his rag in here to keep it from doing any damage to it when it falls if it falls which i'm sure will [Music] so i liked video that's why i decided to to do this video to help everybody out also to make memories of my own for me my grandkids you know and my family to enjoy seeing me on video because i'm not behind the cam i'm mostly behind the camera so uh this will give them some enjoyment for a long time but i do video a lot i used to video the kids when they're in band whatever it does if i'm here i'll uh definitely take video i'll video my hunting got several good deer hunts on there some turkey too and i made audio i mean uh auto repair that's videos by the way i guess i could go ahead and turn one of these over and do that i mean it's basically the same as this direction oh i think i'll do it i bet it fits better now [Music] uh first it's kind of tough that's nice and clean in there okay so that's about it for breaking down one uh i'll go ahead and break the other two down that's just one yeah it's just one i'll go ahead and do that i probably won't put this on youtube just out of courtesy to the professional guys that do these but if you're in the group you can uh you know let everybody know that i got one if they're really interested in doing it myself i heard it leaking make sure this is tight [Music] all right i'll see you on the flip side
