I can graduate [Applause] [Music] when he was a boy growing up at Mansfield Louisiana by the blues idol was Willie Mays he never dreamed that someday he'd be playing in the same ballpark with his lifelong hero and tonight the first batter that the sensational young by tableau will face in this game will be 40 year-old Willie Mays it should be just one of the dramatic moments of baseball's 42nd major-league all-star baseball game remember whitey Ford winner of 10 World Series games well today's pitching to his son Eddie boy is he catching on I like to stay on the young side with sensible exercise and sensible eating like Kellogg's product 19 the high potency cereal with all of the minimum daily adult requirements for vitamins and iron all the flavor - dad hmm want to get back on the young side stop with Kellogg's product 19 hi everybody I'm Curt Goudy of NBC Sports - call the play-by-play my television partner Tony Kubek we'll be analyzing the game and roaming the stands will be our man Lindsey Nelson bringing you between innings and happenings reports and here in the home ballpark of the American League Tiger Stadium it is hot and it is very windy the wind is going to be a big factor in tonight's game it's blowing from home plate to right field at 30 miles an hour and you know the American League is trying to stop an embarrassing eight-game losing speed the games have been closed five of the eight losses by the American League had been by one run but Tony Kubek the American League has just not been able to get over the edge Curt the games have been closed and when you look at this ballpark a hitter's ballpark and you look at that power laiden National League lineup you could almost see their eyes light up as they came out of the dugout especially with that wind blowing out to right field today the eyes of Willie McCovey and Willie Stargell the real power left-handed hitters let's take a look right now at this ballpark one known for hitting first of all starting from the left field line a respectable 340 feet but then you get to left-center field the power alleys the alleys were most ball our head 365 to left-center dead center field 440 feet a place where William Bayes will be able to go and get him tonight in right-center field a paradise for the left-handed hitters 370 feet in the right-center field power alley and just 3:25 down the right-field line with an overhang which is actually 15 feet closer in that vicinity it looks like a game of power this is the starting pitcher dock Ellis for the National League all-star team we talked to doc before the game about the all-star game and pitching to this American League team well Toni first of all it's a privilege being here and it's a privilege also being chosen as a starting pitcher and as far as the American League lineup I don't know too much about the American League I'm just going to go out there and throw it and hope they don't hit it that's about it doc Allison now let's look at vitae blue the sensation 21 year old left-handed pitcher vytas Curt mention will be facing a power laiden National League lineup let off by the great Willie Mays Gear's vitae blue well first of all Tony it's great an honor to be here and I'm happy about being a starting pitcher for American League all-stars and well it's face was amazing some other pop stars that have in the lineup is planing on in I guarantee you to have all respect in the world for me out there National League manager Sparky Anderson has a lineup he like to write out every day willie mae centerfield hi Garrett right-field Joe Torre third-base Willie Stargell left-field Willie McCovey first base Johnny Bench catcher Glen Beckert second base bud Harrelson shortstop and doc Ellis on the mound American League manager Earl Weaver could afford to smile on his lineup card to Rod Carew second base Bobby Mercer centerfield Carl Yastrzemski left field Frank Robinson right field norm cash at first base Brooks Robinson third-base bill freehand catcher Luis Aparicio shortstop and by the blue last year the nationally captured its eighth straight victory adding injury to insult as Pete Rose bowled over Ray Fosse to tally the winning run in extra innings but that was BB before blue vitae blue that is Hall of Famer Charlie Gehringer throws out the first ball and the ceremonial activities draw to a close and it's time for the fans favors to fight it out in a forty second edition of the all-star game [Applause] they pitch hit and throw champs tonight the nine-year-old champ is Dan Lang made of wheat in Illinois the 10 year old champion Chet Masterson of Vicksburg Mississippi the 11 year old champion David Swartz of Phoenix Arizona and the 12 year old champion Wallace Augusta of Gaston Alabama four hundred and fifty thousand boys participated in Phillips 66 pitch hit and throw this year the second year the nationwide program for boy and is turning into an outstanding baseball promotion for the boys in this country this 1971 all-star game is being brought to you from Tiger Stadium in Detroit Michigan the two managers Earl Weaver and Sparky Anderson will the umpires for the meeting at home plate let's listen in gentlemen we'll start off in fact I want to congratulate all you fellows for being in an all-star game mister spark Adam mister on waiver I'm fired it's really a privilege for me anyway we'll start with the break-up there up above it's out of play off the rubble it's got to go in the dugout if there's a glove on there we come as far as dug on the bullpen over there goes over two rules it's in the South Poles of yellow is a home run above it whatever it does if it goes into the stands is to basin comes back it's in play the flagpole which we have discussed about four times isn't that interesting if we go to below it's two bases if it goes above the fence it's home run it because packets inflate the left-field foul lines the same way the bullpen is the same way also now if it should go in where them fellas with the white shirts that are going to scrape the field in the fifth inning we'll call it that all right all right now the tarp if it's in play all right if it goes behind we won't call it that's right you can make a catch on now also the dugout is Scyther going if there's a glove the same way as your gentlemen good luck to both you thank you for coming out how do we get out of here [Applause] Kurt we saw the trademark of Ida blue running out to the mound he's running out to meet the number one hitter in this National League all-star lineup Willie Mays let's share what by tableau has to say about pitching to Willie Mays the first hitter in this all-star game well first of all turn let me say it's a pleasure for me for me to just be here but I think by the probably for me the fastball I've seen him pitch a couple of times and I think it's best pitch right now will be as fastball so I think he'll start no off the game with a fastball trying to get ahead of me but of course you never know about what what's going on but so I asked first myself I think I'd be swinging alright it's open against San Francisco the old rivalry the first I don't think any pictures ever come into this all-star game with more pressure this game doesn't count in the standing the vital blue just been hounded since he's been here by the press the radio the television the public ground ball the shortstop Aparicio up and willie mays without one down willie mays leads off to test the majors winning his picture when he looks at blues first pitch a blazing fastball isn't quite sure he's thought realizing his only past and faster will he swings at the second offering and grounds out Aparicio to catch Henry Aaron will be the next batter two of the top three homerun hitters of all time Mays and Aaron are hitting number one and two in the National League lineup which is an oddity berth Babe Ruth the top home run man this is the 20th all-star game the first time he has ever seen Tiger Stadium or played in Detroit the same for Willie Mays which I say is a strong endorsement he won the Gillette Trophy for the second year in a row as receiving the most votes from the public of any all-star player Henry Aird winning the Gillette trophy but that Mays and Aaron haven't played her I think the strong endorsement for interleague play the Tigers fans are really anxious to see them strike at the knees by Vidal blue how do you describe by the blue I think one way you can describe him a long loose arm a great athlete tremendous football player in high school marvelous rhythm big bounding ball to Brooks Robinson and history and a few times Joe Torre will be the next man up he leads the National League in batting with a 359 average 14 homers 65 RBIs the batters that we talked to the face fighter blue say he doesn't look as fast from the stands as he does in the batter's box at about a yard or two in front of the plate suddenly the ball shoots at you it takes off it jumps and it can sail it can swerve his fastball is alive that's his pitch it is he leads the majors in strikeouts we've had Dean and drove and Koufax and feller and Drysdale great pitches come in here Gomez never was 17 wins at the all-star break two strikes blue 17 wins a most of the pitchers had at the all-star break the previous I was Bobby feller 16 in 1941 and Denny McLain won 16 games coming into the all-star game of 68 the National acai was Drysdales 15 win Koufax marichal Andy Croll two down nobody on two strikes the dilatory playing Torey straight away a high fly to shallow center looked like an easy one two three inning four by two blue Mercer lost his cap look out Carew goes back and that's it and after Lake is easily retired by vital blue [Music] and so the American League now will come to bat with no score and here's Hank Aaron now number two of the order Hank has never had an extra-base hit in all-star competition and he still has it as he bounces out to Brooks Robinson on a high hopper Joe Torre batting number three Pop's out to Rod Carew and by the blue a 1-2-3 inning behind him characteristically traps from the mound of the dugout coaching for the American League Billy Martin the manager the tiger the former American League infielder mostly with the Yankees and Billy Hunter who also was an infielder in his playing days third-base coach of the Orioles Earl we were selected here tonight well all the talks been about vitae blue but here's the fella doc Ellis who has quite a record himself he leads his league in victories with 14 he has the lowest earned run average and he has a 12-game winning streak the last time he lost was to the Dodgers at Pittsburgh on April 27 since that date he started 13 games a 112 time Claude Giroux got off to a very slow start this year he's been recovering from a knee operation but he is sizzling now batting 283 was hitting around 210 220 a month ago he said over 400 in his last 25 games he's a bat control hitter he gets a piece of the ball most of the time his fifth all-star start playing second base Allison pitches high and away to him for a ball Bobby Murcer will be on deck and then Carl Yastrzemski the playin Carew straight away remember a 30 mile an hour wind blowing from home plate toward first base a ball anything hit in the air toward right field will be given a tremendous boost and the American League with four left-handed hitters in the lineup has advantage there's Mercer on deck of the Yankees National League with two left-handed hitters McCovey bounding ball to the second baseman Becker an easy play for him and there's one out Bobby Mercer who's arrived this year as a real star with the Yankees Tony Oliva did not play with a sprained knee so Mercer replaced him at the starter Mercer leads the American League and base hits with a hundred and three batting 341 not too big you wonder where he gets his power 16 homers 50 runs batted in he lives in Pittsburgh now he's born in Los Angeles now standing high jumper at Harvard junior college in white woman from California [Applause] [Music] Bobby Murcer hits one up the middle for the first patient of the game [Applause] Mercer at first one out no score last to the first dispense key found in all-star game record by coming up with four hits and lat at four hits in last year's game he had three singles a double he was voted the outstanding player of the game he played six innings in the outfield and six innings at first base takes one of the hardest swings in baseball three times in American League batting champ changeup bounce low lead a second technical half ago to first baseman McCovey Mercer advances into scoring position who down and Frank Robinson comes into the all-star game batting 310 with 14 homers 57 runs batted in he wants to manage he has managerial equipment but his own manager Earl Weaver says he's still too good a player to manage so where do you find bats like Frank Robinson now he's had the experience managing the last couple of years in winter baseball a good handler of men and it gives a lot of good advice to young player Mercer at second two down fine stop by Johnny Bench ball one the Frank Robinson Robinson was proud to plate probably closer than any player in the game tonight Letty's leaks many times and being that ball sends a ground ball the shortstop but Harrelson who gobbles it up the American League is out in the last of the first cutting he had no runs one hit there were no errors one left at the end of the first inning in Detroit it is nothing to nothing [Music] carl yastrzemski it's a bouncer to the right side too slow for the DoublePlay and Becker throws him out at first [Music] Frank Robertson bids for a base hit up the middle but bud Harrelson's scampers / gobbles it up and the inning is over with no score repeat after me I Johnny Bench I Johnny Bench have switched to Gillette Platinum Plus blades have Swiss Gillette Platinum Plus blade because they shaved me closer and with more comfort me too me too me too what they shaved me closer and with more comfort to you better just stick to catchy Gillette Platinum Plus double edge or injector both with platinum smooth edges for smoother shaves double edge your injector can I get some Gillette Platinum Plus injector blades for my brother sure John thanks at your local store Walter Alston a longtime manager the Dodgers is coaching at first base former coach of his and now managing at San Diego Preston Gomez hooking a third and here's the power king of the majors this year willie stargell yes 30 home run he had 31 all last season he's knocked in 87 runs leads the majors in both departments and he's batting for each one everything in his favor tonight a short right-field and a strong wind blowing for bright but he's facing a left-hander [Applause] by tableau hips Stargell Kurt that appeared to be the first breaking pitch that blew through he just threw fastball the first thing let's watch it again Stargell taking that fits perfectly turning his back to prevent injury a breaking ball he tried to overthrow and got inside the Stargell vitae blue now will face Willie McCovey who's been a player this year he just came off the disabled list he played four games he's going to have to have a knee operation at the end of the year he's batting 285 ball one doing 11 homers even though he's been a part-time player in 41 RBI one of the picture hitters in baseball hits with tremendous power and hits for a good average Stargell on first nobody out no score no no pitch again that quick Lynette ball just jumping in there that gets the home play [Music] fast ball boy did that one pop into Johnny bench's mill this fastball never moves it doesn't seem the same way ties he'll start a fastball low in the strike zone it looks like it's going in the dirt and it'll actually jump up those last couple of feet and get in the belt-high zone well of course the talk about blue is is remarkable control at the age of 21 Koufax didn't arrive as a great pitcher Billy was 27 26 lefty Grove until he was 27 it seemed to take left-handers longer but not this youngster he's walked only two points seven batters every 9 innings this year very good control thanks laughs a high pop foul back toward the seats free end going over and it's out of play [Applause] one strike and by two blue and his last two starts who quits nine innings and an 11 inning game where he struck out 17 against the angel didn't win or didn't lose he left with a score nothing nothing he hasn't walked a man in his last 20 innings that's truly remarkable Stargell on first one out one strike to Johnny Bench no score on the top of the second there's a high drive to deep black center that one is go god [Applause] outside fit by Johnny Bennett I would just about to say that blue doesn't give up many homers either that's the kind of pitch you rarely see hit up a hard throw fastball pitcher like fight a blue or a Koufax or any other hard drawer a pitch high and almost in the eyes of Johnny Bench that's the ball that usually really moved Swach vytas motion all alone he has a little bit of a pause but he's in his delivery and about here and which throws the hitters off a little bit and then that arm like a slingshot comes over the top but that time not good enough he got the ball up and bench really powered it to right-center Johnny bench's up now [Music] is going going and it is God [Applause] right center and the National League has dented by two blues armor by jumping off to an early two to nothing lead [Applause] I think the wind helped that ball too much the ball just jumped on it that landed over the 4:15 marker in the upper deck in right center strike the Glenn Becker that is a tremendous shot for a right-handed batter to the opposite field they can't hit him much harder than that Len Becker very hard to strike out adding 336 for this evening curve is hit deep in the left-center Mercer giving chase he's over there he's got it he down and frail bud Harrelson of the Mets coming up the key player in the myth he was kidding in a teaser I wonder how come they got all those other fellas hitting above me in the lineup how many guys like Aaron and McCovey a star how to be up there in the power spot he's batting 268 no homers 20 RBI 2 runs in for the National League in the top of the second broken bat flyball to right field Frank Robinson's there and that's it but Johnny Bench had a gigantic home run to right-center to give the National League to run one hit there were no errors and nobody left at the end of an inning and a half it's the Nationals too and the Americans nothing gentlemen in the dark sit with a glass of the Senator Robert Griffin in Michigan Charlie Gehringer next to him and Commissioner Kuehne in a white suit with a glasses and mrs. Jim they're in the commissioners box tonight norm cash getting a big man first base from the Tigers just a few years ago he was being booed heavily here by these hometown fans but he's having his best year in ten years he's tied with Melton or the White Sox for the lead in homers in the American League with 20 batting 293 he was mad about this all-star game Bob all Boog Powell was elected and then became injured Earl Weaver decided he wouldn't take another first baseman that he would he had Frank Howard in there and Frank Robinson are you spent with the very first the change-up is in - got mad at Weaver but they patched it all up now - that last year I wanted to play I wanted to play in Detroit I was mad for a while but then when I got to understanding it and talked to Rouen it's all cleared up - cracks up first strikeout for doc Ellis they call it the Brooks Robinson World Series last year and he's going right along since then having another good the year batting 294 with the Orioles we've had some key home runs this year he's at 10 knocked in 54 run ground ball in the hole Harrelson with a long straw to make and that's the play they test the shortstop on and they Scout a young shortstop can he make the throw from the hole alley sieve buddy Harrelson in the National League and not just the Mets all the other clubs that he covers more ground than anybody in baseball and he shows he can go to his right he can get rid of the ball made a great play in the all-star game last year to prevent a ball in Cincinnati from going to center feel and break up the possible American League rally fill free and this is a sixth consecutive start the longest starting streak of any American League players Ray Fosse was scheduled to start but he was injured and had to withdraw from the game freeing batting 279 for the Tigers ball one to him two to nothing National League ahead on Johnny bench's 2-run Homer Lee on deck batter is Lou aparicio of the Red Sox [Applause] [Music] the wind held that one up didn't quite get it scarred it looked like changed up and he got on the end of the bat well the end of two innings in Detroit Michigan the score is a nationally - and the American League nothing Bilbrey and it's a long fly ball deep to left field and Stargell hauls it in just shorter defense doc Ellis an athlete pitcher will be leading off against by the blue doing two delivery second strikeout for buy two blue one out in the third and Willie Mays that will he grounded out his first time always seemed to be turning that calendar back out there in the bay area first it was George bland at the age of 43 in football and here's Willie the age of 40 in baseball [Applause] this is Willy's twenty second game in a row and the 17 star he holds the all-star record many of them changeup high in the air in the right-center Bobby Murcer going over and as Frank Robinson is the wind kept blowing the ball back to Robinson taking it I think Mercer got fooled by that window knee Frank Robinson actually gave up on the ball he thought Mercer had it all the way now they're getting their signals straightened out there Willie Mays up on the 3rd and there's a high fly toward Mercer that strong wind begins to pull it away from him but Frank Robinson cruises over and makes the catch Hank Aaron steps in for the second time the all-star game has not been Henry Aaron bag well when he's played in a lot of but he hit only 175 he's had 10 hits and they've all been singled tonight he wants his first extra-base all-star here like something else he wants is to break Babe Ruth's all-time homerun record ninety-eight behind Babe Ruth his knee holds up with his health continues good he might have a chance one ball one strike you know it's odd Tony he's fourth of all time and extra base hits in baseball and he can't hit an extra-base hit in an all-star game as many as he's played in do down nobody on third inning and National League ahead two to nothing high fly ball the win [Applause] first extra-base hit hit home runs to the opposite field off vital blows blue did not make a bad pitch it didn't look like the ball will look like it was almost by Henry just kind of waved after ball just flipped at it with those quick hands and arms of his and the wind got hold of it and really pushed it out see how far back that ball is on Arabic look at that he didn't even have full extension down those arms you could see those hands had not come through yet was not hitting the ball way out in front yet the wind got hold of it carried it into the right-field stands the upper deck blues pitch and there's a long high drive till it's gone thank you first star extubate set and it gives the national acres a three nothing lead thanks the fans number one choice in the balloting and he doesn't let them down after league leading three nothing Joe Torre popped up his first time strike two anything hit in the air tonight there right watch out do down nobody on [Applause] crowd still buzzing right to a curb on the inside corner nothing into territories 350 batting averages even more amazing when you realize he does not have the kind of speed to be there at man Aaron or amazed or Matty Alou he's got to really hit all of his balls hard and get clean base sense drug him out in a curve ball the vitae blue lines up his three innings with three strikeout but he gave up two homers one run one hit no errors nobody left at the end of two and a half innings the National League three the American League nothing NBC television estimates an audience of 58 million total viewers on its network of 218 television stations tonight game is going to be seeing internationally tonight as well Mexico Puerto Rico Virgin Islands Bermuda and Canada were English and french-speaking Berger aired and the NBC radio network over 200 stations during the game and also Armed Forces Radio around the world there are men and women overseas Lou aparicio the Red Sox leadoff and the last of the third tell us his pitch is inside doing for a ball Jim Palmer will come in and pitch the fourth inning for the American League Reggie Jackson is on deck to bat for buy two blue [Applause] there's a base hit by a Perico [Applause] Luis Aparicio limes a single dissenter opening the bottom of the third now Reggie Jackson steps in the bishop for blue Reggie Jackson batting 272 for Oakley 17 homers he's bounced back this year 41 runs batted in a fine all-around player went for the high fast one and fouls it back end Ellis quickly has him two strikes foul again Ellis thrown the ball right by Reggie Jackson Ellis had been going with his slider off and on throwing fast balls and some pretty hard ones he's had arm trouble for the Pirates at times this year that usually occurs about the sixth or seventh inning when his arm starts tiring he hasn't fixed since last Tuesday he's had six full days of rest pirates were rained out on Sunday when he was scheduled to pitch one ball two strikes to Reggie Jackson doc Ellis pitched a no-hitter at San Diego in June of 1970 he walked eight in that game hit a batter and still fished - no hit no run game farmer up there a tremendous smash only eight players that hit the ball over they will fare in Detroit and Jackson nearly did it then out of the ballpark been done 13 times curt norm cash has done it the most four times man has done it 3 Williams has done it but that one was really a smash more toward right-center field longest fall ever to be hit out in that area was estimated at 560 feet by norm cash what a smash Oh [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] hit the light tower and bounce back on the playing field it's a two-run blast and the National League lead is narrowed to freed it - let's take a second look at that one everyone loves to watch a tape measure shot and Reggie Jackson there's no exception especially when it's his own [Applause] remember the homeland we saw him hit in Minnesota a year before last and measured five hundred and some feet off the top of the scoreboard there in the twin stadium they're still pointing up at the spot where Jackson hit that drive they can't believe it in the dugout big Frank Howard to your right here screen he looked even and on he says hit a hard one in this park [Applause] Bobby Murcer singled up the middle east first time a high pop up to the infield bud Harrelson coming in giving way to Joe Torre and Tory has to come all the way over by first base on the gallop if they get the wind blowing it's going through let's watch it again here's the Mercer swing pop-up that started off near third base but cubby just gave up on the ball we could Harrelson thinks he's got a shot but Cuddy still hasn't moved Harrelson saves somebody come here where are you and Tory comes into the picture looking at McCovey Carl Yastrzemski grounded out the company's first time he hits a high fly to left fielder Stargell Harrelson going up the wind holds it up look at that win hold that ball up and left everything hit the right giving a free ride balls into the air to left or being held up rod carew first two down frank robinson up the grounded the shorties first time [Applause] strike to him national egg ahead three to two in the last to the third [Music] [Applause] runner going foul ball they were playing hit and run Frank Robinson seen that runner breaking saw the wide open hole as Glen Becker had left his position tried to shoot one through that area a little bit late [Applause] a one-ball two-strike count to Frank Robinson the rule at first two down when Frank is trying to take advantage of that win why he was hitting late trying to get the ball in the air he's got a drive deep to right there that ball is going it is gone certain they talk about place I've got to believe that Frank Robinson the last two swings let's watch it again looks like he's feel you can see that right elbow close to his body to prevent that barrel of that back hitting out to so low the soil would not pull the ball they actually placed the ball in that direction which is pretty good hit it Franklin was the steps in with two down Carew still on Sue's well Stargell seen those other balls sale out there to right field he's taking dead aim now the Orioles could have four 20-game winners this year McNally Cuellar Palmer now Pat Dobson five he's won seven in a row and he has 10 victory valuable pickup for the Orioles when they got him in the crate from San Diego outside one and two Palmer has outstanding velocity on his fastball three or four years ago if they're to be washed up with arm and back miseries but he bounced back they throw down at first I think it's a strike they falling back to the backstop Stargell is out it was break free gift off the glove of three and went to the backstop Stargell thought the ball at tip these bat and so a strikeout for the pitcher and his sister to catch her in to put out for the first baseman the Baltimore trainers congratulate Sinn féin three up three down and at the end of three and a half innings it's the American League for the National League three Johnny Bench up who plays it over to first that's the kind of play that earned Robinson over a million votes in the balloting tops in the American League mention familiar with it seen to remember Brooke Robinson from 1970 World Series but in the Boer and more than one [Applause] that's why you can assured Johnny brain sees Butch Robinson in his green well Johnny Bench just went over to Brooks Robinson said to him what's going on is just the World Series all over again we talked to Brooks about the defensive play in this all-star game let's share Brooks Robinson told me this is a hitter's ballpark and the wind's blowing pretty good but I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see a couple outstanding plays it might win the ballgame for one of the ball clubs and there you saw one [Applause] only Davis backing up plenty of room one down [Applause] mike cuellar starting to loosen up fill free Anna's flied to left let's watch this famous Marichal lake kick at smooth delivery confusing the hitter hiding the ball the glove the lake coming at you and then the arm over the top I filed at Li Mei is going for down Lu Aparicio off the pitches love he'll have plenty of time though throws aparicio out and the American League's retired in the fourth they had three up three down at the end of four innings it's the American League four and the National League three now word on behalf of Major League Baseball the best entertainment in the country is still baseball for the cost of virtually everything continuing to spiral upwards baseball has done a great job of holding down the price of a Snickers in both the majors and the minors at tickets are reasonably priced and the show is the best in town where else can you so economically take your entire family for an evening of hot dog penis pop and just plain fun it just got the changes well many is going to hit number one in the National League lineup LeMay second Willie Davis will bat tonight solve a chimera Shou will hit 5th rock drill going for that ball and time cash out of the dirt one away what's heading bud Harrelson flied to right his first time one hopper to aparicio and make the two down [Applause] and Willie Davis of the Dodgers coming up this will be his first time at bat he's second in his league in batting with a 350 average he leads the National League in base hits 126 in doubled and in triple and this is his first all-star game I shot the right-center Mercer takes it on a hot Willie Davis is on we go to the top with a National League batting order Roberto Clemente the replace really Mays in that spot for the up for his first time Clemente has been the hottest batter in the majors the last three weeks he's hitting 461 in his last 20 games strike three in a slow curve Davis left a dad with any pot looking one hit there were no errors one left we've gone halfway four and a half innings it's the American League for the National League free raise your right hand repeat after me Irie kok rd i wrinkle cardi have switched to Gillette Platinum Plus plays to Gillette Platinum Plus blades the blades with platinum smooth edges for smoother shaves is the Platinum that doesn't huh just repeat the words Rico okay okay Gillette Platinum Plus double edge or injected both with platinum smooth edges for smoother shaves now say save 20 cents on this package of Gillette Platinum Plus 15s off for good while supply lasts hey it's 20 cents that's a good deal Massie Frank Howard hitting for Jim Palmer Mike Cuellar will pitch for the American League in the sixth inning Juan Marichal gets a strike to him thank you I asked Ted Williams once who hit the longest home runs he's ever seen and he said Frank Howard gone from the ear of Jimmy Fox right down to the present well when Ted would have loved to seen that shot by Reggie Jackson up there in the light hours tonight Howard has led the American League in home runs twice in the last three years this is the fellow that has six or eight eggs for breakfast a couple of steak as a starter huh just to warm up doing two count bounding ball the second base went away but Kurt we've mentioned that over the right-field fence there have been 13 balls it but an even harder and more difficult task hitting him out of the ballpark in left field only two players have done that Killebrew is one in Frank Howard who just grounded out was the other we're at the top of the American League batting order now and Rod Carew who's grounded out and walk he scored a run tonight marichal walks t Marichal doesn't give up any watch and the great control pitches in the game Bobby Murcer a single dissenter and popped the third burning fastball for a strike off-speed pitch took just a little off and had Mercer off his timing Bucky mouth first time Bobby Mercer has ever faced Marichal do down a Giants are trying to hold their lead in the National League West and this man on the mound right now will be a key form they can hold on for their divisional title against the challenging Dodgers Carl Yastrzemski has grounded out and popped up [Applause] groundball do Beckert over to me and that's all for the American League in the fifth inning no runs no hits no errors one left we've gone five innings in Detroit in the stores the American League four and then as delayed three we've got some changes now for the American League Kaline goes to right field Mike Cuellar is the new pitcher Amos Otis is in centerfield replacing Bobby Murcer cookie Rojas has gotten a second base in place of Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew is at first base take norm cash out li-mei Cuellar walks LeMay in the sixth inning the batter now Joe Torre who's popped up and struck out [Applause] the Brooks Robinson [Applause] good quick pivot by cookie Rojas with LeMay bearing down on him at Brooke she really got rid of the ball again didn't he here's Brooks again get ready stance right at him knows he's got the time watch this quick move by Rojas LeMay he got down there pretty well Rojas is having a fantastic year for those Kansas City Royals Dajjal the strike one to him has been hit by a pitch ball and struck out play ours is one of a small group who's played for both leagues in the all-star game [Applause] now the National League sends Nate Colburn out on deck he swung at it Gregg to Hobart will bat for Marichal if they get the chance Stargell was really going to get out in front of that one really try and pull it and queer threw me extra slow one they had a shift on you'll know it against Stargell two strike pitch to him Pressey fishing by mike cuellar in the sixth inning and at the end of five and a half innings it's the American League for the National League three let's quickly go down to Lindsey Charlie Gehringer played in the first all-star game 19:33 doesn't seem that long to dota2 charlie no not really what do you remember most about that all-star game well the powerful lineup we had mostly because we had the terrific hitters in fact they were so good that the National League all-stars came out to watch us take batting practice at was the villians of Ruth and airs and people I've got in parks and and Greenberg and Gary so good to see you again thank you very much thank you Charlie Gehringer now let's go back upstairs and just as Gehringer was a longtime favorite here in Detroit the man moving into the batter's box has been in recent years Al Kaline who's never played a day of major a minor league baseball game right out of the high school playing fields of Baltimore to join the tiger and if any River said he's facing Ferguson Jenkins and Kaline on the first pitch as a base hit the Senate and of course the hometown Tiger fans love it Ferguson Jenkins comes in to face the American League in the sixth inning with a scores gentle American League for National League three hometown favorite Al Kaline leading off drive single the center [Applause] Don Kessinger is gone the shortstop Harmon Killebrew now we'll be hitting the northern kasia spot and then Brooks Robinson on deck [Applause] the killer two more homers and he'll 500 lifetime home breanne - you can't wander far off that bag against Johnny Benson so quick snap throw [Applause] Killebrew looking down at Billy Hunter the third-base coach looking to see if he's going to have K line moving [Applause] Killebrew really lifted that one hurt a low sinker ball on the 3-2 pitch let's see him go down after this fish see bench going down and inside ball down around the knees inside corner part of the lot I've seen in it Jenkins now has the job of pulling Harmon Killebrew he doesn't and there goes another one not even the wind can stop this one it's another two run homer and Killebrew has stretched the American League margin to 6 to 3 with the fifth home run of this game [Applause] Amos oldest congratulating him as was Kaline right behind him lost a six to three in favor of the American League they've had three homers the National League's a two ball one for that nine runs in the game they've all resulted from homers tonight that's the first homer hit the left field that was against the wind mine's got the center it's a bait that in front of Lily David Lee hits in the role for the American Way well three Anza batter [Music] seven hits now for the American League and three hits for the National League the two of their three hits have been home run a high fly ball the upper cut it too much Willie Davis backpedaling drifting with a win and puts it away back to first base goes Brooks Robinson one out [Applause] now it's half a ratio up Amos Otis will be hitting in the number 9 spot [Applause] well-hit the second cup DoublePlay combination goes to work Beckert the Kessinger to me and that's all for the American League in the six they had two runs three hits there were no errors nobody left at the end of sixth the American League six the National League three Don Kessinger we'll be heading down to number five spot he's a switch-hitter the Chicago Cubs he'll be followed by Johnny Bench and then Glenn Becker flyball right-field Al Kaline fellas played this right through here better than anyone in Tiger history he makes the play in the corner on the slice hit by a right-hander holding the batter to a single normally a double against most right fielders Johnny Bench crashed a home run in the upper deck in right-center and then hit a hot shot the third that was by Brooks Robinson and all those cardshark hands of his he sneaked it and fired over to first to get him he's trying to but now I'm Brooks down at third he couldn't get the ball by him in a World Series so he's gonna get it in front of him that's not too unusual for bench you expect him to hit for power but he's beaten out some bunts this year and last year to saw Brooke she plays a deep third-base tried to lay it down on it he got that one by just a second hit he's hit the ball hard every time up six to three American league-leading on our NBC scoreboard [Applause] Nate Kolbert has come out on deck for the nasca League Len Beckert the batter [Applause] it pops it up looks Robinson gives way to Aparicio the American League shortstop has it to down and here's power hitting Nate Kolbert batting now hitting 277 there's lowly a 14 game winner for the Tigers Hobart has 19 homers 51 runs batted in we have 38 homers last year sort of unrecognized around the country is one the best power hitters in the game [Applause] and culvert takes a strike that slow curve it again strike to do down for the night the league Johnny Bench it first there are some great pitching to slow ones and got the fastball by him he had Hobart completely off-balance at the plate no runs one hit no errors one left and now the seventh-inning stretch in Detroit with a store the American League 6-2 National League three [Applause] next Saturday Tony and I will be in Atlanta Georgia for NBC's major league game of the week Maury wills Richie Allen Willie Davis West Park for some of the stars with the Dodger and Hank Aaron Orlando Cepeda Ralph Garci leaks me on with the Braves the Dodgers in the Braves at 2 o'clock Eastern Daylight Time right here on NBC and every Saturday throughout the season we had three more Monday night games for you two followed by the playoffs in the American National League and all capped off in October by the World Series on NBC Amos Otis now batting in the number 95 it's a flyball to left Willie Stargell be camped under one down Don Wilson is the new pitcher for the National League Larry Dierker had been announced by manager Sparky Anderson to represent the Astros dierker's shoulder tightened up so Don Wilson replaced him now cookie Rojas is up for the first time [Applause] placing rod carew Rojas what a job he and Otis have done for the vastly improved Kansas City Royals this year Roelofs having his greatest season is batting 315 six homers 39 RBI hits a flyball shallow right Clemente coming on he makes basket catches like maze 2 down [Music] Don Buford there's now coming up [Applause] [Music] poor pitchers in Major League history have hit homeruns and games in which they pitched a no-hitter and two of them are here tonight you're looking at one right now Don Wilson Rick wives or the other an immaculate bouquet that's all for Buford he's tagged out by Johnny Bench the American League's down one two three and a seventh at the end of seven is still the American League 6 National League 3 mickey lowlich the Tiger World Series hero over the Cardinals in 68 enjoying his best year this year of 14 wins and 6 losses and earned run average at 2.96 and saw the nationally switches now to right-handed batter Bobby Bonds in place of Willie David talented young giant outfielder has 20 homers and hitting free throw was knocked in 57 run well many on deck at the top of the order and then LeMay bonds us great speed he strikes out a lot a 1 2 pitch to Bobby bar bourbon now the American League has gradually shifted its defensive lineup on the field they have Yastrzemski the top left fielder in the league defensively and left Amos Otis a good center fielder Kaline and right they have Robinson at third aparicio at Short Rojas at second Killebrew isn't the top defensive first baseman in the American League defensively George Scott is but he's not here tonight Killebrew is at first and Thurman Munson has gone behind the plate so with a three-run lead now they're gonna try and hold it with lowly and their best defensive players one out nobody on Clemente struck out his first time one ball no strikes at the knees one-on-one he won the three games for the Tigers when they beat the Cardinal then he beat Bob Gibson in that dramatic seventh game at st. Louis pitching on two days were asked to one one fit led up high ball two to him one [Applause] and then he looked like he turned to Frankie about the plate umpire to say let him get that one down in the strike zone it looked like he was fooling much on the change-up on deck as LeMay [Applause] lame high ball three honey why wasn't that in the strike zone I like to have that one one out nobody on lemon he had ten hips in a doubleheader last August against the Dodgers a lot of hits in one day rien one doing [Applause] it's a high-flying to deep-fried almost in the same spot a Johnny the upper deck in right center I never seen too many log drives in the opposite field by right-handed batters that we've had in this game that's another tremendous shot for a right-hander 450 460 here's that Clemente swing once again that bats stay back hawk now a trademark hitting off the front foot look at that right foot the rear foot a foot off the ground something that is not advisable as a hitter but don't tell that to Clemente or Hank Aaron [Applause] our stadium and the American League lead the sliced 264 [Music] [Applause] hey all going six home runs tonight ladies and gentlemen this all-star game ties an all-star game record three by each team then [Applause] and plenty for the National League do the Box lowly the first sit-down Monsanto now's coming out to bat for Joe Torre Santo the cup another strong right-handed batter and all three National League homers were hip to the opposite field in the upper deck with bench and Clemente hitting him in right-center well up at the upper deck like Robinson homered to right for the American League Perry and Wilbur wood warming up the sauna [Applause] Willie Stargell up next Sano does something a chopper to the box the league is retired in the 8th one run one hit Clemente's Homer no errors nobody left we're going to the last of the eighth inning with the American League leading six to four all right we've got some more changes now Petros has gone to right field with the National League yes Earl Weaver out checking their batting order Bobby Bonds goes to center field felix me on the second base and Ron Santo to third four more changes for the National League they've really shuffled their lineup tonight Carl Yastrzemski leading off for the American League in the last of the eighth he's gone hitless in three times facing Don Wilson working on his second inning he breezed through the center [Applause] ball for Yastrzemski died Al Kaline [Applause] yes sighing ovations in the hometown Hyderabad [Applause] blazing fastball by Wilson first strikeout for him Killebrew had a two-run homer to left in the sixth inning right now is the margin in this game [Applause] do one pitch down a third baseman sano for one over the first they've got the double play Santa the me on Jame and now we're going to the top of the ninth inning in the last chance for the nationally there were no runs no hits nobody left at the end of eight it's the American six the National League for [Applause] that ain't thinning and Lou Brock is going to bathroom Willie Stargell you'll be followed by Don Kessinger and then Johnny Bench mickey lowlich now we'll try and hold this American League lead they gave up a hit that was a home run to Clemente in the 8th vitae blue Jim Palmer Mike Cuellar and mickey lowlich the exact plans that Weaver announced before the game and he's followed them with his pitching foul back strike one Brock batting 347 he is third in the league in batting and of course an outstanding baserunner [Applause] all the players the managers and the coaches in this game there's a but fast man good play by Louis together the ball it's squarely on home plate that's why the big high bounce and lowitz in spite of what her leader said that he's a little too heavy made a pretty agile feeling play getting the fleet Lou Brock here it is again hitting the corner of the plate look at Lola's breaking quickly as we see Thurman Munson coming on good quick throw to Killebrew covering the bag to get Lou Brock Kessinger flied out in his one time all the players receive a blue Lindy synthetic sapphire star ring for appearing here in this all-star game white gold or brutal no balls one strike I think we owe the commissioners and thanks to for including us it's a beautiful ring thank you Dr presented by Commissioner Kuehne one out nobody on a two-run lead for the American League with a ninth-inning a fly ball into right field Kaline calling for it and our two down now one out away from snapping an eight-game moving through Alan Roth our old standbys when our statistician agenda nightmares stage manager returning to his native Detroit gem O'Gorman Tom Dawson director of TV and radio activities for the major leagues and Joe actor director of public relations Charlie Feeney president Ashton Lake and Joe Cronin president American League we thanks along with the mr.
