[Music] [Music] hey I'm Steve from this week with cars and this is my 1971 Jaguar xj6 barn fight so I'd like to get this thing cleaned up first so let's see if I can get it ready okay I'm not gonna call this clean but this is a whole lot better so now I'm gonna pull it inside and let's take the first look at it okay okay I've got the Jaguar back in the garage now so let's take a look at it let's get this hood open get the hood open all right inside first appearance is it looks like everything is pretty much intact looks like the brakes are intact I can't tell right now if there's any fluid in there probably not around to the other side air cleaner still on that's a very good thing the tube that goes up to the cold air trumpet is there everything looks really good it's really dirty gonna need a new battery this is probably one of the worst batteries I've ever seen so I'll start with that and then see if anything on the car works we'll take a look inside real quick windows down since there's no power I couldn't put the window back up you can see it's very dusty inside a little dirty but it actually doesn't look too bad in here all right continue on back back here in the trunk it's full of stuff so I haven't gotten through any of this yet don't know what's back here hopefully if I'm missing something and I'll find it back here so let's get that battery replaced before I permanently connect this side I want to tap the cable to the battery make sure it doesn't spark very much I just heard a little bit initially not much of a spark there at all so it's probably safe to connect this now that the battery is connected I'm tempted to jump inside and see what's works but I'm going to do a couple checks before I jump inside because I might be tempted to try to hit the starter motor and see what happens so first thing I need to check is check out this air cleaner make sure there isn't any Mouse houses in here we definitely don't want to suck a mouse house into the engine okay there's evidence that mice did get in here but they did not make it through the filter and into the engine so I'm gonna pull that filter off and then it'll be safe to crank the engine over the other thing I want to check of course is oil let's make sure there's oil in the engine I have no idea why this car was parked you can see plenty of oil in it I have no idea why this car was parked and if there's something major wrong with it that they put it away and didn't touch it for so long now that the battery is connected let's take a look inside here see if anything works put the car in park okay looks like this car is equipped with air conditioning looks like these might be air conditioning controls here otherwise the standard Jaguar dashboard certain the key to the first position mission light comes on card does crank over so that's a good sign so so this does crank over next thing I need to do is see if there's any ignition it's a real quick way to see if there's any ignition is to use one of these spark testers it just goes in line with spark plug wire connect it to the spark plug and you'll see a flash right inside there if there is a spark another thing you could do if you don't have one of these is hook up a timing light and watch for the timing light to flash okay there was no flashes so the ignition is not working either the coil doesn't have power or there's a problem and the distributor cap and I'm guessing that the problem is in the distributor cap okay let's see if we can get this distributor cap out of there we can look at it you see a lot of corrosion around the ends you can see a big big glob of corrosion right there looks like this car still has points on it so I'm sure the points are in need of cleaning let's get this rotor out of the way yeah you can see the points points are right there and I'm sure they need cleaned I don't have a new distributor cap on hand and getting one locally is going to be impossible so I'm going to take my dremel tool and clean this one up [Music] now what I need to do is take my points file and go in there and clean the points I also don't have another set of points so I'm not going to install some of them at this time I'm just gonna get these cleaned up see if I can get this to work if I have the points clean good enough you should see them spark when I turn the engine over I don't even need to go back and look at the video to see if it was sparking I could hear it from all the way in the driver seat okay I have the cap rotor and points cleaned let's see if there's spark now on the spark tester okay the car's got spark now the last thing we need is fuel all right I need a fuel source for this engine and when I turn the ignition on I never did hear a fuel pump run so well we've got going on here the fuel comes up here goes through this heater that heats up the fuel or cools it down depending on the season and then comes out here goes to the carburetor so I'm gonna disconnect this double-check that there is no fuel running from the fuel pump and then hook on my own fuel source here to go to the carburetors all right I'll turn the ignition on double-check and see if any fuel comes out the ignition is on right now there's no fuel coming out so safe to leave that open okay I've got fuel going to the carburetors there and now I can see if the engine will start to help the engine out on its first crank I'm just going to give it a little squirt the starter fluid in each carburetor [Music] all right when I got in I noticed that the throttle pedal was all the way to the ground so I think the throttle might be open right now and I'm gonna need to fix that before this has any chance of starting okay it looks like the throttle is the linkage over here is loose and the throttle linkages are not moving at all so I think that the carburetors are seized up it's gonna look in and see if I can see oh yeah the Pistons are completely gum shut so you didn't need to disassemble these carburetors before we go any further I'm gonna remove the robust of this air filter housing get that out of the way okay I'm gonna take the top of the carbs off and before I do that I'm going to label them rear and front that'll just be temporary that'll come off when I clean them but for now I don't want to lose track of which one these are because these are a machine specifically for each carburetor looks like these carburetors were sealed for warranty issues which probably means that these have never been taken apart before Hey I could see earlier that the pistons were stuck and those are definitely stuck in there I'm not sure that I'll be able to get those removed at all it's interesting that the diaphragms you're still in pretty good shape don't appear to be ripped they're not a hard these things just there's a little tab here on this side on these little people just got in there and gummed everything up but other than that so this thing would have been started every once in a while I think it's still be in good shape so I think maybe what I'm going to try to do is spray some penetrating oil and around sides of here and let it sit for a while see if that frees the piston up this one here actually feels like it's loosening up good looks like might be the rubber diaphragm that's actually holding it in at this point stuck to the sides just a little bit there there we go look at how black and gooey that is smells terribly of old gas diaphragm I'm this side seems to be really clear but the piston is really stuck in there I think that one's gonna have to sit awhile the throttle on these is also completely stuck I've got good access to this one here now so I'm gonna spray some penetrating oil on that okay the front carb has started to loosen up a little there we go yeah that looks pretty bad look at that needle I'm gonna get some penetrating oil back in there okay I'm ready to remove the carbs now so it's gonna be four bolts per carb and then I'll take them out with them connected together with the throttle linkage and the fuel input okay I have the carburetors out of the cars you can see these things are pretty gross so I'm going to take them apart one at a time and put them in the ultrasonic cleaner that way I don't get parts for this carburetor mixed up with parts for that carburetor and once it comes out of the ultrasonic you should look pretty clean certainly a lot better than they do now okay it's been a few hours let's open this up and take a look see how this came I can already see on the top look at all this gross stuff that came off of these carbs this was brand new fluid when I put all these parts in here so all this stuff came off of these carbs so hopefully they look pretty good very hot okay yeah it looks like everything got cleaned up really well none of those black deposits know if you can see that real well all that black is out of there now let's try the throttle throttle does work correctly now also doesn't feel like there's any play and the throttle shafts so I'm gonna get this out it's important to blow air through all these parts get all the water out of it and wipe them all down and then I'll put this car back together take it over here got all my rebuild parts and then I'm going to take the other Carver part and put it in ultrasonic cleaner okay I have the carbs cleaned up put back on I've got everything hooked back up I've got the fuel line carbs are full of fuel so let's crank this over see if this thing starts now the car hasn't started yet but you can see it's been puffing a little bit of mouse nest out of the exhaust pipe already so I imagine once this does start a lot of stuff is going to come flying out of the back there right now I don't have the chokes on so I think I'm going to connect those up and see if that makes a difference okay I didn't have the chokes adjusted so that I could pull them up all the way once I adjust the dose looks like a fired right up you can see the water pump is not running either it's a smog pump or the power steering pump so I'm gonna need to figure out what's going on there I think first I'm just gonna cut the belt to the smog pump alright the smog pump was freed up so it wasn't that I still have another issue it's preventing the water pump from turning you can see over there I've got the belt slipped off that goes to the power steering now and fan turns but it's got a clutch the water pump pulley does not turn so the antifreeze in here it's probably gummed up and frozen up the water pump so the water pump definitely has to come off and the radiator is Green junk all over it so that needed to come out anyway so next thing I'm going to do is pull the radiator out and get that water pump off the brake master cylinder you can see it is pretty gross but the fluid is turned into after all these years so I have to really I need to take this half and completely clean it take a look at the fuel system now in here you can see the dual fuel pumps each of them comes from a gas tank in each of the rear fenders so this car has Saddleback gas tanks and each of the pumps pumps to that tee right there then it comes along the side goes to a filter mounted next to the spare tire I know that the pumps don't run hopefully they're just gummed up and if I clean them out they will run looking inside of the filler caps doesn't look very good in there I'm gonna have to vacuum those out first so I don't get any more of that junk into the tanks look at this one this one's really bad these banjo fittings on these pumps are seven sixteenths inch Whitworth okay I have my pump out I've pulled the top of it off and right here you can see these are the points for the pump it's a little hard to see but those open and shut and that's what makes a pump run these are pretty corroded so I'm going to take my points file clean those up and then test the pump but I'm pretty sure that it's going to run after that okay I took the top contact out which was mounted right here to this as you can see I cleaned both sides of the contacts there and this one's gonna sit like that up here and click just gonna click click click and that runs the pump so it's not too bad to get to and clean okay I've got the points cleaned and I've got the electrical hooked back up to this pump I'm going to turn the ignition on and see if we can hear it pumping it's in an e-type Jaguar the fuse box is located behind this front panel there's these plastic covers right here that are hiding the fuses so take those off and okay there's a little chart down here that says what fuses do what but I might as well just check them all and replace any of them that aren't working I tested all the fuses and none of them are bad so I'm gonna take a look at the wiring a little closer alright I've checked the electrical and for some reason we're not getting power when the switch is set for this pump over here but there is power over here for this pump so I'm gonna take this pump off now and clean this one up and we'll see if we can get this one to run okay I think I have this left pump working I'll turn the ignition on see if it pumps [Music] you can hear it pumping right now so this pump is not working and I'm gonna see if I can get it to run off the peel tanks so I'd just like to show you what the card does run got the car in park right now turn the key to the ignition pull the choke out all the way let's start the car engine does sound pretty good and the car does Drive as well well I've done everything I can without eating new parts the car runs and drives believe it or not all that crud that was in the brake system was just on top of the little filter inside the reservoir the brakes actually do work and the car does Drive but I need some parts and it's gonna be a while it's like an can get them so the car needs a water pump needs a Brady aider fixed or replaced so right now I'm kind of stuck as far as I could go without getting any parts but I think this is a pretty good outcome do you want to see more videos like this click Subscribe or comment below
