to the ability to control the team and throw the ball well as the ability to take a bad play and make it into a good play which is what chadwick just did however he did lose his leg on that tackle by back howard pardon me chip howard from the famous howard family out of the lineup now chadwick back in from the 49th nine and a half minutes remaining in the ball game here's chadwick [Music] going into the game we were talking a great deal about the fine offense played by both teams but thus far it's been a bitter grueling defensive battle we've had four field goals kicked in the game but no touchdowns and they're hitting on every single snap of the ball first down tennessee at the 45 of auburn coming up to the nine-minute mark of the ball game joe thompson knighted to the far side on the slot truck number 88. nedlick the rudder ritter gained about four more yards because of a great block by watson let's see it this year the white men cannot block from the outside so watch how well he sets up here and lets the man come into him the outside men peeling back he just keeps his feet here moving to the outside marvelous blocking it's awfully hard to stay with a retreating man the line also went on the play for the auburn defense at the 35 well it's less than a yard for tennessee first down with third down coming up 9-3 the score there you see what they need a little less than the length of a football [Applause] and at quarterback is dennis chandler replacing chip howard who looked as though he got a muscle bruise on the leg after a good run the power i reported that howard is okay and first down by chadwick the junior tennessee has rushed the ball 50 times 216 rushing yards well there's one of the youngest tigers and not too happy he realizes already tennessee is perhaps in field goal range and one more first down they certainly will be and a nine-point lead looks an awful lot better than a six-point lead 754 left in the game from the 34 first down [Applause] montgomery alabama knocked out by dave becker [Music] and tennessee's drive which began at the 20 following a fumble recovery in the end zone has now gone to the 22 of auburn thompson to the left 88 trot in the slot gary fowler is the split tight end to the near side tyler blocking watson running back and simmons working on number 31. let's watch it again in slow motion with marvelous execution on the option play pitch comes back to watson and all he's got to do is run with the ball they wiped everybody out so well [Applause] this will be the 14th play in this sustained drive by tennessee slot formation for far side second down and two from the 14 of auburn marker down early movement in the tennessee backfield the pressure has really been on the auburn defense tennessee has run a total of 65 plays when you've given an all-out effort 65 times like that auburn defense it has it's beginning to wear a little bit last week auburn walloping chattanooga last week tennessee downing california of santa barbara and next week auburn will host kentucky while tennessee will go to gainesville to play the university of florida with the former coach here doug vicki of florida now that'll be uh another rivalry to be renewed but there's hardly any of spears is the one between auburn and tennessee now with the ball at the 19 it's going to be a second down and seven [Applause] great desire by the sophomore bill rudder from winchester tennessee and on the play number 69 tommy you're out and auburn fighting the clock fighting field position and a big third down third down and two now nine to three tennessee leading on three field goals 45 yards 30 and one of 49 by george hunt jet kicked a 28-yarder for auburn [Applause] recovers six minutes seven seconds left in the game and the tennessee drive to stop as bill lucka a memphis tennessee a sophomore recovered the loose ball and we've had back-to-back fumbles that have prevented scores there's just uh almost no question that hunt would have been able to hit the field goal from there to put his side nine points ahead but a few moments ago auburn fumbled the ball from the one-yard line into the tennessee end zone now auburn beasley at the bottom of your screen number 88 from the 13 first down and it goes to beasley quick hitting play he is down at about the 21 for eight yards david allen on the tackle they mark it at the 20 second down and three for auburn trailing by six points [Music] what a catch by smalls dick smalls a senior from birmingham let's watch the play again we have a penalty being discussed [Music] great catch this is smalls coming down the field you can see him make the inside break sullivan really laid it on the target that time let's see if we can see the holding penalty once again [Applause] there's beasley taking away beasley 16. 19 yards as meddleson walker zero in on it let's watch it again sullivan dropping straight back beasley driving down the field there's that timing he stops tennessee defense had to go back and now watch this boys moves that's alan that's bobby magers two great defensive players he shook them both off pounds misses the tackle and he's finally cut from behind by walker what an exciting football game on the 16 first down james owens is in the lineup one of the people at eddie jackie walker i mean both teams have been looking forward to this for one year we've got three minutes and 35 seconds remaining and the issue is not yet decided walker with 11 tackles today medals with 10. easily to the far side smiles is opposite second down at 10. sort of an understatement a wide world of sports today immediately following it'll be the world middleweight championship fight between monson and griffith i think we should point out that uh hunt the field goal kicker for tennessee can kick them from 45 yards out so all tennessee has got to do is pick up another 15 yards to put hunting range he's three for three today two for two last week second and six for the volunteers at their own 47. watson full back of motion two wrinkles [Applause] beautiful screen to rudder [Applause] well that takes courage on the part of her quarterback but the weight like he did chadwick did with the rush by several uh auburn lineman very unusual play uh he delayed it so well that i honestly thought he was being rushed back there and he sent the pullback in you don't want to let them hit the home run the long ball but you can't afford to let them hit for 12 yards either because if they hit for 12 yards they're in field goal range so you've got to keep it all covered because george hunt has kicked three 45 yards 30 yards [Music] third down a big one 59 seconds left in the game tennessee by 1. intended for the pullback kurt watson fourth down 54 seconds left on the clock and after one year of waiting auburn is one play away from winning [Music] bud what do you do here i think chris you go for a pass that will gain you about 12 to 14 yards you don't try to hit the long one because you know that there's no way that the defense is likely to give that to you there's got to be some softness somewhere in the middle so you go with some kind of a crossing pattern out pattern and hope to set up the field goal and they need a lot of yards here on fourth down they need about 17 let's see where they get it always on this hit a pass rush number 92 bob brown year out and bill luca putting the rush on the tennessee quarterback [Applause] wow so on downs auburn and you know the disappointment of defeat is a terrible thing but there's always next week there's always more games it's not the last game of the season these are both great football teams tennessee will be back 48 seconds left on the field clock here at hayland stadium and this will be the first loss that tennessee has sustained here in 24 games at home [Music] sullivan what a hero he's been here in the second half went off to a shaky start in the first half but he came through getting on eight of nine passes in an 87-yard march that saw unger score and jep kicking the lead point and that's the safe type of quarterback sneak instead of just dropping along the line of scrimmage just take it back two steps and then drop speaking of sullivan he was six of 22 passing he is now 14 of 31. the provincial scoreboard coming up followed by abc's wide world of sports live via salad from buenos world aires championship fight second of 14 coming up nine seconds to go and that's a very good strategy always to go ahead and take the delay of the game penalty that no you know you're milking every possible second and you snap it the next time and this game is over there's a delay penalty as we look at dennis chadwick a tennessee quarterback a junior from decatur georgia second down and 19. delayed penalty [Applause] [Music] coming from behind and what a southeastern conference football game we've seen a little of everything four field goals our clutch march number 44 johnny majors or rather bobby majors congratulating number seven pat sullivan who had a tremendous afternoon medals comes in and in the sway of sportsmanship and an intense rivalry and this is all part of college football college athletics competition [Music] well bud what about the defensive player of the game and the offensive star i think we'd all agree chris that pat sullivan and auburn is the offensive star of the game and defensively it was a very tough choice but jackie walker the great linebacker of tennessee and uh to auburn we'll go a one thousand dollar scholarship in this man's name pat sullivan number seven to be used in the scholarship fund and the same will happen here tennessee in the name of jackie walker so they have just looked forward to this battle for
