hi I'm Lou with another episode of my car story and today in the area of leaving a historical legacy I'm with Tom Griffin Tom good to see you good to see you Lou what did you bring today 1922 Model T Ford Roadster and this is you know 1909 was the beginning of Model T's and so how many do they build 15 millions and where does yours fall in that line right about in the center right 7 million some odd thousand all right and I I don't know how to drive a Model T but we're gonna learn together so I hope you enjoy this ride along with the video review so we'll put them together so Tom before I jump off into the car tell me first of all why this cart of all the cars in the world well this car kind of satisfies the intrigue of vintage automobiles and it was a car that needed to have restoration and it was within my capability to do so so it was a good choice and it was a choice that I'm grateful that I made and you've had this car for how long 30 years 30 years so it's a member of the family yes it might be considered that ok and with that being said step to the left if you would and we're gonna take a look at your car and let me do just that okay so with that being said one of the things right off the bat that I noticed is we have this Chicago Tax badge connected with the Illinois 1922 plates clearly we have our crank although Tom when was the first year that the cars had automatic ignition well excuse me automatic start just want to try this 1919 was the first year of electric start okay so 1919 was our first year and I'm just noticing in the radiator we have Ford and what is this here it's not just a hood ornament what do we have it's what they call a moto-meter and the motor Peter was a thermometer which would indicate the engine operator and temperature is expected to keep range of operation exceeded that then there was a sign that you have trouble a moto-meter some of the things I've noticed is this is obviously got some wings type look to it so you can grab that and turn it but I also notice that there's a gap there as this shifts and you're gonna see that when we when we start this one up now I'm noticing an H under the Ford is there any reason for the H or no well that was the style lens that they developed they had different lenses during the period of time and each lens kind of diffuse the light in the most favorable fashion okay cuz clearly there's some waves in there and this is that's the choke or the strangler the strangler yeah that was the choke so when you crank the crank we find the carburetor with by pulling the choke a few totally a few times strangling the carburetor got it okay and I just want to show the back of those lamps and let me take one more look at the front of the car overall step back well one other thing what is this time that's a speedometer take-off okay so is there a cable that usually goes from cable he comes up to the screen oh okay and that cables disconnected right now right but normally for their and this is what this mechanism is for right but I just want to show the simplicity of this steering you get the leaf spring here for the body and then very simple setup there 15 million and these cars only came in black the early ones came in different colors colored with paint that there was like crimson like a red a green and a blue and then they varnished over those colors and the problem they had was is that varnishes didn't dry sufficiently quick okay so Henry Ford had adapted what they call a Japan enamel which was flowed onto the body and it was fast drying okay come on back with me okay I want to just take that in for a moment it's a little bit of a cool day so we have our jackets on but we're regardless gonna take a ride in this one these rims are oak hickory smoke sorry Hickory and that's the correct there for the day that's what they're supposed to be Hickory I'm seeing a Firestone logo there we've got the word Firestone here and these rims bolt off here and that comes off and then we got the Ford made in the USA there there's only one door to this you could see that there is no door on that side so our door is here and we'll get to the interior in a second toolbox may I open this okay so we open up the toolbox and as we open up the toolbox there are some period-correct tools here good job Tom why don't we open the engine compartment just for a moment to show where those two or you just put that down so here's our show me how these latches just turn like so that makes sense doesn't it it's a sip superior let me show what that looks like for the front wheel click - it just does that then this is the exciting side of the engine yes we've got carburation here's our choke line and this choke line goes to the body correct all right then we've obviously got exhaust you got Ford right they're made in the USA now what's going on with the spark plugs here there's coils on the inside of the dashboard okay and there's a coil for each cylinder and the timer times the coil according to the crankshaft rotation and the spark occurs at the prescribed time now there's no pumps no pumps no oil pump no fuel pump the water pump let's show the other side to a freeway so how do they get fluid going through the body of the engine well we've got we've got we clearly have water the concept is of Ford called thermo siphon and it worked on the principle of hot water rises and cold water settles okay so as the water cools in the radiator it settles to the bottom and then returns to the engine through that outlet pipe on the bottom okay and one day the oil is lubricated by the splash of the magneto and that's support they call a splash system and then fuel is a gravity feed so this car simple to maintain simple maintain and share with me you took it on a little ride tell me about that ride well last year I went on the Natchez Trace is from Nashville Tennessee to Natchez Mississippi and it was a 432 Mile Road without a stop sign it's a national park and we toured that back and forth and it was 1100 mile tour we did it in ten days and no problem no problem no problem no problem it old Ford engineering got it so here it's kind of funny now you've got a step here but there's no door so this is just ornamentation its ornament it snow stuff yeah what do we have here that's a luggage rack luggage rack very functional functional so when you are on your trip this made sense exactly okay we went ten-day tour and it was a they call a point-to-point to her well you know where I'm going here go ahead let us have it that's great and tell me why the lamps here and we have lamps on the front back in the day in a lot of towns it was illegal to have headlights because it frightened the horses so to comply they put coach lights which were kerosene operated and when he went into the town you had to use your coach lights so that people could see you okay they were virtually useless for headlights but he couldn't shine the headlights in the city then later on as law has changed that wasn't necessary anymore and then Ford didn't use the coach lights any longer let's go over to the tools again before before okay so here's our tools so this this tool has the word for word on it right there what does this one do this is a multi-purpose tool you can use it to take these lugs off to change the tire you could tighten the head bolts here and then here you could remove the spark plug gotcha alright so there's three three pieces for that one show me can you show me another four - I see this says Ford on it you know is the players will get this okay look at this what is that for some Ford cars had a plug which had a square hole in him then you would stick that in there so he could loosen the plug show me this one alright this is pretty handy tool is a multi-purpose tool principally okay and inside there's a bearing and the bearing screwed in so this was used to do that okay and this was to fit the nut that was on their differential so you could check the oil okay and then this was just to fit to another there was a nut on the rear wheel that this would fit loosen that not because you are your own mechanic back then yeah yeah you were I mean you had trouble in the road you had to help yourself this is it yeah yeah there's no water all right we'll shut that this cool box the functional toolbox of course I want to get a shot of that back now there's actually a little on this one the roadster I love the roadster so nice there's a little trunk here yes little talk you could take your eggs to town yeah and show me the breasts this is the yeah that's grass fire tire pump is it heavy well you know hmm normal weight normally on not too too heavy it took it took quite a tire pressure on this car is like 60 65 pounds so you had a really pump to inflate the tire by hand yeah okay so you're gonna get exhausted pumping your tires got it and then we've got the spare tire here that's an accessory that car did not come with a spare so it's an accessory and we learned a long time ago that having a spare tire was on the road was pretty good because otherwise you had to change your tire on the road and we have a light there was that with the car stop okay so the stock light does it say something or is it's a four-door y'all okay all right and here's a thirty two plate and I'm seeing brass back here another another spring-loaded those are the shackles back there and then there's a rear axle very okay and is the braking here's our exhaust system is the breaking of right in this drum that's a service break okay just to hold the car from rolling so how does the car break there's a break inside the transmission okay so trans break right there's a gap inside the transmission and I'm saying that's our battery under there right okay all right I think I know our Ford may I may I suggest can we before we take a ride in it show me I'd like to see it's the engine going before we close it up is that possible or will it shake apart so does great know we can okay do you wish to start yeah let's start it right now close okay yeah all right and I can always hold the other half all right [Applause] chocolates okay so we've got a key ignition okay we got a key ignition and the Model T had two sources of power for ignition one was the battery and one was the Magneto okay and at a standstill the battery provided a higher voltage and a stronger spark so it was easier to start so we started on battery and then once the engines running we switch it over to Magneto the idea was is that a Ford didn't depend on any anything external that it would run on its own power got it so the Magneto as long as the engine was running would be supplying power okay and now we've got is that a break well there's three pedals go ahead okay the left pedal is what we call the clutch and what it does is it engages low gear me jump in for just a second I'm gonna sit where your step City go ahead tell me what we've got here we've got when you depress the pedal which is this one or the one on the left right is the clutch center and the center one is the reverse at it and the right one is the brake so none of these make the car go well yes the clutch the one on the left makes the car go okay so the clutch changes and places you're going good and this is a to see you said this is a - speed - speed so one clutch in we go you pull this lever and we get a second there's a multi-function right now it's in neutral okay when it's all the way back it's the emergency brake catalyst break and then all the way forward would engage it in high gear which is direct drive so first gear is kind of in the middle no it's a neutral in the middle neutrals in the middle how do we get it to first push all the way down on the pedal push down on the pedal of that automatically positive right you hold it in first gear with the pedal I think I got it and then so your your acceleration is here all right that's the throttle and what's the other one on the other one is spark okay so tell me why I need to know about spark here spark timing right and that controls the timing that the spark occurs during the engine rotation okay all right and when you start the car you want the spark so when you crank it or start it with the starter motor it doesn't pre ignite it doesn't pre ignite and cause it to backspin and you hear stories about people breaking their arm and they usually forget this is the problem that's the problem because it's advanced so is it advanced up or advanced down advanced up okay so we want to try to make it a habit to it the spark before I shut it down no up go up okay all right let's do this let's do this all right we're gonna have you jump in we're gonna have you jump in first I've got some of the camera stuff we'll just put that on there there for a moment that's great yeah I'm gonna jump in right behind you and we're cozy so it oldest the spark is to me just a second to close this door are we gonna do that stick this by my feet okay spark is spark is so it's up all right the clutch pedal is in the center so it's a neutral neutral all the way back is the service brake got it all right so now the engine is warm so she'll start now we can hear the coil buzz that's right here that's right one for each cylinder phrase I do hear that crank it this is a late spark this isn't it you push that forward you're taller since they're off the roller so so what's top speed on the Model T well generally 40 miles is top speed that settle it straight and level maybe with a film but typically 35 13:35 is second gear and we're rolling right now we're in top your top direct drive and you just did that by pushing in the clutch and the right foot again is the great translate I mean this is you know it's cold out but we're not yeah little engine yeah we're pretty cub cozy in here in the summertime that engine eat is a gift that keeps giving this car gets thumbs up everywhere everywhere you go because it's just an instant friend maker oh yeah yeah you get to an intersection brings out the best in people breathe out the best in people you know further photos Bewley Kammenos a lot of people almost invariably ask what how many miles per gallon is again and anywhere from 17 to 20 miles per gallon it's pretty good so we have a ten gallon tank we got a hundred and fifty hundred and seventy mile range making 200 that's pretty good this car has a well-tuned carburetor so if I had the same setting and it runs just perfect at all speeds it's running wonderfully that weirdo troll they're second speak for the car speeds nicest perfect this is 4 miles an hour 7 so now we have a trip and we have the total miles at total mile since 86 79 second came correct because they don't have it last year I put about 2,000 miles on this car we talked about the magistracy yeah and then other trips to take with the International Model T Ford Club this year we're going in western Pennsylvania and I have to say they're super comfy that is I mean it really is especially I had a new upholstery put in new Springs and affiliates drive it all day if you love it tired yeah no it's it's wonderfully cope comfy and cozy and fun even though it's a cold day I'm feeling very comfortable warming it's a wonderful wonderful thing but that being said with that would that be some more friends more waves if people like what they see on the channel subscribe to the channel hit the bell so you can see all the videos of all the cars Tom what a treat thank you for being on my car story it's soul for me historically wonderful to learn about the Model T one of America's finest you know carves period because it started all the rest of the cars I want to treat to be on within thanks for being such a great heritage but for this one well thanks for featuring my car appreciate it but I
